We are almost at the end of the first (hopefully of many) Granny tastic crochet course, run by Yours Truely at The Brighton Sewing Centre. Last week the lovely Ich bin ein baum came along and took these pictures to show y'all how we roll on a tuesday night.

This weekend I packet up the trolley and wheeled my wares along to The brighton Unitarian church to take part in the 2nd Assembly Rooms Art Market. Organised by Brighton based design company Ridley and Dowse, this event was jam packed with some seriously splendid designers, makers, illustrators and crafters. (Not a single felted item in sight-phew!)

Sandwiched between a devine cake stall and stunning embroidered brooches by Betty you can probably guess I had a brilliant time! Note to self: extra jumper and wooly socks are essential! Visitors including Ridder , Meg and Ich bin ein baum kept the tea flowing and me company all weekend. Thanks ladies!

Hair-pin-crochet T-shirt with circles and beading!

You will need:

Metal knitting stitch holder

Crochet hook

Jersey T-shirt

Several different colour yarns

List of abbreviations:

Sts- stitch

Ch- chain stitch

Sc- single crochet

Sk- slip knot

To start, hold the stitch holder pin with the open end downwards and the 'u' bend at the top. This allows for the crochet loops to slide off when the space gets filled up. For the small crochet circles you must bend the pin to 2.5cm, and the large 4cm

NB *you will need to make 7 large circles and 4 small. Plus any extras you wish to add to the design.

1) Make a long slip knot, keep length attached to the ball of yarn a whilst you work the crochet.

2) Put this over the left prong of your pin keeping the knot central. Adjust the size of the knot, keeping it central at all times (as in photo #)

3) Wrap the yarn from the front left position to the back of the pin round the right hand prong. (Anti-clockwise) The yarn is now at the back of the fork and hold the yarn in your left hand. Right hand holds crochet hook.

4) With first slip knot still on crochet hook, put hook up through the centre of the loop on the left of the pin, catch the yarn and draw it back through the loop making a chain stitch. Keep central and pull tight.

5) Take your hook out of the stitch, take to the back of the pin and put back into loop (from back to front) Now turn the pin from right to left (clockwise) and the yarn will loop around the fork, you are now ready to make the next sts.

6) Insert the hook between upwards between the two loops on the left pin, catch yarn and pull it through keeping the yarn on the hook (2 loops on hook) now wrap the yarn with left hand around the hook again (3 loops on hook). Pull the last/3rd loop through the first 2 stitches making a single crochet.

7) Continue turning the work clockwise, making a chain stitch followed by a single crochet at the centre of your stitch holder pin.

8) To finish the length, simply cut the yarn and pull this cut end through the chain stitch as you would with normal crochet and pull tight. For small circle do approx 60 turns and large circle approx 80. You need only count sts on one side of your pin.

9) To form the circle catch all loops on one side of length onto your crochet hook. Make a slip knot at the end of a short length of yarn (same colour as the crochet preferably) hook into this loop and draw it through these loose crochet stitches.

10) Taking both ends of this new yarn, draw together loops with a tight knot, and secure with another.

11) Thread long ends of crochet through a needle and sew into opposite end of crochet stitch to secure further and neaten.

12) Lay all circles out on t-shirt in desired colour order and secure by stitching all outer loops, one at a time, in a blanket stitch method. Repeat with all circles.

13) With a beading needle, sew beads in place, with a simple over-under motion in a curve around attached crochet detail where desired (we beaded every other circle).

14) Using a mixture of cross stitch and 15) Running stitches, embroider in simple lines under the beading and around the circles. Mix the colours as you wish...

Here's my finished T-shirt. I have cut away areas of jersey behind the larger circles, taking great care not to snip the crochet!

A few weeks ago i had a lovely email from Felicity Lynch requesting some collars for an very interesting sounding shoot she had planned with music photographer James Looker for super cool kids magazine Babiekins. Having seen some of her previous projects on her amazing blog EOH, i jumped straight in and sent her my favorite pieces. Et voila!

Many thanks to Felicity, James and all her team. I really think this is the most perfect shoot!

I have had the same glaringly white bedroom for over 3 years now. Stumbling across these most perfect images from the Farrow & Ball website has utterly inspired me! The images are styled by the photographer David Cleveland whose website is full to the brim with exciting colourful images! I must decorate!

Finally finished my quilted waist coat. I tweeted a few images as i was making it but forgot to photo the process of tracing, cutting, quilting, binding and the many, many knots i had to tie to secure the quilty goodness. Lots. I am very pleased with this first attempt! And at just how gross a colour combo i chose. Next up is a lightweight wool circular skirt with shaped waistband! Jumper is coming along...slowly!

I defy anyone to go into The Brighton Sewing Centre on North rd and not find inspiration. Every nook and cranny is filled to the brim with glorious colour, glimmering threads and sparkling buttons. The overhaul this little, once dingy and out dated shop has seen in the last 18 months is immense! And it is almost unrecognisable as the place i took my 7 gauge knitting machine to be fixed 4 years ago. Sewing heaven. The lovely staff have encyclopedic knowledge of everything from sewing machines and quilting to free motion machine embroidery and pattern cutting... and teach an array of super exciting classes to run alongside all these activities! Well what are you waiting for?! As i mentioned in an earlier post, 2011 at M.A.P is all about Make.Do.Mend. Well look no further...My crafty little fingers are a tappin' and my brain instantly dizzy with an array of project ideas that there are just not enough hours in a day to get stuck into.

Pop in and have a peek... and see if you can leave empty handed. The pompoms are awesome!

swap fast, fix up, look sharp

Its that time of year when all our clothes seem dull, worn out, boring. You can't stand a single thing you own! its to early to pull out your favourite summer frock, but those tights are wearing thin...

I got together with a few fancy creative female pals to test run a 'swap and fix' night at my studio. Picnic dinner, Check! Piles of over worn outfits, Check! A few dresses that are too long and have never been worn but the print is lovely, Check! (some unflattering photos, Check!)

We swapped a few, chopped a few, kick dropped a few.

This red number was a stunning print but looked hideous on everyone and was deemed unwearable!

A highly successful evening overall... swapping saves money and the environment! And refreshing that Lovely long Laura Ashley skirt can be as easy as chopping a few inches off the hem. We'll be tweeking the idea a bit in the next few days and hope to be working on a spectacular She's called Claire event very soon! Until then keep up to date with Miss McCullough and the musically marvelous Donna Fullman, And remember to......

make, do and mend.

Until recently i worked the whole weekend...all the live long day! Just imagine. No Saturday mooching or Sunday market and afternoon roasts. Times are a changing as they often say, and on this first Saturday of hopefully many to come i trotted to the train station with my best friend O.H and hopped on a train to take in the wonders of Worthing! Broadwater to be precise. Needless to say we missed the train and had to take a detour. But look who whisked us away when we eventually alighted.... O.H's Grandparents Fred and Dorean! We dined at their local on Gastro delights, mulled over recent family gossip and shared knitting stories, for at least 90 minutes.

Carb coma over, we hit the streets with a detailed plan of where to find all the best chazzas this side of Worthing Station. Help The Aged, Sue Ryder, Guild Care, St Barnabas, Heart Foundation, and this little gem Mr Zooks! I should probably have kept this one to myself.

I spent a grand total of £12 but behold the treasures i found!

Thanks to Fred and Dorean for a super lovely day, and filling me with tea and cake.

Embroidered Shopper Workshop - Miss Amy Phipps

Using "traditional" hand embroidery stitches with a contemporary vintage twist, this class will introduce you to a vast array of foundation stitches to create patterns and motifs on a fun and functional fabric shopper bag. You'll learn a variety of effects, how to work on an embroidery hoop and mix yarns and colours to give your projects a new crafty dimension, over three 2 hour classes.

Motifs can be designed free hand, translating your own original ideas, or working with a selection of vintage transfers provided. The possibilities are endless, make a real statement with this project!

A bit of this, and a little of that (mostly 80's and 50's to be more precise). A smattering of things overly synthetic, meets a stash of inherited hand made to measure overcoats, thats how my Saturday night chez Nottingham went. Hours of wading and sorting led me to think i should document the craziness that is my old bedroom at my Parents house. So i took some blurry photos to show just some of what i excavated from a single wardrobe in a topsy turvy teenage bedroom. There is more. Always more.

I hand made most of my christmas gifts xmax 2010! I embroidered doileys to adorn bags and vintage frames for my nearest and dearest. It was a most enjoyable task! And great practice for up and coming embroidery workshops this january. This budgie, for my sister and is probably my bestest as i used 12 different types of stitch!

My aim during 2011 is to make/salvedge/upcycle as much as possible! This includes all gifts and all non essential clothing! essential = tights,shoes and pants! You get the idea. I have already started knitting a jumper for next winter....
