Guest Strip by Max Gibbons

This week we have a guest strip by Max Gibbons! Max has been doing other marine mammal drawings for a project called Esoteric Whale. Cartoon whales (mostly) appear on a rough, emotional background, captioned with out-of-context promises, platitudes, and admonishments. It is sort of like Jenny Holzer meets Weeping Gorilla. The whales speak directly to us most of the time, and though we don’t know what it’s talking about, the thick colors in the background give a heft that lets us know the whale is quite serious. Comments that would normally breeze past are solidified, forcing us to listen and say, Whale, I did not ask for your drama but I wish you luck. Chin up.

I’m going to be at SPX next weekend at Table B5. If you stop by, you may be the first on your block to get your hands on the new Herman minicomic! And the second collection has even newer strips than the first one! Both volumes will be available, plus Shrinky Dinks, plus an assortment of other quality comics. And me - I will be available to smile shyly and make awkward conversation. It is a remarkable opportunity that only comes about once a year (in Maryland).
