Personal Reflections on Tecate Mission Trip

It has been a dream of mine for our family to serve in Tecate since my youngest graduated from diapers. For whatever the reasons, our plans had been thwarted for almost seven years. But finally, this May, we embarked on our first family mission trip. And so the Somers set forth to bless others in Tecate. Being of the “Type A” personality, I was expecting a “play by play” or list of the things we would accomplish. By God’s humor, He sent all of us in different directions without a clear plan. My husband and son were to help construct one of the two homes; my daughter was to play with the orphans and participate in VBS; and I would pack lunches for the workers off-site and help prep the meal at the orphanage. Coming together at the end of each day, we were able to recount events that had been Spirit led. We were able to describe the physical strength that was given to be able to finish construction. God provided “bridges” in the form of smiles or hugs where there was a language barrier. Cuts, scrapes, bruises, blisters, bites and allergies were forgotten. The laughter that replenished these orphaned children filled us with joy. The simple ability to step back and process our gratitude allowed us to decide how we want to go forward as a family. How can we serve Him everyday? God carried us through this mission. And as we set out to bless others, little did we know that we were truly the recipients of His blessing.

Tecate Trip Recap

A group of over 90 people of all generations from St. Andrew’s joined forces to build two homes in Tecate, Mexico this past weekend. In addition to the two house builds we also did two full days of games and crafts with the orphans from Rancho San Juan Bosco, built a vegetable garden at one of the homes we build last year, did some fix it projects in past homes we have built, gave away clothes, shoes, and toys in the El Mirador community, cooked dinner for the orphans, and visited the homes of some of our friends from El Mirador. At night, our team spent time in Bible study, worship, and small group discussion.

Rummage Sale Recap

The 51st annual Rummage Sale was a huge success, thanks to the countless numbers of volunteers who put their time and energy into it. Hundreds of people stepped foot on our campus to see what they could find and many went home with treasures! With the help from many purchases, St. Andrew’s was able to raise over $64,000 for local and global missions. What a blessing!

Vietnam Team prepares for trip by assembling wheelchairs

The Vietnam team had their meeting at Free Wheelchair Mission’s headquarters this past weekend, where they had the opportunity to practice assembling the wheelchairs that they will be distributing throughout southern Vietnam. The team bonded as they learned the process of both assembling the wheelchairs and presenting them to individuals who need them. Please join us in praying for the team as the prepare to embark on this amazing journey where they have the opportunity to bless others with a tangible gift that illustrates the immeasurable love of Christ. The team will be in Vietnam from June 28 – July 8, 2012.

A Prayer Written for our Rummage Sale Volunteers

The following is a prayer, written by Bryan Eckelmann, to bless the meal during the Rummage Sale preparations.

“Gracious heavenly Father. Redeemer of the rubbish. Savior of the scrappings. Deliverer of the debris. King of the cast-offs. And lord of the lost… and found…

Thank you for this litter-loving legion of volunteers. Thank you for their dedication to divesting and their passion for purging, knowing that these sacrifices of scrappings will advance your kingdom and support the missions of this church. We ask your blessing on each person who will give up their time – or their treasure, or their trash – this week. And we pray for the missions that will be furthered by this rummage sale. This week especially, we are reminded of your love for the tossed-out, the cast-off, and the flung-aside. Give us this same heart for the rejected.

And finally Lord, bless the food, and may its nourishment ready us for rummaging, in your holy name and for your kingdom, Amen.”

Get ready! The Rummage Sale begins this Thursday, and the campus is full of excitement as volunteers help sort, organize, and tag all the items for sale. You won’t want to miss this sale! There are lots of great deals!

Thursday, May 17, 2:00-8:00 p.m. Preview Sale: $3.00 donation at the door
Friday, May 18, 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m.
Saturday, May 19, 8:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Half-price day

Proceeds of the Rummage Sale will go to local outreach and global missions.

Hundreds of Men and Women Gather to Worship

Richard Kannwischer and Brandon Muchow had the privilege of being a part of Day 1 of Teen Challenge’s Spiritual Emphasis Retreat on Monday. Brandon and the band led hundreds of men and women in a powerful time of worship. Richard gave a wonderful message that sparked reflection in the hearts of all who attended. Parenting Tools

This Friday evening, May 11, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. the St. Andrew’s Tuition Ministry invites you to a dessert fellowship time at St. Andrew’s where I will be speaking and leading a round table discussion on the topic of “Parenting Tools to give your kids (and grandkids!) a “sticky” faith.” The talk will incorporate much of the theme of my new book: Kingdom Family: Re-Envisioning God’s Plan for Marriage and Family.

This event is open to young parents, grandparents, or “faith” parents who care about giving our church’s children and youth a faith that will stick with them as they head out into the world.

Free for adults/ childcare $10 per child (a childcare punch card must be purchased from the Front Office or from Diane Johansen in the pre-school office. Also, childcare reservations must be made by today, Wednesday May 9, by calling childcare hotline 949.574.2239.
