Today I will be celebrating New Year's Day by gathering with family and friends. Half of my family comes from strong German roots and in a nod to that every January 1st we partake in eating Pork and Saurkraut which is said to bring good luck for the new year. I have always taken this tradition for granted accepting that it was what everyone did on January 1st. It wasn't until recently that I realized that this tradition is common only in a few places around the world, south central Pennsylvania being one of them. In this blog post I examine ten different traditional and good luck bringing foods from around the world, some of them you have heard of but many will probably seem strange and unfamiliar.

(Note: Some of the countries below do not celebrate their new year on January 1st as the U.S. and many western nations using the the Julian calendar do. I understand this but have chosen to include them regardless.)

Germany: Pork and Saurkraut

I was brought up on this stuff. As a child I refused to eat Saurkraut but now that I am older I enjoy and look forward to it. The effect that Saurkraut has on you when it first touches your palate is reminiscent of putting your tongue on a 9 volt battery. It kinda hurts but after a while you get used to it...please be aware I do not advise readers to eat or lick batteries. There wasn't much to do in rural Pennsylvania as a child...don't judge.

Ireland: Corned Beef Hash and Cabbage

The other half of my lineage is Irish, so I thought it only right to mention Ole Eire in this post. Despite my Irish roots, the first time I had Corned Beef Hash and Cabbage was New Years Day 2013. I enjoyed the way the dish tasted but I was nervous about the saltiness of it. I always tend to steer clear of meats that are salted which pretty much means all the meats ending in -ami are right out. Although it isn't spelled Corned Beefami my sodium chloride sense was tingling, so New Years Day will almost inevitably be the only day I ever have the dish.

France: Crepes and Fresh Baked Goods

Leave it to the French to bring in the new year by eating dessert. I never thought I'd say it but I think that French finally got one right. Out of all the foods on this list this seems like the runaway for tastiest and most delectable. Searching for the proper picture had my mouth watering Mmmm Mmmm. Crepes...Why did it have to be Crepes?

Brazil: Lentils

This is the part of the list where the cuisine being discussed will probably become unfamiliar to most American's. I have encountered lentils before in Indian food but for those who are not accustom to them I have provided a handy explanation.

Definition:

noun

plural noun: lentils

1. a high-protein pulse that is dried and then soaked and cooked before eating. There are several varieties of lentils, including green ones and smaller orange ones, which are typically sold split.

2. the plant that yields lentils, native to the Mediterranean and Africa and grown also for fodder.

So as you can see Lentils are a high protein pulse, which I realize is not that good of an explanation. The closest thing I can liken them to are beans, though I don't know if they are anything like beans on a anatomic level. Brazilians prepare Lentils in many was including: soup, with rice, and with squash.

Macedonia and Eastern Europe: Pork Cabbage Rolls

This is the third time in the this post that Cabbage has appeared in one way or another. Its place in European New Year's celebrations in uncontested. Cabbage rolls are a food that is enjoyed throughout the year in many Eastern European nations but the addition of pork is considered a staple for New Years Day celebrations.

India: Puri and Shrikhand

Indian Puri is a small wheat cake that is shaped into a circular biscuit or roll. It is often served as a breakfast dish but on New Year's Day it is commonly paired with Shrikhand which is a sweet yogurt flavored with saffron, cardamom, nuts, and fresh fruit.

Japan: Osechi Ryori

I would recommend taking a break from reading this post now to search for some more images of Osechi Ryori (and to officially subscribe to this blog). Osechi Ryori is an amazing dish to look at, it is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. Osechi Royori is traditionally served in a special box called a Jubako and there are numerous variations of food that can be ordered in each box. Foods that are commonly included are: lobster, black beans, pickled vegetables, sweets, seaweed, sardines, eggs, prawns, bream, and rice. There are many other foods that can be included in these boxes and as the picture above shows there is no shortage of choices.

Spain, Mexico, and Latin America: Grapes

In many countries with Spanish heritage it is tradition to eat 12 grapes on New Years Eve. This practice dates back to the late 19th century when vineyard owners pushed the ritual in order to sell more grapes. It is customary to eat one grape on each of the 12 clock strikes on December 31st when welcoming in the new year. So I guess technically this is a New Years Eve food but ohh well.

Iran: Polow

There is not much information available on why this is traditionally thought of as a New Years dish but from what I was able gather Polow usually consists of; Persian rice, vegetables, and a type of meat. Depending on where the dish is being served the meat varies between fish, beef, chicken, and lamb.

Russia: Russian Herring Salad

The final New Year's cuisine is the Russian Herring Salad which also wins the award for most heinous looking food on the list. In Russia, New Years is the biggest holiday of the year. Even larger than Christmas or Easter. This meal is also known as Dressed Herring, Fur Coat, or Herring Under a Fur Coat (that is what I will call it from now on). Herring Under a Fur Coat consists of herring covered with layers beets, potatoes, carrots, onions, mayonnaise, and apples. The purple color is the result of beet root mixed with mayonnaise but I personally don't trust it. Finally, the dish is garnished with egg yoke and chives. This dish is usually served in the "Zakuski"or appetizer phase of holiday meals, which is probably the best place for it because it makes whatever follows looks all the more eatable.

Keys and Legends #3: Best of 2013

One of my favorite sites to visit when I'm in need of a good mapfix is the Wired.com Map Lab. Today when I visited their site I was delighted to see that they had a new article about the best maps of 2013. Included in the article are 15 of best maps that this year has to offer and let me tell you, looking at them made me feel like a duck in water, a pig in mud, a kangaroo in the Outback, a crocodile in the Nile, a capybara in...well, you get the picture. I was pleased.

I have included the link to the article below. Some of the maps featured in the article are just still images but others are interactive maps which I encourage you to click on and play around with, to appreciate their beauty if nothing else. My favorites are maps 3, 7, and 14. Map three is a map of hurricane and cyclone paths since 1842. It is not interactive but in my opinion it doesn't need to be. The image is simple yet increasingly elegant. The pale blue hue of the ocean and continents contrasted with an iridescent white that represents the storms results in a truly powerful and educational image. Map seven is again a work of art, it represents wind patterns and velocity, but unlike map 3 it is more complex and is bustling with information. What is the best part you ask? It is that this entire map is updated every three hours with the newest information available. Please do yourself a favor and explore on this interactive gem. Map fourteen is the oldest map on the list and may be the one I love the most. It was created in 1817 and is a detailed side by side comparison of the earth's major rivers. It is drawn by hand and is the type of aesthetic work you don't see this day and age. The best part about this map however, is that it is wrong. When this map was published in 1817 the information it depicted was fact but today with the advent of satellites we are able to better measure and view the paths of rivers which has proven many statements on this map false. An example is that this map declares that the longest rivers are the Amazon (3375mi), Missouri (3365mi), and Yang'tse Kiang (2990mi). In reality the longest rivers are the Nile(4132mi), Amazon (3976mi), Yang'tse Kiang (3917mi), and the Missouri (3902mi) .

Meet Your Maker

I want you to imagine that you are at the movie theater and you are watching the newest blockbuster hit. Now fast-forward to part of the movie where all heck is breaking loose. The hero is in the midst of a life or death struggle to save his family and the world as we know it. Tensions are high, and the stakes are higher. There is no dialog during this scene, but there are two things. There is action and there is music.

The scene I just described to you could probably be taken from one of a hundred adventure or superhero movies. It seems that there are times in cinema when actions and music speak louder than words. If you don’t believe me let’s try another example. Now I want you to picture yourself at a different movie. The main character has tried their hardest, done everything within their power to succeed, and yet still things don’t go their way. Perhaps it is the death of a loved one, a breakup, or lost fortune. These are some of the most emotional heart wrenching moments that you find in movies but now imagine watching that same scene on mute. Does the emotion of the scene hit you? Are you affected at all? My guess is that if you watch the scene with volume it will be many times more emotional and real than if you watch it without sound.

When I was in middle school I had a brilliant music teacher who used this very technique to show my peers and me just how important music was when trying to convey emotions. It doesn’t matter if that emotion is fear, sadness, joy, or epicness, music is able to transcend genres. From my eighth grade music class I learned to respect music’s place in movies and now when I critique a movie the effectiveness of the music is one of the major areas I observe. My sister works at a local movie theater so I am able to see a lot of free movies and hear many film scores. From watching all these movies something troubling is becoming apparent to me. What is this troubling issue you may ask? It is that many of the big pictures, the most popular films of the last few years seem to have similar sounding scores. This notion got me to thinking, “who exactly is composing the music that we hear?” Is the music in major films the product of many different composers with maybe a few repeats? Or are there a few dominant players who control the industry? Below are the results of what I found…

Results

Twenty-four different composers have been responsible for creating the scores of the 40 highest grossing films of the 2010’s (Highest 41 if you include The Desolation of Smaug). That number works out to about 1.7 films conducted per each of the twenty-four composers on the list. That stat in and of itself is not bad. There are a few composers like Hans Zimmer that lead the pack and plenty of composers with only a single film to their credit but on a standard distribution curve these numbers would plot quite nicely. There is however more to this story than meets the eye and that comes in the form of the film score production studio: “Remote Control Productions.” You see many times composers act as their own bosses making deals to do films with music studios or being selected by directors (ex: John Williams and Steven Spielberg) but sometimes composers work for film score studios of which Remote Control Productions is an example.

What sets Remote Control Studios apart from other production studios is that it is massive and that it is owned by non-other than Hans Zimmer the number one man on our list. Remote Control Studios employees not 10, 20, or 30, but over 50 composers who are constantly working on movie scores and in addition to that they produce music for films which they are not directly composing. Many of the composers who are employed at Remote Control Studios have become very successful and are on the list I created above. This includes: James Newton Howard, John Powell, Steve Jablonsky, Henry Gregson Williams and production for Pharrell Williams. So let’s see what the results look like when we factor in all music that goes through Hans Zimmer and his studio.

13 Films with Music Scored by Remote Control Studios

These results mean that out of the 41 highest grossing movies of the past four years over 31% of them have been created or produced in some way by Hans Zimmer. This is an impressive feat but at the same time I feel like it leaves room for concern. I am a big fan of Zimmer’s work especially in the Pirates of the Caribbean series but I feel like since that it has been slipping some. Could we have a case of quantity over quality? Moreover, is it possible that because of Zimmer’s great success other composers are borrowing his style to create the popular sound that “everyone” wants to hear? I don’t know the answer, but what I do know is that when nearly a third of the music in popular movies sounds the same people are going to start to get bored and that will usher in change. The question really is will Remote Control Studios be part of the change or a casualty of it?

White Christmas (Keys and Legends #2)

Merry Christmas Bloggers!!! Odds are that like myself you are experiencing a Christmas that is less frozen and snow covered than you would like. Here in south central Pennsylvania during the last two weeks we have received a foot of snow only to have it melt during three freakish 60 degree days that were followed by a rain storm. So despite it being a brisk 26 degrees outside there is not a snowflake to be had. In the last ten years I can only remember three Christmases in which snow was on the ground and only one in which it was actually snowing. This got me to thinking...If it is so hard to come by the fabled white Christmas in south central PA where would a person have to be in the U.S. to avoid disappointment?

Below are two maps; one from USA Today with data from the National Climate Data Center and the other from Climate Central made using data acquired from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As one would expect these maps show that areas with higher elevation, higher latitude, and those areas prone to lake effect are the most likely to experience a Christmas that is white. If you are a resident of the Rocky Mountains / Catskills or Northern Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Idaho, Washington, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Montana, or Washington you are 90% certain to experience a white Christmas. Contrastingly, if you are a resident of the deep south or Florida you are more than likely outta luck. (Sorry Key West!).

As a side note you can see that these two maps are displaying more or less the same information. They both show high and low probability of snow in the same areas but the map from USA Today is considerately easier to interpret. The reason for this is that the USA Today map uses a qualitative color scheme. This means that the colors for each percentage are very different from their neighbors. (Example: the 26-40% range is a dark blue while the 41-50% range is gray.) This qualitative approach makes it easier for the eye to pickup on subtle changes especially in congested areas with a lot of change like Colorado or Nevada. The Climate Central map uses a sequential color scheme which means that you start with one color hue and change its saturation level as the percentages it represents change. In this case the darkest blue is no snow and the lightest blue - white is a very high percentage of snow. The sequential color scheme is a perfectly fine scheme in its own right but is not best suited for a map with complex changes such as this one.

So have a Merry White Christmas to those of you in the north and better luck next year to the rest of you, may the odds be ever in your favor.

I was recently scouring the web for unique maps when I stumbled upon a website called Pop Chart Lab (popchartlab.com). Pop Chart Lab is a site whose primary function is to design and sell posters, but these posters are not the kind you would find in a Walmart or Target. The posters at Pop Chart Lab are what results when graphic designers, mapheads, and nerds decide to hangout and make posters. Surprisingly, the final products are nothing short of stunning. Tackling the subjects of pop culture, food, technology, and beer the posters manage to walk a fine line between aesthetically pleasing and tantalizingly informative. Whether in the form of a map, infograph, or chart there is certain to be a poster of interest for just about everybody: From the beer connoisseur to fashion guru, the cheese wizz to the techie.

A Walk In The Woods

A snow storm came through south central PA recently and I couldn't resist taking my camera for a walk. All of these pictures were taken using my IPhone 5 and were polished with the help of Instagram.

Fun Facts:

-People buy more cakes, cookies and candies than any other food when a blizzard is in the forecast.

-A blizzard occurs when you can’t see for 1/4 mile. The winds are always 35 miles an hour or more. The storm must last at least 3 hours to be classed as a blizzard. If any of these conditions are less, it is only a snowstorm.

-An average snowflake is made up of 180 billion molecules of water.

It’ll Tickle Your Innards.

As far as company slogans go this has to be my favorite. To what company does this outrageous line belong you may ask? A laxative manufacture? Or Perhaps the creators of the next Elmo Doll? Nay, wrong on both accounts. This gem belonged to the beverage Mountain Dew when it was first released by Pepsi in 1965 (The full slogan was: “Yahoo Mountain Dew…It’ll Tickle Your Innards).

I was first inspired to write this post when visiting a Taco Bell. Upon ordering I found myself at the soda dispenser faced with the conundrum of selecting a beverage with which to wash down my delectable Crunch Wrap Supreme. The selection was not as difficult as one may expect. I did what any self-respecting Taco Bell connoisseur would. I went for the Mountain Dew Baja Blast (MDBB). A soda so sugary and so pure, that some liken it a nectar of life. MDBB is a style of Mountain Dew only found at Taco Bell establishments its flavor is tropical lime and it has been scientifically proven to accentuate and compliment the Taco Bell flavors.

As I was savoring this tropical limey cacophony of tastes it occurred to me that there may be other flavors of Mountain Dew that were sold exclusively like Baja Blast or that there could be some flavors that were no longer in circulation. Upon doing some research I was rewarded with the list of current and past Mountain Dews….which is simply incredible….Brace yourself…

That makes 40 different varieties of Mountain Dew created to date with 16 currently in production in the United States. I have only tried five of the various flavors and I tip my hat to anyone who has sampled even half of this carbonated cornucopia. In closing I would like to thank liquor, because without it there would be no Mountain Dew which was originally developed when two brothers from Tennessee didn’t think that was a good enough mixer on the market and decided to create their own. Incidentally, Mountain Dew is slang for moonshine.

I stumbled upon this article the other day and found it to be very interesting. According to a study conducted Ohio is the top swearing state in the U.S. and the 5th least courteous, meaning when people from Ohio swear at you its because they are ticked off and mean you malice. In contrast Maryland is the number two most swearing state but the third most courteous, so when they swear it is with goodwill toward men.

I Have a New Favorite Animal

I was recently asked what my favorite animal was. This may seem like a simple straight forward question, but for me it was not. The reason for all the difficulty was that this question involved two things that I love very much: Animals and Ranking things in lists. My first thought, was to ask whether I could break it down into favorite mammal, bird, fish, etc. But before I asked the question I shushed myself. This was indeed a simple question and it deserved a simple answer. So begrudgingly I went to my default, ace in the pocket, old faithful answer. The Malayan Tapir.

The Malayan Tapir has been my go to favorite animal for a number of years now. I like it because of its uniqueness, not many people have heard of it much less list it among their favorite animals. I also like it because it looks plain awesome, like an Elephant Pig or some science project gone astray. Don’t let the looks fool you though, Tapirs are more closely related to horses and rhinos than any other animal and the Malayan Tapir is the largest in the Tapirs Family and the only species of Tapir native to Asia. Despite my admiration for this majestic beast I knew that it no longer help the lofty position of my favorite animal. Over the next few days I thought about the myriad of animals I had viewed at zoos and aquariums, seen on TV shows, or read about in literature. I had some free time one evening and decided to watch a BBC TV series entitled “The Life of Mammals.” It was while doing so that I rediscovered an animal that I had first encountered a number of years ago. The Pangolin. (Not to be confused with Penguin)

Pangolins (of which the giant variety are my favorite) are simply stated an incredible animal and upon rediscovering them I knew instantly that I have found a winner. Pangolins look like an anteater in chainmail. A dinosaur crossed with a M1A1 Abram. An alien from another realm. However you describe them to appear they are arguably unlike any animal you have ever seen before. Pangolins come in a range of sizes but to avoid confusion I will focus on the giant pangolins that are native to sub-Saharan Africa. If my imaginative descriptions of pangolins from earlier didn’t paint a visual image of this creature for you than nothing will so simply refer to the images below. There are several traits that make the giant pangolin so cool, the most noticeable of these is probably the scales that cover their bodies. Other mammals have protective hardware; porcupines with quills and armadillos with tough plates, but no mammal other that the pangolin has scales. Moreover, these scales not only offer protection from large predators but also neatly overlap to provide protection from the bites of ants and other stinging insects that the pangolin feeds upon. Another power the pangolin possesses is the ability to emit pungent acid from a special set of glands; this acid is comparable to the spray of a skunk and is an effective way to deter predators. Finally, the giant pangolin is remarkable because it doesn’t use its front legs for walking. Instead it uses its back legs and tail for balance groping through the underbrush with the look of a drunken velociraptor. These animals can weigh up to 70lbs and reach 4.5 feet in length. Their scales are not those of a reptile or fish but are actually made up of keratin, the same stuff human figure nails are made of. Fortunately, pangolins are ranked as “Low Risk” on the conservation status list meaning that they are doing alright in the wild, we can only hope that this will remain the case and that this odd creature will continue to thrive.

Age of Internet Empires

If you are like me you probably find yourself surfing the web numerous times throughout the day. Whether it is on my laptop, Ipad, or Iphone I seem to always be connected. It is so convenient to whip out an Iphone to search for the answer to a question, or pull up Pandora while at work to listen to music. This obsession with connectivity is not only isolated to America, it is a global obsession. In this global obsession there are several major players, the sites that everyone seems to visit on a regular basis. A quick examination of my browser history showed that for me: Google, Yahoo, ESPN, and IMDB rank among my most visited sites. However, I am a twenty something American male, do any of my most visited sites stand-up on a global scale? To find an answer to this question I turned to...you guessed it...the internet. What I found was a delightful visual created by the Alexa Company that displays a political map of the globe and the most visited website for each country. Some of the sites will come as no surprise. Google and Facebook are numbers one and two with 62 and 50 countries respectively. After these juggernauts the list takes a drastic drop in both global influence and popularity in America. With Baidu(2), Yahoo(2), Al-Watan Voice(1), Mail.ru(1), VK(1), and Yandex(1) making up that lower tier the only site I have ever heard of much less used is Yahoo. The other sites are all largely entrenched in their native countries with Yandex in Russia and Baidu in China. Overall, the map is a fascinating testament to the global dominance of Google and Facebook and also the unwillingness of much of Asia to adopt western culture even in a globalized world.

The "Mad" Knight

Sadly, not many people know much about the American Revelation. Folks generally know that July 4^th is Independence Day although may don’t know why that day is significant (Insert tourist here: the civil war ended then…right?). Additionally, people know the big players such as Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and John Adams. But not many people, especially those in my younger generation can tell you why they are important or even more disturbingly, seem to care. It should not come as a surprise then that when I prompted some work colleges into a discussion on Revolutionary War Generals there was little said about anybody other than George Washington. Don’t get me wrong, Washington was amazing but there are many others whose combined effort helped win the war (or stifle the war effort as is the case with Benedict Arnold). Some of the under-appreciated leaders include: Nathanael Green, Henry Knox, Artemas Ward and dare I say it a Frenchman or two. However, my favorite revolutionary general is “Mad” Anthony Wayne.

Anthony Wayne was like myself, a Pennsylvania man. He was born in Chester County PA to a well off family and was raised (ironically) only a few miles from Valley Forge. As seems customary of many great minds from that day he held multiple professions. In addition to being a Major General in the Continental Army he also dabbled in: surveying, politics, and running a rice plantation. Wayne was graced by the fact that his family was friends with Benjamin Franklin; who in 1766 asked Wayne to survey land that he owned in Nova Scotia. Wayne’s relationship with Franklin helped to kick start his political career which was becoming prominent near the onset of the Revolutionary War. It wasn’t until the beginning of the war that Wayne’s name became a household name. He began his military career by raising a Pennsylvania Militia which was eventually incorporated into the Continental Army and for this action he was given the rank of Colonel. He and his men took part in many different engagements throughout the war including the battles of; Trois-Rivieres, Brandywine, and Germantown. Wayne’s two greatest victories and the ones that earned him his nickname were the battle of Stony Point and Green Springs. At Stony Point he was assigned to capture a British fort along the Hudson River. During this battle Anthony and his men preformed a daring night raid moving through a swamp to capture the superior British force. Anthony was struck in the head with shrapnel creating a severe wound but he continued the attack. At the battle of Green Springs he was outgunned yet led a successful bayonet charge against superior British Forces, thus securing the nickname “Mad” and earning him a promotion to Major General. Wayne would go on to sit on the Second United States Congress and on the Pennsylvania Legislature. He retired on his rice plantation in Georgia but was called back into duty to participate in the Northwest Indian War where he led multiple victories winning the war for the United States. Wayne would die 2 years later from complications of gout.

Many places and things would go on to be named in honor of Wayne. The towns of Waynesboro PA and Fort Wayne Indiana, as well as Wayne County PA are examples of this. There is even an Ohio based brewery (the Mad Anthony Brewing Company) named in his honor whose specialty brew is an Irish Stout proudly named “the Harry Baal’s.”

With all the pomp and circumstance surrounding Anthony Wayne it should come as no surprise that he would be incorporated into literature as well. In 1939 writer Bill Finger penned Detective Comics #27. It was about a millionaire industrialist who was brutally murdered. Unable to solve the crime police have to request backup from a private detective. This private detective goes on to solve the case and throw the murder into a vat of boiling acid. The detective’s name is Bruce Wayne and his secret identity: Batman. As it would turn out in the fictional world of DC Comics Bruce Wayne is a direct decedent of General “Mad” Anthony Wayne himself.

But wait….It gets better!

Several months ago I received a letter in the mail from my grandmother. We had been talking in depth about family genealogy and history and I had expressed interest in becoming the honorary family historian. Included with the letter was a family tree. As I examined the tree I began by reading the names, there was nothing out of the ordinary. My attention then turned to the typed notes that appeared off to the side of some names. My heart stopped. Then leapt. Then did a barrel roll. Typed neatly to the side of Richard Idding’s (my 7 greats grandfather) name was this message: Came to Chester County from Wales about 1700. His first son Richard was grandfather to “Mad” Anthony Wayne. Stunned for only an instant, I reexamined the chart with a newfound gusto. Take the Noecker side of the family carry the 4 add in a Cornelia Hall multiply by the power of Henry Iddings divide by the year 1700. It was all there. The math all added up. “Mad” Anthony’s Great Grandfather, and my 7 Greats Grandfather were one in the same. I was related to General “Mad” Anthony Wayne! But more importantly, I realized that I am related to Bruce Wayne….I am related to the coolest fictional superhero ever imagined….I am related to Batman!

He’s the relative that I deserve, but not the one I need right now. So I’ll forget to invite him to reunions because he can take it. Because he’s not my brother. He’s the silent third cousin twice removed, watchful kinsman. The "Mad" Knight.

We Are...Terrified

We Are… Series #1

When I was a junior at Penn State University I lived in an apartment with my good friend Blake and 2 completely random guys assigned to the same apartment by the management of the apartment complex. The guy’s names were Chris and Jeff; both were engineering majors and seniors at Penn State. In the beginning they seemed cool and the first few weeks went well considering that I was living with people I had just met. However, a month into the fall semester an event transpired that would come to prove that at least one of my new roommates was not cool after all. The apartment was set up like the diagram below depicts. I was in bedroom A, Jeff was in B, Blake C and Chris D. Each of us had our own bedroom and shared a bathroom with another person.

It was a Wednesday night and it was Jeff’s 22^nd birthday. He and Chris decided that they would head to downtown State College to celebrate by throwing a couple back. By a couple I mean quite a few. By quite a few I mean a lot. They left our apartment around 10:00pm, roughly the same time I was preparing to go to sleep. I had an exam the next day and wanted to get a good nights rest. I shut my bedroom door, turned off the light, got into bed, and promptly drifted off to sleep. I wasn’t asleep long when I was awoken by a loud crash. Snapping wide awake, my eyes strained through the darkness to see the source of all the commotion. I saw a dark figure standing in my doorway and noticed that my door had been violently thrown open so that it slammed against my closet door. I was paralyzed with fear. I must have looked pathetic lying in bed, covers pulled up to my chin, waiting motionless. The shadow began to come towards me and then I realized that it was my roommate Jeff. At this point I became less scared and more angry. Was he coming in to steal my things? Did he always invite himself into my room when I was sleeping?

I decided to lay in wait to see if I could catch him commit a crime. He first wandered over to my desk, then to my dresser; talking to himself the whole time. Eventually, he made his way to my closet and was looking at something on my top shelf. His next action was so swift that I didn’t have a chance to stop him but do I ever wish I had. In one fell swoop he lost interest with the top of my closet and looked down. It was at that point I heard the sound: zippppp! A second later I heard another sound. The sound of water running but this wasn’t water….

Simultaneously outraged and more terrified then ever I sat up in bed and yelled at him. This was folly and before I knew it I heard the post wiz zip and saw Jeff turning around. He stared at me but seemed to see right through me. I then in a not so kind voice shouted, “Jeff, do you know what you just did?!” Snapping out of his stupor he looked at me and got a big grin. He then took two steps towards my bed and said, “Scoot over, I’m coming in.” It was at this point that any fear remaining in me dissipated. “NO YOU’RE NOT!!!” I screamed and proceeded to jump out of bed and forcibly guide/push Jeff out of my room. Getting him into our conjoined bathroom I pointed to his bed room and told him to go. He spotted his bed, smiled that drunken grin, and ran into his own room. After which I promptly closed his door.

Realizing that I would have to see to the urine in my closed I turned on the lights to my bedroom. Cautiously, I peered in the closet and to my great delight (as delighted as one can be when there is wee in his closet) saw that he had managed to expel all his fluids perfectly into one of my duffle bags. Removing the bag I assembled my meager cleaning arsenal and went to work. I drained, toweled, and sprayed until I was satisfied, and then deposited the whole thing in the washing machine for good measure. Exhausted, I went back to sleep being sure to lock my door. In the morning, I confronted Jeff about the incident and…..he informed me that I made the whole event up and that it never took place. I was irate. He didn’t even have the courtesy to apologize for maybe doing it. To make matters worse Blake and Chris were not sure who to believe. I felt high and dry. Then a few weeks later Chris and Jeff went out a second time. This time Chris stayed sober and followed Jeff after they got home. To his astonishment Jeff went straight to my room and preceded to try and breakdown the door shouting, “Why is the bathroom locked?” Chris directed Jeff to the proper facilities and the next time we saw one another he proceeded to apologize for having ever doubted me. So the moral of the story? …When someone pees in your closet save the evidence!

Matchup: The Scipio AfricANUS’s vs. The Casual Dogs

I’ll try to keep this preview short, it shouldn’t be a problem because this week’s matchup will be a cakewalk. The hard opening to my season is over I beat: Matt, Michael, and Bob all of whom have solid teams and I am now entering a tranquil stretch. My next three games are against: Blake, John Doe, and Dave who have a combined record of 4-11. This fact has me quite relaxed and at ease about the outcome of the next few games. In three weeks I should be sitting pretty at 7-1 in an undisputed first place. Knowing that I don’t need to spend time fortifying my roster as I would for tougher matches has freed up my schedule. During all this extra time I got to thinking and one thought kept coming to the top of my mind: I BEAT YOU MICHAEL!!! (I beat you Michael is not actually the thought that kept coming to mind, but I couldn’t help myself! If you are reading this Michael I must let you know that it is lonely on top.)

The thing that I couldn’t stop thinking about was Blake’s team name; The Casual Dog’s. After considerable thought I have decided that this name is…is what? I cannot seem to form an opinion on it. When I asked Blake how he came up with name he started rambling on about his honeymoon and something about Maine and blah, blah, blah. It was all very wearisome and I lost interest quickly. I did however retain enough attention to notice that Blake’s team was without a mascot. So, cute honeymoon tale aside I set out on a search scouring the web for “Casual Dogs” in the most literal sense of the term. These are my top votes for Blake’s new mascot:

Silent But (Not So) Deadly

Warning: certain aspects of this story have been dramatized to enhance the storytelling effect. All events are based on a true story.

A piercing cry sliced through the cold silent air like the sharpened blade of a knife. I instantly stood to my feet, my ears straining to hear if the cry would come a second time. Moments later it did. It sounded as though it was the cry of a woman in her mid to late 30’s and it was close. You could hear the panic in her voice by the way the last syllables in the word she was screaming raised an octave or two. The word was HELP! Quickly churning, my brain lept into action I made for the sound but there was something wrong with my eyes, I couldn’t see right, what was wrong with them? It was almost as if a fine mist had settled upon them. In an effort not to delay aiding damsel in distress I pressed forward rubbing my eyes, throwing all caution to the wind. Moments later, my vision started to partially return, the massaging of my retinas seems to be working at least for the time being. Good, one crisis at a time. I had determined that the cry for help was coming from the southwest and I started heading in that direction. It didn’t take long before I stumbled upon the whole disgusting scene. To the left was the woman, my estimates were correct she looked to be in her mid 30’s. She was tall; probably 5’9, thick around the hips and waist, with a pale complexion and blonde hair. Despite the horror that was etched upon her brow you could tell that she had lived a good life she was probably into home décor, soap operas, and the like. Additionally, she probably had some generic American name like Samantha or Sherry or one of a thousand others. Regardless, of her name or her background I could tell her fear was real, following her gaze I saw the source of all the tension and anxiety. Perched upon the wall not three feet from her head was…Halyomorpha Halys!! That’s right you heard me, Halyomorpha Halys. Better known as; The common stink bug.

Now, I know what you are thinking: I read the warning at the top but seriously what actually happened because that dramatization was absurd. For you killjoys out there that thought that, shame on you for ruining a good story but I will humor you by summing up more a more realistic account.

Account 2:

I was sitting in my cubical at work. It was freezing! The AC was cranked on high and the vent underneath my desk was aimed at an unforgiving angle. I mean seriously; who puts an AC vent underneath a desk and who runs the AC in October? I had been working on adding applications to a computer database when I heard one of my coworkers start whining. This was not a new occurrence, especially for this particular coworker, so I proceeded to ignore her. In a bold change of tactics she stopped whining nonsense sounds and started whining, “Sean, help me.”

I could no longer pretend to ignore her so I rose to my feet. I must have stood up a tad too quickly. That coupled with the fact that I had been staring at a computer monitor for the last few hours caused my eyes glazed over gave me the instant feeling of dizziness. I sat back down to regain my composure. I was determined not to make the same mistake a second time. I made sure all prior symptoms had been resolved as I readied myself for attempt two. I didn’t want to pull a hammy. Successfully, standing I exited my cubical to the left (southwest) and walked 10 yards to where all the commotion was taking place. The person responsible for this particular outbreak was a 5’9, blonde haired, pale skinned, 30 something coworker of mine named Samantha Sherry (Poor girl has two first names). She was bouncing up and down like a 4 year old girl who had to pee and was pointing at a wall several feet away. Reaching her I inquired as to what the problem was and she informed me that there was a bug. I use the expression, “She informed me” loosely because at this point she was still whining, bouncing, and failing to communicate successfully. Fortunately, my eyes had recovered from the computer induced slumber enough for me to see the Stink Bug chilling on an opposing door frame.

Shouldering my manly duties I readied to smash the bug into yesterday when Samantha Sherry said, “No don’t kill it!” Astonished, more by that fact that she had finally used big girl words than by what the words actually said, I steadied my blow. Turning to face her I said nothing but gave her a look that did more talking in a quarter second than ten hours of her whining ever could. She seemed to interpret my thoughts and started backpedaling explaining that she didn’t want to kill the Stink Bug she just wanted it removed from her presence. Sighing, I gingerly picked up the bug and carried it to a nearby door sending it on its way. Turing around to head back into work I caught a glimmer of some movement out of the corner of my eye. Glancing over at the movement I thought I saw what looked like another Stink Bug on the outside wall of my workplace, I knew this couldn’t be right so I did a quad-take to be sure my eyes were not cheating me. To explain a quad-take is twice that of a double take. Needless to say it jars your brain around. I do not recommend it if you are prone to getting concussions, have asthma, or are currently pregnant. The quad-take confirmed my suspicions. There was indeed another Stink Bug on the wall, but it didn’t stop with one. The entire wall was crawling with them, the invasion had begun. Feeling outgunned, I retreaded to my cubical and quickly lost myself in some work.

The whole episode was very taxing and it was one I do not hope to soon repeat, but it did start my brain churning. Ten years ago I am certain there were no Stink Bugs in South Central Pennsylvania. 5 years I am reasonably certain that there were no Stink Bugs in South Central Pennsylvania. Yet now, in October 2013 there is a viable stink-pocalypse descending upon PA. How did this happen? What is the story behind this stinking menace? and dangit why do I always crave Chipotle when they are around?

As it turns out the Stink Bug is a native of Southeast Asia: China, Japan, and Korea. They were accidentally introduced to the United States in the late 1990’s and the first specimen was collected in Allentown Pennsylvania by researchers from Muhlenberg College. Since then the Stink Bug has been shown itself to be an effective traveler and now takes up residence in the majority of the United States. The Stink Bug prides itself in being an agricultural pest. It is known to feed on; apples, peaches, cherries, soy beans, and sweet corn. Pretty much everything humans like to eat, Stink Bugs also like. The way they damage fruit is by a technique known as cat-facing. What is cat-facing you ask? Well, I’ll tell you! Cat-facing is the scarring or deformation of any fruit or vegetable. In the case of the Stink Bug it is a result of feeding on the fruit through its proboscis (straw like) nose. Most often this scaring is found near the blossom end of the fruit and it is also normally only a shallow wound. This means that normally a cat-faced (<-- Doesn’t that just sound dirty?) fruit is still good to eat, you just need to cut away the bad areas. Unfortunately for farmers, people want shiny, plump, untainted fruit. So selling products that have been cat-faced is bad business.

Luckily, Stink Bugs are, as the name suggests bugs. This means that will die in a few days right? Wrong.

The stink bug can live for longer than a year and it is able to survive winter. The bugs will crawl into any nook and cranny they can find to gain warmth. Your home is fair game as you have probably already discovered. Once finding a warm area the Stink Bug goes into a hibernation mode until it becomes warm outside. That is unless the warm place they find is your home, in which case they will fly around your ceiling lights repeatedly smashing their faces against the bulbs. Post hibernation the bugs head outside to reproduce. Some positives are that research shows Stink Bugs are not poisonous and will not lay eggs inside houses, so you need not worry about a colony taking root under your bed. (I bet that last comment will keep some people up wondering at night).

As for the stink from which Stink Bugs so aptly get their name; researchers believe it is a defense mechanism used to deter predators. Science has yet however to explain why that smell is almost identical to that of cilantro. Perhaps those were not chicken burritos after all.

Fantasy Football Week 5 Recap: The Scipio AfricANUS vs. The Renegade Angels

As I noted in an earlier post, my week 5 game was a grudge match. It was a textbook example of good vs. evil. I was playing our league commissioner Michael. He had just come off a record breaking win against his brother Matt and was basking in his undefeated glory. On the other end of the spectrum, I had come off an embarrassing loss to the Arizona Braddlesnakes and had slipped to 3-1 in the league. I needed a win in week 5 in order to maintain my place as a forerunner in the league and to keep Michael in check. The last thing this league needs is an undefeated Michael. If he remained undefeated the rest of the league managers would constantly be reminded how terrible and worthless they were.

Going into Sunday’s matchup I was met with some unfortunate news:

-My starting running back Alfred Morris had a bye week so I couldn’t play him.
-My starting wide receiver Calvin Johnson was injured and would not be playing.
-My other starting running back Darren McFadden was also injured and would sit out.

It just so happened that when I received this news Michael was with me, so as I was trying to enjoy lunch I was being mocked and laughed at. It was going to be a long day. Fortunately, I didn’t have to watch the games on television because Michael and I were busy brewing beer with our buddy Blake owner of the 1-4 Casual Dogs. Throughout the afternoon we would check for updates on our iPhones and it looked dreadful at first. My players were simply not producing. However, as the afternoon progressed I started to notice something; while my players were not producing numbers, it seemed that Michael’s were not producing numbers either. I felt a ping of hope, but I suppressed it. Never trust a hope, it has forsaken these lands. We had to make a trip to Home Depot and upon returning I was still in the lead, my team was terrible but there it was; me in the lead by 10 and it was nearing five in the afternoon. It looked as though my late acquisition of Ravens RB Ray Rice (ßfour R’s in a row? How often does that happen?) was paying off nicely as he went on to earn a season high of 20 points. When eight o’clock came and the last seconds rolled off of the Broncos vs. Cowboys game my roster had been spent. I was sitting at 114.8 points and Michael was at 83 with three players left to play.

The players left in Michael’s arsenal were Arian Foster (RB), Tony Gonzalez (TE), and Matt Bryant (K). Foster played in the Sunday night game scoring 11.5 points narrowing the gap. On Monday there was radio silence between Michael and I we were waiting for the Monday night game to finish this fight. I opted out of staying up til three in the morning to watch the game and called it a night early. When I woke the next morning, I shut the alarm off on my phone and saw that I had 2 unread messages. One was from Matt saying, “YOU DID IT!!” And the other from Michael said, “Enjoy you day in the sun my friend, it won’t last long.” Confused, because I was still half asleep, it took me a moment to piece together what they were talking about, but when I did I smiled, picked up my phone and began typing: “Hey Michael, remember that time when you were undefeated in fantasy and then lost to me?” I hit send. Resting my head back on my pillow I exhaled a long breath and with it escaped a hardy chuckle. I had done it. I slayed the Renegade Angel. All was right with the world once again.

The Union Station Anomaly

On Saturday Michael and I went on an adventure to pick Matt up from Union Station in Washington D.C. Matt was taking a Mega Bus from UNC Charlotte where he attends school, to D.C. the closest bus stop to South Central PA.

Michael and I were delayed in our leaving because his dad had mysteriously disappeared with the car we were going to take for the trip down. We were scheduled to leave at noon and around 11:30 Bob said, he was going to take the car to get gas at a nearby gas station. Forty-five minutes later he had yet to return, I was starting to get antsy and Kathy, Bob's wife was getting nervous that Bob was hurt. We called his phone several times receiving no answer. Finally, I decided to look outside and to my glee saw that he was in the driveway adding oil to the Pacifica. Auto maintenance completed, Michael and I embarked on the journey. We spend the first hour or so of the trip in silence, listening to the new Alter Bridge CD. Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti are both beautiful men. Mmm mmmm!!

About an hour after leaving I got a text from Matt that said, “This bus sucks goat scrots." It pleased me to see that he was having a nice ride. Mike and I made excellent time to D.C. gaining back all of the time we had lost with the late start. When we were approaching the Capital Building our GPS started to freak out. It would reroute without a moment’s notice and Michael had to pull off several high velocity hairpin reverse 180 degree descending K-turns in the midst of 4 lanes of moving traffic. Incidentally, this is also the name of Shaun Whites new snowboarding trick, but trust me it is significantly more difficult to maneuver in a Pacifica.

Mustering all of my geographic might aka reading road signs, I was able to direct us the remaining several blocks without the help of Siri and her tomfoolery. We had Union Station in our sights when a strange thing started to happen. It was as if an invisible force was pulling us into the Union Station parking garage, which was not where we wanted to go. We tried to break away from this invisible force, heaven knows we tried, but we could not shake its grasp and we found ourselves being ushered through a ticket lane which presented us with a parking voucher that stated it would charge us $8 an hour to park. Michael was not pleased and determined not to pay $8, he sped through garage to the exit, inserted the ticket into the machine and to his great delight (and my disappointment) the gate opened without making him pay. About the same time, I got a text from Matt that said his bus was running 30 minutes late. Michael and I decided that we would drive around to see if we could find another place to park that would not cost as much as $8. Exiting the garage we took a right and drove for several blocks before taking another right we were driving down a back street when we passed an establishment whose name proclaimed it to be Martin’s Market. Beneath the name they proudly declared that they sold beer 24/7. This opposed to 24/6 or 12/7. Martin’s had seen better days. Its windows were boarded and there was spray paint covering many of the walls. There may or may not, but definitely was a roach infestation and I am certain the rats had taken up residence as well. Fortunately, this had not deterred the management and Martins displayed an open sign hanging crookedly in the door. Michael shuttered and said, “That is not a market.”

Driving on we took several more turns before coming to the intersection in front of Union Station, this time from the East instead of the North. Again a strange thing happened and we found ourselves being corralled towards the parking lot, I saw Michael struggling with the wheel, but he wasn’t strong enough and up the ramp towards the parking lot we went. This time, right before the entrance we noticed a sign that promised an auxiliary exit back on to Columbus Circle if we turned left instead of right. Seeing a glimmer of hope Michael hung a Louie and we proceeded down a ramp which dumped us out on the southwest side of Union Station. We decided to regroup and create a game plan before driving into folly again.

We drove down Louisiana Avenue and decided that this time we would check to see if there were any parking meters open as we were driving past and if that were to fail (it failed), we would try to pull into the dropoff/pickup lane located in front of Union Station where we would sit with our blinkers flashing until Matt called us saying he had arrived at which time we could attempt a drive-by pickup (this also failed. <--foreshadowing is cool). We circled the block so we were heading Northeast on Louisiana Avenue on direct path to Union Station, we struck out on finding any parking spots so Michael worked his way into the left lane with finesse and we was able to navigate into the dropoff/pickup lane without getting sucked into parking garage lane. Things were going as planned. Almost all of the pickup spots were filled but ahead in the distance we saw an open spot like a beacon atop a light house signaling safe harbor. Michael guided the nose of the Pacifica towards the spot, and then…disaster struck. The spot was not an oasis after all but a trap. It was a handicapped spot. Veering left we sailed passed the spot and were forced to turn left at the light. A dark chill came over the Pacifica, Michael and I sat dumbfounded as the ramp to the parking garage loomed before us with outstretched arms. There was nothing we could do, so we ascended the ramp of death yet again.

It was at this point that I realized we were dealing with an anomaly. Like something out a Doctor Who episode, the Union Station Parking Garage was not of this world. I turned to Michael and explained to him that we might as well just pay the $8 (by “We” I mean He) and be done with it. Michael agreed, but I could tell paying the $8 went against the very fiber of his being.

When getting out of the Pacifica I received another text from Matt informing us that he was still 20 minutes away. We decided to head into Union Station to see if we could locate a bathroom. Once inside I was immediately impressed with the architecture. The rounded ceilings were inset with an Empire State molding that transported ones imagination back to the turn of the 19^th century. Many of the floors were covered in a mosaic of blue tiles and the stairways looked as if they had been removed from Gatsby’s estate. Union Station contained one other 19^th century throwback: the glaring shortage of BATHROOMS!!! Union Station has 3 levels, is longer than a football field, and I have concluded it to have the lowest bathroom to square foot ratio of any enclosed structure in the western hemisphere. We walked the entire length and found nothing. Went to a different floor and found nothing. Not even a woman’s bathroom (for Michael to use) or a sign directing us in the right direction. Finally, just as my resolve was about to falter we stumbled upon a men’s restroom. Out of blind luck or divine intervention I do not know, but what I do know is that it couldn't have come soon enough.

Freshly pampered Michael and I decided to go back to the bus deck to wait for Matt. Stepping off the escalator we made for the Greyhound Station when out of the corner of my eye I caught glimpse of a lanky homeless man walking my way. It was Matt, we had found him at last. Back in the car we set our sights on our second destination of the day; Anita’s Southwestern Restaurant in Leesburg, VA. Our infatuation with Anita’s goes way back and is primarily a result of their Mexican style breakfasts. We make several pilgrimages to Anita’s each year to rejuvenate the soul and clog the artery. On our way to Anita’s we went through 2 separate toll booths of which Matt and I made Michael pay. The first booth was only $1.75 but Michael got us stuck in a coins only lane and we were about a nickel shy of being in a very tight spot. The next booth had a $5.10 fee. Again, I got to see a small part of Michael’s soul wither away, but this time Matt was able to enjoy it with me. Michael’s spirits were lifted a bit when we passed Dulles International Airport. He assured Matt and I that every pilot is “Ice Cold” for being able to land a plane. From there on just about every sentence was ruined by Michael interrupting us by whispering “Ice Cold” under his breath.

When I am not working or writing posts that rip on my friends one of my favorite things to do is get outdoors. This most typically takes the form of hikes, walks, or jogs. I am fortunate enough to live in an area where there is little road traffic and where nature remains mostly free from human influence. My family also owns an old dairy farm which gives me access to private land where I can think, pray and walk in peace. Fall has beseeched southcentral PA and with the changing of the seasons the forests have turned into a mosaic of firey oranges and burnt reds. Yesterday, I had some free time and went out for a walk armed with nothing but my IPhone for pictures, and my Pug Frankie as my walking companion. The weather was amazing and nature was blended in a picture perfect swirl of Summer and Fall. It was an amazing way to clear my mind and to burn off a few calories.

Fantasy Football Week 5

Week 5 Matchup: the Scipio AfricANUS’s (3-1) vs. Renegade Angels (4-0)

It is week five of the fantasy football season. I am off to my best start ever since joining the league 3 years earlier. I won my first three games, put up the second highest amount of total points, and looked like I could be the best team in the league. Then week 4 struck. I was projected to blow out my competitor by over 50 points but week 4 had different ideas. Aside from my QB and DEF, only two other players scored touchdowns: Graham and Johnson. It is hard to win a game when people don’t score. I made some poor coaching choices about who to start and in the end I lost to the Braddlesnakes by 4 points, a heart-breaker. To make matters worse I play Michael and his Renegade Angels this week.

While I was on losers row, Matt and Michael were having an old fashioned slug-fest. Matt, Michael, and myself have proven ourselves to be far and above the rest of the competition in the league so their game with both of them 3-0 at the time was destined to be entertaining. Their matchup reminded one of a heavy weight boxing match where the two fighters stand toe to toe and land haymaker after haymaker on each other’s chin. (It’s not about how hard you can hit, but how hard you can get hit and keep pushing forward!!) Perhaps a better metaphor would be that of civil war ironclads duking it out. I lob my missile you lob yours. Payton Manning put up 47 points for Matt. Phillip Rivers puts up 51 for Michael. Matt’s four running backs earn no less than 18.5 points per person. Mikes DEF gets 35 points. It was insane. I struggled to earn 120 points last week while, Matt earned 180 and lost. Michael went on to win, and break every scoring record set in the last four years by putting up 238 points. It was impressive…

The fact that Michael won while, Matt and I lost was bad enough. But now he reigns as the only undefeated team in the league and he has the all-time scoring record. This wouldn’t bother me if it were David or Jeff or even John Doe because they don’t brag. Michael however, is a totally different beast.

Michael will never let you live down that fact that you lost to him. Here are some examples of texts received from Michael during a group text conversation that Matt, Michael and I are part of.

11:00pm Monday – Dudes I said at the beginning of the season that I have the best team, and your scoffed at me, will do you believe me now you taints?

12:01pm Tuesday – Matt it’s over, I have the best team, and Foster scored more than Charles, na na na na boo boo, stick your head in doo doo.

12:29pm Tuesday – Sean I’m coming for you next week.

3:30pm Tuesday – I understand that you guys are jealous of my perfect fantasy team and a perfect record but lets be civil.

4:51pm Wednesday – Dude Matt several times during class today, my mind drifted to how I beat you in fantasy football this week, and a smile came to my face.

11:17am Thursday – Hey Matt remember when Arian Foster scored more points than Jamal Charles and I beat you in fantasy?

This sample accounts for about 1/20 of the total texts sent. It is relentless. It is brutal. Matt and I have considered many options to end the torment. Most recently, Matt suggested that we get Michael into a car and sacrificed ourselves by driving it off a cliff, just to end his reign of terror. I quickly assured Matt that if we did that we would be giving Michael exactly what he wanted. No, There is only one way that it can be brought to an end. Michael must be beaten, and only two people in the league stand a snowballs chance of doing so. Matt has already fallen and will not face Michael again til the end of the season. That leaves me, standing between peace from persecution and 8 weeks of Michael bragging. His smug texts have woken me in the middle of the night, this offends me highly. Justice must be served. This whole episode is reminiscent of the Rocky Saga. I (Rocky) have beaten Matt (Apollo Creed, which I did week 3) and we are now best buds. Out of nowhere some Russian Jerk (Michael) shows up and kills my friend Apollo. There is nobody else left to stand up to this cocky roid-infested mongoloid. I have to battle him, and a battle it shall be.

The projected scores have me winning 126 to 120, I however am not as optimistic. Many of my players are listed as ‘probable’ or ‘questionable.’ I believe my team at full health can take on Michael but without full health there is only one way that I can obtain victory. I must control the Bull. I know what you’re thinking: you spelled ball wrong and how can to control it? Wrong. I did not spell ball I spelled Bull. The story of the Bull is old and it is not one I shall tell today but it is essentially this: at certain times, for reasons incalculable to mortal man a person will get a hot streak and that streak will defy logic. The bull was strong with Michael last week, and reason stands that it will stay with him this week. If however, the scales of Bull shift in my favor, I can pull victory from the clutches of defeat. I can slay the Renegade Angel.

Fantasy Football Pre-Season

This week marks week 5 of the NFL season and more importantly week 5 of my fantasy football season. I am in a ten team league that is made up of friends from church and from college. This league has been in existence for four years now with different people subbing in and out each year but the original members still making up over half the league. One thing that must be explained about this league is that we are relentless in our verbal bashing of each other. This league does not award the winner with money, prizes, or trophies. The victor gets bragging rights and these are worth their weight in gold. This entry will sum up league background information while, the next will explain importance of my matchup this week. I realize that I am beginning my record of the league five weeks into the season but things are just starting to heat up so it’s as good a place as any to begin.

Part I The Manager Breakdown:

TBS would be proud of our league because it is composed of characters. The original members who are present in the league are: Matt Negro, Michael Negro, Bob Negro (I swear I’m not making up that last name), Jeff Parsons, David Filler and myself. The new members are: Brandon Gilbert, Bradley Filler, Blake Stone, and John Doe (John Doe’s name is not really John Doe. That one I made up). Most everyone in the league is good friends or relatives so it means that we know each other well enough to be downright rude to each other and get away with it. The one exception to this rule is John Doe. I don’t know John Doe. I don’t like or dislike John Doe as a person but his addition to the league was a last minute snafu that our league manager Michael created when he decided to take a trip to Disney World instead of focus on the league. (More to come on Michael’s incompetence later.) To conclude, my reason for calling John Doe by the name John Doe is simply that I do not know the name given him by his mother. The very fact that I do not know his name makes ripping on him difficult. Observe:

Example 1: Hey Matt, Arian Foster is gonna mop the floor with you so hard you won’t know what hit you.

- This is a good insult it:

o Addresses who the person is I am trying to insult.

o States what is going to happen to them.

o Tells them who will be carrying out said insult.

o Quickly executed.

Example 2: “Hey! Yeah you over there!! No, not you! The guy in the red shirt! No,ugh, not the one in the red button down, the one in the red t-shirt. *guy gestures to himself* yes you, I’m gonna destroy you so bad in fantasy football this week that you will loath the day you were born!!” Red shirt guy aka John Doe aka Los Angles Xtreme, “Wait? I thought this was fantasy soccer?”

- Now you can see how not knowing a person’s name can ruin a good insult.

Overall, a pretty strong set of names. Michael has been rocking the same name for 4 years and probably will continue to for the next 4. Bob changes his every week he was previously the Gridiorn Gang, then the Gettysburg Gridiorn Gang, then the Royal Gettysburg Gridiron Gang (RG3) after his acquisition of Robert Griffin the 3^rd. Now he goes by the Toledo Mudhens which he has stuck with for about 37 seconds so we will see how long it lasts. Jeff is referencing the popular Ayn Rand novel Atlas Shrugged with his team name which I respect (It is always wise to respect a good pop culture reference). My personal favorite aside from my own name is that of David Filler’s Team Team, that name is teaming with well, teams.

I decided upon my name because at the time of the draft was reading the book “How Great Generals Win” by Bevin Alexander. This book takes an overview of many of history’s most prominent generals; Napoleon, Genghis Kahn, Robert E. Lee, and Scipio Africanus to name a few. Prior to reading HGGW my knowledge on Scipio Africanus was minimal at best but reading that book as well as others opened a whole vat of knowledge about one of the greatest oft overlooked generals of all time. Let me explain, no, there is too much. Let me sum up; the two great powers in the world at that time (200 B.C.ish) were Carthage and Rome and at the time Rome was the underdog of the two. Carthage had navel superiority and possibly the greatest general ever (up to that point) leading them: Hannibal Barca. Carthage had conquered Rome’s Western lands in Spain, marched an army that included elephants over the Alps (1 elephant survived the foray. Mountians 1 – Elephants 0) and had planted his vast army in the heartland of Rome. Rome’s back was against the wall, they needed a hero quick *que hero music now*and they got one in Scipio Africanus. He destroyed Carthage in Spain, beat Carthage in Rome, then decided to make it personal by taking the fight across the Med to Carthage itself (Med is short for Mediterranean Sea do please keep up.) Squaring up against Hannibal himself for the first and last time at the battle of Zama Scipio Africanus used formation ingenuity, cavalry tactics, and trickery to destroy Carthaginian army in such as was to ensure that they would never threaten Rome’s military superiority again.

I thus named my team after the great Scipio Africanus because I plan to run a play from his book and drive the members of this league into the sea humiliating them with one victory after another (I will be humiliating them with my victories, would be a trifle odd to humiliate them with their own victories). Additionally, I felt it irresistible to go without accentuating the fact that Old Scippy boy has the word anus featured prominently in his last name. Thus, the Scipio AfricANUS’s were born.

On draft day I felt that I probably had the fourth best team. My strategy was to draft a QB late and in the early rounds pick up RB’s and skill players. The first five picks of my draft were as follows:

4. Jimmy Graham (TE)

5. Darren McFadden (RB)

The best pick of the draft so far has been Jimmy Graham TE from New Orleans. I had him two years ago in his rookie year and he was a beast. Time has only made him more dangerous. The biggest question mark on my team is Andrew Luck at QB, he’s a good football player but whether he will be fantasy good is a different question. (Answer: it’s week 5, Luck is a consistent 30 points a game).

Part IV Conclusion

Hopefully, this year of fantasy football goes better than previous years where I was riddled with injuries that allowed my team to self-destruct. I am not gonna sugar coat it past years haven't been pretty. My last three seasons all finished with me missing the playoffs and that's a kind way of putting it. My first season I had 3 wins. My second I had 4 wins. My third I had 5 wins. Improvement, but terrible. I can simply hope that the man himself will carry me through to victory. (See Man Below).

Scipio Africanus in the Flesh...or marble....

This is not my first attempt at writing a blog. Nor is it my second. What I am embarking upon is my third attempt to kick-start my blogging career. My first attempt lasted about fifteen minutes I spent the bulk of the time trying to decide upon which blogging site to use. “Well, Wordpress is free and it has a nice app but people are always complaining about plugins not working …and Blogger or is it Blogspot? I don’t know, I don’t really care, but it’s owned by Google that’s good right?... Wait, you’re telling me that there are some blogs that you pay to use? Well, those must have some inherent advantage correct?” Needless to say I decided upon Wordpress and was gung-ho, I was about to start a blog!! I set up my account, added the username the password and then was asked for the title of my blog. Title? I realized I had gotten all caught up in the excitement of making a blog that I didn’t know what I was going to call it or for that matter even what it was going to be about! Defeated, I turned to the television for inspiration and promptly forgot all about my blog. Blogs 1 vs. Blogger 0

Fast-forward one year, a little older, a little wiser. I was beginning my second attempt at creating a blog! This time I was not to be denied! Plus, I had come prepared; I knew I was going to use Blogger. I did my research; I understood that Blogger was for the casual blogging individual. The type of person that wanted to blog but not run an internet domain. The type of person who to customize and make their blog look nice but not have to major in visual design or care about art (Disclaimer: I do not care about art.) to do so. On top of knowing what blogging interface I was going to use I had a secret weapon. I had a name for my blog. That’s right, a name. It was going to be called “The Life and Times of an Almost Ginger.” The name was a play based off of that color of my auburn hair and the long standing debate between friends as to the true color of my hair. Brown or Red? Did I have a soul or was I some hideous beast? The blog was created and it went strong for roughly a month. Then due to my over ambitious nature it started crumbling. Legend has it that remains of this blog can be found littering the web til this very day. I wanted to publish a very strong blog post every day. Unfortunately, doing this quite a bit of time and work, blogging in conjunction with an externship and work didn't leave much time for anything else and I found myself burnt out. But the truth is that in addition to not having time, and feeling burnt-out I did not have a goal for my blog. There was not an end I was trying to reach. Without a heart all things die quickly. Fast-forward one more year, a little older, a little wiser, a college graduate! Hello, blogging world it’s time for round three. This time around I have again decided to use Blogger as my website, and I have chosen a name; “Here Nor There.” This title encompasses my hopes for this blog about as well as one can hope. Much like the show “Seinfeld” which is a show about nothing, this blog (at least as I imagine it now) will have no central idea. My singular goal for this blog is to write interesting, informative, and funny, posts about nothing (or everything). There are blogs about technology, interior design, fitness, etc. they have a central goal and uniting idea around which the blog forms its identity. This blog will not have that luxury. It will rely upon discussing topics that people are interested in (even if they don’t know they are interested in them yet). This blog will be very be done in a conversational tone, at times there will be pieces that I write in an editorial manner but I will always try to keep it conversational . If there was one thing I hated about writing assignments in college it was the inexplicable demand that required all papers to be written in a boring, dry, excruciating to read format. I will have none of those Shenanigans here.

The score stands with past blogs 2 and me the blogger with 0. Will it become 3-0 or will I come back in spectacular fashion? There is no time to dwell on it, I've got a blog to write! And my first post will be on…Ohh no I’m writing a blog about nothing…What will my first post be on?...
