High Desert Gallery in Redmond wishes all our our friends and art collectors a warm and creative holiday season, and with that wish we are planning special events and extended hours for your convenience:

Saturday, November 28th, High Desert Gallery Holiday Open House and Plein Air Painters of Oregon Annual Show from Noon to 5pm. Please join us for a unique opportunity to see plein air paintings by some of the region's best landscape artists. Refreshments served!

Friday, December 4th, the “Home for The Holidays” event runs from 5pm to 8pm. Please join us for an exciting group show featuring one-of-a-kind original artwork by Kay Baker, Sue Gomen Honnell, Rosalyn Kliot, Patty Freeman-Martin, Vivien Olsen, and Sue Favinger Smith, as well as pottery from Patrick Horsley, and glass from Kyle Kraiter and Jenelle Lynn Kathan.

Special Extended Saturday Hours: December 5, 12, and 19, we will be open 10am to 5pm.

On Christmas Eve, December 24, and New Years Eve, December 31, we will be closing a bit early, and we will be closed Christmas Day and New Years Day.

Top Custom Picture Framing Award: Myrna Dow Honored by PPFA

High Desert Gallery Of Central Oregon is honored to announce that Gallery Director, Myrna Dow, has again received top honors from the Professional Picture Framing Association (PPFA) in the 2009-2010 Pacific Northwest Cascades Chapter Print Framing competition.

Each year, PPFA chapters hold their annual Print Competition, where entrants frame the same piece, and the Open Competition, where entrants frame an item of the framer's choice. Entries are judged on a variety of criteria, including expert knowledge of preservation materials and practices, overall impression of the creative design, technical skills necessary to achieve the unified goal, design and creative elements, and a critical assessment of skills. The judging is rigorous and the professional picture framers placing First, Second, Third, and honorable mention advance to the International Competition.

Myrna Dow competed in the Print Framing Competition on November 1, 2009, in Portland, Oregon, and was awarded First Place, Top Honors and Peoples Choice Awards. These honors join a long list of prior International Framing distinctions, including First Place and Top Honors in the Professional Picture Framing Association (PPFA) 2007-2008 International Open Framing Competition and Third Place in the Professional Picture Framing Association 2008-2009 International Print Framing Competition.

Myrna Dow framed "Heart Rod Guitar" by artist Rod Morris, and her entry will continue on to the PPFA International Print and Open Framing Competition to be held during the PPFA Annual Convention in Anaheim, California, February 20 – 23, 2010. We've included a sneak peek at the artwork – we can't reveal the complete framed artwork until after the International Competition in February, 2010.

Myrna Dow has been the creative force behind High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon, and High Desert Frameworks!, which currently offers Fine Art and Custom Framing in Art Galleries located in Sisters, Redmond, and two locations in Bend, Oregon. The constants in her artistic vision include innovative design principles, expert knowledge of preservation materials and practices, and an expert understanding of color.

About Myrna Dow: Myrna Dow, owner, director, and professional picture framer of High Desert Gallery and High Desert Frameworks! has a background in the arts and framing industry spanning more than twenty years. Earning a BFA in Graphic Arts from Portland State, Dow first started in the graphic arts field working for several large agencies and type houses. In the early 80's she began her career in the gallery business as a sales associate and gallery manager. After several years, she migrated to the custom framing environment and mentored with an accomplished professional picture framer. In 1999 Dow relocated to Central Oregon and soon thereafter established High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon.

High Desert Frameworks!, the award-winning custom picture framing studio for High Desert Gallery is please to announce their first annual Holiday Greeting Card Charity Sale and Auction, The event kicks off at High Desert Gallery in Bend Oregon during the Bend Gallery Association First Friday Art Walk on Friday, December 4, 2009 from 5-9pm. A select group of professional Central Oregon artists have created 4”x 6” and 5” x 7” holiday greeting cards. High Desert Frameworks has custom framed each greeting card and will offer the works of art for a “Buy-It-Now” price or the works can be purchased through a silent auction bidding process. At least thirty percent of the sales goes to a Central Oregon not-for-profit charity of the artist's choice.

High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon is pleased to announce the opening exhibition and sale of work by nationally known Oregon artist, Cristina Acosta in our Bend Oregon fine art gallery. High Desert Gallery in Bend is located on the retail ground floor of the Oxford Hotel at 10 NW Minnesota Avenue at Lava. The Gallery is open daily from 10am to 6pm and will be open late on Bend First Friday Art Walk, Friday December 4th 5-9pm and Saturday, December 12th 4-9pm for the Minnesota Avenue Holiday Block Party. About Cristina Acosta: Cristina's career has included: A two-year stint as a billboard mural and lettering artist. Five years teaching college art classes. Nine years as an artisan tile designer & production artist for her nationally distributed signature line of ceramic tile during the 1990’s, life long love of the arts and more. Her artistry is featured in a variety of books and magazines, including her successful art book, Paint Happy! (North Light Books, ©2002,2004). She illustrated the children’s book, When Woman Became the Sea (Beyond Words Pub., ©1998) and contributed to many other books and periodicals including Artist Magazine, Pure Inspiration, Better Homes and Gardens, House Beautiful, Latina magazine, Latina Style, Good Housekeeping, and Woman’s Day home design publications. Cristina continually paints and writes from her studio at her home in the rain-shadow of the Cascade Mountains. She creates three distinct series of paintings: Paint Happy series, Hispanic Heritage series (Madonnas) and her oils including her Animal Spirit series. Despite the different styles, her work is typified by her lush use of color, dynamic design and the presence of joy. Museums, galleries and collectors nationwide collect and exhibit her work. “Perception and Imagination: Exploring the Landscape,” a new collection of oil paintings by Oregon artist Sue Favinger Smith, continues through November at High Desert Gallery at the Oxford Hotel, 10 NW Minnesota Street at Lava.

The opening reception and Sue's new work was very well received during the Bend First Friday Art Gallery Walk last evening. If you missed the artist reception please plan on visiting us! High Desert Gallery in Bend Oregon is open Monday through Saturday 10am to 5pm. Call ahead as some evenings we stay open later to 5:30 or beyond.

About Sue Favinger Smith: Sue Smith began her award-winning career at the age of 50, earning an art degree from Oregon State University in 2005. Since then she has focused on oil painting, exploring the techniques and color used by painters who inspire her. Sue has participated in national and regional exhibitions, solo and three-person shows, and is a member of Women Artists of the West, Oil Painters of America, and the prestigious National Association of Women Artists, the oldest professional arts organization for women in the country. Her work is in private collections across the country.

Plein Air Painters of Oregon In Redmond Through November 30th

Please join us for a unique opportunity to see plein air paintings by some of the region's best landscape artists. High Desert Gallery will be hosting the Plein Air Painters of Oregon 2nd Annual Show in our historic gallery space in downtown Redmond, 453 SW 6th Street at Evergreen. The exhibition is a continuation of the show that premiered last month at High Desert Gallery at the Oxford Hotel.

Plein Air Painting is an art form that has become increasingly more popular as artists carry forward the traditions of the early Impressionists. Completed outside and on location, the emphasis is on capturing the immediacy of the landscape and the challenge of painting in changing light and weather conditions. On view will be small format, elegant, and affordable landscape paintings that appeal to art collectors of this highly desirable genre.

The exhibition and sale is ongoing from November 6th through November 30th, showcased in our elegant Redmond Gallery space that still retains the 1914 tin ceiling tiles and high floor-to-ceiling windows. Come join us for this November month long holiday event, titled “Celebration Oregon!” which was juried by Cindy Briggs and selected as an official Oregon 150 sesquincentennial partner.

An Evening of Fine Art and Music - First Friday Art Gallery Walk November 6th

Join us for an evening of fine art, music, wine, and some holiday spirit as High Desert Gallery at the Oxford Hotel hosts an artist reception featuring Sue Favinger Smith's exhibition of oil paintings, with a live performance by Erin Cole-Baker. The event will take place on Friday, November 6th, from 5pm to 9, at our new gallery space, located at 10 NW Minnesota at Lava, in conjunction with the Bend Gallery Association First Friday Art Gallery Walk.

On view will be selections from Sue Smith's oil-on-panel Mesa Series as well as her more traditional explorations of the landscape. Erin Cole-Baker's live performance will be one of only two shows she will be doing here till the end of the year.

Smith has been consistently challenging traditional stereotypes and often embraces multiple approaches to her subject, ranging from non-representation abstraction to Impressionism. Color, texture, and an intimate connection with materials identify Smith's work.

Cole-Baker will be touring in France during November, then returning for the new CD release (Talon and Spur) in the United States during December. She'll head for New Zealand for the summer and to release the CD over there.

The evening promises to be filled with good art, good music, good cheer and the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.
