I don't think I've come across a photograph with such warmth, compassion, comradely love and power as this!

I've taken it from a Facebook page where it is entitled 'Şehid ''Bre Hasan'' u ''Erdal Bahoz''

So, I can only take a guess at what is happening here but it shows a unit of HPG seemingly being led by Brez Hasan who later fell in a military engagement with the Turkish military.

The unit could be setting off on an operation and are being sent off by legendary military commander, Bahoz Erdal.

He is saying something to Brez Hasan that is of amusement to the whole unit but this makes me cry.......

Kurdish youth fleeing burnt villages or torture from the Turkish police take to the mountains to struggle against the brutal and racist treatment of the Kurds by one of the most murderous regimes man has known.

These young people and volunteers have fought for justice for the Kurdish people over the last 4 decades and their fathers and grandfathers before them struggled against numerous regimes that sought to destroy them!

I hope there is not a Kurd left that believes Turkey's cruel psychological weapon of labelling these brave heros as 'terrorists' and will support the campaign to remove this disgusting insult!

And I hope that, on the eve of yet another Kurdish initiative to end the war and bring justice for the Kurdish people that the world's eyes are on Turkey and their military forces.

These fighters have pledged to carry out their leader, Abdullah Ocalan's order to withdraw to Qandil mountains to create an environment to finally solve the Kurdish Question, peacefully and politically.

From today, 8th May 2013, they will begin to withdraw in small units.

The last time there was a ceasefire and withdrawal by the Kurdish fighters, Turkey carried out an act of unspeakable criminality and murder and attacked the fighters as they withdrew killings hundreds and sabotaging the ceasefire effort by PKK, yet again!

As we nervously wait to see if this time it will be different I reflect on the sacrifice made by Brez Hasan, all Kurdish martyrs and those who continue to be the defenders of Kurdish hopes and dreams for freedom and justice!

Opportunity for Peace! The Stakes Could Not Be Higher!

TOMORROW 8th May 2013, PKK's Kurdish fighters will begin an historic withdrawal to Qandil Mountains as part of peace process!

PKK's withdrawal will be a test of Turkey's commitment to a peaceful resolution to the Kurdish Question as monitors prepare.

The last time PKK's forces withdrew to Qandil in 1999, Turkey ignored the ceasefire and shamefully attacked retreating forces!

Can we trust the AKP and Turkish military not to sabotage PKK's peace gesture again?

WE HOLD OUR BREATH to see if Turkey will attack retreating Kurdish forces on ceasefire as part of commitment to peace process!

To attack retreating Kurdish forces on ceasefire would be met with a firestorm and an opportunity would be missed to solve the Kurdish Question peacefully while a wider war would engulf the region!

THE STAKES could not be higher on the eve of PKK's withdrawal of Kurdish forces to Qandil.

There is one point shared by all those who have risen up, struggle for their dignity and those who fill the squares: Hope. To date, capitalism's modernist imposition always tried to strike this

attribute of ours; that is to hope. For peoples hope is not something that should be searched far from oneself. The common point in the resistance of our people that has transcended all borders and in all other resistances of people from Mexico to Tahrir is the fact that peoples have found hope to be within themselves.

Today, in this First of May, one of the most important messages that needs to be given is that we have confidence in the ability of the peoples of the world to live both in peace and dignity. Because the experience of the past and present has taught us that the statist and elitist communities are a minority in this world but we, the majority, carry the elements of rebellion in our words and deeds.

Our response to the salute you sent to the Kurdish people's struggle for equality and freedom via your organizations would be to take back the modernity from the hands of the elites and reconstruct it as an egalitarian and democratic modernity. As with every period in history, every blow made to the working people in all the continents of the world and in all countries also injures the rest of us with the same severity. Our long term political struggle is a clear indication of how a people can change its destiny through common sense and effort.

Due to my present circumstances I am unable to be there with you. However this does not mean that the rebellion of any given Kurd differentiates from the struggle of your own, on the contrary, this is an indication of the necessity of all political movements and working peoples to come together. The most dignified method to head to the end of the history of capitalism, nation-state and genocides is to carry this togetherness, the intellectual collectivity more freely to a wider audience.

Let me remind all that there is a long head way to make in the struggle areas of social gender equality, working conditions, rights of the immigrants, unemployment, racism and sub-contractors.

With the resistance spirit of First of May, I salute all of you who have volunteered to fundamentally change the history of the decaying capitalism, nation-state and its genocides and massacres and to re-write history.

Kurdish Communities Union (KCK) Executive Council president Murat Karayılan spoke to Turkish journalists who went to Kandil for the press conference KCK held on 25 April on the withdrawal of Kurdish guerrillas from Turkish borders.

According to the report by Şirin Payzın from CNN Türk, Karayılan said that guerrilla forces will withdraw without conditions. According to Payzın, Karayılan said “what we have highlighted for the process of democratization and liberation to begin after the withdrawal are steps we consider necessary to ensure a permanent peace”.

Karayılan listed these steps as the amendment of the law on political parties, the election threshold, the anti-terror law, abolition of the village-guard system and liberation of prisoners tried in the KCK case.

KCK Executive Council president repeated KCK's demand to meet Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan in Imralı Prison, saying, "Considering the fact that we could go to Oslo for meetings earlier, I believe we can go to Imralı as well. The meeting between KCK and Öcalan could be realized by the visit of a delegation from Kandil, and perhaps a delegation consisting of members of the Kurdish women's movement. These meetings will enable us to tell the process to each level units under our movement in a more proper and healthy way. We support the talks between Öcalan and the Turkish state but we have never intended to have talks with the state. We stand by Öcalan's statements".

Karayılan remarked that the organization of a peace conference in Ankara would contribute to gathering the society for a purpose, noting that they demanded democracy in Turkey for not only a solution to the Kurdish question but also for all oppressed circles such as Alevis and other ethnic and religious identities, women, workers and all peoples. We demand peace for a democratic and pluralist Turkey, he added.

The 2013 TIME 100 presents its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, from artists and leaders to pioneers, titans and icons.

The Irish peace accord known as the Good Friday Agreement is 15 years old this month. For almost all that time, Abdullah Ocalan, a founder of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party, has been in prison in Turkey.

Despite this, he has become a voice for peace, a leader willing to offer the hand of friendship to those he has fought against for most of his life. Persuading enemies that there are alternative ways to resolve long-standing differences takes patience and a willingness to engage in dialogue, but most important, it requires leadership.

Ocalan has demonstrated that leadership. Despite incarceration, he has forged a road map to peace that commits the Kurdish people to democracy and freedom and tolerance. He argues that it is time to “silence the weapons and let the ideas and politics speak.” Ocalan wants a “new beginning” that will bring the Kurdish people’s struggle into a new phase — a political phase in which they seek through negotiation to create an equal, free and democratic country for “all peoples and cultures.”

I commend him for his leadership and vision and urge the Turkish government to release him.

March 28th Thursday at last! The Kurdish language can be spoken in a
Turkish court. Just 4 bailed. 22 remain in prison. Not much change.

Today was historic in one way. For shortly after the Kurdish lawyers'
trial opened, in the packed small courtroom in Silivri, the judge,
the same one we have seen presiding at all the previous hearings,
declared " those defendants and their lawyers who feel more
comfortable speaking in their Kurdish mother tongue may do so. The
court has interpreters available"

We of the international lawyers' delegations wanted to shout "bravo",
or clap loudly for indeed the actual implementation by the judge of
this very new law which many of us feared would be subjected to a very
narrow interpretation by the judge is to be celebrated. It does
represent a massive step forward in acknowledging Kurdish people's
rights to their culture, their mothrr tongue, their identity.

But it was to be only a step, and as the lawyer defendants, one by
one, argued their innocence, raged at or ridiculed the fantasies and
misrepresentations in the indictments; questioned the very legality of
the whole process of their arrests, detentions and treatment;
condemned the policies of the government that punishes lawyers for
simply doing their job; highlighted the breaches of the basic human
rights standards for fair trials;the unlawful invasion of the
confidentiality that should exist between a lawyer and his client it
became clear that, in spite of this significant concession there would
be no great victory by the end of the day.

Three bailed women lawyer defendants were among the first to plead
their cases. A fourth, when called to address the judge, declared she
would not make her submissions until all her imprisoned colleagues
were released on bail.
The one journalist prisoner in this trial picked lie after lie,
inconsistencies and inaccuracies in his indictment, his lengthy
presentation covering the detailed forensics of a mass of emails, that
he showed could not possibly have come from him or to him. One after
another, defendants, speaking in Kurdish, but with a Turkish
interpreter at their side, upbraided the judge and the court system
for its lack of legality. Every defendant referring to the process as
purely political and grossly unjust.

"This is a political trial. You are criminalising lawyers for simply
doing their job. The indictments have no basis on facts. By subjecting
so many lawyers to long spells in pre-trial detention, you are also
depriving ordinary people of access to justice"

The indictments of the 46 lawyers, of whom some 20 had been bailed
before this fourth hearing, have in common the allegation that they,
as lawyers for the Kurdish leader imprisoned on Imrali island since
1999, are then"couriers" for Ocalan's "Leadership Committee". This,
the Prosecutor insists, is an illegal terrorist organisation that the
lawyers are members of, and are transmitting terrorism-related
messages, on behalf of Ocalan, to the PKK. Again and again,
throughout the day these allegations were rebutted. The lawyers for
Ocalan knew nothing of such an organisation. Nor was there any hard
evidence that such an association actually existed.

There were, however, even amid the tensions and anger, moments of
sheer comedy, when everyone, Judge, Defendants, lawyers, relatives and
the international delegations, even the Jandarma police) burst out
laughing. At one point a defendant remarked how, in childhood, he had
had such respect for the legal profession and for judges. But now that
respect had turned to shame. The judge, in one of his very few
rejoinders, queried "and for Prosecutors?" "No, never, never for
Prosecutors" came back the answer and the whole packed courtroom
roared with laughter.

By early afternoon we had heard only 13 of the 46 defendants. The
judge refused to continue the hearing on the next day. He was "busy"
and said he would close the trial at 4.55pm. He demanded that no
defendant now speak for more than 15 minutes but it was clear that
many defendants would not be heard this day.

In the end, the hearing continued until 8.00 p.m with rousing speeches
from senior members of the Turkish bars calling for the release of all
the lawyers from prison this night, and a dropping of all the charges
against them.

They spoke for all the defendants since most were arguing the same
point : as lawyers we are simply doing our professional job; the
phone-tapping, bugging of our conversations with our client, raiding
of our homes and offices, seizing of our files was unlawful; the
allegation of membership of an illegal organisation is a fantasy
totally unsupported by evidence. Time and time again the lawyers
described themselves and were described by their lawyers and
supporters as "hostages". Hostages to the AKP policy to destroy all
peaceful activism on the part of the Kurds. Attacking and silencing
the lawyers forms part of the government"s strategy.

The most eloquent of all the advocates in court was Bahri Bayram
Belen. Although I understand not a word of Turkish or Kurdish, his
splendid oratory, his dramatic pauses, his brilliant gestures of arms
and hands, the wonderful range of his voice tones, was compelling and
memorable. "Release them all. All should be free."

It was not to be. The case was adjourned for the fifth time to June 20th .

The prosecutor ordered the immediate arrests and detention of two
bailed defendants who had failed to appear today. (Surely, there must
be some good reason; illness? Accident?)

Only 4 of the imprisoned defendants were given bail. There remain 22
lawyers still in prison for the next three months. And in other
cities lawyers, such as those belonging to the Progressive Lawyers
Association, continue to be arrested and detained.

The international delegations presented their petition to the Judge.
He saw we were there. But does it make any difference? Yes, a small
step forward via the new law on mother tongue rights in court. But
nothing much has really changed. May 6th sees the resumption of the
big KCK trial in Diyarbakir.

Where do all these attacks on the lawyers representing the Kurdish
leader leave the prospect of progress on securing the peace? The AKP,
under Erdogan, is talking to Ocalan, but if the lawyers have their
discourses, that is, as part of the lawyer-client relationship, this
is regarded as criminal.

It does not make sense. So not much rejoicing. But we, the
international delegations, must be sure to be here again in force, in
Istanbul in June, and in Diyarbakir, in May, for the KCK Trial.

As lawyers, we must show solidarity with those of our profession who
are being persecuted.

And it's time, surely, for the ICJ to send an observer. Turkey must be
made to reform its justice system if it is to be a respected member of
the international community or to be accepted into the European one.

I SALUTE THE FREEDOM NEWROZ OF THE OPPRESSED

I salute the people of the Middle East and Central Asia celebrating this awakening, revival and resurgence day of Newroz with extraordinary participation and unity…

I salute all the peoples celebrating Newroz, which is the daylight and turning point of a new era, with great enthusiasm and democratic tolerance…

I salute all the travellers on this grand path toward democratic rights, freedom and equality…

I salute you, the Kurdish people, living at the Zagros and Taurus mountain skirts and in the valleys of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. I salute the Kurdish people, an ancient people, dwellers in the sacred lands of Mesopotamia and Anatolia, mother to all agricultural, village and urban civilizations….

Kurds have taken part in this several-thousand-year-old civilization in friendship and accord with diverse races, religions, creeds – we have all built it together. For Kurds the Euphrates and Tigris are the siblings of Sakarya and Maritsa. Ararat and Judi are the friends of Kaçkars and Erciyes. Halay^¹ and Delilo^², are in the family of Horon^³ and Zeybek^⁴.

These grand civilizations, these coexisting communities have more recently been pitted against each other by political pressure, external interventions and group interests. The result has been the construction of systems that are not based upon rights, law, equality and freedom.

For the last two hundred years military conquests, western imperialist interventions, as well as repression and policies of denial have tried to submerge the Arabian, Turkic, Persian and Kurdish communities to the rule of nation states, its imaginary borders and artificial problems.

The era of exploitative regimes, repression and denial is over. The peoples of the Middle East and those of Central Asia are awakening. They are returning to their roots. They demand a halt to the blinding and seditious wars and conflicts against one another.

Those thousands, millions of people who are pouring into these arenas are burning with the passion of Newroz. They cry for peace and amity, and they are demanding a solution.

This struggle, which began as my own individual rebellion against the despair, ignorance and slavery into which I was born, has sought to create a new consciousness, a new understanding and a new spirit. Today I see that our efforts have reached a new level.

Our fight has not been and can never be against any specific race, religion, sect, or group. Our fight has been against repression, ignorance and injustice, against enforced underdevelopment as well as against all forms of oppression.

Today we are awakening to a new Turkey and a new Middle East.

The youth who have welcomed my call, the eminent women who heeded my call, friends who have accepted my discourse and all people who can hear my voice:

Today a new era is beginning.

The period of armed struggle is ending, and the door is opening to democratic politics.
We are beginning a process focused on political, social and economic aspects; an understanding based on democratic rights, freedoms, and equality is growing.

We have sacrificed much of our lives for the Kurdish people, we paid a high price. None of these sacrifices, none of our struggles, were in vain. For as a consequence of them, the Kurdish people have attained once again their identity and their roots.

We have now reached the point of “silence the weapons and let the ideas and politics speak”. The modernist paradigm that has disregarded, excluded and denied us has been razed to the ground. Regardless of whether it be Turkish, Kurdish, Laz or Circassian – the blood spilled is flowing from a human being and from the bosom of this land.

Witnessed by the millions of people who heed my call, I say a new era is beginning; an era where politics gain prominence over weapons. We have now arrived at the stage of withdrawing our armed forces outside the borders.

I believe that all those who have believed in this cause and me are sensitive to the possible dangers of the process.

This is not an end, but a new beginning. This is not abandoning the struggle – we are initiating a different struggle.

The creation of geographies based on ethnicity and a single nation is an inhuman fabrication of modernity that denies our roots and our origins.

A great responsibility falls on all of us to create an equal, free and democratic country of all peoples and cultures, befitting the history of Kurdistan and Anatolia. On this occasion of Newroz, I call on the Armenians, Turkomans, Assyrians, Arabs and all other peoples just as much as on the Kurds to behold the flame of freedom and equality – the fire that is lit here today – and embrace it as their own.

Distinguished people of Turkey;

The Turkish people who live in what is called Turkey today – the ancient Anatolia – should recognise that their common life with the Kurds, under the flag of Islam, rests on the principles of amity and solidarity. The rules of amity has and should have no room for conquest, denial, rejection, forced assimilation, or annihilation.

The last century’s repressive, annihilationist, and assimilationist policies, based on capitalist modernity, represent the efforts of a ruling elite to deny a long history of amity. They do not represent the will of the people. It is now very clear that this grip of tyranny contradicts both history and rules of amity. In order to be able to leave that lamentable past behind, I call on the two strategic powers of the Middle East to build a democratic modernity befitting our culture and civilization.

The time has come for dispute, conflict, and enmity to yield to alliance, unity, blessings, and a mutual embrace.

The Turks and Kurds who fell as martyrs together at Çanakkale also went through the War of Independence together, and together they opened the 1920 assembly.

Our common past is a reality that requires us to create a common future. Today the spirit that established the Turkish Grand Assembly leads the way to the new era.

I call on all oppressed peoples; on women, who are the most long-standing colonized and subjugated class; on all marginalized and excluded creeds, cults, and cultures; on the working class and all subordinated classes; on everyone who has been excluded from the system to take their rightful position in Democratic Modernity and to attain its mentality.

The Middle East and Central Asia are searching for a contemporary modernity and a democratic order that befits their own history. A new model in which all can coexist peacefully and amicably has become an objective need like the need for bread and water. Inevitably, again, the geography and culture of Anatolia and Mesopotamia are guiding it to build such a model.

We are experiencing a more current, more complicated, and more profound version of the War of Independence that developed in the framework of the [1920] National Pact.

Despite all the mistakes, setbacks, and failures of the past ninety years, we are once again trying to build a model with all the peoples, classes, and cultures who have been victims and have suffered through terrible disasters. I call on all of you to step forward and help achieve an egalitarian, free, and democratic social organization.

I call on the Kurds, Turkoman, Assyrians and Arabs who were separated despite the National Pact and today have been condemned to live under grave problems and in conflict with one another within the Syrian and Iraqi Arab Republic to begin discussions, and re-asses as well as to take decisions on their present reality in a “National Solidarity and Peace Conference”.

The breadth and comprehensiveness of the “WE” concept has an important place within the history of this land. But in the hands of the narrow and ruling elitists, “WE” has been reduced to “ONE.” It is time to give the “WE” concept its old spirit and to implement it.

We shall unite against those who want to divide and make us fight one another. We shall join together against those who want to separate us.

Those who cannot understand the spirit of the age will end up in the dustbin of history. Those who resist the current will fall into the abyss.

The peoples of the region are witnessing a new dawn. The peoples of the Middle East are weary of enmity, conflict, and war. They want to be reborn from their own roots and to stand shoulder to shoulder.

This Newroz is a beacon to us all.

The truths in the messages of Moses, Jesus and Mohammed are being implemented in our lives today with new tidings. People are trying to regain what they have lost.

We do not deny the values of the contemporary civilisation of the West in whole. We indeed take the values of enlightenment, equality, freedom and democracy, and in order to implement them we synthesise them with our own existential values and lifeways.

The basis of the new struggle is thoughts, ideology and democratic politics, and to be able to start a great democratic leap forward.

Greetings to all those who have contributed to this process and strengthened it, and to all to those who have supported the peaceful democratic solution!

I salute all those who take responsibility for the amicable, equal and democratic freedom of peoples!

Long live Newroz, long live the amity of peoples!

Could this be possibly the most painful, powerful, cathartic image to come from Turkey's war of terror against the Kurds!

Crowds gathered to bid farewell to Berfo Ana (Mother Berfo), a 105-year-old woman who became a public figure in her search for justice for her lost son Cemil Kırbayır, in Istanbul on Feb. 22.

The Saturday Mothers, who have been holding sit-in protests every Saturday in Istanbul’s Galatasaray Square to learn the fate of loved ones who disappeared after the 1980 coup, held a ceremony for their oldest member, who passed away Feb. 21.

“Do not bury me before you find my son’s remains,” the elderly woman had told her other son, Mikail Kırbayır, before dying.

The man said he did not know what to do in the wake of his mother’s passing.

Cemil Kırbayır, the woman’s other son and a member of the outlawed leftist Revolutionary Youth (Dev-Genç) organization, is thought to have been killed in custody in the eastern province of Kars in 1980, but his remains have never been found.

Berfo Kırbayır frequently said her only desire was to find the remains of her lost son. She also took part in the 1980 coup case in which the surviving coup leaders, Kenan Evren and Tahsin Şahinkaya, are being tried.

The woman’s daughter, Fatma Gülmez, called on Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to execute her mother’s last and only will. “My mother died in disappointment; give my brother’s bones to us and let us bury my mom with him,” she said in tears.

The Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) co-chairpersons Selahattin Demirtaş and Gültan Kışanak, former Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP) head Ufuk Uras, Kurdish singer Ferhat Tunç and former BDP deputy Akın Birdal also attended the funeral.

Demirtaş said Berfo Ana was the symbol of a mother who had suffered from three decades of clashes.

After the memorial service, a funeral prayer was held for Kırbayır at Istanbul’s Şakirin Mosque. She will be buried in the village of Okçu, located in the eastern province of Ardahan’s Göle district

To commemorate the potential, historical and political advance made by today's decision of the Turkish Justice Ministry to allow three BDP delegates to visit Imrali Island to talk to Abdullah Ocalan regarding the much reported 'Imrali Process' of talks aimed a trying to secure a political peaceful settlement to the Kurdish Question in Turkey I posted two pictures on my own personal Facebook account.

I live in London but Kurds are being censored all over the world on behalf of the Turkish government!

Facebook have a specific policy directed towards the Kurdish people that is not applied to any other people or struggle around the world. Surely this is discrimination and should be challenged in a court of international law! We have tons of evidence if there is a budding freedom of expression lawyer out there who wants to take Facebook to court to challenge it!

Solin Onur (above left)is a five year old girl diagnosed with leukemia.

Her seven year old brother Mirhat (above right) has epilepsy.

Their mother, Hanim Onur (above centre), was the deputy Mayor of Cizre, until she was arrested within the scope of the so called ”KCK operations” on 16th of September 2011 and has been locked up in prison in Mêrdîn since then.

Solins mother is among thousands of other Kurdish politicians, journalists, human rights activists and other Kurdish civilians that have been arrested during the ”KCK operations” where Turkish authorities targeted the Kurdish civilian opposition.

The charges and evidence that has slipped out from the trials so far show that much of the trials are based on phony evidence and that the operations has merely been a tool for the ruling AKP government to quell any political or civil rights group that demands improvement of the rights of the Kurdish people.

Knowing that the chances for a fair trial was dim, her father succeeded to flee and avoid being arrested like his wife. Since then he has managed to keep away from the injustice of the authorities.

Not being able to have either her father or mother by her side has left Solin in a bad psychological state. The trauma of being alone has meant that she is not responding well to the medication.

Solins mother, well aware of the situation of her family, has applied to the authorities to set her free until her trial begins, but her application has been denied by the Turkish authorities.

Solin and Mirhat's situation has touched and angered the Kurdish public opinion.

Campaigns have been started in social media where people demand that the Turkish authorities release Solin and Mirhat's mother and end their pain.

The Story of 2 'Hevals' in Serekaniye!

Two ”Hevals” in Serekaniye by Amed Dicle 06.02.2013

Ela Qasim and Ubeyid Huseyin.

They did not knew each other from before, but after they met, they wrote history in Serekaniye, where they took part in the resistance against the armed gangs organized and sent by Turkey.

Ela Qasim was originally from Serekaniye. He was born and raised there. He got married there and was a young politician with two children. He was in his thirties and a senior member of Progressive Democratic Kurdish Party in Syria that was founded in 1962.

In a divided Kurdistan, western and northern Kurdistan is commonly referred to as ”serxet” (above the border) and ”binxet” (under/below the border) by Kurds. Serekaniye ”binxet” is a town divided by the Syrian-Turkish border.*

Ela Qasim was one of the children of the Kurdish nation who every day looked north, over the border, and tried to understand the meaning of the division.

After the revolution began in western Kurdistan a majority of those with different political ideals tried to unite around common ground.

In Serekaniye YPG was leading the resistance against the attacks. Ela Qasim was not a member of YPG. Neither was he a member of PYD, he had a different political opinion.

When the gangs started to attack on 16th of January, Ela Qasim joined the resistance together with other youth. On the 20th of January Ela Qasim, standing among a group of friends, held a speech in front of a camera. He declared that they would join the resistance that was lead by YPG.

He made the speech just outside the doorstep of his home. The short speech, which was held with a poetic tone, was occasionally interrupted by gunfire in the background.

Ela said:

”We are the children of this land, we are members of different political organizations, this is our ancient land and it is a holy duty to defend it. We are not attacking anyone, we are defending our lands in a peaceful way, but we do not accept that anyone comes here and tries to suppress us, we will not bow for anyone, and this is why we are here.

Just as the Kurdish people have been a peaceful people through history, we have historically also been a people that doesn’t accept suppression. That is why we are here. All through history it have been like this.

There is a price for freedom and we are here to pay that price. We are here to put a stop to a history where bloody tyrants tries to write our history. ”

Right after Ela Qasim held his short speech he bade farewell from his wife and his two children, he strapped his weapon over his shoulder and joined the ongoing battle not far away.

It may even been the first time he touched a weapon. It may not even crossed his mind that he one day may be was forced to take such action.

Ubeyid Hüseyin was not from Serekaniye.

He was from Amude. He grew up watching the lights from of Mardin from ”Serxet”, on the other side of the Turkish-Syrian border. Ubeyid was 37 years old, he was married and he had children.

He joined YPG which was created to defend the people of western Kurdistan from attacks. He had family members that earlier had joined the guerillas and lost their lives in northern Kurdistan. A picture of Abdullah Ocalan hung by the wall in their living room.

The only military training Ubeyid Hüseyin had was what he learned at the front in Serekaniye.

On the 24th January 2013 Serekaniye was going through its fiercest clashes.

Ela Qasim and Ubeyid Hüseyin had just met and become ”Hevals” as they fought in same trenches. Apart from Ela and Ubeyid, there were young Kurdish, Assyrian and Arab YPG fighters who were fighting against the gangs.

Ela Qasım and Ubeyid Hüseyin got seriously wounded by the attacks from the Turkish backed gangs this day. Blood from their wounds got mixed in the same pool of blood.

As Ela Qasim was moved from the battle zone to a hospital in, Ubeyid was wounded and captured alive. His body was found a week later. The very same day Ela Qasim lost his life at the hospital.

On the 3rd of February the Kurdish fighters were buried. Ela Qasim in Qamışlo and Ubeyid Huseyin in Dirbesiye.

Apart from internal and external opportunists all Kurdish organizations were present at the funerals. They were all there as Ela and Ubeyid, was declared as a symbol of national unity and common values of Kurdistan.

Yes, Ela Qasim was right. There is a price for freedom. But why is the price of unity so bitter?

* On the Turkish side of the border Serekaniye is officially named ”Ceylanpinar”, whereas on the Syrian side of the border the town is officially named ”Ras al-Ayn”.

Sakine Cansiz is history. She is the embodiment of the feminist face of the Kurdish liberation movement. She is the woman that spat in her torturer’s face, when she was in prison. She is the woman that did not scream when they cut her breasts. “As a militant of a just cause, I was ashamed to say ‘Ah’”, she said. She is the woman that did not betray her friends, even under the most severe torture. She is the woman with the scarlet-red hair. She was flooded with life, a fountain of love. She worked out every morning, she was an ethical vegetarian. She is the woman who, after all she went through, will go down in history as a firm believer in the just cause of the Kurdish movement, a person who never gave up on freedom. She is the woman whose passing away caused the deepest pain in my father’s life. I have never seen him cry like this before. She is not a terrorist. She is a hero. She is the woman who was even respected by her enemies. Her soft eyes, and her beautiful smile in spite of all the horror that she went through were a source of encouragement and strength for an entire nation. Her death is a loss for humanity. How sad that the world only got to know her in death. The last time I saw her felt like a farewell. I am proud to have known a piece of history and I will never forget the last words she said to me…

I did not know Fidan Dogan, because for me, she was Rojbin. I first met her when I was in elementary school. My family and I fell in love with her right away! She was so vivid, she always smiled. Her voice is still in my ears. We called her “troptisha heval”, because she taught my sister and me a French nursery rhyme called “Trois petits chats”, three little cats. We didn’t know what the words meant, but it was the biggest joy to clap our hands and laughing hysterically at the funny sound of the word “somnambule”, every time she played with us. My heart skipped a beat, every time I saw her. The last time we met was during the hunger strike in Strasbourg in April 2012. She was always so energetic, incredibly smart, and of course her smile was contagious. I would have hugged her firmer, kissed her, and I would have told her that I will never forget her smile, had I known what would happen to her in this city she so loved. She was buried on her birthday. But this just means that her death gave birth to thousands of Rojbins who will look up to her and keep her alive. She is not a terrorist. She is brilliant. She is our Rojbin…

I am sorry I never got to meet Leyla, or Axin, as friends call her. She was only a few years older than me, and every single person that I know who had met her speaks so highly of her. She, too, is not a terrorist. She is one of us. I am sorry we could not share any memories, and I am so sorry she died so young…

The morning after the murder, I woke up to the horrifying news that these three amazing Kurdish women, activists for our people, revolutionaries, had been assassinated. We drove to Paris and back over night, where hundreds, if not thousands of people were mourning together. Sakine and Fidan's parents had flown in from Turkey. They were not in the community center by the time I arrived, but my mother told me that Sakine's mother mourned:"My beautiful daughter, you loved your people so much - that is why you died..."

On Saturday, we walked as Kurds, Turks, Armenians, Tamils, Basques, Palestinians, Germans, French, socialists, communists, democrats, trade unionists, feminists, humanists, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and friends, as humans, united as one, in the streets of Paris. You have to earn and deserve such a crowd, and so they did, our beautiful heroines! For once, we besieged the capitol of this country that once colonized us. There were flowers, flags, pictures, and candles at Rue Lafayette, a place that will be damned and haunted forever by the promise we gave our comrades. I had a breakdown when we went to the crime site. I had promised myself to stay strong, because our friends would not have liked to see us like that, but I couldn’t help it. I still want to think that this is a nightmare, still want to believe that this cruelty did not happen.

The evil faces behind this murder did not “simply” take three precious activists of the Kurdish cause from us, the killing of women always means more. In a gendered war such as the war between the Turkish state and the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party), the planned assassination of three independent and free women must be understood in terms of violence against women. Murdering women like Sakine Cansiz, Rojbin, and Leyla, who stood up for her people and for women, is not just a political statement, it is a patriarchal murder too-feminicide!

Of all people, they, and especially Sakine Cansiz, deserved to see peace in Kurdistan. She devoted her existence to a just cause that she represented in its beauty. She endured years of torture in jail, but she never ever gave up on peace and justice, and if she didn't, then nobody has the right to give up. Nobody forced her, she freely chose to be a freedom fighter. She could have led an average life, she could have been a coward, if she wanted to, but she didn’t. She didn’t, because she is great. She makes me very proud to be Kurdish. I usually don’t say that I am a proud Kurd, but she made me realize once more what a cause, what a duty I inherited from my parents and from all the people, who suffer and die so I can have a self-determined life, a free life. I am proud to have known two of these immortal, amazing women. And in every step I take in life, I will make them live forever…

This is the fate of our nation. Our hearts barely recovered from the trauma of the massacre of Roboski, when Paris gave us a new wound. And every time, no matter how deep our pain, we are the “terrorists”. How dare anyone call these amazing, free personalities, admirable in every way, terrorists?
One time, a Kurdish newspaper in Germany was busted by the police. The police officers emptied the place, even confiscated the flowers and plants. My father angrily asked one of the officers: “Is this flower terrorist, too?!”

We live in a scary system, a blood-stained, ruthless system that executes our most precious friends, our most fearless fighters, and with them, our hopes. In this system, right and wrong are artificially constructed, as we praise economic hangmen and their corrupt fortresses of gold as role models, and murder those who dedicate their lives to justice, freedom, and truth. Personalities and institutions that are responsible for the greatest wars in the world, either by active participation or silence, receive peace awards. This world congratulates white collar killers on their latest bloodshed, as they step on the podium that consists of the backs of the poor, while it scares dissidents with prison, torture, and death. When nine bullets fell in Paris, the cradle of revolution, the latest strike on our cause was launched, but our pain will strengthen our fight. We promised that.

People see the order of the Middle East endangered and the Kurds, the biggest losers of the artificial, inorganic structure of the Middle East, now emerge as winners. Of course those that benefit from the status quo feel threatened. To sum it up, Turkey is forced to negotiate with the Kurds, Syrian Kurds are on the rise, Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq is by far more prosperous and democratic than any other part in Iraq, and even Iranian Kurdish parties start to unite. But the same colonial forces from last century want to repeat history. As I am writing this text, the city of Kirkuk is under attack by the Iraqi army. West Kurdistan is invaded by the Turkish army. Kurdish activists in Iran are executed regularly. The West is Turkey’s best pal and provides them with arms and feels no discomfort in looking the other way, while Turkey is the world champion when it comes to journalists in prison, when Kurdish children receive life sentences for throwing stones, when American drones are used to kill 34 innocent Kurdish villagers, and so on and on and on. We are used to that already.

We live in a scary system. People like to think ideally of America and Europe and their pretty little institutions, but look away when it comes to trading arms with one of the most dangerous states in the world. While Kurds are killed, tortured and imprisoned in Turkey, they are criminalized in Europe, where the states sell arms to Turkey and cover their buddy’s back. Police in different European countries recruit spies among Kurds. What does the pathetic United Nations even mean, if the same pattern of oppression is repeated over and over again? Covered up differently, modernized, and sold with a new name? It is not Marxist romanticism, and it is not a coincidence, when all conflicts always benefit the same powers and oppress the same people. We cynically sigh, when France promises to find the murderers of Paris. In an era of security, these women were watched by the police at all times, yet they were professionally executed. We don’t have pathetic conspiracy fantasies. We just stopped believing in the system a long time ago.

We don't want revenge, we want our human rights, we want peace to come. Kurds are not the evil "terrorists" the world wants them to be. Our cause is legitimate, our cause is just. In the recent years, the real faces behind random civilian killings in Turkey that were blamed on the PKK were revealed, and it turned out that the "deep state" of Turkey was responsible for these incitements to increase tensions between Turks and Kurds. My father has been tortured in prison, his friends were abducted and killed under torture. He has not seen his village in over 18 years. He has never held a gun in his hands, but they call him a “terrorist”. These are no Hollywood stories, these are real tragedies that every Kurd in every part of Kurdistan knows individual and unique stories about.

We are the nation that chants slogans at our funerals. We are the nation whose members, male, female, young, old, can give you an accurate definition of the word “fascism”, based on personal experience. We are the nation that has made several states finally agree on something: namely that no matter what, Kurds must lose. We are Seyh Said. Halabja. Sivas. Maras. Zilan, Dersim. Roboski. We are countless deaths. I am against war, but the PKK is the self-defense of the Kurds, it is a natural response, an outcome of all the pain the Kurds have suffered. It is the result of international policies that criminalize every step that Kurds make. It is a response of solidarity with cultural and physical genocides, great minds in torture dungeons, jailed parliamentarians, beaten mothers on peace protests, assassinated authors, fearless hunger strikers. Our existence has been denied by imperialist forces, who have shed the blood of our people with their tanks, and bombs and torturer minds, but who complain, when the Kurds decide that it would be just fair to raise a guerilla army to defend oneself against more national trauma.

The word "terror" has a lot to do with who is in power and who opposes the status quo that always benefits the same powers. A monopoly on the term “terrorism” is an inadequate and empty notion, especially when the greatest anti-terror agents have the dirtiest hands themselves. How fast people forget the spectacular alliances between the US and first-class dictators when it fits them. How fast people forget all the abducted people that mysteriously died, because they were killed by the Turkish state.

How fast people in Europe forget that the reason their countries host so many asylum-seeking Kurds is that their governments sell weapons to Turkey, while their politicians superficially criticize this ally that they hold closest to their hearts. How fragile is history’s memory. Organizations that are seen as terrorist, can be scratched off the terror list with only one signature, once it fits the new political situation of the big players. If you are a Kurd, a thought crime makes you terrorist in Turkey. A stone-throwing elementary school kid is terrorist. Ugur Kaymaz, a twelve-year old boy who went shopping with his father and was bloodily murdered was a terrorist.

Terror. So much terror. It must be a Kurdish gene! Look at these terrorist women in Paris, how free, self-confident, intellectual, open-minded, and nice they were – so loved by their people, they must have been awful- real monsters! If those media puppets that call Sakine, Rojbin, and Leyla terrorists had met these wonderful women, they would have scratched their heads on how such strong, independent, humane people, after all the tortures they endured, yet postive, yet struggling for peace, could be terrorist, yes, terrorists, the same way that “Al-Qaeda” is defined.

So pathetic. In fact, these bigots would have felt bad about their own pitiful existence, while these women really put meaning in their lives and sought justice. They would actually feel bad about their habits of complaining about small things in their luxurious lives, while Sakine heval grew even stronger after facing unimaginably terrible things and who yet believed in a peaceful solution, instead of bearing hatred. But I strongly believe that one day, these women will get the right respect that they deserve in the world.

Our nation and the wonderful, knowledgeable people who stand in solidarity with us in these dark times, know the greatness of our most recent loss very well. Sakine Cansiz was tortured, imprisoned, she fought in the mountains for a self-determined life, for my right to be free. It is incredible that a bullet in Paris took her life. It is not the death such a great personality deserves. Nobody deserves such a death, but she was supposed to see peace come, after all her sacrifices. She so optimistically faced the future...

It is not the time to be afraid. The times of timid Kurds are over. People who have been sitting comfortably and cowardly at home until now must occupy the streets. I remember how all these Turks in Germany suddenly admitted that they are Kurdish. Now it’s the time for everyone to bring this scared identity finding further and to claim the Kurdish struggle as the just cause that it is. How can we stand still in the face of a massacre against our identity? The bullets on Sakine, Rojbin, and Leyla hit all of us! The bombs of Roboski rained on all of us. We can no longer tolerate another loss. Our anger and pain must be channeled into activism. It is the time to realize that the fight must continue, we claim the death of these women as our responsibility to continue our struggle, because they did not die in vain. Sakine. Rojbin. Leyla. They will live forever. They dedicated their lives to our freedom and for peace in Kurdistan.

We have hope, in spite of everything. After the farewell ceremony on Tuesday in Paris, in which we, as women, took the lead to pay our respect and demand justice for this great loss of our nation and our humanity, chanting “Jin, Jîyan, Azadî” (Woman, Life, Freedom), we all knew that thousands of Sakines, Rojbins, Leylas were born. As their parents walked out of the ceremony hall, Sakine's father said: "You will not forget my daughter!" A good friend of mine and the fallen women’s, let us call her Zelal, gave me a firm hug after we said goodbye to our three beautiful flowers in Paris. She, too, is a hero. She hugged me, wiped my tears away and said: “Our struggle must go on.”

London, Paris, Kurdistan, Kurds Begin to Come out of Shock!

We woke up that morning into a grotesque nightmare, most of us are still in shock and in mourning but the reactions are beginning to make themselves heard in all parts of the world.

How the next days and weeks will pan out, noone knows, but I remain optimistic and have hope as the response, so far, is controlled and disciplined. From the Kurdish side, in Europe at least, I've seen a continued commitment to the negotiation process.

But I've also seen a total contempt for the 'process' which, increasingly, many many people believe is nothing but a cover for pursuing Turkey's real aim of total annihilation of the Kurdish freedom movement's leadership.

Let's hope both sides can hold this together, that the murderers be found and that there are no more provocations or murderous dirty operations.

IN MEMORY OF OUR FRIENDS:

SAKINE CANZIZ, FIDAN DOGAN, AND LEYLA SÖYLEMEZ

It was with shock and grief we received the horrible news about the deaths of our dear friends who were massacred in Paris today in the most grotesque way. Sakine Canziz, the co-founder of the PKK in 1978 holds a crucial role in the party. Fidan Dogan (Rojbin), a Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) member from Paris, has also been working closely alongside the EUTCC for many years and her work has been very important to our international work for the Kurds.

The assassination of the three highly valued female politicians is a coup against the organised negotiation talks taking place on Imrali between the Turkish state and the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. The Paris-tragedy shows that the “deep dark forces”, the enemies of peace, are opposing the new political process to such a degree that they found it necessary to assassinate three Kurdish female politicians who were working for a solution and for peace.

French authorities should immediately stop the criminalisation of Kurds working for a peaceful settlement to the Kurdish problem. The Kurds in France and in the rest of Europe constitute no threat to the authorities in the countries they live. On the contrary, they are working firmly towards a solution to the problems in Turkey and should be rewarded instead of being criminalised, persecuted, incarcerated as the Kurdish diplomat Adem Uzun, or killed. The reason of the killings and the forces behind are still to be unveiled – and they will be. These people should know that such killings or whatever provocation they might conduct in the future will not stop the ongoing peace process. Even the deaths of Sakine, Fidan and Leyla will not scare other Kurds to continue on the hopeful road to peace.

The EUTCC hereby send their sincere and deep-felt condolences to the families of Sakine, Fidan and Leyla, and extend it to the Kurdish people all over the world. Evil forces in whatever shape it takes; will never defeat the Kurdish people’s genuine will to freedom – it only empowers them to work harder to obtain it.

Sakine Canziz, Fidan Dogan and Leyla Söylemez’s tireless work for the Kurdish people will forever stand as a monument of their memory.
