Chronic Kidney Disease Chronicles…Transplant Evaluation

WOOOOOSAAAAHHHH. I am chronicling my journey. It hasn’t been easy but writing about it is my therapy. I am not really ready to share my most intimate feelings and thoughts just yet.

These past 5 months have truly been a roller-coaster ride of events, emotions and energy. I finally had the energy to go through the 5 hour Transplant Evaluation. I won’t go into too much detail here… I am in the process of writing a book about this journey.

Suffice it to say that the staff at Einstein Transplant Department are THE BEST!!!
The most important thing right now is for me to get a live kidney donor. My blood type is A positive.

When the doctor told me I was in 4th stage CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) I didn't believe him So the first thing I did was to educate myself about kidneys; what they are and what they do. Because I always drank plenty of water and constantly urinated.Well, one of the number one signs that you may be suffering from Kidney Disease is constant urination - especially at night.

Also be aware of changes in urination. Color, foaminess, smell, or blood in urine could be an indication of kidney problems.

Another sign is lower back pain or pain in your sides. These can actually be pain from your kidneys.

Other early symptoms to include:

anemia,
changes in the way your food tastes,
loss of appetite,
dizziness,
headaches,
difficulty thinking clearly,
shortness of breath,
fatigue,
itchy skin or rash.

When it finally sunk in that the doctor was right, I had to find out what exactly it is that I am dealing with. What exactly do the kidneys do and what function has my body lost and how will dialysis help? Upon accepting the inevitable, I had to undergo a series of blood tests to determine my level of kidney function, or lack thereof. The one thing the doctor was very concerned about is something called the creatinine level. The normal rang is .06 - 1.2 milligrams. My levels? 8.6. Very very high. This is want sent me to the hospital on the even of Xmas, 2018.

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS

Of course as with all health related problems in the United States, the disparity among African American, Latinos and Native Americans is still in effect. Two major contributing factors are diabetes and hypertension - which are also prevalent among the aforementioned groups.

DISPARITY

THE BOTTOM LINE....EAT RIGHT.

Two things we have to be careful about are Sodium, Potassium and Phosphorus. These are not our friends! Instead of focusing on what we CAN'T ear, I will focus on some of the many delicious foods that we CAN eat!

Lessons from a Snowflake

Happy New Year!

It's January 2019, and I was just thinking that we haven't had any snow yet in Philly. Oh, yeah. We did have that surprise 3 inches in November, but, I was hoping for a White Christmas.

As my grand daughter and I made snowflakes by cutting up white paper, I began to think about the structure of a real snowflake as she began explaining to me how snowflakes have 6 points. I thought, "How interesting that such a tiny and fragile object has a six pointed structure." Then I looked up what are snowflakes made of. We learned that the molecules in the ice crystals join to one another in a hexagonal structure, allowing water molecules (H2O) to form a snowflake.

Each snowflake is a different individual, and by themselves they don't make much of an impact. Sometimes they get carried away by the wind. Sometimes they collide and damage each other. Most times they collide and work together and when they work and bind together, they can wreak havoc on a city!

What a basic and fundamental concept! Our communities could sure learn a lesson from these tiny and fragile pieces of matter.

We are all different individually, but collectively, if we work and bind together, we can strike a mighty blow.

Ponder that.

In contrast of being founder and organizer for the Globe Trotting Divas of Philadelphia Travel Club, one of Philadelphia’s most active Women’s Only Travel Clubs where group travel is our focus, after taking my first trip to Jamaica alone in September 2016, I attest that every female traveler should try traveling alone at least once.

It was Negril, Jamaica I traveled to and stayed for 6 days @ Riu Negril All-Inclusive Resort. Before arriving I had conducted in depth research and created a well thought out itinerary of how I would spend my time and navigate throughout the island. I felt perfectly safe but I should also note that this trip to Jamaica would make my 7^th visit but first time traveling to the island alone. After my return home I felt renewed, restored and ready for my next solo vacation.

Here’s why woman should experience solo travel at least once…

Over Come Fear

Traveling alone affords the opportunity to overcome fear. If your biggest fear of traveling alone is safety in depth research of your host destination is the obvious. But upon arrival apply common sense during your journey. After all, there are some places right in your current place of residence that you know not to be at after a certain hour. Will the same not apply while traveling? Familiarize yourself with the laws of the country you’ll be visiting as well.

Another fear you’ll overcome is the fear of speaking with strangers. My oh my I quickly became used to speaking with and holding great conversations with great people that once appeared as total strangers!

Build Your Own Schedule

Now, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE group travel! But traveling alone allows you to be on your own schedule. Sightsee at your leisure, sleeping in or rise with the sunset, hang out with locals without your friends asking more questions than the FBI. Whatever it may be the choice if yours and no confirmation is needed.

Recreate Yourself

The most important moment you’ll have while traveling solo is the opportunity to regroup, rethink and recreate yourself. While traveling solo in Negril I took a day to inhale new thoughts and clear my mind and reflect on things that required my attention. I was at a peace of mind and took the day to write out my thoughts, plans and reflections on life.

You’ll Meet New People

Go ahead and book without your friends! You’ll meet new people along your journey. During my trip I met lots of wonderful people from all over the world that were visiting Jamaica during the time I was. I danced, took a tour and ate lunch with complete strangers. And later those strangers became friends whom I still connect with. For someone like myself who can be extremely shy being social with strangers certainly caused me to come out of my shell and the one thing I discovered was that it’s OK!

You’ll Build Self Confidence

Traveling solo will help build your self-confidence. It pushes you to dismiss the limits you set for yourself. You’ll find that zip lining brings out the adventure side you’ve kept bottled up and that eating snails isn’t so bad after all and traveling through the city alone without your friends or significant other is actually a great idea because you can sightsee at your leisure. Even more, you’ll discover that you can’t wait to do it all again!

Travel Tips. From Check In to Carry On.

It’s finally here! Vacation is only 7 days away and the excitement has you overly pumped before the nagging thought of packing comes to mind. From what to pack to which size luggage to pack your items in, all races through your head like NASCAR. And no matter what your goal is to avoid check baggage fees and carry on your luggage but it seems impossible since you’ve now packed your entire Spring, Summer and Winter wardrobes.

Many times we’re so excited about traveling and landing some place we’ve never been that we actually pack as if we’re not coming back home! I know I’ve been guilty of this in the past. Below I’ve shared some tips and suggestions on how to pack light by only bringing items and clothing you will actually need while traveling. If you lighten your bag by packing only the essentials, you can save $50 or more per round trip flight!

Where Are You Going and for How LONG?

Ding! Ding! Ding! The magic question! Pack your bags according to your length of stay. For instance, a 4 day/3 night getaway should not warrant for 15 rounds of changing clothes. My gosh not even at the Grammies do they change that much! Chances are you’ll only need about 2 pairs of slacks/pants, 4 shirts, 2 pairs of jeans, 1 dress that you can dress up or down and 2 pairs of footwear; 1 pair for day and the other at night. And don’t be afraid to bring along laundry detergent.

Apply The Shirt to Pants Rule

Reminder the Shirt to Pants Rule? The rule says this: for every 1 pair of slacks or pants you should have 2 dress shirts or 2 blouses to make it appear as if you have 2 different outfits. Well that same rule applies for traveling! This rule can also be applied when packing footwear. And don’t be ashamed to bring your favorite pair of sneakers or shoes. If they fall apart while traveling, at least that’s one less item to bring back. Or, you can always use that as the perfect excuse to buy another pair while on your journey! Remember your goal is to avoid checked baggage fees by packing smarter.

Footwear in Bag First

There was a time where I would throw my footwear on top of the clothes I put in my luggage and wondered why it would never close or would appear bulky. Later, I discovered that if I placed my footwear in a draw string bag and then place them in my luggage it would afford more space and wouldn’t appear bulky. Place your footwear in a plastic bag first then into your luggage. This alone illuminates that bulky look and gives more packing room.

By far the Packing Cube is a traveler’s best friend next to visiting the island of Jamaica! Packing Cubes come in packages that offer various sizes for your travel needs. You can pack all clothing items in one bag and footwear in another. It saves time, money and space.

HEALTHY HAIR AND SCALP IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL

I’ve been wearing wigs lately. They are convenient especially when your natural hair is at an awkward in-between stage of going from short back to long. Wigs also allow your hair to rest from the things we put on it. Just remember, when wearing wigs, you still need to care for your natural hair. Just want to share a few of my remedies.

COD LIVER OIL – How many of you had grandmothers who used this as a remedy for damn near any ailment they had? I know mines did. Including hair treatment. My grandmother would rub Cod Liver Oil on her hair once per week. Then she would put a stocking over the hair brush and brush her hair for about 15 minutes. She had the most beautiful head of hair.

This oil can also be used for hot oil treatments.

Now, scientist and studies are showing what our grandmothers already knew. Cod Liver Oil is high in vitamins A and D while promoting healthy hair and scalp.

BRAID YOUR NATURAL HAIR – The “Wig Lady” that I go do wears wigs everyday. She is also a licensed cosmetologist. Tell me why she does not braid her natural hair? Now it so matted that it must be cut down. Wigs look nice, but you natural hair needs to be cared for.

MASSAGE YOUR SCALP – There is nothing like a good scalp massage! Not scratching the scalp, but massaging it. It is better when someone else massages your scalp, but you can do it yourself. For best results, start at the forehead and work your way down to the nape of your neck. You can also purchase a scalp massager. Not only does this promote hair growth, it’s also good for the soul!

Balance sheet analysis provides planning opportunities

Learn to dissect your company's balance sheet to discover opportunities for growth, imminent shortfalls, financial disasters in the making, and trends both favorable and unfavorable. To jumpstart your analysis, focus on the following key indicators.
Current ratio. The current ratio is calculated by dividing current assets by current liabilities. Current assets generally include cash, investments, short-term accounts receivable, inventory, and supplies. Current liabilities includepayroll and other short-term payables, as well as current payments on long-term debts such as mortgages or bank loans. These accounts are classified as "current" because you generally expect to convert them to cash or pay them off within a year or during the current business cycle. For example, you might buy inventory on credit and plan to pay suppliers using proceeds from current sales. The rule of thumb: If your company's current ratio is greater than one, you have enough short-term assets to cover short-term obligations. If the number dips below one, your business may be headed for trouble.
On the other hand, if the current ratio is three or above, you could be neglecting profitable investment opportunities. For instance, you might have too much money sitting in a low-interest bank account when the funds could be used to develop a new product line, liquidate long-term debt, or invest in a more lucrative venture.
Working capital. Subtract current liabilities from current assets to arrive at this number. Like the current ratio, working capital indicates whether your company has enough cash (and short-term assets that can be converted to cash) to meet current obligations. Banks analyze this number because they're reluctant toloan money to a business that's barely covering existing commitments. The greater the amount of working capital, the more likely your company will make payments when due.
Debt-to-equity ratio. You can calculate the debt-to-equity ratio by dividing total liabilities by total equity (assets minus liabilities). The debt-to-equity ratio indicates whether your company is relying excessively on debt to finance current operations. Like the spendthrift who finances an extravagant lifestyle with credit cards, a business that's heavily leveraged may find itself careening toward bankruptcy. Analyzing this ratio can help you make needed corrections before it's too late. Generally speaking, the lower the percentage, the stronger your company's financial health.

Trim the fat from your grocery bill

Looking to save money on household expenses? Start with your grocery bill. Here are eight ideas for reducing how much you spend on food.

Make a list. By deciding ahead of time what's needed for upcoming meals, you'll be less likely to buy on impulse.

Buy generic. Thanks to advertising and packaging, brand differences are often more perceived than real. Blind taste-comparison tests have shown that study participants often can't tell the difference between well-known and generic brands. That's especially true with staples such as salt, sugar, and other baking supplies. Be willing to experiment. If you try a product and aren't satisfied with quality or taste, you can always purchase a more expensive brand on a subsequent trip to the store.

Go simple. Think salads, one-dish casseroles, and in-season fruits. You'll avoid the trap of eating pre-packaged, less nutritious, and more expensive meals.

Pay with cash. Research studies show that paying with a credit or debit card lessens your perception of how much you're spending. Pull actual currency from your wallet and you may find that impulse purchases aren't as tantalizing. Stay within budget by bringing only as much cash as you need.

Shop at the edges. In many stores, the produce, dairy, and meat departments are located on the perimeter. Snacks, canned goods, and pre-packaged meals are stocked in the center aisles and toward the front of the store. Buy items mostly from the outside edges and your meals will be healthier and cheaper.

Scrutinize unit prices. Don't buy items based on total cost alone. Instead, compare unit prices, which tell you the cost per a standard weight or volume. Larger doesn't always mean cheaper.

Eat first, shop later. That candy bar or bag of potato chips won't be quite as appealing after a full meal.

Try a different establishment. If you frequent a particular store out of habit, don't be afraid to shop around.

Yes, I'm back. Using my writing skills to bring attention to taboo subjects. My intention is to bring more awareness to the various forms of domestic violence and the adverse health affects associated with it, as well as the affects this pandemic has on children of the abused and the abuser.

As a mother of 3 grown girls, I am still trying to analyze and reverse the affects of actions that I have allowed them to witness. I have taken the position of survivor not that of victim. For, although they are grown, they still need guidance and direction. And they need to know the truth about the cold cruel world in which we live. Most of all, our young women need to know the importance of Self Love. They need to know that it is not selfish to love yourself. They need to learn to be self sufficient so that they are not tempted to stay in any unhealthy relationship for emotional or financial stability.

Seasons of Hope not only entertains. It addresses issues the of domestic violence, substance abuse and the effects these issues have on our health, mental and emotional well-being. Domestic Violence is real. It kills. It has no respect of persons gender, race, religion or socio-economic background. Many suffer in silence, fearing for their very lives. While it is apparent that more help and assistance is needed for victims, the fact remains that the abuser needs help as well.

Last year, Pa. Governor Tom Wolf is proposing a $1.5-million increase that would be used to provide lifesaving services to victims of domestic violence through PCADV’s domestic violence. The money will be used to stabilize critical services such as civil legal representation, medical advocacy and emergency shelter for victims and their children.

His efforts are commendable, yet short-lived and ineffective. During this fiasco of a U.S. Presidential campaign, I haven't heard any candidate talk about these issues that mostly affect women. I've heard talk about equal pay for equal work, but nothing to address the steadily rising statistics of Domestic Violence related homicides and suicides.

So, I will continue to use my writing skills to write books that not only entertain, but also bring awareness to pertinent issues such as Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking.
