A chance for me to spill my thoughts and opinions. After-all, isn't that what a blog is for? :)

Her Best Hair started a few years ago with the purpose of sharing my lessons learned to just a small group of people. Originally, I did not plan for the blog to go public, never thought I would have more than 100 readers, and really did not think I would be blogging for this long. At times, I feel bad that I do not have a ton of random hair topics to blog about or a million products to review. However, this is me - this is my hair. Why put up information and products that I will never use or do not believe in?

As for my hair, I have been natural for years (never had a relaxer) and there are so many things that I just smile at because they are not new to me but others are super excited about them. Example, the Denman brush - the paddle brush by Annie is the exact same thing and it was first used on my hair back in the late 80s O_o. Shocking right? Co-washing - I did it, just did not have a name for it. Straightening, yes it can be done without heat damage.

Want to know something else? There are not any rules for natural hair! Stop letting other people tell you what you can and can not do to your hair. I have used everything from a fine tooth comb to Blue Magic hair grease on my head. It is all about how you use it with any product or tool. Guess who knows your hair best? YOU! Yep, you know it best - that is, if you have taken the time to learn it.

It may seem weird for the chick with the hair blog and YT channel to say this but...IT'S JUST HAIR! I now get what India Arie was saying when she sang "I am not my hair." My hair changes daily unlike my consistent personality. My hair can be used to express how I am feeling that day but it does not define me as a person. It is just hair - it comes after God, my marriage, and my family. It's just hair - if I lose it all tomorrow I am still the same ol me.

This has been a fun journey and I have met a lot of new friends since discovering the natural hair Internet community. I thank every single one of you for your support, positive words, and encouragement. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You Asked:

I came upon your blog this morning. It's an answer to my prayers.
Please,
could you tell me the name of the you tube vlogger from whom you learn
about the Aloe Gro treatment? When I clicked on the link in your blog I
see it was removed and I don't just want to go to anyone you tube. If
you have the directions already written could you please email them to
me.
In addition to growth, my hair is "see-through" thin - needs
to thicken up and get stronger. I hope I started at the beginning of
your blog (Nov 2009) so I could learn as you posted.
Many blessings and many thanks.

I Answered:

Thank you! You are so kind. It makes me happy that my lessons learned can help others. As for the Aloe Gro mix. The original ingredients are:

Organic
aloe vera gel (1.5 cups) , water (1 cup), sage essential oil (6 drops),
peppermint essential oil (10 drops), eucalyptus essential oil (5 drops)

OR

I did not have all the ingredients so I switched it up a little and used:1.5 Cup Organic Aloe Vera Gel,

1 Cup (distilled) water, 6 Drops Rosemary EO (Pregnant women should not use this EO),

10 Drops Peppermint E, and 5 Drops Tea Tree Oil

Mix all the ingredients, shake well, and spray as needed. For safe storage you can keep this mixture in the refrigerator. The essential oils act as preservatives so you can also keep it at room temperature in cool dark space.
The husband and I have been busy moving out of one house and into another. Who knew that you could accumulate so much stuff in such a tiny space. We moved into a much larger place and I am already scared about the amount of junk we are going to end up cramming in that house. I really need to stick to Spring and Fall cleaning in this place. Once we are a little more settled and I can actually find something I am planning to get up some more posts and create some new tutorials for this summer. I'll be back....
I have a bad habit of not snapping pics or documenting how I set my hair to achieve that style. So my new goal is to take a picture of my hair while it is set in preparation for a style. To get this Sunday's look I set my hair in 7 cornrows on dry hair. I applied just a quarter sized amount of Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner to each section before braiding. This particular style set for 2 days before I took the braids out (I had a busy weekend, it worked for me).

Also...I make another dress. Sewing is addictive. I love new clothes and when I can make unique pieces for less than $10, that is even better! I made the dress maybe 2 weeks ago (sewing is now my stress reliever)but I am just now getting a chance to wear it. After I made it, I loved the way it fit so I made another :) The pattern only has two pieces - super easy. See the pattern used here → McCalls M6559
Sunday's Message
The Anatomy of Worship: The Invocation
2 Chronicles 20:5-9
invocation: 1. The action of invoking something or someone for assistance or as an authority. 2. The summoning of a deity or the supernatural.
When you invoke God's presence He administers convictions and assumes control. As a result, you can rest in God's presence (See 2King 13, Psalm 16:11, Psalm 51, Psalm 46, and Psalm 10)

That is what I can use right now...rest.
Please visit www.tiashauntee.com

A few weeks ago when I vacationed in Florida, my hair was not happy. My plan to attempt to get my hair back to normal was to deep condition using the Greenhouse Effect method. I am happy to say that it worked! Below are the steps that I followed.

First, I shampooed my hair focusing on my scalp. I only shampooed once because I did not want to dry out my hair even more.

Second, I separated my hair into 4 sections and applied a generous amount of Aussie 3 Minute miracle Deeeeep Conditioner to my hair.

Then, after applying the conditioner to my hair in sections I applied Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) to each section on top of the conditioner and worked it down the length of my hair.

At this point I really wanted to sit under my hair steamer but I was so tired I decided to skip this step and go straight to the baggy.

I put on my baggy (hair in 4 huge twists) and then my satin bonnet on over that - I slept that way.

The next morning I readjusted my plastic cap and bonnet and wore a knit hat over that for the day. Using a black bonnet under a knit hat is a great way to hide the mess going on under the hat.

Finally, that evening (many hours later) I rinsed out the conditioner and damp bunned my hair. After about two days I took the bun down and my hair felt awesome to the touch.

Success!!! :)
Please visit www.tiashauntee.com

Always
self expressive with vibrant colors, amazing hair, or through her art.
She isn't afraid to be herself, speak her mind, and take the time to
share her voice with the world. I became a fan when she was Amanda Diva.
She has dropped the diva and just goes by her birth name now. I've
tried to meet her on several occasions all a fail. She inspires me to
want to be more creative. I'd love to have a interview with her over a
dinner. Anyway this song goes out to all the brothers who are going
through a season. And this is a Thank you to all the women out here
supporting them emotionally. Remind them "This too shall pass."

I made another one :) I have been drooling over the hi lo skirt style for a while now. I wanted a unique one that was not going to break the bank. I decided to try it and it was a success. I love this skirt and the crazy pattern of colors. The total cost to make this: $16

As for my hair, I had an event to attend on Saturday morning so my hair is actually a second day twist out. I did for flat twists in the back and three on each side. I did smaller flat twist because I wanted big hair with definition. If that is your goal then my recommendation is small twists/braids in sections. Be sure that you part your hair in the way that you want it to fall. Hiding parts can be tricky and mess up a cute style if you are not careful.

Chocolate is a classic gift shared by those in love. Everyone loves
chocolate. Maybe not everyone but there is a lot you can do with it. You
choose how you serve or what you serve this simple mousse on. Just
remember you ca n not go wrong with anything this spreadable, lickable,
and sweet. #EnjoyTheNow -James P.

3 cups mini marshmallows
1/2 stick unsalted butter, softened
1 tsp cayenne pepper
9 ounces best quality semisweet chocolate, chopped into small pieces. Chocolate chips work too
1/4 cup hot water from a recently boiled kettle
1 cup heavy cream
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Put the marshmallows, butter, chocolate, cayenne pepper, and water
in a heavy-based saucepan. Put the saucepan on the stove, over heat,
keeping the heat low, to melt, stirring every now and again. Remove from
the heat many times during the melting process to keep it from
burning. Meanwhile, whip the cream in a cold stainless steel bowl with
the vanilla until thick. If you do not have a stainless steel bowl place a
good mixing bowl over a full bowl of ice and place the mixing bowl on
top of the ice. Then whip the cream and vanilla until it is thick with
peaks, then fold into the cooling chocolate mixture until you have a
smooth spreadable mousse. Pour into small bowls or scrape with your
finger or spread it on what you want to eat. :)

Apple Cider Vinegar: Smooths hair shafts over time, preventing split ends.
Avocado: Helps hydrate hair, natural oils repairs split ends.
Banana: Rich in potassium, natural oils, vitamins that softens hair.
Coconut oil: Essential proteins to rebuild damage hair.
Eggs: Protein rich, makes hair more manageable.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Controls frizzy hair, full of good fats.
Honey: Natural humectant, provides impeccable shine.
Mayonnaise: Another form of eggs, providing shiny, soft hair.
Molasses: Full of proteins, minerals helps to relieve hair of stress.
Plain Yogurt: Great protein supplier leaves hair shiny, soft.

I have actually tried the recipe below. I left my curls stretched but thankfully the curls bounced back after a few washes. If time permitted I would do this deep condition again before straightening my hair.

Natural Deep Conditioner:

1 Avocado
1/2 Can of Coconut Milk
2-3 tablespoon each of Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and Honey

Then when vacation was over, I was more exhausted than I was before I went. I get back to work (after my coworker quit) and I am swamped. Working 9hrs days, commuting 1 hr, and trying to maintain my sanity is a lot of work. I just want a day to sleep. I think I remember what sleep feels like. I think.

In hair news...my vacation hair did not go as care-free as planned. I thought the Florida humidity would be great for my hair. Instead it was the complete opposite. My hair would not dry when it was wet and when it did dry it was extremely brittle (even with conditioner). I have washed and conditioned my hair twice since I have been back and it still feels horrible. At this very moment I am sitting here with a hat on (with a shower cap underneath) trying to restore some moisture with the greenhouse effect.

I did manage to have one good hair day while in FL:

Well, there is a follow-up post that was done by Trip Lee's wife, Jessica. This post is from her perspective and it is a good read! Check it out.
"As a married woman I have learned so much about what it
means to be a godly women and I don’t feel chained down by my husband or
my marriage. God’s design for marriage is for our good and His glory.
Knowing and believing that gave me the confidence to marry at the age of
22. Two and half years later, I don’t have any regrets, and I can only
pray that the Lord continues to bless our marriage."

I've been so busy with life that I have not had time to put them up much less put up posts on the schedule that I prefer. Unfortunately, I do not have any hair shots today, instead I took pics of my skirt. Why? Because my mother has been teaching me to sew and this is the first thing that I was satisfied with enough to wear outside of the house.

I absolutely love Maxi skirts so I will make a few more of these. The best part, it only cost me $7.00 to make. It only took 1¼ yards of material to make this skirt (that was based on my height and waist size).

I used the tutorial on Mimi g and sewing machine training tips from my mom to create the skirt. It was very comfy and perfect for a 80° day in North Carolina. I think I will use wider elastic with the next one so that it better without a belt.
Matt 28:19-20
People need to understand that the building is NOT the church. The building just serves as a meeting place. If you come inside and there is no God in you, then it is just an ordinary building. Part of the reason why the world is the way that it is, is because the church is still in the building. We tend to leave our teachings and knowledge behind in the building when we (Christians) step out into the world. When you leave the building you should take the "church" with you.
Things to expect before leaving the building:
• Expect opportunities - chances to tell about the love of Christ and spread the Gospel
• Expect opposition - everyone is not going to celebrate you, as soon as you leave the building people will oppose you; folk will feel that what you do in the building is fine as long as you leave it there
• Expect observation - folks will observe you to see if your walk matches your talk
What will happen when the church leaves the building?
• The world will be captivated by our vision
• The world will be conscious of our virtues, they will sense that something is qualitatively different about the "church" that left the building
Please visit www.tiashauntee.com

Not to long ago the DIY Hair Care Blog did a post on 5 Easy Steps to Start Seeing Hair Growth, the steps listed are ones that I have been living by for quite a while.

I often talk to ppl (both male and female) that state that their hair is not growing. If that person has color I point out to them that their "color is growing out." Of course, that is followed by a look of confusion. I am not one to push grwoth aids and miracle potions - I don't believe in them. Keep in mind...I have been natural all my life there probably is not a product out there that I have not tried.

Over time I discovered that the secret to hair growth is RETENTION. Your hair is growing, but what are you doing to make sure that it stays?

Share, what is your secret to retaining length and how has it worked for you?

I find the question how long have you been "natural" a silly one.
Before I grew my locs like most black children I had a Afro and braids
as a baby. As a preteen I had a horrible haircut with a widows peak. In
high school I had waves that flowed to the side like a jazz musician in
the 20's or 30's. Now that hairstyle made me stand out because most
brothers had the 360 waves and all the girls loved them lol.

In my late teens and early 20's I decided I wanted to grow my hair
out. As a child I always could picture what the 30+ year old me looked
like and that was with locs. As I grew older I was fascinated and
inspired by the free thinking men before me like Frederick Douglass,
Cornel West, Wadsworth Jarrell, Jean Michel Basqiat, Jeff Johnson,
Warren Brown and many others who chose to wear their hair as they did.
But now at that stage in my life I wanted to express my NEW found
freedom. I too, was a free thinking man. When I told my girlfriend at
the time I was going to get braids she laughed at me as if what I said
was a joke Kevin Hart told during his comedy special. I knew then I had
to have the courage to endure not only the ridicule from family and
friends but also be able to maintain this choice.

I do not know if during that time having braids, afro, locs, or twist
meant you were not going to be successful or you were trying to be a
thug. At least this was all I heard while living in the south. After
listening to the advice of many adults who blamed my then misfortunes in
life on my hairstyle I fell victim to the pressure and cut my hair.
Even though it made my immediate circle happy my circumstances didn't
change for the better. Most of all I wasn't happy. I moved to the city
and instantly felt alive. After a few months of being away from home I
started to have my hair twisted.

Never committing to locs but toying with the idea. At this time most
of my friends were graduating from college and looking for jobs. I on
the other hand was cooking with Wolfgang Puck Catering on the US Open
tour in Maryland. Two of my closest friends at the time were by the book
scholars. The type of students companies dream about having and parents
love to brag about. And on paper they were wanted by companies but when
they met them they were turned away. After being rejected countless
times they each told me they had to cut their locs to secure jobs in
their new fields of employment. Neither of them sounded happy about it.
Right then I decided to loc my hair for good. It was my own way of
honoring them and others who had to hide apart of them to get by.

My locs have become an expression of my liberation. Maybe even sort
of a rebellion against the way almost everything in society makes us
feel bad about ourselves. A way of saying "this is me, completely
natural, and a success in my own right." I had the pleasure of meeting
Warren Brown and visiting his bakery CakeLove. If you have not heard his
story Google him. His success as a business owner was inspiring. I met Jeff Johnson at one of his rallies and his spirit in infectious. These
two brothers were the confirmation for the young me that you can not allow
others to define you. Your hair does not define you. It reminded me to
seek not the validation of man but from God. Because he is the one that
gives you those talents. And they were examples of people not letting
their talents go to waste because of what others thought about the way
they wear their crowns. That has now been years ago and the landscape of
corporate America is changing. These friends have reclaimed their
choice to wear their hair as they choose. And I am still proudly wearing
my locs.

What does your crown say about you?
But wait...what about your hair?

This is the time I have been looking forward to - VACATION SEASON. I like to vacation in the summer because I want to save money and still travel to warm places. So for me this is vacation season :) Traveling to warmer climates when it's cold at home is just not as fun to me.

My first vacation is coming up at the end of the month and guess what I am stressing over? Yep, my hair. Do I want to wear it out and worry about maintenance, do I want to wear twists, what about updos, maybe braids? I am clueless.

I have devised a plan of attack.. I do not want to fuss with my hair a lot while on vacation but I want my pictures/memories to be cute :)

So here is the plan...

I learned from my 30 styles in 30 days challenge that I can get a few different looks out of one style. So the first thing I will do is set my hair the night before I travel. I can wear a hat while traveling (and won't have to worry about the TSA trying to check my 'fro).

Hair coverings are a saving grace for bad hair days so I will pack hats, scarves, clips..etc. How great is it that turbans are a trend?! They can be used to cover up just about any bad hair day.

I will recycle some styles from my 30 styles in 30 days challenge and create some updos near the end of my vacation when my hair is on it's last leg.

My hope is that this plan will work as well as it sounds.

My back up plan consists of some cornrows and a some braiding hair :)
Please visit www.tiashauntee.com

You Asked:
Hey,
I have been following your blog for some weeks now, and I am
very inspired. I think I have finally gotten the hang of my hair and
what to do with it, still searching for the right products, but the
point of this email is advice on my 21 month old daughters hair. She has
about 3-4 inches at the top. about 2 inches on the sides, and 1 inch in
the back. Her hair is very dry but its a good grade of natural hair.
Curly but I don't know what to do to keep it moisturized. I try oiling
it and wrapping it up at night but as babies do, she comes out of it
during the night. Any advice on getting and keeping my child's hair
healthy?

I Answered:
Babies can be tricky because they could care less about their own hair at that age. They don't do anything to help you care for it, lol, if anything - they fight all of your hard work. I do not have any kids of my own so I always refer people over to Nikki at Beads, Braids, and Beyond - she has some great advice. Start at the very beginning of her blog and you learn a lot as you follow her journey regarding her daughter's hair. I have even used a few of her tips on my own hair with great success.

As for my tips, when I would keep my godsons (before hair cuts) I would rinse their hair at night - because we always played outside - with a conditioner. I did not use shampoo unless it was REALLY dirty. The next day I would mist their hair with a water-based spray and apply either jojoba oil or shea butter and pull into a snug but not tight ponytail. It worked great for the time that I kept them.
Please visit www.tiashauntee.com

I think the best way to test your talent as a cook is on a person who
is sick. Their taste buds are low. They need the food for strength but
if they are asking for seconds you know your recipe is a winner. I have
been fighting off a cold for the last week and like most of you I can't
afford to take off from work. I have decided to listen to my gut and
make a classic with a twist. I have made Chicken Noodle soup with Sweet
Potato and Kale. It's a quick meal that is going to get me through the
weekend and back to enjoying the now. Have some. -James P.

Ingredients
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 fully cooked roasted chicken (grocery stores sell them)
1 Tbsp Cayenne pepper (Fights inflammation and thins mucous clogging that stuffy nose)
2 medium onions, chopped
4 large garlic cloves, chopped
2 pounds sweet potatoes or yams here in the south (about 2 large),
peeled, quartered lengthwise, cut into chunky slices (Produces vitamin A
to build the immune system to fight off colds and flu)
1 pound white-skinned potatoes, peeled, halved lengthwise, cut crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick slices
1 box low-sodium chicken broth
1 fresh bunch of Kale. Remove the rib and stems. And chop into strips. (
Kale is a effective antioxidant, boosts immunity, and with the addition
of high doses of well-known antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin A)
1 9-ounce bag fresh spinach
1 box egg noodles (you can use brown rice. Just follow the instructions given)

Directions
Take fully cooked chicken and chop the wings and legs off. Save these
pieces for another meal. Now you should have just the breast and
backbone. With your clean hands gently pull the breast meat off the
chicken and place in a bowl. After you have done this discard the
carcus.(Wash your hands again).

Heat a heavy pot with water on high heat. Add a little salt and 1
tablespoon of oil to the water. Wait until the water is at a rolling
boil. This is not when the water is just making bubbles either. A rolling
boil is when the water is especially vigorous when boiling while
producing bubbles. Now add your noodles. Cook until done. Now drain the
cooked noodles in a strainer over the sink. Run cold water over your
noodles to stop the cooking process.

Heat 2 tablespoons oil in heavy large pot over medium-high heat. Add
onions and garlic to pot and cook until translucent, stirring often,
about 5 minutes. Add all potatoes and cook until beginning to soften,
stirring often, about 12 minutes. Add broth; bring to boil, scraping up
browned bits. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until
potatoes are soft, stirring occasionally, about 20 minutes. Using a fork
or potato masher, mash some of potatoes in pot. Add cayenne pepper now.
Add the hand torn chicken breast to soup. Add your cooked noodles. Add a
little water if you think your soup is to thick. Stir in spinach, kale
and simmer just until wilted, about 5 minutes. Stir and taste. Season
with salt and pepper. Divide among bowls and serve.
Please visit www.tiashauntee.com

There is a reason for that...I have not been doing anything with my hair. Seriously. It's kinda of sad actually. I should do a lot better.

Every week and I am shampooing, conditioning, and bunning. Since my hair has been this length it takes a lot more time and energy to style. My arms get sore, I get sleepy, and I know that my hair will pay the price if I style when I don't want to because I will rush through the styling process. That is never good for your hair. To prevent that from happening I am just keeping it simple. That actually seems to work best for me.

I really want to try a flexi-rod set but I look at all the work involved and I am not in a rush to do it. This weekend would be a great time to try it but I will probably end up trying to get some sleep.

One of my favorite looks for this summer was worn last fall by Elle Varner in her "Only Wanna Give it to You" music video.

I love the hair and I love the outfit. It just goes perfectly together. I am determined to recreate this look :) Recently, while searching for some wash and go suggestions, I came across this video on YouTube. I love the outcome and maybe one day I will be brave enough to attempt this on my hair.

I read, via twitter, that Elle Varner is working on a music video for "Refill." I can't wait to see what look she gives us this time.
That statement is then followed by "What do you eat?" The honest to goodness answer is that I eat everything! I love food and I love healthy foods more than fast foods. I believe that "junk in = junk out." CBS recently posted an article about the types of foods that contribute to healthy hair growth.

Salmon - Loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, this high-quality protein source is also filled with vitamin B-12 and iron

Dark Green Vegetables - excellent source of vitamins A and C, which the body needs to produce sebum; Sebum is an oily substance that's secreted by hair follicles, sort of like the body's natural hair conditioner

Beans - provide plentiful protein to promote hair growth, but ample iron, zinc, and biotin

Nuts - terrific source of zinc; a zinc deficiency can lead to hair shedding

Poultry - Chickens and turkeys contain high-quality proteins; protein deficiencies can cause weak brittle hair and extreme deficiency can lead to a loss of hair color

Eggs, Whole grains, oysters, low fat diary products, and carrots are also on the list.
