Hikmat Surya Permana dan Personal Komputer

Pertama kali saya belajar komputer,
saya belajar dengan komputer 286 dengan prosesor
8 MHz, dan layar Monochrome (hitam putih)

Secara intensif, pertama kali berkenalan dengan komputer ketika menginjak kelas 1 SMA (1991), ketika ada pelajaran Komputer. Saat itu saya belajar tentang sistem operasi DOS (MS-DOS) dan belajar mengetik dengan menggunakan WordStar. Merupakan pelajaran yang sungguh mengasyikan. Sejak saat itu juga saya bercita-cita untuk memiliki komputer sendiri.

Beruntung saya punya teman yang kakaknya kuliah di Teknik Informatika dan punya komputer. Bersama teman lainnya kami sering hang-out dan ngulik berbagai program komputer dan games. Flowchart, Banner, Basic adalah sebagian kecil yang saya hapal pernah kami ulik.

Di waktu lainnya kami juga bermain games Pac-Man, Rick Dangerous, LHX, Gunship 2000, dan beberapa games lainnya. Saya juga menabung untuk membeli beberapa buku tentang komputer. Walaupun belum memiliki komputer saat itu, saya yakin buku itu akan bermanfaat suatu saat nanti.

Komputer pertama kami,
sebuah Pentium generasi pertama
dengan kecepatan 100MHz,
persis seperti ini bentuknya.

Lima tahun kemudian keluarga kami akhirnya memiliki satu buah unit komputer. Sebuah penantian yang sangat lama. Beruntung selama masa penantian itu saya selalu mencatat impian-impian saya, yang mesti saya lakukan bila kelak memiliki komputer. Sebenarnya, kurang tepat bila disebut catatan impian, tapi lebih tepat sebagai catatan Task List.

Well, tahukah anda berapa lama saya menghabiskan waktu di depan komputer baru itu saat itu? Lebih dari 16 jam setiap harinya.

Di komputer baru itu telah terinstal Microsoft Office 95, Corel Draw 6, Adobe Photoshop 6, Visio (Saat itu Visio masih berdiri sendiri dan belum dibeli oleh Microsoft). Dan dalam waktu yang tidak lama saya berhasil mampu menggunakan semua program itu.

Untuk utilitasnya komputer itu terinstal Norton Utilities dan Norton Commander, PC Tools, dan beberapa lainnya, membuat saya sedikit banyak belajar tentang hardware komputer.

Semua Help pada program-program itu saya cetak alias diprint sendiri. Jangan tanyakan berapa rim kertas dan tinta refill yang habis untuk itu, yang pastinya jauh lebih mahal dibandingkan bila kita membeli buku tutorialnya yang mulai banyak beredar saat itu.

Perjalananan saya dengan komputer itu membuka cakrawala pada sebuah dunia baru, dunia digital, dunia yang benar-benar penuh warna (dan pixels). Dan karena itu selama memiliki komputer itu makin banyak program dan utilitas yang saya tahu dan bisa saya gunakan.

Hikmat Surya Permana dan Internet

Tahun 2001, tepatnya Selasa 11 September, saya mulai intens mengakses internet. Bisa dipastikan bila tidak ada di depan komputer di rumah, atau komputer di kosan teman, saya pasti berada di warnet (Warung Internet). Yang bila dipikir-pikir bisa jadi sebuah pola hidup yang sangat membosankan.

Internetworking

Saya takjub melihat kehebatan internet saat itu. Pagi-pagi saya melihat flash news di televisi tentang serangan ke Gedung World Trade Center yang mengakibatkan runtuhnya menara kembar di kota New York itu. Sore harinya setelah pulang kuliah, saya ke warnet dan mendapatkan segala sesuatu tentang peristiwa hebat tadi paginya. Mulai dari video ditabraknya gedung itu, jumlah korban, sampai berbagai rumor seputar latar belakang politik dan konspirasi hancurnya gedung itu, semuanya ada disana. Saya sempat freezing selama beberapa menit karena information-overload di kepala. Televisi tidak secepat ini.

Sejak saat itu saya bertekad untuk memahami bahasa HTML, bahasa gaul yang dipakai di dunia internet.

Seiring dengan pembelajaran HTML, saya juga dipaksa untuk mengenal CSS dan Javascript secara lebih jauh. Javascript merupakan feature HTML programming yang membuat internet tampil lebih memukau. Membuat saya mengambil kursus pemrograman C/C++, bahasa nenek moyangnya Javascript.

Pengalaman saya itu membuat saya berkenalan dengan berbagai jenis text editor dan hex editor. Dari mulai Notepad yang terintegrasi di Windows, sampai EditPad dan EditPlus. Sampai akhirnya saya menemukan Macromedia Dreamweaver (kini Macromedia telah dibeli oleh Adobe Corporation, perusahaan pengembang Adobe Photoshop). Sejak saat itu EditPlus dan Macromedia Dreamweaver selalu menemani kemanapun saya pergi.

Saya membuat dua buah website, di Tripod dan di Geocities. Kini mereka tinggal sejarah sejak Tripod dibeli Lycos dan Geocities, - yang menyimpan banyak situs komunitas yang hebat, - dihentikan operasinya oleh Yahoo! sang pemilik.

Tahun 2002 saya mulai bekerja di sebuah konsultan perencanaan kota, people gotta eat to survive you know. Anyway, saya mulai terdistraksi dari kegiatan mengulik komputer dan internet. Saya juga jarang ke warnet.

Tahun 2008, saya memaksakan diri untuk berlangganan internet. Waktu itu saya telah menikah dan juga telah bekerja sebagai guru honor di sebuah sekolah negeri di Bandung. Sebagai guru honor saya punya banyak waktu luang di malam hari untuk ngulik komputer dan internet.

Di tahun 2008, Internet sudah sangat berbeda, web-nya sudah generasi dua (Web 2.0) HTMLnya juga sudah HTML 4 (HTML 5 saat itu sedang taraf pengembangan), juga ada varian HTML yang disebut XHTML (Extended HTML, sebuah kombinasi antara HTML dan XML). XML adalah bahasa markup yang universal yang banyak diadopsi kedalam berbagai pemrograman.

Dengan XHTML ini saya tidak terkejut bahwa dimasa mendatang, program akan berbasis online, dengan kata lain, program dan internet akan selalu terkoneksi, dan akhirnya kita, sebagai pengguna komputer dan programnya akan digiring (dipaksa) untuk selalu online. Dan karena itu saya yakin, kedepannya setiap rumah akan memiliki minimal 1 akses internet.

Sayangnya di Indonesia, memiliki akses internet adalah sesuatu yang masih sangat mahal, so precious. Sementara di beberapa negara maju, internet sudah digratiskan mengingat begitu banyaknya manfaat yang bisa diambil darinya.

Sebagai guru honor, memiliki akses internet bagai memiliki sebuah priviledge yang sangat mewah. Hampir sepertiga honornya habis untuk mengakses internet. Sedikit memaksakan memang memiliki akses internet ini. Namun setelah diberi penjelasan, istri saya yang sangat cantik dan solehah mengerti dan mau mendukung suaminya yang bisa dibilang keras kepala.

Well, setelah empat bulan, akhirnya saya harus menghentikan akses internet ini karena sesuatu dan lain hal. Dalam empat bulan yang sangat precious itu, saya punya beberapa blog di Wordpress dan Blogger, Level 4 di Yahoo! Answer (Sebelum akhirnya di-banned), padahal saya berniat untuk mencapai Level 7.

Lucu tentang Yahoo! Answer ini, saya ditendang karena menjawab sebuah pertanyaan tentang cara mendownload dan peer-to-peer. Saya memang tidak membaca Terms and Agreementnya, my bad, namun saya sama sekali tidak menduga peer-to-peer (atau P2P) ini dilarang di Yahoo! Answer.

Sesuatu yang telah menjadi ruh, fondasi internet malah dilarang di Yahoo! Answer. Sungguh diluar dugaan saya. Saya pun mengajukan complain kepada orang-orang Yahoo! nun jauh di sana. Mengapa saya di-banned dan hal seperti P2P dilarang di Yahoo! Answer. Saya mengajukan 'banding' dan menjelaskan bahwa tanpa P2P tidak akan ada yang namanya internet. Tapi mereka 'keukeuh' menggunakan Term and Agreement itu untuk menendang saya dari Yahoo! Answer.

Ya, apa mau dikata, saya mesti mengucapkan selamat tinggal kepada cita-cita saya menjadi Level 7 Yahoo! Answer dan juga kepada Yahoo! secara keseluruhan. (Sampai detik ini saya masih tidak terima di-banned dari Yahoo! Answer, hiks).

Sejak saat itu saya switching ke Google. Semua email saya di Yahoo! (jumlahnya puluhan) saya forward ke GMail (layanan email yang didukung oleh Google). Dan beruntung semua yang ada di Google saya suka.

Saya suka huruf O yang banyak sekali berjajar bila saya mencari sesuatu di internet. Saya suka logonya yang berubah-ubah mengikuti peristiwa bersejarah di hari itu. Saya suka sejarah bagaimana Larry Page dan Sergey Brin membangun Google sejak ketika Google masih di Stanford dan bernama BackRub. Cool!

Selama 4 bulan itu, four precious months of my life, saya banyak sekali mendownload buku digital, pictures, program. Koleksi digital saya sekarang sudah lebih dari 1 terrabyte. Koleksi ebook saya sudah lebih dari 18.000 judul buku. Dan banyak extension lainnya.

Di tahun itu saya juga bergabung di Facebook,bukan apa-apa, karena tampilan Facebook lebih rapih dibandingkan Friendster. Facebook saat itu belum seterkenal sekarang, bahkan mau dijual ke Yahoo! sebesar 1 Juta Dollar. Thank God orang-orang Yahoo! menolaknya.

Terbayang oleh saya di pikiran, sekarang, bila jadi Facebook diakuisisi oleh Yahoo! saya mungkin tidak punya akun Facebook sekarang.

Di akhir tahun 2008, saya punya banyak waktu untuk membaca buku, ngulik program, menikmati gambar-gambar yang indah, bermain games, sambil menikmati lagu-lagu merdu.

Kemudian anak pertama saya lahir, saya bisa fokus padanya. Saya kemudian ngulik jadi ayah yang baik, jadi suami yang baik, and being a good teacher.

Tahun 2010-2011, orang mulai banyak membicarakan tahun 2012. Tahun yang diramalkan bakal terjadi kiamat berkaitan dengan kitab ramalan bangsa Maya, kaitannya dengan Planet Nibiru, dan lain sebagainya. Membuat saya sedikit banyak pergi ke warnet, memuaskan naluri curiousity saya.

Awal 2011, saya memutuskan kembali memakai akses internet, tapi kali ini menggunakan dial up mobile modem, paket internet hemat seadanya, unlimited memang, namun kecepatan akses jadi dikorbankan, jarang sekali kecepatannya lebih dari 10 kbps. Anda mesti memiliki kesabaran tinggi untuk bisa browsing dan mendownload sesuatu di internet.

Februari 22, 2011, lahirlah Simbya, blog personal yang saya bangun secara lebih profesional, misinya satu, menjadi pelengkap media pendidikan formal. Maka jadilah tagline-nya Ilmu jalanan yang tidak diajarkan di bangku sekolah dan bangku kuliah.

Yang membuat saya senang adalah, walaupun postingnya masih sedikit, saat ini Simbya dikunjungi oleh rata-rata 30 orang setiap harinya dengan pageview 60 halaman perhari. Not bad for a rookie.

Simbya menginspirasi saya untuk mengembangkan blog saya yang lainnya yang telah lama terabaikan. Dan jadilah blog ini, blog yang seakan terlahir kembali.

Blog ini, temanya sama seperti dulu, blog personal resmi (official) saya, media untuk berbagi apa yang saya ketahui dan pernah alami. Termasuk beberapa pelajaran yang saya ajarkan di sekolah.

Introducing : Connect, Collaborate, Communicate - New Theme for 2012

It has been about two week since the first day of 2012. And I have just finished contemplating myself and my blogs. From now on Hikmat Surya Permana is using its own theme, created from scratch by its author (that would be me), using Maroon color as the central color.

After long hours of interpreting the languange of Blogspot, now I can do a little bit of manipulating the theme, thank God. And for the blog tag, I used : Connect, Collaborate, Communicate. Sounds great isn't it ?!.

I just hope you'll like it, just as I like it.

Selain itu kami juga ingin memperkenalkan kategori baru : English dan Indonesia. Dengan kategori ini anda bisa langsung mencari postingan atau artikel yang berbeda bahasa. Sesuatu yang seharusnya kami lakukan sejak dulu kala :D

Sebagai seorang guru di dunia nyata, kami ingin juga berbagi ilmu dan pengetahuan kami untuk warga yang lebih luas, bukan hanya di sekolah kami, namun juga bagi warga dunia. Tweaking Windows XP Using a Freeware SafeXP

Why Tweaking Windows XP?

There's a lot of reason why we should tweak our Windows XP. You know that XP came in a standard massive package for the sake of massive people around the world. So there would be Services, Startups, Registries and others, to fulfill massive needs of the people.

These standard settings that XP have, sometime make the computer runs slow. That why most of us need to tweak it that our PC runs relatively faster.

A few years ago in 2004, I stumble upon a freeware site that provide a free tweaker utility to speed up the computer by tweaking some XP features. The utility called SafeXP and I use it until now and it serves me well.

The options include Media Player settings, Services settings (error reporting, time synch, remote registry etc.), as well as and option to remove items from the Start menu, network security settings and more.

Command Line

In network (domain) environment, you can copy both SafeXP.exe and (for instance) SafeXP.dat files to the Netlogon share to load your predefined Safe XP settings silently to every workstation which is connected to the network. The command-line parameter is optional. If no parameter is specified, the program will start normally.

Tweaking Windows XP for PC Gaming

There's a moment when I had despair in my life. Everything I did was all mistakes. I depressed. Yeah, that were life, reality. Reality sometimes sucks!. I then again answering Yahoo! Answer, helping others, in the quest of developing my own dignity that was scrumbled. And googling the net to find some amusement to entertain myself.

Then I stumble upon some pages in despair.com. There were pictures that really amuse me. Well, at least I entertained and laughed out loud of myself. Here are pictures of them. Or you may go there, to find more entertainment...

About The Comic

The Adventures of Asterix (French: Astérix or Astérix le Gaulois) is a series of French comic strips written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo (Uderzo also took over the job of writing the series after the death of Goscinny in 1977). The series first appeared in French in the magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. As of 2008, 33 comic books in the series have been released.

The series follows the exploits of a village of ancient Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewed by their druid, which gives the recipient superhuman strength. The protagonist, the titular character, Asterix, along with his friend Obelix have various adventures. In many cases, this leads them to travel to various countries around the world, though other books are set in and around their village.

The Asterix series is one of the most popular Franco-Belgian comics in the world, with the series being translated into over 100 languages, and it is popular in most European countries. Asterix is less well known in the United States and Japan.

The success of the series has led to the adaptation of several books into films; eight animated, and three with live actors. There have also been a number of games based on the characters, and a French theme park, Parc Asterix, is themed around the series.

Synopsis and Characters

The main setting for the series is an unnamed coastal village in Armorica, a province of Gaul (modern France), in the year 50 BC. Julius Caesar has conquered nearly all of Gaul for the Roman Empire, however the little Armorican village has held out because the villagers can gain temporary superhuman strength by drinking a magic potion brewed by the local village druid, Getafix.

The main protagonist, and hero of the village, is Asterix, who is usually entrusted with the most important affairs of the village, because of his cunning. He is aided in his adventures by his rather unintelligent friend Obelix, who has permanent superhuman strength, as he fell into the cauldron of the potion as a baby. Obelix is often accompanied by Dogmatix, his little dog.

Asterix and Obelix (and sometimes other members of the village), go on various adventures both within the village, and in far away lands. Places visited in the series include parts of Gaul (Lutetia, Corsica etc), neighbouring nations (Belgium, Spain, Britain, Germany etc), and far away lands (North America, Middle East, India etc).

The series employs science-fiction and fantasy elements in the more recent books, for instance the use of extraterrestrials in Asterix and the Falling Sky and the city of Atlantis in Asterix and Obelix All at Sea.

I love The Adventures of Tintin Comics since I was a kid. My first collection was the Secret of the Unicorn which my uncle gave to as present. Now I have all the collection in PDF format, including the rare Alph-Art.

The Adventures of Tintin (French: Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic strips created by Belgian artist Hergé, the pen name of Georges Remi (1907-1983). The series first appeared in French in a children's supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtième Siècle on 10 January 1929. Set in a painstakingly researched world closely mirroring our own, the series has continued as a favourite of readers and critics alike for 80 years.

The hero of the series is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter. He is aided in his adventures from the beginning by his faithful fox terrier dog Snowy (Milou in French). Later, popular additions to the cast included the brash, cynical and grumpy Captain Haddock, the bright but hearing-impaired Professor Calculus (Professeur Tournesol) and other colourful supporting characters such as the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond et Dupont). Hergé himself features in every comic, as a background character.

The success of the series saw the serialised strips collected into a series of albums (24 in all), spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.

The comic strip series has long been admired for its clean, expressive drawings in Hergé's signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a variety of genres: swashbuckling adventures with elements of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. The stories within the Tintin series always feature slapstick humour, offset in later albums by sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary.

History

Tintin is a reporter, and Hergé uses this to present the character in a number of adventures which were contemporaneous to the period in which he was working (most notably, the Bolshevik uprising in Russia and the Second World War) and sometimes even prescient (as in the case of the moon landings). Hergé also created a world for Tintin which managed to reduce detail to a simplified but recognisable and realistic representation, an effect Hergé was able to achieve with reference to a well-maintained archive of images.

Though Tintin's adventures are formulaic presenting a mystery which is then solved logically Hergé infused the strip with his own sense of humour, and created supporting characters who, although predictable, were filled with charm that allowed the reader to engage with them. This formula of comfortable, humorous predictability is similar to the presentation of cast in the Peanuts strip or The Three Stooges. Hergé also had a great understanding of the mechanics of the comic strip, especially pacing, a skill displayed in The Castafiore Emerald, a work he meant to be packed with tension in which nothing actually happens.

Hergé initially improvised the creation of Tintin's adventures, uncertain how Tintin would escape from whatever predicament appeared. Not until after the completion of Cigars of the Pharaoh was Hergé encouraged to research and plan his stories. The impetus came from Zhang Chongren, a Chinese student who, on hearing Hergé was to send Tintin to China in his next adventure, urged him to avoid perpetuating the perceptions Europeans had of China at the time. Hergé and Zhang collaborated on the next serial, The Blue Lotus, which has been cited by critics as Hergé's first masterpiece. Interestingly, The Blue Lotus includes a reference to the European stereotypes associated with China, in a context that causes them to appear ridiculous.

Other changes to the mechanics of creating the strip were forced on Hergé by outside events. The Second World War and the invasion of Belgium by Hitler's armies saw the closure of the newspaper in which Tintin was serialised. Work was halted on Land of Black Gold, and the already published Tintin in America and The Black Island were banned by the Nazi censors, who were concerned at their presentation of America and Britain. However, Hergé was able to continue with Tintin's adventures, publishing four books and serialising two more adventures in a German-licensed newspaper.

During and after the German occupation Hergé was accused of being a collaborator because of the Nazi control of the paper (Le Soir), and he was briefly taken for interrogation after the war. He claimed that he was simply doing a job under the occupation, like a plumber or carpenter. His work of this period, unlike earlier and later work, is politically neutral and resulted in stories such as The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure; but the apocalyptic The Shooting Star reflects the foreboding Hergé felt during this uncertain political period.

A post-war paper shortage forced changes in the format of the books. Hergé had usually allowed the stories to develop to a length that suited the story, but with paper now in short supply, publishers Casterman asked Hergé to consider using smaller panel sizes and adopt a fixed length of 62 pages. Hergé took on more staff (the first ten books having been produced by himself and his wife), eventually building a studio system.

The adoption of colour allowed Hergé to expand the scope of the works. His use of colour was more advanced than that of American comics of the time, with better production values allowing a combination of the four printing shades and thus a cinematographic approach to lighting and shading. Hergé and his studio would allow images to fill half pages or more, simply to detail and accentuate the scene, using colour to emphasise important points. Hergé notes this fact, stating "I consider my stories as movies. No narration, no descriptions, emphasis is given to images".

Hergé's personal life also affected the series; Tintin in Tibet was heavily influenced by his nervous breakdown. His nightmares, which he reportedly described as being "all white", are reflected in the snowy landscapes. The plot has Tintin set off in search of Chang Chong-Chen, previously seen in The Blue Lotus, and the piece contains no villains and little moral judgment, with Hergé even refusing to condemn the Snowman of the Himalayas as "abominable".

Hergé's death on 3 March 1983 left the twenty-fourth and final adventure, Tintin and Alph-Art, unfinished. The plot saw Tintin embroiled in the world of modern art, and the story ended as he is about to be killed, encased in perspex and presented as a work of art, although it is unknown whether he really dies at the end of the story.

The Characters

Tintin and Snowy

Tintin is a young Belgian reporter who becomes involved in dangerous cases in which he takes heroic action to save the day. Almost every adventure features Tintin hard at work in his investigative journalism, but he is seldom seen actually turning in a story without first getting caught up in some misadventure. He is a young man of more or less neutral attitudes and is less colourful than the supporting cast. In this respect, he represents the everyman.

Snowy, a white Fox terrier, is Tintin's four-legged companion. They regularly save each other from perilous situations. Snowy frequently "speaks" to the reader through his thoughts (often displaying a dry sense of humour), which are supposedly not heard by the human characters in the story except in Tintin in America, wherein he explains to Tintin his absence for a period of time in the book.

Like Captain Haddock, Snowy is fond of the Loch Lomond brand of whisky, and his occasional bouts of drinking tend to get him into trouble, as does his arachnophobia. The French name of Snowy, "Milou," has nothing to do with snow or the colour white. It has been widely credited as an oblique reference to a girlfriend from Hergé's youth, Marie-Louise Van Cutsem, whose nickname was "Milou".

Another explanation to the origins of the two characters is possible. The first 3 adventures of Tintin visit places originally visited by photographer-reporter Robert Sexé, recorded in the Belgian press from the mid to late 1920s. At that time Sexé had made numerous trips round the world on a motorcycle, in collaboration with Grand-Prix champion and motorcycle record-holder René Milhoux, and these trips were highly publicized at the time. Sexé has also been noted to have a similar appearance to Tintin, and the Hergé Foundation in Belgium has admitted that it is not too hard to imagine how Hergé could have been influenced by the exploits of Sexé. In 1996, a biography of Robert Sexé by Janpol Schulz was published, titled "Sexé au pays des Soviets" (Sexé in the Land of the Soviets) to mimic the name of the first Tintin Adventure.

Captain Haddock

Captain Archibald Haddock, a seafaring captain of disputed ancestry (he may be of English, French, or Belgian origin), is Tintin's best friend, and was introduced in The Crab with the Golden Claws. Haddock was initially depicted as a weak and alcoholic character, but later became more respectable. He evolves to become genuinely heroic and even a socialite after he finds a treasure captured by his ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock (François de Hadoque in French), in the episode Red Rackham's Treasure. The Captain's coarse humanity and sarcasm act as a counterpoint to Tintin's often implausible heroism; he is always quick with a dry comment whenever the boy reporter seems too idealistic.

Captain Haddock lives in the luxurious mansion Marlinspike Hall ("Moulinsart" in the original French).

Haddock uses a range of colourful insults and curses to express his feelings, such as "billions of blue blistering barnacles," "ten thousand thundering typhoons," "troglodyte," "bashi-bazouk," "kleptomaniac," "ectoplasm," "sea-gherkin," "anacoluthon," and "pockmark," but nothing that is actually considered a swear word. Haddock is a hard drinker, particularly fond of Loch Lomond whisky, and his bouts of drunkenness are often used for comic effect. Hergé stated that Haddock's surname was derived from a "sad English fish that drinks a lot."Haddock remained without a first name until the last completed story, Tintin and the Picaros (1976), when the name Archibald was suggested. Tintin and Alph-Art maintained this suggestion by having him introduce himself as such.

This is present for Compatibility with DOS systems. It has no effect

CALL command now accepts labels as the target of the CALL.  The syntax

      %~s1        - expanded path contains short names only

                     environment variable and expands %1 to the fully
                     qualified name of the first one found.  If the
                     environment variable name is not defined or the
                     file is not found by the search, then this
                     modifier expands to the empty string

  The modifiers can be combined to get compound results:

      %~dp1       - expands %1 to a drive letter and path only
      %~nx1       - expands %1 to a file name and extension only
      %~dp$PATH:1 - searches the directories listed in the PATH
                     environment variable for %1 and expands to the
                     drive letter and path of the first one found.
      %~ftza1     - expands %1 to a DIR like output line

  In the above examples %1 and PATH can be replaced by other
  valid values.  The %~ syntax is terminated by a valid argument
  number.  The %~ modifiers may not be used with %*

CD       Displays the name of or changes the current directory.
CHDIR    Displays the name of or changes the current directory.
CHDIR [/D] [drive:][path]

..   Specifies that you want to change to the parent directory.

Type CD drive: to display the current directory in the specified drive.
Type CD without parameters to display the current drive and directory.


Use the /D switch to change current drive in addition to changing current
directory for a drive.

If Command Extensions are enabled CHDIR changes as follows:

The current directory string is converted to use the same case as
the on disk names.  So CD C:\TEMP would actually set the current
directory to C:\Temp if that is the case on disk.

CHDIR command does not treat spaces as delimiters, so it is possible to
CD into a subdirectory name that contains a space without surrounding
the name with quotes.  For example:

  cd \winnt\profiles\username\programs\start menu

is the same as:

  cd "\winnt\profiles\username\programs\start menu"

which is what you would have to type if extensions were disabled.

CHCP     Displays or sets the active code page number.
CHCP [nnn]

nnn   Specifies a code page number.

Type CHCP without a parameter to display the active code page number.

CHKDSK   Checks a disk and displays a status report.
CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]]


volume          Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
                mount point, or volume name.
filename        FAT/FAT32 only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation
.
/F              Fixes errors on the disk.
/V              On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file
                on the disk.
                On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any.
/R              Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information
                (implies /F).
/L:size         NTFS only:  Changes the log file size to the specified number
                of kilobytes.  If size is not specified, displays current
                size.
/X              Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
                All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid
                (implies /F).
/I              NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C              NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder
                structure.

The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by
skipping certain checks of the volume.

CHKNTFS  Displays or modifies the checking of disk at boot time.

volume         Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
               mount point, or volume name.
/D             Restores the machine to the default behavior; all drives are
               checked at boot time and chkdsk is run on those that are
               dirty.
/T:time        Changes the AUTOCHK initiation countdown time to the
               specified amount of time in seconds.  If time is not
               specified, displays the current setting.
/X             Excludes a drive from the default boot-time check.  Excluded
               drives are not accumulated between command invocations.
/C             Schedules a drive to be checked at boot time; chkdsk will run
               if the drive is dirty.

If no switches are specified, CHKNTFS will display if the specified drive is
dirty or scheduled to be checked on next reboot.

CLS      Clears the screen.
Clears the screen.

CMD      Starts a new instance of the Windows command interpreter.
CMD [/A | /U] [/Q] [/D] [/E:ON | /E:OFF] [/F:ON | /F:OFF] [/V:ON | /V:OFF]
  [[/S] [/C | /K] string]

/C      Carries out the command specified by string and then terminates
/K      Carries out the command specified by string but remains
/S      Modifies the treatment of string after /C or /K (see below)
/Q      Turns echo off
/D      Disable execution of AutoRun commands from registry (see below)
/A      Causes the output of internal commands to a pipe or file to be ANSI
/U      Causes the output of internal commands to a pipe or file to be
      Unicode
/T:fg   Sets the foreground/background colors (see COLOR /? for more info)
/E:ON   Enable command extensions (see below)
/E:OFF  Disable command extensions (see below)
/F:ON   Enable file and directory name completion characters (see below)
/F:OFF  Disable file and directory name completion characters (see below)
/V:ON   Enable delayed environment variable expansion using ! as the
      delimiter. For example, /V:ON would allow !var! to expand the
      variable var at execution time.  The var syntax expands variables
      at input time, which is quite a different thing when inside of a FOR
      loop.
/V:OFF  Disable delayed environment expansion.

Note that multiple commands separated by the command separator '&&'
are accepted for string if surrounded by quotes.  Also, for compatibility
reasons, /X is the same as /E:ON, /Y is the same as /E:OFF and /R is the
same as /C.  Any other switches are ignored.

If /C or /K is specified, then the remainder of the command line after
the switch is processed as a command line, where the following logic is
used to process quote (") characters:

  1.  If all of the following conditions are met, then quote characters
      on the command line are preserved:

      - no /S switch
      - exactly two quote characters
      - no special characters between the two quote characters,
        where special is one of: &<>()@^|
      - there are one or more whitespace characters between the
        the two quote characters
      - the string between the two quote characters is the name
        of an executable file.

  2.  Otherwise, old behavior is to see if the first character is
      a quote character and if so, strip the leading character and
      remove the last quote character on the command line, preserving
      any text after the last quote character.

If /D was NOT specified on the command line, then when CMD.EXE starts, it
looks for the following REG_SZ/REG_EXPAND_SZ registry variables, and if
either or both are present, they are executed first.

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\AutoRun

      and/or

  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\AutoRun

Command Extensions are enabled by default.  You may also disable
extensions for a particular invocation by using the /E:OFF switch.  You
can enable or disable extensions for all invocations of CMD.EXE on a
machine and/or user logon session by setting either or both of the
following REG_DWORD values in the registry using REGEDT32.EXE:

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\EnableExtensions

      and/or

  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\EnableExtensions

to either 0x1 or 0x0.  The user specific setting takes precedence over
the machine setting.  The command line switches take precedence over the
registry settings.

The command extensions involve changes and/or additions to the following
commands:

  DEL or ERASE
  COLOR
  CD or CHDIR
  MD or MKDIR
  PROMPT
  PUSHD
  POPD
  SET
  SETLOCAL
  ENDLOCAL
  IF
  FOR
  CALL
  SHIFT
  GOTO
  START (also includes changes to external command invocation)
  ASSOC
  FTYPE

To get specific details, type commandname /? to view the specifics.

Delayed environment variable expansion is NOT enabled by default.  You
can enable or disable delayed environment variable expansion for a
particular invocation of CMD.EXE with the /V:ON or /V:OFF switch.  You
can enable or disable completion for all invocations of CMD.EXE on a
machine and/or user logon session by setting either or both of the
following REG_DWORD values in the registry using REGEDT32.EXE:

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\DelayedExpansion

      and/or

  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\DelayedExpansion

to either 0x1 or 0x0.  The user specific setting takes precedence over
the machine setting.  The command line switches take precedence over the
registry settings.

If delayed environment variable expansion is enabled, then the exclamation
character can be used to substitute the value of an environment variable
at execution time.

File and Directory name completion is NOT enabled by default.  You can
enable or disable file name completion for a particular invocation of
CMD.EXE with the /F:ON or /F:OFF switch.  You can enable or disable
completion for all invocations of CMD.EXE on a machine and/or user logon
session by setting either or both of the following REG_DWORD values in
the registry using REGEDT32.EXE:

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\CompletionChar
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\PathCompletionChar

      and/or

  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\CompletionChar
  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\PathCompletionChar

with the hex value of a control character to use for a particular
function (e.g.  0x4 is Ctrl-D and 0x6 is Ctrl-F).  The user specific
settings take precedence over the machine settings.  The command line
switches take precedence over the registry settings.

If completion is enabled with the /F:ON switch, the two control
characters used are Ctrl-D for directory name completion and Ctrl-F for
file name completion.  To disable a particular completion character in
the registry, use the value for space (0x20) as it is not a valid
control character.

Completion is invoked when you type either of the two control
characters.  The completion function takes the path string to the left
of the cursor appends a wild card character to it if none is already
present and builds up a list of paths that match.  It then displays the
first matching path.  If no paths match, it just beeps and leaves the
display alone.  Thereafter, repeated pressing of the same control
character will cycle through the list of matching paths.  Pressing the
Shift key with the control character will move through the list
backwards.  If you edit the line in any way and press the control
character again, the saved list of matching paths is discarded and a new
one generated.  The same occurs if you switch between file and directory
name completion.  The only difference between the two control characters
is the file completion character matches both file and directory names,
while the directory completion character only matches directory names.
If file completion is used on any of the built in directory commands
(CD, MD or RD) then directory completion is assumed.

The completion code deals correctly with file names that contain spaces
or other special characters by placing quotes around the matching path.
Also, if you back up, then invoke completion from within a line, the
text to the right of the cursor at the point completion was invoked is
discarded.

The special characters that require quotes are:
   
   &()[]{}^=;!'+,`~

COLOR    Sets the default console foreground and background colors.
COLOR [attr]

attr        Specifies color attribute of console output

Color attributes are specified by TWO hex digits -- the first
corresponds to the background; the second the foreground.  Each digit
can be any of the following values:

  0 = Black       8 = Gray
  1 = Blue        9 = Light Blue
  2 = Green       A = Light Green
  3 = Aqua        B = Light Aqua
  4 = Red         C = Light Red
  5 = Purple      D = Light Purple
  6 = Yellow      E = Light Yellow
  7 = White       F = Bright White

If no argument is given, this command restores the color to what it was
when CMD.EXE started.  This value either comes from the current console
window, the /T command line switch or from the DefaultColor registry
value.

The COLOR command sets ERRORLEVEL to 1 if an attempt is made to execute
the COLOR command with a foreground and background color that are the
same.

Example: "COLOR fc" produces light red on bright white

COMP     Compares the contents of two files or sets of files.
COMP [data1] [data2] [/D] [/A] [/L] [/N=number] [/C] [/OFF[LINE]]

data1      Specifies location and name(s) of first file(s) to compare.
data2      Specifies location and name(s) of second files to compare.
/D         Displays differences in decimal format.
/A         Displays differences in ASCII characters.
/L         Displays line numbers for differences.
/N=number  Compares only the first specified number of lines in each file.
/C         Disregards case of ASCII letters when comparing files.
/OFF[LINE] Do not skip files with offline attribute set.

To compare sets of files, use wildcards in data1 and data2 parameters.

COMPACT  Displays or alters the compression of files on NTFS partitions.
COMP [data1] [data2] [/D] [/A] [/L] [/N=number] [/C] [/OFF[LINE]]

data1      Specifies location and name(s) of first file(s) to compare.
data2      Specifies location and name(s) of second files to compare.
/D         Displays differences in decimal format.
/A         Displays differences in ASCII characters.
/L         Displays line numbers for differences.
/N=number  Compares only the first specified number of lines in each file.
/C         Disregards case of ASCII letters when comparing files.
/OFF[LINE] Do not skip files with offline attribute set.

To compare sets of files, use wildcards in data1 and data2 parameters.

CONVERT  Converts FAT volumes to NTFS.  You cannot convert the
       current drive.
CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V] [/CvtArea:filename] [/NoSecurity] [/X]

volume      Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
            mount point, or volume name.
/FS:NTFS    Specifies that the volume is to be converted to NTFS.
/V          Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode.
/CvtArea:filename
            Specifies a contiguous file in the root directory to be
            the place holder for NTFS system files.
/NoSecurity Specifies the converted files and directories security
            settings to be accessible by everyone.
/X          Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
            All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid.

COPY     Copies one or more files to another location.
COPY [/D] [/V] [/N] [/Y | /-Y] [/Z] [/A | /B ] source [/A | /B]
   [+ source [/A | /B] [+ ...]] [destination [/A | /B]]

source       Specifies the file or files to be copied.
/A           Indicates an ASCII text file.
/B           Indicates a binary file.
/D           Allow the destination file to be created decrypted
destination  Specifies the directory and/or filename for the new file(s).
/V           Verifies that new files are written correctly.
/N           Uses short filename, if available, when copying a file with a
             non-8dot3 name.
/Y           Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
             existing destination file.
/-Y          Causes prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
             existing destination file.
/Z           Copies networked files in restartable mode.

The switch /Y may be preset in the COPYCMD environment variable.
This may be overridden with /-Y on the command line.  Default is
to prompt on overwrites unless COPY command is being executed from
within a batch script.

To append files, specify a single file for destination, but multiple files
for source (using wildcards or file1+file2+file3 format).

DATE     Displays or sets the date.
DATE [/T | date]

Type DATE without parameters to display the current date setting and
a prompt for a new one.  Press ENTER to keep the same date.

If Command Extensions are enabled the DATE command supports
the /T switch which tells the command to just output the
current date, without prompting for a new date.

DEL      Deletes one or more files.
ERASE    Deletes one or more files.
DEL [/P] [/F] [/S] [/Q] [/A[[:]attributes]] names
ERASE [/P] [/F] [/S] [/Q] [/A[[:]attributes]] names

names         Specifies a list of one or more files or directories.
              Wildcards may be used to delete multiple files. If a
              directory is specified, all files within the directory
              will be deleted.

/P            Prompts for confirmation before deleting each file.
/F            Force deleting of read-only files.
/S            Delete specified files from all subdirectories.
/Q            Quiet mode, do not ask if ok to delete on global wildcard
/A            Selects files to delete based on attributes
attributes    R  Read-only files            S  System files
              H  Hidden files               A  Files ready for archiving
              -  Prefix meaning not

If Command Extensions are enabled DEL and ERASE change as follows:

The display semantics of the /S switch are reversed in that it shows
you only the files that are deleted, not the ones it could not find.

DIR      Displays a list of files and subdirectories in a directory.

Switches may be preset in the DIRCMD environment variable.  Override
preset switches by prefixing any switch with - (hyphen)--for example, /-W.

DISKCOMP Compares the contents of two floppy disks.
DISKCOMP [drive1: [drive2:]]

DISKCOPY Copies the contents of one floppy disk to another.
DISKCOPY [drive1: [drive2:]] [/V]

/V   Verifies that the information is copied correctly.

The two floppy disks must be the same type.
You may specify the same drive for drive1 and drive2.

DOSKEY   Edits command lines, recalls Windows commands, and creates macros.
DOSKEY [/REINSTALL] [/LISTSIZE=size] [/MACROS[:ALL | :exename]]

/REINSTALL          Installs a new copy of Doskey.
/LISTSIZE=size      Sets size of command history buffer.
/MACROS             Displays all Doskey macros.
/MACROS:ALL         Displays all Doskey macros for all executables which have
                    Doskey macros.
/MACROS:exename     Displays all Doskey macros for the given executable.
/HISTORY            Displays all commands stored in memory.
/INSERT             Specifies that new text you type is inserted in old text.
/OVERSTRIKE         Specifies that new text overwrites old text.
/EXENAME=exename    Specifies the executable.
/MACROFILE=filename Specifies a file of macros to install.
macroname           Specifies a name for a macro you create.
text                Specifies commands you want to record.

UP and DOWN ARROWS recall commands; ESC clears command line; F7 displays
command history; ALT+F7 clears command history; F8 searches command
history; F9 selects a command by number; ALT+F10 clears macro definitions.

The following are some special codes in Doskey macro definitions:
$T     Command separator.  Allows multiple commands in a macro.
$1-$9  Batch parameters.  Equivalent to %1-%9 in batch programs.
$*     Symbol replaced by everything following macro name on command line.

ECHO     Displays messages, or turns command echoing on or off.
  ECHO [ON | OFF]
ECHO [message]

Type ECHO without parameters to display the current echo setting.

ENDLOCAL Ends localization of environment changes in a batch file.
Ends localization of environment changes in a batch file.
Environment changes made after ENDLOCAL has been issued are
not local to the batch file; the previous settings are not
restored on termination of the batch file.

If Command Extensions are enabled ENDLOCAL changes as follows:

If the corresponding SETLOCAL enable or disabled command extensions
using the new ENABLEEXTENSIONS or DISABLEEXTENSIONS options, then
after the ENDLOCAL, the enabled/disabled state of command extensions
will be restored to what it was prior to the matching SETLOCAL
command execution.

EXIT     Quits the CMD.EXE program (command interpreter).
Quits the CMD.EXE program (command interpreter) or the current batch
script.

EXIT [/B] [exitCode]

/B          specifies to exit the current batch script instead of
            CMD.EXE.  If executed from outside a batch script, it
            will quit CMD.EXE

exitCode    specifies a numeric number.  if /B is specified, sets
            ERRORLEVEL that number.  If quitting CMD.EXE, sets the process
            exit code with that number.

FC       Compares two files or sets of files, and displays the differences
       between them.
FC [/A] [/C] [/L] [/LBn] [/N] [/OFF[LINE]] [/T] [/U] [/W] [/nnnn]

/T         Does not expand tabs to spaces.
/U         Compare files as UNICODE text files.
/W         Compresses white space (tabs and spaces) for comparison.
/nnnn      Specifies the number of consecutive lines that must match
           after a mismatch.

           Specifies the first file or set of files to compare.
[drive2:][path2]filename2
           Specifies the second file or set of files to compare.

FIND     Searches for a text string in a file or files.

/V         Displays all lines NOT containing the specified string.
/C         Displays only the count of lines containing the string.
/N         Displays line numbers with the displayed lines.
/I         Ignores the case of characters when searching for the string.

"string"   Specifies the text string to find.
[drive:][path]filename
           Specifies a file or files to search.

If a path is not specified, FIND searches the text typed at the prompt
or piped from another command.

FINDSTR  Searches for strings in files.

/B         Matches pattern if at the beginning of a line.
/E         Matches pattern if at the end of a line.
/L         Uses search strings literally.
/R         Uses search strings as regular expressions.
/S         Searches for matching files in the current directory and all
           subdirectories.
/I         Specifies that the search is not to be case-sensitive.
/X         Prints lines that match exactly.
/V         Prints only lines that do not contain a match.
/N         Prints the line number before each line that matches.
/M         Prints only the filename if a file contains a match.
/O         Prints character offset before each matching line.
/P         Skip files with non-printable characters.
/OFF[LINE] Do not skip files with offline attribute set.
/A:attr    Specifies color attribute with two hex digits. See "color /?"
/F:file    Reads file list from the specified file(/ stands for console).
/C:string  Uses specified string as a literal search string.
/G:file    Gets search strings from the specified file(/ stands for console).
/D:dir     Search a semicolon delimited list of directories
strings    Text to be searched for.
[drive:][path]filename
           Specifies a file or files to search.

Use spaces to separate multiple search strings unless the argument is prefixed
with /C.  For example, 'FINDSTR "hello there" x.y' searches for "hello" or
"there" in file x.y.  'FINDSTR /C:"hello there" x.y' searches for
"hello there" in file x.y.

FOR      Runs a specified command for each file in a set of files.
FOR %variable IN (set) DO command [command-parameters]

%variable  Specifies a single letter replaceable parameter.
(set)      Specifies a set of one or more files.  Wildcards may be used.
command    Specifies the command to carry out for each file.
command-parameters
           Specifies parameters or switches for the specified command.

To use the FOR command in a batch program, specify %%variable instead
of %variable.  Variable names are case sensitive, so %i is different
from %I.

If Command Extensions are enabled, the following additional
forms of the FOR command are supported:

FOR /D %variable IN (set) DO command [command-parameters]

  If set contains wildcards, then specifies to match against directory
  names instead of file names.

FOR /R [[drive:]path] %variable IN (set) DO command [command-parameters]

  Walks the directory tree rooted at [drive:]path, executing the FOR
  statement in each directory of the tree.  If no directory
  specification is specified after /R then the current directory is
  assumed.  If set is just a single period (.) character then it
  will just enumerate the directory tree.

FOR /L %variable IN (start,step,end) DO command [command-parameters]

  The set is a sequence of numbers from start to end, by step amount.
  So (1,1,5) would generate the sequence 1 2 3 4 5 and (5,-1,1) would
  generate the sequence (5 4 3 2 1)

FOR /F ["options"] %variable IN (file-set) DO command [command-parameters]
FOR /F ["options"] %variable IN ("string") DO command [command-parameters]
FOR /F ["options"] %variable IN ('command') DO command [command-parameters]

  or, if usebackq option present:

FOR /F ["options"] %variable IN (file-set) DO command [command-parameters]

FOR /F ["options"] %variable IN (`command`) DO command [command-parameters]

  filenameset is one or more file names.  Each file is opened, read
  and processed before going on to the next file in filenameset.
  Processing consists of reading in the file, breaking it up into
  individual lines of text and then parsing each line into zero or
  more tokens.  The body of the for loop is then called with the
  variable value(s) set to the found token string(s).  By default, /F
  passes the first blank separated token from each line of each file.
  Blank lines are skipped.  You can override the default parsing
  behavior by specifying the optional "options" parameter.  This
  is a quoted string which contains one or more keywords to specify
  different parsing options.  The keywords are:

      eol=c           - specifies an end of line comment character
                        (just one)
      skip=n          - specifies the number of lines to skip at the
                        beginning of the file.
      delims=xxx      - specifies a delimiter set.  This replaces the
                        default delimiter set of space and tab.
      tokens=x,y,m-n  - specifies which tokens from each line are to
                        be passed to the for body for each iteration.
                        This will cause additional variable names to
                        be allocated.  The m-n form is a range,
                        specifying the mth through the nth tokens.  If
                        the last character in the tokens= string is an
                        asterisk, then an additional variable is
                        allocated and receives the remaining text on
                        the line after the last token parsed.
      usebackq        - specifies that the new semantics are in force,
                        where a back quoted string is executed as a
                        command and a single quoted string is a
                        literal string command and allows the use of
                        double quotes to quote file names in
                        filenameset.

  Some examples might help:

FOR /F "eol=; tokens=2,3* delims=, " %i in (myfile.txt) do @echo %i %j %k

  would parse each line in myfile.txt, ignoring lines that begin with
  a semicolon, passing the 2nd and 3rd token from each line to the for
  body, with tokens delimited by commas and/or spaces.  Notice the for
  body statements reference %i to get the 2nd token, %j to get the
  3rd token, and %k to get all remaining tokens after the 3rd.  For
  file names that contain spaces, you need to quote the filenames with
  double quotes.  In order to use double quotes in this manner, you also
  need to use the usebackq option, otherwise the double quotes will be
  interpreted as defining a literal string to parse.

  %i is explicitly declared in the for statement and the %j and %k
  are implicitly declared via the tokens= option.  You can specify up
  to 26 tokens via the tokens= line, provided it does not cause an
  attempt to declare a variable higher than the letter 'z' or 'Z'.
  Remember, FOR variables are single-letter, case sensitive, global,
  and you can't have more than 52 total active at any one time.

  You can also use the FOR /F parsing logic on an immediate string, by
  making the filenameset between the parenthesis a quoted string,
  using single quote characters.  It will be treated as a single line
  of input from a file and parsed.

  Finally, you can use the FOR /F command to parse the output of a
  command.  You do this by making the filenameset between the
  parenthesis a back quoted string.  It will be treated as a command
  line, which is passed to a child CMD.EXE and the output is captured
  into memory and parsed as if it was a file.  So the following
  example:

    FOR /F "usebackq delims==" %i IN (`set`) DO @echo %i

  would enumerate the environment variable names in the current
  environment.

In addition, substitution of FOR variable references has been enhanced.
You can now use the following optional syntax:

  %~I         - expands %I removing any surrounding quotes (")
  %~fI        - expands %I to a fully qualified path name
  %~dI        - expands %I to a drive letter only
  %~pI        - expands %I to a path only
  %~nI        - expands %I to a file name only
  %~xI        - expands %I to a file extension only
  %~sI        - expanded path contains short names only
  %~aI        - expands %I to file attributes of file
  %~tI        - expands %I to date/time of file
  %~zI        - expands %I to size of file
  %~$PATH:I   - searches the directories listed in the PATH
                 environment variable and expands %I to the
                 fully qualified name of the first one found.
                 If the environment variable name is not
                 defined or the file is not found by the
                 search, then this modifier expands to the
                 empty string

The modifiers can be combined to get compound results:

  %~dpI       - expands %I to a drive letter and path only
  %~nxI       - expands %I to a file name and extension only
  %~fsI       - expands %I to a full path name with short names only
  %~dp$PATH:I - searches the directories listed in the PATH
                 environment variable for %I and expands to the
                 drive letter and path of the first one found.
  %~ftzaI     - expands %I to a DIR like output line

In the above examples %I and PATH can be replaced by other valid
values.  The %~ syntax is terminated by a valid FOR variable name.
Picking upper case variable names like %I makes it more readable and
avoids confusion with the modifiers, which are not case sensitive.

FORMAT   Formats a disk for use with Windows.
FORMAT volume [/FS:file-system] [/V:label] [/Q] [/A:size] [/C] [/X]
FORMAT volume [/V:label] [/Q] [/F:size]
FORMAT volume [/V:label] [/Q] [/T:tracks /N:sectors]
FORMAT volume [/V:label] [/Q]
FORMAT volume [/Q]

volume          Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
                mount point, or volume name.
/FS:filesystem  Specifies the type of the file system (FAT, FAT32, or NTFS).
/V:label        Specifies the volume label.
/Q              Performs a quick format.
/C              NTFS only: Files created on the new volume will be compressed
                by default.
/X              Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.  All opened
                handles to the volume would no longer be valid.
/A:size         Overrides the default allocation unit size. Default settings
                are strongly recommended for general use.
                NTFS supports 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16K, 32K, 64K.
                FAT supports 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16K, 32K, 64K,
                (128K, 256K for sector size > 512 bytes).
                FAT32 supports 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16K, 32K, 64K,
                (128K, 256K for sector size > 512 bytes).

                Note that the FAT and FAT32 files systems impose the
                following restrictions on the number of clusters on a volume:

                FAT: Number of clusters <= 65526                   FAT32: 65526 <>

FTYPE    Displays or modifies file types used in file extension associations.
FTYPE [fileType[=[openCommandString]]]

fileType  Specifies the file type to examine or change
openCommandString Specifies the open command to use when launching files
                  of this type.

Type FTYPE without parameters to display the current file types that
have open command strings defined.  FTYPE is invoked with just a file
type, it displays the current open command string for that file type.
Specify nothing for the open command string and the FTYPE command will
delete the open command string for the file type.  Within an open
command string %0 or %1 are substituted with the file name being
launched through the assocation.  %* gets all the parameters and %2
gets the 1st parameter, %3 the second, etc.  %~n gets all the remaining
parameters starting with the nth parameter, where n may be between 2 and 9,
inclusive.  For example:

  ASSOC .pl=PerlScript
  FTYPE PerlScript=perl.exe %1 %*

would allow you to invoke a Perl script as follows:

  script.pl 1 2 3

If you want to eliminate the need to type the extensions, then do the
following:

  set PATHEXT=.pl;%PATHEXT%

and the script could be invoked as follows:

  script 1 2 3


GOTO     Directs the Windows command interpreter to a labeled line in a
       batch program.
GOTO label

label   Specifies a text string used in the batch program as a label.

You type a label on a line by itself, beginning with a colon.

If Command Extensions are enabled GOTO changes as follows:

GOTO command now accepts a target label of :EOF which transfers control
to the end of the current batch script file.  This is an easy way to
exit a batch script file without defining a label.  Type CALL /?  for a
description of extensions to the CALL command that make this feature
useful.


GRAFTABL Enables Windows to display an extended character set in graphics
       mode.
GRAFTABL [xxx]
GRAFTABL /STATUS

 xxx      Specifies a code page number.
 /STATUS  Displays the current code page selected for use with GRAFTABL.


HELP     Provides Help information for Windows commands.

HELP [command]

  command - displays help information on that command.


IF       Performs conditional processing in batch programs.
IF [NOT] ERRORLEVEL number command
IF [NOT] string1==string2 command
IF [NOT] EXIST filename command

NOT               Specifies that Windows XP should carry out
                  the command only if the condition is false.

ERRORLEVEL number Specifies a true condition if the last program run
                  returned an exit code equal to or greater than the number
                  specified.

string1==string2  Specifies a true condition if the specified text strings
                  match.

EXIST filename    Specifies a true condition if the specified filename
                  exists.

command           Specifies the command to carry out if the condition is
                  met.  Command can be followed by ELSE command which
                  will execute the command after the ELSE keyword if the
                  specified condition is FALSE

The ELSE clause must occur on the same line as the command after the IF.  For
example:

  IF EXIST filename. (
      del filename.
  ) ELSE (
      echo filename. missing.
  )

The following would NOT work because the del command needs to be terminated
by a newline:

  IF EXIST filename. del filename. ELSE echo filename. missing

Nor would the following work, since the ELSE command must be on the same line
as the end of the IF command:

  IF EXIST filename. del filename.
  ELSE echo filename. missing

The following would work if you want it all on one line:

  IF EXIST filename. (del filename.) ELSE echo filename. missing

If Command Extensions are enabled IF changes as follows:

  IF [/I] string1 compare-op string2 command
  IF CMDEXTVERSION number command
  IF DEFINED variable command

where compare-op may be one of:

  EQU - equal
  NEQ - not equal
  LSS - less than
  LEQ - less than or equal
  GTR - greater than
  GEQ - greater than or equal

and the /I switch, if specified, says to do case insensitive string
compares.  The /I switch can also be used on the string1==string2 form
of IF.  These comparisons are generic, in that if both string1 and
string2 are both comprised of all numeric digits, then the strings are
converted to numbers and a numeric comparison is performed.

The CMDEXTVERSION conditional works just like ERRORLEVEL, except it is
comparing against an internal version number associated with the Command
Extensions.  The first version is 1.  It will be incremented by one when
significant enhancements are added to the Command Extensions.
CMDEXTVERSION conditional is never true when Command Extensions are
disabled.

The DEFINED conditional works just like EXISTS except it takes an
environment variable name and returns true if the environment variable
is defined.

%ERRORLEVEL% will expand into a string representation of
the current value of ERRORLEVEL, provided that there is not already
an environment variable with the name ERRORLEVEL, in which case you
will get its value instead.  After running a program, the following
illustrates ERRORLEVEL use:

  goto answer%ERRORLEVEL%
  :answer0
  echo Program had return code 0
  :answer1
  echo Program had return code 1

You can also using the numerical comparisons above:

  IF %ERRORLEVEL% LEQ 1 goto okay

%CMDCMDLINE% will expand into the original command line passed to
CMD.EXE prior to any processing by CMD.EXE, provided that there is not
already an environment variable with the name CMDCMDLINE, in which case
you will get its value instead.

%CMDEXTVERSION% will expand into a string representation of the
current value of CMDEXTVERSION, provided that there is not already
an environment variable with the name CMDEXTVERSION, in which case you
will get its value instead.


LABEL    Creates, changes, or deletes the volume label of a disk.
LABEL [drive:][label]
LABEL [/MP] [volume] [label]

drive:          Specifies the drive letter of a drive.
label           Specifies the label of the volume.
/MP             Specifies that the volume should be treated as a
                mount point or volume name.
volume          Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
                mount point, or volume name.  If volume name is specified,
                the /MP flag is unnecessary.


MD       Creates a directory.
MKDIR    Creates a directory.
MKDIR [drive:]path
MD [drive:]path

If Command Extensions are enabled MKDIR changes as follows:

MKDIR creates any intermediate directories in the path, if needed.
For example, assume \a does not exist then:

  mkdir \a\b\c\d

is the same as:

  mkdir \a
  chdir \a
  mkdir b
  chdir b
  mkdir c
  chdir c
  mkdir d

which is what you would have to type if extensions were disabled.


MODE     Configures a system device.

MORE     Displays output one screen at a time.

MOVE     Moves one or more files from one directory to another directory.
To move one or more files:
MOVE [/Y | /-Y] [drive:][path]filename1[,...] destination

To rename a directory:
MOVE [/Y | /-Y] [drive:][path]dirname1 dirname2

[drive:][path]filename1 Specifies the location and name of the file
                        or files you want to move.
destination             Specifies the new location of the file. Destination
                        can consist of a drive letter and colon, a
                        directory name, or a combination. If you are moving
                        only one file, you can also include a filename if
                        you want to rename the file when you move it.
[drive:][path]dirname1  Specifies the directory you want to rename.
dirname2                Specifies the new name of the directory.

/Y                      Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to
                        overwrite an existing destination file.
/-Y                     Causes prompting to confirm you want to overwrite
                        an existing destination file.

The switch /Y may be present in the COPYCMD environment variable.
This may be overridden with /-Y on the command line.  Default is
to prompt on overwrites unless MOVE command is being executed from
within a batch script.


PATH     Displays or sets a search path for executable files.
PATH [[drive:]path[;...][;%PATH%]
PATH ;

Type PATH ; to clear all search-path settings and direct cmd.exe to search
only in the current directory.
Type PATH without parameters to display the current path.
Including %PATH% in the new path setting causes the old path to be
appended to the new setting.


PAUSE    Suspends processing of a batch file and displays a message.
Suspends processing of a batch program and displays the message :
  Press any key to continue . . .


POPD     Restores the previous value of the current directory saved by PUSHD.
POPD


If Command Extensions are enabled the POPD command will delete
any temporary drive letter created by PUSHD when you POPD that
drive off the pushed directory stack.


PRINT    Prints a text file.
PRINT [/D:device] [[drive:][path]filename[...]]

 /D:device   Specifies a print device.


PROMPT   Changes the Windows command prompt.
PROMPT [text]

text    Specifies a new command prompt.

Prompt can be made up of normal characters and the following special codes:

$A   & (Ampersand)
$B   | (pipe)
$C   ( (Left parenthesis)
$D   Current date
$E   Escape code (ASCII code 27)
$F   ) (Right parenthesis)
$G   > (greater-than sign)
$H   Backspace (erases previous character)
$L   < (less-than sign)   $N   Current drive   $P   Current drive and path   $Q   = (equal sign)   $S     (space)   $T   Current time   $V   Windows XP version number   $_   Carriage return and linefeed   $$   $ (dollar sign)  If Command Extensions are enabled the PROMPT command supports the following additional formatting characters:    $+   zero or more plus sign (+) characters depending upon the        depth of the PUSHD directory stack, one character for each        level pushed.    $M   Displays the remote name associated with the current drive        letter or the empty string if current drive is not a network        drive. 


PUSHD    Saves the current directory then changes it.
Stores the current directory for use by the POPD command, then
changes to the specified directory.

PUSHD [path | ..]

path        Specifies the directory to make the current directory.

If Command Extensions are enabled the PUSHD command accepts
network paths in addition to the normal drive letter and path.
If a network path is specified, PUSHD will create a temporary
drive letter that points to that specified network resource and
then change the current drive and directory, using the newly
defined drive letter.  Temporary drive letters are allocated from
Z: on down, using the first unused drive letter found.


RD       Removes a directory.
RMDIR    Removes a directory.
RMDIR [/S] [/Q] [drive:]path
RD [/S] [/Q] [drive:]path

  /S      Removes all directories and files in the specified directory
          in addition to the directory itself.  Used to remove a directory
          tree.

  /Q      Quiet mode, do not ask if ok to remove a directory tree with /S


RECOVER  Recovers readable information from a bad or defective disk.
RECOVER [drive:][path]filename
Consult the online Command Reference in Windows XP Help
before using the RECOVER command.


REM      Records comments (remarks) in batch files or CONFIG.SYS.
REM [comment]


REN      Renames a file or files.
RENAME   Renames a file or files.
RENAME [drive:][path]filename1 filename2.
REN [drive:][path]filename1 filename2.

Note that you cannot specify a new drive or path for your destination file.


REPLACE  Replaces files.


SET      Displays, sets, or removes Windows environment variables.
SET [variable=[string]]

variable  Specifies the environment-variable name.
string    Specifies a series of characters to assign to the variable.

Type SET without parameters to display the current environment variables.

If Command Extensions are enabled SET changes as follows:

SET command invoked with just a variable name, no equal sign or value
will display the value of all variables whose prefix matches the name
given to the SET command.  For example:

  SET P

would display all variables that begin with the letter 'P'

SET command will set the ERRORLEVEL to 1 if the variable name is not
found in the current environment.

SET command will not allow an equal sign to be part of the name of
a variable.

Two new switches have been added to the SET command:

  SET /A expression
  SET /P variable=[promptString]

The /A switch specifies that the string to the right of the equal sign
is a numerical expression that is evaluated.  The expression evaluator
is pretty simple and supports the following operations, in decreasing
order of precedence:

  ()                  - grouping
  ! ~ -               - unary operators
  * / %               - arithmetic operators
  + -                 - arithmetic operators
  << >>               - logical shift
  &                   - bitwise and
  ^                   - bitwise exclusive or
  |                   - bitwise or
  = *= /= %= += -=    - assignment
    &= ^= |= <<= >>=
  ,                   - expression separator

If you use any of the logical or modulus operators, you will need to
enclose the expression string in quotes.  Any non-numeric strings in the
expression are treated as environment variable names whose values are
converted to numbers before using them.  If an environment variable name
is specified but is not defined in the current environment, then a value
of zero is used.  This allows you to do arithmetic with environment
variable values without having to type all those % signs to get their
values.  If SET /A is executed from the command line outside of a
command script, then it displays the final value of the expression.  The
assignment operator requires an environment variable name to the left of
the assignment operator.  Numeric values are decimal numbers, unless
prefixed by 0x for hexadecimal numbers, and 0 for octal numbers.
So 0x12 is the same as 18 is the same as 022. Please note that the octal
notation can be confusing: 08 and 09 are not valid numbers because 8 and
9 are not valid octal digits.

The /P switch allows you to set the value of a variable to a line of input
entered by the user.  Displays the specified promptString before reading
the line of input.  The promptString can be empty.

Environment variable substitution has been enhanced as follows:

  %PATH:str1=str2%

would expand the PATH environment variable, substituting each occurrence
of "str1" in the expanded result with "str2".  "str2" can be the empty
string to effectively delete all occurrences of "str1" from the expanded
output.  "str1" can begin with an asterisk, in which case it will match
everything from the beginning of the expanded output to the first
occurrence of the remaining portion of str1.

May also specify substrings for an expansion.

  %PATH:~10,5%

would expand the PATH environment variable, and then use only the 5
characters that begin at the 11th (offset 10) character of the expanded
result.  If the length is not specified, then it defaults to the
remainder of the variable value.  If either number (offset or length) is
negative, then the number used is the length of the environment variable
value added to the offset or length specified.

  %PATH:~-10%

would extract the last 10 characters of the PATH variable.

  %PATH:~0,-2%

would extract all but the last 2 characters of the PATH variable.

Finally, support for delayed environment variable expansion has been
added.  This support is always disabled by default, but may be
enabled/disabled via the /V command line switch to CMD.EXE.  See CMD /?

Delayed environment variable expansion is useful for getting around
the limitations of the current expansion which happens when a line
of text is read, not when it is executed.  The following example
demonstrates the problem with immediate variable expansion:

  set VAR=before
  if "%VAR%" == "before" (
      set VAR=after
      if "%VAR%" == "after" @echo If you see this, it worked
  )

would never display the message, since the %VAR% in BOTH IF statements
is substituted when the first IF statement is read, since it logically
includes the body of the IF, which is a compound statement.  So the
IF inside the compound statement is really comparing "before" with
"after" which will never be equal.  Similarly, the following example
will not work as expected:

  set LIST=
  for %i in (*) do set LIST=%LIST% %i
  echo %LIST%

in that it will NOT build up a list of files in the current directory,
but instead will just set the LIST variable to the last file found.
Again, this is because the %LIST% is expanded just once when the
FOR statement is read, and at that time the LIST variable is empty.
So the actual FOR loop we are executing is:

  for %i in (*) do set LIST= %i

which just keeps setting LIST to the last file found.

Delayed environment variable expansion allows you to use a different
character (the exclamation mark) to expand environment variables at
execution time.  If delayed variable expansion is enabled, the above
examples could be written as follows to work as intended:

  set VAR=before
  if "%VAR%" == "before" (
      set VAR=after
      if "!VAR!" == "after" @echo If you see this, it worked
  )

  set LIST=
  for %i in (*) do set LIST=!LIST! %i
  echo %LIST%

If Command Extensions are enabled, then there are several dynamic
environment variables that can be expanded but which don't show up in
the list of variables displayed by SET.  These variable values are
computed dynamically each time the value of the variable is expanded.
If the user explicitly defines a variable with one of these names, then
that definition will override the dynamic one described below:

%CD% - expands to the current directory string.

%DATE% - expands to current date using same format as DATE command.

%TIME% - expands to current time using same format as TIME command.

%RANDOM% - expands to a random decimal number between 0 and 32767.

%ERRORLEVEL% - expands to the current ERRORLEVEL value

%CMDEXTVERSION% - expands to the current Command Processor Extensions
  version number.

%CMDCMDLINE% - expands to the original command line that invoked the
  Command Processor.


SETLOCAL Begins localization of environment changes in a batch file.
Begins localization of environment changes in a batch file.  Environment
changes made after SETLOCAL has been issued are local to the batch file.
ENDLOCAL must be issued to restore the previous settings.  When the end
of a batch script is reached, an implied ENDLOCAL is executed for any
outstanding SETLOCAL commands issued by that batch script.

SETLOCAL

If Command Extensions are enabled SETLOCAL changes as follows:

SETLOCAL batch command now accepts optional arguments:
      ENABLEEXTENSIONS / DISABLEEXTENSIONS
          enable or disable command processor extensions.  See
          CMD /? for details.
      ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION / DISABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION
          enable or disable delayed environment variable
          expansion.  See SET /? for details.
These modifications last until the matching ENDLOCAL command,
regardless of their setting prior to the SETLOCAL command.

The SETLOCAL command will set the ERRORLEVEL value if given
an argument.  It will be zero if one of the two valid arguments
is given and one otherwise.  You can use this in batch scripts
to determine if the extensions are available, using the following
technique:

  VERIFY OTHER 2>nul
  SETLOCAL ENABLEEXTENSIONS
  IF ERRORLEVEL 1 echo Unable to enable extensions

This works because on old versions of CMD.EXE, SETLOCAL does NOT
set the ERRORLEVEL value. The VERIFY command with a bad argument
initializes the ERRORLEVEL value to a non-zero value.


SHIFT    Shifts the position of replaceable parameters in batch files.
SHIFT [/n]

If Command Extensions are enabled the SHIFT command supports
the /n switch which tells the command to start shifting at the
nth argument, where n may be between zero and eight.  For example:

  SHIFT /2

would shift %3 to %2, %4 to %3, etc. and leave %0 and %1 unaffected.


SORT     Sorts input.
SORT [/R] [/+n] [/M kilobytes] [/L locale] [/REC recordbytes]
[[drive1:][path1]filename1] [/T [drive2:][path2]]
[/O [drive3:][path3]filename3]

/+n                         Specifies the character number, n, to
                            begin each comparison.  /+3 indicates that
                            each comparison should begin at the 3rd
                            character in each line.  Lines with fewer
                            than n characters collate before other lines.
                            By default comparisons start at the first
                            character in each line.
/L[OCALE] locale            Overrides the system default locale with
                            the specified one.  The ""C"" locale yields
                            the fastest collating sequence and is
                            currently the only alternative.  The sort
                            is always case insensitive.
/M[EMORY] kilobytes         Specifies amount of main memory to use for
                            the sort, in kilobytes.  The memory size is
                            always constrained to be a minimum of 160
                            kilobytes.  If the memory size is specified
                            the exact amount will be used for the sort,
                            regardless of how much main memory is
                            available.

                            The best performance is usually achieved by
                            not specifying a memory size.  By default the
                            sort will be done with one pass (no temporary
                            file) if it fits in the default maximum
                            memory size, otherwise the sort will be done
                            in two passes (with the partially sorted data
                            being stored in a temporary file) such that
                            the amounts of memory used for both the sort
                            and merge passes are equal.  The default
                            maximum memory size is 90% of available main
                            memory if both the input and output are
                            files, and 45% of main memory otherwise.
/REC[ORD_MAXIMUM] characters Specifies the maximum number of characters
                            in a record (default 4096, maximum 65535).
/R[EVERSE]                  Reverses the sort order; that is,
                            sorts Z to A, then 9 to 0.
[drive1:][path1]filename1   Specifies the file to be sorted.  If not
                            specified, the standard input is sorted.
                            Specifying the input file is faster than
                            redirecting the same file as standard input.
/T[EMPORARY]
  [drive2:][path2]          Specifies the path of the directory to hold
                            the sort's working storage, in case the data
                            does not fit in main memory.  The default is
                            to use the system temporary directory.
/O[UTPUT]
  [drive3:][path3]filename3 Specifies the file where the sorted input is
                            to be stored.  If not specified, the data is
                            written to the standard output.   Specifying
                            the output file is faster than redirecting

              This means that the window will remain after the command

If Command Extensions are enabled, external command invocation
through the command line or the START command changes as follows:

non-executable files may be invoked through their file association just
  by typing the name of the file as a command.  (e.g.  WORD.DOC would
  launch the application associated with the .DOC file extension).
  See the ASSOC and FTYPE commands for how to create these
  associations from within a command script.

When executing an application that is a 32-bit GUI application, CMD.EXE
  does not wait for the application to terminate before returning to
  the command prompt.  This new behavior does NOT occur if executing
  within a command script.

When executing a command line whose first token is the string "CMD "
  without an extension or path qualifier, then "CMD" is replaced with
  the value of the COMSPEC variable.  This prevents picking up CMD.EXE
  from the current directory.

When executing a command line whose first token does NOT contain an
  extension, then CMD.EXE uses the value of the PATHEXT
  environment variable to determine which extensions to look for
  and in what order.  The default value for the PATHEXT variable
  is:

      .COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD

  Notice the syntax is the same as the PATH variable, with
  semicolons separating the different elements.

When searching for an executable, if there is no match on any extension,
then looks to see if the name matches a directory name.  If it does, the
START command launches the Explorer on that path.  If done from the
command line, it is the equivalent to doing a CD /D to that path.

Who were The Three Investigators?

The Three Investigators was an American juvenile detective book series first published as "Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators." It was created by Robert Arthur, Jr., who believed using a famous figure like movie director Hitchcock would attract attention. Random House, which is owned by Bertelsmann AG, is the U.S. publisher and still holds some of the rights to the books. Other rights are held by the heirs to Robert Arthur, Jr. and the German publisher, Kosmos. The Three Investigators are Jupiter Jones, Pete Crenshaw, and Bob Andrews.

Most of the mysteries involved investigation of baffling phenomena (e.g., an ancient Egyptian mummy that whispered and a human skull that talked).

Main Characters of The Three Investigators

1. Jupiter Jones, First Investigator - A former child actor, Jupiter is intelligent, stocky, and has a remarkable memory and deductive skills. Jupiter is an orphan who lives with Uncle Titus Jones and Aunt Mathilda, who run a salvage business. Jupiter is not exactly fit, and a bit plump. He goes by the nickname "Jupe."
2. Pete Crenshaw, Second Investigator - Pete is an athletic youth who dislikes dangerous situations but is nonetheless reliable as the "action member" of the team. Pete loves and cares for animals. His father is a special effects man in Hollywood.
3. Robert "Bob" Andrews, Records and Research - Bob is studious, meticulous, and wears glasses. Early in the series he wore leg braces because of an accident he had, relegating him to a more studious and less physical approach to investigation. Bob works in the local library part-time, suiting his role as data collector. His father is a newspaper man, and occasionally gives Bob helpful hints.

Supporting characters

1. Worthington - Worthington is a British chauffeur who drives the Three Investigators around in a Rolls Royce. As time passes, he also becomes a confidante and helper in the boys' investigations.
2. Alfred Hitchcock - Hitchcock was the boys' first patron who "introduced" their first 30 cases. In truth, the introductions were written by each book's author, not by Hitchcock himself. Random House paid Hitchcock for the use of his name. After the death of the movie mogul in 1980, the Hitchcock estate asked for more money, and the publisher refused. The last Hitchcock book was The Secret of Shark Reef. From then on, the boys' cases were introduced by the (fictional) famous detective-turned-writer Hector Sebastian.
3. Hector Sebastian - Sebastian took over the patron role beginning with The Mystery of the Scar-Faced Beggar (#31). Hitchcock's name and silhouette on the cover art of each book were then replaced by a stylized keyhole. Later, all of the Hitchcock volumes were reprinted with the keyhole and introductions by Hector Sebastian. The one exception was the reprint of the first story, The Secret of Terror Castle, which was "introduced" by the fictional Reginald Clarke, a movie producer. This was necessary since a movie producer (originally Hitchcock) was central to the plot, and Hector Sebastian did not fill that role.

Recurring adversaries

1. E. Skinner "Skinny" Norris - Skinny is a student from a well-to-do family in the school attended by the Three Investigators who was a legal resident of another state, and thus able to drive. He was constantly trying to outdo the Investigators, always failing in the end but not before causing the Investigators some trouble. In The Mystery of the Headless Horse, Skinny Norris dabbles in arson, a stunt that gets him shipped off to military school.
2. Hugenay - Hugenay is a French art thief who cleverly eluded police from Europe and had a professional respect for Jupiter Jones.

"The Three Investigators" agency

Jupiter, Pete, and Bob live in Rocky Beach, a fictional southern California coastal town described as 10 to 12 miles from Hollywood and 15 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Jupiter's family owns and operates the Jones Salvage Yard ("the Yard"), where the team's headquarters is hidden in an old trailer, which itself is hidden amid the "junk." There are several ingenious secret entrances (ie. Tunnel Two, Door Four...etc). The trailer's equipment includes a telephone, a darkroom, a filing cabinet, and a workshop in which Jupiter assembles devices, mostly from discarded items found in the junk yard, which help the Investigators in their detective work. The team often has to pay for what they take by working for Aunt Mathilda, a hard taskmaster who believes "idle" boys should be put to work.

Jupiter has designed a business card to intrigue their potential clients, memorable to readers particularly for its three question marks. These potential clients often ask what the question marks stand for, giving Jupiter an opening to impress them with his explanation that they are "symbolical of questions to be answered, mysteries to be solved." The boys' patrons usually did no more than introduce them to cases, meet again with them at the end of a particular adventure, and sometimes refer them to specialists such as a scholar on studies of the supernatural. At no point is it ever suggested that the patrons provided the Investigators funding in their work.

The Three Investigators solve cases by doing research (Bob's speciality), active observation (Pete's speciality), and clever deduction (Jupiter's speciality). Though the boys are both younger and lack the resources and connections of fellow fictional detectives The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, they have found ways to compensate or ignore these handicaps. Though too young to drive, the Three Investigators soon acquire reliable transportation in the form of a Rolls Royce limousine driven by British chauffeur Worthington. Jupiter won the use of the limousine for "thirty days, of twenty-four hours each" after winning a promotional contest held by the rental agency, soon before beginning their investigation of The Secret of Terror Castle. Despite Jupe's argument that the wording "thirty days of twenty-four hours each" meant that the boys should have the use of the Rolls Royce for the equivalent of 30 full days (or 720 hours), the Rent-N-Ride Auto Agency briefly ended their use of the limo in The Mystery of the Fiery Eye. Fortunately, a grateful client arranged for the boys to have access to the car whenever they needed it. Nevertheless, although Worthington became a confidante and a supporter of the boys' work, the limo's use grew rare in later books.

After proving their reliability, the Investigators received a green card from Rocky Beach police chief Samuel Reynolds, which identified them as junior deputies cooperating with the Rocky Beach police. They used this credential occasionally to convince others they were serious detectives.

Plot elements

Each installment of the series would begin with an introduction by the current patron of the Three Investigators. The mystery would then begin, as the boys would be introduced to a case, investigate using their observation skills and wit, and eventually solve the case. However, in each book, there would usually be an instance in which one or more of the boys is threatened or captured, and the other boys, sometimes with the help of others, must rescue the Investigator in peril. For instance, in The Mystery of the Green Ghost, Bob and a friend (and later Pete) are captured while exploring a narrow cavern and taken to the headquarters of Mr. Won, the book's villain, a Chinese man who drinks powder from rare "Ghost Pearls" to prolong his life. Mr. Won convinces the boys to reveal the location of the ghost pearls which they had hidden and attempts to hypnotize them into leading the way to the hiding place. Jupiter is able to obtain the assistance of Chief Reynolds and other policemen to nab the wrongdoers and rescue his friends by intercepting a note with "???" written on it which Bob had composed as he had successfully avoided the hypnosis.

Though the books were initially published in 1964 and thus computers and cell phones were not available to the Three Investigators in their early days, the technology and plots evolved as time passed. Reflecting trends in U.S. society, there were references to the growing public interest in the supernatural, such as seances in two books published in the 1970s. Awareness of ecology showed in The Mystery of the Sinister Scarecrow (1979), UFOs in The Mystery of the Blazing Cliffs (1981), protection of whales in The Mystery of the Kidnapped Whale (1983), and the dangers of toxic waste in Rough Stuff (1989). One of the first novels ever published that revolved around a computer virus was Fatal Error (1990).

Publishing History

The original series ran from 1964 to 1987 and comprised 43 books. Books number 1 to 9 and 11 were written by the creator, Robert Arthur, who also sketched out ideas for a few of the other stories. Arthur had been an editor for several Hitchcock book collections. The other authors were William Arden (Dennis Lynds), Nick West (Kin Platt), M(ary). V(irginia). Carey, and Marc Brandel (born Marcus Beresford). All of the authors wrote their own introductions and epilogues, which purportedly were dictated by Hitchcock.

In the original series, the specific ages of the investigators were never revealed, but context indicates that they were likely 13 or 14 years old. They were not old enough to drive, but were said to be just a few years younger than their nemesis Skinny Norris, who had a driver's license. On one occasion it was mentioned that Pete was on the high school wrestling team.

The investigators were typically introduced into a mystery through a client or by accidentally stumbling upon something unusual. The boys encountered baffling, sometimes misleading clues and danger before finally solving the crime. A major strength of the series was that the boys had to work to find and understand clues, unlike other contemporary series in which serendipity and coincidence played a frequent role. The last chapter of each book was an epilogue in which the investigators sat with Alfred Hitchcock (and later, Hector Sebastian), reviewing the mystery and revealing the deductions through the clues shown earlier in the book.

In 1989, Random House revamped the series, calling it The 3 Investigators — Crimebusters Series. The investigators were 17 years old, could drive, and were far more independent. The stories continued to contain an abundance of detecting but with the addition of more action. The series was well received but was halted in 1990 when legal issues between Random House and the heirs to the Arthur estate could not be resolved. By 2005, the disagreements were still not settled.

Eleven novels were published in the Crime Busters series, which was launched by one of the series' favorite authors -- William Arden (pseudonym of Dennis Lynds, who wrote the Dan Fortune mystery series for adults under the pen name of Michael Collins). The other authors were Megan Stine and husband H. William Stine, G.H. Stone (Gayle Lynds), William MacCay, Marc Brandel, and Peter Lerangis.

Random House has reprinted several of the original books in two paperback reprint series, partly to assure their legal rights.

International Publishing

The Three Investigators books have always been very popular in Germany. They are known there as the "Die drei ???" (Die drei Fragezeichen) meaning "The Three Question Marks". While American authors' novels in the series continue to be published there, German writers have added more, contributing about six new ones a year with the count being up to 124 episodes in summer 2008. None of the German books have been published in the United States, although there are by far more German than U.S. titles by now. Taped readings (radioplays) of the novels are special favorites in Germany. Many fans listened to them as children and rediscovered them as grownups. When the actors, who have been narrating the plays since 1979, toured the country, entire stadiums in major cities like Hamburg were packed.

Sixty-one original stories (including 'Crimebusters') have been published in Poland (by SIEDMIOROG), where they are still very popular. The books are also very popular among kids and grownups in Slovakia where the books are published by MLADE LETA.

In Italy, the Three Investigators novels have been published in paperback by Mondadori in the 1970s and 1980s within their "Giallo per ragazzi" series that included Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and other juvenile sleuths' adventures. The cover author for the Three Investigators books was always Alfred Hitchcock, whereas the inner copyright notice correctly reported the real author (although saying "Text by ..."). No other publications of the novels is known.

In France, the original 9 books were published in the 70s by the Bibliothèque Verte collection of books for young readers under the title Trois Jeunes Détectives (3 young investigators). In that version Jupiter was rechristened as Hannibal, nicknamed as "Babal". As in Italy, Hitchcock was touted as sole author.

In 2003 a Three Investigators movie was announced. If it is successful, the producers have said they will make more, since they have projected a series. The first is The Secret of Skeleton Island,[1] which was released in Europe in 2007 and is scheduled for release in the U.S. in 2008.

New English-language Three Investigators titles were released in 2005 for the first time since 1990. The German 'American-English' series saw the release of Poisoned E-Mail and The Curse Of The Cell Phone. As of May 2008, a total of seven German stories have been translated and published in this format, with an eighth title due for publication in October.

Collecting The Three Investigators

A complete set of the Three Investigators is not easy to locate, especially in hardback, and can be quite expensive. As the series continued, the books went through several format changes, from matte finish covers, to glossy covers, to different endpapers.

Beginning with book #29 (Secret of the Sinister Scarecrow) and continuing through book #43 (The Mystery of the Cranky Collector), hardcover editions of the books were only released to libraries (Gibraltar Library Binding); therefore, hardcover copies of books 29 through 43 are typically found in poor condition, and paperback copies are easier to locate. Interested collectors should look for books #1 through #30 that state the series title as: Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators, rather than just Three Investigators.

Those without the Hitchcock name are editions that were rewritten after Hitchcock's death in 1980, replacing Hitchcock with Hector Sebastian. These are easier to find but only have value as reading editions. Additionally, these editions have been edited and rewritten from the original.

tahu apakah karena Kapolda-nya yang baru, atau karena mereka mengejar Standar

Tulisan ini sebenarnya ditulis dengan niat untuk membantu murid-murid SD saya untuk membuat akun email di Gmail. Merupakan bagian dari pelajaran tambahan kegiatan ekstrakurikuler Teknologi Informasi dan Komunikasi. Namun bila anda belum memiliki sebuah akun email, mudah-mudahan tulisan ini bisa bermanfaat.

Apakah email itu?

Merupakan kependekan dari Electronic Mail atau Surat Elektronik. Surat elektronik dikirim dengan menggunakan perangkat komputer melalui saluran kabel telepon dan/atau gelombang listrik ke komputer tujuan. Tukang posnya adalah POP3 atau Post Office Protocol generasi ketiga yang telah terintegrasi dan menjadi standar dalam jaringan internet. Dalam hitungan detik, email yang dikirim sampai ke komputer tujuan yang mungkin berada di belahan dunia lain.

Apakah Gmail itu?

Gmail, kependekan dari GoogleMail, merupakan layanan gratis yang secara baik hati disediakan oleh Google.com untuk menampung dan mengirim email. Google secara dermawan memberikan lebih dari 6 GB dari harddisk di servernya untuk kita gunakan. Mengapa disebut dermawan? Ruang sebesar 6GB itu sangat besar untuk menampung email. Andai rata-rata sebuah email berisi teks biasa, tanpa gambar, berukuran 1 KB, maka Gmail dapat menampung sekitar 6.000.000 buah email. Bayangkan kalau sebuah email itu berukuran selembar kertas A4 atau Folio, 6.000.000 email berarti 6.000.000 lembar kertas, atau sama dangan 12.000 rim kertas, bila sebuah mobil pickup bisa menampung 500 rim kertas, maka dibutuhkan 24 mobil pickup sekaligus untuk mengangkut email yang ada di kotak pos kita di Gmail. Bayangkan!. Cukup dengan urusan matematis tadi, kita kembali ke lap...top. Jadi inilah salah satu alasan mengapa penulis lebih menyukai Gmail, dibanding penyedia akun email lainnya.

Dimanakah Gmail?

Gmail dapat diakses melalui tautan ini : http://mail.google.com. Disana, kita bisa "log in" untuk masuk ke akun yang sudah kita buat, ataupun untuk mendaftar baru. Disebelah kanan atas layar GMail, terdapat pilihan untuk mengganti bahasa (Change Language) di halaman GMail, gantilah menjadi Bahasa Indonesia, atau bahasa lain yang membuat anda nyaman. Okey deh, langsung saja kita pada pokok tulisan kita, MEMBUAT AKUN EMAIL di GMAIL. Berikut ini adalah langkah-langkahnya.

Cara Membuat Akun Email Baru di Gmail

Langkah Pertama : Pergi ke http://mail.google.com.

Kemudian akan terlihat halaman dengan gambar di bagian kanan seperti dibawah
ini :

Kemudian kliklah bagian yang telah dilingkari, yaitu "Signup ke Gmail"
untuk mulai melakukan proses registrasi.

Catatan :

Bagian atas yang berisi kolom Username dan Password digunakan bila anda telah memiliki akun Gmail.

Langkah Kedua :

Setelah tautan "Signup ke Gmail" diklik, anda akan menemukan halaman berisi formulir registrasi yang harus anda isi.

Berikut adalah keterangan dari bagian yang perlu Anda isi:

Nama Depan : Isikan dengan nama depan Anda

Nama Belakang : Isikan dengan nama belakang Anda

Nama Login yang Diinginkan : Isikan dengan nama email yang Anda mau.
Misalkan saya mendaftar dengan nama hikmat.s.permana, maka akun email baru
saya adalah hikmat.s.permana@gmail.com.

Nama email harus unik, karena itu Anda harus memeriksa apakah nama email yang Anda inginkan sudah dipakai oleh orang lain atau belum. Jadi setelah Anda mengetikan nama email yang Anda inginkan, tekan tombol "Cek Ketersediaan!". Jika ternyata Gmail menyatakan bahwa nama email Anda “tidak tersedia”, berarti nama email ini sudah digunakan oleh orang lain. Anda harus mengganti ke nama email lain. Anda dapat meneruskan bila nama email Anda belum pernah digunakan oleh orang lain (tersedia).

Pilih Sebuah Sandi : Masukan password untuk login ke email Anda.
Minimal 8 huruf atau angka.

Masukkan Kembali Sandi : Kembali ketikkan password Anda disini untuk
mencegah kesalahan ketik.

Ingat Saya di Komputer Ini : Merupakan layanan untuk login secara otomatis. Jangan dinyalakan apabila Anda sedang berada di warnet. Karena bila dinyalakan orang lain akan bisa mengakses email Anda secara otomatis.

Aktifkan Riwayat Web : Merupakan layanan untuk login secara otomatis juga, namun fungsinya lebih ke hasil searching di Google. Jangan dinyalakan apabila Anda sedang berada di warnet.

Pertanyaan Rahasia : Adalah pertanyaan yang akan ditanyakan oleh Gmail apabila Anda lupa password. Gunakan pertanyaan dengan jawaban yang Anda ingat. Misalnya apa binatang kesayangan saya?.

Jawaban : Adalah jawaban dari pertanyaan rahasia Anda. Anda harus menjawab dengan kata yang Anda masukan disini, barulah Gmail memberikan password Anda.

Email Sekunder : Alamat email Anda yang sedang aktif. Tidak harus diisi. Hanya digunakan pada bila Anda lupa password. Bila anda baru pertama kali mebuat email, tentunya anda tidak harus menjawab pertanyaan ini.

Lokasi : Lokasi Anda (pilih Indonesia).

Verifikasi Kata : ketikan huruf/angka pada gambar dibawahnya. Huruf-huruf tidak dibedakan kapital atau bukan.

Persyaratan Layanan : Anda dapat membaca aturan penggunaan Gmail disini

Langkah Ketiga :

Setelah mengisikan seluruh informasi yang diminta, tekan tombol “Saya Terima. Buat Akunku”. Selamat. Akun email baru Anda telah selesai dibuat. Klik link “Saya Siap. Tampilkan Akun Saya” di bagian sebelah kanan atas untuk masuk ke akun gmail baru Anda.

Windows 7 : Codename Translucency

Microsoft has been tiptoeing around Windows 7 since Windows Vista hit the market back in January 2007. Kevin Kutz, Director, Windows Client, came out back on February 13, 2007, just two weeks after Vista's general availability and stated that Microsoft was "not giving official guidance to the public yet about the next version of Windows, other than that we’re working on it. When we are ready, we will provide updates". At that time, Windows development was moving away from under the leadership of Jim Allchin, (Former) Co-President, Platforms & Services
Division, and under Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group.

Over 18 months later, Microsoft continues not to be ready to talk Windows 7. But transparent cracks are starting to be engineered in the official Sinofsky-branded translucency communication policy imposed for the successor of Windows Vista. The recently-launched Engineering Windows 7 initiative with the combined efforts of two senior engineering managers for the Windows 7 platform, Steven Sinofsky and Jon DeVaan, Senior Vice President, Windows Core Operating System Division is an illustrative example in this case, but not the only one. In this regard, the Windows 7 official End User License Agreement webpage has been live even before Engineering Windows 7, and continues to be accessible even though the EULA is yet to be published.

"Starting [on August 14, 2008], Steven Sinofsky (leading the Windows group), Jon DeVaan (leading Windows engineering) and the Windows Engineers are co-authors of a new blog that is specifically focusing on the coming wave of client technology in Windows 7. It is a treasure to get direct, 'from the horse’s mouth' information about what is reality and what is vapor when discussing Windows 7," revealed Joel Schoenberg, Microsoft's Windows Client Technical Specialist.

Windows Vista, or What Not to Do with Windows

As far as Sinofsky is concerned, Windows Vista is living proof of how not to manage the Windows project, including both the development and the communication aspects. First and foremost, Vista is a product associated with Microsoft's failure to live up to its initial promises on the project. Sinofsky's solution? Promise nothing at all. Revealing no details on Windows 7 ensures that the end result won't be a sure candidate for a Vista-repeat, even though the transition from one Windows client to another is stated to be evolutionary.

Dissociating Windows 7 from Windows Vista

The Engineering Windows 7 project is a move reinstating Microsoft's commitment to dissociating the next iteration of the Windows client from the version currently available. The debut of the austere E7 hotspot was not announced via the official Windows Vista mouthpiece, but via the Internet Explorer blog. And even if the core of Vista will survive, in an evolved form into Windows 7, Microsoft is taking the next major iteration of Windows as far as possible from what is available today, even after 180 million sold licenses. The most important aspect of this strategy is to control every Windows 7 detail released to the public.

In this regard, Sinofsky did touch the subject of why "Microsoft might be trying to accomplish by maintaining a little bit more control over the communication around Windows 7 (some might say that this is a significant understatement). We, as a team, definitely learned some lessons about 'disclosure' and how we can all too easily get ahead of ourselves in talking about features before our understanding of them is solid. Our intent with Windows 7 and the pre-release communication is to make sure that we have a reasonable degree of confidence in what we talk about when we do talk. Again, top of mind for us is the responsibility we feel to make sure we are not stressing priorities, churning resource allocations, or causing strategic confusion among the tens of thousands of partners and customers who care deeply and have much invested in the evolution of Windows".

"How We Are Making Windows 7," Sinofsky

Engineering Windows 7 is ultimately, from Microsoft's perspective, a medium designed to centralize discussion about how the company is building Windows 7. Still, while the Redmond giant is opening up on the next version of Windows, the fact is that each move is calculated and planned. Microsoft has already been connected with computer manufacturers, members of the software and hardware developing environment and enterprise customers. It seems that the end users are last and least on the company's priorities for feedback... But with E7, their turn has come, under the proverbial "better late than never" moment.

"Windows has all the challenges of every large scale software project - picking features, designing them, developing them, and delivering them with high quality. Windows has an added challenge of doing so for an extraordinarily diverse set of customers. As a team and as individuals on the team we continue to be humbled by this responsibility. We strongly believe that success for Windows 7 includes an open and honest, and two-way, discussion about how we balance all of these interests and deliver software on the scale of Windows," DeVaan and Sinofsky revealed via Engineering Windows 7.

Still, what is important to underline at this point in time is that Microsoft has not opened the doors on Windows 7. The project will continue to remain largely translucent, with only the set-in-stone Windows 7 details being released to the public. At the start of this month, leaked Windows 7 information got through the translucent filters and was posted on MSDN. However, the info on Windows 7 Theme Files, Gallery, Packs and Wallpaper Slideshow was removed promptly, just as it made its way to the public. It is bound that this strategy will continue... even with E7.

"Related to disclosure is the idea of how we make sure not to set expectations around the release that end up disappointing you - features that don’t make it, claims that don’t stick, or support we don’t provide. Starting from the first days of developing Windows 7, we have committed as a team to 'promise and deliver'. That’s our goal - share with you what we’re going to get done, why we’re doing it, and deliver it with high quality and on time," DeVaan and Sinofsky added.

Engineering Every Aspect of Windows 7

It is obvious that Sinofsky has stricken a cord with the group building Windows, with leaks on Windows 7 down to a minimum. The reception that Windows Vista got contributed to the new under-promise and over-achieve strategy of the next version of the Windows operating system. With Vista, back when it was Longhorn, the amputation of various features initially advertised as part of the platform managed to reverberate past the development stage, well after the product hit the shelves. The same will not happen with Windows 7. As far as Vista's successor is concerned, nobody outside of the team hammering away at the operating system knows a single feature that was cut during development. This is bound to benefit Windows 7.

"It is quite understandable that media, analysts, developers, IT pros, general public and… Microsoft employees not in the engineering team are genuinely curious and interested to learn what’s coming in the upcoming next version of Windows. On the other hand though, given the harsh criticism that hit the team in the past for shipping products which did not meet customers expectations or their understanding of what was about to be released (not just in Microsoft but in the whole industry), it is quite understandable that there is a strong intent to ensure we don’t share details until they have reached "a certain level of concreteness," explained Paolo Barone, from the Microsoft Developer & Platform Evangelism team in the UK.

Still, E7 should be taken with a grain of salt. In the end, it is yet another example of Microsoft controlling every aspect of the Windows 7 project. Sinofsky is indeed indicating that more and more details will be made public, and that the Redmond company is gearing up for Windows 7 releases beyond simple information.

"If you ask me, I would not expect [E7] to be the place where announcements about new features and release schedule are made. What I believe this is going to be, is a sharing opportunity to discuss the complexity and challenges behind a large and complex project like the creation of the next version of Windows is," Barone stated.

The query [define:] will provide a definition of the words you enter after it, gathered from various online sources. The definition will be for the entire phrase entered (i.e., it will include all the words in the exact order you typed them).

stocks:

If you begin a query with the [stocks:] operator, Google will treat the rest of the query terms as stock ticker symbols, and will link to a page showing stock information for those symbols. For instance, [stocks: intc yhoo] will show information about Intel and Yahoo. (Note you must type the ticker symbols, not the company name.)

This functionality is also available if you search just on the stock symbols (e.g. [ intc yhoo ]) and then click on the "Show stock quotes" link on the results page.

Query Modifiers

site:		If you include [site:] in your query, Google will restrict the results to those websites in the given domain. * site:edu will search all site in edu top domain. Useful for researchers and college students while studying and writing for papers as site:edu will restrict search results to the educational sites!

filetype: You can directly use Google to search any type of files.

* filetype:ppt to search all PowerPoint presentation slides.
* filetype:pdf will search only pdf files! Good for searching ebooks.
* filetype:pdf site:edu will return all files with pdf extensions from edu domain. Useful to complete journals or study assignments!

inurl: To search something in URLs

* inurl:md5 will find keyword md5 in URLs.
* inurl:md5 filetype:java will return all java source files with md5 in their name or URL. How about using this to complete programming assignments in college!
Also try allinurl: operator which looks all keywords into URL only!

intitle: To search something in page title. Useful when searching a too common word.

* intitle:md5 will return all documents having md5 in their title.
* intitle:Hacking filetype:pdf will return all pdf files i.e. mostly ebooks and papers about hacking.

Also try allintitle: operator which looks all keywords into title only!

define: To use Google search as dictionary. There are other dedicated dictionary services but none of them is as clean and fast as Google.

* define:hacker will show meanings of hacker.
* define:network security will return meaning of network security.
* Note: Do not type anything before define: or combine it with other operators!

OR - To combine results of multiple searches! By default Google performs ANDing on keywords we use while searching. But sometimes explicit OR can help more.

* filetype:pdf OR filetype:doc will search for pdf as well as doc files. This will help you complete your journals
* site:en.wikipedia.org OR site:howstuffworks.com will restrict search to Wikipedia English and How Stuff Works site!
* Note OR must be in capital and it doesn’t have colon after it!

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

The name PageRank is a trademark of Google. The PageRank process has been patented (U.S. Patent 6,285,999 ). The patent is not assigned to Google but to Stanford University.

Google staff describe Page Rank as "PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important".

In other words, a PageRank results from a "ballot" among all the other pages on the World Wide Web about how important a page is. A hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support. The PageRank of a page is defined recursively and depends on the number and PageRank metric of all pages that link to it ("incoming links"). A page that is linked to by many pages with high PageRank receives a high rank itself. If there are no links to a web page there is no support for that page.

Google assigns a numeric weighting from 0-10 for each webpage on the Internet; this PageRank denotes a site’s importance in the eyes of Google. The PageRank is derived from a theoretical probability value on a logarithmic scale like the Richter Scale. The PageRank of a particular page is roughly based upon the quantity of inbound links as well as the PageRank of the pages providing the links. It is known that other factors, e.g. relevance of search words on the page and actual visits to the page reported by the Google toolbar also influence the PageRank. In order to prevent manipulation, spoofing and spamdexing, Google provides no specific details about how other factors influence PageRank.

Numerous academic papers concerning PageRank have been published since Page and Brin's original paper. In practice, the PageRank concept has proven to be vulnerable to manipulation, and extensive research has been devoted to identifying falsely inflated PageRank and ways to ignore links from documents with falsely inflated PageRank.

By following a few simple guidelines, you can maintain your computer and keep it running smoothly. This article discusses how to use the tools available in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows Vista to more efficiently maintain your computer and safeguard your privacy when you're online.

Free up disk space
By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.

Use Disk Cleanup to:
• Remove temporary Internet files.
• Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).
• Empty the Recycle Bin.
• Remove Windows temporary files.
• Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.
• Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

To use Disk Cleanup

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.
2. In the Disk Cleanup for dialog box, scroll through the content of the Files to delete list.
Choose the files that you want to delete.
3. Clear the check boxes for files that you don't want to delete, and then click OK.
4. When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the specified files, click Yes.

After a few minutes, the process completes and the Disk Cleanup dialog box closes, leaving your computer cleaner and performing better.

Speed up access to data
Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.

Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.

When to run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals—monthly is optimal—there are other times you should run it too, such as when:

• You add a large number of files.
• Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.
• You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

To use Disk Defragmenter:

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
Click Analyze to start the Disk Defragmenter.
2. In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives that you want to defragment, and then click the Analyze button. After the disk is analyzed, a dialog box appears, letting you know whether you should defragment the analyzed drives.

Tip: You should analyze a volume before defragmenting it to get an estimate of how long the defragmentation process will take.

3. To defragment the selected drive or drives, click the Defragment button. Note: In Windows Vista, there is no graphical user interface to demonstrate the progress—but your hard drive is still being defragmented.

After the defragmentation is complete, Disk Defragmenter displays the results.

4. To display detailed information about the defragmented disk or partition, click View Report.
5. To close the View Report dialog box, click Close.
6. To close the Disk Defragmenter utility, click the Close button on the title bar of the window.

Detect and repair disk errors
In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.

As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult, or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.

If you use your computer daily, you should run this utility once a week to help prevent data loss.

To run the Error Checking utility:

1. Close all open files.
2. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
3. In the My Computer window, right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.
4. In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.
5. Click the Check Now button.
6. In the Check Disk dialog box, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
7. If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them.

Tip: Only select the "Automatically fix file system errors" check box if you think that your disk contains bad sectors.

Protect your computer against spyware
Spyware collects personal information without letting you know and without asking for permission. From the Web sites you visit to usernames and passwords, spyware can put you and your confidential information at risk. In addition to privacy concerns, spyware can hamper your computer's performance. To combat spyware, you might want to consider using Microsoft Windows Defender, which is included in Windows Vista, and is available as a free download for Microsoft XP SP2. Alternatively, there are other free anti-spyware software programs available.

Stop programs from starting when Windows XP starts.
The more programs that are running in the background, the slower Windows XP will be running. To stop the programs from running when Windows starts, click “Start->Run” and then type “msconfig.exe” in the Run dialog. Click the “Startup” tab at the top, then uncheck any programs that you don’t want to start. If you change your mind, then you can simply re-check the checkbox and the programs will once again start with Windows. Once you have deselected the programs, click “OK” and then the “Restart” button to restart your computer.

Modify the Windows XP performance settings.
Windows XP allows you to modify certain settings to help increase performance. To access these settings, click “Start » Control Panel » System.” Click the “Advanced” tab, and then under the “Performance” section, click the “Settings” button. Within the “Visual Effects” tab, select the “Adjust for best performance” option. Click the “OK” button to close the window, and then “OK” again to close the “System Properties.”

Change to the classic Windows theme.
The Windows XP theme takes more resources than the classic gray-chiseled look. To get the last bit of performance, change to the classic look. To do this, right-click any empty area on the desktop and then select “Properties.” Under the “Themes” tab, select the “Windows Classic” option from the list and click “OK.” The classic Windows look should now be displayed instead of the Windows XP look.

Run anti-virus and anti-spyware applications.
Viruses and spyware can reduce the performance of your computer, or even worse, prevent it from booting. Ensure that you have anti-virus and anti-spyware applications installed and updated. Run the scans from both applications at least once a week to ensure your computer is clean.

Disconnect USB devices you aren’t using.
When Windows starts, it must load all the drivers for the devices connected to your computer. If you have many devices connected to the USB ports, such as printers, scanners, cameras and hard drives that you don’t use on a regular basis, disconnect them. You can reconnect them when you use them. Disconnecting them when they are not in use will allow Windows to load the drivers only when needed.

Stop unneeded services from running.
This tip is for the more experienced computer user. Windows XP has many services that are loaded when it starts. Some of these services are not needed and so can be stopped. To modify the services, right-click “My Computer” on your desktop and select “Manage.” Expand the “Services and Applications” item on the left and then click “Services.” A list of the services installed on your computer is shown on the right. Stop the services that are not needed. Remember, if you are unsure, then don’t stop any of the services.

Modify registry settings for desktop delay.
This will make your system faster since it will remove the delay time for showing Windows content. To begin, type on the Run command, “regedit.” When you are on the registry, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANNEL\DESKTOP. Look for the word “MenuShowDelay” and double click on it! Change its default value into “5?. That’s it for the desktop registry settings.

Modify registry settings for start-up delay.
This will again make your windows startup faster by minimizing the delay time for the start-up delay of your windows XP. To begin, type again on the Run command, “regedit.” When you are on the registry, navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\CONTENTINDEX.” Next, look for the name “StartupDelay” and change its base to “Decimal” and its default value data to 40000. Close all opened applications and restart your computer.

Increase download speeds by opening TCP port 6881, the "dedicated lane" for torrent file downloads.

If you are a Bit Torrent downloader, you know what slow download speeds are like...frustrating and annoying, to say the least. Instead of getting your music or movie within a couple of hours, your software predicts it will take 2 to 4 days.

Now, while many of the speed factors involved are out of your control, there is at least one thing you can do at your receiving end to improve this speed. It is called "Port Forwarding", or "opening your specific TCP ports". This is how it works.

1) That blue or green network cable coming out of your computer/modem/router is actually a busy highway comprised of 65,536 tiny electronic lanes (yes, over sixty-five thousand little lanes for your electrons). Each lane is called a "port", and each port is designed to allow only specific types of information through. Many ports are assigned in a semi-standardized way. Here are some example port assignments:

HTML pages: port 80
FTP file transferring: port 21
World of Warcraft: port 3724
POP3 email: port 110
MSN Messenger: port 6901 and ports 6891-6900
Everquest: port 1024
Bit Torrents: port 6881

2) Bit torrents, by default, first look for port 6881 to enter/exit your computer. If port 6881 is closed for whatever reason, torrents then go to port 6882, then 6883, and so on, until it eventually tries port 6999 before giving up.

3) Every ISP, and every home router, can optionally block any of these ports with the intention of preventing hackers and controlling the network.

4) If you tell your own personal router and firewall at home to open (aka "forward") port 6881 and port 6882, then your bit torrents will find their way into your computer that much faster. Sometimes up to 5x faster.

Yes, opening ports does increase the possibility of getting hacked by unwanted bad guys, but there are means to reduce that threat while still getting fast torrent download speeds.
