I guess I could start futzing with filters or
experimenting with the aperture and shutter speeds, but some days I just
want the photo to turn out, darn it.

We have come to the end of our time together, and I find that instead of changing my concept of what art is, it has more likely evolved slightly. I still feel that art is a visual communication medium for conveying emotion, meaning and information. The weight it carries depends on how the artist chose to tap into the consciousness of the audience.

In our earliest attempts at art, the artists may have been trying to convey the excitement and the necessity of the hunt. The animals were portrayed as vital and living, and an important part of the daily life of the artist and their kin. These animals were a source of food and tools that they relied on to survive in their hostile world.

As small communities formed and became interconnected by sharing a common societal bond, the ability to invoke emotions based on common reactions to symbolism, patterns and images allowed artists to share their ideas and feelings with more people. Matters of spirit became a group exercise, and the sharing of the Logos between large groups became important.

These communities grew into kingdoms and empires, requiring an adjustment and a generalization of art, but it was still intended to contain a message, even if the message became, “this is so and so, count of such and such.” The greater the audience, the more diluted the message and impact had to become.

I think that with a global audience, there are two routes someone can go with their art: a broad general message that offends no one, says a little and does not invoke visceral responses, or a very targeted and visceral message, with the risk of offending or turning off the people outside of the intended audience. It has become the dilemma between art and design.
