Charlene Lipsey (front) out running Emily Menges and Olicia Williams

The first events begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday at Cicero North Syracuse high school.

Last year Long Island cleaned up at the state championships taking home seven Federation titles. Hempstead's Charlene Lipsey set a meet record in the 800 (2:07.46), Roslyn's Emily Lipari won the 1,500 and 3,000-meter championships, while Kyle Merber of Hills West won 1,600 and Mepham's Chris Parker took the 110 hurdles. Great Neck South's Terrance Livingston won the 800 and Baldwin's Nicholas Guscott took the 100.

If you are looking for favorites this year, Lipsey, Lipari and Livingston are all back for another go-around in their events.

Garden City's girl's 4x400 and 4x800-meter relay teams have had fabulous outdoor seasons and could challenge for a title. Look for Trojans star Emily Menges (800) and Michelle Rotondo (400 hurdles) to make a push for a championship.

The Bay Shore girl's 4x800 team has been equally as impressive as Garden City's. Bay Shore also has Stephanie Barnes in the triple and long jump and Cherrice Brown in the discus, who should be added to the short list of contenders.

Middle Country's Miles Lewis was scratched from the 100 so he could concentrate on the 200-meter dash and the 4x100.

Other challengers include North Babylon's Vanessa Stewart in the shot put and Commack's Mike Levine in the discus. Stewart has been the island's top shot putter this season, while Levine won the state qualifier with a toss of 189 feet, 4 inches.

East Hampton's Emily Hren and Smithtown East's Ashley Beck are expected to challenge in the high jump. Hren won the Suffolk state qualifier with a jump of 5-4, while Beck qualified with a jump of 5-3. Hren cleared 5-6 during the regular season.

Uniondale's Nathaniel Mercer should challenge in the 110 hurdles and also helped the Knight's 4x100 team win the Nassau state qualifier.

Elmont's Valencia Hannon won the 100 at the Nassau qualifier in a career-best time of 11.98. Hempstead's Velma Morant, who hit 11.8 on the stop watch during the season, will also be a factor.

Wheatley's Joshua Haghighi, Riverhead's Mike Smith and Holy Trinity's Anthony Thomas will all be factors in the shot put and discus.

Other CHSAA standouts expected to contend are St. John the Baptist's Anne Carey (3,000 - 1,500), St. Anthony's Olicia Williams (800) and teammate Olivia Abbate (hurdles). Boys standouts include Mike Mastanduno (200) and Chaminade distance man Mike Kiley and Kellenberg's 4x800-meter relay team.

Holy Trinity's Kyle Brown, who high jumped 6-6 at the CHSAA Intersectionals, will also be among the favorites. So should the Titans' 4x400 team, which ran 3:19.53 at the Intersectionals. St. John the Baptist's 4x100 team also can't be counted out.

Look for more changes in the top 5 this week. Yes, teams do flow in and out, but part of that has to do with the nature of the sport. With teams splitting their squads between meets, which happens from time to time, it's tough to get a read on the real strength of a squad at an invitational.

The North Shore girls team for example had some of their best runners at the Loucks games. On the same weekend they had most of their team at their own invitational. It happens with a lot of teams.

The St. Anthony's girl's and boy's teams both made a strong case after winning the CHSAA league championship on Saturday. The Uniondale boy's team had an excellent showing at the Eddy games and at their Division championships and could be back in the top 5.

For any team or coach frustrated about not being in the top 5, remember, it's a fluid list that changes from week to week. And with the county championship and state qualifiers coming up, there is still time for teams to make a move upward.

Charlene Lipsey and Emily Menges at the St. Anthony's Invitational
Frank Koester photo

It was strong day for Long Island at the Loucks Games in White Plains on Friday. It all started with Commack's Mike Levine, who set a meet record in the discus with a toss of 185-2, besting Iona Prep's Sal Gigante's mark of 180 set in 1997.

Charlene Lipsey of Hempstead shined again in the 800, taking first in 2:09.58, edging out Garden City's Emily Menges (2:10.61), Brianna Welch of North Shore (2:14.06) and another Trojan Michelle Rotondo (2:15.54).

Emily Lipari won the 3,200 in 10:21.32, beating out Aisling Cuffe and North Shore's Samantha Nadel, Hempstead's Velma Morant took the 100 in 12.24 and North Babylon's Vanessa Stewart won the shot put with a throw of 43-10.

Terrance Livingston won the 800 in 1:52.5, while Michael Mastanduno won the long jump (22 feet, 10 inches).

The Massapequa Chief Invitational also had some standout performances.

Kellenberg (1:01.8) edged St John the Baptist (1:02.5) in the shuttle hurdle relay. Those were the 2nd and 3rd fastest times in New York State.

The Roosevelt's boy's Texas Sprint Medley of James McLenic, Brian Brown, Erin Parker and Dale McDonald (100-100-200- 400) ran 1:36.5, the 2nd fastest time in NY state and the fastest on Long Island.

McDonald also dominated the 100 (10.6) and 200 (21.7).

Massapequa won the boy's (Rob Brower 12-6) and girl's (Kerri Dutton 10-0) pole vault.

Check back later for a full listing of results.
