And make no mistake-the thought is terrifying! If hell is anything like the horrendous, endless torture that's been described to me, I certainly wouldn't want to end up there because I mistakenly believed that there wasn't a god.

If hell is really about judgement from a just God, you shouldn't be able to end up there over a mistake. Nonetheless, the problem with this is that when you ask Christians what you can do to be saved, you get different answers. Ultimately, it seems that Christians are rolling the dice on this issue just as much as we are. And this is where we run into the many problems with the Bible. It would seem that turning to the Bible would provide the simple answer, especially on such an important subject as avoiding Hell, but the instructions on how to actually be saved are unclear. And it doesn't seem like this is a topic that God should want to be vague about.

The Bible does clearly state that no one can get to Heaven through works and that you must go through Christ, but what do those things actually mean? We are ultimately left with nothing but speculation, hoping to have the right answer when it counts. It's a hell of a gamble.

The version of being saved that I was taught is that you pray to Jesus to save you. All it takes is that one prayer. As long as you are authentic and humble, you're pretty much good. That sounds fine, but one little prayer certainly doesn't seem like you've done anything to draw closer to Christ. On the other hand, it seems that the idea that you must live a Christ like life contradicts the Bible when it says that works do not get you into Heaven. Then there are those who say that you must have a relationship with Christ to reach Heaven. Even Christians will admit that God is distant or silent at times, sometimes years. What if someone dies during one of those periods where God has decided to check out for a little bit while still expecting unwavering loyalty in return? What if someone dies while experiencing a crisis of faith? Does the rest of how they lived not matter because their relationship with Christ suffered?

At the end of the day, it's all just guesses. If God had half the love for us that Christians claim He does, we wouldn't be left to just guess. We would have a sense of security and hope and know that we are not just taking a leap of faith on a fairytale. You're not left with security and hope. You're left with faith. In other words, you're hoping you picked the right answer. How is that any less of a gamble on eternal suffering than the gamble that atheists are taking?

#atheism #salvation #god #eternity #christianity #hell #heaven #afterlife

Why Can't Businesses Make Their Own Choices?

I might have my complaints about Georgia and I'm not always proud of this very red state, but I don't think anything makes me shake my head quite like California.

Maybe I'm just a rebel. Maybe I'm a little out there, but I'm just not a fan of state governments sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.

I came across this article about a bill that is about to go into effect in California, which would ban department stores from having their toy displays separated by gender.

California Seeks Gender Neutral Displays in Large Stores | California News | US News

It is absolutely absurd that a bill was presented in the first place in regards to how department stores can display their products. The only possible reason that that would make sense is if certain types of displays were unsafe and stores continued to use them anyway. In that instance, I could see the law getting involved. Or if a store was turning people away based on their race. I could see the law getting involved in that situation, but to make a law restricting what decisions that a business can make regarding what kind of products they carry or how they display it just to push a petty agenda is insane. And yes, it is a petty agenda.

First of all, with everything going on in this world, how the hell is this anyone's priority? Seriously. If this is what you are doing with your time as a lawmaker, then why are you a lawmaker? There are plenty of kids with plenty of stories. To pick a toy display issue as a priority is an...interesting choice.

Secondly, it seems that everyone behind this bill has a very twisted view of what the word "forced" means. The bill became an idea when a 9 year old named Britten said she felt "uncomfortable" going into the boys section because it wasn't designed for girls. (You can read more about her story here. 9-Year-Old Inspires Bill to Ban Gender-Based Toy Sections (spectrumnews1.com) ) The next thing you know, a lawmaker who felt inspired by the story starts going on about how kids shouldn't be forced to pick their toys based on gender. He then proceeded to draft legislation that would force stores to comply with his view of how things should be displayed in their stores.

So to sum up, no force was used on this girl in any way to make her or her family buy girl toys, and in response to this terribly offensive, no force situation, the people who are opposed to people being forced to view things are certain way are using the law to try to force people to view things a certain way. What an absolute joke.

Here is my opinion on toys-I think it is ridiculous when parents freak out about their kids only having toys that were designed based on gender. I don't agree with parents telling their kids what they have to like, which takes all the fun out of toy shopping anyway, instead of letting them decide for themselves what they actually like and what they are interested in. And I do think that it's harmful when kids have to constantly try to act like whatever their parents are trying to mold them into. However, that doesn't change my opinion about the role of government. Yes, kids should be kids, but a business should be run how the business owners want that business to be run. To create a law that tells businesses how to display toys because one kid felt uncomfortable is absolutely nuts! It's none of the government's concern! Business owners should be able to make these kinds of decisions without government intervention and parents should be able to decide for themselves if they want to take their business to stores that don't have gender neutral displays.

Why is it so controversial to think that businesses should be able to make their own choices? As long as a company is not violating anyone else's freedoms, the law shouldn't be involved. Not even a little bit. Take mask policies, for example. Most people who oppose mask requirements in stores argue that customers should have the freedom to determine for themselves if they want to wear a mask. Since when does freedom mean that you are entitled to be on any property or visit any business you want to without having to follow any of the policies that the store has in place? What about the freedom of business owners? It's their property. Don't they have a right to say what behaviors are acceptable on their own property?

Or consider vaccine requirements. Florida can be just as ridiculous as California sometimes. And it is ridiculous that the governor saw fit to tell cruises whether or not they're allowed to require vaccination in order for customers to come aboard. First of all, let's not forget the unique situation the pandemic has put cruise ships through. People were stranded on board during outbreaks. Would you want to be stranded on a ship because there was an outbreak? Wouldn't you want to do something to avoid people from being trapped at sea once a vaccine was available? Even if you don't consider those things, of course these companies should be able to decide this for themselves. They should absolutely be able to determine how their own ships are used. Like the little girl in the department store, whether or not DeSantis feels "uncomfortable" about it really has nothing to do with it.

The government has bigger things to worry about in these cases. I see no reason why they should keep sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.

Negative Covid Tests Are Too Far!!

Is there anything about Covid that hasn't become absolutely political? Is there anything-anything at all-that can be said on the subject that is not going to draw outrage from someone?

If you say you're getting vaccinated, someone is going to call you a sheep. If you say you won't, someone will accuse you of not caring about other people's lives. If you own a business, people will be mad at you for enforcing a mask policy, but if you don't require masks the other group of people will be mad at you. There really doesn't seem to be any way to win. It's sad and it's also part of what makes all of this confusing. Any attempt to have a real conversation about Covid, the vaccines, or Covid precautions is met with vitriol. How are you supposed to make a real decision about your health when just trying to ask questions or express a viewpoint about any of the information you are given immediately makes you an enemy to so many people?

Covid has hit several family members recently, so a lot of this has been on my mind lately. And on Facebook I saw a picture posted on Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo's page. It was two negative Covid tests. It is ridiculous that there was backlash to that. That is absolutely absurd. Let's review some of the comments.

Jimmy C. wrote, "Sorry but please keep personal life choices and such to private. We the public/fans don't need to know personal life choices. That is my suggestion for all."

Well, Jimmy, how is it a personal choice to have Covid or not have Covid? Is that how it works? Do viruses just go around asking people if they would like to participate and move on if they say they're not interested?

David A. wrote, "Keep your medical record in your medical record Pat Benatar & Neil Geraldo are you looking for a position on the high moral ground. Well let me tell you there isn't one. Luddites like you posting this stupidity not only shows a lack of social sensitivity but also a lack of common sense."

Well, foks, there you have it! It's stupid to not have Covid and then tell anyone that your test was negative.

I replied to David by saying that it is their choice what they choose to share. His response was "It is part of a narrative you fool. No one is interested. It's creating more division in our community. Musicians should know better."

It really amazes me how many people going around calling people sheep or idiots or fools and then claim that they're super duper concerned about division. Yeah. Can't have that! Also, he seems pretty opinionated on this topic for someone who claims that no one is.

Cindy M. wrote, "I would rather not know a person's political affiliations or if they are inoculated or not."

Show of hands. How many people think this person just announced that they're a Republican? Her statements aside, there should be nothing political about posting that you had a negative result from a Covid test. Nothing at all.

Cindy S. wrote, "What happened to dr patients confidential information"

I can't even tell if that's a serious question.

But the point is this. Covid has made uncontroversial things-like telling someone you're not sick-controversial. And heaven forbid you have a negative opinion about the CDC.

People have a right to respond to anything you post and I think that open discussion is important, but it's ridiculous that every single little thing you could possibly say about Covid is met with backlash, hatred, vitriol. Anything you say is a political statement or supposedly an endorsement of politicians you might not actually agree with. I really wish that would change.

Coming up this week...

I've been through a lot of changes the past few months. Things have been very stressful and hectic. I'm behind on bills, content, several goals, etc. Now that I'm mostly settled, here's what's coming up!

For September, I will be uploading every single day! I originally wanted to do this in August, but choosing that kind of goal for a moving month was not a bright idea in the first place.

For my Youtube channel "Let's Discuss with Eliza" I will be back to my regular upload schedule of Sunday and Monday nights. Most of these videos will be premieres at 8 pm EST. When I have additional videos that I want to upload they go up on Saturdays.

For my channel "Planning with Eliza" I post planning, budgeting, and cash envelope stuffing videos. I do not currently have an upload schedule. It's pretty much just a matter of when I get around to it. It's really more of a therapeutic thing for me right now and I'm just having fun with it. While I'd like to do much more decorative spreads, budgeting is a big part of my planning and my channel.

I started a third YouTube channel as well, but "Eliza's Media Hot Takes" has been a little neglected. I've only uploaded four videos and I honestly don't know when the next one will be up. It requires more editing, so the amount of time it takes is a big part of why I haven't made it a higher priority right now. Going forward I'd like to upload one to two times a month, but I'm not committing to anything just yet.

So with a blog that I'll be updating daily for the month and three YouTube channels that are behind schedule, I have plenty of work cut out for myself. After how August went, I'm grateful to have this much on my plate to keep me busy. The last thing I need right now is to sit around with nothing to do, thinking about all the things that have not gone my way recently.

I Might Quit the Job I Just Took

This month has been rough....from moving to transportation issues to a job search that took way too long, it has been a true nightmare.

Now, as far as the move is concerned, I am happy where I am, but I have just been facing problem after problem and it's been overwhelming. First, there were several things that happened that basically ate through my savings, which were a little over $3,000. It's never a good sign when your emergency savings gets emptied. Next, my car broke down and I didn't have the money to fix it. So on top of already having my savings wiped out, I wasn't able to work right up until moving day like I planned. Since the transportation issue wasn't worked out, I wasn't able to get to the job interviews I had planned near my new place. I tried to just suck it up and accept that I would have to work from home. I'm not used to that and I did not have much luck looking for that kind of work, but I really can't compete with people who have years of experience in data entry or customer service in remote jobs. Then, my only real break happened. After about a week of trying to find work from home options, a family member contacted me and said I could use their spare vehicle until I could afford to fix mine. I was so relieved. I immediately started filling out applications for jobs I would actually drive to. And I figured I would have work lined up in a day or two. Everyone says that they are desperately hiring, that they really need people. My plan was to basically accept whatever job offer came my way first. If I didn't like it I could always search for another job later on, but I needed money NOW! I was already driving a vehicle I only had access to through pure charity and I borrowed money last week so I could buy groceries. I was at a point where I would take anything.

That brings me to accepting my first job here. At that point I had been unemployed for about two and a half weeks. That's a lot of time to not be working for someone who already burned through their savings, needs to borrow money for food, and is using a borrowed car.

I was extremely disappointed with my job search by the time this company called me. I was desperate for work. I couldn't believe that I was still looking for a job, but the issues I had run into were that jobs either wanted 24/7 availability or that the company was just dragging their feet and taking forever to interview, hire, and schedule people. The second job I got I love, but there's no reason for it to take a week and a half to get through all those steps if you really need help as badly as you claim.

Anyway, the first job has several strikes at this point. When they called me almost two weeks after I applied I was a little surprised. I figured that I had already been passed over for the job. That was strike one. Just how long was this company expecting me to sit around hoping that they would call me for a little part time retail job? Don't these companies realize that if they wait forever to call they can lose the opportunity to hire people who are actively seeking employment and filling out applications every day?

Next, after my interview I was offered ten dollars an hour. That's strike two. I wanted to ask for more right then and there, but realistically, if someone is offering you ten as an hourly wage you're not going to be able to talk them into fourteen or fifteen. You might be able to talk them up a quarter, but that's probably about it. Ten is just not a competitive wage and if I wasn't so desperate it would have been a deal breaker, but I needed to work and I accepted the position.

Next, I go to orientation for my first paid day of work. I have to sit through almost four hours of training videos. I'm sorry, but that's strike three. I don't learn that way. These videos just turn your brain into mush. They are a waste of time and they don't really teach people. I'm not a big fan of companies wasting time just for the heck of it.

Next, we have a listening problem right off the bat. I was asked for my availability and said that I would work every day except for Thursday. Within minutes, I was given my schedule for the rest of the week. I am scheduled for Thursday and Friday. That's strike four. In this case, it may very well have been an honest mistake. Maybe I was misheard, but I have had so many scheduling issues at other jobs that I now have very low tolerance for this type of thing. And any manager can tell you they will fix it. It doesn't mean that they actually will. And if they don't you're still responsible for what you were scheduled, even if you previously communicated that you didn't have the availability for it. I'm not gonna be set up to get in trouble by any job. I've had enough of that.

This job already has several strikes against it. I have a bad feeling about this job. It doesn't seem like it's going to work out, but hey, I needed work, so I figured that I better suck it up and give it a chance.

Then I have a terrible day at work. The workload at this store is pretty ridiculous. And it's not ridiculous because that's just how business goes sometimes. It's ridiculous because that's how the company wants things to be. That's strike four. I have no respect for a company that gives people an insane workload just because they think they can. The store was overwhelmed with product. We didn't need anything. Not one more thing in that store, but I was expected to completely redo entire shelving units over and over and over again to make room for probably about a thousand or so dollars worth of products. And I can't just move things around the shelf. Everything has to be a certain way. Now, it's normal for retail sores to have specific rules about how products can be displayed, but these rules were excessive and made it really difficult to get the job done. Even aside from that, it's a lot of work to be constantly moving and replacing breakable, often heavy, items.

That is way too many rules for a job that involved way too much work for ten dollars an hour. Ten dollars an hour is okay for a chill job. It's not good enough pay for that kind of physical labor.

Then I see the schedule. I have no hours at all-not one-for the next week. Oh, hell no! That is definitely strike five. That is inexcusable. I took a job because I wanted to work. I had been unemployed for almost a month. I finally get hired and then they expect me to beg for my hours? Oh, that's just not gonna work.

At this point, I am beyond unmotivated. I don't care about this stupid job. I don't care about their stupid rules. I am so upset that after finally having some hope it's already taken from me. I'm not sitting around all week hoping that they call me to offer my more hours. I'm going to resume my job search. And if they don't like that then they shouldn't have given me so much time to sit around at home.

I wanted to just not even come in on Friday, but I did. I figured I would see how that shift went and then just resume my job search over the weekend. Then comes strike six. This job involves moving back and forth, lifting things, moving things pretty much all day. So I am constantly going back and forth to a cart full of product to find places for it, figure out how many things I have to move or how to redo an entire shelving unit to make space for this product when there really is none. A manager gets on my case that I'm breaking a rule. If you have to take more than five steps away from the cart, then you have to move the cart before you do anything. So let me get this straight. On top of having an incredible workload, I am going to be micromanaged to the point that I have to stop and think every time I try to move product about how many steps I'll have to take, which isn't something I'm always going to know before I go to look at a shelf, or I'm breaking your stupid rules? No. Just...just no. She said something about working smarter, not harder. First of all, I exert myself far more to move a cart full of product that is difficult to maneuver that I do to take more than five steps. Second of all, do you see the amount of work that you gave me? Nothing you guys are doing is about working smart. There is nothing remotely logical or intelligent about the work we were assigned or about the amount of ridiculous rules we were supposed to follow.

I loved shopping in this store, but there were many times I left without buying anything just because I couldn't get to something I wanted. Now I know why. They bog their stores down with so much product that a lot of areas of the store are just really hard to shop in. So aside from all the other things that bother me about this job, I also don't like that fact that I can't take any pride in my work just because of how the company wants to do things. That's just not how it should be.

So, as of right now, I am still technically employed there, but I am resuming my job search. I am not interested in what they are offering, I am not interested in being treated like I'm in elementary school, and I am certainly not interested in being expected to sit by my phone, hoping that the company decides to be gracious enough to call me and offer me another shift or two by the end of the week. Clearly, they don't take this "job" thing very seriously, so why should I? I can just see the managers sitting around when I don't come back, complaining that they can't keep people because everyone's lazy and just doesn't want to work. Maybe offer a decent wage, actually give people work, and don't treat them like they're children. Just a few ideas. Maybe give it a try.

I received an email yesterday inviting me to apply for another job. Pays three dollars more an hour, is a full time position like I'd prefer, and has some decent benefits. I think I'm gonna give it a shot. Because that little part time retail job is a joke.

On the Subject of "They"

Every time someone makes an announcement that they are nonbinary and would like they/them pronouns to be used, a wave of backlash that is mostly made of false accusations takes place. People are entitled to their own opinions. They are not entitled to their own facts.

The claim is that people are trying to change the language. "They is only used as a plural pronoun!" they will exclaim. "You can't use they in reference to one person."

The truth is that "they" has always been a pronoun that can be used as a singular pronoun or a plural pronoun. And this is nothing new. This has been around for a long time.

Let's say you and I are sitting together and I get a phone call. After I'm off the phone, you might ask me "What did they want?" or "What did they say?" Neither one of us would view that as incorrect grammar or a strange way of speaking. It is completely normal to say a sentence like that. It's not out of the ordinary or part of some woke takeover of the English language. It's just using plain English to communicate a question.

Let me pose another scenario. Let's say that you work at a restaurant and a customer comes in and asks to speak to the manager. You might go to the manager and say, "They are waiting to talk to you," while indicating to the person you are referring to. In this scenario, there are, of course, other pronouns that might suit your needs as well, but the point is that if you use "they" your manager is not going to look at you with a bewildered look and say, "Well, where are the rest of them? You said they!"

So for those of you who still want to make an issue of this, let's go to the dictionary, shall we?

They Definition & It is a normal part of our language. And for so many to be trying to educate us on grammar when they are seriously trying to argue that they cannot be used as a singular pronoun is...well, it's a lot of things. Let me just put it this way. If you have to make things up or rewrite history in order for your argument to make sense, then maybe you didn't have much of an argument to begin with.

Coming up this week...

Going forward, I will probably be updating this blog 3-4 times a week. Most of those posts will be related to my YouTube channel, Let's Discuss with Eliza. This week I moved, I'm currently unemployed, and my car needs work I can't afford, so I will probably be posting here more than usual until I find work. And working from home is really not something I wanted. I really have no idea what I'll be doing next.

In the meantime, filming and blogging is a great way to keep myself distracted from my growing pile of problems. So, here's what's coming up.

On Saturday I will be uploading a video about the flag code. I'm not one to tell people how they have to treat the flag or to be a stickler about chiding people for not following a rule or a social expectation. The way I see it, it is entirely up to you how you want to treat the flag and if that is different than how I feel about it then so be it. However, what I am a stickler about is practicing what you preach. And I just felt like I had a few things to say about people who want to criticize some for "disrespecting" the flag when they so clearly and blatantly overlook parts of the U.S. flag code whenever it suits them. If you really believe that everyone should respect the flag, then act like it and know what the actual rules are.

On Sunday I will be uploading a video about QAnon. It's not very in depth. It's basically just me sharing a lot of personal experiences, ranting a little bit, and basically expressing that for those of us who grew up in conservative homes a lot of the rhetoric is nothing new. QAnon has gotten a lot of attention in particular for calling the imprisonment and/or execution of Democrats. That stuff has been going on for a while. A lot of Republicans think that they deserve more rights than the Democrats. There is truly no rhyme or reason, no logic behind this feeling at all, but don't think that it's something new because a group of conspiracy theorists are getting a lot of attention now.

On Monday I will be uploading a video reacting to Classically Abby. I don't do a whole lot of reaction videos on my channel, mainly because of time. Since I will be working from home going forward and mostly making my own schedule that may change at some point. I reacted to a video of hers almost a year ago about modesty. I do not understand how any adult woman can think that it is something positive to suggest that women shouldn't decide for themselves what they wear. It is an absolutely absurd concept. And this Monday I'll be reacting to a Q + A video that she did on the topic.

I have several other little projects that I'm working on, but those have taken a back seat to my job search. Next week's videos will be on mental health and my own experience with my job hunt.

Introduction

Welcome to my blog!

I swore that I wasn't going to start this off with a corny introduction post to who I am and what this blog is gonna be about, but hey, I guess we're actually doing this!

I've been running a YouTube Channel called "Let's Discuss with Eliza" for a little over two years now. While the focus is political and social commentary, I kind of considered it my little escape. The goal was really self expression, not growth or gaining a huge following. Trust me-it definitely shows.

My goal was not to become a huge YouTube channel, but I have to admit that I did expect better results than this. I suck at thumbnails, so I kind of gave up. I don't think I've ever really mastered SEO. I'm more inclined to title my videos based on what I want the title to be as opposed to what might be more favored by the algorithm. The point is, I really don't have much room to complain about my lack of growth when I haven't really been giving it the kind of effort that might actually get me better results.

But regardless of whether I have a huge channel or I'm happy with my creative outlet, I really did fall in love with making content. I enjoyed filming. Editing, not so much, but that's mostly because of how much I trip over my tongue in every single video. I enjoyed coming up with my own ideas and making those videos whenever I wanted to. It became a passion. And I realized that instead of focusing on that one channel, I wanted to devote my time to making more content that I love.

I still want my channel to grow. I'm not abandoning it, but I'm also open minded to the fact that there are so many ways to make and publish content today. And that is one of the main reasons I am starting this blog.

I used to just let myself be swamped with work. Whenever I was behind on content, that was the excuse. "Well, the bills have to get paid." "I can't miss work to pour time into something that doesn't bring in any money." And don't get me wrong. When you're broke and you're struggling, sometimes you really do have to prioritize putting your efforts into whatever is going to get you the money in your bank account that you need. Creating content doesn't just start bringing in money as soon as you start posting. It takes time to build a platform, gain an audience, monetize your content, learn how affiliate marketing works, etc.

At the same time, life is short. Most of my life I have worked 60 hours a week or more at jobs that don't pay well and take so much more than they give. It just doesn't make sense to be exhausting myself for things that don't pay off.

Now I work four days a week at a regular "job". I devote two days to creating content, leaving a little time for gig work if I'm really falling behind on bills, and one day to just relax. Of course, I don't usually relax as much as I probably should on my day off, but I'll save that for another post. Hopefully, I'll be able to make those content creating days most of the week. I just don't really care about devoting my days to a job.

So what am I doing on those content creation days?

Well, my main YouTube channel is the priority, flailing as it may be. I've thought of moving that content to another platform that seemed interesting, but apparently you have to actually be somebody to make content for their platform. So...I guess that's out, then.

Anyway, I upload to that channel on Sundays and Mondays. And of course, I'll publish more when I can. Since my schedule allows me more time for making videos, I don't want to waste it. If I spent the entire day just filming every Sunday, I'd have enough videos saved to be ahead of the game by months at a time, but quality matters too. And in that department, I have to admit that there is a lot of room for improvement. My focus is political and social commentary. It's perfectly fine for videos to be filled with my own personal opinions and point of view. That's kind of the point, but when I hardly ever include any actual facts or sources because I was more focused on getting a video out rather than investing time to do any research for that video, that's a problem.

Clearly, I'm aware of several issues with my channel. And I want to fix those things. So...what else am I doing?

I have two other channels, one for movie reviews (Eliza's Media Hot Takes) and one for planning (Planning with Eliza). Those channels currently have no upload schedule. And for right now that's perfect.

And then there's this blog. One of the reasons that I get so behind on content is because I constantly have new ideas. If time wasn't an issue, I could probably publish 25 videos a week. At least. However, not every single issue I want to talk about needs to be a video. I think blogging is going to fit into my weekly activities quite nicely. In fact, I'm really looking forward to it.
