Shoelaces, blisters not a problem for barefoot runner

Todd Byers didn't have to worry about his shoes coming unlaced May 2 (2010) at the Frederick Marathon. The Long Beach, Calif., runner ran the course barefoot, as he has run 84 other marathons since 2004.

Byers, 46, did not go barefoot as a result of Christopher McDougall's bestselling book "Born to Run," about a group of people in a remote section of Mexico who run hundreds of miles either barefoot or with simple sandals strapped to their feet.
He did not do it as a result of the wave of runners who are sampling what has become a running trend.
Rather, Byers has been running barefoot since 2004. He runs barefoot because a friend and fellow runner, Ken Thackston, suggested he try it. "I never had problems," Byers said. "I like it better, as opposed to having to do it."
Byers also likes running the Frederick Marathon. He's a running coach who grew up in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. His twin sister, Tina, suggested he do it a few years ago, and he found he liked it. "It's what I consider my hometown marathon," he said. "It's an excellent event, and I decided to keep coming back."
Byers runs one or two marathons a month. Among his 266 marathons are marathons run in the three-hour range, but he mostly prefers to enjoy his marathons. He ran the Frederick Marathon in six hours. "Frederick is a very beautiful course," he said. "I even heard other people comment on that."
Byers approaches barefoot running with the same laid-back attitude. "I like it better," he said. "It's a choice, because I think it's better for me."
He says it's more important for runners to focus on their form. "I teach people how to run properly," he said. "Once you have the basics, if you choose to wear shoes, it's up to you."
Byers encourages a style of running similar to chi running (pronounced chee). "I've worked with Danny Dreyer," he said, referring to the author of "Chi Running," which suggests runners use their stronger core muscles to do most of the work in running.
"It is a method of pose running," he said. "It's all about trying to run based on how your body was designed."
The body may have been designed to run using the core, but it's not intuitive, he said. "You're designed for it, but you just have to use the tools."
Running barefoot doesn't mean you'll immediately get the right form, he said. "Using proper form with or without shoes is what makes it less tiring," he said. He advocates a pelvic tilt forward, along with a gravitational lean, similar to that in chi running.
"One of my pet peeves is hearing scuffing late in a marathon," he said. That can happen whether a runner is barefoot or not, only the barefoot runner will feel it a little more. Still, that late-race shuffle happens because a runner is not using his or her core, and is letting the legs and feet drag.
For those who want to learn how to run without shoes, Byers said it takes a change in attitude. "You have immediate feedback," he said. Barefoot runners do not keep their feet on the ground long enough to feel stones, glass or other impediments. "If you scuff your foot running, you have immediate feedback," he said. "You know you did something wrong. I move quickly to avoid any sort of injury." Yoga is usually done without shoes, and that's to properly balance the body, he said.
Byers also does trail running without shoes. But in Hawaii, where he volunteered at the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, he did not go shoeless across the lava fields. "We all have our limitations," he said. "I'm not out to prove a point. Shoes are tools."
His feet are not like leather. "You start to become more sensitive," he said. "You also learn to touch the ground lightly."
Socks and minimalist shoes, including the new Vibram Five Fingers that are selling rapidly, are like security blankets, he said. That's not a bad thing, he added.
"What's the first thing you do at the end of a marathon?" he asked. Take your shoes off, he is often told. "Even my feet will be tender at the end of a marathon. What I don't have is blisters." There's nothing for his feet to rub against.
He runs barefoot through California winters and has run barefoot in snow, but not in extreme cold. He said feet eventually warm up.
Barefoot running means no callouses. Runners who run in shoes should be proud of their callouses, but without shoes to rub against, the callouses disappear.
Byers said his feet are tough, but not rough. Even at airports, Byers said his feet are noticed. "I've had the TSA people say you have good looking feet," he said with a laugh.
In barefoot-friendly Southern California, he doesn't wear shoes often. If shoes are required, he'll wear them. "I try and respect the custom," he said. "In other cultures, it's a sign of respect to take your shoes off."
Byers plans to return to Frederick next year. In addition to his twin sister, he brings other friends who run the 5K and the half-marathon. "It's an excellent, well-run event," he said.

The roses along the stone wall in front of Highspire continue to look fabulous as the first real heat of summer begins! Miss Lua is certainly keeping a wary eye on something -- what could it be??

Ah yes ... The Streetscape construction in front of Highspire (at least the Department of Highways portion of it) is now underway in earnest. DOH is moving drainage grates, installing the "on street" side of the curbs and repaving once the curbs are in place. Here DOH has replaced a pipe across Wilkes Street at the corner of Independence Street. I'm saving lots of money on alarm clock batteries since the DOH jackhammers start promptly each morning at 7:15 am.

Animal Transport - Huntington WV to Hagerstown MD

What more appropriate way to celebrate West Virginia's Birthday than by driving the whole way across West Virginia and back in one day!

Today I left Berkeley Springs (in the Eastern Panhandle) in the early morning to drive a Special Medical Transport from Huntington, West Virginia (on the western side of WV at the Kentucky & Ohio border) back east to Hagerstown, Maryland.

My passenger is a quadriplegic Yorkie puppy named "Gizzmoe". He is 7 months old and was paralyzed by spinal injury suffered after jumping off a bed. Gizzmoe weighs less than 4 pounds and is a very sick fellow; however, despite his serious condition, Gizzmoe gave me some kisses!! Gizzmoe will be hospitalized in Pennsylvania to see if the doctors can help him. If Gizzmoe's condition can be stablized and he can have a good quality of life, I will adopt Gizzmoe and he will join the Yorkies of Highspire!

After I transferred Gizzmoe to his hospital driver and I was preparing to leave, another northbound dog transport pulled into the parking lot. That driver recognized me from other transports and we ended up walking her dogs together before they continued northward to their overnight. This coonhound puppy is headed to Rescue in New England!

Today Gabby, Liah, Muffin (at left) and I drove to New Jersey to attend a "PupLuck Picnic" for Rescue Me! Yorkie Rescue! The invitees included folks who have adopted Yorkies from Rescue Me! and their Yorkies (of course!) Approximately 70 people and 90 Yorkies were in attendance! The furkids were exhausted from all the excitement of the day and slept the entire ride home.

A Stuffing Party!

Today Miss Paras (age 19 1/2 - on left), Muffin (age 18 - on right) and I (almost 46) traveled to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania for a "Stuffing Party" to benefit Rescue Me! Yorkie Rescue. Lots of rescue volunteers come to these events several times a year to stuff empty dog beds with fiberfill so the finished beds can be sold at dog shows for fundraising. The Rescue spends the money raised for medical care for the pups prior to their adoption. Muffin and Miss Paras were Sweet and Gorgeous and quite adored by one and all! Its neat to think that together Miss Paras and Muffin totaled only 4.9 pounds, but comprised 37 1/2 years of Yorkie!

Toddy's 250th Marathon!!

Today Toddy ran his 250th Marathon in Frederick, Maryland! As you can see, he ran barefoot!

I made a little sign (on the right) for Toddy to wear to let other runners to know today is a special event! The race organizers even gave Toddy the number "250" to wear for his special day!

It poured rain for most of the day -- but Toddy did Great, pacing in a group of half-marathon runners and finishing his full marathon in 4:47:48. See his exciting finish below!

As a founding member of "Team Toddy", it is always terrific fun for me to cheer on all the runners from the sidelines!

After Toddy ran the Apple Blossom 10K in Winchester, Virginia this morning; we drove to Frederick, Maryland to continue Toddy's marathon "warm up" with a 5K in Frederick, Maryland! When Toddy approached the Finish Line, I was surprised to see another Barefoot Runner in the race!

This morning Miss Paras and I attended the "Mutt Strutt" - a fundraiser for the benefit of the Humane Society of Morgan County (West Virginia), held at Cacapon State Park.

In addition to participating in a short walk, Miss Paras and I won two contests! Smallest Dog (2.4 pounds) and Doggy/Owner Lookalike! ( I knew my white hair would come in handy someday!) Miss Paras won a dog bed -- which is a good prize because Miss Paras does enjoy her beauty sleep these days. They didn't have a contest for "Oldest Dog" because she would have "run off" with that category too! :)

Sad News - Arnold

This evening Arnold, my 13 year old Special Needs Yorkie, died from complications of congestive heart failure. Arnold was only given 2 to 4 months to live when he came to live at Highspire (see December 18, 2007 blog entry), but he survived 16 months...and all of it Quality Time. This is my favorite photo of "Arnie" (as he was affectionately known) taken at his 13th Birthday Party. Arnie let me tie his "Bow Hat" around his head -- and he wore it all evening! Arnie had an excellent sense of humor. He looked so handsome in his blue sweater. I Love You, Arnie and I'll miss you always.

Today Beautiful Miss Paras joined me at the Chantilly (Virginia) Pet Expo! Many visitors and exhibitors greeted Miss Paras by name and welcomed her return! Miss Paras is hard to forget -- its not everyday that folks meet a 19 1/2 year old Yorkie -- especially one as Fabulous as Miss Paras! :)

Courthouse - Workman's Accident

The whole back of the Courthouse is framed now in steel and both three-story elevator shafts are joined by the beams. The structure is attached to the downhill side of the old Post Office and each day the outline of the new Courthouse creeps closer to Washington Street. On the far left, a fireproof stairwell (surrounded by scaffolding) is being poured in place. This stairwell sits on what used to be part of the alleyway behind the Sheriff's Office. Earlier this morning, a workman was injured in a fall and was taken away by ambulance for treatment.

Sad News - Skooter

Last week, an 11 year old Yorkie, Skooter, was surrendered to Rescue. During his whole lifetime, Skooter had never been to a vet. After years of neglect, Skooter developed end-stage congestive heart failure and now had very little time to live. I adopted Skooter yesterday evening and brought him home to Highspire. Skooter was comfortable, fed, warm and thoroughly loved every minute until he passed away in my arms at 4:45AM today.

Little Skooter had dashing good looks and a sweet, gentle temperament. All of the Rescue folks who worked with Skooter were touched by his soft expressions of genuine appreciation for the care he received. We are so glad Skooter entered our lives, if only for a little while.

Rick travels the world performing with Jilli, "The World's Only Poker Playing Dog", and with Jilli's brother, Spidey Chihuahua, a multifaceted star-in-training possessing incredible doggy basketball skills. Courthouse - Steel Skeleton

The Courthouse's steel skeleton continues to rise between the front (right) and rear (left) elevator shafts. Today's temperatures in the upper 20s coupled with gusty 25-35 mph winds are making conditions challenging for the workers. Despite the weather, the steelworkers are showing excellent humor and usually wave when they see folks taking photos!

An adorable Japanese Chin named "Tiki" was my "Sweet Valentine" today on the transport! Tiki is headed from North Carolina to Rescue in Washington, PA. He has already been adopted and Tiki will be in his new Forever Home by next weekend! Despite the heavy winter weather late in the day, Tiki was a gentle and wonderful passenger who either munched biscuits or napped most of the way.

All Paws On Deck!

Today Liah and I enjoyed a rare 72 degree day in February with a trip to the boat. Liah quickly hopped up on the deck and took the First Watch.
After lunch, it was time for Liah to get inside the Captain's coat and out of the winds from the approaching storm.

At the end of the day, Liah guarded the dock cart while her Captain battened down the hatches. After such hard work, Liah slept the whole way home!

This morning I transported two fabulous dogs who originated in Tucker County, West Virginia. Diamond, an 80 lb. Yellow Lab (left), has a new Forever Home waiting for her in Rhode Island. Sue, a 30 lb. Treeing Walker Coonhound (below), is headed to Rescue in Pennsylvania. I drove their second leg from Romney WV to Winchester VA. The blowing snow showers and bitter winds did not dampen their spirits in the least! Both Diamond and Sue were quite affectionate and very excited to be on the transport headed to the next stage of their lives!

On my way to the grocery store this morning, my car thermometer read -4 degrees! I tried to get a photo, but my reflexes were too frozen! So I had to settle for a picture of "only" -3 degrees !!

Later my terrific friends, Stephi and David, visited Highspire. Since the weather was still absolutely frigid, we stayed inside all day and played with the Yorkies! Here Stephi and David meet Gabby for the first time!

Bowser, a Boxer/Bulldog mix (on left), and Webb, a Boxer (below), were my passengers from Hagerstown MD to New Cumberland PA. The day was fairly brisk, but still bright and beautiful to welcome these two great guys to Freedom!

C.C.'s Christmas Tree

In loving memory of my beloved Yorkie, C.C., who passed away in June, my Christmas tree theme this year is "C.C. - The Yorkie Princess of Highspire". My tree is draped in glowing pink and ivory beads, lace snowflakes and several Victorian dolls. Hiding deep in the branches, Yorkie figurines peek from behind translucent cream and gold ornaments. On top of the tree (right), a sparkling full-size tiara rests on the pink, silver and rose ribbon spray that C.C. wore at her last birthday party on January 13, 2008.

I'm thinking of you this Christmas, C.C., and missing you always.

Today is the first anniversary of Arnold's arrival at Highspire! Then he was 12 years old, had been surrendered to Rescue and was anticipated to live only 2 to 4 months because of advanced congestive heart failure. Since I don't know Arnold's exact birthdate -- and a whole year has gone by -- I've declared today to be Arnold's "official" 13th birthday! Thanks to great medicine and vetting, Arnold is feeling good, relishes his walks and cuddle time and enjoys being Big Brother to his Yorkie pals at Highspire...and Arnold is obviously quite the (Birthday) Party Animal!!

Gabby's Cleft Palate Exam

Last week Gabby underwent her fourth surgery since late July to correct her multiple birth defects. This surgery was the third to specifically address her cleft palate. Unfortunately this last repair has collapsed. Today Gabby and I went to the doctor to see what is the extent of the damage and to determine the future course of treatment. Below is my video of Gabby's exam...not tooo graphic, and it is very interesting for Dog Lovers who are interested in cleft palates.

Today is Gabby's (the Baby Yorkie) first day home following her fourth operation to address birth defects. Gabby is taking it easy during recovery, but still joined me and the rest of the Critters of Highspire for turkey!

Afternoon sunshine and temperatures in the mid-40s made the Garden pleasant for strolling. I planted this holly (above) in May near the Stone Pool and its berries add a striking new dash of winter color to Highspire!

This tiny beautiful eight week old Yorkie is "Daisey Mae"! Weighing only 0.8 pounds, Daisey Mae was surrendered to Rescue Me! Yorkie Rescue because she was critically ill with suspected liver shunt. Daisey Mae came from Huntington WV and I transported her last night from Cumberland MD to the hospital at Gaithersburg MD. Sadly, despite the hospital's best efforts, Daisey Mae's condition never stabilized and she died at 5:00 AM. Daisey Mae -- Your passing is sad beyond compare, but I'll never forget the joy of meeting you and being a small part of your chance at life.

This gorgeous yellow maple is located beside the driveway at Highspire. I'll always think of it as "C.C.'s Tree" because I took her picture under this tree every Fall. Below is C.C. under her tree in Fall 1999.

In the North Bed, the red maple (left) and the Yoshino Cherry (yellow leaves on right) are thriving and showing off their best fall splendor! I hauled each of them from Virginia to Highspire ten years ago in the back of my Jeep!

Toddy ran the Marine Corps Marathon today in Washington DC. It was a sunny, beautiful day in the mid-70s.

Toddy had lots of support along the way -- Jack Quarantillo and his dog, Winnie, came to DC and cheered Todd at Mile 25.

So....the warm weather had to end sometime, and last night was It! Our overnight low dropped to 26 degrees. It was the usual last minute scramble to get the tropicals inside before sunset. While I was outside, I took a moment to say Goodbye to all of my tender plants that bloomed so beautifully in season and deep into this unusally warm Fall. This morning a thick dusting of frost was evident and the tender perennials are finished for the season. They did their job brilliantly and deserve their Rest now...I'll miss them, but I'll see them in the Spring!

The fall-blooming pink stonecrop sedum (closeup on right) makes an unusual pairing with the irises -- but the combination is gorgeous!

"Gabby Baby Bear" is Home!

Gabby came home this evening from her third major operation in less than two months to address multiple birth defects. Although her physical issues are not fully resolved, Gabby is recovering well from her surgeries and is expected to have a long and happy life! Before we left the hospital, the kind staff dressed Gabby in this little bear outfit for pictures. The staff adores Gabby and she looks unbelievably precious!

No matter what the status of her physical issues and the final outcome of her surgeries, I am adopting Gabby as my Own and I look forward to Loving her for the rest of her Life!
