How can hernia surgery be joyous?

I get these questions quite often. But adversity often strengthens a person and his or her relationship with family and loved ones.

Trials help a person to grow and mature. I learnt through my hernia problems how to cherish those around me. I learnt how much I had taken life and its comforts for granted.

But life is frail and when you experience the trauma of a medical condition, it becomes very real to you. You learn who your real friends are and just how far those who love you will sacrifice themselves for you.

It was a period of reckoning. It was a period of awakening. Seeing my loved ones sacrifice themselves for me and feeling so helpless, it made me even more determined to overcome the pain and come through unscathed.

JOY – yes, I felt joy like no other when the doctors finally told me I had recovered after my hernia surgery. Joy that my loved ones would no longer need to slog to pay the bills and take care of me. Joy that I could finally start to repay them for their unconditional love for me.

So if you ever have any such condition, hernia or otherwise, take it as an experience in growing as a person and find the JOY within!

The road to recovery may be rocky at the start but perseverance and belief are really the keys to a full recovery.

After my hernia surgery, it was excruciating pain just to pull myself up from bed. And not to mention walking. Taking painkillers helped but only a little. But my family was there for me. And I would walk and sit, then walk and sit again.

Try to take things slow at the start. Don’t expect things to be back to normal immediately after the hernia treatment. There will be a little inconvenience but bear with it and it will soon be over. Don’t over exert and have lots of rest and a good diet during the recovery period.

After a couple of weeks, I was back up and much better as the wound had healed completely and I was able to resume a normal lifestyle. I’m glad I kept up the belief and persevered, all with the help and support of my friends and family. So you can do it too!

Instead of dwelling on the negatives or fears of hernia surgery, why not see it in a positive light?

Many people are afraid of the after-effects of the surgery, such as the pain and discomfort, or the inability to lead a normal life (at least for a period of time after the surgery). And many are also fearful of the long and ugly scars that hernia surgery might leave them with.

But why focus on the negatives all the time. Why not think of all the benefits? After the surgery, most people will see a complete recovery. Thus, the problem is solved. Any discomfort or inconvenience is also temporary.

As for the scars after the hernia treatment, why not see them as works of art – sexy scars which are testimony of your courage in going through with the operation. Some people even work tatoos around them.

While not as momentus as battle scars, these hernia scars will always remind us not to take life for granted, to treasure those around us, to always be positive and believe in ourselves.

So be proud of those super sexy hernia surgery scars!

Hernia Surgery is no rocket science but it does require professional medical care. A general physician will not be able to make a very accurate diagnosis and they would usually refer patients to a specialist.

There are several specialist centers for hernia treatment around the world. One of them I have visited is the North Penn Hernia Institute in Pennsylvania, USA, where they specialize in the contemporary repair of abdominal wall hernias.

The personalized attention of the staff at this center is what made the experience so reassuring and not fearful. This makes a great difference to the proper and speedy recovery of any patient.

Wherever you may be, take your time to locate a specialist center which provides great medical service and after-surgery care. There may be a price to pay for the better medical treatment but this is a price which is definitely worthwhile and will make the experience less stressful and scary for the patient.

Any form of surgery has its risks. And hernia surgeries are no different. Thus, a good doctor or surgeon is critical to the success of the operation. A good doctor will always explain all the risks and possible outcomes of the surgery and any important things to take note of. It should be crystal clear what you can expect from the hernia surgery. Medical jargons should be kept to a minimum and explained fully if used. If in doubt, you should ask the doctor. Don’t wait till the surgery is over to clarify your doubts to avoid any misgivings.

Remember that nothing is guaranteed and no doctor can say that the surgery will go 100% smoothly. So be mentally prepared to face any of the outcomes possible. Usually, hernia surgeries are not major so at worst, you might have a recurrence of the hernia or infection setting in. Nonetheless, always take your time in recuperating and ensure you recover fully before you start your normal activities again.

It seemed like an eternity. Life ebbed from my body as I was wheeled to the operation room. It started off 6 months with a sudden pain in my groin area. I never thought much about it. But the pain was recurring and finally, I consulted a doctor. He immediately referred me to a specialist to take a closer look. We often don’t realize how important it is to get a good doctor. But thrust into the position, I recall the immense significance of it all.

The first specialist just brushed it off, instead asking me to just monitor the situation and come back for another appointment if the pain came back. Not contented, I did a search online and read many blogs and articles and figured that it might be a hernia. I identified a good hernia surgery doctor from the web reviews and personal sharings of others. This was really helpful and I went ot consult this new specialist. after a thorough check, the specialist told me it was hernia and that I needed hernia surgery.

He swiftly arranged for me to have the operation as complications might result in a serious consequences, even to the point of death. Throughout the consultations, he kept reassuring me of the high success rate of such operations. The words of reassurance were critical to my continued optimism.

On the day of the operation, I was in a state of panic. I have a certain fear of hospitals and operating wards stemming from my childhood and the bad memories were coming back. Here I was, a grown man, but shivering like a little boy as I watched the doctors and nurses hurriedly preparing for the surgery. My family was keen to be there to give me support but I had stubbornly refused to let them come. I didn’t want them to see me so petrified.

Finally, after what seemed like a lifetime of waiting, they wheeled me towards the operating theater. With fear growing and a strange aura of death encompassing me, I muttered a quick prayer. Then, as if in reply, I felt a warm hand grab mine. The warmth of the hand seemed to power strength into me. My eyes looked up and there was my specialist doctor. He had taken time off to come to see me and give his well-wishes before the surgery. Fighting back tears, I thanked him. “Be strong, it will be alright. I promise,” he said. The words were like an injection of faith into me. I knew at that point that it was not as scary as I thought it would be. Indeed, I didn’t feel a thing until the surgery was over.

When I next opend my eyes, it was all over. I was back in the ward. As with any surgery, there would be a measure of discomfort and inconvenience. I had a little trouble getting up and walking as the cut was near my groin area but after a few weeks, everything was back to normal.

The experience taught me the importance of finding the right doctor for your hernia treatment, the need to stay positive and the importance of support.

So don’t worry. It will be alright! Just believe!

Hernia surgery may sound scary but the experience was actually quite mild.

I was diagnosed with inguinal hernia in the groin area. It was not painful and I never realized it was there until a routine check-up.

Immediately I was put down for surgery. It was a day surgery and done in just a couple of hours. I did have to stay overnight at the hospital but just as a precautionary measure.

There was no pain during the surgery as I was under general anesthesia and wasn’t conscious during the surgery.

All in all, I maintained optimism throughout and the surgery was a success. So a lot will boil down to your personal strength of will, especially for more major surgeries. But keep your hopes up!

Symptoms of hernia could be protruding lumps in the body, with or without pain.

Treatment of hernia has advanced over the years. Hernia repair should usually be done swiftly in order to prevent complications such as organ dysfunction, gangrene or even death.

Most abdominal hernias can be surgically repaired and are not major. Recovery rarely requires long-term changes in lifestyle or long period of recuperation.

Uncomplicated hernias are usually repaired by “reducing” the herniated tissue and then fixing the weakness in the muscle tissue (surgery called herniorrhaphy). Modern surgery could involved insertion of a mesh to strengthen the tissue. Staples may be used to keep the mesh in place and these can be removed from the patient later when the wound has healed. Alternatively, some repairs are performed through laparoscopes.

In laparoscopic surgery, one or more small incisions are made for the camera and instruments to be inserted instead of the surgeon’s bare hands.

Patients can usually return to normal duties or school/work within a week or two, but physical activities may be limited for a longer period of time. Complications are rare, but infections, hernia recurrence etc are possible.

A hernia is the protrusion or penetration of an organ through the wall of a cavity that normally contains it. Hernia is Latin for protrusion.

A hiatal hernia occurs when there is a protrusion upwards from the stomach into the mediastinum through the esophageal opening in the diaphragm.

One of the most common herniae develops in the abdomen, when a weakness in the abdominal wall evolves into a “hole”, through which tissue or abdominal organs may protrude. An example is an inguinal hernia (see picture below).

Herniae shows itself through a visible lump. There may or may not be pain at the site.

There may be certain symptoms resulting from pressure on an organ which has become “lodged” in the hernia, sometimes leading to organ fungi. Fatty tissue may enter a hernia followed by a kidney.

Surgery may be required to repair a hernia and in some cases, this must be done swiftly, especially if there is pain.
