East Coast Comic Expo

A little less than a month ago, we were contacted by several hotnorthians from New Brunswick informing us of a new comicon in the area, the East Coast Comic Expo. It was going to be their first year altogether. Who says first time usually says problems but this year our focus was the East Coast and we had decided we would try to do as many events in the East as possible. So the fans wanted us there (at least 15 of them), it fitted the travel plans for this year and it sounded like fun to be part of a first time ever Con!

So it was with great excitement that we headed down the 20 towards Moncton New Brunswick last week to be part of the Moncton adventure! And what a thrill it was! This convention was so well organized that it put to shame several much bigger events we attended. Even though it was only one day, it was quite busy and it helped generate sufficient revenues to cover all of our travel expenses. Kudos to all the organizers and a special mention to Georgio for throwing such a nice party afterwards!

INTRODUCING MANTIS

We took the opportunity of the Ottawa Comicon to introduce one of our new villains of Season 2, the deadly Mantis, played by the lovely Marie Ty. Mantis is a Medusa agent that works closely with Hornet. She has ties to the Heroes of the North vigilante known as 8 Ball. In fact, the most astute of the Hotnorthians will have noticed that Marie Ty makes a brief appearance in Episode 3: 8 Ball Origins as Tony Falcon’s wife, Brownwyn, where she meets a gruesome fate at the hands of some random thugs, triggering the events that will lead Tony Falcon to become 8 Ball. You will have to watch closely Season 2 to find out the sinister secret behind it all. On a side note, Mantis stylish costume was designed by Andy Bradshaw and created by Marie-Claude Bourbonnais (Hornet herself!).

The Nathan Fillion Adventure

For Halloween 2012, Canadian actor Nathan Fillion disguised himself as his own version of a World War II Canadian superhero and tweeted several pictures in said costume. A fun yet innocuous gesture that resulted in us getting thousands of emails, tweets, DM and FB messages and comments as a lot of people thought he was doing his version of our Canadian Shield character. We even ended up doing a blog post about it. We seriously doubted he was aware of the show and we were convinced it was totally related but it was fun.

Flash Forward to May 2013 and Heroes of the North is headed to the second Edition of the Ottawa Comicon. And surprise, Nathan Fillion is the guest of honour this year. So we decided to go try to talk to Mr. Fillion and tell him the Halloween anecdote and how it affected us and our site traffic positively and we wante to give him a Canadian Shield comic book at the same time and tell him a little about the show.

When we got to him, at the signing booth, his first reaction was to react at the 8 Ball costume, ask Anderson Bradshaw to step back and using his phone, he flashed a picture or two. We got to tell him the anecdote and a little about the show and gave him a bunch of our comics. He was very enthusiastic and appeared delighted. “I did not know about this!”, he said.

We went back to our booth and the day proceeded briskly. Around 12:30, during lunch hour, as things quieted down, Anderson and Marie Ty decided to do what we call a flyer run: going to different booth and into the crowds, taking pictures and chatting with people and distributing the show’s flyer.

Cliff, one of the organizer of the Comicon, came by and said: “You will never guess who specifically requested to come by your booth!”. We had no idea. He said: “Our guest of honour, Nathan Fillion, asked to come visit you guys. He will be here between 12:40 and 1:15. Don’t tell anybody because we don’t want to create a commotion.”

We of course agreed. And started to run around and chase our missing flock. There was so much people, we did not manage to find them on time. Mr. Fillion arrived with his entourage, but we did not have the actors with us.

“Where is everybody?”, asked Mr. Fillion as he approached. “We are looking for them! We got warned of your visit after they had just left!”. He looked disappointed. “I will try to pass by again later!”, he said before being hustled away. As he disappeared around the corner, 8 Ball and Mantis arrived…

8 Ball and our producer ran in the direction they had disappeared but they lost them in the crowd. And we thought we had missed a great opportunity. But 8 Ball went to the signing area and managed to speak to the management. He came back with the following news: Mr. Fillion would meet us at 3 PM in the VIP area, backstage for a few minutes before his next appearance. Class act!

So about an half hour before three, we braved the crowd and headed down to the other end of the convention centre with everyone in tow, leaving only one man at the booth.

We got there a little faster than we thought, waited a little and then Mr. Fillion walked in, camera in hand, clicking away: “Look at you guys!” He took several pictures with our Heroes, Hornet, 8 Ball and Mantis, both with him and individually and then we took a couple of pictures as a group with him holding the Shield, which had started this whole thing in the first place.

So now the story is wrapped with a neat little bow. We wish to warmly thank Mr. Fillion for his time and generosity as well as everyone that made the encounter possible!

And that concludes our Nathan Fillion adventure!

Ottawa Comicon 2013

This is the first glimpse of Voda, our New Manitoban superhero, drawn by Geof Isherwood! Voda is one of the new characters that will be introduced in Season 2. An origin story detailing how she came to get involved with the WDO, what are her powers and so on, will be found in the trade paperback that will be out later this year and will set the stage for her implication in the Heroes of the North Universe.

PACIFICA: ROAD TRIP

We will be attending the Free Comic Book day at La Boîte à BD in Laval this year. They have a great initiative where they give, alongside the already free comics, a black and white comic that they get made themselves by asking various indie creators to contribute a few pages. Heroes of the North contributed to the initiative with a 2 pages Nordik story by Yann Brouillette & Christopher Yao. The comic is being handed out alongside the other comics from Free Comic book day! Looking forward to meet everyone and spend a good day filled with fun, comics, fans and friends!

NEW COMIC: BREAK AND RUN

Alan Draven, the Montreal author we picked to write the first Heroes of the North novel informed us that he recently completed the first draft of the action packed story late last week. And today, he even has a synopsis to share with all of us.

OCTOBER DAWN

The recently elected Prime Minister of Quebec is abducted from his home. All that’s left behind is an envelope marked “October Dawn.” The Canadian, Fleur-de-Lys, Black Terror, and 8 Ball are sent to investigate. Shortly after, the Premier’s daughter is kidnapped at their summer cottage in the Hamptons in New York. A strange masked woman wearing a costume with the emblem of Russia is involved. Who is she working for? To what end?

Before long, the city of Montreal is placed under a new form of the Emergencies Act. As the team of heroes digs deeper, they unveil a web of mysteries and deception that may threaten the future of the entire country. It’s up to Canada’s bravest heroes to save the day while there’s still time….

UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

As you most likely noticed, we are currently upgrading the site big time. Getting of old code still straggling around, improving and modernizing, simplifying and streamlining are the main goal of this update to prepare for the coming of Season 2 and all the new materials that we have been building in the past few months. That being said, it is never an easy undertaking and it often takes more time than you think so we are still at it. So we apologize for the 404 pages and other inconveniences. We are going as fast as we can to get every area of the site functional as fast as possible.

Here is what to expect from the new site:

- Easier navigation and less pages. All episodes are now viewable through a single click straight from the Episodes page.

- HTML 5 video. We got lots of complaints about the other player - now we are using YouTube, which is a web standard at this point so hopefully things run smoother from now on.

- More streamlined and focused content.

- Season 2 episodes and related comic books will be accessible through a paywall which we are currently in the process of setting up. We are sorry to no longer offer the show and comics for free but these things are expensive to put out and we want to be able to offer a better product, and a more timely delivery, so the show needs to be able to pay for itself. We offer three reasonably priced plans, which be reviewed in the Members section.

- We are dropping the French entirely from the site. We are sorry to have to do this but French traffic is only a very small portion of our global traffic and it requires almost as much efforts and to put it up as the rest - it just does not make logical sense, considering our limited resources.

The site should be more or less a challenge to navigate this week but after that, everything should be back to normal and we can slowly start to unleash the goodness of Season 2! Thank you for being part of the ride!

NANO: DAWN OF A NEW HERO

We are preparing for Season 2 and there is a whole range of new characters that will appear in that series. One of them is a University of Ontario physician that will become the superhero known as Nano. Here’s a look at the spiffy logo deigned by André St-Amour who also illustrated the first Nano introduction comic, which will be available as part of the Season One trade paperback. We cannot wait until you discover all the wonders we have cooked up for you, the fans!

Festival de la BD de Québec and Website updates

From the outside, it may look like not much is happening but in fact, quite a lot is. We are in the finishing stage of wrapping up everything related to Season One, including Episode 20, the Season Finale comic, the DVD, the 440 pages mammoth trade paperback of all the stories pertaining to Season One, prepping Season 2, and updating the site in a major fashion. So please be patient in the next week or so as we have a lot of broken links. Our goal is to make the site easier to navigate, more efficient yet still packing punch! Let us know how we are doing!

Also, on April 13 and 14, Yann and Michel Brouillette, co-authors of most of our comics and several of the show’s episodes, will be in Quebec City for the Festival de la BD de Québec. They will introduce a 60 pages, extremely limited edition Fleur-de-Lys comic which they will be on hand to sign on Sunday, April 14th from 12h00-13h00 (Dimanche 14 Avril de 12h00-13h00). Also present at the event will be Marie-Claude Bourbonnais (Hornet), who will be in charge of a cosplay event.

We are truly sorry that the updates have been few and far between. We are still a minuscule team and we are working quite hard behind the scene to soon present you with a brand new Heroes of the North. We have fallen late on several things, some due to problems with publishers, cash flows, just being too busy scraping off a living, but we have not abandoned the show or our fans. Episode 20 will be released extremely shortly, along with the 24 pager Season Finale. Publishing issues have prevented us from delivering Coda on time, but it is headed to the Publisher this week. Nordik and 8 Ball Figurines should be here in time for the Ottawa Comicon with a bit of luck. We are also hard at work finishing up the first Heroes of the North Novel: October Dawn, our first trade paperback, which is going to be a behemoth, at 440 pages! And of course planning the intricacies of Season 2. So stick around true believers, we have a lot more in store for you folks VERY soon!

Nathan Fillion as Canadian Shield?

We are getting a ton of traffic on our Canadian Shield comic and episodes from the United States for the last few days - and lots of Google search on Canadian Shield and it seems to be linked to the fact that Canadian actor Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) posted a picture of his Halloween costume a few days ago. That picture was also posted on our Facebook wall by a couple of our people in the know on this page already and everyone seems to think he was impersonating our character. We have no idea if it is the case, it seems doubtful because the look is quite different, and it is an easy parody anyways - heck, that is what we did too - but it is pretty funny nevertheless. The wonders of the interweb never cease… ;-) In any case, Mr. Fillion’s costume is all kinds of awesome!

Trouble is brewing in Montreal as Fleur-de-Lys fights Miss Canada right in the terminal!

Here is yet another sneak peek at the upcoming artwork for the last Heroes of the North Omnibus, CODA, coming out in December. In this story by Yann Brouillette, gorgeously penciled and inked by Patrick Hénaff, Fleur-de-Lys meets her match while trying to prevent a potential terrorist attack… At least, it is the official plot line. Since the story is told backwards, you will not find out until the end what it is all about… Prepare to be shocked...

The Canadian - Time Out

It features The Canadian trying to defuse what appears to be a bomb, from a story by Yann Brouillette called fittingly enough Time Out! No Son of Mine relates the trials and tribulations of Madame Doom, who expresses the desire to have an heir for her empire. She asks Medusa Commander to provide her with a test tube baby but the results fall short of her high expectations… This twelve page story by Yann Brouillette will be found in the third and last Omnibus of Seasone One, CODA, which is currently in solicitation through Diamond Distribution at your friendly local comic book store or can be pre-ordered straight from us in our store.

Season 2 Casting begins!

Casting has begun for Season 2 of Heroes of the North - episodes shooting will be spread out throughout the year. But we are starting this very weekend with a really fun bit of action set during the Vietnam War. Trying to escape the Viet Congs, a soldier and his pregnant wife are trying to cross the jungle in the hopes of reaching the borders of neighbouring Cambodia. We won’t tell you what happens next but let’s just say that the events of this episode will see the rise of two new villains, Black Mantis and Iron Panther, both of whom will bring many woes to 8 Ball down the road. The astute amongst you will remember Iron Panther being mentioned during the fight between Steel Tiger and 8 Ball in Episode 7… How is that for foreshadowing? We told you we had a plan all along!

In the meantime, we want to welcome the lovely Uni Park to the Heroes of the North family. She will play the mother of Black Mantis as Napalm and agent Orange will drop around her this very weekend...

Our cool as hell graphic designer, Tim Goernert, could not sleep last night after Black Terror nightmares and he has come up with a whole line of T-Shirt concepts... Here is the first one. Let us know what you think. If enough of you like them, we will make them. Now, we will have to think about moving Black Terror's pen away from Tim's bedroom. The cohabitation appears to be difficult... Then again, if it inspires him to do great work... Hmmmm.... Tough choices.

Montreal Comicon Concludes!

Montreal Comicon is over! What a rush the past three days have been! We had our biggest cast turnout yet and the fans were demanding more! We had a major blast at this year’s event. We want to thank all our fans who came by to say hi, take pictures and buy stuff! You are the reason why we make the show in the first place and your support is greatly appreciated. We also want to thank all our wonderful cast members that popped by over all the three days to meet the fans, take pictures and sign tons of things! Montreal Comicon Schedule Changes

Schedule changes for characters appearances at the Montreal Comicon and other related issues:

Black Terror: Friday and Saturday ONLY. No longer there on Sunday.

Medusa Commander: Sunday - 10 AM to 1 PM.

8 Ball: Friday - 2 PM to 9 PM, Saturday - 1 PM to 7 PM, Sunday - 1 PM to 5 PM

There is a strong possibility that the Masquerade appearance of Friday night may be cancelled - we did not get final confirmation - so for now we are assuming she is coming. We will update as soon as we find out.

All other characters schedules remains as advertised previously.

Despite our best efforts, the Nordik and 8 Ball figurines will not make it on time for the CON - but they should show up within the next 7 business days.

We made only 100 copies of the Comicon special Edition omnibus - they are already flying fast with a couple of dozen already reserved - come get yours early because we don't think there will be any left come Sunday...

We will not be able to do the live action shoot during the con as we could not get the proper authorizations in time... :-( We will make it up to you with a kick ass panel which will introduce Acadia live, before she appears in her episode (20)...

Two really neat articles came out this week!

First is an entertaining interview with Gibson Quarter (Bang Bang Theory, Prototype, Timeout) about his various projects, with a mention of his work on Heroes of the North and a quick glimpse at his pencils from Prototype. You can read all about it at Comic Book Daily.

There was also a really nifty article by Dave Michaels aka FPB over at Expert Comics. Dave came a few months ago to cover the shooting of elements of Episode 17, 19 and 20 as well as interview cast and crew members. He even did a little cameo in Episode 19 as the guy in a wheelchair that calls 911 and helped Masquerade. Dave gives us an heartfelt and in-depth exposé about his two days adventures on the set of Heroes of the North. It is a definitely intensely entertaining read that sheds some light on the backstage shenanigans of shooting a low budget web series. You can read all about it over at Expert Comics.

With the imminent release of our second Omnibus this September, it feels kind of weird to talk about the third Omnibus, Coda, already. But that one will be out later this fall, in December to be exact, so we are already hard at work on it. Featuring the stunning cover by Donald Caron as chosen by our Facebook fans - it will feature the 24 pages Season Finale by Olivier Raymond and Kellam Templeton, and written by Yann and Michel Brouillette, as well as 56 pages of NEVER BEFORE SEEN MATERIAL. That’s right - the bulk of the comic wll be brand new stories that will not be available online. So far we can tell you that the book will be featuring work by Gibson Quarter & Guillermo Ortego, who gave us the kinetic madness of the Black Terror/8 Ball team-up - you can see a sample of Gibson’s pencils above, new comer to the Heroes of the North fold Christopher Yao, who illustrates a sweet Nordik tale, Geof Isherwood who pencils a New Felquistes Halloween tale created by guest writer Jean-Dominique Leduc. It has been a long time coming but EPISODE 17: Past and Present, is finally online! It took a while to put together as it was a very long episode and we wanted to distillate it to the most important elements. It is also an important presentation piece for things to come in regards to Medusa Commander, our main villain, his view of the world and his plans. It also sets up important stuff for Season 2. So we wanted to do it right. The episodes stars Michel Brouillette as The Canadian Shied, Constantine Kourtidis as the Medusa Commander, Ross Neil as Baxter, Marie-Claude Bourbonnais as Hortense Netter, Anoutlith Sintaraphone as Steel Tiger ans Anderson Bradshaw, who reprises the role of his 8 Ball character’s grandfather, Falcon.

The Acadia comic is out! It is a nice little story about second chances, growing to be the person you want to be, and how fate sometimes changes our path. The story also features Hornet (Marie-Claude Bourbonnais) and introduces a new CDO character, Donovan Eastman. Season Finale Sneak Peek: The fate of the Canadian

You know we love our sneak peeks here at HOTN Central! And this one is pretty cool because it heralds the end of our comic book run for Season One. Currently titled Season Finale, it is just that: a story that wraps up most of the events of Season One in a 24 pages colour extravaganza penned by Yann & Michel Brouillette, penciled by Olivier Raymond (Fleur-de-Lys: Blooming), inked by Kellam Templeton and coloured by Aljoša Tomić. We can’t tell you much more than that because the story deals with so many aspects of the storyline of the first Season and we do not want to spoil your fun. But we can tell you this much: it is action packed, possibly the most action packed Heroes of the North comic yet! It will set the stage for Season 2. And it will feature most of our main villains and characters. And it is just so cool, we can’t wait for you guys to read it! ;-) While it should be available by August online, it will be also part of the third and last 80 pages Season One Heroes of the North omnibus, which should be out in November 2012 in your favourite comic book stores.

The Heroes of the North 80 pages behemoth, Omnibus volume 2, will hit the comic book stores everywhere in North America this fall - September to be precise. Yet, you should nag your favourite friendly comic book store this month (July) about it. Or, alternatively, if you live abroad or do not have a comic book store nearby, you can also pre-order it from our online store.

Why now? What is the rush?, do you ask? Because the way it works is as follows: The book is currently being solicited now in comic book stores all across America in a magazine/catalog called Previews and published by Diamond Comics - which is pretty much the sole distributor of comics in North America for the retailers.

Retailers ie your favourite comic book store, must collect their orders during that month and submit them at the end of it to Diamond, who will in turn, inform the publishers of the minimum amount of copies the publisher needs to make to fulfill the demand, in order for everyone to minimize their risks, especially on lesser known titles like ours.

Now here is the rub: comics are a tough business these days and most retailers are pretty conservative. They usually stick to what they know and that is why they are still in business. They do not want to get stuck with stuff that does not sell and so on. And no one can blame them for that. But if their clients ask for it, they will order it. Maybe a few more, because there is a demand. And that is good for us and the show, for many reasons. Keep reading to find out why...

For the first Omnibus, the book was under ordered by a lot of retailers - most stores had ran out of the books three weeks after its release! - and they had to order more the next month. Thankfully we over printed a bit for conventions and so on - and we were (barely) able to meet up the demand. Whatever we had left for conventions has been selling like hot cakes with the end result that we have almost none left! If you want to get your hands on it, you can always visit our store or perhaps we will have some at the next convention, but that is the extent of it: a few dozens left.

Now you may be thinking that we are making lots of money going through Diamond , with its extended distribution market that is so much wider than anything we could humanely cover on our own, but the truth is we are not: once you factor in the printing fees, Diamond’s own, huge distributor’s cut (60%!), our publisher’s share and other expenses like the fees of the artists and other contributors themselves, not to mention the cost of shipping at almost every steps, there is really not that much left, quite frankly. Not enough for a profit.

But going through Diamond allows us to get the book far and wide and spread the news of the shows to people we could never afford to reach otherwise. And that is why we do it and it is also why we ask you to order it from your retailers instead of through us, even though we technically lose money when you do it at this point.

As the books get more popular, get great reviews and so on, the show also gets more known and it helps on many fronts - people end up buying merchandise that is not available anywhere but in our store, they talk about the show to their friends and neighbours, they buy the next comic and so on… Allowing us to continue our growth.

And who knows, one day we might reach the critical mass in comics sales to an extent sufficient to make us a decent profit once all the people in the chain have taken their fees and all expenses are paid. We are not there yet but we are not that far off either. And with your help, we can definitely get there.

We want to do more comics and we want to keep going with the show. It is difficult but also a lot of fun and very rewarding on so many levels.

So, what can you expect in this new book, besides comics that are already on the site? As it turns out, a lot! In the first book, we only had one extra stories that appeared nowhere else. We have several more for this book. Here is a run down:

The book will feature five of the 12 pages book currently (or soon to be!) available on the site. They are:

- Nordik and 8 Ball Team-up: Chilling me softly, written by Yann Brouillette, with art by David J. Cutler, colours and lettering by Keiren Smith.

- 8 Ball and Black Terror team-up: The Bang Bang Theory, written by Yann Brouillette, with art by Gibson Quarter (with some inks by Guillermo Ortego), colours and lettering by Keiren Smith.

- The Archie style hilarious romp called Zombots being schooled, written by Yann Brouillette, with art and colours by Dan Parent and lettering by Zen.

- The tragedy packed Acadia: Pretty Clear, written by Yann and Michel Brouillette, with stunning art by Geof Isherwood, and colours and lettering by Keiren Smith.

And, last but not least, a superb story of the Canadian written by Canadian comic legend Ty Templeton, definitely the man for the job, illustrated by Daniel Wong. Those five 12 pages stories make up some two-third of the book’s sixty pages. There is twenty more to go. Here is the line up for those:

- A 12 pages, psychedelic and bat shit insane crazy Black Terror story called The Dark Alley, written by Yann Brouillette, illustrated by Zach Fisher, coloured by Aljoša Tomić and lettered by Zen. What happens in this one is so insane, we would not know where to start if we tried to explain it. So we won’t. An image should suffice:

- There is a fun little mystery three pages story called Blood Bath, featuring 8 Ball and Alpha Q, written by Yann Brouillette, illustrated by Geof Isherwood, coloured by Aljoša Tomić and lettered by Zen.

- A short but gorgeous Pacifica story called ASAP written by Yann Brouillette, with art by David Cutler, coloured by Aljoša Tomić and lettered by Zen.

- and we round up the book with a New Felquistes Halloween tale called October Crisis, written by Jean-Dominic Leduc and illustrated by Geof Isherwood.

With this line-up, we managed to feature every single characters featured on the gorgeous cover above, illustrated by Geof Isherwood. Every single one of our Heroes, and indirectly, our current main villains, made it in this 80 pages collection!

And you get all that Canadian superhero madness for six bucks! Canadian! We are not kidding, folks! As a reviewer said (about the first book): “Heroes of the North is the best bang for your buck right now in the comic book world!”. We may be biased, but we strongly agree with that! And we are bold enough to think we even topped it for the encore!

Happy Canada Day! New website and Comic Syndicate mention

First, we would like to wish a very happy Canada Day to all our fellow Canucks! We even got a little mention in the Comic Book Syndicate blog.

You may have also noticed yet another look to the site. We have been struggling for a while in order to update the site to a responsive version so that all the mobile phones and tablets fans can enjoy the site almost as well as the desktop folks. But trying to keep functionalities we need with a responsive site means lots of conflicts with scripts and so on. We have minimize the code as much as possible in this one in the hopes to minimize the issues that have been plaguing us for months. So far, so mostly good, except for the store which is still in disarray. We are working on it and hope to have it back working properly soon. Thank you all for your patience.

MAJOR UPDATE TIME - PART TWO: EPISODES

Here we come with part two of the update!

EPISODES: Three out of the four episodes left to release are for the most part edited - the sound needs to be done on them. Three of the last four episodes have a lot of special effects in them and it has taken longer than anticipated to finish those amidst all the other complicaitons. We are working hard on getting it done and at least two of them should be released very shortly.

DVD: The release of the DVD has been delayed because of the episodes. This is both a good and a bad thing - bad because we cannot send the DVD right away, good because we have more time to had more features to it.

DVD Launch: Several fans have asked us to make a public DVD launch with a screening of episodes. We are planning one in July. More details to come. But we will also make it an exposition of costumes, props, art and other HOTN related stuff.

Season 2: Several comics a quite a few episodes have been written for Season 2 with more on the way. We are currently starting writing a few more. We start shooting Season 2 in August and September of this year.

Secret Project: Those of you who remember a few posts in this blog about the secret project will be pleased to hear it is progressing well. We should have something to show you very soon! It is very exciting and the whole team is pumped with even the partial imagery we have at the moment.

Website: We are still working on the best solution to accommodate all possible platforms via flexible width. Not perfect but it seems to be the best direction to take. We are learning as we go, so bear with us. That is also a big reason we are behind.

Internet Explorer: We officially no longer support this piece of crap browser. It is not standard and causes all kinds of conflicts and problems. Until Windows gets its act together, we strongly suggest you use one of the many, free browsers out there made by people who actually use the internet. Suggestions: Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera. Your computer - and web designers world wide, will thank you with tears in their eyes.

All in all, this is pretty much where we are at. Since yesterday, strangely enough, we have picked up some steam on a number of comics. Some are getting significantly closer to completion. Expect new material very soon!!!

MAJOR UPDATE TIME! PART ONE: COMICS

Hi everyone! Brace yourselves, this is going to be a long one!

We know it has been a while since new episodes and new comics have come up on the site. Be reassured - we are not dead yet. In the spirit of being honest and transparent with our fans and supporters, here is what is happening:

We had a month long conventions sequence that took us literally from one end of the country to the other. The logistics and preparation for that took its toll on our small crew. But it is not the only cause of delays.

For some reason, despite a healthy diversification of our artists and pencilers, most of our books are severely behind for reasons out of our control. Several of our pencilers had to deal with either health related or family and/or business related issues. with the end result that a lot of books are delayed. Which brings us to the following comic book related updates:

- Mr. Richard Pace, who was to pencil and ink the most excellent Ty Templeton scripted comic of The Canadian had to bailed out of those duties for health reasons. Consequently, we now welcome Daniel Wong to the team, who will pick up on Mr. Pace’s duties and will heroically attempt to nevertheless help us deliver the book on time for the end of the month for the upcoming Heroes of the North: Missions comic book coming out this summer via Ardenn Entertainment. Which is where we remind you to order the book from your favourite comic book retailer!!! Hopefully we manage to make that deadline and get that wonderful story in the book! If it does not make it in the book, you will at least get to enjoy it in our comic books section later this summer.

- You probably saw some work in progress on a Black Terror story by Zach Fisher, who did those terminally cute Chibis versions of our characters a little while back. Well, Zach has been hard at work on a very strange Black Terror story that will also be featured exclusively in our upcoming summer book. We do not want to tell you anything about this story except that it is so wild and fun, it is definitely not one you will not want to miss… Especially since it will only be available in the printed version of the Heroes of the North: Missions Omnibus! This story is also notable because we are introducing to you a new member of our little team, a new colourist from Serbia, Aljoša Tomić. Welcome to the team Aljoša! Aljoša joins to team to helps us lighten the load on poor Keiren Smith, who besides having life complications of her very own, was now faced with an incredible amount of pages to colour and letter since so many books were delayed… They are now typically, arriving mostly at the same time… Which created a major clog in the work flow and sadly amplified the delays.

- Another story that will only be found in the upcoming book is a tale called Politically Incorrect, by Yann Brouillette and masterfully illustrated by Geof Isherwood. This one is right on time. But it was meant as a back up tale. From the looks of it, it will end up in the book as well! And it definitely earned it - the art is simply stunning! Isherwood fans will be happy to hear that he also contributed his considerable talents to two short tales that will also be exclusive to the Heroes of the North: Missions release. One features the New Felquists and Fleur-de-Lys while the other is a fun 3 pages romp starring 8 Ball and Alpha Q called Blood Bath. Which is also our cue to introduce Zen, another talent coming to the rescue to help us get the books out on time! Zen will be lettering the shorter stories - and perhaps a few longer ones, in order to ease the burden on Keiren… who is heroically colouring and lettering an Acadia story, drawn by Geof Isherwood as well and written by Yann and Michel Brouillette, which will also be part of the book and very soon available online in our comic book section as well.

- Another story about to hit our comic book section very soon is the long awaited team-up by Archie artist Dan Parent. The Zombots being schooled story is a lot of fun and we just cannot wait for you to read it!!! It will be part of the book being released this summer as well.

- Those who enjoyed the art of our last Nordik/8 Ball team-up will be happy to learn that another exclusive story, a Pacifica tale this time, has been penciled and inked by David Cutler, with colours by Aljoša Tomić and lettering by Zen. And to complete the book, there will be the 8 Ball and Black Terror tale penciled by Gibson Quarter!

- And while it is not part of the next book, another important piece is being finished as we speak, albeit terribly late as well. We are talking about the 24 pages Season Finale book, which wraps up Season One and is written by Yann and Michel Brouillette, penciled by Olivier Raymond and inked by Kellam Templeton. This one is an action packed piece featuring most of the characters of Heroes of the North and is NOT to be missed!

Well, that is already a pretty major post and we have just covered the comics! So if you have read this far, you can pretty much surmised that we had our hands pretty busy just with conventions and comics! Our recent appearances at the Free Comic Book Day at L’Imaginaire in Quebec CIty and at the Ottawa Comicon made a number on our comic book reserves!

We regret to inform you that the Limited Edition Crimson: Dark Origins and Madame Doom: Dark Origins (including Black Terror) comics are officially sold out and out of print.

The only ways available at the moment to read the Crimson story is through the website in the Comics section or by ordering the digital version.

Both Madame Doom and Black Terror stories are found in the Heroes of the North Omnibus, a few copies of which are still available through the store, they are also both readable in the comics section of the site or they can be ordered in the store as digital downloads.

CALGARY COMICON

We are back from the Calgary Comicon and Fan Expo. The event was really well organized from an exhibitor standpoint, one of the best event we ever attended. The venue was packed, with people turned away on Saturday. The lines outside were incredibly long, with people lining up since 5:30 in the morning! Insane! We had a blast at the con and we are definitely considering returning next year. You can see our photos in the gallery.

Comic Bin did a little piece about the show during the Comicon. There were several other interviews but we do not have the links at the moment. There was also an article about the show in TV Week Magazine (Vancouver) which came out during the show.

We are back from a very successful Wizard World Convention in Toronto! Had lots of fun, sold out a lot of our comics and prints, met tons of new people, including Wrestler Edge (photo below with 8 Ball), got to see old fans and friends again!

The same weekend, there was also Le Salon du Livre de Québec, where we were guests of L’Imaginaire. Writers-actors Yann and Michel Brouillette, along with Marie-Claude Bourbonnais (Hornet) and artist Olivier Raymond hit the Convention Center floor for a panel, a signature session and a live drawing session with Olivier Raymond.

And now, we are getting ready for the next leg of the trip, the Calgary FAN EXPO! Hope to see some of you there!

Wizard World Toronto

Heroes of the North will be attending the Wizard World Toronto Convention on April 14 and 15 2012 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

8 Ball (Anderson Bradshaw) is going to be in attendance. There will also be tons of new merchandise: new T-shirts, prints, figurines and so on!

We commissioned artist Zach Fisher to create Chibi versions of our characters. For those not in the know, Chibi is a specific style of Japanese caricature where characters are drawn in an exaggerated way, typically small and chubby, with stubby limbs and oversized heads, to make them resemble small children. We are very happy with the end results which can be viewed in its own special Chibis section in our Galleries.

Al Rio passed away

Al Rio was one of the first big time artists to jump on board our little project. He drew the Fleur-de-Lys below. His implications helped pave the way for other artists to jump on board and lent us credibility. So it is with great sadness that we heard he has passed away this morning, from an apparent suicide. Fans are invited to leave messages on his DeviantArt page. Our thoughts and sympathies go to his friends and family. May he rest in peace.

The first stop on our brand new comic tour was Boutique L’Imaginaire, one of the nicest comic shop we have seen, in wonderful Quebec City and what a load of fun it was!
The awesome team headed by Jean-Michel created our small group of Northern Heroes with top notch reception and great organization. And the really friendly patrons contributed to the first SOLD OUT of the books - we ran through all the books that the store had ordered before the end of the event. Thankfully Jean-Michel had asked us to bring more so we were able to handle the shortage. We had a great time and wish to thank everyone who came by to chat with us, buy gear or discuss the wonders of the comic book world! Thanks again! We look forward to visit you again soon! May is apparently a lovely time to visit Quebec we are told… :-)

There was a screwup with the delivery of the Heroes of the North Omnibus. :-( The book is going to be at least one if not two weeks late because of it. But have no fear true believers we had copies printed beyond the Diamond orders, so we will bring item with us at the various signing events in Quebec, Montreal and Ottawa and we will give the retailers the quantities they ordered directly. Additional Shooting - Day 2 - Part One

We promised a shooting blog, so here it is, sort of.

We had an action and dialogues filled shooting day on our Day 2. Lots of actors and crew members were affected by a particularly nasty head flu that is going around at the moment, which made things worse in terms of patience and endurance. But thankfully both the cast and the crew appeared into it and the challenge were reduced somewhat by their collective enthusiasm.

We had a bit of a rough start as we were given the wrong suite number for our shoot - so we spent the best part of an hour chasing actors and crew members all over the hotel where we were shooting. It made us lose precious time on an already pretty packed day, that included an extensive fight sequence, a dozen different decors and setups and almost 20 pages of dialogues… Not to mention appearances by Masquerade, Medusa Commander, Acadia, the Nouveaux Felquistes, Hornet, Steel Tiger, Baxter and two Medusa Agents…

David Michaels from the Expert Comics blog came by for a set visit.

We had the pleasure, for the second day in a row, of having the visit of Dave Michaels, one of the bloggers over at Expert Comics, whom we had invited for a set visit. While almost inhumanly quiet for the most part, David was on the ball when it came to interview and question cast and crew members alike about the show. We look forward to his entertaining chronicles in the next few weeks. David ended up doing a lot more on the show but that is still top secret at the moment.

First scene on the shooting block involved Pia Metni as Masquerade and a complex fight sequence inside a tiny bathroom and bedroom, coordinated by Anderson Bradshaw. It is always a challenge to shoot in tight spots, especially when there are mirrors everywhere like the bathroom we had. It slows things down to a crawl. In tiny spaces, everyone is constantly bumping into the other, uncomfortable and it gets hot in no time. Combine that with being already an hour late in your schedule, you can literally feel your blood pressure rise as things get more and more slowed down by the environment. But we have a good crew that is also used to work with each other, so they went to work right away, trying to take back the time lost and still deliver an impressive fight sequence.

Once the stuntmen and the Fight Choreographer have mapped out the fight based on the location’s potential and what we have available, we bring the actress in to show her the sequence of events and address everyone’s potential concerns, especially those related to safety. We are lucky for this scene because Pia tremendously enjoys the fight sequences and she always approaches them with a kind of boundless enthusiasm that is very contagious.

The fight involving Masquerade and two Medusa Agents was to be extremely violent and necessitated several stages of make-up in between takes, dead time we used to shoot several other scenes in the various locations that the suite afforded.

One of these scenes involved the assignment of Acadia to the Montreal CDO division. Another prepared the introduction of a pivotal character for Season 2, Colonel Donovan.

It features Medusa Commander (Constantine Kourtidis in the show), the voluptuous Hornet (Marie-Claude Bourbonnais) and a mysterious aryan nurse, the identity of which you will discover while watching episode 20…and reading the Season Finale comic, of course! Donald Caron has done it again! This fantastic wrap around cover set piece features the deadly Hornet, captured in feral action, as she breaks inside the Flowers Industries weapons factory. One of the hardest illustrations he ever had to make apparently. But we cannot tell by looking at it! It is simply astonishing!

The attention to details in Donald’s work is simply astonishing! His Heroes of the North illustrations are simply out of this world!

This illustration will grace the print cover of the Hornet comic. We will also make a limited amount of prints, which you will be able to procure in the STORE.

The Hornet Comic Book is written by Yann Brouillette, with pencils and inks by MAS, Colours and lettering by Keiren Smith. Digital Version cover by Dean Yeagle and Print cover by Donald Caron.

Hornet is played by Marie-Claude Bourbonnais.

Episode Fifteen is finally online!

Well, it took a while but part three of the Heroes of the North Season One saga is now complete with the release today of Episode Fifteen: Wardrobe Malfunction.

It was one of the hardest episodes to complete for some reason, as several complications prevented us from releasing it when we wanted. But the important thing is, it’s HERE now.

This episodes sets various things in motion that will be resolved throughout Part IV: Medusa Rising next month. It is important to watch the episode all the way to the end, including after the usual logos, as it sets up events for episode sixteen and beyond.

This is one of the biggest episodes so far, over seven minutes in length, and featuring most of the main cast: Madame Doom, Crimson, Masquerade, Seymour and the Seymourettes, the New Felquists and an aggressive Zombot rounds up the villains side while 8 Ball, The Canadian and Fleur-de-Lys complete the Heroes side this time around.

EPISODE 15 UPDATE

Some news about Episode 15 - we getting closer to completion with mostly the sound effects remaining and the overall mix. We had a few hiccups on this one, including an unforeseen delay. But everything is back on track and should be ready for broadcast on Wednesday. It is quite a busy episode with appearances by Madame Doom, Seymour and the Seymourettes, 8 Ball, Fleur-de-Lys, Masquerade and even the Nouveaux Felquistes!

We are awaiting incessantly the arrival of the second batch of figurines, bar any customs problems like last time - we all have our fingers crossed over here! We are especially curious to see the Nordik figurine as it is the one we got the most ambitious with the LED effects. We should have some pictures to show you sometime next week. But in the meantime, you can have a look at the temp ones:

It currently appears that we will get the figurines in three distinct batches, because of container allocations. The first two to arrive should be Nordik and 8 Ball. Those who have made pre-orders will get them as we receive them, no extra charge for shipping.

The figurines that we receive will go into the main figurines sell page as they become in stock and disappear from the pre-order page.

Obviously, those who pre-ordered have shipping priority. Since we produce these in limited quantities, we ship them on a first come, first served basis.

Colour us impressed! Diamond Comics Distribution, the entity that releases comics books all across North America, has featured our upcoming 80 pages Omnibus in their coveted SPOTLIGHT section in their November magazine.

The comic book cover was drawn by Marcus MAS Smith and features more of Marcus art, along with Olivier Raymond’s, and several other contributions that will be announced shortly. The book is written by Yann and Michel Brouillette and distributed by Ardden Entertainment.

Expert Comics Interviews

While we were at the last Montreal Comicon, we had the pleasure of being interviewed by Dave Michaels who runs Full Page Bleed, one of the many blogs at Expert Comics, a Montreal virtual comic book shop.

Dave conducted two interviews with us. One with Hornet aka Marie-Claude Bourbonnais, complete with a cosplay souvenir book and one with Christian Viel and Yann Brouillette. Dave also did a little run down of his adventures.

Heroes of the North makes the News!

Today we had the pleasure of being invited at the CTV Montreal studios to do an interview with local anchorman Todd Van der Heyden, who is also a fervent comic book aficionado. He was recently hosting the Stan Lee and Adam West panels at the Montreal Comicon this year. Todd was an amazing host, who made us feel very welcome and put everyone at ease right from the start.

We created a little bit of a commotion as several employees did not know what was going on or who we were and for what and let’s say that two dark heroes and a colourful villainess in the middle of a cold October afternoon makes for a weird sight, even at a television station. For about twenty minutes, we felt we were back at the Montreal Comicon, distributing flyers, explaining what the show is about while actors were taking pictures with the enthusiastic staff members! It was great fun!

Once everybody was dressed up, we were brought inside the studio which was quite an impressive sight. It looks small yet somehow still conveys an impression of vastness. We have been interviewed countless times for television but this was our very first time inside a TV studio and it was quite an interesting experience. Everyone is working diligently, constantly communicating, even as the cameras are rolling, ensuring that everything goes well and that you end up with a pretty much finished product! A sight for sore eyes for us who have to painstakingly edit everything and then still have to add effects, sound and colour correction! ;)

It was a fun experience for our little group and we would like to thank everyone at CTV, and especially Todd, for making it such a smooth ride!

The interview with our three characters should air on Monday, October 31st, during a segment of Montreal CTV News at Noon, as part of their Halloween special.

Don’t worry if you miss it or do not get CTV - we will get a DVD of the piece and it will be added to the MEDIAS section of our site after the original airing.

And that’s about it in a nutshell! Let’s just say that it was quite a busy day here at Heroes of the North Central!

The omnibus will feature reprints of some of the web comics but also brand new material not available anywhere else! Mobile versions of the Heroes of the North site

Well, it has been a long time coming and it turned out to be WAY harder than we ever anticipated, but here we are within a few days of launching both the iPad and iPhone/iPod versions of the site. Versions for Android and other phones will follow in the next few weeks.

Now, the way it works is fairly simple and should be relatively fool proof: the site recognizes what sort of device you are using and automatically sends you to the site appropriate for the mobile device you are using. At the moment, for testing reasons, it only recognizes iPhone/iPods. But it will soon recognize iPads, Android devices, Blackberry and so on. If you are on a normal desktop computer, you go straight to the standard site you know and love.

The iPad version will be the one closest to the desktop experience. Other versions of the site may have more limited capacities due to design or technical issues, but most likely our own technical ineptitude as we have NEVER done this before.

Of course, to do all this, we had to recode the entire site partially in a different language. That means some pages had to change names. We lost a lot of our Facebook likes and some ratings and comments. Please feel free to “re-like” or “re-comment” if you are in the mood! Another casualty might be faulty links. If you get one, PLEASE EMAIL US! We tried hard to eliminate them and redirect as many pages as we could but we have literally thousands of pages on this site and it is getting hard to track. So you help is immensely appreciated.

For the most part, you should not see a major change on the site, besides minor cosmetic changes, except if you are on a mobile device, that is… But we did put back a Forum in response to popular demand. It is much easier to login - use your Facebook ID if you want or a password, the old fashioned way. It is also cleaner and better integrated as well. So please register and post! Otherwise it will disappear again! ;)

Fleur-de-Lys: Blooming, our upcoming comic in the series, courtesy of writer Yann Brouillette and artist Olivier Raymond, has been a long time coming. But it is finally getting there. We are hopeful that you will see two books this month and Fleur-de-Lys is definitely one of them. It is a very intriguing story that relates the childhood of Fleur-de-Lys and her brothers and the complex relationship that unites them, then and today.

As usual, there is a sneak peak, of inked pages. We cannot wait for you folks to read this story, one of the best we have written so far!

Site Improvements and other news

We keep trying on improving the site whenever we can get around to it. We finally figured out a way better search engine for the site, which is accessible via the magnifying glass icon on the side bar on your right.

We have also added a Podcasts and Radios Interviews section in the Medias menu since we have done quite a bit of those. It is by no means a complete list - it will slowly grow over the next few weeks as we put everything online. There is also several new press links in the same section.

The final version of the Omnibus cover by MAS has also been added to the Gallery in the Artists Interpretations tab.

Also coming very soon, both in the Freebies section of the store, the long awaited Wall Papers AND a downloadable MP3 version of the theme song. You will also have the option of playing it via our mini player.

The Production tab in the about section has finally been completed: read all about how, when and with what the show was shot!

We also have answered a new question in the FAQ - which has to do with our appearances schedule. All informations regarding our appearances is also accessible in the sidebar by clicking the calendar button, again in the right side bar.

We have also added a nifty little DIMMER button that allows you to darken the screen when watching the episodes.

And to make signing up for our newsletter easier as well, we have it now inside a popup when you click that big red button on the right.

We have also added a sidebar menu that follows you everywhere on the left, so you do not have to scroll back to go to other parts of the site.

And lastly, we have added a mini menu on each comic book pages so that you can jump with ease on any of the currently available comics without having to go back to the main menu.

Montreal Comicon is over...

… And what a weekend it was! We have not heard any numbers yet but we are pretty sure that last year’s record breaking attendance was broken! So many people came to visit, it was intense! We are still reeling for all the flashes that captured the images of Hornet, 8 Ball, The Canadian and Medusa Commander this weekend. We got to speak to hundreds of fans, some of them first day adopters, and we made a lot of new ones along the way. It was a whirlwind of action all weekend long. We also had a chance to have a very nice dinner with Dan Parent (Archie), his wife and son, as well as the always entertaining Ty Templeton (too many books to count) and his lovely wife Keiren (Heroes of the North, Tights and Fights, Northern Guard) and Gibson Quarter, who will be soon illustrating the 8 Ball comic for us.

A special thanks goes to Oscar, Alex and Elizabeth and all the Comicon staff who worked hard with limited means to put the show together and seriously impressed us with a pretty tight organization overall. The only downside for us was the aggressive attitude of the Place Bonaventure staff - they seemed to be trying very hard to make sure no one felt welcome! Fleur-de-Lys Blooming sneak peek!

It is a long time coming, this book. But it will be worth the wait. Many delays have plagued this book so far but we just saw some coloured pages tonight, about 60% done, and let’s just say that they are amazing! And the story by Yann Brouillette which tells of the childhood of Fleur-de-Lys and her brothers is quite an interesting tale that will add a lot of pathos to the Heroes of the North mythos. I know, it rhymes.

Since the colours are not 100% complete, we will not show them yet, despite the fact that they are already stunning. But we will give you a little sneak peek nevertheless at the first page, inked and lettered, complete with a small grammatical error that will be fixed for the final version.

Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18, the 2011 edition of the Montreal Comicon will be happening at the Place Bonaventure Convention Center. And this one promises to be the biggest yet, with Stan Lee in attendance for the first time ever in Montreal, Adam West and Burt Ward and so on… Of course, your favourite friendly neighbourhood web series will be there as well, with some brand new merchandise and some killer conventions specials. Time to put some money aside for that Hornet figurine you want… Because it will be available at a special and exclusive convention price.

In attendance for the two days of merriment will be: the facetious 8 Ball and the striking Hornet in her even more striking Season 2 outfit, and the brilliant mind of Alpha Q!

Also, in more sporadic appearances, we will find the nefarious Medusa Commander alongside the first ever appearance of The Canadian to any convention ever!

First, a really cool review from the Web Series Wonders blog to start off the weekend…

Two, big news, HUGE news in fact for our little comics that could… Can’t say too much but an American publisher is gonna put our a 96 pages Omnibus of the books throughout the comic book retailers network across North America. Huge exposure for your favourite Heroes! More detail next week as the press release comes out!

Three, stuff is brewing on the toy front as well. So much is happening it is hard to keep track….

Fourth, we got to meet lots of talented young Canadian creators at the last Fan Expo and several of them will join our art team in the coming months. Special thanks to Ty Templeton and Keiren Smith for shepherding some of these encounters...

We are pleased as punch to announce that will be adding a few comics to our line-up of books for Season 1. The comics menu page will be updated in the next few days to reflect these additions.

Besides the books already listed in the comics section, you will be able to look forward to books about the following characters:

Some new artists will soon join us as well - more on that as things develop, but you can see a little sample above. However, here is a major scoop about the Canadian book. The Canadian comic, a 12 pages story, will be written by none other than jolly Ty Templeton. Winner of a Joe Shuster award as “outstanding writer” for his work on The Batman Adventures in 2005, it is with great anticipation that we welcome Mr. Templeton to the Heroes of the North fold. We cannot wait to read what he comes up with!

A lot more things are going on behind the scenes but we cannot reveal them to you yet...

Place Vine Blog review

The Place Vine Blog, which reviews Branded Entertainment, Web Series and YouTube Channels, recently took a peek at our show:

Koldcast scores another TKO with the web series “Heroes of the North,” chronicling the awesome adventures of a butt-kicking band of colorfully costumed Canucks – including The Canadian (Larry Vinette), Fleur-de-Lys (Edith Labelle), 8 Ball (Anderson Bradshaw), Nordik (supermodel Vanessa Blouin), Black Terror (John Fallon), and Canadian Shield (comic writer Michel Brouillette) – that basically comprise The Justice League of Canada. Together they face off against an equally elaborate assembly line of supervillains, mostly from the evil organization called Medusa. Extensive individual character background files, digital comic books and multi-media merchandise, including collectible figurines, augment this ambitiously designed and expertly engineered alternative universe, every bit as inventive, engaging, entertaining, complex and just plain fun as X-Men or Watchmen and even The Avengers (at least the comics version). There are episodes devoted to each hero’s unique origin story, and many feature French subtitles, adding spice to the “exotic” North of the Border flavor. The production values are simply spectacular, including the sexy costuming, credible action choreography, and budget-limited but contextually satisfying special effects. All in all, this is Geek’s Paradise Found.

Fan Expo Toronto

We are back from a gruelling four days at the Toronto Fan Expo!

We had a rough start as the booth assigned to us had no furniture hours before the show was to start. It took over three hours to get our two tables and a handful of chairs so we could set up before the doors opened… We had less than 45 minutes to do so when all was said and done.

But that was not to be the end of the ordeal. Around 4 PM, a group of voice actors showed up, saying they were assigned the same booth as us., which was in fact, true. So somehow over 15 people were expected to share a 10 x 10 booth. THere was a lot of confusion for several hours until the show ended and we could manage to clear things out. Needless to say, it was a very unpleasant experience for all involved.

So overnight we had to change our location to one that was less optimal but still better than what was originally proposed by the organizers, i.e. a small table under the stairs in the hall.

The other days went much better, with Hornet and 8 Ball leaving quite a strong impression on several thousands of fans. Thousands of pictures taken later, we ran out of 8 Ball keychains, calendars and Hornet reproductions. The brand new Crimson comic, still hot off the press, was also a definite success as we almost sold out of it as well.

We also got to hang out with Dan Parent, who is currently penciling our Team-up issue, finally met in person with Ty Templeton and his wife Keiren, both of whom have done work for Heroes of the North.

The hours were very long, and at times it felt more like a marathon than a convention, but the enthusiasm of the fans, old and new, kept us going through it all. Photos will be posted in a few days in the gallery but in the meantime, you can read this article from the Toronto Sun…

Toronto Fan Expo and Hornet comic

As some of you may know, we will be attending the Toronto Fan Expo next week, from August 25th to 28th. You will be able to find us at booth 211. Hornet and 8 Ball will be in attendance, along with the show’s producer and a few other guests. A limited edition print version of the Crimson comic will be available for the first time (50 copies only!). Folks who comment on our Fan Expo Facebook thread before Wednesday, August 24th and bring a printout of their comments to our booth will also get a free random surprise.

Besides photo op at the boot, we will have the entire assortment of merchandise currently available in our store, including Hornet figurines you can get signed by the lady herself if you so desire.

That being said, the Hornet comic book will hit the inter webs early next week, just in time for the Fan Expo. Here’s a sneak peek.

Just in time for the Acadians National Holiday comes Ty Templeton’s vision of our character of Acadia.

We love Ty Templeton over here at HOTN Central. First of all, he is Canadian. Second, he was worked for almost every major comic book company under the sun, Third, he has worked on Batman AND Spider-Man, fourth, he’s a writer and an accomplished artist and teacher, and like most Canadians, he’s funny as all hell, fifth, he has a cartoon blog called Bun Toons, sixth, he’s bursting with passion for comics as an art form and a story telling medium, seventh, he is one of the creative minds behind Hoverboy, eight, he draws himself as a rabbit, ninth, he took us HOTN folks seriously and with respect from day one, despite our ridiculous means, and tenth, his wife is also a comic book professional who letters and colours comics… Better yet, she even does us the favour of working on some of our books once in a while. So what is not to love? Feast your eyes on his latest Heroes of the North offering.

To celebrate, we have decided to put online the screenplays to the Origins episodes. You can access them from the spiffy new Episodes menus for the Origins block our directly on the episode page, by clicking on the script icon below the CAST AND CREW icon.

For those with an interest in production, it will be the perfect way to see where things went wrong, what went well, what was improved or destroyed.

It also allows you to see how we manage to shoot the episode, often with limited resources. How faithful, or not, we manage to remain to the source material.

In any case, we thought it would be a cool addition to the episodes and if it turns out to be popular, we may well implement it on all episodes.

We are never short of ideas over here at Heroes of the North Central. And we are known from not shying away from weirdness, oddities and other directions some would not venture into. So we had a good laugh initially when a fellow filmmaker suggested we made condoms as promo items for the show. Just making condoms made little sense. But using it in the context of World War II era propaganda against venereal diseases and using the Canadian Shield logo and name for the brand... That was a step we did not hesitate to make. Just because it is so darn funny. Here are some of our very real, actual, honest to goodness WII propaganda inspirations.

They are coming, folks. Pun intended. Keep an eye out in the store for the Limited Edition Collector’s Edition Canadian Shield Prophylactics... We extensively tested our first test batch. They are ready for prime time. They will be ready for Fan Expo. Get them while they last!

Toronto Fan Expo 2011

Donald Caron has become our go to artist for the print versions of our comics. He has crafted amazing epic renditions of our characters. And we reached an agreement today for him to make much, much more of those groovy covers.

As some of you may know, part of the story is also told via different websites. For awhile now we have had the CDO website, which is accessible by clicking the white CDO icon in the sidebar. And now, the Medusa website is officially online as well. Like its predecessor, it can be accessed from the sidebar by cliciking on the black Medusa icon. Lots of clues and elements for upcoming story lines can be found in the intricacies of these sites. Keep an eye out for the soon to be online Nouveaux Felquistes sites as well.

Fleur-de-Lys Comic Layouts!

We received the layouts for the Fleur-de-Lys: Blooming comic which is drawn, colored and lettered by Olivier Raymond (who also did our vintage style Canadian Shield cover illustration for the Canadian Shield comic). We were literally blown away by the work so far and we are pretty excited by this comic which shows a little more in-depth the trial and tribulations of Fleur-de-Lys and her brothers, now and in the past. It is a great story by Yann Brouillette that is bound to leave no one indifferent, and the stunning work by Olivier Raymond is only bringing this comic to the next level, making it one of the best ones in the HOTN series so far, on par with the Crimson comic, if we may say so ourselves. We cannot wait to show you this one but in the meantime, as usual, here’s a look at the rough layouts to wet your appetite.

Anne-Marie Losique is Madame Doom!

You read that right! Quebec celebrity and media mogul Anne-Marie Losique will portray the borderline insane Madame Doom, a disfigured former fashion model that now controls a major drug cartel supplying the fashion and entertainment industry in the Heroes of the North universe. The first episode she appears in, Episode 13, will be online on July 11th.

We are pretty happy to have Anne-Marie on board mainly because she was the person we always wanted for the character. So much so that had she passed on the opportunity, we would have created another villain.

So it was with great pleasure that we learned she was to accept our invitation to join the cast. And while that particular shoot was excessively chaotic - there was a major snow storm that day that caused us tons of griefs and delays, Anne-Marie was an absolute trooper throughout, on time despite the snow storm (unlike some of our own crew!) and a joy to work with!

The episode will be online on Monday, July 11. While it is somewhat light on action, the script by Jim Burke is quite surreal in atmosphere and situations, while the interplay between Anne-Marie (as Madame Doom) and Pia Metni (as Masquerade) is very entertaining.

Keep an eye out because Madame Doom will be back in Episode 15, along with with Crimson (Bianca Beauchamp), Fleur-de-Lys (Edith Labelle), The Canadian (Larry Vinette), 8 Ball (Anderson Bradshaw) and Masquerade (Pia Metni). Oh! And you will get to meet the excentric Seymour (Babak Motamed) and his ravishing Seymourettes (Baj Singh and Christelle Fournier).

New Facebook and Google Buttons

As some of you may have noticed, there are new social buttons on the individual episodes pages and on the comic book pages. On the Facebook side, next to the recommand button, you will find a shiny brand new SEND button. It lets users send a private message containing the URL to their Facebook friends, as an email to any email address, or to the group wall of one of their Facebook groups. So there you have it.

As for the Google +1 button, here’s what the behemoth of search engines has to say about it:

Hornet Comic Sneak Peek

The End of an Era: Les Has-bines

It is a sad day today at HOTN central.

Today is the last episode of what is probably the longest running web series ever (to our knowledge): Les Has-bines. It is a French Canadian (or Québécois, depending on where you stand on the nationalist agenda), web series about two actors who where on top of the world as youth idols in their prime but now have a hard time landing any job and trying everything to recover some of their former glory. It ends today with its 94th episode...

Let that sink in. 94 episodes. That in itself is a feat.

What is more amazing however, is that despite an absolute lack of budget and several technical issues, most notably with sound and sometimes picture, they somehow managed to keep an incredible level of quality in the stories and performances throughout, something that even most professional TV shows can’t manage in 13 episodes, let alone 94... With a virtual Who’s who of Québecois celebrities, from both TV and the WEB guest-starring on the show, (including the now world famous Jon Lajoie), they brought another layer of credibility to what was an already brilliant premise. With sometimes surreal storylines and situations, one of our favourites being the Ukrainian daycare sharing the basement office of the desperately hopeless agent of the even more hopeless duo, they walked a very fine line between several forms of humour with flawless ease.

Using dark humour and a comedy approach based on the systematic humiliation and embarrassment of its main protagonists, the show has created a wealth of fans over the years. And we are some of them. So much so that we have asked the two Has-Bines, (pictured below: closest to camera, the one with hair and in a White Humeur Design T-shirt is Has-Bine Leduc and the bald one in a trademark New Felquists checkerboard jacket is Has-Bine Mongrain), to appear in Episode 19: Opération Roche & Roule, one of the most hilarious episode of the Heroes of the North series and definitely the most fun we EVER had shooting. For completists, the last New Felquist in the back is Eric Pfalzgraf from another hilarious Québécois TV show, Phylactère Cola.

So it is with great sadness that we have to see Les Has-Bines go. But it is with fond memories and the sincere hope that from the ashes of their show rises a new phoenix of opportunities for the hilarious duo, that we bid a fond farewell to les Has-Bines. It was a great run and they have probably made web series short history by longevity alone. May it rest in peace and inspire new groundbreaking work. So long and thanks for everything. You were definitely an inspiration for all of us here.

PS: Yes, the show is in French. But if you do understand French, watch it! It is worth every penny! Trust us!

Heroes of the North Advertising Network

It is with great pleasure that we finally announce the launch of our very own advertising network. This has been a long time coming and we are happy to have it finally see the light of day. Additionally, we have opened up the possibility to have ads in our printed comics, after getting a few requests about the possibilities, we have now opened it up to anyone with deep enough pockets. Hurry up if you want in on the next comic because the deadline is July 31st! That’s it for the capitalist aspect!

R.I.P. Gene Colan

We are big fans of Gene Colan here at Heroes of the North and it is with great sadness that we learned today of his passing. Mr. Colan was responsible for astonishing runs on Daredevil and illustrated one of our faves, Howard the Duck. Besides his impressive body of work for MArvel, he also illustrated several Batman issues for DC, amongst other great stuff. We would like to extend our sincere condoleances to Mr. Colan’s family and remember his legacy.

Heroes of the North, Archie Style!

You cannot be a fan of superhero comics and not be at least remotely aware of Archie Comics. Heck, our old pal Archie Andrews even had a run-in with the Punisher, no less! So to have a rendition of some of the HOTN characters Archie-style was definitely a no-brainer.

Dan Parent, writer and illustrator of several Archie Comics books, and more specifically creator of Kevin Keller, the first openly gay character in Riverdale, has agreed to do a cover for an upcoming comic book currently entitled Zombots getting schooled by Yann Brouillette. We met the groundbreaking writer and artist at the MegaCON in Orlando this March and we must say that it has been an absolute pleasure to collaborate with the man, not to mention his Canadian (and more specifically Quebec) Connection.

The fun-filled cover is ready and features The Canadian, Fleur-de-Lys and Nordik. It is our pleasure to show it to you in all its glory:

The comic will not be online for a little while however as we have to release a Fleur-de-Lys and a Hornet story before that but you can also view the piece in higher resolution from our newly revamped Galleries or procure it from our store as a reproduction.

Pacifica: Origins comic now online!

The Pacifica comic is now online! Find out how Victoria Kelinza became the Vancouver based heroine known as Pacifica! Written by Yann Brouillette, penciled, inked and coloured by Marcus MAS Smith and lettered by Keiren Smith with a cover by Ty Templeton.

On a side note, all our comics are now HTML5, hence readable on all those Flash adverse devices. They are also in a easier to read online format.

Episode 12 and further website modifications

Episode 12 is finally online!!! Despite many attempts and our best efforts, this one was a tough one to release! What a struggle this one has been! For some reason, we had a string of problems with this episode, but the biggest one was a corruption of some footage files - we could not open the files from 2 cameras... It has taken weeks to find a way to recover the files somewhat intact - but then, the slow-motion shots where all screwed up. So it took a few weeks to fix those as well, and not for the best at that... Plus lots of other issues, some computer related, some logistics related... But it is finally here, better late than never as they say...

On another front, our website is growing at an alarming rate and it has started to create issues for us in terms of file management and memory... So we have to go back, tweak some things, restructure others and so on. So expect a few disruptions in some areas for the coming few weeks.

One of the first major changes is that the comics section is now in HTML 5, hence readable on ipads and other flash adverse devices.

Black Terror Figurine

We got the first painted prototype of the Black Terror figurine, played on screen by John Fallon. The figurine was designed by Marcus MAS Smith and sculpted by Gensen. This figurine comes with red LEDs inside the head, which gives it an even creepier look when lit! Check out a few more pictures of the current work in progress... The chest logo is missing at this stage and there are a few more details to be added but it is almost there! There are currently four (4) figurines ready to ship. There will be a grand total of twelve (12) figurines for the first season of Heroes of the North.

Episode 12: Crimson coming May 2nd!

Those of you who read or subscribe to our Newsletter are already aware that the long awaited Episode 12: Crimson is finally coming out on May 2nd, just in time for Election Day here in Canada!

We had to postpone the release of the episodes for a variety of reasons, in no particular order: sickness, website revamp, and the Canadian weather which has prevented us from shooting a few remaining scenes to complete the bulk of Season One. The weather is still not playing nice but it is coming to an end (hopefully!), so we will be able to resume shooting soon, the website revamp is almost finished and we are healthy again! So we are back on track and roaring to go!

For those who have not yet done so, we highly recommend reading the Crimson comic BEFORE watching the episode.

Episode 12 features Bianca Beauchamp as the deadly Crimson, an assassin for hire working for the duplicitous Masquerade (Pia Metni). However, Crimson and her wolf, Lupa, will find Nordik (Vanessa Blouin) on their path of destruction... Be ready for quite a fight on May 2nd! It will not only be limited to the ballots!

Pacifica Inks

Here is a sneak peek at a couple of inked pages from the upcoming Pacifica: Origins comic book written by Yann Brouillette and penciled and inked by Marcus MAS Smith. This is one of the lightest stories in tone so far in the Heroes of the North universe and is a breath of fresh air in our admittedly dark cycle of comics. We cannot wait to show you the whole story which will come out some time during the month of May. Keep an eye out for our Newsletter (or sign up if you have not already!) for more info on the release date of both the comic and Episode 17, which will introduce Pacifica and the lovely Alexandra Ordolis, who plays the Vancouver superheroine in the live action episodes.

Our MegaCon appearance in World of Superheroes

While we were at the Orlando MegaCon, we met lots of people. Amongst them were the very nice folks over at World of Superheroes. They did a nice little piece on our booth over there. They talk about the concept, the merchandise (which seems to have left quite an impression) and the booth in general. Some excerpts:

“It was one of the most impressive booths at Megacon. The concept, the look, the enthusiasm and not least the stunning girls from the series made it different from anything else on view.”

New Bundles!

As a general request, we have reintroduced Bundles in the Figurines, Comics and Reproductions sections of the Heroes of the North Store.

For example, you can get all the currently available figurines through one bundle, get only the Heroes or only the Villains. In the Comics section, you can get both currently available comic using the same shipping cost (Canada Post charges the same amount, for one or two comics anyways).

This new bundling system allows you to save on shipping - we know how crazy shipping costs can get - sometimes by bundling items, it is a better way to save. Enjoy!

The last three designs for the Heroes of the North First Season series of Figurines are finally out! Designed by Marcus “MAS” Smith, they feature Pacifica (played by Alexandra Ordolis), Masquerade (played by Pia Metni) and the evil Medusa Commander (played by Constantine Kourtidis). Back from MegaCon - Things to Come!

We are officially back from MegaCon. We had a total blast meeting all our current fans and making some new ones. The weather was great throughout and we met tons of super nice folks. The only shadow was that Fedex managed to screw the delivery of some of our items. Other than that, everything went without a hitch.

We also got to make some contact with new cover artists for our upcoming comics. Archie Comics writer and illustrator Dan Parent will be one of them, as well as Toronto artist Kevin Yan who does Manga style epic like nobody’s business. Cannot wait to see what they come up with!

And amongst all that, despite being a stone throw away, we managed to miss the Rob Granito scandal.

We are also amongst numerous very talented nominees in the fiction and drama, Web TV, for the Numix Awards. Wish us luck!

And we are almost done with the French implementation of the site, so we will be returning to our regular schedule pretty soon!

MegaCon Sampler DVD

For those who come and visit us and buy some of our merch at booth 1131 this week from March 24 until 27th at the Orlando MegaCon will get a DVD sampler of the show along with a little surprise. Attending this time are Hornet, Alpha Q and Fleur-de-Lys respectively played by Marie-Claude Bourbonnais, Yann Brouillette and Edith Labelle. We hope to meet some of our American fans there so do not be shy and come say hi!

Site Modifications so far...

Well, we ran in a few problems along the way but we are still breezing along with the modifications, albeit not as fast as we would like.

Currently implemented:

- Live Twitter feed from our account, at the bottom of the ABOUT page (available by clicking the Heroes of the North logo on the top left corner);
- Events section with a calendar of our appearances;
- The Characters pages has some new add ons but more are still to come. We did manage to get a better presentation for the characters spec sheets and it should be now easier to read via the light box display;
- the possibility of tweeting about an episode or comic without leaving the site is now fully implemented;
- Visual improvements to both the Medias and About sections, including a better offsite viewer, again through a light box system, are all in place.

What is currently being worked on:

- Digital downloads - we are still far from our goal here - the in-house tests work but the outside tests have all failed so far;
- Membership section: delayed by the issues we are encountering with the digital downloads. We are using a similar script for both.
- Newsletter - we have had no time to tackle this one yet - but it is coming;
- French version of the site - progressing at high speed - should be online by the end of next week;
- Search page will be live in a few days.

Pacifica comic

The Pacifica: Origins comic is coming soon, in preparation for episode 17 which will relate some of her adventures in Quebec later this spring. We have a few layout pages for those interested. Obviously this is not final art, just the basic layouts that the artist does to shape the flow of the story. Art by MAS and script by Yann Brouillette. Pacifica is played by Alexandra Ordolis in the live action show.

Site Modifications and Comics!

Freebies have been moved to the Store section. You may notice the Membership icon - this is not quite yet active - but coming VERY soon.
In the store section, the Madame Doom comic is also now available to buy - the comic ships end of next week! The digital downloads of the comics will be available shortly as well, definitely within the next few days. Please note that the digital downloads of a particular comic will not be active until the paper version is also available.
The Characters pages are the next implementation, along with the cast and crew lists. The cast and crew lists will be found directly inside each episodes while the Characters pages will have its own menu. The galleries will also keep being implemented slowly over the weeks.
Other add-ons and improvements we are working on: a newsletter functionality to which people may subscribe in order to be kept informed of what is happening in the Heroes of the North Universe, a Calendar function where all our appearances, episodes and comic releases and other events throughout the year will be listed, a search engine page dedicated to the site itself, to make it easier to find what you are looking for, a live twitter feed update, the possibility to tweet your favourite links without leaving the site, visual improvements to the Medias and About section, etc.
Also left to implement are the other two story sites, the Medusa Industries one and the New Felquists, which should roll out in the next couple of months. Right now, you can enjoy the first of these sites here.
As usual, don’t be shy to let us know what you think of the new site, what features you would like to see, what we could do better, etc.

New Store and French Version

We are implementing the newest version of the store tonight. Not everything is available but it should be fairly soon. Also, you may have noticed some Canadian and Quebec flags popping up - this is experimental for the moment as we are working on the French version of the site. The French functionality should be available within the next two weeks.
La version française du site devrait être disponible d’ici deux semaines. Nous sommes présentement en phase test. Si vous voyez des pages avec des drapeaux Canadiens et Québécois, cela veut dire que ces pages sont en phase test et donc qu’une version française complète ou partielle est donc disponible. Crimson Comic now online!

The Crimson comic book written by Yann and Michel Brouillette, penciled by Marcus Smith aka MAS, with a cover by Armando Huerta for the online version and a cover by Donald Caron for the print version (Available later), is now online. The character of Crimson is interpreted by model Bianca Beauchamp in the series. WARNING: This is an extremely harsh story and it will offend some readers. Discretion is strongly advised. We recommend however that people who can stomach it read it BEFORE watching Episode 12. It will give a lot more depth to the content of that episode.

Freebies are now activated. Galleries are slowly being implemented. Facebook functionalities have been added to all Comics and Video Medias. The Crimson comic should go live sometime this week. We highly recommend to read it BEFORE the episode. Be warned however that the subject matter is pretty harsh and that sensitive readers may have a hard time with it.

Hi Everyone! Welcome to our brand new, fully redesigned website! It is perhaps less flashy but it is definitely easier to navigate and everything is easier to find - at least we would like to think so. Visit the newly revamped store and get your favourite Heroes of the North gear or dig into one of our digital comics (also available in paper in the store and pretty soon available as a download!), watch the latest episodes which you can now rate and comment, visit us in the brand new forum or get your questions answered through the FAQ section. We are at the early stage of implementation. There is a lot more to come in the next few weeks. In the meantime, explore, visit and most of all, enjoy!
