Sunday morning,just before midnight,I stepped out of my door and realized it was colder than I expected.

This ride had two purposes.One was to complete at least one Iron Butt Association ride and two was to deliver a vintage Airbrushed Motley Crue denim jacket I got in high school to Lauren at Antique Archeology of American Pickers fame in Nashville ,TN.

I thought it was going to be around 50-55 degrees,turns out it was 42 degrees.I already had almost everything on my 2003 Honda Shadow Spirit 1100cc ready to go.My two bags that carried my tools for minor repairs,a www.cyclepump.com ,and my GoPro cameras .I also had a tankbag that carried my motorcycle paperwork,smartphone,and www.ironbutt.com log as I had to keep track of my stops.Of course,I also had water.

The motorcycle is in good working order,however,new tires were put on last August and in Sept,the rear tire got something in it and I had to plug it.Rather than throw away money,I've been riding it with the tire plugged and I rode it with the tire plugged on this trip.With no problems.

I had two sweatshirts ,Carhartt cover-alls and my leather jacket to keep me warm.I wore nothing but skate shoes.I don't have motorcycle boots.My helmet over a nylon facemask that works,sort of,but mostly causes my helmet glass to fog when I breathe.My gloves were rated for about 40 degrees,but constant air eventually found it's way through and numbed my hands.

I got to the Wawa Gas Station in Wyomissing PA(which is also my end point) ,shot part of my video log and topped off the gas to obtain my receipt to start the clock in this adventure.

The receipt started my clock at 12:50a EST but I left about 1:10A EST and rode

off into the darkness.There were late night partiers in the gas station parking lot looking at me like I was the idiot,talking into a camera,but almost no one on the road when I left.

The accuweather app said it was going to be about 50-55 degrees out,but as a cruised along at highway speed,I quickly realized it was colder.My feet were freakin' freezing.I was only wearing sneakers.I got to Shippensburg PA for gas at 2:52a,cruised along I81 South with no problems,keeping an eye out for deer.I was really worried about deer.
At 4:59a I got gas again at Love's Truckstop in Toms Brook VA,a place I used to fuel when i delivered brand new Mack Trucks.I looked around ,but no luck,they didn't sell electric,or even insulated socks.I rode across the street,but they didn't sell them either.
I continued on,hoping that it would soon warm to a more manageable temperature.it did not until much later.Even when I got to Natural Bridge VA a little after 7:00a and stopped for fuel, it was still cold as hell.(I imagine hell being a frozen wasteland.)
It was still cold and they didn't sell thermal socks either.

I left Natural Bridge,riding on Route 11,but wasn't able to see the Natural Bridge and I didn't have time to stop.My next fuel stop was the TravelCenters of America in Wytheville VA,but between Natural Bridge and there,the deer decided to declare war on all drivers with some kamikaze raids. I had only just missed one deer as he crossed left to right when two more were standing on the right,as I ripped by at 70mph,one of them ,made a move ,like he didn't no which way to go,then,and I swear to this,he made a disappointed face when he realized he wasn't going to get me.Like he was going to lose a bet,or his commanding officer was going to throw him in the stockade for retreating.I kid you not.
I got to Wytheville safely and fueled,then ate at Subway for breakfast as I caught up on the paperwork needed for the Iron Butt Ride certification.I'd rather do it as I go then have to do all that tedious work at one time after I was done.

The ride from Wytheville VA to Nashville TN is about 362 miles and was pretty uneventful.No real traffic,little heavy around cities,but not bad,and the speed limit is 70 mph,so I was cruising along great.

I got to Antique Archaeology at 4:10p CST ,three and a half hours later than I expected.They closed at 5p on a Sunday.I don't know where the time went,it felt I was moving almost non stop,but all the little stops and breaks added up.

I parked right in front and went inside.Unfortunately,I missed the live music and it was semi crowded,but Lauren saw me from behind the counter.I looked around while she took care of other customers.

The store is smaller than I thought it would be,and there wasn't many antiques and "picks" as I had expected.I live near Adamstown PA and the antiques are packed into the stores.
Some items were not for sale.There was a vintage leather jacket I liked,but it was marked as Mike Wolfe's personal collection.I really liked it a lot too. I didn't have the money that day to purchase any of the things I liked were listed at and even if I did,I was on a motorcycle,couldn't bring it home anyways.

Shopping while traveling on a motorcycle is both a blessing and a curse when one sees something they would like to buy.

I was looking around and was pondering if it would be also profitable for them to get more space in the historic Marathon Motor Works building where the store is,create a museum and charge admission.(If you need a curator,Mike,I am available.)

Lauren saw my airbrushed Motley Crue jacket when I posted it on Instagram and asked if it was for sale.It wasn't,but I said make an offer and she did.It really was never going to fit me ever again.I decided I didn't want it to be stuffed in a closet,but it also had sentimental value as it was a gift and this is and always will be my favorite band, so it had to go to someone who would appreciate it.

When I took it out of the bag,I could see her eyes light up and I knew this was the right person.Although,the money wasn't important,she paid me.I was so happy to see her as excited about it as I was when it was given to me in 1990.

Visit the shop,you'll never meet a nicer person than Lauren.She's very cool rocker chick,that,in my opinion ,should have more air time on American Pickers ...I've said that even before meeting her,though.

I also had a missed opportunity,of meeting another celebrity,local,but most likely soon to be international country music star.

Lillie Syracuse ,a country music singer who has sang on many stages around Tennessee including playing live at Antique Archaeology ,where she is also a sales associate. Now I had seen her videos on YouTube last summer ,before I had even thought of this or knew much about her.I am even subscribed since last year to Lillie's YouTube Channel ......and I had her use my phone to take the pic of Lauren and I.....then I asked her to do it again because she blurred it. I didn't realize it until a few days later,that not only did I miss an opportunity to properly meet her because,even though I've seen her videos,I didn't make the connection,I also had her take that photo for me. Duh! Idiot!

I left after 5pm and rode back the way I came on I40,another uneventful ride with food and gas stops along the way.There was a semi truck/pickup truck accident blocking the left lane right before the I40/I81 split.It looked like the pickup truck tried to change lanes and put himself in the trailer tires.Pieces of Chevy everywhere.I started to feel tired,but not too bad until I got to White Pine TN and fueled there for the end of my Saddlesore1000 at just after 11:00p .I hung around and stretched my legs,then got moving,since I was way behind the time I set for myself.

I "hit the wall" at about 23 hours, when I hit 1008 miles for the Saddlesore1000.I'm just not cut out for staying awake like I used to be.Honestly,I used to drive a truck straight to CA,make the delivery,sleep for a few hours,then sit on Venice beach until my log caught up.I can't do that stuff anymore.
I used to get that numbing pain in my lower back from the seat and sitting,but this is the first time I wore Carhartt cover alls over top everything for a longer ride other than to work in winter time and they were the perfect thickness for taking the vibration and I had no pain at all when i was done.
I have no throttle lock,so at one point,my wrist hurt so bad,I shoved my weight against my elbow/arm to keep moving.
During the night,I stayed behind cars or trucks as blockers for deer,this one car I ran behind for 70 miles,I think he was a high functioning drunk driver as he kept slowing down to 50 mph and back up to 60 even though it was a 70mph.
It dropped to 32 and my hands didn't function right,I couldn't always pull the clutch or brake fast enough and couldn't always coordinate them.

out of my bag here,I was too tired and didn't notice,so someone has a new gauge now.

I stopped for breakfast,because I was really feeling tired to the point of nodding off,at the Waffle House in Troutville VA around 4:10a.I'm not sure if it was the food or me just being awake and tired,but it didn't sit well after eating there.The night was rough,with being real tired and it being real dark out,plus the 32 degrees affecting my motor skills,I was thinking it's time to quit.I should have,but I didn't,but there were some moments that almost became FUBAR.

It was work to keep moving,I was falling asleep and I had to talk to myself,to stay awake.Just talking,pointless talking to just try to stay awake.Sometimes yelling....
It finally started to get light out,but not warm yet.More vehicles were on the road and I had to pay close attention.Being tired and freezing really does affect one's abilities to do things to try to avoid causing accident.

End mileage and time

I was nearing the end of this long ,tiring,but awesome journey.I stopped a few more times for breaks and gas and my second to last stop was in Mechanicsburg ,PA. I filled the tank and got rolling as my time counted down.
I did have one issue,probably because I was tired and not thinking.I had to stop and look at my phone at the intersection of I81 and I83 to figure out which way to go.After consulting Google maps on my phone (I knew the way,just had a moment where I was confused due to lack of sleep)I pulled out onto the highway as a Prius cut in front of me with a flat tire on his way to the shoulder.It was a close call and I wish I had my GoPro on,it would've been an interesting video.
I made it to the end point with less than an hour to spare.It should have been faster,but I did a lot of stopping and a lot of time lost in Nashville. I am disappointed in my time,but I still made it.

It was a great experience,one that was on my bucket list since 2010.I wouldn't say it was life changing or life altering,but riding on a motorcycle,alone,through the darkness,nothing and nobody around,it does give you time to think.To reflect.I won't go into details,except to say I have no regrets,save one,and that's getting into my current chosen "career",but that is hardly a secret. I need to make a change and get out of that.Soon.Now.

I knew I was doing a timed ride,but when I was out there cruising alone,I know this is how I want to live.Traveling.Riding from place to place on no one's clock.I'm looking around in the pitch black along I-81,no headlights,no streetlamps ,just the occasional eye shine of an animal among the trees along the road hunting for dinner.For those 35 hours I was who I want to be.I was that person.There was no dead end job,there was no house that needs repairs or POS car that needs constant attention.There were no people I have to pretend to like to make life(mostly at work) easier.No fake conversations.

No bullshit

Just me,the bike,and the road.

Maybe it was a life changing experience.

The Great Bull Run

June 7th 2014,I'll be running with the bulls at The Great Bull Run at Maple Grove Raceway .I have told a few people about it and have posted on social media about it,sharing pictures from other bull run events.I have gotten from more than a couple people the usual animal cruelty spiel.

Fact is,I would not being doing this if they presented it the same way they do in Spain.

The bulls are running much less than most people run with there dog in the park and they are usually tethered a leash! Cows and bulls,horses too,are frequently running ,on their own in fields for longer than these bulls will run.Don't believe me?Just take a ride through any farmland.There is even video of horses actually playing in the snow.

Everyone of those that gave me a hard time about doing this bull run are meat eaters.Their Facebook pages have also shown fishing and hunting photos.I am not knocking that at all.I eat meat and I do a lot of fishing.

I've seen the posts about great seafood dinners.Steamed clams,lobster.You know how you steam clams,oysters,crab and lobster,right?

You boil a pot of water,then put the shellfish in the boiling water.Alive.

And it's cruel for a bull to run in a field!?

I've even seen tweets and status updates about taking out rats in their house through poison or traditional traps. but to say that it is cruel for a bull,who does it on his own like any other animal,to run with humans ,much less in size and weight then him is hypocrisy.These bulls will enjoy peaceful grazing for hours,run for 3 minutes, then go back to that afterwards.Maybe they'll have to deal with people taking photos.

There is no animal cruelty,just a possible self inflicted cruelty by choice on the human's part.

I would not be doing this if i thought a bull,or any animal was being hurt just to indulge our stupidity..This is not Spain and to be told that it is by people who hunt or fish or eat meat or run their dog the same miles they do...or walk their dog the same distances they do is hypocrisy.

These bulls will run for a few minutes with some stupid humans,then go back to their fields with a little bit of a work out.

So, I hope you'll come out and watch, or watch the video from the bull run,that will inevitably be uploaded to YouTube.I will have two GoPro cameras,so their will be plenty of video.

Also,there will be a Tomato Royale a battle with thousands and thousands of pounds of tomatoes.My son,Collin, will also be doing that part of it.

MIley Cyrus Didn't Make History at the Music Awards

I read,on Twitter and other social media that Miley Cyrus made history at the music awards with that idiot Robin Thicke and is making history with her performances. That's what Robin said to her before they went on stage,I'd have to say I disagree and say that she is doing nothing original and definitely not making history in the annals of music.

I also will go even further and say,while interesting, Lady GaGa isn't making history either.The meat dress was cool(I mean come on,it IS meat!),and I do like her music and she definitely has a certain style.

She is following in the footsteps of women before her.Miley too,like Madonna and Britney Spears and Cyndi Lauper who all had their own style,but weren't all that original either.No groundbreaking,performances.
I like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper and in fact have seen both live in concert many years ago.

I'd like to introduce you to another woman in entertainment who made history by "shocking" the masses.

Whom I think,for the time,pushed the envelope far more than Madonna or Miley or Lady Gaga do for their time.

Meet Hattie Helen Gould Beck or Sally Rand,which was the stage name Cecil B. DeMille gave her.Which was inspired by a Rand McNally Atlas. She started out young on stage,studied drama and ballet and eventually moved to Hollywood and starred in silent films and some theater.When sound films were developed,she became a dancer.The reason was is that she sometimes spoke with a lisp and she thought "talkies" would end her career.

She developed the fan dance which she performed with great success at the Paramount Club in Chicago.

In 1933 at the World's Fair,titled Century of Progress in Chicago,she was arrested four times in a single day for indecent exposure for doing her famous fan dance and riding a white horse on the streets of Chicago while giving the appearance of nudity.

Sally Rand also was arrested a fifth time at the Fair, along with Max Factor Sr,when he used his new makeup formulated for Hollywood films to paint her entire body.Seems familiar, copied today doesn't it?

This got her arrested in 1933.

Even though she was arrested five times at the 1933 World's Fair,the promoters couldn't deny the draw.It was a very popular show,which actually saved the fair from financial ruin and the promoters convinced the judge to let her keep working.

She also came up with and developed the Bubble Dance,because of performing outside and having to deal with the wind.

Sally Rand was arrested again in 1946 by six police officers in the audience as she danced, seemingly nude, in silhouette behind a large white fan; while on trial, the judge granted her immunity should she be arrested for the same offense while on trial; however she was arrested during a night of the trial while performing her act, despite her immunity and the fact that she was wearing long underwear and a note that read "CENSORED. S.F.P.D." while performing that time. In an unusual move, the judge viewed her performance at the Savoy and cleared her of all charges after deeming that "anyone who could find something lewd about the dance as she puts it on has to have a perverted idea of morals"

Sally Rand died on Aug 31 1979 in California of Congestive Heart Failure in the hospital and by then she was very far in debt. Sammy Davis Jr actually wrote a $10,000 check and covered her expenses.

Sally Rand may seem tame by today's standards,or maybe not all that different,really if you look at it.I do believe there is a difference between Miley Cyrus and her.Sally had class while Miley just seems crude,but nothing really original that hasn't been done already.

Certainly not history making.

Strange Dreams

It's my first post of the New Year and it's not about motorcycles. I had this strange dream last night.I was driving an 18 wheeler, with someone,I don't know who,that got me this job.We ended at this mansion.I put the truck where they told me and we got out.I really didn't know what I was hauling,but it turned out to be illegal,either unregistered guns or drugs.In my still trying to wake up haze,I try to remember. I am leaning towards drugs. People there had me park this truck by a sinkhole.I don't know why there was a sinkhole there in this huge yard.The owner or person who lives there comes outside to the truck.He expresses his anger at this sinkhole in the yard. I suggest he turn it into a swimming pool.He just turns and walks away. Now things are a little blurry here,but more people show up to unload the truck,I presume.But the next thing I remember,the shooting starts.A shootout ensues and me and the guy I drove in with run for cover.He starts shooting back and I yell "Hey,I need a gun!" I duck out from behind the car with the .38 revolver he tossed to me.(I distinctly remember it being a snub nose .38 revolver).I immediately feel something sting on my neck as I fire back one shot and hit this guy that was pointing a rifle at me(I don't remember which kind).He goes down,I duck back behind the car and stay there.The battle slows down and the people that I brought the truck to have won. . The next thing I remember is lining up with everyone else involved.I don't know why,either to be paid,or to find out the next part of the job. As I am waiting in line with the guy who rode with me in the truck,I put my hand to my neck and notice the pain .I've been shot, apparently. I ask my friend if "this can get me out of the rest of the job?" He says "I'm not sure,ask when we get up to the front of the line." I'm bleeding,but not nearly as much as I should have been considering a bullet lodged in my neck. We get to the table and seated next to the table, in chairs like they are at an outdoor wedding,are a bunch of criminal types I recognize,but don't know how or why I recognize. I say "Can I can go home early since I've been injured?" The guy says "Yeah,you can go,we don't need drivers today,but you can not go to the hospital" He hands me a wad of cash and gives me an address of a discreet veterinarian.

I woke up and that is all I remember. Without a doubt,this is on the list of the weirdest dreams I have ever had.Just never thought about getting them written down until now. Have you had any weird dreams you remember?

Paul Walker's Death and How It Affected My Life

As you all know by now,Paul Walker and his friend Roger Rodas died in a Porsche Carerra GT they that they owned together.Paul's funeral is today,so he can be laid to rest in a private event for family and friends.Always Evolving were driving while attending a charity event at their garage ,

I'm not going to go into all the details ,you can look that up yourself,this blog is about how it got me thinking about my life and what I've been doing. I see Paul and his success,not with jealousy,he was a good person who did a lot of great things with his success and money,including his charity ,Reach Out World Wide .
Seeing his life and how he lived it,I feel that up until this point,I've been wasting mine.I have a dead end go nowhere job.I don't do things I'd like to do nearly as much.I want to move to the Outer Banks NC as I feel that is my home and I was born in the wrong place.I would like to get out fishing more and motorcycle traveling but just don't have the money or the ambition.I work way too many hours for pay that is too low,as does my ole lady.However,she likes her job a bit more than I do.I despise mine,it's a bottomless pit of hate for this job.

The problem is,I just don't know how to get out of this bad career choice.I don't want to be rich,although,that would be nice,I just want to be happy.I want to enjoy doing something.I want to like the people I work for and with.One also gets "pigeon-holed" in this job.Too many times I've talked to new employers and they say "We don't have a position in your field" and I'm thinking "What field?I drive a truck,but that's not the only thing I can do,did you even read my application and resume?"
The other part of how this got me thinking is ,while his death came way too soon and is a tragedy.For many reasons that don't include his film career,he and Roger died with a smile on their faces.They died doing something they loved.When it's my time,I want to go out the same way,doing something I love.I don't want to die, in my sleep, on the couch, in front of the TV.I want to go out doing something I enjoyed.I don't spend enough time doing things I love and that is my fault. I've lost some ambition and the money and time isn't there because of the job and my laziness in working to get out of that and into something I would enjoy.

I just don't know where to go from here.

Paul Walker was a good actor,but an even better person.I enjoy his films,but I really connected with him because of his love of the ocean and his desire to become a Marine Biologist , which was his major in college.He did much for people,but he also was a supporter of shark protection and conservation as well. The First Ride by A.H. Rosenberg - A Book Review

    I just finished reading The First Ride written by A.H. Rosenberg. It is a true story from the experiences of the author himself.He is a rock climber and has traveled before and therefore isn't afraid to try new things.This story is an unapologetic look at traveling by motorcycle.He tells it exactly as it happens and does not sugarcoat anything.
     When his friend,Nick, asked him to go on a multiple country ride to Panama with him and two other friends,he is a little hesitant,as he has never ridden a motorcycle,nor does he even own one.His friend,lends him a bike,he takes the safety course and practices for six months before the trip.For all intents and purposes,he is still a new rider,and his adventure begins the moment he picks up the bike at his friend's house and rides it home.
     I won't give any specifics away,but his story describes the highs and lows of being a novice rider.He writes in great detail what it is like,as a new rider,to not only go on an extensive road trip through 7 countries,but also what it is like to travel with three other experienced motorcyclists.he talks about trying to keep up with them, the arguments,and especially the danger of not "riding your own ride". He tries to keep up with his traveling companions as they take risks he isn't experienced enough to do yet,as well as some risks no rider should take,no matter how experienced.
     He almost is killed multiple times as he takes this "crash course" in motorcycling,but he prevails to tell his exciting story.

     I highly recommend this book to any motorcyclist,non motorcyclists,adventurer, or armchair adventurer.I guarantee you won't be able to put it down.After I finished his story,thought about the first time I rode amotorcycle,not as a kid on my Dad's Harley,but as my own rider,back in 2001.I didn't take the adventurous trip the author did,but I was scared for the longest time as I learned how to be safe.I have been on many trips as far as Atlanta and the Outer Banks.It is also my main mode of transportation,mostly in the summer as I just don't want to deal with the cold anymore at 3am.I used to though.
   I want to take a summer long or even year long motorcycling trip but the money is a factor.After reading this book, it both scared me and excited me to travel through multiple countries on a motorcycle.I also am not a big fan of group riding because of many reasons,the author,Alex,found out for himself in his tale.I also know ,though,I would never want to travel the countries he did alone.This book has reiterated that it is important to have like minded and similar skilled riders in your group.

This book spoke to me and brought out a wide range of emotions about motorcycling and what it means to me.

      The First Ride by A.H.Rosenberg is a must read.You will not be able to put it down.I hope you will buy it,not only to share in his adventure,but to support indie authors as well.

Hurricane Sandy

This blog is coming a bit late but right before Halloween ,Hurricane Sandy came north up the east coast,hitting the Outer Banks NC yet again roughly a year after Hurricane Irene hit it.They have,yet again, a lot of work to do to clean up the sand,rebuild sand dunes,houses,and the only road in or out,highway 12. Unfodtunately, they have been largely overlooked by mainstream media.People who know me,know I have a passionate love for the Outer Banks almost borderline obsession.I am okay with that.My favorite fishing pier,the Rodanthe Fishing Pier has lost about 50 feet off the end of the pier.They were going to remodel anyways,but now they have to change the design a little bit to offset cost to extra repairs.
New York and New Jersey also got hit hard in some places along the cost. here,in my part of Pennsylvania, we didn't get it as bad.We lost power for 2 days,and a power line pole,but that is about it.I have some photos of our little bit of damage,as well as a short video of some flooding of a nearby stream.

As you can see,we got lucky.As I've said I love the Outer Banks of NC.I also have a fondness of NYC as well as some people I consider friends living there,a couple in particular in lower Manhattan.They are all okay and everyone I know in both Hatteras and NYC have great positive attitudes.

Zippo/Case Knives Museum and Factory

July 22 2012,we got up at about 530a for the purpose of riding out to Bradford PA.The intent was to visit the Zippo Lighter/Case Knives Factory and Museum and purchase a lighter right from the factory where it is made in Bradford,Pennsylvania.

    I know I can purchase a Zippo Lighter at the local Walmart but what is the fun in that?.
The ride up was fairly uneventful,with some stops for food and gas.Once one gets off the highway,the scenery is really nice.We saw some deer in the woods alongside the highway
Riding on 219N North to Bradford is a scenic ride and I recommend everyone add it to their motorcycling trip wish list.It isn't really twisty,but it is a nice ride.Along the way,we passed a pet cemetery,complete with headstones.I didn't get a picture,but it was a definitely an interesting sight.
   This is roughly the route we took,the beginning leg of the trip,we avoided the PATP but on the way home,in the interest of time,we took the Turnpike.We got home around 730p and with the stopping for breaks,gas,food, and the museum visit,it was about 13 and a half hours,568 miles round trip.

Old Glow'ry

When one goes into the front door of this place,you walk into the store and head immediately to the back where the museum entrance is located.You are greeted by the sculpture and flag called Old Glow'ry.That flag is entirely created out of over 300 Zippos.The photo doesn't do it justice.You must visit this for yourself.
Turn right and you will head into a history buff's mecca of Zippo history of ad posters,and antique Zippos.There is entire sections of vintage posters of yesteryear.There is a section dedicated Zippos used in war,including lighters that have saved a soldier's life by taking the bullet.There is a section dedicated to movies that Zippo has starred in such as Die Hard,JFK,many many more,and more recently,the hit TV show The Walking Dead .

I love the Zippo lighter because it is a quality American made product.I am not a smoker,but I always have one with me.In my opinion,everyone should carry one,(along with a Swiss Army Knife).In 1995,we drove up to the factory,and I had bought one on that trip.I had since lost it for many years,and I thought it was about time I got another one.

Just recently,we found my original Zippo in a box in the back of the closet.It sits on my shelf now,but it does still work.It had an Outer Banks NC theme,of course,since that is my favorite place on earth.

The ride home was also uneventful.We stopped at a Sheetz for gas and some cheap food.While we sat there and rested,a real life Motorcycle Club was at the other end of the parking spaces.They had a guy in a green Jeep blocked in ,but he wasn't going to say anything.There was also a pick up truck with a garage built,but very cool chopper in the back.Apparently,it had broken down.He was also blocking the lot.Eventually there were a lot of man hugs and they took off in along "bike train" down the road.

Pilgrimage to Motorcyclepedia Museum

I opened the front door and looked out to overcast skies about 730a on July 3 2011 and what looked like rain that had just passed.The wife,even though she has a fractured rib, and I decided we were going to ride the motorcycle up to Newburgh NY (again) to visit Mikey Teutul's Wolfgang Art Gallery and Motorcyclepedia Museum . We did NOT stop at Orange County Choppers ,but we made a quick drive by at Paul Jr Designs .
We decided to go on the trip because it looked like the rain had passed.It did not. We cruised up 222N to 100N to 22N and 33E with no problems.We hit the exit at Wind Gap PA as it started to come down heavily.We pulled into the McDonald's at about 900a and had breakfast and waited for the rain to stop.We waited until about 1015a and the rain did stop,so we took off to our destination.Fifteen minutes later it started coming down hard again with no break in the downpour.

We just kept going,soaking up the water as we made our way onto 80E and 209N through Delaware Water Gap. As we cruised in the rain through the forest,other die hard motorcyclists passed us headed south.My RAF style perscription goggles kept fogging up and I could barely see.I kept repositioning my head so I could see through a clear spot on my goggles. It was a chaotic ride,but we made it to a gas station in Matamoras,PA.
We pulled into the pump and the wife,Kelly, got off as did I to stretch our legs,and to discuss if we should continue. Our clothes were thorughly soaked through and our leather jackets will have taken on 8lbs of water at the end of the day,or so it felt.

It was still pouring at this point but we decided to keep rolling since we were more then halfway there and already wet.We go by a minimalist code so we rarely pack alot to bring on a trip and we don't even own raingear.

So,we head back out into the rain for a few miles on 209 N and turn left onto I87 E.The rain,of course does not let up,but we ride at 70mph into it like it's nothing.Rain is spraying off our tires,dripping off the fenders.It's found a way in and is running down the front of my leather jacket now,creating a wet stripe down the center of my T shirt.Our pants and shoes are completely soaked through.

We get off at exit 4W and head north on 17 W to 211 E and ride the last soggy 9 miles

to Mikey Teutul's Art Gallery.We turn into this unassuming street and there is the art gallery on the left between some other businesses,in a small, one story building.We park in the lot across the street,with only one other car occupying a space and walk across into the strange world of Mikey's mind. Unfortunetly,I did not get the curator's name,but she was extremely nice and helpful.She explained which was Mikey's art and which was art created by other local artists.

It is definitly interesting although I don't really understand all of it.She told us Mikey comes in and works whenever and doesn't really have a schedule.He was at the gallery the day before for a while.He also has a studio at his house and at his brother's shop.So,we didn't get to meet him.Perhaps next time.

We say goodbye and walk out into the rain like it's nothing,get on the bike and take a couple short side roads to Route 17K and turn right for Newburg,NY.It's already 200p,so we skip Orange County Choppers and drive right by,turn left on route 300 and stop at Walmart so the wife can buy dry jeans.

We then get back on 17K and ride into the town of Newburg,which sort of looks like downtown Reading PA....yeah really,I know.... but,most times,off the beaten path, in the most unexpected places,away from the mainstream,are the best places to visit. I am increasingly getting away from mainstream everything,although I hope this museum gains popularity and is around for a very longtime,forever.

We make a right onto Lake St and about a mile down on the right is a the Motorcyclepedia Museum in an unassuming building that used to be a lumberyard/hardware store.One would drive right by it if one wasn't looking for it.We almost missed the driveway.

We park,walk in the door and are greeted by three Arlen Ness choppers.We pay the more then fair $10.00 admission fee per person and are greeted with warm and friendly staff.He allows us to leave our helmets and jackets,wet and dripping,in the lobby at the front door.The majority of the staff are volunteers.If I lived closer,I would most definitly put in time here as a volunteer.

I could go on and describe what you'll see,but I will just post some pictures and video to give you a small part of what you'll see here.

     We left the museum at 445p in light rain,on and off,it rained on the ride back.We stopped in Matamoras for Dollar Menu Dinner at Wendy's and then headed back down 209S. In Delaware Water Gap, we saw a young deer eating alongside the road.The experience of that is enhanced on a motorcycle.It is like we were up close.One can't get that in a cage on four wheels.
      We did about 90 miles to Allentown PA and got gas,headed the rest of the way home.
      We had aching muscles all over from being wet all day.We wouldn't change a thing.We didn't regret not taking the car.Riding a motorcycle is an experience that you can't get in a box on wheels with canned air,what you do getis a FALSE sense of safety. It was a great ride and a great destination. I highly recommend Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburg NY.We will be going back again,possibly in November,when the original owner of the Wall of Death will be there to ride the wall.This time we will take the car and let the kids experience a great and historical museum and I would hope they learn,as I did, the important part motorcycles play in American,and World history. You don't have to ride a motorcycle to experience Motorcyclepedia,but after visiting and learning,you will be inspired to ride and feel what I feel.

June 20 2011 is Ride To Work day. Ride to work and show everyone how fun,and economical it is. If more people had motorcycles and scooters,we'd use less gas,less parking space,have a more productive day at work,more money in the pocket,and more fun.

Motorcycling in Lake George,NY

I had originally planned to do the Iron Butt Run Saddlesore1000.This is 1000 miles in 24 hours or less sanctioned by the Iron Butt Association.On the day I planned to do this,May 27 2011,I found out I had been chosen by rider magazine ,through their Rider Diaries a website dedicated to routes entered by motorcyclists all over the world, to meet one one of rider magazine's popular writer,Clement Salvadori at Americade 2011 in lake George NY.Not only do I get to meet Clement,we were to go on a ride around Lake George.So,I passed on doing the Iron Butt at this time and will reschedule at a date to be determined later.
The date of this ride was June 7 2011,so I packed light(as I am a minimalist when it comes to traveling) Sunday June 5. I packed a few tools: Motorcycle Pump ,some wrenches,and one lightbulb that I had.I also packed one day's worth of clothes and my lunchbox with water bottles,my video camera,point and click camera,my cellphone,and of course my HD GoPro Camera.

     Monday June 6,I go to workat 5:30a and get out the door by 4:15p and rolling towards NY by 4:30p.
     Now,I must add here,I was second guessing wether I should ride up to NY or if I even wanted to from the day I found out I had won and all the way up to connecting with I84 from Route 209.I kept saying to myself,"I should turn around and go home,I got stuff on the DVR to watch,I don't really have the money,I don't..blah blah blah." Finally I just said "Hell with it,I don't want to get to the end of my life and say 'I wish I had done this or done that' and instead say 'I can't believe I did that!'."
     I worked out a route that involved very little tolls.

     I was debating wether I should leave at 2:00a Tuesday and go straight up,stay all day and then come right back,or go halfway and get a hotel.I stopped in Albany,NY and stayed overnight.
    I got to Albany NY about 9:45p,got my hotel room and rode 2 miles and got some burgers off the dollar menu at McDonald's and brought them back to eat in the room.Albany is only about 58 miles from lake George,so I slept until 7:00a and left about 8:00a after hitting the dollar menu again and getting gas.

320 miles later,I ride in to the parking lot at the Harley Boutique (rolls eyes) in Lake George,NY a little before 9:00a.

I made good time with a travel speed at about 70-75mph on I84 and I87. I go into the Harley "dealer" for about 3 minutes,come out and head into town to see what Americade is all about as I wasn't meeting Clement until 11:00a. I did ride through the village of Lake George with my GoPro camera running and I also filmed with my handheld HD camera.There will be video linked below!

    After topping off the gas tank again for what's sure to be an awesome ride,I head to Clement's hotel and call him to let him know I am here.(Yes,I have Clement's phone number in my phone contacts list now :oP )I drive around to his room number only to find out that not only will I be riding with Clement Salvadori,publishers of Backroads Motorcycle Tour Magazine ,Shira and Brian will be joining us.Brian gave me a copy of this free regional magazine,and let me tell you,it is a really great magazine...and it's free! Clement shows me the route we're going to take on a paper map and it looks like a great ride even on paper.It has lots of windy roads and curves.I can't wait,which becomes evident when he asks me if I wanted to go to lunch first to which I responded "No,let's ride!" So,we head downstairs to where Brian and Shira are eagerly waiting as it's not everyday they get to ride with the one and only Rory Anderson of Hero Story Productions !!

We put our riding coats and helmets on,gloves too,and head out of the parking lot of the hotel.It is a little crowded,but not as crowded as I thought such an event would be as we cruise on 9N into the mildly twisty roads around Lake George,NY. The ride is beautiful and uneventful, for about 30 minutes or so when we come upon a slow moving tractor trailer.Clement,who is leading,our awesome little group,makes it around the truck.I'm feeling nervous,as I always do when attempting to pass on a two lane windy road.The truck drops a gear and moves slower.Brian and Shira pass me and the truck.I'm left behind looking for a safe placew to pass and I am right behind this truck.He tries to downshift again and misses the gear.BANG!!! He comes to a stop and I almost crash into the trailer liftgate, I see a clear opening and pass the stopped truck,Shira and Brian, wave me past to my position right behind Clement when I catch up to them.We ride for another 10 minutes and stop at a pull off overlooking Lake George.It is a stunning view.

We take off again leaning into curves and once again letting all the problems slip away as only a motorcycle can accomplish.

We stop to take some action photos that(hopefully) will make it into the magazine which I don't have copies of at the moment.

We then ride into Chestertown,NY for lunch at a place called Luna Pizza.We sat outside in wrought iron seating on the sidewalk,because,who in their right mind would sit indoors if they don't have to?I had a large slice of pizza,Clement and Brian had Paninis and Shira had a salad,which was large enough that I finished off the half she couldn't eat. Clement tells me he that when he was offered this job at Rider magazine,they told him "we don't pay well,but there will be more motorcycles to ride then you can handle." he thought about it for 2 seconds.......I'm thinking I already got the not paid well part going for me,now only if I could get out of the truck and on the motorcycles.(Hey Rider,you reading this?)

There was also a neat little Ural Motorcycle shop right next door,but unfortunetly, they weren't open.I really would've liked to take a look at a Ural up close as i've only seen them in magazines and on TV.

After lunch,Brian and Shira,top off the gas tank at a nearby gas station and take off as Clem and I ride back towards the Village of Lake George,NY.We stop at the offramp and Clem tells me which events are worth seeing at Americade and other great roads to ride.With that,we shake hands, and he is fading away on his Harley.

I decide to just start heading home after getting gas and some water as I want to bring the wife up here on the motorcycle for a weekend adventure into the backroads and woods of Lake George,NY.I leave at around 2:40p and make it home 330 miles later at 9:30p. I did see two deer,one on I84 that a blast of the horn chased him back off the highway shoulder and into the woods.The sceond deer was on Route 209 in Delaware Water Gap,but that deer just looked at me like I was an idiot when I laid on the horn.

It was a great experience and I am so glad I decided to do it. Life is too short. I look forward to the next adventure!

Riding Pennsylvania

A shorter route I ride when I only have a couple hours.Enjoy riding through beautiful farmland and country settings. Minor twisties plus low traffic volume make this a nice ride. Just Be aware of Amish Buggies. There are also plenty of side roads to change up your riding experience. Enjoy!

Flat Tires and Flying Gloves

On Sunday,May 1 2011,I met with my friend Chris to go riding.I was going about 50 miles away,York,PA to meet someone in order to buy a used Kindle e-book reader.He was on his motorcycle and I was on mine. So,we talk for a few, then start cruising Route 272 in Adamstown,PA and get on Route 222 Southbound.I'm in the lead and Chris a few car lengths behind me.
It turns out,I forgot to close my bag and my $40.00 winter gloves go flying out right before the Brownstown Exit.(I don't know why I brought them, it's warm enough i don't need them)I didn't know this at the time.Chris saw them on the road but thought they belonged to a few other guys on motorcycles who were on the shoulder and looking back,so he didn't do anything to get my attention.
It's a nice ride,not very much traffic as we transition from 222 to 30 Westbound.I'm feeling good,Chris looks comfortable as I glance in my mirror.
As we're cruising along,about a half mile from the Centreville Rd Exit,the rear of my 2003 Honda Shadow starts to wobble.it feels like I'm riding on a sponge,the handlebarsand front wheel stay straight,the back end feeling,well, spongy.I immediatly pull over on the shoulder,and it is a slanting shoulder,so it won't even lean far enough on the kickstand to park it. Chris pulls in behind me and has no idea what was going on. We look as I'm holding up the bike and see that I have a flat tire. I'm only about 20 miles from home.

We look at the tire and can not find a puncture anywhere.I have a plug kit and an air pump ( http://www.cyclepump.com/ )but it's useless if I can't see a puncture.Just the day before,April 30,I ordered a rear tire because this one is at the end of it's life,so I thought since it was a bald tire with very little tread left,it wore out. So I call home to get help.While the wife is looking for someone to come out with a pick up truck or trailer to get me, a guy on a 1999 Harley pulls up and asks if he can help.I show him the tire and explain I can't find the puncture. He says Fix-A-Flat might work, just enough to get me home and he'll run me over to an auto parts store to get a can.
So,against,my better judgement,I get on....and ride bitch for the first time since I was a kid on my Dad's 1969 Sportster......Here is a short video clip.

It was uncomfortable not being in control(Are we ever really totally in control when riding?)

I get the can of Fix-A-Flat and we get back to where Chris is waiting with the motorcycles along route 30.I put the nozzle on and start the can as the tire fills,we find the puncture.Harley guy puts his finger over it in attempt to get it to seal.

It's not sealing.

The can is empty,he says roll up off the Centreville Rd exit and you might be able to make it to the gas station. I go ridinbg down the shoulder,fix a flat fluid spraying out of the puncture as the tire spins.

I get up off the exit,this traffic light holds a really long time.Of course the tire goes flat. So,I ride (thumpthumpthumpthumpthump) and try to make it into the parking lot of a Bob Evans restaraunt,and as soon as I make the right turn,the tire pops off the rim,throws the back end of the bike to the the right.I didn't drop it.

We push it down into the back of the lot.Nothing we can do now,

I thank the Harley guy for his help, offer him a tank of gas.As bikers usually do, he does not take it.Because bikers/riders are just that way.

So my neighbor comes out with his Suburban and very small ,rough looking trailer.We load it it on,strap it down and he takes me home.

Chris goes his way.
Now back to the gloves.The wife and I drove back out in her car looking for them.I spot one a half mile before the Brownstown Exit on Route 222 South bound in the left shoulder.We pull over and I run back and get.The other one is no where in sight.I walked back far. I was walking back,a little upset I lost these new gloves,I decide to look down the right shoulder ,so I start walking back.......and there it is in the grass! I got my gloves back!

I ordered the front tire as well on Monday and will have two brand new tires on for my Iron Butt Run attempt.So maybe this was a blessing in disguise.

Oddly Normal

I have been watching the show Oddities on the Science Channel for a while now.It's into it's second season.It's a reality show that follows a store in NYC called Obscura Antiques.The official website is www.obscuraantiques.com .Now,if you haven't seen this show,they sell alot of off the wall items such as antique medical tools,skulls,3 headed pigs,straight jackets,all things odd. The people who come in to buy these things aren't exactly "normal" in the sense of what society thinks is normal.
After watching this show for two and half seasons,I have come to the conclusion that these "odd" consumers are some of the nicest and most sincere people out there. They don't conform to what society says should be normal.They don't care what anyone else thinks about them.From what I have seen they have open minds,think outside the box,but don't look down on others.The "strange and unusual" that come into this store don't insult others,even those who are part of "normal society" and look at them with disdain or like they are better. The more I watch this show the more I realize these are the people I would like to meet. The people I meet everyday in my job fall into the category of what society says is "normal" but I see alot of them as uncaring,miserable people who think they are owed something.When I go to a place to make a delivery(I drive a truck for my job) lots of time the person in charge will unnecessarily make me wait just to show that he/she is in charge.
Just driving a car in public with "normal" society can be a bad experience.Everyone has to be first,they have no problem cutting someone off,but watch out if you cut them off!Then the road rage starts. I'm not saying everyone is like this,not at all.But when one is in public 55 hours a week dealing with society,one sees people's true colours. I also fall into this category,at times,so I am not completly innocent.
There is nothing wrong with being different.There is nothing wrong with being yourself.There is nothing wrong with not caring what others think of you.There is nothing wrong with accepting others for who they are,even if you may not like it.

Perhaps,"Odd" is the new "Normal?

Today,riding home from work,traffic was backed up both ways because of a school bus.This bus had the four way AMBER lights blinking.The driver had just dropped off the last kid,as the bus was empty,and she was parked along the curb,using her cellphone.At the point I was sitting in traffic, the right turn lane began.So I started to go,a pick up truck driver waiting to pull out of Lowes said the school bus had it's lights on.I told him, "As long as the red lights aren't on and the stop sign isn't out,you can pass it." He says "Ok, I'll follow you." I drive past the cars lined up in both directions,people looking at me with scorn and dissapproval.

As I was riding home, I realized I possibly gave them another reason to add to that negative stereotype bikers/riders have already. But I knew the law and they did not.So they needlessly sat in and backed up traffic both ways and in a major intersection. At first I felt guilty for perpetuating a bad impression,but now after starting to write this,they are the drivers that are in the wrong for not knowing the law. Perhaps,though,the bus driver,should have waved them on.All, I know is,regardless of what it looked like,I was right,and everyone else was wrong.

Bike Rallys and Group Rides

     I have always wanted to go to Sturgis Bike Week.Ride out for a week of beer,babes,bikes,and fun.The more I think about it,and after seeing two seasons of Full Throttle Saloon on TruTV,it seems like a money pit.I think I would rather ride out,when there is no event and ride through the Black Hills when it is much less crowded.I understand it cost money to run things and have a bar or a store at these events,but the high prices of camping,hotels,beer,and food has caused me to reevaluate going to Sturgis, or any other bike week.
   Group riding is not my "thing" either.I do not see the enjoyment of riding 30 motorcycles from place to place,or bar hopping.Trying to keep everyone together,planning out stops,trying to manage everyone's skill level and speed. I would much rather ride by myself or with one or two friends and just see where the bike takes me.For me motorcycling is suppose to be unplanned or free.I don't have a GPS and I don't bar hop.I put on miles and try to explore.For me the fun is not knowing where I am going.Making random turns and seeing where it turns out at.Getting lost is 3/4 of the fun.
   So what do you all think? What do you like or dislike about group rides and bike rallys?

This is my first blog,so bear with me.This blog is to invite all of you to an event.
So,a little bit about myself.My name is Rory Anderson,I have a soul sucking job as a semi truck driver.I love the Outer Banks of North Carolina,motorcycling,fishing,shooting,TV,Movies,booksoutdoors,camping,and making YouTube videos.I make videos on a variety of subjects from trucking to motorcycling,to...ummmm...finding a possum in my garbage can.There is even a video showcasing the correlation between McRibs and zombies.
   I will be attempting an Iron Butt Run on May 27 2011 and I am inviting all of you to follow along.The video linked to this blog has all the information.Please share with your friends,realtives,husbands and wives,and if you really want to piss them off, your enemies. :o)
   I have a been wanting to try an IronButt Run for 2 years now.My route will take me from the WaWa on Lancaster Ave and Museum Rd in Reading,PA,through Richmond VA.My turnaround point will be Red drum tackle Shop in Buxton NC.Then up over the Chesapeake bay Bridge Tunnel through Easton MD,Lewes DE,King of Prussia PA and back to my starting point in Reading PA.The route link is on the Event Facebook page linked in the description box of the video.You will be able to follow me through Twitter and Facebook,with my updates and photos.I will also have the GPS locator link so you can follow along or check back and see my progress.(All of these links are on the YouTube video in this blog.) I will be riding a 2003 Honda Shadow 1100cc motorcycle which I have owned since 2008.
   I have put many miles on two wheels and have done long distance riding,but never officially.I don't think I've done 1000 in 24,but I have come close,possibly around 800 or 900 miles.
