Yesterday was a big day over here at hi tree. I had an IDEA. Sometimes those can be few and far between and other times they just flow like water.

Let me break it down for you. I had an Idea, then this happened.

I think it's rather fantastic, but I'm a little crazy so just bare with me here.

I've retired the old pine tree design indefinitely and in it's place will be this little guy. He is now available for purchase in my store!

He has been sitting on my work table since I completed him yesterday and every time I leave the room I hear a tiny voice singing, I quickly turn around and catch him singing songs about pinecones. What is up with that?

Also, I made a new notebook design.

Setting up for the North East Los Angeles Art Walk in my dear friend Sonia Romeros studio.

There was a popcorn fight and naturally I decided it would be a good idea to go swimming in the popcorn.

And now for some pictures of my studio/ work space.

Ladybug Girl! Now available in the shop.

Hello earthlings! As I type this I am sitting on a GIANT rock flying through space at approximately 66,600 miles per hour. There also appears to be a giant flaming ball of gas near by, it looks pretty hot. I don't think we should get too close. MIND BLOWN.

Anyhow, It's almost Earth Day! And to celebrate I'm doing a few things. Here they are in no particular order:

Let's go ahead and skim over the fact that it's been ALMOST four months since I last did a blog post. I am assuming that you are happy to see that I am still alive. However, I cannot guarantee that I am actually alive and not in fact a zombie or a ghost. The good news is that either way, somehow I am typing on a keyboard. Hooray.

Much has happened in the last four months. The holidays happened, which is crazy town for me and hi tree. Super long story short, I had record sales and had to temporarily hire two employees. Which made my life just beautiful. Well, I don't know how beautiful it really was but it definitely cut down on the bouts of rocking back and forth in the corner and the sobbing into my coffee. Because, well, I don't know if you know this but I AM a single mom and I do run a household and a business and sometimes it feels as if my head will EXPLODE.

Unicorn Murder.

I just wanted to give you a little heads up. There has been some drama in hi tree land this week. Hazel here is very upset with me because I killed her favorite unicorn friend. The little bastard was chasing all of the humming birds away in the yard and I just couldn't TAKE IT ANYMORE. Personally I think she needs to put HER MAN PANTS ON but she won't speak to me and I am sure she is hurling insults at me behind my back. I wanted to tell you before she did.

BUT because I am nice, let's take a moment of silence to remember the 3 unicorns that lost their lives this week. It will help her on her road to recovery. According to google there are 7 stages of grieving. I think she is working through stage 3, anger and bargaining, so we've got a ways to go.

Enough about that!

OH Hi! How is it going?

Don't answer that. You'll only be talking to yourself, because I can't hear you.

Warning: this is an image heavy post, make sure your ~~ipad~~ etch a sketch is optimized for the awesomeness you are about to experience.

Look what my sewing machine and I have been up to lately. We are such good friends. We've been making a lot of dolls, including the four foot tall one pictured above. I may be 30 years old, but when I see a cute doll I squeal like a 7 year old. It's like I never grew up; which I didn't, but that is another story.

I am having so much fun making dolls. I love the process of perfecting the design. I am still in the early stages of flushing out any design issues, but it's coming along beautifully.

And in other news, EAR HATS ARE BACK! I know, it's SO exciting. You've been waiting all year.

In case you lack the creative ability to figure out what to do with this AWESOME hat, let me give you a few helpful hints:

Hello lovely people of internet land.
If you are reading this, you are AWESOME.

Let me start by saying that I expect all of you to be very impressed with me right now. BECAUSE the first day of fall is September 23rd at EXACTLY 5:05am (which also happens to be less than 2 days before my 30th birthday) and I have already begun to release the Fall 2011 hi tree collection. Isn't that amazing? I mean, Im usually late to the game with this stuff. But this time I am on top of it. I can sense your enthusiasm from here, so I will go ahead and say thank you. I really appreciate it. I would also like to mention that my ass is now fused to my desk chair because unfortunately I have yet to acquire a factory full of 6 year old to make them for me.

Thats enough rambling.

How about some glitter encrusted mushrooms on a giant tree stump? I think YES.

I made owl babies with my sewing machine!

I haven't made these is such a long time. As you can see they have been redesigned.

I like them very much.

I did a small run of these little tree stump zipper pouch keychains and change purses. They are very handy for keeping small things in. I always have 1,000,000 small things floating around my purse. You know, just the usual stuff like viles of glitter and tiny unicorns. No better place to keep those things safe!

snails and an excessive use of hearts

This is a picture of my front porch. Recently we have had some bouts of rain here in Los Angeles and when it rains, all the little snails that live in that plant (the one with the arrow pointing to it) come out to play in the rain. This time I decided I wanted to make them my pets. Why? you may ask. BECAUSE THEY ARE AWESOME.

I admit I never paid any attention to these little creatures before, other than trying to avoid stepping on them on the steps leading up to my house. I really kind of thought they were gross (SLIME! ewww).

But upon further inspection I realized that they are one of the cutest things I have ever seen in my whole life. So here are some pictures of my new snail pets. My daughter Hazel LOVES them.

I would definitely recommend taking in some snails if you have kids, they are SO EASY to care for and very interactive. They get used to being handled very quickly and are actually pretty smart. They eat lettuce, leaves, vegetables and fruit. Mine LOVE the seed pods that fall from the trees on either side of my house, so I always collect some of them to put in their little enclosure.

The two long tentacles on top of their head are their eyes and the two tentacles near the mouth are their feelers . Im sorry but anything with eyes and a nose like that is ridiculously cute.

In the fantasy land in my head I imagine having giant snails that I can ride around on. I might be a little crazy, BUT a little crazy never hurt anyone right? :D

Okay today I'm going to talk about Stuffing.

Over the past few years I've been developing my style and the aesthetic for hi tree and my other stuffed items. I've learned that the quality of the stuffing is crucial to the final result. I need stuffing that stays full and soft through time and abuse. Through tons of experiment of sundry stuffing, I find that Fairfield Premium Polyester Fiber-fil is my favorite. Somehow it manages to add the perfect full and finished effect I am looking for. I LOVE IT.

Earlier this year, Fairfield Processing Corp, the makers of said amazing stuffing found and contacted me through my use of the tag "polyfil" (yay SEO) on Etsy.

This is the largest stuffing manufacturer IN THE WORLD requesting hi tree be featured on the FIRST PAGE of their interactive handmade landscape built for their new website www.fairfieldworld.com AND they ordered 3 custom free standing trees ranging from 3.5 ft. to 4 ft. tall for their Trade show booth display. I just had to take a minute to post the cutest video I have ever seen in my whole life because you NEED to see it. If I were an animal I would probably be a sloth. These little guys are inspiring me to make some slothy things. Sloth backpack perhaps?

The Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica is where these little guys live. They have a pretty amazing website where you can adopt a sloth or volunteer (www.slothrescue.org) I would recommend going and taking a look at the slothbook.

How to make fabric sew in labels {with out a printer!}

Here I go, all giving away my secrets and stuff. This is a pretty awesome secret, I have to say, when I discovered I could do this it CHANGED MY LIFE and saved me millions of dollars. Ok, fine, not millions, but hundreds at LEAST and could easily be thousands. Okay enough about that, you get the point.

This blog post is about how I make fabric sew in labels for my trees, hats, fanny packs, keychains.... EVERYTHING. The BEST thing about making tags using this method is that you can customize each and every tag/label specific to the item you will be putting it on. Say it with me........ yaaayyyy!

This is what you need:

* bias tape, ribbons, trims, fabric pieces.... etc....

* a stamp {with your name, logo or whatever you want on the label}

* oil based stamp pad / pigment stamp pad (nooooo
water-based!)

* scissors

* umm, nope, thats it

OKAY I know you are sitting there with all your materials ready so ill get on with it.

FIRST choose the fabric and/or ribbon you want to print your name or logo onto. It can be ALMOST be anything, ribbon, strips of fabric, bias tape, whathaveyou (although waterproof-ish materials don't work so good). You want the ink to be able to absorb into the fabric a little bit. (twill works GREAT)

My personal favorite is store bought single fold bias tape like this! (I use it for almost everything)

{sidenote: I would recommend NOT cutting the desired length until you have already printed onto the bias tape (or whatever you choose to print on)}

Next, get your stamp.

This is my stamp, it looks REALLY funny, I know. To make my stamp, I used a Clover felting needle case (this is not really the right way to mount the stamps, but im cheap, so it will do) and those fabulous Martha Stewart stamp letters that you pull apart and make your own words with (there probably is a name for them, but I don't pay attention to such things, clearly) you can buy some at Michael's. (In the paper craft section) There are proper blocks for mounting the stamps on that you can also purchase, coincidentally, at Michael's. The moral of the story: your stamp does NOT need to look this ghetto.

Once you have your stamp all sorted out, bust out that fancy stamp pad and start stamping until your heart is content.

For making multiple labels on one strip of ribbon or fabric, I have found that spacing the stamps about 2.5 inches apart from each other leaves plenty of room to cut and sew around the whole label.

Last but certainly NOT least, cut out your tag and sew it into your stuffed unicorn. (SO sweet of you to make me a stuffed unicorn! Please send to 333 Magicalforest lane, LaLaLand, Ca 90042)

Here are some examples of labels I have printed on random bits of ribbon, bias tape and fabric I have found laying around. The options truly are endless, and it is really nice to not have to rely on someone else to make your labels.

i am finally settled in my "new" studio space (@my house) and have been making all kinds of new things lately! bloody unicorns, hand drawn pins, the summer obsession band merch, baby nun-chucks and FREE STANDING TREES! there is also a top secret project underway as well. so many exciting things going on in hi tree land.
the bloody decapitated unicorns have been so popular around town! ive been making so many of them. there are still a few left in my shop...

here is what my shiny new work space looks like. since hi tree has moved back into my house, my house is now lovingly referred to as "the tree house".
