For many years after I was shot, people would say to me, “You ought to write a book!” And for many years I said, “Are you crazy? It was bad enough going through it, I certainly don’t want to relive it!” Then, 3 years ago, I had a conversation with my son that changed everything. He stated, quite matter-of-factly, that his father was a sociopath. I initially denied it, and thought that all sociopaths were all cold blooded, calculating murderers. It disturbed me so much that my son would say this, and so, late that night, after he went home, I typed the word “sociopath” into the computer. As I sat there and read the description of the traits that a typical sociopath has, the blood drained from my face and I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. This was the answer to the maddening questions that I had had for over 20 years——what the hell was the matter with my husband? Why doesn’t he ever “get it” or “grow up?” “Why does he single-handedly destroy everything that is good in his life?”

And there was my answer. It was in front of me the whole time, but I just didn’t understand what a sociopath was. Suddenly, I had a reason to tell my story. So that maybe somebody else who is going through one of these maddening relationships would recognize and relate to it. So that they would understand that you can’t “help”, or “fix,” a person like this and that all they will do is drag you down with them. The only way to deal with a sociopath is not to deal with them at all.

And so, a book is born! “Getting it Through My Thick Skull”, which I am proud to say has become a New York Times best seller, is the story of what I went through and what I learned from my experience.

Sticky Notes from God

Good Monday Morning everyone,

No I have not disappeared although one might think so. I can regularly be found on Facebook as it has become my all around everything to stay connected lately. I haven't the time to hit all the different forums and blogs I love so much like this one. Life has turned up the heat several notches!

It's been a while since I have posted here, on my carleysense blog or my creative chaos blog, but I do get to work on fbook in the early morning almost daily. Smokey and Mom are okay, but both have had some major health issues we have had to overcome. Business picked up for me as I went back to regular painting. On the project I am on now I have found that my body may be telling me to stop pushing it so much. I have had several small art projects and big news, I start school May 7th! Yes I am going to go back to school! Art therapy is my interest.

It seems to be a good fit for me. My two great passions are art and helping people so you can imagine how excited I was after my lengthy research lead me to this conclusion. Just what I need, to add another layer of stuff to do daily, but I do feel lead to do this one. God will work out all the details. He always does.

I know you noticed the title of this post. Sticky notes for God. Well I have this idea some time ago. Those of you that know me know I am an idea looking for a place to explode! They are always coming and I have no outlet! Anyway, we decided, (God telling me I have the time), to put these little quick notes together for everyone's encouragement. They have always worked for me. So now I pass them to you. Yes, I will do my best to post daily, on fbook and on my carleysense blog. I will also try to bring them here, but if you don't see me here, please stop by my page and carleysense to be encouraged and share with your friends too!
