Some tips for henna / mehndi tattoo aftercare.

If you getting henna 1st time be careful, Henna is wet so you can stain your cloth or surrounding also it can ruin your design.

Let dry your henna tattoo for at least hour.

Best way to take off your henna is rub it off your dry henna. Don't wash it with water it affect your stain.

It is best to avoid water for the first day. If you need to wash the residue paste off your skin try using a bit of lemon juice or olive/ any oil.

Avoid excess rubbing of the area. Keep in mind that frequent washing with water/ soap also rubbing cloth on the design will cause your henna design to fade more quickly.

Remember once you have removed the dry henna paste you will see an orange-yellow stain left on your skin ( Don't freak out). The stain will deepen into a richer reddish brown tone over the next 48 hours. The final color will depend your skin and body chemistry with darker colors appearing on the hands and feet. You should try to avoid contact with water as much as possible during the first 24 hours after paste removal as water can interrupt the oxidization and darkening processes of your henna stain.

Natural Henna is prepared with an acid like lemon juice. In order to turn henna designs black is by treating them with ammonia. Ammonia was most easily found in the store or picking up a bottle of household strength ammonia.

“Please note, ammonia is potentially hazardous to ones skin, so read the following before you try to use ammonia on yourself or others! Personally I don’t use ammonia on my client. Most of the client is unaware of the side effect.”

Before you apply black henna, read the warning label on the back of the ammonia bottle! This only works well on palms and should only be tried by an adult with healthy unbroken skin. If the ammonia starts to burn or hurt, quit this immediately, and flush the skin with water and vinegar. Do not do this if you have sensitive skin, if you have broken skin, or if you are a child. Do a patch test on your skin with the ammonia before you do a large area! Use household ammonia, not laboratory ammonia. Do not use lemon ammonia, try to use the plainest household ammonia you can find. Household ammonia is 90% water. Don't get ammonia in your eyes, mouth, or on thin delicate skin. Ammonia is caustic, and can give you something like diaper rash or dishpan hands. It does not usually bother healthy adult palms and soles. It works much better on hands that have firm to hard skin than soft skinned hands. On very soft hands, this does not work properly, the skin must be firm and porous for this to work. Do this only in a well ventilated area.

“Do not apply on skin other than palms and soles! Ammonia/ Black henna on smooth skin hurts and will exfoliate your henna before it ever darkens! I can only advice you don’t use black henna, when natural henna is very dark and doesn’t have side effect and stay longer. There is no need to use Ammonia/ Black henna.”

Caution: Health Canada alerts Canadians not to use "black henna"

OTTAWA - Health Canada is advising Canadians that the use of the ingredient para-phenylenediamine (PPD) in "black henna" temporary tattoo ink and paste is unsafe. Allergic reactions to PPD include red skin rashes, contact dermatitis, itching, blisters, open sores, scarring and other potentially harmful effects. Allergic reactions to PPD may also lead to sensitivity to other products such as hair dye, sun block and some types of black clothing.

PPD is an acceptable ingredient in hair dyes that, when used correctly, do not come into contact with skin for prolonged periods of time. The use of PPD in cosmetics applied to the skin for prolonged periods of time poses a risk to the health and safety of the user. As such, "black henna" temporary tattoo ink and paste containing PPD is not considered safe.

Under Section 16 of the Food and Drugs Act, no person shall sell cosmetics that contain substances that may cause injury to the health of the user when the cosmetic is used according to the directions on the label or accompanying the cosmetic. Cosmetics containing PPD that are applied directly to the skin are not to be sold in Canada. This includes "black henna" temporary tattoos containing PPD, which are often sold and applied by artisans at markets, fairs and amusement parks.

Before receiving a temporary tattoo, ask the vendor to confirm that PPD is not being used in the ink or paste. Health Canada permits the use of natural henna and other safe dyes in cosmetics.

Here is some tips for getting henna tattoo/ design first time.

Before applying Henna make sure your hand/ area where you getting henna done is well washed and also avoid to use lotion or other oily substances. Scrub skin with soap and warm water to exfoliate then rub area with alcohol to remove any lotion or natural body oils. If the skin has any oil or lotions on it the henna won't soak evenly.

Henna tends to draw the heat away from the body, so in winter it is good to have some kind of heat source near by.

Body Temperature: Henna colour is depend on body temperature. Some people are naturally more warm blooded than others. The warmer the henna paste and skin is kept, the better the color will be. Henna has the tendency to draw heat out of the body. Doing henna on a hot day is not only a relaxing thing to do, but it also will help to keep you cool. On a cold day though, you may feel as if your skin has turned cold.

How Long Henna kept: The longer you leave on henna design, the darker the design will turn out. If you can, leave it on over night, it will be better colour. If you can not leave it on overnight, try to keep it on for at least 4, preferably 6, hours.

Skin Type: Someones henna turn out a nice deep red, and almost a black on other person. Its depend on softer or thicker your skin. The more thicker skin the henna will absorb into it. Likewise, that is the reason why henna turns out so light on areas of the body other than the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet.

Step 1

Measure out henna powder into mixing bowl . Use about 100g for chin length, or 200g for curly shoulder length. You can use freeze leftover paste for a few months, so don't worry if you make too much.

Step 2

Add tea while stirring. Make sure tea is cold. You want a consistency like pudding, where the paste holds on the spoon and drips. Add the liquid a small amount at a time so it doesn't get too runny. Make sure you smash all lumps that form. Click Here!

Add lemon juice keep stirring. The above lists are some of the best, although there are others that may help darken henna. At this step, your paste should be smooth and not too thick.

Step 4

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, foil, or a lid. Set it in a warm place, and wait. Henna needs from 6 to 24 hours to release its dye.

Step 5

Use or store the henna when it's ready. You can either store it in seal-able bags and freeze, or use it immediately. If the past seems too thick, thin it before using freezing.

Step 6

For hair conditioning with colouring, you can now add conditioner, such as an egg & yogurt while mixing it.

HOW TO MAKE HENNA PASTE TUBE/CONE

Take 6" inch square piece of plastic freezer bag

Grasp the upper right edge of the paper and fold left toward the center. The middle of the wide edge will become the point of the cone

Wrap on the rest of the piece around the cone so as to make a firm cone. When you come to the last bit, shift and pull the cone until the opening at the tip is the size you like. This can be adjusted if the opening is as small as a pin whole. Tape around at the end of the piece.

Fill in henna paste with a small spoon in the cone. Two table spoons henna will fit in the cone. Now squeeze the cone from above with your thumb and first two fingers till the henna paste goes down the closedtip of the cone. Now hold the open end of the cone above and fold it. Now roll it until you feel cone is packed with henna. Now tape this end horizontally twice. Your Henna Cone is now ready to use...

Easy way to make Henna Paste:

Ingredients:

5 teaspoons sifted henna powder
1/2 cup dark coffee/tea (without sugar & milk)
4-5 drops eucalyptus oil
4-5 drops fresh lemon juice

Recipe:

Pour Sifted henna powder into a glass/plastic bowl. Make dark coffee/tea without sugar, add slowly on henna powder and keep stirring. Add eucalyptus oil and fresh lemon juice. Henna's Secret History: The History Mystery and Folklore of Henna

Henna is from the flowering plant Lawsonia inermis. Henna is known as many names and is mainly found in North Africa, Egypt, India, Pakistan and Middle East.

Dried ground, sifted henna leaves are easily worked into a paste that can be used to make intricate body art. The henna mix must rest for 6 to 12 hours so the leaf able to dark stain the skin. Though henna's colour will stain the skin with in minutes, the longer the paste is left on the skin more colour will migrate. Henna paste will yield as much dye as the skin can easily absorb in less than eight hours. Henna tends to crack and fall off the skin during these hours, so it is often sealed down by dabbing a sugar/lemon mix over the dried paste, or simply adding some form of sugar to the paste. This also adds to the colour of the end result, increasing the intensity of the shade.
When the paste has fallen off the skin or been removed by scarping, the stain will be orange, but should darken over the following three days to a reddish brown. Soles and palms have the thickest layer of skin and so they absorb the most colour, so they are the darkest and most long-lasting stains. Steaming or warming the henna pattern will darken the stain, either during the time the paste is still on the skin or after the paste has been removed.
Water and soaps may spoil the darkening process. After the stain reaches its peak colour it will appear to fade. The henna stain is not actually fading, the skin is exfoliating the lower, less stained cells, rise to the surface, until all stained cells are shed.

Henna has been used to adore young women's bodies as part of social and holiday celebrations since the late Bronze Age in the eastern Mediterranean. The early connection between young women and henna seems to be the origin of the Night of the Henna (Girls bachelor party), which is now celebrated world-wide.
The Night of the Henna was celebrated by most groups in the areas where henna grew naturally: Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Christians and Zoroastrians, among others all celebrated marriages by adorning the bride, and often the groom with henna. The use of henna by the Prophet Mohammed insured its place in history and its popularity and acceptance among the Muslim people.
