Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #91

The Australian White Ibis is a wading bird of the ibis family Threskiornithidae, also known as the "Sheep bird" and it is widespread across much of Australia. It has a predominantly white plumage with a bare, black head, long downcurved bill and black legs. Historically rare in urban areas, the Australian White Ibis has immigrated to urban areas of the east coast in increasing numbers since the late 1970s; it is now commonly seen in Wollongong, Sydney, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Townsville. Debate continues on whether to consider it a pest or vulnerable species. Populations have disappeared from natural breeding areas such as the Macquarie Marshes in northwestern New South Wales. Despite this, the species has been culled in parts of Sydney due to their smell and at times obtrusive nature [excerpt from Wikipedia]

Today celebrates Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year. "Happy Valentine's Day & Gung Hoi Fat Choi" squawked the smelly obtrusive ibis. He did. I'm quite sure of it. I wanted to work the V-Day & CNY theme into my shadow shots today. And that's the best I could do. So lucky to have stumbled upon a talking ibis.

Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #90

These photos were taken at QPAC (Queensland Perfoming Arts Centre) and the first is a cafe at the far right of the building. I didn't stop in at that cafe because all the green was making me dizzy. The second was taken while enjoying a coffee at the other cafe towards the left end of the building. I liked looking up at all of the coloured lights reflected in the glass windows of QPAC. I also very much liked their caramel tarts. Yummy!

Some photos from my etsy shop have been included on some lovely sites over the last couple of weeks, for which I'm very grateful. Thanks to Julia for the feature on Ramblings of a Gallivanting Girl, and to Terri for the inclusion on Living A Handmade Life. Also thank you to Anna from Much Love for the opportunity to have one of my photos displayed as part of her wonderful Much Love Monday project. A little while back I was contacted with regards to one of my photos on Flickr being shortlisted for inclusion in the Schmap Brisbane Guide and I was just informed of it being chosen and published in the 10th edition. Yay! And a big thanks to Anne from Frayed at the Edge for passing a Kreativ Blogger award my way. I really didn't mean for this ramble to turn into some exercise in tootin' my own horn. Really I didn't. Little acknowledgements such as those mentioned above make me very happy and I am extremely grateful for any that come my way. And I simply wanted to share my happiness. With you. Because happiness is a good thing to share.

Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #88

My photos this week were inspired by Sam's gorgeous shadow shot from last week of Moreton Bay Fig trees in Sydney. Here is a relative of the Moreton Bay Fig tree. A Banyan Fig tree in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens

"Planted in the 1870s and a native to India, the Banyan Fig acquired its name from the Hindu merchant caste, the Banyans, who set up their stalls under the shelter of the expansive tree. It is renowned for its vast growth and sends down aerial roots to support the large branches. These roots eventually develop into a new trunk and so the tree spreads - one in India covering 1.5 ha with over 1000 subsidiary trunks. A Hindu belief was that the Brahma was turned into a Banyan tree and his spirit lives on in these trees. Because of this belief they are encouraged to grow and are rarely pruned, even though Banyans can cause damage to Temples and buildings" - [this information was sourced from the sign beside the tree]

Shadow Shot Sunday can be both fun AND educational. This educational slant brought back memories of being herded through these gardens countless times as a kid on school excursions. It's so much more fun exploring now without the dinky uniform. And without an annoying classmate called Anthony continually pulling my hair for the entire duration between little lunch and big lunch. And that time Richard pushed Joanne into the duck pond. Well, ok, Richard pushing Joanne into the duck pond was a little bit funny. The ducks thought so. I remember them quacking up! (My silly jokes haven't matured much since my school days)

Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #87

Last Sunday I mentioned the long stint of rain we had the previous week. This week has predominately been blue skies and high temps. And fish. And chips. And enjoying some cool ocean breezes at Wynnum Manly.

* Just a little note for shadow shooters who have multiple blogs and are participating with more than one blog: Feel free to enter the links of all blogs you've posted your shadow shots to, but please only do this if the photos are not the same on each of your blogs. If you post the exact same image on more than one blog, it would be very much appreciated if you only entered the one blog url into Mr Linky. Thanks a bunch!

While on the subject of adding links to Mr Linky, I'd like to direct you to a post by BLOGitse HERE with regards to entering blog urls vs. permalinks. It will remain up to you as to which you add as I'm not going to make it a rule one way or another. I can suggest that if you are a prolific blogger and post many times a day and join in many memes it would be easiest for people to find your specific submissions by adding permalinks to the memes you participate in. Especially so if you enter a meme early and other participants enter the day after (considering most are open for at least 2 days to accomodate for the different timezones). And then also consider that those who have entered later may not have time to visit fellow participants immediately. A prolific blogger may have published so many posts by this time that the original one linked for the meme may no longer even be on the front page of the blog. For those who blog once a day or less, adding a standard blog url rather than a permalink, I don't believe would be at all problematic for other participants finding your post. Something to think about. In the end it's your call.

Here's my Shadow Shot Sunday #77

I took my shadow shot earlier this week while watching a film at the Gallery of Modern Art. The short film, A Begger Woman (Lagos) is a performance art piece by Korean born, New York based artist Kim Sooja.

"In the isolation of her artwork, Kim seeks out a generalized correspondence with the world, but on her own terms and from her own experience. Her allegories are successful because they originate, despite seeming otherwise, from a highly individuated sense of purpose. In a way, Kim's anonymity is a subterfuge, a manner of relating a sense of self whose boundaries are so extended as to do away with the notions of limit entirely. The odd thing about Kim's isolation is that it in fact completely engages with her audience; just as she offers solitude as a way of emphasizing universal implications, so she underscores her autonomy as a way of proceeding toward a wide involvement with others. Indeed, her lonely actions appear to call for help; in the video A Beggar Woman, done in Lagos in 2001, she sits crosslegged, her palm extended for alms. Someone gives her some change, and the muteness of the scene intensifies the artist's vulnerability. We read the interaction as evidence of need everywhere; in her dramatization of want, Kim reduces herself, and us as well, to an egoless composite of desires, an enactment of utter poverty." ~ [excerpt from Conditions of Anonymity: The Performance Art of Kim Sooja by Jonathan Goodman]

Now moving off the topic of monstrosity to generosity! The local arty crafty folk of this town known as BrisStyle are currently running a fun competition. BrisStyle wants you, yes YOU, to help pick a favourite design to have printed on a limited edition run of BrisStyle Market Tote bags. This is the design I voted for. A difficult choice as all entries appealed to me but there was something about this particular design that just totally had me hooked. I love it! It's by the very talented artist Sally Flynn.

It's the first of November today and I can't believe it's almost the end of the year. Being November I thought of the pretty song by Sarah Blasko called Sweet November & wanted to share it here. I went searching youtube for it & then found her wonderful cover of Xanadu so I've posted that one instead:

I told a tiny fib. I didn't post Xanadu instead of Sweet November after all. I really like Sarah Blasko so a double dose can only be a good thing. I'm not sure if Sarah Blasko is very well known outside of Australia, but if you've not heard her then have a listen because she has an amazingly sweet and lovely voice. Truly.

In hindsight I probably should have included some scary death metal music to fit the theme of my spooky shadows. That musical genre isn't really my cup of tea I'm afraid. And hindsight is way overrated anyway.

Here's my Shadow Shot(s) Sunday #72

I've walked past this fancy building along Ann Street in Fortitude Valley countless times but it was only this week after stepping out from the pub directly opposite that I really noticed all of those intricate shadows.
And yes, the pub lunch was very nice. The Royal George World's Best Pub Lunch Only $6 deal is a goodie!

Behind that waterfall window I could see a desk and a computer. Couldn't see anybody sitting at the desk. Maybe they were also on their lunch break. I've no idea what kind of business this fancy building houses.

Nothing quite sums up spring like gigantic strawberry icecreams! These treats were decorating the grounds of a mini carnival set up in Southbank's Cultural Forecourt as part of the 3 week long Brisbane Festival 2009 celebrations. The popular annual festival ended yesterday. Phooey. It sure was fun while it lasted!

I've noticed quite a few new people joining in SSS over the last month, so a big thanks to the newbies for playing along! And of course many thanks to the regular bunch of sweet shadow shooters who have been keeping this little shadowy thing chuggin' along in such a fun way for so long! As some of you are aware I try to include different participants in the collages each week. I have a crazy little system that sometimes works. And sometimes not. I'm sure I often muddle it up, so if you find that I haven't included one of your photos for a while and you'd like me to, please just let me know. Keep shootin' those glorious shadows! xox
