Life on the farm is busy. Here’s a snippet of what is going on…

The concrete beds have been a hit.

We have had a bumper crop of lettuce, this is one of 6 beds.

The broccoli and cauliflower are coming along slowly

The peas have loved the cool weather and are coming on strong.

The walking onions are walking,

and the chives are blooming.

The potato patch is doing well

and so are the tomatoes in the greenhouse,

…although we have had a group of pests show up (look close in the bottom right)

…which have quickly become dinner for these troops.

Raise your hand if you know what these guys are and what their favorite snack  is.

This garden hasn’t ever been treated with any commercial spray, organic or otherwise, and this year I have really noticed an increase in beneficial bugs.  It’s a testament to good compost and healthy soil.

Moving on we have green beans sprouted,

…and summer squash coming along.

And last but not least, I do believe the honey bees have decided that they like their new home and are planning to stay.

Thank you bees, I am super happy that you’ve joined our farm!

So there’s a tour of part of what we are growing right now, I’ll try to get pictures of the rest later.

NEW IN 2011!

This year we will be changes from our standard CSA format to a Community Farmstead where you can own a share of the farm. Please be patient while we switch over the website, It will be complete by April 10th, 2011.

I love having a 2 year old with nimble fingers that likes to play by himself. Someday he will be a good engineer.. or basket weaver.

I love having a 2 yr old that is already learning how to pack lots of things into a small package. Someday he will be a good traveler.. or fortune cookie filler.

I love having a 2 yr old that leaves clues lying around for me to find. Someday he will be a good mystery writer.. or a really bad burglar.  Let’s hope for the first.

It was a great idea to put freezers back there when it just seemed like a jaunt across the back yard. The snow is making me reconsider this.

And next year we will have both eggs and meat from our flock of Muscovies.

I get asked all the time about what doctor we go to and often the askee is disappointed when I say we don’t really go to the doctor.  Our whole family has probably only been to the doctor a half dozen times in the last 5 years and most of those times were for physicals.  I believe the reason we can get away with this is because none of us battle any reoccurring illness or health issue.  I could go on for awhile about the ‘why’s’ behind this but I’ll save that for another post.  The one thing we do believe in for our family is going to an excellent chiropractor.  We are blessed to have a wonderful chiropractor that is a friend, a client, and a mentor.  His name is Dr. Drumright.  If anyone in the Kansas City area is looking for a fantastic chiropractor I recommend Dr D. And whoever registers in that place (the number we’re thinking of) will get one complimentary month of a personalized share of pasture-raised meats (beef, lamb, turkey, Heritage pigs and chickens) and eggs, 100% grass-fed dairy (farmstead cheeses and more fresh dairy products) and Heirloom produce, as well as traditionally-prepared a la carte items.

FeeBee tricked us this time around. Although her due date was two days ago, when I checked her Thursday night I was certain she would be at least another week. Her ligaments were not loose and her bag was a long way off from being full.

Today Damon found her with a beautiful little blue eyed heifer that he has named Sasha.

It is very rare for a cow to have blue eyes, and Sasha’s will probably change to the standard dark brown in time, but once before we had a blue eyed Normande calf that kept his blue eyes.

For now we will just admire her pretty baby blues.
