Conrad Wins Humanitarian of the Year

The highlight video shown at the final match of the regular season when Conrad was named Team Humanitarian of the Year.

For the second time this season, Jimmy Conrad has received a Humanitarian of the Year honor. This time, it's the League-wide U.S. Soccer Foundation/MLS W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Year. Conrad is sharing the honor with Logan Pause of Chicago, the first time the honor has been shared. Check out details from the press release:

"It's an incredible honor to be thought about in these terms,” Conrad said, “and I know my parents will be very proud of me."

“The best gift someone can give is themselves and their time,” Jennifer Currier, Midwest Regional Walk Director for Autism Speaks said. “Jimmy is busy in the community, spreading awareness about Autism and promoting healthy activity among children. He honestly cares about the kids and helps them have fun at clinics and other events.”

Conrad, who hails from Temple City, Calif., is an 11-year MLS veteran, five-time MLS All-Star and former MLS Defender of the Year. He continues to be active in philanthropic efforts throughout the Kansas City area and is being recognized as an exemplary role model within the community for his involvement with local schools, youth organizations and MLS W.O.R.K.S. initiatives. Conrad regularly speaks with students at local schools about teamwork and the importance of setting goals in presentations that he designed. Conrad was recently named to the Board of Directors for the Kansas City Zoo.

For a second consecutive year, Conrad served as a spokesperson for Athletes Against Autism and the Child Protection Center, actively partaking in efforts to raise money and awareness for the organizations. This season he participated in an appearance at the Kick It 3v3 Championships to raise awareness for the UN Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, and also raised funds for the campaign locally through autograph sessions in Kansas City.

Conrad also receives support for his philanthropic efforts from his wife, Lyndsey. While he is busy supporting community groups, Lyndsey, serves as the President of the Kansas City Wizards Wives Club. Their biggest project this season was a school supply drive at CommunityAmerica Ballpark called “Stuff the Bus.” As part of the event, Conrad and his wife set up a soccer clinic for inner-city children with other MLS players. They donated school supplies collected during “Stuff the Bus” and spoke to the children about the importance of staying in school.

Conrad has won Team Humanitarian of the Year four times during his career, including three times for Kansas City. Conrad was first recognized with the award in 2002 while a member of the San Jose Earthquakes. Conrad has won the Kansas City award in both 2004, 2005 and 2009.

The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team continued their quest for the FIFA U-17 World Cup this morning with a Round of 16 match-up against Italy. Italy took a lead in the 29th minute through AC Milan's Giacomo Beretta. Follow the match at U.S. soccer's Twitter, ESPN360.com or the U.S. Soccer match tracker. We'll provide updates after the fact and through our Twitter page.

**Update** The U.S. scored after the break to tie the match at 1-1, but allowed a goal just minutes later and ended up losing 2-1.

Goal of the Year Nominees

Hartman Wins Save of the Week

Kansas City Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman received MLS Save of the Week honors for the final week of the 2009 MLS regular season for an outstanding save to deny D.C. United’s Ben Olsen. Hartman won two MLS Save of the Week awards on the season, taking home the honor in Week 11 and Week 32. Striker Josh Wolff was named MLS Player of the Week three times, and Kansas City players won MLS Save of the Week three times.

Hartman’s latest personal honor came through a fan vote at MLSnet.com for a save in last Saturday’s season-ending 2-2 tie with D.C. United. Hartman dove to stop a shot off the foot of Jaime Moreno, when Moreno’s attempt deflected off a defender and into the path of Olsen on the opposite side of goal. Hartman regained his footing quickly and dove across the face of goal, tipping Olsen’s volley attempt over the bar in the process. The save proved vital, as Kansas City equalized the game in second-half stoppage time to keep D.C. United out of the playoffs.

$5 Billion Stimulus? Yes Please

The USA Bid Committee today released a report that indicates brining the FIFA World Cup to the USA in 2018 or 2022 could pump $5 billion into the economy. The study indicates that between 5,000-8,000 new jobs would be created in each host city. Sounds pretty nice doesn't it. Read the full report here. Support the bid by visiting www.gousabid.com/kc. The analysis - completed by one of the world's leading international sports and entertainment attraction consulting firm - estimates that between 65,000 and 100,000 total new jobs would be created in the various host cities during the preparation for and operation of the tournament during the year of the event.

The findings indicate that the total economic impact projected for any host city ranges from approximately $400 million to $600 million at today's dollar value. That figure is based on 12 host cities staging five to six matches, along with ancillary venues such as the International Broadcast Center (IBC) in one city and FIFA Fan Fest(TM) in each city. The study also estimates 5,000 to 8,000 jobs would be created in each host city during the event's operation.

His acrobatic recovery to deny a rebound effort from Ben Olsen Saturday has him up for the MLS Save of the Week honor once again. He won the award in Week 11, but has 't captured the "trophy" since. The U.S. U-17s kick off the FIFA U-17 World Cup today against Spain at 1 p.m. CT on ESPNU, ESPN360.com and Galavision. Tune in to see how the next generation of U.S. players fares against European powerhouse Spain.

US Soccer also announced today that they will take on European qualifiers Slovakia November 14 in Bratislava. The game will come four days before a friendly in Denmark against another team already qualified from Europe. Time and TV for the Slovakia game have yet to be determined. The match in Denmark will kick off at 1:30 p.m. CT, with TV still TBD. Looking forward to the upcoming friendlies on European soil? Wizards Hold Food Drive Tomorrow

The Wizards and Harvesters will hold a canned-food drive outside all three gates Saturday as the Wizards host D.C. United. Fans who bring 3 cans or give a $3 donation will receive a Wizards linen bag, courtesy of M&I Bank. Supplies are limited, so arrive with your cans early! All attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods and show their support of the Kansas City community.

Harvesters will hold their Student Food Drive Kick-Off in a tailgate area outside Gate C. There will be a skit competition for local high school participants, with Kansas City Wizards players serving as judges. The team with the “Best Skit” at the tailgate will receive the opportunity to come down on the field pre-game to watch warm-ups and will receive recognition during pre-match ceremonies.
