So your ads are on display, but in what position and are you paying too much per click ?

I should make it clear that the following pay per click strategy is my own and I follow it every day. It works for me but I cannot say for certain that it will work for you in your market or that other strategies promoted by other marketers are not as good or better.

To begin with I would have around 150 ad groups in my ppc campaign, there would be one keyword in every group in the three formats available. With two ads, you keep an eye on the ‘click through rate’ of them both so that you can replace the poorest performing one. Your keyword must be the headline of your ad and where it is more than twenty five characters long it will be substituted with a suitable phrase you have ready. I referred to the three versions of the keyword, these are “broad”, [exact] and broad - which has no embellishments.

My opening bid is 2% of the profit I will generate from a sale - what does that mean ? Lets take a situation where my profit on a sale is $30, two per cent of that is sixty cents - my first bid.

In your adwords account, locate and click on ‘edit campaign settings’. At the bottom of this page you have the option to chose the countries where you want your ad to appear. Switch off the ‘content’ option, put the ads on ‘rotate’ and set your daily budget. Only you can decide how much this will be but please remember to multiply the amount you choose by thirty and be certain that you can easily afford that per month.

For ads to appear ‘above the fold’ they need to be in positions 1 to 5 usually, but I advise you not to aim for the top two spots, you will pay less and still get plenty of clicks in 3rd, 4th and 5th place. The techniques I use to get my ads in the right positions and at the right cost will be the subject of my next article.

Here, rather than saying something physical about your store or product, you will explain what the product can do for the person. Writing Adsense content is tricky. Maybe you will write an article about your experience shopping for car insurance in Tampa, FL. There is a good chance of seeing a few clicks a month for people searching for car insurance in tampa fl. What else can you write about? a lot. Current news & trending topics is hot, reviews of pop culture, products, places, events there is a lot of topics you can cover. Just remember this formula traffic = popularity – competition. Finding a happy medium is probably the hardest part.

Information sells, and if you solve someone’s problem or provide an answer to a question you are far more likely to get a click out of the deal. Have you ever searched diligently only to not find exactly what you are looking for? Why not make it easier for the next searcher to find that information. How to guides are very popular and fun to write.

You might even want to write about your experience with a certain local company. Did they go out of their way to make you a valued customer? Then by all means the world needs to know, did they leave you hanging? Rant away!

After some time you will start to see what works and what does not. You will see how people find your blog organically. Reach out to other bloggers, befriend them, earn their attention. Complement others works, read other blogger’s articles, comment tastefully, pickup back links. Rinse, repeat.

Use Google Analytics, learn it well, it will tell you everything about your traffic. Who is sending what, organic, referral, direct traffic. How long the visitor is on site. It reported to me that someone reached my site searching for the keywords ‘naked twitter man’, on more than one occasion. Are you asking yourself the same question I thought? Who searches for that? Apparently a few people have.

In a rather short amount of time I have been getting hits to my blog based on some of these profitable keywords, all of them have been long tailed searches. Long tailed searches are highly targeted. Now I just have to optimize the Adsense Placements, and hope for the best.

Typically you would see %50 of the number given above credited to your Adsense account. There are ways to do this effectively, blogging and targeting keywords seems to be pretty popular, and not too difficult to understand. Well, I thought today is the time to give some Google Adsense tips. My Adsense earnings have literally doubled over the past 2 months, and even though it still doesn’t add up to all that much, I can actually see what is working and why now, and build up on that knowledge. I’m not surprised now that so many Newbie Internet Marketers give up on it because they want to see fast results, and they are just not getting them. How should anybody at the beginning know what it takes to be successful with Adsense?!?

Which topic/niche your website/webpage is centered around. This can determine whether you get cents or dollars per click - literally! As Google will display ads relevant to your sites or pages content, if you choose your niche or topic wisely, it will pay off. For example, if you are in a highly competitive niche like Internet Marketing (my blog here belongs to this category), the advertisers who’s ads are displayed on your site will usually have to pay a higher price for their advertising than advertisers in a much smaller niche, like gecko wall art (just using my sites as example) - all because of the higher competition. Of course it doesn’t mean that all the clicks you receive will always result in higher Adsense earnings, but in general these ads will make you more money than ads in less competitive niche markets.

What I like to do is go to Google’s External Keyword Tool and check some numbers; I type in keywords that are relevant to the niche I plan to build a website for, and then check the “Estimated Avg. CPC” number (estimated average cost per click; note it says estimated and average). Check the two examples; one is for the search term “beach decor”, and the other for “Adsense”. See the difference?? Mind you, Adsense is a bit out of the norm. But even niches with keywords getting even $2 or thereabouts for clicks can well be worth it! So needless to tell you that my beach decor site is usually making me a lot less per click than, for example, this blog you are reading.

Where your ads are placed. People do not have a lot of patience any more. When they arrive at your site they will quickly scan the content and then decide whether they stay or go. It has been proven that Adsense Advertising blocks that are placed above the fold (that’s what people can see on their computer before they start scrolling) are doing much better than the ones below. Simply because often people don’t even scroll down the page so the ads wouldn’t be visible. So place at least one ad unit above the fold. Also, try to blend the units within the content. A good way of doing this is to have an ad unit actually inside your main content. Research has shown that ad units that are only placed into the sidebar - for example, this is probably the most popular spot - do not attract much attention any more. So don’t make yor ad units stand out if you can, and they will look more “natural” and have a higher click-through-rate.

The amount of traffic you get to your site. Of course it makes a huge difference if your site gets 10 visitors a day or 1000 - the more visitors, the more chances that one or more of them will find something interesting in the ads displayed and click on them. So keep working on more traffic to your site, and on the optimization for the search engines.

Where's The Money? Adsense vs. Affiliate Programs

The main question I get from my clients when coaching them on building content sites is wether they should use Adsense or affiliate programs. It's a great question, and one that I haven't seen addressed often. Hopefully this information will help you in making your decision.

My rule of thumb is always go where the money is, but in making the decision to use Adsense or affiliate programs, there are a few things you should look at. Let's take a look at those things right now, so you know exactly what you should be putting on your site. Google Adsense or affiliate programs.

First, it will depend on your niche. If there is an affiliate program for your niche that converts well and pays well, then you should take the affiliate program route. I'm sure you would rather make dollars than you would cents, so using an affiliate program in this situation would be your best bet. However, if there isn't an affiliate program, using a pay-per-click service such as Google Adsense will at least allow you to earn a little money from your content site.

This leads to another question though. How do you tell if the affiliate program you are looking at is a good one or not?

The answer to that question will take some research, but will be well worth your time. The first thing to do is to contact the site owner or affiliate manager and ask what the average conversion rate is for the affiliate program. You could also ask if they have any affiliates that would be willing to email you their experiences with the product. Once you have the answer to that question, visit a few affiliate marketing forums and ask if anyone has promoted the program before or if they have any experience with the owner or affiliate manager of the site. Usually if it's a bad program, many people will tell you about it.

Now, if you don't find any affiliate programs for your niche, then I would use Google Adsense or any of the other programs like it. Always check though to make sure you can't make more money from something else. You don't want to be making pennies on a site you could be making dollars from. Most of the time Google Adsense just pays pennies per click. So if you got 100 clicks on your Adsense ad, and made say $5, but you got 100 clicks on an affiliate link and made $50, wouldn't it make more send to use the affiliate link on your site?

Using this as a guide will help you, but you still must test and track what works best for your site. You could put Adsense ads on your site for a few weeks, and then replace them with affiliate links for a few weeks. See what does better, and use the one that makes you more money. Just remember to keep testing and tracking!

Adsense, Boost Your Payout 400% No Really

Dead easy.

I implemented this tactic myself recently on one of my sites and my CTR has gone up 300% and it hasn't been 24hrs yet. Needless to say I'll be spending sometime making changes to my Adsense ads across my network of sites.

What is it?
Sorry, can't resist a little intrigue.

It's very simple.

Using the Adsense Leaderboard banner 728 x 90 I added small images/photos above each ad at 140 x 100.

These photos are broadly related to the ads and draw the eye of the visitor to the ad. Which the ad alone maybe would not do. Once the eye is drawn your visitor will be much more likely to read the ad text below the image and in turn they'll be more inclined to click.

Google already knows of this tactic and I know a number of people have approached them via email before implementing the images. Obviously nobody wants their account suspended. The good news is Google are fine with it, for now at least. Although a few warnings have gone out with regard to animated images not being appropriate. So no Flash or animated gifs!

You can't fail to see it at the top of the page.

Now I hope this is new information to you. If so I know it's going to be damn useful. :) And most of all profitable!

The benefit of this over Google's own Adsense 'image ads' is that you choose the image for one and the basic text ad appeals for another. As I'm sure you are aware text ads work better than image ads. Combining them together in this way seems to work btter than either one of them would alone.

There's also a major boost in the fact that you are able to select the most relevant image for your site content and current adsense ads.
