HP announces the winners of the 2009 Innovation in Education Grant Initiative in South Africa

Pretoria, Gauteng - October 7, 2009 – Today, HP South Africa announced the 2009 winners of the Innovation in Education Grant Initiative, which rewards secondary schools and universities for their revolutionary teaching and learning projects. This year’s winners include six academic institutions from across South Africa out of 50 winners across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and 150 winners world-wide.

To identify South Africa’s most innovative schools and universities, HP South Africa worked in partnership with the Department of Education. Overall, fifteen South African secondary schools and universities were shortlisted in the global grant initiative. A panel of HP and education experts evaluated the submissions and selected those that best integrated technology at the intersection of teaching and learning to foster innovation in education.

Gois Fouché, acting Managing Director of HP South Africa, said, “The grant initiative, targeting innovation within the education sector, is vital to developing the next generation of high-tech innovators who will be key to South Africa’s future growth. The institutions we are honouring today are leaders - not just in South Africa - but globally, and we should all be incredibly proud of their achievements.”

South Africa’s winning schools and universities were awarded mobile technology solutions, including tablet PCs, laptops, printers and access points, as well as a cash donation to the total value of US$100,000 (≈ R750, 000) (HP List Price). In addition, winners will be invited to attend the global HP Innovation in Education Worldwide Summit in February 2010, where they will meet faculty members from around the world who are similarly engaged in using technology to transform teaching and learning. Here, they will be able to share ideas and best practices with their peers from around the world in areas such as online learning, virtual worlds and simulations.

South Africa’s 2009 winners of the HP Innovation in Education Grant Initiative are:

• Bokamoso Science & Technology Education Centre, Polokwane (2009 - Secondary Ed) for its creation of the Bokamoso Science & Technology Education Centre (BOSTEC) – HP Innovation Centre project, a science centre based in the rural community of Limpopo Province

• Esayidi FET Public College, Port Shepstone (2009 - Higher Ed) for the institution’s Technologically Expanding Bridges of Opportunity project

• Mnambithi FET College, Ladysmith (2009 - Secondary Ed) for its project to introduce tablet PCs to the local community

• Osizweni Education & Development Centre, Secunda (2009 - Secondary Ed) for its HP Interactive Digital Classroom project

• University of Fort Hare, Alice (2009 - Higher Ed) for its Academic Support for Science, Engineering, Technology project (FOSST Discovery Centre, University of Fort Hare)

• University of the Western Cape, Bellville (2009 - Higher Ed) for its Undergraduate Research Training in Computer Sciences

HP’s ultimate objective is to foster future leaders in the disciplines vital to the global economy. The grants given to secondary schools aim to improve student achievement by using technology to redesign the learning experience; while for universities, the aim is to specifically enhance the engineering, computer science and IT degree programmes. ”Together with the Departments of Education and Science and Technology, I believe we are making a real contribution to the future of South Africa,” Fouché said

Among the winners, Mnambithi FET College was selected for its project that will introduce tablet PC's to locals. Within the college, this project will be used to engage learners in group sessions within the engineering faculty where design and technology subjects can now be interactively studied. CAD software for electrical and mechanical faculties will be loaded and used in the setup laboratories. All faculties will be introduced to methods web communications and online web chatting to enable them to use these facilities in all work situations as well.
