Waiting for permission?

Feeling held back because you lack in the “education” part of your resume?

Think that success is out of your reach?

Are you waiting for permission to be successful?

College Dropout Billionaires

We live in a culture where people “wait for permission. Permission to do what they love. Permission to do what they love. Permission to let their ideas and vision have a place in the world. They wait for someone to manage them and their dreams instead of taking responsibility for their own lives. They complain instead of solve and wait for a list of tasks they can check off and say ‘Done’.” (Click to see the original post for this quote.)

Education isn’t bad, but too many people use it as an excuse. This presentation lists 11 people who chose to be different. The didn’t wait for permission, they went out and made their own fortune.

Hammerstein-Equord

In the book The Silences of Hammerstein, Chief of the German Army High Command Hammerstein-Equord is quoted as stating the following:

I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, hardworking, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and hardworking – their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy — they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and hardworking – he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief. *

In the months since first reading this quote at the Ribbonfarm, I’ve been unable to stop thinking about it and its implications. I detail out the four groups identified by Hammerstein in this post for two reasons.

Awareness of the different groups prevents the intentional mind from falling into the wrong one

I will refer to this post in future articles

Let’s start with what I believe is the worst group of the four.

Stupid & Hardworking

Problem causers. Trouble makers. Dangerous.

If only these people were truly unintelligent. Unfortunately, “stupid” here refers more to a skewed perspective in a given situation than intellectual capability. Not to be mistaken with those who can take a different perspective and “think outside of the box”, this group creates problems that do not truly exist…and then work mercilessly to address them.

Getting lost in the details, the Stupid & Hardworking miss the big picture yet their commitment to hard work ensures they implement their solution regardless. These are the developers that spend weeks and months creating applications but never consulting end-users. Business owners who create supply for which their is no demand.

If you’ve watched the television series “The Office”, this is Dwight Schrute.

Detrimental to any business or social group, Quadrant A is to be avoided at all costs.

Stupid & Lazy

Work avoiders. The overwhelming majority of the population.

Despite their actual level of intelligence, this group has chosen to behave as though they had just enough brains to get out of bed, get dressed, go to work, come home…and repeat. They don’t know how to identify problems or opportunities. In the event that they told about a problem or opportunity, members of this group avoid hard work if possible AND fail to innovate solutions.

Not as dangerous as Quadrant A who are running around causing problems, Quadrant B can at least be harnessed together and managed by the Smart Quadrants. Unfortunately, they are lazy in the worst sense of the word since their laziness diminishes the quality of their own lives.

They wait for permission. Permission to do what they love. Permission to let their ideas and vision have a place in the world. They wait for someone to manage them and their dreams instead of taking responsibility for their own lives. They complain instead of solve and wait for a list of tasks they can check off and say “Done”.

A ridiculous percentage of the Stupid & Lazy believe they will get rich and retire from their winnings in the lottery. Until then, they dwell in cubicles and tend to their lawn on the weekends waiting for something to change.

(This is the group that complains about their boss being lazy instead of doing something to make their situation better.)

Clever & Hardworking

Workaholics. Middle management. Classic boot-strappers.

Not the bottom of the food chain…but generally not the top either.

Members of Quadrant C are smart enough to identify actual problems and opportunities. They know what needs to be done and have formulated a plan of action. This group isn’t afraid of hard work and therefore, unfortunately, their plan usually consists of only one strategy: work as hard and as long as necessary.

It’s not so much that members of Quadrant C are workaholics for work’s sake but rather that they are addicted to work as their go to solution. They may be addicted to the praise and sense of accomplishment, but they would just as soon accept it were it to come from something other than long hours.

Be certain that on the ladder of success, this group has a place. Their climb is long and hard but rewards can exist.

(This is the group that the perceived lazy boss actually relies on the most.)

Clever & Lazy

Innovators. CEO and Upper management. The super rich.

Surprised to see the list of members for this group?

Lazy is not being defined in the classic sense equal to slothfulness here; Quadrant D is full of people who have worked hard. The defining characteristic separating this group from the previous one is that working hard is never the first choice.

Like the Smart and Hardworking group, this one is smart enough to identify problems and opportunities. Where they differ is how they approach those problems and opportunities. While the previous group’s strategy is working late nights and weekends, members of this group innovate more creative solutions in order to save the time and energy the first group is spending.

This creativity, this innovation, is the reason Hammerstein wanted clever, lazy people as his highest leadership. Instead of throwing more man-hours at a problem, this group looks for a much more elegant solution. When you’re dealing with war, that means more people survive the solution than those led by the preceding group.

When dealing with business, it might just mean that you survive with less debt and ulcers than the preceding group.

Hammerstein wasn’t the only one to recognize this group’s strengths. As a result, many members of this group end up managing and delegating to the other groups.

(Which means those who were complaining about their boss being lazy might actually be right.)

Where do you fall?

Problem creator? Permission seeker? Workaholic? Innovator?

I see them as a progression and have personally been part of each group. My life resume would include entries for times I’ve spent conjuring up problems to solve, avoiding problems, working on real problems, and creating innovative solutions just as many of yours would too.

Which ones have you been part of?

Which one is where you are right now…and how is that affecting your life?

Discussing the elephant

Spend one day on Twitter following links to people’s blogs and you’ll think that most people have reached financial nirvana. They appear financially free while living lives of opulence. Everyone appears to have a muse. Everyone is an expert at marketing and business. Everyone has been set free from the “factory” because they’ve all chose a different path and they’re all doing amazing things that no one else is doing.

The promise is that if you truly dedicate yourself to blogging, social media, email newsletters, and a host of other disciplines, then within a year or two, you’ll be making enough money to quit your job and live anywhere in the world (that you can find an internet connection). This promise is strengthened by the fact there appear to be people who HAVE done this!

A thriving community has sprung up around this promise as people look for the promised land.

But let’s talk honestly for a moment.

Most bloggers are not making a living blogging. They might be making a few bucks here and there, but not enough to quit their jobs.

Don’t get me wrong; people are dead serious about this community. They learn their craft well. They build communities and reach out to others. And unlike many communities, the blogging community is amazing about creating documentation on HOW to do what the community is all about! Nonstop documentation about how to blog allows anyone to step into the community and immediately feel like a professional amateur.

But when it comes to people making a living off of this community, the dirty little secret is that very few people could support themselves online. And the dirty BIG secret is that the people making a living off of this community aren’t doing it because they’re good bloggers or they get the best traffic, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

Face it, if the blogging community were a room, the fact that the overwhelming majority aren’t making enough to live off of is the elephant that no one is talking about.

Here come the pitchforks and torches

Cover your eyes because I’m about to call blogging what it really is for most people…

A hobby.

For some of us, this stings a little bit. Sucks, huh?

While I’m sure this has the potential to draw out an angry crowd, I’m not saying this to start a fight or be sensational. But since the mob might already be assembling, let’s just go for it.

Similar to a bunch of flower children dancing in the woods, the hobbyist blogger sings the song of giving away almost everything for free creating content and hoping that they can sell their PDF files ebooks and courses to each other. People create pages on their blogs advertising their ability to rehash what they’ve read consulting services. It is a community with a large percentage of people who can’t be around others are blazing trails and have never been above an entry level position willingly left their corporate jobs in hopes of being lazy and getting rich doing things their own way.

Are you mad yet?

You should be!

You should be pissed that you’ve bought into the promise of financial freedom and then been taught to be a hobbyist! You should be pissed that amateurs are selling PDF files for multiple times what a well written textbook would cost! You should be mad as hell!

I’m not trying to incite a riot. In fact, some people don’t WANT to turn their blog into a business (e.g. Joel Runyon). I’m trying to warn others because I wish someone would have told me two years ago that blogging is mostly a hobby.

Mostly.

More than a hobby

With few exception, most people in the blogging community are just enthusiastic hobbyists. BUT, there are exceptions.

Dan and Ian – who run a real business with tangible products and employees

Sinclair – who is amazing all around and also makes an awesome living online teaching people how to do real business

Abby Kerr – who uses her real world knowledge gained from owning a retail store to help entrepreneurs

All of these people are members of a much smaller percentage of the blogging community who are doing things online and making a living off of it.

The difference between what they are doing and the thousands of hobbyists who comprise the larger part of the community? Their focus. Business over blogging.

Look at the definition of the two words:

Business: The practice of making one’s living by engaging in commerce

Blogging: Add new material to or regularly update a blog

Notice that only one of those two definitions mentions a financial word (i.e. commerce). The other one is something to keep you busy. The aforementioned people focus on the business.

My confession

I got caught up in the hobby.

My day job (yes, I admit to having one of those…GASP!) makes me a nice chunk of change. Because of this, I didn’t feel the pressure to really push the business side of things.

However, around the beginning of the year, I noticed what I had been doing…or more precisely what I had NOT been doing. My posting frequency decreased when I realized that I had been building a hobby and not a business. I love the connections I’ve made and value them more than I can possibly convey, but that doesn’t change the fact that I had not been hard at work on a business (i.e. the practice of making one’s living by engaging in commerce).

I’ve made a significant number of changes since then and have been hard at work on an actual business. As you might imagine, such a shift requires some hard work and pulls your attention away from things you were once focused.

And THAT is why you have seen so little of me on my own site.

The time for the hobby has ended. It’s time to get down to business.

Out of curiosity, how many of YOU are stuck in the hobby phase?

The Secret Goal

One year ago this month

It had been a year since the mass layoff that changed how I think about the world. I had lurked in the online shadows of obscurity the entire time providing only comments on blogs and a Twitter account as any evidence that I existed. Like all good lifestyle designers, I had read the Tim Ferriss manifesto and was forever infected.

You’ve probably read that story on a hundred blogs by now. So what makes this post any different?

Well, for one, I’m married. If you’ve been following my adventures for a while, you may have already encountered the story where I introduced my wife to this craziness. Also, I have children (three of them). Now granted, in the grand scheme of things, none of this is all that unique (though it DOES seem uncommon for most of the lifestyle design group).

Here’s what makes today’s post a bit different.

In the conversation with my wife that gave way to this whole online experiment, there were some agreements made between the two of us. Yes, I would start a business and a website which would require more of my time while at home (thankfully I’m a night owl so the impact has been minimal). We also decided to immediately begin the expansion of our family, of which Baby David was born roughly 2 months ago.

But what makes this post different is that there was something discussed during our talk that I have never mentioned on this site.

Something very significant to our lives that we had to keep a secret…

Until now.

Freedom

Our secret goal was that we would pay off our consumer debt in my first year online with the intent that my wife could quit her job and stay home with our children.

The last debt payment is this month.

My wife quit last Friday.

Winning.

The very recent past

Friday night was awesome. We went out and celebrated with some close friends of ours and immediately I saw a weight lifted off of my wife’s shoulders. Her desire to stay home to raise our children had been warring with the reality that our consumer debt had kept us prisoner to the template life.

When we got home, I thought back on the past 60 days and realized a lot has happened!

We had a brand new baby boy which also means we have much less sleep than before. I only target about 5-6 hours of sleep a night anyways, so imagine what less sleep looks like to me! Ha!

A month later, I attended my first big event (SXSW) and met a ton of awesome people. Then four days after returning from SXSW, I had surgery that took me out of commission for a few days. Nothing scary or exciting…umbilical hernia repair. (Also, did you know the anesthesia they use sticks with you way longer than just the time of the surgery? Like, easily 4 to 6 weeks of brain cloud? I didn’t know that. I do now!)

Then, of course, there’s the whole “wife quitting” thing as just discussed.

Like I said, a lot has happened. As you may have guessed, this has led to the break that was taken regarding posting.

The break is over.

The future

We have some remaining big goals, many of which I have discussed on this site and some that are new and developing. But we are so ecstatic that this goal has been met and I wanted to share it with you.

I also wanted to share some more changes that are about to occur. These are some plans you’ll see come to fruition very soon.

[Insert evil laugh]

A Touch of Brilliance

A few months ago I was introduced to Matt Gartland (@MattGartland) and we immediately hit it off. Very quickly we realized that our way of looking at the world had some strong commonalities; I align myself with the hero, he aligns himself with the antihero (which is not the villain, by the way, but rather more of the unexpected hero). As we talked more and more, we decided that we wanted, no NEEDED, to embark on a project together. Much discussion ensued.

The two of us have been hard at work over the past few weeks working on something that we are very excited about. In fact, I’d say it was total brilliance!

I would like to announce that our big endeavor is…

Wait. Ya know, I just realized I’ve gotten ahead of myself. It’s still a bit early to reveal what we’re doing. OK, I’ll save that announcement for a bit later. Forget I said anything.

Modified HD

Starting this week, I’m changing how HD will work (no, not that 1080p stuff, I’m referring to Heroic Destiny by its initials).

Before you wonder, it won’t cost you a single hot cent, it WILL be intuitive, and I really hope that it will be way more helpful to you as a reader and fellow business person. It’s something that plays into my larger dreams and I am excited to invite all of you to participate.

And just in case you hang out in the online marketing world, allow me to disarm you. This is not a pre-sell, a pre-launch, or any other thing intended to get you excited so that I can later spring a price on you. You will eventually see some prices from time to time with this experiment, but will have the option to participate entirely FREE.

Curious? (Now THAT is intentional.)

And yes, there may be some of my trademark animal present in these little experiments.

Wrap-up

For you skimmers, here’s what I just said:

Lifestyle design virus

Infected

Goals

Big secret

Business

Website

Baby boy

SXSW

Surgery

Debt paid

WIFE QUIT HER JOB!!! <– Big one here!

Celebration

Freedom

Winning

Break over

Brilliance

Changes in HD

Unicorns

And with that, I now return you to our regularly schedule programming.

My new business cards for handing out at SXSW. (Yes, my number is correct on the real one)

One year ago

One year ago I was sitting at a desk and watching as all the shiny happy people Tweeted about their grand adventures at SXSW (South by Southwest). I remember looking longingly at my computer screen and wishing I was there with all of the magics.

It was at that point that I turned to the two guys that worked with me and said “I’m going to be there next year.”

It’s next year.

I’ll be there tomorrow!

Make your goals statements

There was no hesitation in my voice when I said I’d be at SXSW. There was no “I hope” or “I’d like to”.

My goal was a statement. Aside from God Himself, nothing was stopping me from going.

Are you setting YOUR goals with the same intensity? Are you deciding how YOUR life will go?

Or are you letting your raft float down the river wherever it takes you?

SXSW

If you ARE going to SXSW this year, holler at me! I’ll have Twitter (@DavidCrandall) going on my phone as well as checking in and out of FourSquare (find me here). I’ll also be attending the Men with Pens big reveal of James Chartrand which will have a ton of fun people at it.

I’d love to meet as many people as possible so let me know if you are there.

Are YOU an expert?

Our society has told us to focus on being well-rounded. But in a world where the search engines at our fingertips can tell us more than any well-rounded individual, we need focused experts! See how three hypothetical people measure up in the world of experts and well-rounded individuals and what it costs them (and us) in this satirical look at how we evaluate people.

What’s inside:

A look at three combinations of school grades and how those might play out in the real world:

How we are discouraging future experts

How we reward mediocrity

Why you might seek to be tutored by a failure

Identify YOUR expertise

Start thinking about how to be the expert in your life

Excerpt

Johnny becomes an adult, finds the internet, and starts studying Science again. He scribbles formulas in hundreds of notebooks all over his apartment. In one notebook is an outline for cold fusion. In another, the solution to the fossil fuel problem. In a larger notebook, he has figured out how to create the DNA for a unicorn and bring one to life. A unicorn. A REAL LIVE UNICORN! Not some stupid ass horse with a horn stuck on it, but a unicorn that vomits rainbows, grants wishes, and makes Starburst jellybeans rain from the sky! He does that!

The young prince arrives tomorrow

I have been writing a lot about kingdoms lately. You should know that I view myself as royalty in mine. I’m not a arbitrary character or a filler role. I am the king.

Tomorrow, the prince arrives.

My wife (the queen) and I are making the final preparations as we spend our last day as parents of only two children.

I’m so excited that I couldn’t help but write about this today.

I’ve waited so long

I love my daughters Ella and Eden. I love them so much that I view them as these little magical creatures who live in my house. God knew what He was doing when he gave me daughters first.

But I can’t tell you how long I’ve wanted a son.

Even before being married I often thought about the weight of being the father of someone who would grow into a man. What successes in my life would I hope that he would share? What failures would I warn him to avoid? What things would I teach him? What would he teach me?

I’ve waited so long.

I remember with both of my daughters that I was the first person to kiss them. The first person that ever kissed them! How amazing is that?!

I can’t wait to hold my son David tomorrow in my arms. To be the first person to kiss him. To hold him. I can’t wait to whisper to him and tell him how long I’ve waited for him. How much I love him!

The young prince is coming.

Children

I’ve mentioned often on this blog and in interviews that I feel like somewhat of an anomaly in the Lifestyle Design niche since I am not only married, but have children.

Everyone writes about their adventures in Asia, outsourcing their tasks, living off of dollars and paying in rupees. We read about monetizing and optimizing.

But let me tell you a little about the adventure that is parenting.

My wife and I have been given the awesome responsibility of molding another human being! And not just one, but multiple humans. Lifestyle design? We are literally creating the foundation of thought that will carry these people throughout their lifetime. Their very names were given to them by us!

A lot of bloggers I admire are moving towards making an impact in people’s lives. They hope to raise money or provide support for people to make a better living. I love that and find myself drawing nearer to these types of people.

Why? Because as a parent, I absolutely impact people’s lives. My daughters will look to me for years as the primary man in their life. Even when they choose someone else to fill that role, I know that I’ll still have an impact. My son will form his first thoughts of being a man based on my words and actions.

It is humbling and bigger than anything you can possibly imagine if you have not felt it yourself.

My “why”

I am conscious of this impact that I will have on my children. That is the reason that I want to provide the best possible life for them. I want to show them that they have been created in the very image of something magnificent. I want them to see things early on that it has taken me decades to discover.

I want my children to be free.

Free of the restraints we put on ourselves. On each other. Free to pursue that which is bigger than what their peers think is possible. Free to live the amazing adventure that they were born into.

Tomorrow my long awaited son makes his debut appearance on planet Earth. As his eyes open to light for the first time and he draws those first few breaths, his adventure will begin.

I wanted to share this excitement with you.

NOTICE:

I will likely be Tweeting and updating Facebook like crazy tomorrow. My wife and I are even considering doing a little Ustream action for family members who can’t be in town (nothing freaky, just us waiting the hours before…no birthing, I promise!!!) We did this with the birth of our daughters and loved being able to interact with family and friends in a situation where they obviously could not all be sitting with us waiting for that moment. Also, you should be forewarned that I may post a ton of pictures. Haha!

I invite anyone who sees the Tweets, Facebook updates, or Ustream invitation to join in and participate.

Wish us luck!

Our kingdoms lie in ruin. (source: jimmyharris)

The reason for the story

Gotham is overrun by criminals. Narnia is covered in snow and the White Witch reigns. The Dark Lord has sent out the Nine Riders in search of the One Ring. The galaxy bows in fear of Darth Vadar and his Death Star. Bowser has the Princess. The Covenant has invaded Earth.

The kingdom is in ruins.

We are led to suppose that prior to “once upon a time’, things were “happily ever before”. Stories are told because something happened to change that “happily ever before”. Something bad happened and threatened the kingdom.

The story is told because of the ruined kingdom. Without a kingdom in ruin, there is no need for heroic deeds.

Our kingdom

Just like Gotham, Narnia, Middle Earth, and the rest of my examples, our kingdom is threatened.

On a global scale our kingdom experiences wars and riots outside of our control. We are grieved by ecological disasters such as mass fires and months long oil spills. Sickness and disease make nightly appearances in our news broadcasts. We hurt each other with murder, rape, theft, and unknown other ways.

The global kingdom is a wreck.

The smaller kingdoms are often little better. Job loss, recessions, inflation, mortgages, debt. Overeating, under-eating. Poverty, hoarding. Death, suicide, loneliness.

I’m not a pessimist, but the truth of the matter is that most people are not living happily ever after.

We are drawn to these stories for yet another commonality they all share.

The Rescue

We know the names of Batman, Aslan, Frodo, Luke Skywalker, Mario, and the Master Chief for a reason. When things were darkest, they appeared.

When the kingdom was in ruins, their remarkable stories took center stage.

Their actions are remarkable because of what occurred as a result of them. Good defeated evil. Light conquered darkness. The innocent were protected.

This story resonates with us because our story requires a rescue too.

Unfortunately, many will choose to ignore this.

The wisdom of Morpheus

When we encounter Morpheus for the first time, nearly every member of the human race is enslaved, serving as a battery to robotic overlords. He is one of only a small remnant of free people who remain at the center of the planet. Earth lies in utter devastation.

The kingdom has fallen.

Yet Mr. Thomas A. Anderson, like the majority of civilization, is oblivious to the full gravity of the situation. He feels something tugging at him to look beyond what his peers do, yet he can’t put a finger on it. He only knows a name.

Consider the speech that Morpheus gives as he begins to explain the fallen kingdom they are standing in:

The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work…when you go to church…when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else you were born into bondage. Into a prison that you cannot taste or see or touch. A prison for your mind.

Oh that the Matrix existed only in the movies.

You were born into bondage

Our Matrix is the Template Life.

Nearly every member of our society has been infected with the belief that their duty is to live the just like the person next door to them. We are trained to work harder and make more money to feed our corporate and governmental overlords. Our lives lie in ruin as we give our best years to the machine in hopes that one day we can enjoy freedom with our remaining frail bodies.

We sacrifice our families for a better rating on annual evaluations in hopes of more money. We work long hours to climb the corporate ladder so that we can be one rung above the next guy.

For large portions of the year, we leave before the sun comes up and arrive at home long after it has set. Our children are raised by people we pay to play parent while we spend our lives with people that aren’t our families.

This is the reason we are drawn to the rescue…because we require one too

What will YOU choose?

I’m not saying that the corporate world is our robotic overlord. I AM saying that the numbness we operate under is no different than the oblivious state Neo was kept in before his rescue.

We are slaves to the status quo. We have handed our freedom of thought over to others so that we can enjoy relaxed lives. Our overlords, not the result of war, are of our own making. Our society is complacent and non-confrontational. We continue to tolerate that which we don’t approve of because the alternative requires intentionality. It requires we be uncomfortable.

The kingdom is in ruin and we’ve chosen to sleep right through it.

The question then is whether or not you will swallow the template life so that you can remain in bed and believe whatever you want?

Or will you choose a different path?

Thankfully, some of you already have.
