PINK FLOYD plays at Paris Theatre, London, England

MOUNTAIN and J. GEILS BAND are at St. Johns University, Flushing, NY, USA

YES is live in Wolverhampton, England

FRANK ZAPPA does Carnegie Hall

PROCOL HAREM is at Le Bataclan, Paris, France
(See it here!)

TOP SELLING SINGLES AND LP's FROM THIS PARTICULAR LIST

My memories of the early seventies is of when ROCK GROUPS WERE ROCK GROUPS.
They just didn't conquer the singles market which explains why The Osmond Brothers and brother Donny have the best selling 45's for the second list in a row.
(Don't believe me? Click Here!)

As far as Rock Groups go in the LP list, at least THE WHO are in there.

ALSO

JOAN BAEZ considers some gal named Dixie old
THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY all woke up in love at the same time
STEVIE WONDER located a person
TEN YEARS AFTER isn't happy with the state of the planet

YEAH, I REMEMBER THEM...

Pop-Tops, Fanny, Undisputed Truth

Here now is the entire Hills Department Store Top 40 Pops and 10 Best Selling LP's for October 11, 1971 -

Enjoy!
Rain Dance - The Guess Who

It's John Lennon's birthday today.
Due to the significance of this day in Rock and Roll history the usual Hills Top 40 Pops list will not be seen. It will be back the next post.

I really don't know where to begin on this one.

I grew up with The Beatles.
Was only seven years old when they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Saw that and they have been my favorite group to this day.

I still remember Christmas 1965.
One of the presents I opened was the Beatle's latest album "Help".
Have no recollection of any of the other presnts Santa brought me that day - that was one of those great moments I never forgot. (still have that LP.)

I loved all the Beatles but John was my favorite.

You knew he was the leader. His wit was sharp as a razor. He was cool.

Read his book "In His Own Write and A Spaniard In the Works". Totally Hilarious. Still have the book.

This was not just a great song writer with one of the greatest voices in rock and roll hiistory.

JOHN LENNON WAS AN ORIGINAL

He told us all that ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE.

He wanted us all to GIVE PEACE A CHANCE.

He wanted everyone to have a HAPPY CHRISTMAS.

He did do some off-the-wall things (Yoko, the Bed-In, protesting, etc.) but that was okay.
It was just John being John.

He "retired" for a couple years to be a "house-husband" and a daddy to son Sean.

It seemed like ages until...
he finally started recording again.

With the release of "Double Fantasy" John was back!

And we couldn't be happier.

Today, on October 9, he would have turned 74.

IMAGINE what could have been.

I miss him.

On this date:

One of the top movies was George Lucas' first movie "THX 1138".
I remember seeing that at the movie theater when it first came out and I hate to admit it but thought it was kind of boring.
Mr. Lucas came a long way.

The guests on the talk shows that day -
Merv Griffin had Clint Eastwood, Johnny Carson had Chuck Conners and Joe Frazier, Dick Cavett had Florence Henderson
(Dick was a nice guy.)

AS FOR THE MUSIC -

Rock and Roll is alive and well as The Partridge Family, Lynn Anderson and The Osmonds take the Top 3 spots in the singles category.

The Top 2 LP's also kick ass as the Partridge Family and The Carpenters come out on top.

ALSO

Creedence Clearwater Revival has been experiencing a dry spell.
Andy Williams does George Harrison.
Elvis Presley is missing some people.
Brewer and Shipley are catching a buzz.

Nothing really significant happened on this exact day that I could find.

There are a few different movies from the previous post (October 19, 1970).

Top Movies:

"When Moscow Laughs"
"Ryan's Daughter" starring: Robert Mitchum,
"Africa Erotica"
"The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" starring: Robert Stephens, Christopher Lee, Colin Blakely
"The Phantom Tollbooth" directed by Chuck Jones, starring Butch Patrick, Hans Conried, Mel Blanc
(Can't believe I never saw this one. We got the guys behind the classic Warner Brothers Bugs Bunny, Road Runner cartoons and Eddie Munster?)

Top Books:

I used to list the top books for this date.
Screw that.
They're still the same from the March 2, 1970 post and I seriously doubt if anyone out there cares.

AS FOR THE MUSIC -

The Partridge Family beats out The Jackson Five for top single.
Creedence Clearwater Revival hangs tough and shows The Carpenters who's number one for best selling album.

ALSO
