I was reading Glamour the other day on the three hour train ride home from Chicago (with an Amish man reading over my shoulder the whole time.. kind of awkward) and I stumbled upon this article on Zooey Deschanel's nails. I thought it looked easy enough so I did a tutorial on it for you guys (with a little twist).
here's her nails:

1. take off your old nail polish. I know, sometimes I just paint over the old too.. but for this you need to because the base color isn't that dark and the old polish will show through. I like this kind from cvs, it's cheap, it doesn't make your hands super dry, and it doesn't use a whole box of tissues or spill everywhere.

2. Paint your nails. I used this OPI color called pink-ing of you. I thought it was a little more interesting and girlier than just the plain white that zooey has! (although obviously that looked better with her dress). But for lighter colors you will want two coats AT LEAST of polish, otherwise it looks all weird and sheer.

3. Next you will want to wait for the nails to completely dry and then take an old liquid eyeliner that you have lying around, and pull the brush out, you should rinse it and then dip it in to a black nailpolish for the next part. Here's the eyeliner I used if you want an example.

4. Then you want to take the eyeliner brush and dip in in your black nail polish. You should make three little dots up each nail. At the top you should make a bow. It took me a little bit to figure this out, at least an easy way to make sure it looked symmetrical, and the easiest is to make a sideways x first, then draw a line at each end, and then fill it in! Heres how mine turned out:

DIY Tory Burch Dip-Dye Jeans

If you're just as bored as we are this summer, then you'll love the amount of DIY projects we're posting.

We can't stop making crafts!!!

Anyway, its doing wonders for both our wallets and wardrobes, so you should hop on the DIY bandwagon if you haven't already done so.

Tory Burch Dip-Dyed Denim, $195
Recreating this look is a little tricky. The ombre fade calls for some trial and error stages, but I think if you practice on some old denim first you can really get the hang of it. I'm an impatient person so I just went straight ahead and did this on a good pair of jeans... they turned out all right but I think I could've made them even more fantastic-looking.

1. Start with a plain pair of jeans. They can be light or medium wash, but I advise against using dark wash jeans. I used a pair of H&M jeggings I bought several years ago.

2. You will need Rit Concentrated Dye (about $4 at any craft supply store). I chose purple dye but there are many other colors.

3. Dissolve the packet of Rit Concentrated Dye in 2 cups of hot water.
4. Make sure to stir so it dissolves completely!
5. Add the solution to a basin of about 3 gallons of hot water and stir. I used a bucket but you can also use a sink.
6. Soak the bottom 6 inches of your jeans (while stirring!) for 10 minutes in the basin. After the 10 minutes***, add in another 6 inches of fabric for 5 minutes (keep stirring!). Then do it again for another 5 minutes.
***I think this is where I messed up. Instead of just adding in more fabric I think I should have taken the jeans out and wrung out the excess dye. Because I didn't do this step, my jeans weren't sufficiently ombre.

7. Hand wash your jeans through hot water until the water runs clear, and then with cold water. Let dry outside. (I put mine through the washer and dryer as well.)

There you go! Tory Burch style jeans minus the huge blow to your bank account. I'm definitely going to try this again to see if I can make them look more ombre.

everywhere in magazines and on lookbook I see these super cool people with chains on their heads and/or legs or wherever else. Heres Vanessa Hudgens with one:

i decided i could try to make one myself and it actually turned out alright so i'll share it with you guys.

you'll need:

1. a bunch of old necklaces you don't like wearing anymore.

2. two pairs of pliers

thats it! lalala so easy

1. okay so first what i did is i opened up the loop on one of the necklaces by taking the pliers and using the cutting thing in the back, i made sure that the two necklaces combined was a little bit bigger than the circumference of my head so that it would hang down on the sides like in the picture above.(if the two together is too long just cut off some of the chain of one of the necklaces.)

2. next i just used the two pliers to pull apart the loop (you'll only need to do this once for the circumference because you can just use the clasps of either necklace to connect them on the other side.) then i pinched the loop together around the loop of the other necklace and clasped the other end together so i had one long circle.

3. then you'll need another chain to go across the center of your head, i used a beaded one because i thought it was interesting. if you decide to do that you can tie the ends to the chain, but if not you can just do the same clipping and pinching together of the loops that you did in the first two steps. here's what mine looks like:

I also added a charm to the center of mine by just connecting the loops together again.

DIY Topshop American Flag Jorts

Let's be honest here: we're struggling college students. We eat ramen 8 out of the 12 months of the year. We pay for our coffee in change. We spray our clothes with febreeze to avoid paying the $1.25/load charge (is this just me? uh...). We search out sketchy bars with cheap beer, and even after realizing that the beer is 50% water, we still drink it.

Most of us don't have the money to be buying designer label clothes.

(If you do, then good for you. Buy me an effing drink sometime)

$75 Topshop American Flag jorts

So, after months of lusting for a delicious pair of $75 Topshop American Flag jorts, I started thinking. SOMEONE somewhere had to have made those jorts. They sat down with a needle, thread, and some cheap fabric and made those jorts with their bare hands (okay maybe a sewing machine). So I sat down and made those jorts, dammit.

Here's how you can too:

THINGS YOU NEED
1. Needle, thread, and lots of pins
2. Fabric glue
3. Cool fabric (I chose American Flag because I wanted to recreate the shorts)
4. Scissors

1. Find a pair of high-waisted, light-washed jeans in your closet or the Goodwill.
2. Mark off where you're going to cut. (Tip: the cut should be a little lower in the back)
3. Cut.
4. Fold up the hems of the shorts. You will probably need to iron them in place to get them to stay.

1. Lay the fabric over the shorts and pin it down.
2. The pins should be as close to the previous stitching as possible.
3. After you have sewn the fabric onto the shorts and cut off excess fabric, put a small amount of fabric glue over the stitching. This will help keep it in place.
4. A cute doggy can help with emotional support.

Voila! All done!

Soft Summer Feet

So you've just finished up your finals and are ready to work on your summer tan (24/7 studying has left you with a vampire-like complexion). You go to put on your bikini and flip flops when you see (cue stereotypical horror movie sound bite) YOUR FEET LOOK LIKE DIRTY SHRIVELED CRISPS!! Have no fear, I have the perfect solution to dry feet and just in time for sandal season!

This is actually the easiest beauty tip ever.

1. Choose a fairly heavy moisturizing lotion/creme.

2. Apply all over feet.

3. Put on socks.

4. Wear while you're getting ready in the morning.

Tada! Beautiful and soft summer feet.

If your feet are REALLY dry I suggest doing this before bed, using vaseline instead of lotion, and wearing socks while you sleep.

**Grace thinks I'm really weird for doing this because apparently her feet are perfect and naturally soft at all times.

1. Aveda Foot Relief, $20 for 4.2 fl oz - I like this one because it really works and smells like how you'd expect things from Aveda to smell, super natural and calming.
2. The Body Shop Intensive Foot Resolve (Peppermint), $18 for 3.4 fl oz - This one is great to wear to bed because the peppermint and menthol are really calming. It makes your feet feel like you just got a pedicure!
3. The Body Shop Body Butter (Satsuma), $18 for 6.9 oz - My favorite! I've been buying this product since middle school (2006ish?) and I've always bought the same kind: Satsuma. It smells citrus-y and fresh, and I mostly use it as a hand creme but it works well anywhere. The Body Butter line comes in so many more scents (Pink Grapefruit, Vanilla, Coconut, Japanese Cherry Blossom, Shea, etc.) so I suggest trying a small one out (1.7 oz for $6) next time you go shopping.
4. Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream, ~$13 for 16 fl oz - Cetaphil is a great skincare brand, and their moisturizing cream is great for sensitive skin. It is unscented and absorbs into skin quickly.

So because I was too lazy/ it's finals week and so we couldn't really make time for a "outfit of the day" post, I made this little thing on polyvore to show what I would be wearing this summer. Mainly as you can see I'm obsessed with anything with a interesting back, black shorts, lace, and backpacks. Backpacks are my fav thing. Because of this little yellow backpack I have, some of my friends call me Dora. But anyways, this will make a great summer wardrobe and be perfect for music festivals and stuff.

Left to right

1. Once again, we returned to Lulu's for their Munch A Bunch deal. This is a picture of their Calamari dish (one of my personal favorites). It probably seems like Grace and I go there far too often, but you can never have too much Lulus. At $18.95 for unlimited dim sum and entrees, who could refuse?
2. On Saturday I went to the Barstool Blackout Tour at the House of Blues. It's kind of like a rave geared towards college students. After previously attending Zed's Dead, Diplo, and Dayglow Blu, I was pretty unimpressed. The House of Blues is an undoubtedly awesome venue, but the place was overrun by high school kids and creepy frat star wanna-be's trying to dance with me (sorry fellas, I'm GDI till I die). At several points during the "rave" I had a legitimate fear of dying... have you ever heard stories about people getting trampled to death?? It's a real phenomenon!! Anyway, aside from being disgusted by hormonal boys and constantly fearing for my life, I had a great time with some of my good friends from Loyola and I'm sure it will be a night I won't forget.
3. April showers sure do bring May flowers! Loyola's campus is overrun with these beautiful tulips, and just in time for finals. Its great to be able to take a break from all the academic stress and just enjoy the surroundings, even if only for a moment.
4. The Dalai Lama came to visit us Loyolans last Thursday. Although I was unable to get a ticket, it was great to feel the spiritual buzz around campus. Students of all faiths were pumped to go see His Holiness, and I think the student body's collective excitement exemplifies Loyola's accepting environment. How could you NOT love the Dalai Lama... he's so cute!! And wise and a leader and stuff...

1. L'Oreal True Match Super-Blendable Blush in Rosy Outlook: $10.95
This blush has made me a true believer in L'Oreal's True Match line. I love it so much! It goes on smooth and blends so easily. It is highly pigmented so you really don't need a lot to add color to your cheeks. I'd even compare this blush to NARS blush in Orgasm (NARS addicts don't kill me!). I'll definitely be buying more True Match products in the future.

2. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Kiss Me Coral: $7.99
I've been searching for an affordable yet quality coral lipstick for a while now, and Revlon seems to be the only drugstore brand that offers the exact orangey-red color I want! Red lips have always been a classic beauty staple, but this spring season bright oranges have made their mark on the runway. The color is sassy, fun, and so perfect for spring. It makes a great daytime statement but also works as a fun lip color for going out. The Revlon Super Lustrous dries out my lips pretty fast, so I have to make sure to exfoliate before applying the lipstick. I'm guessing I'll have to splurge in order to get this color in a long-lasting and moisturizing lipstick.

M.A.C. Tinted Lip Conditioner in Fuchsia Fix: $15
There's not much to say about this product except that it works. I like this a lot better than chapstick because it goes on smoother, tastes kind of sweet, and adds a nice tint to my lips at the same time. Also, it has SPF 15 so I can wear it outside and not worry about sun damage! My favorite color is the Fuchsia Fix because it adds an awesome pop of pink, but the Lip Conditioner also comes in Petting Pink (a more natural pink) and Soothing Beige (darker nude color). M.A.C. also offers a non-tinted lip conditioner that does the same thing but without the color. Definitely worth the splurge.

1. my nailssss! they are just from a forever 21 color that i found. And the glitter is some hello kitty glitter that I found at limited too? (don't judge me Allison). 2. BOOOOO! have you guys seen him? he's like the cutest dog on the planet. go to youtube right now and search boo the dog. seriously. he's the bomb. 3. I WANT A POLAROID CAMERA SO BAD. but they are so damn expensive, well the film is. However, my friend has one and we took a picture with it. That's my friend mark, and there's Suhana. 4. hahaha Suhana got a coloring book for her birthday and this is what we did to batman.

1. I got this really cool necklace for fairly cheap at a place in Evanston called Crossroads Trading Company. They have several locations around Chicagoland but I figured the one in Evanston would have nicer clothes. It's a resale shop so I figured I would sell some old clothes there as well. Instead of taking cash and getting only 35% of their profit, I opted to get 50% of their profit as in-store credit. Overall, I ended up with a $200 shopping spree! All of their clothes are designer and in great condition. Some are even overstock items donated by area boutiques.
2. This is a really cool sparkly nail polish from Urban Outfitters. It goes on REALLY sparkly and is awesome. Its pretty hard to get off though.

Today for dinner Ridley, Grace and I went to Lulu's, a hip little asian spot off the Purple Line Davis stop in Evanston. On Mondays and Tuesdays they offer a deal called "Munch a Bunch": for a flat rate of $20 per person, your table can order as much as you want of almost anything on the menu. IT IS THE MOST AMAZING DEAL EVER!! Included in our feast was:

Tiffany Box Manicure
As I sit here wide awake at 3:18 AM waiting for my nails to dry, I can't help but ponder the inner depths of my mind. If I've learned anything this year, it would be to not sweat the small stuff. Four peers of mine have lost their lives this year and their passing has forced me to reflect on what really matters in life. Although I can't say I'm an expert at living (I make plenty of mistakes), I think I've gone through a major change in character due to this past year's shocks. I'm not going to get all sappy because this isn't what we're here for. I will say, however, that I think if everyone took some time to reflect on three things closest to their heart, and proceed to live their life for ONLY those things in the next week, that everyone might be just a little happier and less stressed. Keep calm my friends; college is not anywhere near the worst of it. Good luck studying :)

1. If you're wondering if that is a stuffed squirrel wearing a hat on a wall, then you are absolutely right. The other morning some friends and I went for a walk around Roger's Park and found this awesome/creepy little antique store. There were so many things to look at; I was a little overwhelmed. Robin Squirrel here was just one of the many strange additions to the store. It was a good time except then a hobo with eyes facing two different directions walked in and starting causing a ruckus so we left...
2. My latest lip color obsession is coral/orange. Its such a springy color and is very close to red so I like to believe it looks good with my skin tone. The color I am wearing in the picture is Revlon's "Kiss Me Coral". I got it for about $8-9 at Walgreens. It goes on smooth and keeps my lips feeling moisturized for a couple hours, however, I found that wearing clear lip gloss over the color makes it last longer. It works well day to night! Revlon was also the only drugstore brand I could find that had the perfect coral/orange shade I was looking for. Well worth the higher price.
3. I'm sure I already have tons of haters because of these glasses, but I think they're AWESOME. They are tortoise shell frames and yes, they are prescription. I've always worn square rimmed glasses in the past so this time I went for a bold, round style. Call me a hipster or Harry Potter but I'd like to see you pull these bad boys off.
4. Last but not least, I'd like to tell you all about the AWESOME place where I got my glasses: Warby Parker. It's an exclusively online store and all of their glasses are only $95, with no S&H fees. Thinking Over a Cup of Coffee

Good afternoon! First I must start by wishing everyone a happy Easter. For those of you who aren't Christian (like myself), I suggest you use today as an excuse to go out and buy yourself a basket of candy. While sitting here enjoying the company of my dogs and the aroma of my fresh brewed Kenya blend coffee, I've also been mulling over a social conundrum in my mind. A boy (who shall remain unnamed) has been relentlessly pursuing me for the past couple of months. I've always turned down his advancements because he seems to have a "girlfriend" of sorts, however, he recently told me that he had ended things with this girl. A side note: this girl is gorgeous, seems sweet, and is (blindly) loyal to this boy. I see no reason for him to act the way he does towards her. Anyway, this boy told me he had ended things and so I felt a little less weird about texting him back and hanging out with him. I even considered hanging out with him friday night when he asked, but was too tired to go out.
CUT TO TODAY: I see a picture uploaded to facebook by the girl that reveals he obviously DID NOT end things with her. Not that I care, I was never interested in him anyway. The only reason I DO care is that this poor girl is being manipulated by a grade-A SKEEZE. So what do I do?

1. Tell the girl what's up. If she didn't know before then she needs to know now.
2. Casually bring it up to one of her friends so I'm not in the line of fire.
3. Talk to the guy about it. This probably wouldn't work.
4. Do NOTHING. She should know by now that this guy is a dud, and if she isn't willing to break it off then its her problem, not mine.
5. Blog about it.

Obviously I chose option 5 because it means no harm to anyone and I still get to rant. UGH boys like him shouldn't be allowed to date girls like her.

1. Last night we went to our friend Suhana's house for a traditional Indian meal for her birthday. She told us she was going to give each of us an Indian dot upon arrival (which I thought was a joke), but believe it or not we all got Bindi's! The one I have on was one of the more ornate and colorful selections available.
2. Aside from traditional Indian food, we also were offered delicious treats in celebration of Suhana's birth. Aside from a scrumptious chocolate cake, Suhana's mom made her own dainty desserts, as seen in the picture: milk chocolate/white chocolate cups filled with homemade whipped cream and topped with a fresh raspberry. I ate about 2. Or five.
3. Some of our handsome guy friends recently pledged Delta Sigma Phi as founding members of Loyola's new fraternity. I was given a pin and I wear it proudly on my new purse from H&M (only $12 and super cute!). Apparently if a pledge sees us wearing the pin they have to buy us coffee? I haven't been offered any coffee yet but I'm still hoping for that special day...
4. Last weekend our university brought in comics Jim Gaffigan and Judah Friedlander for a show exclusive to Loyola students and faculty. At one point during the show I got up to use the ladies room and who do I run into but the one and only JUDAH FRIEDLANDER! I'm a huge fan of 30 Rock and I love his character on the show. I got to meet him and was super nervous and didn't know what to say but at least I got a picture right? Way more cool than meeting the Biebs.

Crimping Iron

Grace bought this really cheap crimping iron (probably because it was pink) and we tested it out to see if it met our beauty tool standards. Surprisingly, it worked really well and caused us to think that the 90s grunge look should be reborn in a more tailored and sophisticated fashion. We also thought Grace looked pretty badass when we dressed her up in ripped tights, jean shorts, a black vest, black leather army boots, and plenty of chain necklaces. What do you think? Should 90s grunge make a comeback or should it stay hidden away in the basement with our Barbies and Bop-Its?

An Intro

Hello reader(s). Is that narcissistic of me to think that we actually have reader(s) already? Well whatever, I'm just going to assume that someone (besides Grace) is reading this because it makes me feel a little less weird about blogging. I digress.

Neither of us really know what this blog is going to be about, but what we do know is that we have lots of things to say about the world, people, and events around us. Basically we just want to talk about ourselves because in the real world it is usually considered annoying and inappropriate to be so self-consumed. In lies the beauty of the virtual world: THERE ARE NO RULES.

my first post is some of mine and allisons facebook pictures together.

1. this was the time that our friend nick fell asleep in our otter mask. not in his bed. in someone else's room. also, i'm not sure why i'm wearing a robin hood hat and i'm pretty sure that this is the first night me and allison hung out. it's clear from this picture it was going to be beautiful friendship.

2. this was another appearance of the otter mask when me and allison didn't do anything except take a bunch of macbook pictures with our two friends and then a bunch of random girls that we don't know came in to allison's room and took shots with us. all in all, it was a success.

3. this was the night of halloween when we thought people would go out because, hello it's halloween. but then we got to the bar and there was like six people there and they were all over the age of 30 and so we went back to allison's and took macbook pictures in a otter mask. ps. i was tinkerbell, allison was gold.. (???) and vaiva was beer.

4. this was the time we went to clinique before new years eve in indianapolis and got our makeup done. we told them that we wanted a 'understated smokey eye' and came out looking like asian girls. so we took a picture.

5. this is a picture at one of our favorite bars in downtown chicago where boys buy us shots for dancing on the bars. at this point this ASSHOLE was pulling me off the bar to make out with me, which is why im not posing. sorry i just went on a little rant. but this is usually a good time.

6. this was the time that we went to a frat party and they told us the theme was neon and white out, so we decked ourselves out. then, we got there and everyone was dressed normally and at some point allison disappeared and i sent suhana home and then i was the only one dressed like this and therefore i felt awkward and made out with a boy who looked like an anorexic voldemort and kept calling me sammi...

7. this is the time we sort of dated two boys that were best friends too and so we went to a frat formal with them and then later on they were both kind of jerks to us so i'm just going to keep this picture and pretend we went with each other. also, that's our black friend amare. he likes to photobomb pictures of us and we keep him around so we can say we have a black friend. (JK) (kinda).
