Android is on a rampage since its launch. The last thing it needs is a port like Alien Dalvik which lets other phones to run Android apps. This might not be a success story for Android but for its apps. Mobile app developers who are facing a dilemma of which platform to develop can breath easy now. Just develop it for Android and the rest will be taken care of by Alien Dalvik. In a perfect world that is.

Myriad will be releasing Dalvik for Meego to start with followed by support for other platforms. If you want to run the native native Android Google apps map to get the Gmail Priority Inbox on your iPhone, then you might have to wait. I am not sure how this will work out, but if Myriad is planning of an app for doing this, then Apple will reject it with impunity.

Square System Allows Mobile Devices To Make Credit Card Payment

There’s no debating that credit and debit cards are convenient, but typically the only places that you can use them are in businesses, or via the phone or internet. In 2009 the co-founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, set out to change that. He released a beta version of Square, a system that allowed mobile devices to receive card payments. A small card reader plugged into the device’s headphone port, and an app handled all the 1s and 0s. Two years later, Square is out of its debugging phase and available for general use.

The card reader is sent to users free of charge, and there are reportedly no activation, gateway, monthly, early termination or hidden fees, nor is a contract required to use the service. What there are are transaction fees – 2.75 percent + 15 cents for swiped transactions, and 3.5 percent + 15 cents for keyed-in transactions. These fees stay the same regardless of the amount of transaction, and are taken off as the transaction occurs, so no fee schedule is involved. The user pays nothing at all if they don’t use the service.

There is no limit on transaction amounts, and funds are automatically transferred into the user’s bank account after a 24-hour period. The system can also make refunds to buyers.

While Square accepts all major credit cards, the company does have a policy regarding what sort of products it will allow its service to be used to sell. The website states, “Our banks and the payment card networks have also determined that certain transactions, while legal, present high risk exposure to Square, our merchants and their customers,” adding that funds may be withheld from users caught violating that policy. The list of unacceptable transactions includes understandable things like illegal activity, drug paraphernalia and hate products, but also includes greyer areas such as raffles, adult entertainment and occult materials.

Square is compatible with iDevices and Android, but can currently only be used for purchases made within the United States.

A 103-year-old grandmother is believed to be the world's oldest Facebook user. Lillian Lowe, from Tenby in Pembrokeshire, regularly keeps her online friends updated about her life using her iPad, and being signed up to the social network also enables her to keep track of what her seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren are up to.

Mrs Lowe, who is just two months away from her 104th birthday, took the oldest Facebook user title following the death of 104-year-old Ivy Bean in July. Despite some of the Facebook goings on that would shock many her age, Lillian says she isn't fazed by any of her grandchildren's "antics".
She said: "I have seen a few things over the years, so nothing really shocks me these days anyway."

Mrs Lowe, who logs on several times a week, uses her 47-year-old grandson Steve's iPad but is very keen to get her own. The retired hotelier and businesswoman says it's "just lovely" to be able to see all the latest photographs and messages from her large family. She said: "I can recommend it for any grandparents to keep in touch with their family without ringing all the time."

While saying her online habit is "exciting" the cyber centenarian also admitted that it can be a "dreadful waste of time".

She said: "I'm sure there are lots of other things I should be doing rather than playing on a computer."

OLLIE Christie got the phone call this weekend that every app creator dreams of getting.

OLLIE Christie, a developer who runs an applications and game design company near Oxford England, was surprised with an email on his phone over the weekend that read “Mr. Christie, I’m with Apple in Cupertino, Can you call me? I have some good news to share”. After returning the phone call, he was told that his “Paper Glider” app was the App Store’s 10 billionth download, which earned the downloader, another British resident, a $10,000 iTunes Gift card.

While the service was put in place in order to help Egyptians trying to tweet amidst the protests, it's unclear if this service will remain in place in the future.

Toshiba Presents The Ultimate Hard Drive

Toshiba today announced three new 1.8-inch hard drives. These are the industry’s first 1.8” drives with low-insertion force (LIF) SATA (Serial ATA) connectors, enabling a 10% smaller footprint compared to standard 1.8” drives using microSATA connectors.

These hard drives are developed for use in multiple devices, including tablets, consumer electronics devices and external HDDs, the new MKxx39GSL series offers three models, at 160GB (MK1639GSL), 200GB (MK2039GSL) and 220GB (MK2239GSL) capacities.

Features include 4200RPM spindle rate, 16MB buffer and 15ms average seek time.

The drives are capable of withstanding the demands of mobility usage, tolerating up to 1,500Gs of non-operational shock and 600Gs of operational shock, compared to 900G of non-operational shock and 400G of operational shock for the most robust 2.5-inch HDDs currently available.

What actually make this hard drive special is low power consumption, quiet operation and only 0.35-watts required to operate. It comes with 5- x 54- x 71mm size. Its official release date is February and the price is yet to be announced.

Gigabyte Technology has announced its new convertible tablet which is known earlier as a M1125 . This one's a unique machine, combining three functions into one, namely notebook, tablet and desktop PC.

The Gigabyte T1125 is a convertible tablet that has a rotative 11.6-inch touch screen with a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels.

The T1125 is the third-generation swivel 11.6-inch touch screen Booktop and the first of its kind in the industry that creatively combines the advantage of a tablet PC and docking technology. It features both a swivel touchscreen and a removable Super multi DVD.

It is powered by a choice of a Core i3 with Gigabyte’s “Smart Turbo” feature to ratchet speeds up to 1.77 GHz or a Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost of up to 1.86 GHz and comes with up to 8GB of RAM, a 320GB or 500GB HDD, and GeForce 310M graphics with Nvidia Optimus.

Toshiba has announced its new dynabook Qosmio D710 All-In-One Desktop PC onto the market.

Toshiba DynaBook Qosmio D710 is not a performance beast, but it has come with 2.13GHz Intel Pentium P6200 processor, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, DVD Writer, TV Tuner, support HDMI output, and loaded with Windows 7 OS.

The specs should be enough to run most office application and works with some games. But don’t expect you can play anything hardcore with Toshiba Dynabook Qosmio D710 All-in-One Desktop PC.

Apple Ipad 2 Is Coming Soon

Release date of Apple’s iPad 2 is gradually approaching nearer (there are even reports that the gadget may be announced by the end of January).

We know Apple is going to update its iPad with a new model sometime this year. Now word on internet has it Apple will unveil second generation iPad in April with some new, exciting features. The 2nd gen iPad tablet will be a thinner and sleeker tablet, with a new screen technology which is pretty similar to iPhone 4's Retina Display. The device will have a 10-inch "super high resolution" display.

The new iPad will also feature a dual GSM / CDMA chipset produced by Qualcomm.

Other features include front and rear facing camera, and a SD card slot.

Skype Video Chat in Facebook Instant Messaging

Recently Skype and Facebook announced a large integration, however that integration appeared to be limited to the Skype desktop application.

Back in September it was reported that “Facebook users will be able to video chat with each other.” While this is theoretically possible via Skype already, it wouldn’t be surprising if those calls could take place directly from within Facebook.

AllFacebook is reporting that a Facebook app developer has discovered the existence of code hinting at Skype integration.

Apparently, Facebook is bucket testing this feature, which will be based on the Skype SDK.

Tal Alter, the developer who was the first to notice this, wrote in his blog, “The object, which is simply called VideoChat, appears to have everything needed to introduce video chatting functionality.” It is expected that once launched, Skype users will be able to receive and initiate video calls directly from Facebook.

After all, Facebook’s new messaging system is an attempt to make communication more seamless and synchronized across multiple platforms. It may very well be that video chat will be added to the mix or that Facebook is at least considering a Skype integration.

iPhone 5 rumours are flying thick and fast already. Will there be a rush release to erase memories of the iPhone 4's antenna problems? Will the 5th generation iPhone deliver ultra-fast mobile internet? Will it ever end up on Verizon in the US?

Apple is expected to launch its next iPhone this summer, and new reports describe it as a "completely redesigned handset" as well as a "total rethink from a design standpoint."

To start, the iPhone 5's internals will be different - the device will run on a new, combined CDMA/GSM/UTMS chipset from Qualcomm, which will support both AT&T and Verizon in the U.S., as well as other carriers worldwide - perhaps even an expanded lineup, as would now be possible. Along with the iPad 2, this chipset change represents the transition away from Infineon as the iPhone and iPad chipset maker. Going forward, Qualcomm will make the chips for all Apple mobile devices.

The Apple company has acquired Swedish company, Polar Rose, known for its mobile face recognition technology FaceLib among other similar products.

If you're thinking about buying the iPhone 4, you'll be better off waiting for the iPhone 5 instead, as it should be coming out really soon this year.

In summary If the iPhone 5 is an evolutionary step like the move from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS then we'd expect the price to stay more or less the same, although in the UK higher VAT rates may well mean a higher price tag.
