We talked about the length of time spankings take.

Jack: I have no say in how long the spanking is. My wife/mommy does not even know how long the spanking is. It depends on what I did and how I react while being spanked.

Wendel: There are times I will set the timer for 5 plus minutes when I give the Misses a hand spanking. Once it starts it does not stop. She squirms a lot and will have tears in her eyes but It does not end until the timer goes off and every inch of her bottom is bright red.
The Misses can drag a paddling out for a long time if I am bent over the end of the bed. She will give me a dozen whacks and then go do something else in the room. It can be several minutes before I get more whacks. The wait is exhilarating. Just as I get over the sting and pain she returns and beats my bottom some more. This can go on for 30 minutes or more and I cannot get up until she says so.

Rosco: On average, I get 3 spankings 20 or 30 minutes apart - each with maybe 20 whacks lasting 3 minutes or so. Just a guess, I’ve never counted or timed it. Often I’m tied up.

Norse Cavalier: The longest spanking I've ever given was three hours - not very hard, mostly hand, some paddle. Quite enjoyable for us both. Most spankings last about an hour, I think, but that's mostly fun spankings; punishment spankings are shorter and a lot harder.

Luvinhub: I don't believe my wife ever timed my spankings but I would guess around 30 minutes. In the moment it was usually long enough but in reality I believe she should have spanked me much longer.

Prefectdt: My spankings usually last between an hour and an hour and a half. Sometimes half an hour. An hour and a bit is often ideal, as I do like a certain level of severity and longer spankings would be hard to bear. I have been spanked for longer periods, but there are typically long breaks during the time of this type of play, it is not continuous.

KDPierre: Oddly, Rosa and I don't go by time but rather number, with a target number sort of decreed with the understanding that number might be exceeded a bit or perhaps, though less frequently, lessened as the spanking progresses.

High numbers are not unusual here, (1000+) and often very high numbers are divided up into a series of more manageable instalments, which can be a mixed blessing and curse. The more typical spankings are in the "quick 50" to solid 250-300 range.

Bonnie: Duration is Randy’s decision and he’s all over the map. Time is just one factor in deciding the severity of a spanking. Just a minute or two with a wooden bath brush at top speed and full intensity is far more painful, both during and after, than a steady 30 minute spanking with the leather paddle.

While I don’t get a choice, I do have preferences and they vary over time as well. Sometimes, I just want to take my position and get it over. In other cases, I like the detailed choreography, the build up, and the slow reveal of an inescapable punishment.

As for the longest spanking I’ve received, that depends upon one’s definition of a spanking. He has spanked me several times during a day where each session began where the last one left off (I totally deserved it). It seemed like one spanking to me and if you accept that premise, I guess my longest could span seven or eight hours.

A.J.: Obviously, I'm an amateur here, but I go by color, not time. When she's a nice pink I stop and proceed with the TLC+. When it's me on the receiving end I'm pretty sure it's the same.

In general it's about time time it take to deliver about (guessing) 250-300 hand spanks.
At top speed (where it hurts a bit more) 300 = 2 1/2 minutes.
At sensual speed 300 = 5 minutes + pauses for TLC.
At "Ain't this fun?" speed = 30 minutes?

Dan: I think length does matter, and there are times that, when a spanking is done, I feel like it wasn't quite long enough to leave me feeling like the issue that earned me the trip over her lap was fully dealt with. But numbness puts a hard limit on most of my spankings. Somewhere around 5 - 6 minutes, my butt starts going numb and, after that, continuing to spank seems pointless. I have come to appreciate, however, the role longer spankings play in leaving soreness that lasts for days. Five to six minutes is probably our average, but the time element is probably less relevant than the number of swats Most of my spankings are with a combination of the bath brush and a heavy ebony hairbrush, with a heavy emphasis on the bath brush. The typical number of swats/strikes per session are around 200 - 300.

Graham: Best guess is usually 45 minutes or more, but obviously not continuously.

Roz: It does vary quite a bit depending on the circumstances, mood etc. I would say on average 20 minutes.

Hermione: Ron aims for a finish time, so length of time doesn't enter into it for him. He watches the clock, and when it reaches the three quarter hour, he stops. The spanking might start on the half hour, or five minutes later, but it doesn't matter. He stops at 4:45 pm.

Like Dan, I get numb after about five minutes, so long spankings don't do anything for me.

We talked about spanking for punishment. Was there a time when you should have been spanked, but weren't?

Rosco: When Irene is truly annoyed with me, she ignores me. I don’t think it’s intentional punishment, but it feels that way.

Spankings are generally for imaginary infractions like being distracted by schoolgirls or maybe not doing my homework (ageplay, they call it). Occasionally she’ll threaten a spanking for not doing something around the house, but I don’t think it ever happens.

I fantasize about real discipline, but I don’t think I’m interested.

Roz: There have been a few occasions when I thought a spanking was forthcoming but it didn't happen.

Jack: If I think I will not be spanked and got away with it, I know I'm kidding myself. My wife/mommy has told me she needs to 'cool' off and just calm down.

KDPierre: I think this happens to just about everyone (in a disciplinary relationship) over time. It's just how life works. Things pop up, get in the way, and then the moment is lost and you either try to revisit it another time or just move on. Living this type of lifestyle is complicated, especially over the long haul, so I think it's best to focus on the positives and let go of the occasional, and inevitable, "what could have beens".

Prefectdt: The problem is for me that, although I pretend to see spankings as punishment, really I see them as a reward. So yes, there have been lots of times when I have achieved hard to do or difficult things, when I feel that I have truly earned a “well done” spanking, but there is no one around to give me one. Just life, I suppose.

Barrel: We don't really use spanking as punishment, although our sessions do take on a stern and reprimanding tone. There have definitely been times when I deserved discipline and didn't get it right away. We tend to work things out but remember to reinforce the outcome at the end of her cane when we schedule a session.

TTWD: My experience is similar to KDPierre's. Many (most) of my spankings are disciplinary, but sometimes we just continue doing what we are doing, and by the next day, although I might remember why (or not), Cindy has forgotten. Cindy's spankings have become really effective and strong, similar to what you used to describe for your spankings. At that time, Cindy felt they were too strong, but if she would read them now, she would realize they are the appropriate level needed, and what she gives me, or ours are even stronger.

Graham: Absolutely! But not everything in life is perfect. And spankings are hardly the only important thing in our lives.

Bonnie: Yes, definitely. But I usually get that spanking eventually.

What can you tell us about self-spanking? This proved to be a popular topic and we have several new friends who joined us this week.

MrBill: I self spank, flagellate, etc. frequently. I just don't get enough from my wife despite my requests and encouragement over the years. I don't masturbate anymore, but when she is away I whip, flog, cane myself. Sometimes bent over on the butt, sometimes inner thighs. Usually with implements including leather strap, belt, flogger, crop, cane, wooden paddle.

Rosco: Yes. For me it was underwhelming. I tried a riding crop. Yes I was by myself.

Wendel: Spanking for us is all about fun and intimacy. Without someone to be part of the experience a spanking is not satisfying.
We put a couple of spins on it by self-spanking when the other was present. For the first we each took turns while the other stood outside the bedroom listening. The second was self-spanking while the other was in the room. I did enjoy watching her whack her bottom and being critiqued by the Misses was a turn on. If a good enough job was not done then a proper spanking followed which happened to be every time.

Prefectdt: Yes I have self-spanked a lot, although I do not get much joy out of it. There can be a long break between spankings and self-spanking helps to keep my butt in order and helps me to keep a decent pain tolerance; it is not done for fun.

I have used plenty of things to self-spank, but the best seems to be a 2 foot (60 cm), peeled, German style rattan cane. By learning to use a flick of the wrist, rather than an arm swing, you can get a respectably stinging stroke. Also, it is not too noisy, so the radio does not need turning up too loud. Usually I am leaning forward over my dining table, supporting myself with my left hand, when this happens.

For a mentally satisfying self-spank, a medical EMS/TENS unit is often attached to my buttocks and set on a half hour pre-program, with the strength of pulse set way too high for normal medical use. This is not as good as a real spanking, but it does help me keep in mental trim, when real spankings are thin on the ground. I can just lie on my front on the bed and mentally absorb the pain, without having to do something myself, as the procedure is endured.

A.J.: Have you ever tried self-spanking?

Rosco: I’d love to cry from spanking, but it’s never happened. (I do cry on emotional occasions more than most people.)

Like others, I’ve had a few super hard or errant blows that were over the top. The intense bliss of ongoing seemingly endless hard spanks puts me in a zone like nothing else.

Bonnie: There are marks and then there are marks. I always have some residual redness on my bottom after I receive a proper spanking, but it often dissipates fairly quickly. There are some spankings, though, where Randy’s combination of implement, technique, and duration leaves me owning a more lasting set of marks.

I love my marks and the accompanying ouch back there whenever I sit, stand, walk, or bend. They remind me that I was recently punished, and to a certain degree, that the corporal punishment is still ongoing. These are exciting notions for me. Inspecting my visible marks in a mirror afterward makes the whole experience real.

Anon: My ex was surprised by marks the first time I spanked her, despite it being just surface marks and a few handprints. She got used to it.

Roz: I used to love having marks and being able to feel the spanking after. A lasting reminder. Rick also used to enjoy seeing the evidence of his handiwork. In the early days we were surprised at the amount of marking on a couple of occasions.

Rosco: Irene likes to tease me about them. She’ll say I deserved them and more. That she hopes I learned my lesson, but she suspects I haven’t.

The most visible marks occur when she uses a switch - tiny welts that sting like crazy when they’re administered but satisfy like cold lemonade on a hot day.

There have been a few errant blows over the years which have caused Irene a bit of remorse, but I’ve always healed in a couple of days.

Prefectdt: I don't mark much now. Sometimes welts from a very hard caning, but that is more that you can see a furrow along my bottom, with no or not much bruising. I did start bruising again, some years ago, when I started taking a medication for my sticky blood syndrome, but that stopped happening about 18 months after starting the medication. I did used to like looking at my marks for a few days after the spanking, and miss that a lot. Still, there is usually swelling of the buttocks now and that is nice to feel for 3 or 4 days after the spanking, but it is not as good as having proper marks.

Red: Cindy is very happy to see my bottom a bright red, but not happy if any bruising or bad marks. However, a nice grey surrounded by red on my bottom shows a rather very intense and deserved spanking. I like to take pictures of my bottom when it is quite red, but the lighting does not show the deep red. Wonder why on an Iphone. I blogged recently also, but need to re-learn everything, like how to put links to blogs I am starting to re-follow.

Does the spankee say "thank you"?

Graham: Absolutely! I not only thank her verbally, but she almost always receives a well-deserved oral orgasm usually followed by penetrative sex. Lots of fun!

FL: Often, sometimes immediately following as part of roleplay, sometimes a while afterward, thanking her for enthusiastically indulging me. It's just good manners.

Jack: When my wife/mommy is done with the spanking I must say I will be a good little boy Mommy and sorry for being naughty.

Rosco: I’ll often apologize for the behavior that led up to the spanking - that I’m sorry for being such a recalcitrant naughty disrespectful pouty boy and that I need to learn to follow all her rules. Then I might thank her for spanking me because I know I needed it.

She’ll agree and usually say she needs to spank me more often.

A few times Irene has demanded that I thank her as she’s spanking me. I’ll refuse at first just to be a little annoying then comply.

Barrel: Yes, I do thank my wife after any spanking. After a long session, when I am totally drained, I give her a deep hug and thank her for taking me into that realm where I feel a total release of any stress. I absolutely love those moments.

Sting or thud? It was no contest.

Bonnie: Ideally, I prefer a spanking that provides a bit of each. A moderate size wooden paddle, not too thick, dispenses both sets of sensations when applied firmly. Each immediate strike delivers a sharp shock to my exposed skin. This is how corporal punishment feels.

After my spanking is over, the burning sensation is gradually subsumed by a deep ache that I had not fully appreciated previously. This throbbing sort of pain is also part of the experience of getting a serious paddling. It serves as a relentless reminder, every time I stand, sit, walk, or bend.

If I got to choose, and I don't, I would want both sting and thud.

Roz: I think I would prefer a bit of both too. The more stingy spankings can be very intense in the moment and the more thuddy implements leave more of a reminder which I love.

Prefectdt: Following on with the general vibe, so far, in this subject. It is nice to have a mix of both, delivered by several, different implements. There are so many more stingy than thuddy toys in the world that it is hard to get a perfect balance between the two.

Ronnie: A mix of both. I love (and hate) the sting of a cane but a thuddy implement like the paddle does leave a lovely reminder.

Graham: Another vote for a mix, but I do love the sting of the cane!

Rosco: Such a complicated question.

The riding crop, the whip and the switch are generally stingy. They’re all delicious, and can be used on areas other than the sweet spot of the buttocks albeit generally with less force. Also, the impact of a whip, for example, catching a bit of the tailbone is not ideal but generally tolerable and won’t disturb the flow.

Paddles deliver a wonderfully satisfying resounding thwack, especially when delivered just right. They’re also easier to control - not that I have any experience doing so. Errant blows, however, result in pain - not the good kind.

I’ve bought numerous implements over the years the years, mostly some sort of lever and recently with comfortable round handles to fit nicely in Irene’s hands. These days, I usually get both the two tailed leather strap and either the leather ping pong paddle or the harsher wooden paddle. My face is down and I’m often blindfolded so I don’t know what’s coming until I feel than sting or thwack (don’t much like “thud”).

The after effects of the paddle do tend to last longer.

Variety is the spice of life.

Wendel: Like everyone we like both.

Hermione: I'll have to be the lone dissenter here. I much prefer thuddy implements. When Ron gets out the stingy wooden shoehorn I cringe. What has been your experience with restraints?

Another question revealing how damn boring I must be.

Wendel: The Misses bought some arm and leg restraints long ago. We each took a turn tying down the other and administering a whipping. It was ok but not our thing. The restraints have been in the closet ever since.

Rosco: Yes. I can’t remember when we started. Unlike spanking, I didn’t have any interest before we did it, but I love it.

That said, it’s tricky. I like to be firmly bound (helpless and vulnerable), but comfortable at the same time. And at times, Irene, wonderful dominant that she is, can be somewhat incompetent in her knot tying.

A few days ago, Irene instructed me to set up the massage table and lie face down. She bound me with yoga straps, including one over my tailbone which kept my bottom in place. Barrel: Yes, we do use restraints. I was wondering if we were crazy, but from the comments so far, I think we are quite sane.

Restraints are always used when we have a session, as the intensity and duration are longer and harder. Certainly the aura is heightened, but our sessions include extended caning with three canes, single tail whipping and an extra heavy tawse.

We use two positions in a session, the first being restrained to a retractable hoist in our garage we normally use for hanging bikes and garden hoses...but it works well as a rack too. I am not hung but stretched enough to prevent movement when she wields the single tail on my back and other implement on my buttocks.

The second is a bench, with convenient restraint points to use Velcro straps to not only bind my extremities but also open my inner thighs just below the crease in my buttocks. This providing unlimited access with her tawse to the most sensitive skin. I wear a protective cup for obvious reasons, but a properly applied tawse stroke can exceed the most intense cane stroke, making the restraints invaluable.

The resulting bonding we both get from these is exceeded only by the intimacy that follows.

Loki_Darksong: My use of restraints does depend on the play session at hand, usually for both practical and artistic reasons.

The practical is that the restraints make it easier for my play partner to not be concerned about staying in position on their own. The restraints allow them to focus on the play itself, especially if heavy implements are part of it.

Artistic wise is pretty much self-explanatory. People do look good tied up in various positions both in drawing and in photography.

On a side note, for the times when I bottom I do like the use of restraints on me in scenes involving caning and/or floggings. I can't put into words at the moment but being restrained during those types of scene is a big help for me in my mind since I do believe in if you're going to play you should know that you had been for at least a couple days afterwards. And that only works on me if I am restrained.

Roz: We did use restraints occasionally years ago. Mostly soft restraints such as scarfs etc and had a set of novelty cuffs. Also blindfolds. It all definitely added to the experience.

Hermione: We have a set of silver-coloured plastic cuffs that sometimes come into play. When we last bought a new bed, I chose a headboard that allowed for "attachments".

Let's discuss lasting effects from a spanking.

Rosco: I’m usually given three or four spankings over the course of an hour or so - each maybe twenty swats with a paddle, leather strap or whip. During this time I descend into another world where little else exists other than my discipline and my disciplinarian. After I’ve been punished sufficiently, sexual activity ensues.

After catching our breath, we’ll usually have dinner. My bottom will be tender, but it’s 24 hours later that it will often be hard to sit.

We don’t use a switch often, but when we do the welts will last a few days and taken a shower brings a delicious reminder. I should go look for a good switch.

Cleveland_Tom: I was never in a relation where I got a lot of daily spankings. Closest was the time is one I've shared where we had a spanko group party at our "friendly neighborhood dungeon." Roz: For us there has always been quite a gap between spankings so I always used to love any lasting marks/redness and discomfort as a reminder.

Prefectdt: The two short-term effects I get from spanking are usually a high on the day, and what I still call a crash, but what most people describe as sub drop for most of the time the day after a spanking. More long term comes a period that can be from 5 to 9 days after the spanking, when physically I can still have swelling and discomfort from the spanking. Along with that comes an ability to think with surprising simplicity and clarity. This is when I can best think through problems in my life and decide on the best actions to take. In the longest term, I feel more balanced, mentally, to get on with my life, if I am getting spankings at least on a semiregular basis, rather than the imbalance that I suffer from when going through long periods without spanking.

Jack: Spankings in this home last for sometime, meaning after the spanking is over. My wife/mommy uses a bath brush when as she states been a naughty little boy. Some spankings might be short, but the after affect is the same as the longer ones.

Dan: Physically, the lasting effects have diminished a lot over the years. In earlier days, I would often get bruising and marking that would last for several days. Now, I get a lot of discoloration that probably qualifies as bruising, but it's not very visible.

Emotionally, it depends a lot on what the spanking was for and all the circumstances around it. Often, when it's over, it's over, without a lot of lasting feelings about it. Other times, especially if the spanking happens in the middle of the day, I'm left with an increased sense of awareness about the fact that I just got spanked and underlying reason for it.

Barrel: Most of our regular spankings are a prelude to intimacy. But that doesn't mean that there are not some effects. My wife likes to use a hair brush with a back that is like a really heavy corduroy texture. When she spanks hard with that brush, I get thin, long blood blisters that will last 4 or 5 days. She also has a heavy, hard plastic paddle that will impart some good welts. Even when she uses her favorite strap or riding crop, the welts and marks fade within a day or two.
I always feel a sense of stress relief where any tension has been cleansed away. With a heavier session, the endorphin rush is unmistakable.

Hermione: Because we have been spanking for many years, I don't have many physical after effects. I a session goes on for a longer time, my bottom stays red for a day or two. Since spanking is always followed by intimacy, I often become aroused again after a few hours, thinking of the spanking that we engaged in.

Luvinhub: I have in the past thought about having someone else spank me. Prefectdt: I do not really have a regular partner, but I do fantasize a lot about getting spanked by strong-willed, female characters that I see on TV or in the movies. So many, that if I told you about them all, this comment would be as long as a book. There have been a lot over the years. I’ve constructed conversations like this oodles of times, tweaking them occasionally as time passes. They almost all start with a real encounter with someone I knew but never had any real interaction with.

I’ll add a couple of more fantasies and imagined conversations. I delivered a successful spanking to an eager recipient at a young age (I was more interested in receiving than giving but it’s easier to initiate than to ask). What has been your experience with bratting?

KDPierre: We always felt that manipulative bratting or intentional provocation was simply the worst thing a sub could do if engaged in a DD relationship, which we have. DD is tricky enough without the mixed signals that sends off. Instead, we just recognized that sometimes a sub just wants to be spanked, and we have ways of conveying it without bratting.

Now, all that said, if we're just playing around, and being silly, and "fun" spanking threats are already flying around, does some playful bratting occur? Absolutely! It's cute and funny. But it has to fall within a very well understood setting. Fortunately, we are able to navigate those two different worlds pretty easily.

Prefectdt: I love to Brat during a spanking play time, in order to get more or more severe whups. But I will only Brat, physically or verbally, with the permission and pre-negotiations about my actions. Bratting is a lot like spanking itself, it is only fun if all of the participating parties are consenting.

Barrel: I don't intentionally brat, I exhibit enough attitudes and behaviors that justify a spanking and occasionally a session. Our problem is that she doesn't connect poor behavior frequently enough to call for a spanking. Usually, as is the case now, I have to let her know I think we need a session. We work to find times that work, and start the build up, which involves discussion on being a jerk. This guides her into the right mindset to really thrash me.

Rosco: Yes, but only in a fun way. Sometimes I peek at Irene through the keyhole when she’s dressing for example. Sometimes I touch her when I’m not supposed to ( but never when it’s totally unwelcome).

Roz: I have bratted and teased in play which often, but it not always resulted in a spanking. I have also bratted once or twice outside of play which brought mixed results. Thinking back now I think doing so mostly just leads to confusion for both parties.

Wendel: We are not looking for submission or discipline. Spankings for us are meant to be fun. Obviously we will do things that provoke a sore bottom. The Misses will be bad and say things like “I was naughty” or “I guess I deserve a spanking”. Her favorite thing to do is spill or spray water on me. The whipping that follows really turns her on.

FL: Only in the context of playing, never out of the blue during "normal life".

Graham: Only when it is clearly in fun, as several have described above. Enough unintentional things occur that lead to spankings, and I can always as for a stress relief spanking.

Hermione: As others have said, only in fun. Spankings occur when Ron decides, and nothing I say or do alters that.
