Country's third largest software services firm Wipro said it was planning to strengthen its presence in the Nordic region by adding 500 people over the next three years.
According to sources, Wipro has about 500 people as part of its Nordic operations.
The company has also appointed Carl-Henrik Hallstrom as the regional head for Nordic region, Wipro said in a statement.
He will be based in Stockholm, Sweden and report to Rajat Mathur, chief sales and operations officer (growth markets) at Wipro.

San Francisco (CNN) -- Google unveiled some upgrades to its mapping software on Wednesday ahead of Apple's expected announcement that it will ditch Google Maps on iPhones and iPads in favor of its own technology.

At a news conference at its San Francisco office, Google previewed a handful of upcoming features, including the ability to use Google maps without an Internet connection. Android users will be able to take maps offline from more than 100 countries and access them when they're out of Wi-Fi range or on the subway, for example.

"No longer will you need paper maps," said Rita Chen, a product manager for Google.

The offline mode is expected to become available for Android devices within a few weeks. There was no word on whether that feature will extend to other devices, such as the iPhone. Apple, however, is expected to announce at its developers conference next week that it's dropping Google's mapping app for its own version.

Other new features will include more detailed 3-D mapping of urban areas. Google said it will begin to add 3-D images of buildings to its Google Earth app for mobile devices. This will require chartered airplanes equipped with Google cameras flying over cities to capture the imagery.

"We're trying to create the illusion that you are flying over the city, almost as if you were in your own personal helicopter," said Peter Birch, another product manager.

Google also showed off a new backpack unit, nicknamed Trekker, that will allow for more images of remote, off-road places best reached on foot. The backpacks are rigged with cameras that technicians can use to snap Street View images of hiking trails and other wilderness locations, such as national parks.

LiFi (LightFidelity) is a fast and cheap optical version of WiFi, the technology of which is based on Visible Light Communication (VLC). VLC is a data communication medium, which uses visible light between 400 THz (780 nm) and 800 THz (375 nm) as optical carrier for data transmission and illumination. It uses fast pulses of light to transmit information wirelessly. The main components of this communication system are 1) a highbrightness white LED,

which acts as a communication source and 2) a silicon photodiode which shows good response to visible wavelength region serving as the receiving element. LED can be switched on and off to generate digital strings of 1s and 0s. Data can be encoded in the light to generate a new data stream by varying the flickering rate of the LED. To be more clear, by modulating the LED light with the data signal, the LED illumination can be used as a communication source. As the flickering rate is so fast, the LED output appears constant to the human eye. A data rate of greater than 100 Mbps is possible by using highspeed LEDs with appropriate multiplexing techniques. VLC data rate can be increased by parallel data transmission using LED arrays where each LED transmits a different data stream.

There are reasons to prefer LED as the light source in VLC while a lot of other illumination devices like fluorescent lamp, incandescent bulb etc. are available.

The Printing Process
The basic process of 3D printing starts with the creation of the 3D object using an appropriate 3D modeling softwareeither traditional CAD/CAM packages such as Pro/E, Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, or newgeneration mesh modeling software such as Blender, 3D Studio, Google Sketchup or TinkerCAD. In addition, some of the printers have their own bundled software or preferred software (for example, the RepRap community prefers the Open Source software, “Art of Illusion”). Due to the way 3D models are handled internally, CAD software is usually preferred over meshmodelling software, although this distinction is now blurring.

These software makes it possible to create and finetune 3D surfaces and objects using a variety of techniques, and ‘paint’ the objects with color and texture as required. While some of these software can do much more (for example, most mesh modelling software can also set up lights & cameras, and render animated scenes), for 3D printing, the creation of the mesh is usually sufficient. As a final step in the design phase, the model may need to be converted into the ‘native’ file format of the printer used.

Trillions of new net addresses now possible

The new system is necessary to prevent the internet running out of available addresses for new devices.

Experts said users should not notice any difference in their web use, and new devices should be using the new system as standard.

Companies such as Google, Facebook and major internet service providers have enabled the new system in order to encourage the widespread adoption of the standard.

The actions come as part of World IPv6 Launch Day, a special event organised by the Internet Society.

IPv6 will eventually replace IPv4, which was conceived during the early days of the internet. It only allows just over four billion unique IP addresses - the sequences of numbers used to identify a device.

Each internet-enabled device - such as a computer, tablet or smartphone - needs its own IP address in order to connect to the internet.

However, due to the shortage of IP addresses, many devices - such as multiple computers in the one home - have to share addresses.

Networking giant Cisco predicts that by 2016, 18.9 billion internet-enabled devices will be online. Switching to IPv6 means trillions of possible addresses can now be made.

Vint Cerf, early pioneer of the internet and current "chief internet evangelist" for Google, explained in a blog post: "The new, larger IPv6 expands the limit to 2^128 addresses—more than 340 trillion, trillion, trillion! Enough for essentially unlimited growth for the foreseeable future."

A Bangladeshi hacker group have attacked 20,000 Indian websites, including that of the Border Security Force (BSF), after the alleged killing of Bangladeshis by Indian border guards.

The group calling itself 'Bangladesh Black HAT Hackers' wrote on its Facebook fan page: 'India hacked our 400 sites in total, we hacked 20,000 sites in total since the war started.'

According to Xinhua, the group claimed the BSF website was damaged after being hacked.

Last week, a group of hackers named 'Indian Cyber Army' attacked the websites of five ministries in Bangladesh and that of a trade organisation.

The Bangladeshi hackers said their action was in response to the alleged killings by BSF along the more than 4,000-km-long Indo-Bangladesh border.

'We don't have any personal issues with Indians. But the brutality of BSF as well as Indian government has forced us to do this,' the hackers wrote on Facebook

Double buffering improves performance because the graphics

Researchers transmit record 186 GB data per second

Researchers have successfully transmitted 186 gigabits of data per second (GBps), accomplishing a new world record and helping user in the next generation of high-speed network technology.

The rate is equivalent to moving two million gigabytes per day, fast enough to transfer nearly 100,000 full Blu-ray discs - each with a complete movie and all the extras - in a day.

The international team of scientists at the SuperComputing 2011 (SC11), Seattle, accomplished the feat mid-November, transferring data in opposite directions at a combined rate of 186 GBps in a wide-area network circuit, according to a California Institute of Technology (Caltech) statement.

The team of high-energy physicists, computer scientists and network engineers was led by Caltech, the University of Victoria, University of Michigan, European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Florida International University and other partners.

According to the researchers, the achievement will help establish new ways to transport the increasingly large quantities of data that traverse continents and oceans via global networks of optical fibers.

These new methods are needed for the next generation of network technology - which allows transfer rates of 40 and 100 GBps - that will be built in the next couple of years.

'Our group and its partners are showing how massive amounts of data will be handled and transported in the future,' says Harvey Newman, professor of physics and head of the high-energy physics team.

'Having these tools in our hands allows us to engage in realisable visions others do not have. We can see a clear path to a future others cannot yet imagine with any confidence,' he adds.

When you think of other programming languages’ names, such as BASIC, FORTRAN, COBOL, C, C++, and PASCAL, the name Java doesn’t really fit in. The name itself is interesting enough to garner curiosity. So just how did Java get its name? The original name for Java was intended to be “OAK”, but they couldn’t use that name because it was already taken (by Oak Technologies). Other names floating around were “Silk” and “DNA”. Apparently, the name “Java” was ultimately picked because it gave the Web a “jolt” and Sun wanted to avoid
names that sounded nerdy. Java certainly does its part in making the Internet the interactive, dynamic, not to mention fun, technology that it is.

IIT PLACEMENT,70 Lakh OFFER FROM FACEBOOK

Social networking giant Facebook has offered about Rs 70 lakh per annum package to an IIT student here in the ongoing campus placements.

"M Tech (computer science and engineering) student Siddharth Agrawal has been offered the package (near about Rs 70 lakh)," IIT-K registrar Sanjeev Kashelkar said.

He said Facebook has offered high packages to other students as well but the one offered to Agrawal is the highest so far. The registrar, however, did not disclose the exact amount.

Last week, Facebook had offered a similar package to a IIT-Kharagpur student.

The placement process in the IIT here started on December 2 with over 950 graduates and post-graduates vying for jobs in high-profile companies like Microsoft, GE, Infosys and TCS.

On the first day itself, over 100 students were placed, with 15 students being picked up by Microsoft. Over 400 students have been placed so far since the placement process began, the registrar said. Around 200 companies are expected to visit the institute to hire aspirants in the coming days.
