Scott over at Mapsadasical dropped a glowing review of Ghost Frequencies this week, as folows.

“I’ve featured some solo HPLL grade Erstlaub on here before, and am pleased to find that this new release for Moving Furniture is hewn from the same dark gritty stone as I Am The Line Drawn In The Sand Between The Living And The Dead. The opening is pure Psycho, window wipers beating a lashing rain off the windscreen, while an ominous whine builds in the background. Just as a storm warning is issued, I think I hear some rumbling bass and tolling bells appear from amidst thick clouds of crackling static. Or do I? Erstlaub sought inspiration from the Gantzfeld Procedure whereby “where the participant is deprived of visual stimulus and bombarded with white/pink noise drawing the mind to form patterns in the chaos often hearing voices from the past or inventing entirely new constructs within their consciousness”. It reminds me of that other album of ghost frequencies I’ve been listening to of late, William Fowler Collins’s Perdition Hill Radio. Too soon, with a screech the dial is pulled off the set, leaving the listener trapped amongst pulsating drones and whining feedback, before it fades to an eerie near-silence. Apparently recorded in one take, this is another demonstration of Erstlaub’s growing, glowering greatness. It is available now from Moving Furniture – go there for a full stream too.”

The full article also features The Village Ochestra’s – I can hear the Sirens Singing which is the first of all the coverage to acknowledge the rest of the folks involved which is nice.

Cheers Scott.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Dani Baquet-Long of Celer at just 26. Celer made some of the most beautiful music I have come across in years.

“Lord Naoshige once said, “There is nothing felt quite so deeply as giri. There are times when someone like a cousin dies and it is not a matter of shedding tears. But we may hear of someone who lived fifty or a hundred years ago, of whom we know nothing and who has no family ties with us whatsoever, and yet from a sense giri shed tears.”

Sad day indeed, my thoughts go out to everyone affected.

“I Can Hear the Sirens Again is one of the year’s most distinct and measured albums, and although its peaks are very clear and the context to them isn’t always memorable, it’s more replayable than most records of this ilk, and shouldn’t slip through the cracks like a lot of modern ambient can. “

Live: The Village Orchestra (TVO, Stuffrecords, HPLL, Numbers)
Nanorhythm (Soliton Research – Debut Live Set)

DJs: Goodhand (Stuffrecords, Numbers), Mark Solo, Langer

Saturday July 18th
Concrete Bar,
Hayward Gallery, South Bank,
London, SE1 8XX
8pm – 1am / Free Entry

Now into its fourth year, The ill-ec-tro-nic has a well established placed within the blogosphere, having built a reputation on helping to showcase the diversity to be found in electronic music and being just as keen on promoting music from little known artists as from some of the scene’s more established names.

On Saturday July 18th, ‘ill-ec-tro-nic Presents’ will deliver a night of varied electronics to London’s Southbank with sounds ranging from atmospheric electronica through techno, house, dubstep and the thriving UKF scene whilst maintaining the strong techno undercurrent that’s never far from the top of The ill-ec-tro-nic’s agenda.

The Village Orchestra plays live and as anyone familiar with his work will know, TVO has an arsenal of electronic weapons in his machines ranging from cerebral armchair electronica through to dancefloor bombs whilst always exhibiting an air of playful experimentation. With a new album just released on Highpoint Lowlife and still riding the wave of the critical acclaim he received for his The Dark is Rising EP on Stuffrecords earlier in the year, this rare London appearance for the talented producer is expected to be as varied as it is entertaining.

Via his alter-ego, RAW, Nanorhythm will already be known to The ill-ec-tro-nic readership and while a small number of his productions have been exposed to the world via the blog and through the Soliton Research netlabel (of sorts) that he co-runs, this is Nanorhythm’s debut live set. He’d been working on a host of new productions and is looking forward to unleashing his brand of dub-infused techno minimalism on the crowd.

DJs for the night will be delivering a three-pronged attack in the form of Stuffrecords / Numbers DJ Goodhand whose sure to be bringing the funk with his glitched-up party tunes, ill-ec-tro-nic founder Langer who’ll be spinning his latest ‘dubtec’ faves and ill-ec-tro-nic’s Café 1001 regular Mark Solo who’ll be dropping techno and house bombs in his uniquely animated style.

Hello,
Just back from Augsburg in Germany where I was playing over two nights at a sort of private party for a friends 50th. Dustep djing on the friday which although very quiet ended up pretty raucous, good to meet Geroyche who i’ve been a fan of since his old breakcore days and a good set from me – possibly uploaded later if the recording survived. Live techno on the Saturday alongside Finland’s Lackluster (a really good set from him) and quite a few other things. My set didnt quite go as hoped – I was trying out a new setup and it had mixed results. Good practice for the London gig (above) though.

Thought I’d take this opportunity to big up what I use live…control comes from a Korg Nanokontrol and a Novation Remote Zero SL, plus an iphone running TouchOSC for wireless touch control (very highly recommended) and Ms Pinky for vinyl control of loops and acapellas etc. Software wise its all about Audiomulch 2.0, newly updated and still one of my favourite programs ever.

Frans De Waard over at Vital Weekly had this to say about Ghost Frequencies.

“ERSTLAUB – BROADCASTING ON GHOST FREQUENCIES (CDR by Moving Furniture Records)

Back in Vital Weekly 601 we first heard the music of Erstlaub, also known as Dave Fyans from Perth, Scotland. On ‘On Becoming An Island’ Fyans composed everything live, without processing or multitracking using a Nord G2 synthesizer. I don’t know if that’s the case here too on ‘Broadcasting On Ghost Frequencies’ but its again a single track, this time lasting almost forty-nine minutes. That’s not the only link to the previous release. This new work sees him continuing on the thematic approach of drone music.

A nightmare like soundscape. The sky tonight is covered with clouds, no moon, no stars. But the clouds drift on the howl of wind. One can barely see a thing – no street lights are on. Apparently Fyans is inspired here by the Ganzfeld Procedure ‘where the participant is deprived of visual stumulus and bombarded with white/pink noise drawing the mind to form patterns in the chaos often hearing voices from the past or inventing entirely new constructs within their consciousness’. I hear voices too, but they are real: they come from the outside. No clouds, just lots of sunshine. This might be the wrong moment to hear this? It works well, except that its not chaotic at all. Its a beautiful piece of drone music. Nothing new under the pitch black sky, done however with great care. (FdW)
