South Park, Colorado Natures Paradise Book

There’s a beautiful park in South Park, Colorado that once had the Creole name ”Bayou Salade” (Salt Marshes), and it is nature’s paradise. There, amid wide plains and crystal streams, one can breathe the purest air anywhere.

South Park, Colorado Natures Paradise book takes you on a journey into the high country to view late spring’s awakening nature, summer’s wildflower season, fall’s magnificent golden foliage and winter’s Rocky Mountain solitude.

South Park, Colorado, displays its splendor throughout the seasons as it has for centuries. Located in the center of Colorado, South Park is more than 1,000 square miles of prairies, grassy plains and gentle hills around the headwaters of the South Platte River. It is surrounded by mountain peaks – some more than 14,000 feet high.

Resident author and photographer Bernie Nagy and his wife, artist Linda Nagy, share their images of the wonders of South Park discovered while traveling on back roads and hiking trails.

South Park Colorado Nature’s Paradise book cover

This book, a continuation of a series on South Park, displays images of pristine streams, lakes, waterfalls, mountain passes, ancient pine trees, and valleys and meadows covered with vivid wildflowers. More than 105 wildflowers are featured and identified. In addition, there is a wildflower and fall color hike/drive guide and map of the area.

Discover why South Park beckons regardless of the weather or the season, showing its character, history, and innate beauty. With plentiful natural resources and historic sites, South Park is known as one of only 49 National Heritage Areas in the United States.

Winner of 5 Colorado Independent Publishers Awards. The 120-page, 265 color images, 11”x8.5.” hardbound coffee table book shows the splendor in the high country of Colorado while discovering the unparalleled beauty of South Park covered by award winning residence photographer Bernie Nagy.

New Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide helps take the mystery out of identifying wildflowers

After co-publishing an award-winning coffee-table book, South Park, Colorado: Nature’s Paradise in 2012 that included photographs and common names of over 100 wildflowers, my husband and I received many requests for a smaller book of wildflowers to take on trails. I began working on a wildflower guide to fulfill those requests. The idea was to have clear photos, common names, and a brief description of each wildflower included. Soon there came the realization that common names were not enough. Common names vary from person to person and from region to region. Many flowers have several common names and many others have no common names; but all have scientific names. It is the scientific name that is standard all over the world and allows everyone to “speak the same language”. Scientific names are always listed in italics. Each species also has a common family name as well as its scientific name.

How to Simplify Complicated Information

My project to produce a handy, simple guide for Colorado Rocky Mountain wildflowers became a real challenge. I began gathering information from every print and web source I could find. My goal was to take scientific information and write it in such a way that it could be understood by lay people. Slowly and painstakingly the book was pieced together. The result was Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide. The wildflowers included in the guide were photographed by my husband, Bernie Nagy, and were taken from the Rocky Mountain National Park to the Mosquito Range and from Crested Butte to the Southern San Juan Mountain Ranges. The images cover a period over four summers and feature the most common plus some uncommon wildflowers that one may find along trails and roadsides. From the thousands of plants in Colorado, only 200 are featured in the guide. Plants were chosen by how common they are, how noticeable they are, and some were chosen by their unique properties. Wildflowers in the guide were grouped according to color so that one can quickly find and identify an unfamiliar flower. A table of contents and index of all common and scientific names are helpful in locating specific information in the guide. I also included some of my illustrations of flower parts and arrangements and leaf parts and arrangements to help clarify some terms used throughout the guide.

Where to find Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide

More information about Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide is available at www.highcountryartworks.com. The eBook version is now available for all eBook devices including Kindle, Nook, iPad and iPhone. Watch for the handy, soft cover, 4”x 6” pocket guide available now. New 224-page softbound book is only $10.95.

THE FLUME article, June 7, 2012

Finding treasure in South Park, Colorado: Nature’s Paradise

Local authors win five awards in top categories, including highest average total score for all entries

By Sonja Oliver Correspondent

South Park residents Bernie and Linda Nagy were recently honored by the Colorado Independent Publishers Association (CIPA) and the CIPA Education Literary Foundation with the distinction of winning five awards for their book “South Park, Colorado: Nature’s Paradise.” On May 17 the Nagys were presented with the Past President’s Award, for scoring the highest aggregate average total score out of 189 entries in all categories. They also received three first-place CIPA EVVY Awards – in the travel category, cover design and illustrations – plus a second-place award for interior layout and design.

The EVVY awards are named after CIPA’s founder, Evelyn Kaye. The Nagys received the awards at CIPA’s 18th Annual Book Awards Banquet at the Lone Tree Arts Center in south metro Denver. The awards banquet celebrated CIPA’s 20th year and featured 29 book competition categories. This year’s event brought in 189 entries and featured 99 winners. According to marketing consultant Mary Walewski, each entry must meet a specific standard and criteria in order to be nominated for an award.

“The quality of books this year was absolutely stupendous,” Walewski said. “What’s really remarkable about Bernie’s (and Linda’s) book is they received the highest aggregate average points,” Walewski said. “We were absolutely overwhelmed with winning five CIPA EVVY’s for our second book,” said Bernie Nagy in a recent press release. “Bernie and I are both thrilled about the response to the new book and about winning so many awards. It gives me special pride and satisfaction since I am the co-author of this book,” Linda Nagy said. The Nagys consider the creation of “South Park, Colorado: Nature’s Paradise” as a “labor of love,” which comes across in the detail and quality of the book.

“I hope it inspires others to go out in nature, visit God’s country and enjoy the wonderful land that we have inherited from those who came before us and who created its rich history,” says Bernie Nagy on their website. “When we moved to Fairplay in South Park in 2005, we fell in love with the area. I began taking photos of all the events, changes in scenery, animals – all things that typify South Park,” he said. In 2010, the Nagys self-published their first book, “Colorado’s South Park, High Country Paradise,” in response to noticing that, although there were numerous books on South Park’s history, there were no photography books depicting “the beauty of its scenery, wildlife, people and seasons,” Bernie Nagy said in a recent interview.

They were challenged by South Park City Museum curator Carol Davis, who suggested they write a book. “Although my background was in prepress, and my wife was a graphic artist, we didn’t really have the expertise to publish a book, and our project was too regional to appeal to a traditional publisher,” Nagy says on his website. Following some online research, they discovered CIPA. The Nagys’ decision to publish independently came from their desire for excellence. The entire process, excepting the printing, was done entirely by the husband-and-wife team. “We like to do the work ourselves,” Bernie Nagy said. Soon after receiving three first-place CIPA EVVY awards and two International Book Awards in 2010, the Nagys went back to work on a second book on South Park. They both felt that there was more to be written and shown of the history and beauty of the area. The unique Colorado landscape known as South Park consists of a high grassland basin surrounded by mountain ridges with 14,000-foot peaks, grand vistas, lush prairies, with ranching, mining and railroad history and abundant wildlife. The Nagys spent 2010 and 2011 traveling extensively over the 1,000 square-mile area of South Park with a four-wheel-drive vehicle capturing images through the seasons. “I put over 40,000 miles on my Jeep,” Bernie Nagy said. “As with my first book, I wanted to share my experiences and let everyone know there is much more represented by the name “South Park” than a TV comedy series and more than the casual traveler sees while traveling along the 285 corridor,” he said. “South Park, Colorado: Nature’s Paradise” is a hardcover, 120-page, coffee table book featuring 265 color pictures that take the reader on a journey through the four seasons. They include photos of “pristine streams and lakes, mountain passes, ancient bristlecone pines, valleys and meadows covered with vivid wildflowers, and community local events.” There are more than 105 wildflowers featured and identified along with dramatic landscapes in the new publication. The book also includes travel and area information, plus a map of South Park in Park County, Colo., located 85 miles southwest of Denver. Since its publication in January, the book has received “five out of five stars” in reviews on Amazon.

Although the book’s content focuses on photography, Bernie Nagy said he has been told that it also tells a story of South Park through its photography. “I have to say this book was one of the most photographic/inspirational books I’ve ever reviewed or seen. The photography is absolutely breathtaking, the words are inspirational. The watercolor artwork is outstanding. There are times through this book that I can feel a sense of calm and peace. A place we all want to be each day,” Janine Wren wrote on May 22 in an Amazon review. The Nagys have said their next move is to market and promote their two books. “But we have more ideas in the works. There will be a third book in the series on South Park featuring a photo history of not just South Park, but all of Park County,” Bernie Nagy said. In addition, the couple is planning on a pocket guide of Rocky Mountain wildflowers that will feature clearly identified photographs and concise information at one’s fingertips. The Nagys plan to self-publish these two upcoming projects within the next two years. “Bernie and I have always worked together since we were first married in 1970.

Before it was the mail order business and creating catalogs. Now, in retirement, we still work together on creative projects and enjoy traveling and hiking throughout South Park,” Linda Nagy said. Both of the Nagys’ published books, “Colorado’s South Park, High Country Paradise” and “South Park, Colorado: Nature’s Paradise” can be purchased through the Nagys’ website, www.High-CountryArtworks.com, and at www.Amazon.com. The books are also available at Barnes and Noble stores in Denver as well as The Wildlife Experience, Denver Botanic Gardens and numerous retail stores throughout South Park, along the 285 corridor from Fairplay to Conifer, and at the Wilkerson Pass Welcome Center. A full list of retailers is listed on the website. On Amazon. com, the books are listed under categories such as: American History, Colorado, Old West, Fairplay, Non-fiction and Photography.

CIPA, THE FLUME article, Jun 7, 2012

Success of South Park book attributed partly to CIPA

Advice from publishers group members invaluable

By Sonja Oliver

Correspondent

Fairplay-area residents Bernie and Linda Nagy attribute the success of their two self-published books about South Park partly to the positive experience they have received from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association. Upon discovering CIPA, the Nagys said their experience with the organization has been invaluable. “From the first meeting we attended with CIPA, we knew that any help we needed would be available,” Bernie Nagy said in a prepared statement.

CIPA is a nonprofit association of independent book publishers, authors, future authors and related publishing service providers, and has been providing leadership since 1992. According to its website, CIPA’s mission statement is to “encourage cooperative efforts and the free exchange of information, experience and expertise to help members achieve and prosper while also assisting the writing and marketing of their books through cooperative ventures, education and networking.” Membership currently includes authors from other states, three foreign countries and Colorado who are able to take advantage of the resources made available through CIPA membership. Information provided on the website, cipacatalogue.com states: “Organization membership, along with active participation in CIPA programs, can open doors to many opportunities and can save thousands of dollars in costly mistakes.” As Colorado independent publishers and CIPA members, Bernie and Linda Nagy are eligible to submit their books to CIPA’s annual EVVY award contest, along with other CIPA publishers and members. According to the website, CIPA EVVY entries are judged and scored according to “established minimum acceptable criteria.

Only those entries that attain the minimum acceptable score become finalists with the highest scores in each category used by the judges to help determine each category’s winners – if any.” Judges are selected through CIPA’s competition judging qualification process and include teachers, business leaders, authors, critics, editors, readers and others. CIPA members are disqualified from judging. The CIPA EVVY Awards are given to independent publishers and self-published authors who include CIPA members. Members are not required to be residents of Colorado. This is the 18th year the EVVYs have been awarded for excellence in book publishing. The awards banquet celebrated CIPA’s 20th year and featured 29 book competition categories, including audio books and e-books.

This year’s event brought in 189 entries with 99 winners. “After being in a mail order business where fellow businesses were secretive and not willing to share information, we were amazed at how readily members of CIPA were willing to share experiences and information,” said the Nagy’s in their prepared statement. “From past and present officers, suppliers, and fellow authors, we found answers at every step of the way in producing our first book. CIPA College was also invaluable.” CIPA’s awards were also cited. “Linda and I would like to thank CIPA for the awards we have received and we will continue to strive to improve with each future publication. Our thanks also to Mike Daniels and Four Color Press for making the actual printing process go so smoothly. With my background in printing, I recognize quality work and that’s what Linda and I received,” said Bernie Nagy. He also acknowledged Tom Locke, editor of The Flume, for his editing prowess on both books. “Tom Locke is an excellent editor, and he was a big, big help,” Bernie Nagy said. He also had advice for aspiring authors. “For all of those CIPA members who are still working to publish a first book, don’t feel intimidated or overwhelmed. Believe in yourself, but when you need help, keep asking questions until you find the answers.”

Colorado’s South Park: High Country Paradise, by Bernie Nagy, $29.95. From south Denver to South Park is a stretch of raw and open land sliced by U.S. 285 to the south of Denver. South Park may not be filled with the sylvan glades and gentle aspen meadows that define many other parts of the state, but it has its own beauty.

Photographer Bernie Nagy includes some 270 pictures in this colorful book. They show South Park’s sweeping vistas in all seasons, its inhabitants, which include burros and buffalo as well as people, and its towns — Fairplay and Como.

There are photos of cemeteries and deserted cabins, burro races, fireworks and parades. But the most haunting photographs are those that show the sweep and majesty of the South Park landscape.

Fairplay-area resident publishes South Park photo book
To be “great asset” in promoting area

By Debra Orecchio
Correspondent

A dream of three years in the making is coming true for South Park resident Bernie Nagy

He’s self-published his first book, Colorado’s South Park: High Country Paradise, which is what he’s termed a photo travel essay book.

Nagy’s been sitting on pins and needles waiting for the first advance copies of the book, which just recently arrived. The book looks better than he expected, he said in an e-mail.

The Author Bernie Nagy has been trying to capture the essence of South Park through the lenses of his camera for the past three years. (Courtesy Photo)

Nagy wanted to do something different from other books on the market. While many great books have been written about the history of South Park, there weren’t any books showing the real beauty of the area, he said.

Nagy’s been a resident of Park County for six years, and he has learned a lot about the history of the area while volunteering at the South Park City Museum. He wanted to see more of it, but he couldn’t find a photo book, so he started taking pictures.

The book is a collection of the best of three years of photos Nagy has taken throughout the different seasons in South Park. He pulled the photos for the book from more than 8,000 he had taken during those three years on many hikes and four-wheel-drive trips during the morning and afternoon hours. One of his biggest challenges was deciding which photos would make it into the book; he just had too many to choose from. Some of his real favorites didn’t make it in, he said. But he wanted to show the diverse and “real” South Park.

The photos Nagy put in the book show the towns, the mountain ranges and passes, and the rivers and lakes all around the South Park area.

But the book is not just photos. Nagy included the rich history of the South Park area, like the mining and railroading. He also captured some of the most important community events, including the World Championship Pack Burro Race, the Pack/Walk Llama Race, the South Park Ranch Rodeo, the Park County Fair and Boreas Pass Railroad Day.

Gary Nichols, director of tourism and community development for Park County, said that he thinks the book will be a great asset for promoting the area.

“He’s definitely captured the essence of certain seasons and attributes very well in his photography,” Nichols said of Nagy.

Nagy photographed the amazing colors in the wildflowers throughout South Park, as well as the many wild animals that roam the area, including moose, buffalo, pronghorn, wild burros, smaller creatures and birds.

Watercolor paintings and a few photos by Nagy’s wife, Linda, are also in the book.

Carol Davis, the curator for the South Park City Museum, said she hasn’t seen a copy of the finished book, but she has seen some of the proofs before the book went to the printer, and she thinks the book will be fantastic.

“It has so much of the things in the county that a lot of people are never going to see because they’re not willing to climb that far or drive that far,” Davis said.

Nagy is hoping to have a good response to his first publication. He already has orders coming in from all over the country, he said. He’s anxiously awaiting when he can display it to the local public.

Nichols also hopes that Nagy’s successful with the book. He thinks it will be a good coffee table book that people will be happy to have as a reference, especially for people who come to visit the South Park area.

Davis agreed that it’s going to be a great coffee table book. The museum will be selling copies of the book; she hopes everybody buys one.

Nagy’s first book signing will be at The Flume’s Holiday Extravaganza at Fitzsimmons Middle School on November 21 and 22.

A copy of the book can be purchased through Nagy’s Web site at www.highcountryartworks.com.

Note: Flume editor Tom Locke helped with proofreading Nagy’s book.
