When one door closes, another window opens. On the way out, the door can slam pretty hard that it hurts, but it's a good pain to let you know that door may not be the right one to go through again. Look for a better way.

Little Mermaid's "Part of that World"

"Part of that world" is a song about a mermaid that longs to be human.... and humans fantasize about being mermaids (which was what I was last Halloween). Are we ever happy with what we have? I love how Jackie sings this song in the video below - she has a perfect Disney voice :)

This is a painting that I did about a year ago entitled "Bluoc Angel"

Bold bright colors depicting a blue nude young female sitting on the floor in between red curtain drapes, wearing a black ruffled skirt, looking back at us while having her arms crossed over her chest. Best described as fauvist / fauvism, French for "Wild Beast." Fauvism is art in bold, bright, pure colors in a spontaneous and unnatural manner. Matisse is a prime example of a Fauvist artist. This colorful painting will be a distinct piece for any artistic setting.

Saw Caravan Palace in Downtown Los Angeles Grand Performance

Tonight I just went to a live concert featuring Caravan Palace, a Parisian electronic-swing-house band that was performing in Downtown Los Angeles, courtesy of Grand Performances in the California Plaza. This was the first time that I had heard of the band, nonetheless witnessed their music. I was pleasantly surprised.

Caravan Palace's music was lively, unique, and totally danceable. So danceable that a 3 to 4 dozen of the crowd jumped into the plaza's water and started dancing to one of their songs... it was quite a sight that brought most of the rest of the audience to their feet. Sadly, the authorities had brought the dancing in the water to the end due to the bottom of the pool's construction.

The audience consisted of mainly artsy Los Angelinos and the rest of the citizens. Swing dancers were among the most active with stylish straw fedora hats. I wish I were wearing my dancing shoes and high-water jeans... not to say that I didn't sneak in a couple of moves myself.

I'm so happy that summer is here, although in Los Angeles, it is pretty warm during the day (80 - 90 degrees fahrenheit), however, it cools down pretty chilly at night.

Cello Makers Using a Ball Vise

Contrary to what I usually do, which is play an instrument, the other day, I saw some wood workers making instruments, cellos to be exact. It was really nice to watch because it's such a fine craft that requires such details.

Basically, the wood craftsman carved the body of the cello from raw wood by holding the piece of wood in place held down by a metal clamp type object which they called a ball vise. From there, they carve in the shape of the sketch on the wood.

It's amazing to see such a beautiful instrument take shape - the transformation from raw wood and strings to a deep, rich, warm, sounding musical piece of art just sent shivers down my spine (in a good way).

Gattaca is one of my all time favorite movies. It's about a man, despite his intense passion, intelligence, charm, and stunning good looks, lives in a society where DNA solely determines your rank and place in life. Therefore, he has to go through constant challenging obstacles to fake the system so that he can achieve his life long dream of space travel.

In this scene, Vincent (Ethan Hawke) is confronted by his younger brother, Anton, jealous of Vincent's further success despite Anton's "superior" DNA.

I have always had a great appreciation for music writers, producers, and artists, however, my appreciation for them grows even more every time I attempt to write or improve any of my original songs. This song from Royksopp has an amazing combination of modern electronic sounds, singable melodies, and emotional lyrics. It is a song of two lovers, caught up in the moment, so attracted, enraptured, intrigued with one another, however, scared of the other person's intentions, they dare not let themselves get carried away to fall in love for fear of being hurt.

This song admits the dangerous comination of lust and insecurity. However, I am unsure of the ending of the lyrics, is it "Deep down inside I know our love will survive" or "Deep down inside I know I will survive?" The first resolves their insecurity and the second accepts it.

ATB Autumn Leaves

I was in search of the French classic song "Autumn Leaves" written in 1945, music by Joseph Kosma and French lyrics by Jacque Prevert, later performed in English first by Jo Stafford. Instead, I had a wonderful surprise of finding a downtempo song of the same name from the Album "No Silence" released in 2004.

I must have been living in a cave because I wasn't that familiar with ATB (André Tanneberger from Germany) until I accidentally came upon the downtempo song, "Autumn Leaves" and fell in love.

What was surprising is that ATB usually produces some heavier electronic dance type of music, but this particular one, "Autumn Leaves" was slower, melodic, emotion-evoking-hurts-so-good with very very sad lyrics. I mean, check these lyrics out:
