The Sound of Music...The Sing-A-Long! At the Newton-Conover Auditorium on March 16th, 2013.

What

Come to see Julie Andrew's Classic "The Sound of Music" on a theater-sized screen with subtitle for audience participation. Your host will lead you in a vocal warm-up and there is even a competition for those who dress up in a "Sound of Music" fashion!

Tickets are $15 and all proceeds go to scholarships for New Art School students.

This exhibit also allows you to explore wind power and hydroelectricity, plus gives the opportunity to connect circuits that power up fans, lights, and radios.

Have you cleaned your clothes dryer lately?

Clothes dryers account for as many as 15,000 house fires every year. This is mainly due to the build up of lint in the machine that catches fire. Even lightly clogged up dryers do not function as well, either, often requiring 2 or more cycles in order to completely dry your clothes.

Here is a great video how-to on how to quickly and easily clean out your dryer, keep it safe from a fire hazard and keep it running in top condition.

The Hickory Foundation YMCA is now offering swimming lesson for all ages that will teach water safety skills and developing swimming skills. Ages: 6 months and up. Fee: $40 for a member; $80 for a non-member.

Registration forms are due December 30th, 2012 (Registration forms are available on the website). Classes will be from January 5th to February 23rd, 2012 - no class on February 9th.

YMCA Adult Basketball Team

What

The Adult Basketball League is looking for men and women who are at least 18 years old. The registration fee is $350 per team, but individual registration is available, as well. This fee includes t-shirts, certified referees, an 8-game regular season, and a single elimination tournament.

When

Players must be registered by January 6th, 2013. Games are scheduled to start on January 20th, and they will be played on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Where

Games will be played at the Shuford YMCA (Conover, NC) and at the Hickory Foundation YMCA (Hickory, NC).

The 2012 Christmas in Bethlehem Drive Thru Event
Bethlehem, NC

This is a live-action Christmas production event and features over 30 live scenes and over 100 characters in a reenactment of the town of Bethlehem at the time of Jesus' birth.

You can drive through the streets of "old Bethlehem" while listening to the provided CD of the story behind the scenes. Or if you'd like to really have an experience, you can choose to dress up in some period clothing (provided) and walk through the streets and interact with the characters.

Admission is FREE (donations welcome), as well as refreshments and costumes
So come out and enjoy a truly unique Christmas experience!

A free event that is open to the public that offers the chance to buy locally made pottery and help out the Humane Society (10% of the proceeds will go to the Catawba Human Society). Appetizers, drinks, and wine will be served. Music will be provided by Pondering Wade. Also, gift certificates for pottery or classes will be for sale. Cash, checks, credit and debit cards will be accepted.

This is a drop-by event: it is open from 4 to 8 pm on Saturday, December 1st.

5K Race For Your Life Zombie Run - November 3rd, 2012

The “race for your life” 5K Zombie Run is unlike any other 5K run currently in the area. Along with having to get through a number of obstacles along the way, the runners are also trying to avoid the horde of zombies that are in pursuit of them. Each runner will be wearing a belt with several flags attached to it. The zombies are trying to pull the flags from the runners and the runners are desperately trying to avoid the zombies. This is going to a fantastic event, rain or shine!

Saturday November 3rd, 2012. The race begins at 3:30 pm, but arrive about thirty minutes early to register.

Family Builders of Catawba Valley are holding a Walk-a-Thon to raise awareness of the need for adoptive parents. November is Adoption Awareness Month! Just gather a team of friends, family, or simply yourself and walk. No fund raising for the walk is needed. Doughnuts, coffee and hot chocolate will be served to walkers. The team with the most walkers will win a prize. Participants who make a donation of at least $10 will receive a free shirt.
