<p>High blood pressure is a common problem in the United States. There are 72 million people diagnosed with this issue. Several factors are involved when it comes to suffering from high blood pressure. Some causes of high blood pressure include:</p>
<h2>Growing older tends to bring higher blood pressure.  </h2>
<p>Isolated systolic hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that is normally found in older adults. This occurs when the systolic pressure is elevated even though the diastolic reading might be normal. Normally the risk begins when men get to the age of 45 and women hit the age of 55. But there are enough ways to normalize your blood pressure that this does not have to be the unavoidable result.</p>
<h2>Anyone at anytime can be diagnosed with high blood pressure. </h2>
<p>African Americans are the top group of people who have the highest blood pressure numbers. They have a tendency to receive a diagnosis of hypertension at a younger age. Blood pressure is frequently even harder to manage at acceptable levels.  They may not know they have the condition either. This is just one more reason why so many people suffer from high blood pressure it is wise to get the correct minerals and vitamins this way your blood pressure will not rise.</p>
<p>You can take many steps to lower the risks of high blood pressure and keep it lower than it would otherwise be, although there are other risk factors, including family history, that you cannot control. This life-threatening disease is best prevented by sticking to a healthy living plan and controlling your blood pressure.</p>

<p><P><B>Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE)</B> inhibitors prevent the manufacture of a hormone in the body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II makes blood vessels narrower. When the hormone production is blocked, the arteries remain wider and allow blood to flow through with less pressure on the vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure.</P></p>
<p><H3>Brand Names for Ace Inhibitors</H3></p>
<p><P>Benazepril, Enalapril and Lisinopril are three ACE inhibitors commonly used in the treatment of high blood pressure. They are seldom the first course of action but are used to treat the more severe cases of hypertension. Ideally, maintaining a proper weight and eating right are the best ways to control blood pressure. After that a diuretic type of medication may be prescribed, which works based on the idea of flushing the arteries so pressure is reduced.</P> </p>
<p><P>The brand names under which the common ACE inhibitors used to treat high blood pressure are sold are Lotensin (benazepril), Vasotec (enalapril) and Prinivil and Zestril (lisinopril). All of these work to increase blood flow by keeping the arteries open and wide.</P></p>

<p>Well, high blood pressure, also known as &#8220;hypertension&#8221;, the &#8220;silent disease&#8221; or the &#8220;silent killer&#8221; is the measure of pressure that the blood exerts against the wall of your arteries as your heart pumps.</p>
<p>There are people who have dangerously high blood pressure and yet they don&#8217;t know it because there are no symptoms for weeks, months, or even years.</p>
<p>But high blood pressure is a dangerous condition and complications can be very serious. You see, as the heart pumps the blood through the walls of arteries that have lost their elasticity, the heart has to work much harder to push the blood through them.</p>

<p><P>You may know that high blood pressure can cause the heart to become enlarged through years of overwork. But did you know that the disease called hypertension – the technical name for high blood pressure – can also do some serious damage to the arteries?</P></p>
<p><H3>Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH)</H3></p>
<p><P>One type of hypertension is called <B>Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH)</B> because it is a condition where the pressure on the pulmonary artery is too great. This becomes an area of concern when pressure is above 25 mmHg. Normal pressure on the pulmonary artery is 14 mmHg. In PAH the inside of the arteries becomes narrower because the muscles along the wall tighten up. The arteries can also become thick from the increased muscle mass in the arteries due to their “workout.” When this happens the thicker walls create a narrower passage way for the blood flow and blood pressure increases.</P></p>
<p><P>The pulmonary arteries can also form scar tissue. This narrows the artery even more. Blood clots can cause further blockage and make blood flow difficult. All of the factors that narrow the arteries can also cause them to harden.</P> </p>
<p><P>As time goes on without treating PAH, the right side of the heart is forced to work harder. Eventually it becomes so weak that it completely fails. The number one cause of death for people with PAH is heart failure. PAH is either inherited or comes about as the result of other conditions such as chronic lung disease, blood clots in the lungs or heart disease which can be caused by other types of conditions such as hypertension or high cholesterol.</P></p>
<p><H3>Atherosclerosis</H3></p>
<p><P><B>Atherosclerosis</B> is another condition of the arteries brought about by high blood pressure among other diseases and conditions. The risk of developing this hardening and narrowing of the arteries is increased with age. If you have a close relative with the condition you are also at greater risk.</P></p>
<p><P>Basically, atherosclerosis starts because of a buildup of plaque in the arteries by damage to the artery’s lining. That is what recent research is telling us about sodium&#8217;s role in managing blood pressure. Hypertension, it turns out, is not caused by too much salt. Neither is it lowered by simply cutting salt out of your diet. So how is it that table salt (sodium) is still getting such a bad rap and being linked to high blood pressure? The real culprit it turns out is not salt, but how your body manages sodium and its proportion to the amount of potassium, calcium and magnesium in your body.</p>
<p>Scientists have discovered that deficiencies in potassium, calcium and magnesium have a much greater impact on blood pressure than the mineral salt. These other minerals are so important in controlling blood pressure that when they are out of balance with each other, they can make salt more of a threat to healthy blood pressure.</p>
<p>The fact is that only about 10 percent of the population is considered &#8220;salt sensitive.&#8221; It is this relatively small group that has to watch their salt intake for a variety of reasons, including its impact on blood pressure.</p>

<p>Dr Atkins was able to bring down hypertension in his patients by cutting back on carbohydrates and adding nutritional supplements.</p>
<p>Since most people drink too little water and ingest too much salt, getting these two in balance is often all that is required. About 60% of hypertensives are thought to be responsive to reduced salt intake.</p>
<p><strong>Fatty Acids</strong></p>
<p>The omega 3 fatty acids taken as fish oils can lower blood pressure. They improve pliability and flexibility of blood vessels, lower inflammation and relax blood vessels.</p>
<p><strong>Garlic</strong></p>
<p>Consuming garlic on a regular basis lowers the risk of heart disease. A number of studies show that it can lower blood pressure.</p>
<p><strong>CoQ10</strong></p>
<p>Coenzyme Q10 enhances the immune system and protects against free radicals. It is particularly valuable in treating heart conditions. In one study 26 patients with essential arterial hypertension were treated with oral CoQ10, 50mg twice daily for 10 weeks. At the end of the treatment, systolic blood pressure decreased from 164.5 to 146.7 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure decreased from 98.1 to 86.1 mmHg on average.</p>
<p><strong>Vitamin C</strong></p>
<p>Since essential hypertension is associated with an abnormal antioxidant status and reduced levels of nitric oxide, in both of which vitamin C has important roles, one would expect this vitamin to be able to reduce high blood pressure and it does.</p>
<p>In one study taking 500mg a day caused a significant drop in elevated blood pressure for both men and women.</p>
<p><strong>Other Important Nutrients</strong></p>
<p>The non essential amino acid l-arginine relaxes the blood vessels once it is converted to nitric oxide. Its blood pressure lowering effect is seen taking between two and nine grams per day.</p>
<p>Some minerals are particularly important in the cardiovascular system. These include calcium, magnesium and potassium. Taurine has a diuretic effect and can relax blood vessels.</p>
