Acabe de leer el libro "Huesos del Maestro." I just finished reading "Bones of the Master." El monje buddista de este libro empezo cada dia caminando en meditacion. The Buddisht monk of this book began every day walking in meditation. Llamo ese meditacion "Caminando con el Buddha." He called this meditation "Walking with Buddha." Yo mismo empiezo mis dias caminando en Rancho La Escondida. I too start every day walking in Rancho La Escondida. Siento mejor porque estoy caminando con el Buddha. I feel better knowing that I start every day walking with Buddha.

Este es un reporte de mi amiga Besti Starr.

On May 15th, we celebrated San Isidro (one of many patron saints) and Campesino Day by going out to a friend's property about an hour east of San Cristobal to watch a bull riding event. It turns out we were the FIRST non-peasants/non-indigenous persons to EVER watch this little local rodeo. Then we had lunch at Robin's Rancho where he raises horses, Great Danes and harvests wild Salvia devinorum which he sells at GOOD PROFIT in San Cris. On the return, we stopped off at the local Zapatista Commandante's home and visited with her LARGE FAMILY, EATING TINY BUT DELICIOUS PEACHES OFF THEIR TREE.

Some of us plan to return to Robin's Rancho "La Escondida" to do some simple ceremony and maybe horse-back riding for the Summer solstice, coming up on June 21st, although i won't be able to get there until the 22nd because the Bookstore is open both Fridays and Saturdays, but is closed Sunday. So we will have a little slumber party in Robin's cottage with a big fire on Saturday night and we'll enjoy Sunday as we see fit, depending on weather, as the rainy season is now upon us.... should be fun! Also a quick astrological note: mercury will be retrograde again from June 26th until July 17th... machines tend to break down and communications can be muddled.... but it's a good time to rethink plans and to review the consequences of past actions... it's also generally good for thinking, meditating and journal writing.

La Primavera es la temporada de crias en Rancho La Escondida Ecopark. Every Spring we have a Baby Boom at Rancho La Escondida Ecopark. Anoche La Six, mi perra Gran Danes, tuvo 8 cachorros. Last night La Six, my Great Dane bitch, had 8 puppies. Tambien esta primavera tuvimos portros, pollitos, y conejitos. Also this Spring we had colts, chicks, and bunnies. Yesterday Huracan Barbara, a Pacific hurricane, made landfall in Chiapas. Babara ended 6 months of drought, turning the countryside from brown to green. In the Highlands of Chiaps, we depend on hurricanes to fill our lakes and wells with water. The hurricane inspired us to begin planting corn. We use heritage mayan corn seeds. These corn seeds include the following colors, yellow, black, red, amber, orange and pink. In 3 months we will have a great harvest thanks to Huracan Barbara.

Rancho la Escondida is a most bountiful mistress. First, she provided me with shelter. Next, she restored my health. Now, she is increasing my wealth. Ranch products have become my major source of income. Among these riches are corn, beans, coffee, salvia divinorum, chickens, eggs, Great Dane puppies, and Arabian colts. Yesterday we collected over 400 pounds of jadite stones. Yes, jade is another treasure of La Escondida.

Mary, the Queen of Heaven and the Queen of Mexico, appeared to Juan Diego, the First Native American Saint, on December 12, 1531. For the last 480 years Mary has ruled the heart and soul of Mexico. Mexico, the most Catholic country on the planet, celebrates Mary's appearance from November 30 to December 12 every year. Antorcha Guadalupana is a pilgrimage made by thousands of Mexicans to honor Mary. It's a relay race with pilgrims carrying lighted torches day and night barefoot. An American friend told me that he couldn't enjoy the Antorcha because nobody was having any fun. I believe there are some Americans blind to the joy Mexicans experience in showing devotion.

Pocket Frisbees seem like the perfect toy. Crocheted by native women and sold on the internet for only $20 US. The inventors of Pocket Frisbees, Christian and Rachel Larsen recently paid a visit to Rancho La Escondida and promised the native women of Ejido Chijilte jobs crocheting Pocket Frisbees. Yesterday a group of native women arrived at my ranch to ask about the promised jobs. I had to tell them regretfully that Rachel Larsen told me that Pocket Frisbees would not hire them because the Mexico where we live is to raw or in Spanish "crudo." I investigated Pocket Frisbees and found that their "Fair Market" practices allows them to pay pennies for frisbees that they then sell for $20. I thank god that I live in a Mexico too raw for Christian and Rachel Larsen.

Mexio is the only 21st Century nation with its roots firmly embedded in the 19th Century International Anarchists Movement. The Revolution of 1910 was fomented and founded by leaders of the aforesaid movement, including Bakunin, Emma Goldman and Flores Magon. Scratch any Mexican and you find an anarchist. The everyday result of anarchism in Mexico is that corruption is rampant and nothing works. Mexicans voice their frustration in the form of Bloqueos or road blocks. On any given day in Mexico City there are 40 road blocks of people demanding their rights. Here in Chiapas, the favorite place for Bloqueos is the Pan American Highway, the only through road in the State. This week the City Police have stopped all traffic on the PanAmerican to demand payment for their work. The Presidente or Mayor and Municipal Commissioner has absconded with all funds to build a palace in Acapulco. This happens every time a new party wins power in national elections. The following fotos are what I encountered today when I tried to leave Rancho La Escondida. Needless to say I went home to write this essay.

Children of the Corn

Seven thousands years ago, the ancient Mayans successfully completed man's greatest feat of genetic engineering, corn. Corn does not grow naturally, it can only propogate with the help of man. This year, my modern Mayan workers told me I should plant corn. They found the perfect spot in my sumidero, or sink hole, where the warm microclimate and protection from the wind are ideal. I agreed with my men but stipulated that we would not plant the predominate Monsanto white corn. I told them to look for black corn seeds. They found the black corn and planted a couple of acres. They used the traditional method of three corn seeds to a hole along with a black bean seed. They also planted white squash between the corn rows. The following fotos are the miracle wrought by these Children of the Corn.
