Come enjoy a day at Hillcrest while you get to know your new school as well as students from all of our feeder schools. This is a great way to become familiar with the campus and the typical school day. Activities include games, open gym time, and a campus tour. STEM Students of the Year

Hillcrest Middle is a STEM school (Science, Technology, and Engineering, and Math), and that means our program is very important on campus and in our community. Students learn how to design, build, and share their ideas with others. They learn how to THINK!

This is the first year that the Hillcrest STEM program is awarding its STEM Student of the Year Awards. For 8th grade, this year's award goes to two students who both represent Hillcrest's STEM program in the best possible way. Their helpfulness and eagerness to organize and tackle problems is very evident. Those students are Mandy Spartz and Ryan Kiedrowski.

Our 7th grade Hillcrest STEM Student of the Year award goes to Samantha Stewart. She has been outstanding in her effort and applied knowledge of the design process. Samantha is also one of the brightest, young engineers to have completed the Hillcrest STEM program.

Congratulations to Mandy, Ryan, and Samantha. Their efforts this year have been an inspiration to not only other students, but to their Hillcrest STEM teacher, Mr. Herold.

The 8th Grade Dance is called Hollywood Nights" and will be held on Friday, May 17th from 6PM-8PM in the cafeteria. Admission and refreshments are FREE. Souvenir photos may be bought for $5. Summer Programs at Hillcrest

Hillcrest is excited to offer enriching and rewarding summer programs. These programs are open to students presently 6th - 8th grades. There are currently two Jump Start Programs. One program is for current 6th graders going into 7th grade. The purpose of this program is to ease the transition into the middle school and brush up on skills. The second program is for current 7th and 8th graders going into either 8th or 9th grade. This program is for students who passed their grade, but would like to improve their skills to ensure success in the next grade. Both programs also focus on setting goals and being organized.

In addition, there are two classes that are held right after the Jump Start program. Cooking and Summer S.T.E.M. are available to complete the day.

The Hillcrest annual Spring Fling event is April 10th and will be a ton of fun. There will be a book fair in the media center, the HMS and District jazz bands, Jamba Juice, robotics and art displays, a talent show, and more. Come out with your family and enjoy. The cafeteria will also be selling grilled hamburgers! The event is from 4-6PM and families are encouraged to attend. The 6th Grade Orientation will immediately follow at 6PM.

I nominate Mrs. Bonnie Walker for her huge amount of support in making the recent STEM girls field trip a success. Despite a number of obstacles, she offered to help in many ways. Without Mrs. Bonnie Walker, the trip would never have happened and the students would never have gained the knowledge and experiences they earned on the trip.

DVEF Space Camp 2013

The Deer Valley Education Foundation is excited to once again offer your 7th and 8th grade students an opportunity to apply for a chance to attend Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama this summer!

The Deer Valley Education Foundation Space Academy Program will provide winning DVUSD 7th or 8th grade students with tuition and travel expenses to attend Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama during the summer of 2013. Runners-up will each be awarded a Barnes & Noble gift card. The application will be posted on the DVEF website at www.dvef.org

Interested 7th or 8th grade DVUSD students must submit an essay outlining "Why I Want to Attend Space Academy." Essays must be the student’s original work and may be typed or hand written. Each essay MUST be accompanied by the cover page signed in the appropriate places and a letter of recommendation written by a current or past science or math teacher.

Applications must be completed and submitted to DVEF (at the D.O.) by April 5th, 2013. Essays will be judged by an independent panel to become a finalist for a DVEF Space Academy scholarship.

Ridge Hosts Night for 6th/7th Graders

Mountain Ridge High School is hosting its first ever “High School Night” for 6th and 7th graders and their parents on March 18th at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. Students and families will meet the mascots, teachers, counselors and learn about our signature programs and ways for students to get involved in high school. It’s never too early to plan for a successful transition to high school.
