Okay, so everyone knows you need to cut calories and increase exercise in order to lose weight, right? Well, what I am about to show you may completely change your mind about that.

First, let me give you a little of my background. If you've been reading any of my health blogs or articles... you may know that I'm a former health educator and healthcare writer, and my wife is a recreation therapist. Even with of our knowledge of health, nutrition, fitness and physiology we were constantly dieting, and always overweight.

Between my wife and I, we were 150 lbs overweight. And our weight problems were really beginning to take a toll on our health, and on every aspect of our lives. So we decided to put our heads together and find a way to safely but quickly lose those extra pounds. I won't kid you, it took months of trial and error, trying to find a different approach to the problem-- other than starting yet another diet-- but we finally figured out how to safely and reliable lose weight fast, and keep it off. And the amazing thing is, we really didn't need to diet!

The "Real Reason" You Are Overweight

What my wife and I learned, and what many health professionals today are discovering, is losing weight may have less to do with diet and exercise, and far more to do with toxic mucus, lining the walls of your intestines, and a host of common intestinal parasites living and breeding in your stomach and digestive tract!

I know that's a very strong statement, but keep reading and I'll explain. Heavy mucus that builds-up in the intestines known as plaque, along with intestinal parasites, can interfere with your body's absorption of nutrients. This causes your metabolism to slow down and actually store fat reserves. Also, intestinal parasites trigger hunger and food cravings, as well as many other digestive and weight loss difficulties.

What's more, one way the liver deals with toxins entering your body is to increase body fat to engulf these impurities and help protect your vital organs. The liver pushes as many toxins as possible into your fat cells where they can do the least harm. These toxins then saturate and surround the fat inside your fat cells and form a hard, plaque-like coating, essentially, trapping the fat within your fat cells.

But How Does One Get This Mucus or These Parasites In The First Place?

Toxins from the food you eat pass through your intestines and include pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, synthetic fillers, preservatives, and chemically-enhanced materials that are in your food due to the way foods have been grown, processed, preserved and packaged in this country for the last 40 - 50 years.

Your intestinal lining is exposed to millions of toxins every day from food, water, milk, soft drinks, coffee, alcohol, prescription drugs, heavy metals, etc. These toxins, as well as parasites, enter your stomach and eventually make their way into your intestines. 3. This thick mucus ALSO prevents much of the nutrients from the food we eat from being properly absorbed into our bloodstreams through our intestinal walls.

4. Thus, no matter how much you eat, or overeat, you are unable to absorb a sufficient amount of nutrients from your food. After a period of time, this makes your body think that you are starving.

5. In response, your body slows your metabolism to conserve energy, and begins actively storing fat to help preserve your life.

6. In the meantime, microscopic larvae that entered your body through eating, for instance, a hastily washed piece of fruit or uncooked fish, has matured, as it has found the perfect habitat in the toxic mucus that is now lining the 25 feet of your small intestines or in the fecal encrusted mucus that is lining your 5 foot long colon.

7. Many of the nutrients from the food you eat that would have gotten through your intestinal wall and into your bloodstream to provide you with nutrition and energy, are intercepted and siphoned off by hungry parasites.

8. After absorbing the nutrients from your food that you should have received, the parasites then excrete a toxic substance that triggers hunger and food cravings in their host (that would be you). This causes the host to crave (usually sugary foods), and when consumed, these sugars provide ideal living conditions, the food parasites thrive on, and the perfect maturation chamber for the millions of eggs they lay inside of you.

9. Meantime, your liver is working overtime to process this toxic build-up, but is being overwhelmed. So it begins increasing your body fat in order to create a safe place to store these excess toxins. A place that is as far away as possible from your vital organs and systems.

10. Once the toxins are pushed into the fat cells, the toxins saturate and surround the fat inside the cell, literally trapping the fat inside your fat cells.

The net affect these conditions have on your body, is they cause you to become overweight, make it extremely difficult for you to lose weight, and almost impossible for you to keep it off.

So, here's the bottom line... You are overweight, and can't lose weight or keep it off because:

a). Your body is aggressively holding onto your current fat reserves because intestinal mucus prevents nutrients from being absorbed, which makes your body think you are starving.

b). Since you are consistently receiving insufficient nutrients, your body has slowed your metabolism to conserve energy and fat reserves.

c). To process the overload of toxins in your body, your liver is actively producing more fat to create safe places to store these toxins.

d). You are experiencing more hunger and cravings for unhealthy (toxic) foods because hunger and food cravings are being triggered by harmful organisms in your digestive tract.

Will Diet and Exercise Effectively Impact The Conditions Above?

Not really. Clearly, to alleviate these conditions that are causing you to be overweight, and are making it very difficult for you to lose weight, you'd need to do the following:

a). Remove the toxic plaque that is interfering with your absorption and causing your body to respond as if it is starving.

The premise of Counterknowledge is familiar. The 'public domain' - the domain of reason - is under threat from an array of conspiracy theorists, religious fanatics, deluded postmodern academics and quasi-medical quacks.
The phenomenon is underpinned by the dynamics of turbo-capitalism, happy to promote the fraudulent along with the authentic, and from the untrammelled democracy of fools whose vast and expanding constituency is the internet.
The premise is persuasive, but it is also shooting fish in a barrel. Yes, the rise of Islam threatens the rule of reason and flirts with Holocaust denial. Yes, most alternative medicines are tosh. Yes, pseudo-histories such as The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail and 1421: The Year China Discovered America are unreliable and misleading. One can applaud the spotlight being thrown on these frauds once again. But it's not exactly front-page news.
The gullible, like the poor, are always with us.
With Counterknowledge, Damian Thompson attempts to move the argument beyond the marshalling of well-established facts by pointing out that the level of mass delusion is now rising to critical levels.
He suggests that the commitment to factual truth that once anchored mainstream news organisations is being eroded by fierce competition from the Blogosphere. He likewise worries that CAM - Complementary and Alternative Medicine - is finding its way on to university curricula and, increasingly, is being publicly funded through the NHS.
Meanwhile, in the universities, postmodernism, with its implicit assertion that one person's truth is as valid as another's, and its sacrifice of properly established evidence in the face of pressure from racial, sexual and minority pressure groups, has led to the mass-production of Higher-Ed magical thinking.
All these are fair points. But Thompson may be panicking unnecessarily. He struggles, for instance, to demonstrate that CAM is actually dangerous. He points to the great MMR vaccination scare as an example - which in fact had little or nothing to do with CAM.
Similarly, he worries about the popularity of 9/11 conspiracy theories peddled by internet hit films such as Loose Change. But no mainstream news channels give any credence to those theories whatsoever. Thompson uncovers one or two minor universities that teach CAM as if it were scientific medicine. Absurd, yes - but rare.
When he attacks pseudo-science he finds himself grouping Intelligent Design theories with Creationist Theorists and Darwin deniers. He admits, for instance, that he is unable to understand the arguments of Michael Behe, the professor of biochemical sciences at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania. Behe suggests that systems of irreducible complexity inhabit a cell which cannot be explained by evolution.
Thompson, unable to counter Behe's arguments, 'takes the word of the scientific community (who condemn Behe) on trust'. Which is fine, except that you have to bear in mind that scientists can also be prone to taboos.
Plate tectonics and quantum mechanics were both fiercely opposed by the majority of scientists and were considered pretty loopy. The same was true of global warming (global cooling was the great fear of most Earth scientists in the 1970s).The Big Bang theory was reviled by many cosmologists for the same reason ID is hated - because it implied some kind of theological origin to the universe. Perhaps Thompson is right in asserting that faith in scientists is the best we can do.
What is the appeal of counterknowledge?
It simply seems to make us feel safer. Such a random, threatening, act as 9/11 - the logic goes - could not have taken place as reported, because it implies a world out of control. The idea that Bush - tangible, visible and a well-established 'enemy' - organised it is less threatening than the idea that it was a distant, invisible ragbag of terrorists.
In an increasingly democratic world, people believe what they want to believe and then seek out 'experts' who will support their beliefs. Our uncertainties are assuaged, our fear of chaos is appeased. The fact that a theory may be manifestly untrue is neither here nor there. And the internet gives the conspiracy theorists the added kick of being part of a 'secret society' of believers.
All this is true. The problem is, what to do about it? Thompson makes a plea for 'business' - particularly serious book publishers - and state bodies such as universities and the NHS to be more rigorous.
Such urging is to be applauded, but it will not be enough to stop the spread of counterknowledge, because counterknowledge is the inevitable product of democracy, capitalism and the 'century of the self'.
This is a highly enjoyable, well-written book for the sceptic and one which can be deployed to great effect at dinner parties. But Thompson does not answer the central question: what do we do to promote real knowledge in a world where reality is something that more and more people wish to avoid?
CAM, to which Damian Thompson devotes a chapter, is examined in greater detail in Suckers: How Alternative Medicine Made Fools of Us All. As in Counterknowledge fish in barrels are manifest. Rose Shapiro skewers one 'cure' after another - pharmaceutically contaminated Chinese herbal 'remedies', sugar pills sold as homeopathic solutions, osteopathy based on 19th-century quackery.
But believers in this sort of thing will continue to do what most (overwhelming middle-class, middle-aged and female) followers do - hand over their money on the off-chance that the medicine might work without having to take prescription chemicals.
And they are not completely barmy, because such a transaction triggers the placebo effect (or the power of suggestion if you prefer) and therefore tends to produce a measurable result.
This is annoying for rationalists, but it seems quite useful. CAM won't work for me, because I think it's stupid, but it may work for someone who is susceptible. That doesn't seem to cause the rest of society any great harm and may even do it some minor good.
It is an unpalatable truth for rationalists like Shapiro and Thompson that not all lies are harmful.

Herbs to grow for tea-making

A: Garden plants with leaves that are commonly used to make herbal teas include cowslip (Primula veris) and lemon verbena. The flowers of German chamomile also make delicious herbal tea.

Other plants to consider include those that should only be grown in containers (they're rampant growers). Catnip, peppermint, spearmint and lemon balm also make flavorful teas.

Like most herbs, the leaves (or chamomile flowers) can be used either fresh or dried. Most herbs are not bothered by serious disease or insect problems. Use caution when using chemical controls on or near edible crops.

Q: A 30-year-old Cheyenne privet hedge I keep trimmed at 30 inches high is becoming straggly and might be dying. Can I try to rejuvenate it by pruning aggressively this winter?

A: Before taking any remedial action, try to determine why the plant is showing signs of decline. European privet (Ligustrum vulgare 'Cheyenne') is prone to anthracnose twig blight, a fungal disease that causes leaves to dry out and branch-killing cankers to form. It is also possible that the conditions in which your hedge is growing have changed over time. For example, it no longer might be getting enough sunlight.

Unfortunately, European privet, also known as common privet, and border privet (L. obtusifolium), are both non-native species that are considered invasive in the Chicago region.

Since your privet hedge is declining, and the plant is considered invasive, replacing it might be the best solution. Recommended alternative plants are common ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) and clove currant (Ribes odoratum). Since your current hedge is shorter, you also might consider Northern Charm boxwood (Buxus 'Wilson'). Growing only 3 to 4 feet tall, this slow-growing evergreen shrub will need less pruning to maintain the height you prefer, and performs well in shaded and filtered-sun locations.

Q: The leaves on my rhododendrons have looked shriveled this winter. Is there a problem?

A: Rhododendron leaves respond to cold winter weather by curling downward to prevent the loss of moisture through their leaves. When temperatures are slightly above freezing, they begin to curl. The curl becomes tighter as temperatures drop below freezing, and leaves will look shriveled when temperatures are in the teens. Leaves open again when the temperature rises.
