A lot of it is Radiohead and Antony, except 30 years earlier. A fascinating mix of Disco, Philip Glass avant-garde, and electronica. Here is a recent mix because I can't find the original on youtube.

From the left as from the right; from North, East, West and even from the South. Take this little gem from Frank Bruni in the NYTimes.com. Why is Portugal (and Spain and Argentina) much less expected to approve gay marriage than Holland and Belgium, or any "Scandinavian-style bastion of social progressivism"? This sort of thinking is nothing more than bigotry, probably an unquestioned vestige of the age-old anti-catholic bigotry pervasive in protestant-dominated cultures. None of these "second-class" countries needs to show a "badge of sophistication" to any others. All countries are progressive in some causes and conservative in others. Portugal was the first country in the World to abolish the death penalty in the 19th century, for instance. And all those bastions of progressivism? Everyone has skeletons. Hey, apartheid is a dutch word. Tropicalia is a Portuguese word. The US just killed Troy Davis. So go give yourself a "badge of sophistication".
All things, including the species to which you belong, have evolved over vast stretches of time. The evolution is random, though in the case of living organisms, it involves a principle of natural selection. That is, species that are suited to survive and to reproduce successfully, endure, at least for a time; those that are not so well suited, die off quickly. But nothing — from our own species, to the planet on which we live, to the sun that lights our day — lasts forever. Only the atoms are immortal ..."
Ideas written more than 2000 years ago by Lucretius, here paraphrased by Greenblatt with a modern lens in his book: Lucretius, Man Of Modern Mystery @ NPR. Michael Lewis delves too much into the perceived scatological nature of German culture, which, though curious, is really his largely unsubstantiated opinion. He also shows a lack of knowledge of European reality, and so I assume of Germany (e.g. he seemed to have been unaware that most Europeans speak English, let alone the surfacy understanding of the economical crisis in the periphery countries...). Nonetheless the article exposes a very interesting clash between the German obsession with rules and American doublethink. Lewis misses the connection between German rule-driven behavior and moral authority, though. German investment bankers believed on the triple-A ratings of complex investment bonds based on subprime loans issued by Moody's and S&P, because of the moral authority America has on the German psyche. Certainly, if these american companies gave these ratings, they had to be true. The thing is, German investors would certainly not have believed those ratings if they had been issued by Greek companies, no matter how much Germans may like rules... So, while the american financial world is so very based on the doublethink inherent in these ratings---simultaneously believing they are accurate and risky, since these companies stand to gain from their very own ratings---German perception of the USA is what lead German investment bankers to follow the simple rule: excellent (American) rating=safe investment---no need to ask further questions or study the safety of the investment. This also explains why the ECB insisted on American ratings for regulating the Euro member states.

Now, while Wall Street bankers (and Seemingly, Michael Lewis) may laugh at the German investors---those "ultimate patsies" as Lewis puts it---a big loss of this affair is undoubtedly the loss of American moral authority in the German psyche.

self-interest misunderstood: Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%

Great read: "Alexis de Tocqueville once described what he saw as a chief part of the peculiar genius of American society—something he called “self-interest properly understood.” The last two words were the key. Everyone possesses self-interest in a narrow sense: I want what’s good for me right now! Self-interest “properly understood” is different. It means appreciating that paying attention to everyone else’s self-interest—in other words, the common welfare—is in fact a precondition for one’s own ultimate well-being. It is indeed time to take action. In particular, I think we need to take action for sanity and against guns. I am always surprised at how much people have been desensitized to the vision of a weapon. We should peacefully demonstrate our desire to not cohabit with guns. One obvious way to demonstrate this would be to take all our clothes off in the presence of people with unconcealed weapons (e.g. in Arizona). After all, isn't it insane that people are much more shocked by nakedness than guns? A penis and a vagina cannot cause the type of horror that went on in the Giffords massacre, including the slaying of a 9-year old.

I think we should show the insanity of this reality, indeed that the emperor has no clothes, by peacefully demonstrating with our bodies in the presence of guns.

Museum of Financial and War Technology

After visiting the Air and Space Museum with the family this Thanksgiving in DC, I could not help notice how weirdly dated everything seemed. How something so exciting from my early childhood is now a dated relic of a promised, but never quite materialized future. This got me thinking about what the future actually happened to be. And so, to be truthful to what actually happened, the Mall should now substitute the Air and Space museum, with a Museum for Financial and War Technology... Isn't there where most of money and brains went? Sure, there should be a museum for entertainment and computer technology, but that one should be on the West Coast...

Exceptionalism

WOW. I usually dislike Friedman for his lack depth; but in this piece, and the quote below, show how his lack of subtlety can be used to powerfully explain the obvious:

"But the Americans are oblivious. They travel abroad so rarely that they don’t see how far they are falling behind. Which is why we at the embassy find it funny that Americans are now fighting over how “exceptional” they are. Once again, we are not making this up. On the front page of The Washington Post on Monday there was an article noting that Republicans Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee are denouncing Obama for denying “American exceptionalism.” The Americans have replaced working to be exceptional with talking about how exceptional they still are. They don’t seem to understand that you can’t declare yourself “exceptional,” only others can bestow that adjective upon you."

I also love: "[...] America’s politicians are mostly lawyers — not engineers or scientists like ours — so they’ll just say crazy things about science and nobody calls them on it."

See the full article @ From WikiChina - NYTimes.com

Delusions

Why does our press refer to super-rich Russians as oligarchs, and to super-rich western Europeans and Americans as billionaires? Os portugueses, na sua infinita e pacata desordem existencial, acham tudo "normal" e encolhem os ombros. [...]. Este é o maior fracasso da democracia portuguesa e contra isto o PS e o PSD que fizeram? Having my old vinyl collection for this time and listening to it near the Ocean, made me of course go down memory lane. Interesting that some of the things that echo back to mind from the past are not necessarily the things I did most when younger. These echos are what I had in mind when I prepared this long mix. These are sounds that echoed this year back to my mind from the years between 75 and 85. The point was not at all to catalog those years, as I ended up not including artists and tracks that meant a lot to me back then and still do (Miles Davis, Eurythmics, Prince, etc, etc.) But these echoed back, and here they are. I am going to miss this life.

Track Listing:
01 - The Selecter - On My Radio
02 - New Adventures - Come on
03 - The Sparks - This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us
04 - Rod Stewart - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?
05 - Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue
06 - David Bowie - Fascination
07 - Pointer Sisters - How Long (betcha' got a woman on the side)?
08 - McFadden & Whitehead - Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now
09 - Amanda Lear - Fashion Pack
10 - Santa Esmeralda - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
11 - The Dukes (Bugatty & Musker) - Thank you for the party
12 - Giorgio Moroder - Utopia
13 - Space - Just Blue
14 - Patrick Cowley - Tech No Logical World
15 - Freeez - I.O.U
16 - Heaven 17 - Let Me Go
17 - The Human League - Love Action (I Believe In Love)
18 - Yazoo - Sweet Thing
19 - The Tubes - Turn Me On
20 - Blondie - Eat to the Beat
21 - The Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop
22 - Hazel O'Connor - Big Brother
23 - Lene Lovich - Lucky Number
24 - Toyah - Be Proud, Be Loud, Be Heard
25 - Spandau Ballet - To Cut A Long Story Short (Long Mix)
26 - Classix Nouveaux - Never Again (The Days Time Erased)
27 - Duran Duran - Girls On Film (Night Mix)
28 - Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes (Annihilation Mix)
29 - ABC - How to be a Zillionaire (Wall St. Mix)
30 - Nina Hagen - Ich Weiss Es Wird Einmal Ein Wunder Geschehen
31 - Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'till You Get Enough (12'' Edit)
32 - France Joli - Gonna Get Over You
33 - Cliff Richard - We don't talk anymore
34 - The Rolling Stones - Miss You (Dance Version)
35 - Martha And The Muffins - Echo Beach
36 - The Police - So Lonely
37 - Echo And The Bunneymen - Never Stop (Discotheque)
38 - John Cooper Clarke - Beasley Street
39 - New Order - Every little counts
