This year’s first place team was Austin’s The Bourgeoise!!!  The Bourgeoise brought home the CitySolve gold! Better watch out for them next year, they’ll be back to hold their title!

We really enjoyed working with Austin Pets Alive this year!  Austin Pets Alive’s mission is focused on helping the healthy and treatable pets at risk of being killed in a shelter.  They rescue dogs and cats who are at the greatest risk, providing them care within our shelter or with one of our hundreds of foster families, and adopting them out. Whether they are a 3-day old unweaned kitten; a 1 year old puppy with ring worm; or a 14 year old cat with FELV, they have a program and staff to help find them a place to call home. With a focused mission to focus solely on the pets who have been passed over by other groups and adoption programs, their impact is vast.

We were happy to work with Team in Training this year! Team In Training participants have raised over $1.3 billion for life saving cancer research therapies that are saving lives today.  Only The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training has trained over a half a million runners, walkers, triathletes, and cyclists; they also provide 4-5 months training with certified coaches; and more than 200 exciting endurance events to choose from.

This article will list 8 fun things to try when you are in Florida.

#1 – Visit Orlando’s theme parks
Orlando, Florida is theme park heaven. The city is home to more than a dozen theme parks, many of which are considered to be the best in the world.

You can spend a day exploring the world of Disney, or take a trip to the world of Universal, or visit Orlando’s world famous Gator Park or one of the city’s many wet and wild water parks. The choice is yours.

#2 – Indulge in the decadence of South Beach, Miami
South Beach, Miami, has earned a reputation for being a place of decadence and naughty indulgence. It certainly lives up to this reputation.

Walking along the beach, you’ll rub shoulders with celebrities and models while passing designer shops, cafes, clubs, bars, and beer gardens. You can also find a spot on the beach to enjoy some sunbathing or head into the seas to find some surf. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore South Beach’s famous ‘World Erotic Art Museum’.

Whatever your interests, you’ll never struggle to find interesting things to do and see at South Beach.

#3 – Visit Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa
Lowry Park Zoo, recent recipient of Child Magazine’s “best zoo in America” award, is arguably the best zoo in Florida and one of the best in the world.

The zoo is separated into a number of different enclosures with different types of animals inside. Lorikeet Landing, a bird sanctuary filled with all manners of tropical birdlife, the Florida Manatee and Aquatic Center, an aquatic center containing manatees, dolphins, and other aquatic life, and the Chimp and Orangutan Center are particular standouts.

Lowry Park Zoo is a must visit for animal lovers.

#4 – Swim with dolphins in Islamorada
Dolphins are incredibly intelligent and fascinating creatures. They’re also very playful and friendly and a joy to be around.

Swimming with dolphins is a magical experience that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetimes. At the ‘Theater of the Sea’ at Islamorada, you’ll be able to spend time swimming with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, southern stingrays, sea lions, and more. The marine park also runs regular shows throughout the day with dolphins, sea lions, and other aquatic creatures performing tricks with their handlers.

The ‘Theater of the Sea’ is a must visit for lovers of aquatic creatures.

#5 – Party in Miami
Will Smith, in his song ‘Miami’, said that Miami was one of the best places to party in the world, and he wasn’t wrong.

Miami’s nightlife is legendary worldwide with some of the finest clubs and bars around. With dozens of nightclubs and bars, it’s not difficult to find an exciting party in Miami.

Street celebrations and festivals are common in Miami, too. At these, Florida locals take to the streets to sing and dance in lavish, colourful costumes as loud music is blasted through the air. Do your best to visit one of these celebrations, if you can. You won’t regret it.

#6 – Visit the World Golf Hall of Fame
While the sport of golf may call Scotland its birthplace, its heart is firmly in Florida.

The World Golf Hall of Fame can be found in the centre of the World Golf Village, a massive 6,500 acre resort dedicated to the sport. Opened in 1998, the Wolf Golf Hall of Fame is an interactive museum that tells the history of the sport and its most famous players through a number of interactive exhibitions. A massive Imax cinema screen can be found here, too, with 3d golf movies playing daily.

The World Golf Hall of Fame is a must visit for fans of golf.

#7- Take a cruise in the Florida seas
Day cruises, weekend cruises, and holiday cruises can be booked from a number of ports throughout Florida. These cruises sail the Florida seas while stopping at scenic towns and interesting landmarks along the way.

Casino cruises, themed cruises, dinner cruises, and more can also be booked, too, allowing for a slightly different take on the cruise experience.

#8 – Take a stroll through one of Florida’s many gardens
Florida’s gardens are known for their beauty and serenity. They’re the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll before finding a spot on the grass to enjoy a picnic.

Arguably the three best gardens in Florida are the McKee Botanical Gardens, the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, and the Naples Botanical Gardens. All three have a relaxing atmosphere and a tremendous number of beautiful plants to see.

Florida is full of interesting and exciting places to visit and fun things to do. Make sure to try some of the activities listed above to make the most of your next trip to Florida.

Thank you to Louisiana Running Company hosting our packet pickup and prizes. Louisiana Running Company provides free run groups every Monday and Wednesdays LEAVING at 6:30 PM from the store (4153 Canal St.).  There is anywhere from 35-80 runners that show each week with paces varying anywhere from 7mins to 10+ including some of the top locals down to walkers and trickling packs in between!

Take two…the championship race kicked off at Fado with a nod to Joey Chestnut and Kobayashi.

Teams had to eat an entire Cuban sandwich complete with fries BEFORE getting their clues.Team Zack Attack from Boston was the first team out virtually swallowing the entire plate. Teams quickly licked their plates, received their clues and surprisingly no one vomited! Thank heavens.

This course covered a much larger area; Teams could not simply run this without taking Miami’s MetroMover. Teams had fun racing from downtown Miami to Coral Gables. They ate their way through the 305 tasting amazing treats from Shake Shack and red velvet cupcakes for Misha’s. Teams made their way through what looked like a petting zoo making balloon animals (doggies to be exact) and playing the ever-popular children’s game A Barrel Full of Monkeys (sponsored by Zico Coconut Water). And raised money for Miami’s Empowered Youth!

Miami’s very first, 1st place team was “Running With Scissors”!!!  They showed the competition who’s boss, and took home some major $$.  Just goes to show that all those times your parents told you not to run with scissors was…well only partially true.  Check out this video to see what they had to say.
