Summer Holidays 2026 last availabilty

We have two weeks left in cottages sleeping 4 over the school summer holidays 2026. Our cottages are a 10 minute drive from Bude or Widemouth Bay and a choice of beaches.

Swallow’s Nest sleeps up to 4 in a double and a bunk room. It is part of a barn conversion with a balcony overlooking the pool. Available week of 18 July. Now £1000 per week (previously £1100).

Pound cottage sleeps up to 4 in a double (kingsize bed) and a twin). Pound is a spacious modern cottage. Now £1270 for the week (previously £1410). Available week of 15 August only.

We also have cottages for two available during the summer holidays – Nook, Pear Tree and Stable. Availability throughout July and August – now 10% off any week booking between 25 July and 29 August.

May half term - Primrose cottage

Primrose cottage is available for May half term. Primrose sleeps 5 in two doubles and a single. It is part of a barn conversion with a balcony overlooking our swimming pool. Our cottages are a 10 minute drive from Bude or Widemouth Bay, great for surfing, rock pools and walks on the coastal path. There is plenty to do on site with our heated outdoor pool, tennis court, play area, games room and hot tub. Primrose is now £972 for the week (was £1080). Easter 2026

We are counting down to the Easter 2026 holidays and we have some availability left. Our comfortable self-catering cottages are about a 10 minute drive from both Bude and Widemouth Bay. There is plenty to do at Hilton Farm Holidays with a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, tennis court and games room on site.

Farmhouse – our Cornish Farmhouse is available from 11 April. Short breaks are available from £1440 for 3 nights, up to £2000 for a week – now with 10% off. October half term

Are you looking for a break over the October half term week? We have short breaks and longer stays available in our self catering cottages near Bude. Hilton Farm Holidays is a ten minute drive from Bude and a choice of beaches. We are in a peaceful, rural location, a great base for exploring North Cornwall and North Devon. Tintagel, Clovelly, Boscastle, Padstow, Port Isaac and Appledore are all within an hour’s drive. There is a play area and games room for kids, a hot tub and tennis court on site.

October half term availability

Our Farmhouse sleeps up to 11 in 5 bedrooms (two ensuite). It is a great space for groups of family or friends to get together with two living rooms and a separate dining room. Easter 2025 availability

Our comfortable cottages near Bude are available for short breaks or longer stays over the Easter 2025 holidays. With our heated outdoor pool, hot tub, play area, tennis court and games room on site there is plenty to do. Bude and a choice of beaches are within a 10 minute drive. Further afield, visitors can explore Padstow, Clovelly, Boscastle, Tintagel, St Nectan’s Glen and Appledore, which are all an easy drive away.

Our heated outdoor pool is popular with children and grown ups. A sun trap on a good day!

Explore the seaside town of Bude. Try out surfing at Summerleaze beach or nearby Widemouth Bay. There are plenty of local surf schools and boards to hire locally. Take a swim in Bude’s Sea Pool or try a pedalo or a rowing boat on the canal. Enjoy a walk with spectacular sea views along the coastal path.

Easter 2025 availability

Our Cornish Farmhouse sleeps up to 11 in 5 bedrooms. With two living rooms, a separate dining room and a private garden, there is plenty of space for family or friends to get together. From £1080 for a 3 night stay. Available until 17 April.

Parsons cottage is available 10-14 April. Parsons is a modern cottage for 7 with a private hot tub in the garden. From £690 for 3 nights.

Pound cottage sleeps 4 in a double and a twin. A modern cottage, all on one level, Pound has a patio outside, near to the play area. Available from 12 April, from £435 for 3 nights.

Badger cottage is available between 7th and 15th April. Badger is a barn conversion sleeping 6, with a balcony overlooking the pool. From £420 for 3 nights.

Food and drink!

Food and drink around Bude – there are lots of great places to eat in Bude and the surrounding villages. We always recommend booking as most local restaurants are small.

Marhamchurch

Regular visitors will know the village pub in Marhamchurch, the Bullers Arms. This is about a 10 minute walk but there aren’t any street lights, so please remember a torch if you are planning a walk back along the lane. Find the pub on Facebook or call 01288 361277. The pub is not currently serving food. However… there is a mobile chef outside the pub serving serving curry on a Wednesday evening and a roast lunch on Sundays. You are welcome to eat this in the pub and they can provide plates and cutlery.

Also check out Potters Fish N Things – good fish and chips. Outside the Bullers Arms every other Friday and in other local villages too. You can see the schedule and order online through their website

Just outside the village by the canal the Weir is a modern child-friendly cafe and bistro, open daily 9am-evenings, with a children’s play area. You can walk over the fields to Widemouth Bay from here, or into Bude along the canal. Check their website for opening hours.

Restaurants in Bude

Life’s a Beach is a long-established restaurant overlooking Summerleaze beach, usually open 10-8.30 (bar 9.30). Good range of food and the fish, burgers, curries, salads are recommended. Children’s menu. Take-aways available to eat on the beach.

Temple is a small, innovative restaurant. Opening hours are seasonal – check their Instagram TempleBude for the latest, or book on their website. Small plates and drinks on the terrace or the full menu in the restaurant. Locally-sourced interesting food, beautifully presented.

The Deck is another relaxed restaurant on Summerleaze Crescent, in the Edgcumbe Hotel. Skewers, burgers, ribs, steak, good fish. Children’s menu.

La Bocca is a small traditional Italian pizzeria in Bude. They will also do take away and deliver to Hilton Farm Holidays.

The Bank is a popular tapas bar. Open Tuesday to Saturday.

Rosie’s kitchen on Crooklets beach serve ice creams and milkshakes as well as a beach cafe menu and pizza. Open 10-4 every day and also in the evening Wednesday-Saturday.

Preston Gate Inn, Poughill. Heading out of Bude, in the village of Poughill, the Preston Gate is popular with locals.

The Olive Tree on the wharf in Bude serves coffee, cake and lunch daily. Also open some evenings. Check their website or Facebook page for the latest opening hours. Great spot to sit outside on a nice day.

The Falcon Hotel in Bude – try a cocktail in their secret garden or an afternoon tea. Coffee, lunches and evening meals available.

Takeaways

There are several fish and chip shops in Bude – the Mermaid and The Plaice are both taking orders for collection. If you are looking for an Indian, try Mirchi or the Bay Tree in the centre of town. For Chinese try Tiandi.

Icecream and pasties

Try the Taste of Cornwall on Belle Vue (opposite Boots) for a good choice of yummy icecream and milkshakes. Scoop on Lansdown Road sells icecream, waffles, crepes and sundaes.

Pengenna pasties on Lansdown Road, Tasty Pasties on Princes Street and the pasties from the Electric Bakery are all recommended.

Widemouth Bay

If you have been to Widemouth Bay and feel like getting breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake afterwards we recommend the cafe and shop at Cornish Coasts campsite on the A39. Opening hours vary. If you would like an ice cream at Widemouth in the summer holidays the ice creams at the Beach House hotel snack bar on the beach (head north along the beach) are the best, and the queue is usually shorter. Head north away from the car park. There are cafes in the Widemouth car park and also Blackrock. Widemouth Manor has a restaurant and bar with great views. Open daily, including Sunday lunch.

The Bay View Inn is a great spot to take in the sunset. Open daily.

Further afield…

A few recommendations a bit further afield.

Rectory Tea Rooms at Morwenstow. Lovely lunches and cakes. Take a walk to Hawkers Hut and explore the church while you are there.

The Mill House Inn at Trebarwith Strand. Good food, Sunday lunches, great beach just down the road (don’t go when the tide is in as the beach disappears).

The Rocket Store in Boscastle. Very small restaurant. Great fish. Good for couples. You definitely need to book. Open in the evening and for lunch too but please note daytime parking in Boscastle during the summer can be difficult.

Molesworth Arms Pyworthy good village pub just “over the border” in Devon, about 20 minutes away. Open Thursday-Saturday 6pm-10pm and Sunday lunch.

Check out Paul Ainsworth’s restaurants in Padstow or Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac for a special meal.

There is plenty to do locally with a choice of beaches and watersports. Or relax on site and take in the great views. We are close to the coastal path for some great walks.

Hilton Farm Holidays is a good base for exploring North Cornwall and North Devon. Padstow, Rock, Wadebridge, the Camel Trail, Clovelly, Appledore, Boscastle and Tintagel are all within a hour’s drive. The Eden Project, Plymouth with the National Marine Aquarium and harbour, Truro, St Agnes, Exeter, Lanhydrock and Cotehele are a bit further but still within easy reach.

New Year 2024 in Cornwall

We have limited availability for New Year 2024. Manor is a modern, open plan cottage, with great views from the spacious living area. Manor sleeps up to six people in two double rooms (one with king size bed and ensuite shower) and a twin. Book a time to relax in our hot tub, after a bracing walk on one of the beautiful local beaches. Enjoy a game of tennis or table tennis, or try the pool table in our games room. We also have a children’s play area. The village pub is a ten minute walk down the road. Bude and the coast are a ten minute drive away.

A stay over New Year 2024 in Manor cottage starts from £800 for 4 nights, from 28th, 29th or 30th December 2023.

Here are some suggestions for eating out in Bude 2023. We always recommend booking as most local restaurants are small.

Marhamchurch

On Tuesday evenings there is a good wood fired pizza oven in Stratton in the public car park next to the King’s Arms – Alex’s Wood Fired Pizzas on facebook. Book in advance and they will have it ready for you.

Just outside the village by the canal the Weir is a modern child-friendly cafe and bistro, open daily 9am-8pm, with a children’s play area. You can walk over the fields to Widemouth Bay from here, or into Bude along the canal.

Eating out in Bude - Spring and Summer 2022

Here are some suggestions for eating out in Bude and the local area. We always recommend booking in advance as most local restaurants are small.

Marhamchurch

Regular visitors will know the village pub in Marhamchurch, the Bullers Arms. This is about a 10 minute walk but there aren’t any street lights, so please remember a torch if you are planning a walk back along the lane. Find the pub on Facebook or call 01288 361277. The pub is not serving food at the moment but you are welcome to eat a takeaway there (see a few suggestions below) and they will provide cutlery.

On Tuesday evenings there is a good wood fired pizza oven in Stratton in the public car park next to the King’s Arms – Alex’s Wood Fired Pizzas on facebook. Book in advance and they will have it ready for you. On Wednesday evenings there is a mobile chef at the Bullers Arms selling curry.

Just outside the village by the canal the Weir is a modern child-friendly cafe and bistro, open daily 9am-8pm, with a children’s play area. You can walk over the fields to Widemouth Bay from here, or into Bude along the canal.

Restaurants in Bude

Life’s a Beach is a long-established restaurant overlooking Summerleaze beach. The restaurant is open from 10-5. Good range of food and the fish, burgers, curries, salads are recommended. Children’s menu. Take-aways available to eat on the beach.

Sea Fever restaurant in the Atlantic Hotel, overlooking Summerleaze beach. Local chef and locally-sourced food. Open Tuesday-Saturday, 6.30-8.30pm.

Temple is a small, innovative restaurant open from 4pm. Small plates and drinks on the terrace or the full menu in the restaurant. Locally-sourced interesting food, beautifully presented. Located on Granville Terrace at the bottom of town, along from the TSB.

The Deck is another relaxed restaurant on Summerleaze Crescent, in the Edgcumbe Hotel. Skewers, burgers, ribs, steak, good fish. Children’s menu.

La Bocca is a small traditional Italian pizzeria in Bude. They will also do take away and deliver to Hilton Farm Holidays.

The Bank is a popular tapas bar. Open in the evening Tuesday to Saturday.

Potters restaurant and cocktail bar. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 6.30. Great food, locally sourced.

The Barge is a cafe on a boat moored along the canal where you can get lunches, good coffee and cake.

Rosie’s kitchen on Crooklets beach serve ice creams and milkshakes as well as a beach cafe menu and pizza. Open 10-4 every day and also in the evening Thursday-Saturday.

Preston Gate Inn, Poughill. Heading out of Bude, in the village of Poughill, the Preston Gate is popular with locals.

Takeaways

There are several fish and chip shops in Bude – the Mermaid and The Plaice are both taking orders for collection. If you are looking for an Indian, try Mirchi or the Bay Tree in the centre of town. For Chinese try Tiandi.

Northcott Mouth

If you are heading for Northcott Mouth beach or enjoying a walk across the downs from Bude towards Northcott stop off for a cream tea at the Rustic Tea Garden, just inland from the beach. You will spot the tea pot sign as you walk down the coastal path. The cream teas are highly recommended but they also serves hot pasties and freshly made sandwiches. Find the Rustic Tea Garden on facebook . Open Easter-September.

Widemouth Bay

If you have been to Widemouth Bay and feel like getting breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake afterwards we recommend the cafe and shop at Cornish Coasts campsite on the A39. Opening hours vary. If you would like an ice cream at Widemouth in the summer holidays the ice creams at the Beach House hotel snack bar on the beach (head north along the beach) are the best, and the queue is usually shorter. Head north away from the car park. There are cafes in the Widemouth car park and also Blackrock. Widemouth Manor has a restaurant and bar with great views. Open daily, including Sunday lunch.

Further afield…

A couple of recommendations a bit further afield.

Rectory Tea Rooms at Morwenstow. Lovely lunches and cakes. Take a walk to Hawkers Hut and explore the church while you are there.

The Mill House Inn at Trebarwith Strand. Good food, Sunday lunches, great beach just down the road (don’t go when the tide is in as the beach disappears).

The Rocket Store in Boscastle. Very small restaurant. Great fish. Good for couples. You definitely need to book. Open in the evening and for lunch too but please note daytime parking in Boscastle during the summer can be difficult.

Easter breaks 2022

Easter breaks 2022. Are you looking for a break over Easter 2022? We have availability in our comfortable self-catering cottages. We are in a peaceful spot, just a 10 minute drive from Bude and Widemouth Bay. October half term 2021 availability at Hilton Farm Holidays. Our comfortable self-catering cottages are a 10 minute drive from Bude and the North Cornwall coast. We have a children’s play area, games room, tennis court and hot tub on site. Our peaceful, rural site has great views and is a convenient location for exploring North Cornwall and North Devon as well as the Bude area, as we are only a few minutes from the A39. Clovelly, Padstow, Tintagel and Boscastle are all an easy drive away. Surfing is available either in Bude or at Widemouth Bay. You can try paddle boarding and kayaking at Tamar Lake or on Bude canal. Try great walks on the coastal path and beaches, finishing with a hot chocolate or a cream tea in one of the local cafes.

Hoorah! As of 17 May there is no need to huddle under a blanket in the garden. Restaurants, pubs and cafes will be able to open in doors in line with social distancing restrictions. Bude’s restaurants and cafes are starting to open up their outside seating areas, before indoor dining hopefully resumes again on 17 May (fingers crossed). Not all of our favourites have outside seating but some are offering takeouts instead.

Cafes

1. Electric Bakery, open Wednesday-Sundays 9am-2pm. The Electric Bakery sells great bread and cakes. They also offer a small range of sandwiches, pasties and soup at lunchtime and a Saturday lunch special (booking in advance recommended). At the bottom of Kings Hill in Bude. Check out their website or updates on Instagram.
2. Temple, on Granville Terrace just behind the TSB bank up from the road leading to Summerleaze car park. No outside dining sadly, but Temple are offering a range of take out deli style sandwiches and salads at lunchtime. Find out more on their Instagram page (templebude).
3. The Barge. a cafe on a boat moored along the Wharf in Bude. Open every day till 5pm for coffee, drinks, cakes.
4. Olive Tree Bude, on the wharf. Now open till 10-4 every day and in the evenings on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays for dinner. No reservations. Find them on facebook.
5. Rustic Tea Garden, Northcott Mouth. A great stop for a cream tea after a walk along the coastal path from Bude. Closed on Mondays. Check them out on facebook
6. Rosie’s on Crooklets Beach is a beach cafe selling food and ice cream during the day and a bistro/pizzeria Friday and Saturday evenings. Covered patio area.
7. Life’s a Beach on Summerleaze, currently open for breakfast and lunch. See more on facebook.
8. The Weir Bistro, just outside the village on the A39. Lots of outside seating. Open 9-5 Monday to Wednesday and till 8pm Thursday-Sunday.

6. Last but definitely not least, the Bullers Arms in Marhamchurch is open. They are not currently serving food and outside seating is limited. Stop to enjoy a drink or you are welcome to eat a takeaway meal there too – there is the fish and chip van in the village on Friday afternoons (till around 6) or there is a mobile chef serving curries at the pub on Wednesdays

1. Alex’s Wood-fired pizza has a mobile pizza van which comes to Stratton, just down the road, on a Tuesday. See their facebook page for details.

Family cottages

Parsons cottage, with a private hot tub in the garden is perfect for a relaxing break. Parsons is a spacious, modern cottage which sleeps up to 7. Or try Manor cottage which sleeps 6 and has great views from the open plan living area upstairs. Larger groups sometimes book both cottages, as they are next door and have space indoors for groups to get together.

For smaller family groups or couples, Pound cottage is popular. It is all on one level, so it is ideal for families with small children. Or try one of our family barn conversion cottages, Badger, Swallow’s Nest and Primrose.

Spring breaks near Bude

We are looking forward to opening on 12 April. While we are very busy over the summer, we do have availability for Spring breaks near Bude. Just a 10 minute drive from Bude or Widemouth Bay, our comfortable cottages are a great base for exploring North Cornwall. Or relax on our peaceful, rural site and take in the views. Our outdoor pool and hot tub will be open too.

We have availability in cottages sleeping 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 11 between 19 April and 21 May (single household rule applies until 17 May.

Our beautiful Farmhouse is also now available 22-29 May due to a cancellation. The Farmhouse sleeps up to 11 in 5 bedrooms. With lots of space, it is ideal for get togethers with family or friends.

Temple is a small, innovative cafe and restaurant open for brunch, lunch and evenings Wednesday-Saturday. Locally-sourced interesting food, beautifully presented. Good coffee too. Located on Granville Terrace at the bottom of town, along from the TSB.

The Deck is another relaxed restaurant on Summerleaze Crescent, in the Edgcumbe Hotel. Skewers, burgers, ribs, steak, good fish. Children’s menu.

La Bocca is a small traditional Italian pizzeria in Bude. They will also do take away and deliver to Hilton Farm Holidays. Owned by the family that run the modern Italian style restaurant at Elements at Widemouth Bay.

The Bank is a popular tapas bar. Open Tuesday to Sunday.

Potters restaurant and cocktail bar. New to Bude this summer and we haven’t had chance to try it yet. Cafe open Monday to Sunday, restaurant and cocktail bar Wednesday to Saturday.

The Barge is a cafe on a boat moored along the canal where you can get lunches, good coffee and cake.

Rosie’s kitchen on Crooklets beach serve ice creams and milkshakes as well as a beach cafe menu and pizza. Open 10-4 every day and also in the evening Thursday-Saturday.

Takeaways

There are several fish and chip shops in Bude – the Mermaid and The Plaice are both taking orders for collection. If you are looking for an Indian, try Mirchi or the Bay Tree in the centre of town. For Chinese try Tiandi.

Northcott Mouth

If you are heading for Northcott Mouth beach or enjoying a walk across the downs from Bude towards Northcott stop off for a cream tea at the Rustic Tea Garden, just inland from the beach. You will spot the tea pot sign as you walk down the coastal path. The cream teas are highly recommended but they also serves hot pasties and freshly made sandwiches. Find the Rustic Tea Garden on facebook or Trip Advisor. Open Easter-September-ish.

Widemouth Bay

If you have been to Widemouth Bay and feel like getting breakfast, lunch or coffee and cake afterwards we recommend the cafe and shop at Cornish Coasts campsite on the A39. Opening hours vary. If you would like an ice cream at Widemouth in the summer the ice creams at the Beach House hotel snack bar on the beach are the best, and the queue is usually shorter. Head north away from the car park. There are cafes in the Widemouth car park and also Blackrock. Trelawny Tearoom, just opposite the main car park, serve good cream teas – this year you have to book (01288 361946).

Coronavirus update for Summer 2020

We are currently open for holidays and taking bookings for 2021. Please note that we have made some changes in line with Covid19 guidance. We expect these to be in place until at least the end of September. Detailed information will be sent out prior to arrival but please check with us if you have any questions.

Our outdoor pool and shared hot tub

The pool and hot tub are currently open and we are using a booking system so each group can book a slot. We expect this to be in place for the pool until it closes (4 October this year) and we may well need to continue with the booking system for the hot tub after that. Unfortunately we have had to remove all the sun loungers and cushions from the pool area. There are a couple of benches.

Children’s Games Room

The Children’s Games Room is currently closed until at least the end of September. We do not yet know when we will be able to re-open it.

Check in and check out

To allow time for the extra sanitsation requirements we have unfortunately had to delay check in to 5pm. Please note this is not guaranteed and we will try to keep you updated if there is likely to be a delay. Check out is now 9am.

Coronavirus (covid19) and your holiday (as at 20 May 2020)

We are currently closed until 4 July which is the earliest possible date accommodation providers will be allowed to open under the government’s latest guidance. All bookings up till 4 July have been postponed or refunded. We have been in contact with guests who have a booking in July to update them on the situation. We are taking bookings from 4 July onwards at present. If you wish to make a booking for July or August 2020 we are happy to do this on the basis of a 10% deposit (rather than the usual 25%) due to the uncertainty over opening dates. We are asking all guests not to pay the balance due for stays in July and August 2020 until we are sure when we can open.

We are currently reviewing cleaning procedures and use of our shared facilities. We will continue to update you as more government guidance becomes available.

Corona Virus (Covid19) and your holiday (as of 22 March 2020)

Sadly we have decided to close temporarily and we are not taking any new bookings for holidays before 31 May. We will review this as and when government advice changes.

This is a very difficult time for everyone and we are really sad to be closing. However, thinking of our guests and the local community, we have decided this is the most responsible way forward. We hope to see you all in Cornwall soon – the beaches, sunsets and cream teas will still be here. Stay healthy.

Easter Holidays 2020

Are you looking for a break over the Easter Holidays? We have availability in our cottages in Marhamchurch, a 10 minute drive from Bude and the coast. Our heated outdoor pool opens on 3 April, in time for the main Easter Holidays. We also have a tennis court, hot tub, children’s games area and play room on site.

Our comfortable cottages are a 10 minute drive from the small seaside town of Bude, and about the same from Widemouth Bay. Lots of watersports are available nearby. Visit Tintagel and Boscastle, about 30 minutes away, or explore further afield into North Devon, along the North Cornwall coast to Padstow, or visit the Eden project. Walk the south west coastal path and explore local beaches.

Late availability offer

We have a late availability offer of 10% discount when you book for a week in the following cottages.

Farmhouse from 3 or 4 April – usually £1580, now £1430. Our spacious Farmhouse sleeps 11 or 12 in 5 bedrooms. There is lots of room for a group of family or friends to get together.

Pound cottage from 3 or 4 April for 4 or 5 nights £420 or £520 . Pound is a comfortable, modern cottage, sleeping 4. Also available from 16 April (minimum 3 night stay, £330).

Swallow’s Nest from 3 or 4 April or from 11 April – usually £550, now £500. Swallow’s Nest is a cosy barn conversion for 4.

Primrose from 3 or 4 April – usually £550, now £500. Primrose is a cosy barn conversion for 5.

Cold water swimming

I’ve seen a lot lately about the benefits of wild swimming or cold water swimming outside all year round. “Cold water therapy”, including year-round sea swimming, recently featured in the BBC’s “Easy Ways to Live Well”, with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall taking a dip in the sea. Apparently there are benefits for physical and mental health, particularly dealing with stress.

Here in Cornwall there are people who swim in the sea all year. Even on the coldest day, if I walk on the beach I will usually see surfers, paddle boarders or kayakers in the water. A friend has recently started a weekly dip in the sea with the Bluetits Chill Swimmers group, just down the coast in Newquay.

Bude has its own beautiful Sea Pool on Summerleaze beach where you can try cold water swimming even if the sea is rough. You often see groups of swimmers there all year round. Some wear wetsuits, others just a swimming costume. I love the sea pool and in winter on a calm day it looks very inviting. I haven’t braved it yet though between September and March – maybe this will be the year!

Bude also has an annual Christmas Day swim from Crooklets Beach when lots of people run into the sea – and usually straight out again, screaming. This must be a good way of working up an appetite for that Christmas dinner.

Bude’s Sea Pool is just 10 minutes away from our cottages. Even better, you can always warm up in the hot tub afterwards. Or perhaps curl up in front of a wood burner with a hot chocolate to recover.

Spring is on the way!

We are past the end of January now and Spring is on the way after a very wet and windy winter. The spring flowers and blossom are starting to appear.

Sunsets and sunrises

January highlights included some spectacular sunrises and we went to Widemouth Bay a few times to watch the sun setting over the Atlantic. Widemouth is just 10 minutes away in the car and the sunsets are spectacular. This is the only positive about shorter days!

The Eden Project

We fitted in a visit to the Eden Project too. We like to go in the winter while the ice rink is open, usually from October to February when it’s not too busy. The ice rink is great fun and afterwards you can warm up exploring the rainforest and the rope bridges in the tropical biome. The tropical flowers were beautiful this year and we saw pineapples and bananas growing. We also enjoyed a visit to the Mediterranean Biome, where we saw citrus trees. A real contrast to the bare branches and Spring flowers outside.

This year we took three teens and an 8 year old and we all enjoyed the afternoon. It is about an hour’s drive from our cottages. We always enjoy ourselves at the Eden Project – well worth a visit. It is not a cheap day out, but tickets are valid for 12 months (if you buy them as a donation) so you can always visit again if you are coming back to Cornwall. Buy online in advance for a cheaper rate. You can take a picnic which you can eat inside or outside, or you can buy food there, ranging from pasties and sandwiches to a full meal. Dogs are welcome, but not in the biomes.

We have availability for short breaks and longer stays in our cottages until the beginning of April. We open our outdoor pool for the school Easter holidays on 3 April and we have some cottages available if you would like to get away then for a break with friends or family. Then head back to your cottage and curl up in front of the fire with a good book and a hot chocolate. Or perhaps warm up in a hot tub. Parsons has a private hot tub in the garden. Explore Bude or venture further afield and make the most of the peace and tranquility of Cornwall during the winter months. Perhaps visit the Eden project and try the ice rink (until 23 Feb) or try a visit to Clovelly or Padstow.

Swimming pool...

It’s that time of year, now that Christmas is over, when we start to think optimistically about warmer weather and opening our outdoor swimming pool ready for the summer season.

We open our heated outdoor swimming pool for the start of the main school Easter holidays each year, until the end of September. In 2020 our pool will be open from 3 April until 30 September. Fingers crossed for some warm, sunny weather. The hot tub is open all year round.

We are 10 minutes from Bude and the beautiful North Cornwall coast. There are lots of beaches to explore, from secluded sandy coves to family-friendly Summerleaze in Bude with the Bude Sea Pool. The local beaches at Widemouth Bay and in Bude are popular with surfers. You can book lessons and hire boards and wetsuits locally.

We are in a rural location on the edge of a village, but just a short drive from the A39, so a great base for exploring the North Cornwall and North Devon coast. Padstow, Clovelly, Port Isaac and Polzeath are all within 30 minutes to an hour away. Further afield, the Eden Project is about an hour’s drive and the Lost Gardens of Heligan slightly further.

Happy Christmas to all our guests! We hope you have a relaxing time catching up with family or friends over the holidays. If you are thinking of getting away for a break over the Christmas holidays next year, we are now taking bookings for Christmas 2020 and New Year 2020/2021.

Christmas in Cornwall

It was 1 December yesterday so to get into the Christmas spirit, we visited Cotehele, a National Trust house and estate near Saltash. Cotehele is worth a visit at any time of year. The house closes for the winter but the grounds are great for a walk. You can take your dog with you in most of the estate (not the formal gardens or the house).  The Cotehele Christmas garland is on display now until 5 January (except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day). The garland is made of thousands of flowers which are grown and then dried on the estate every year.

We also enjoyed a walk down to the Quay with our dog, and then we had a wander around the formal gardens. Even in December the gardens are well worth a visit.

Cotehele is about an hour’s drive from our holiday cottages near Bude. We are fully booked for New Year 2019/20 but we do have some availability for Christmas in our smaller cottages. We are now taking bookings for 2020!

There are lots of things to do at this time of year. We love ice skating at the Eden Project, then warming up in the tropical biome. We enjoy walking on the beaches at this time of year – no mud and lots of space! If the weather is rubbish why not warm up in our hot tub, or curl up by a wood burner (Manor, Parsons and the Farmhouse) with a book.

School holidays 2020!

Are you looking for a self-catering cottage in North Cornwall for the school holidays 2020? Our cottages are almost fully booked for May half-term (week from 23 May 2020),with only Pound cottage (sleeps 4) and cottages for 2 available. The summer school holidays 2020 are getting busy too but we still have some availability most weeks. If you are thinking of a break over Easter, our pool will be open from 3 April and we have cottages available throughout the Easter break.

Just a few minutes from the small seaside town of Bude, we are in a quiet rural spot with great views. Bude itself has been voted Best UK coastal resort several times over the last few years. Bude is small and unspoilt, with independent shops and restaurants. There are two beaches, a semi-natural sea pool and some great walks along the coastal path. If you want to explore further afield, we are near to the A39 which gives easy access to North Devon and North Cornwall. Visit Clovelly, Boscastle and Tintagel which are all within 30 minutes. Or try the Eden Project and Lanhydrock.

If you are feeling adventurous there are lots of watersports available locally. Try coasteering or book a surfing lesson from one of the local beaches. You can try paddle boarding on the canal or the sea pool to get your balance before you have a go on the sea. Kayaking is available along the canal to see the wildlife, or on nearby Tamar Lakes. Or maybe just go for a walk along the coastal path and take in the scenery.

Summer holidays in Bude

Well, the summer holidays in Bude 2019 are almost over and the children will soon be back at school. For those who are lucky enough not to be restricted to the school holidays, September is a good month to visit Cornwall. The beaches – and those narrow country lanes – will be quieter. Hopefully we will still get some sunshine and good weather. For September offers please take a look at our late availability page.

We are now taking bookings for Summer 2020. Our cottages are just 10 minutes from Bude and a choice of beaches. We have a heated outdoor pool (Easter holidays-end September) and hot tub on site, as well as a children’s play area and games room. For those wanting a bit more luxury, Parsons cottage (sleeps 7) now has a private hot tub in the garden.

Bude

Bude is a small seaside town on the North Cornish coast, a great spot for a holiday. It is relatively quiet and unspoilt. Even in July and August you can get away from the crowds and find a quiet beach. We are in a peaceful rural location on the edge of a village, but we are just a short drive from Bude and the coast. Access to the A39 is easy so this a good base for exploring North Devon as well as North Cornwall.

Families with small children will enjoy the sandy beaches. There are plenty of rock pools to explore and safe paddling in the sea pool. Bude also has a big indoor pool. There is also a soft play centre with bowling in case the weather is not so good.

If you enjoy watersports there is a lot of choice within the area. Kayaking, canoeing and stand up paddle boarding are available on the canal, the sea pool and nearby Tamar Lakes as well as the sea. There are some good spots for surfing and body boarding along the coast, with Widemouth Bay just a few minutes away.

Local beaches: Crackington Haven

About 20 minutes down the coast is another of our favourite local beaches: Crackington Haven. Crackington Haven is a beautiful cove with some spectacular scenery around it. Walk along the coastal path in either direction to take in the views. Beware the hills though – they are vicious! You can walk to Cam Beak, the point at the south of the cove, a longer walk with lots of steep climbs and drops. The climb to the north of the beach is also steep but easier and you can stop at a bench to take in the view.

The beach itself has stones at the top, with sand revealed further down as the tide goes out. It is great for a swim if it is calm, or body boarding, but be careful with the rocks towards the top of the beach. The beach is also popular with surfers and kayakers and you will see stand up paddle boarding too. There is lifeguard cover in the summer. No dogs are allowed from Easter till the end of September.

Crackington Haven is popular with children; the sandy beach and the rock pools are great for playing. There are also some tennis courts in a great spot, overlooking the sea. Find the Crackington Haven tennis club on facebook for more details.

There is a pub in a great spot, the Coombe Barton Inn and two cafes, including one of our favourites, the Cabin. The Cabin does evening BBQs in the summer and sells good sandwiches, cakes and ice cream, as does the cafe on the other side of the car park, the Haven. There is a small car park by the beach and another one as you are coming into Crackington Haven down the road from Wainhouse Corner.

Where to eat in Bude 2019

Bude’s restaurants and cafes are always changing so here are some suggestions of places to eat in Bude and nearby in 2019. Please book in advance, especially in the school holidays.

Places to eat in Marhamchurch

Regular visitors will know the village pub in Marhamchurch, the Bullers Arms. This is about a 10 minute walk but there aren’t any street lights, so please remember a torch if you are planning a walk back along the lane. Find the pub on Facebook or call 01288 361277. The pub serves food but please check before planning to eat there as kitchen opening hours vary. If you would like a coffee or snack, the new village shop next to the village hall sells good coffee, tea, soft drinks, snacks and hot pasties.

Just outside the village by the canal the Weir is a modern child-friendly cafe and bistro, open daily 9am-4.30, with a children’s play area. The Weir also opens in early evenings Thursday-Sunday for a BBQ menu. You can walk over the fields to Widemouth Bay from here, or into Bude along the canal.

Restaurants in Bude

Life’s a Beach is a long-established restaurant overlooking Summerleaze beach. The owners have refurbished it over the winter. Fortunately some of our old favourites are still on the menu, although it no longer has a separate restaurant menu in the evenings. Open for breakfast until 8pm or 9pm (varies daily). New bar open till 9pm daily. Good range of food and the fish, burgers, curries, salads are recommended. Children’s menu. Take-aways available to eat on the beach.

The Beach Hotel is boutique hotel overlooking Summerleaze beach with a cocktail bar and more upmarket restaurant. Good food, portions not huge. Fixed price lunch menu. Open for lunch and in the evenings every day. Cocktail bar with a good choice of drinks open daily until 11pm.

There are plenty of cafes in Bude if you are looking for somewhere to get a coffee, a light lunch or maybe a cream tea.

Try Cafe Bellini’s in the town centre for delicious sandwiches and ice cream. Find Cafe Bellini’s on Facebook. A good deli as well with a selection of local products.

We also like Get your Veg On which is a popular vegetarian cafe operating out of a caravan by the Tourist Information Centre. Recommended as one of the best vegan restaurants in a Guardian survey in 2018. Find them on Facebook as opening hours can be affected by the weather and they sometimes cater at local events instead. There are tables next to the canal where you can sit. Really good vegetarian and vegan wraps, toasties, nachos and other food freshly made with local ingredients.

Northcott Mouth

Parsons cottage now has a private hot tub in the garden! Parsons is a modern, spacious cottage which sleeps 7 in comfortable accommodation. The cottage has an open plan living area with well-equipped kitchen, woodburner and dining area. There are two double bedrooms, one ensuite with a great view. There is also a twin room and a small single. Parsons has a private garden and the hot tub is a great addition. Ideal for an extended family or group of friends to get together and enjoy a relaxing break.

Parsons is fully booked for the main school holidays this summer but it is still available between 6 and 20 July and from 31 August. We also have some short breaks available before 6 July. Or perhaps try a winter break, maybe even over Christmas, when you can warm up in the hot tub and then relax in front of the woodburner.

July 2019

If you are lucky enough not to be restricted to the main English school holidays, we do have some availability earlier in July. Come and explore the local beaches before they get busy!

13 July – last week available in our Cornish Farmhouse. Sleeps up to 11 in 5 bedrooms. The Farmhouse is great for a family holiday or a group of friends, with lots of living space and a private garden. NOW £1950.

29 June-13 July – we have availability in Parsons cottage. Parsons is a spacious, modern cottage with an open plan living space and private garden with hot tub. Parsons sleeps 7 . Popular with families and groups of friends.

Bude's beaches: Summerleaze beach

We are spoilt for choice with beaches around Bude. There are plenty of beaches within a short drive. This is the first of a few posts with tips on Bude’s beaches to help our guests choose which ones to visit. First up, Summerleaze Beach in Bude town.

Summerleaze is one of our favourites all year round. It is a big sandy beach, great for kids and surfers. It is dog -friendly all year round (although dogs must be on a lead in the summer, check the notices for details). Summerleaze is good for sandcastles, maybe not so good for rockpooling as nearby Crooklets. If you walk along towards Crooklets at low tide, you will come to a rocky section which is good for exploring.

Summerleaze is home to the Bude Sea Pool, great for serious swimmers and children who want a safer swim than the sea.

Facilities on Summerleaze beach

Summerleaze has better facilities than some of the more remote beaches. There is a big car park and toilets and showers by the RNLI station. It is a short walk to the beach so access for pushchairs is possible. Beach wheelchairs are available to hire from the Beach Office in the summer (call
01288 352226). There are toilets and showers by the RNLI station. Life’s a Beach (up the steps) sells food to take away or eat in and ice creams. Lifeguard cover for the beach and sea pool is provided by the RNLI over the Easter holidays and May-September. Check the board at the entrance to the beach for lifeguard cover hours and any warnings.

Summerleaze is popular with surfers and body boarders and a few surf schools operate from the car park.

Summerleaze beach landmarks

As well as the Sea Pool there are a few landmarks to look out for. You will see Barrel Rock at the end of the Breakwater just over river from Summerleaze. Barrel Rock has become a Bude landmark. Named after the beacon at the end of the rock, there is also a micropub called the Barrel on Lansdown Road (check the website as opening hours are limited).

Summerleaze has a half tide cross – when the sea reaches the cross bar the tide is half way.

Just next to the beach you will see the end of the Bude canal and the sea lock, one of only two working sea locks in Britain. You can cross over the lock to pick up the path along to the Breakwater. The canal itself was originally built to take sand inland. You can walk along the canal back to Marhamchurch. See our blog entry for details on the walk (scroll down to Bude Canal Walk.

What you might not like about Summerleaze

If you are looking for a quieter beach, Summerleaze is popular with families so it does get very busy in high season. There may well be queues for the car park in school holidays. Summerleaze is dog-friendly so if you would prefer a beach with no dogs, try Crooklets, just along the bay.

Easter 2019

We have cottages sleeping 2-11 available over the Easter 2019 holidays. Our spacious Cornish Farmhouse (available 8-13 April, £1000, sleeps 11) is ideal for family get togethers or a break with friends. If you are looking for a cottage for a smaller group, we have modern cottages sleeping 4, 6 and 7 or cosy barn conversions available. Pound cottage is ideal for families with young children. It sleeps 4 (plus cot) and has a spacious open plan living area. Pound is available from 20 April (NOW £630 per week). There is lots to do on site, with our heated outdoor pool (opens for the Easter holidays), tennis court, hot tub and a play area and games room for children.

Explore the area around Bude, voted the UK’s Best Coastal town in 2018. Bude is just 10 minutes’ drive away. There is a choice of beautiful beaches within a 10-20 minute drive. Try walks with breathtaking views along the coastal path or amble along the canal tow path into Bude. Hilton is just a few minutes from the A39, ideally located for exploring North Devon and North Cornwall.

Beautiful Bude

Now that we are quieter over the winter months I am making the most of my dog walks around beautiful Bude, especially when it is not raining! We are very lucky to live here, in such a lovely part of the country.  We often head for the beach which is glorious on a clear, sunny day at this time of year. There are still a few hardy surfers in the water on a good day and keen swimmers in Bude’s Sea Pool. 

 

I’ve also been trying to find some good spots to take in Autumn colours this year – too often the leaves get blown off the trees in a gale. The new footpath/Segway route/cycle path between Whalesborough, just down through the village, and Widemouth is a great place for a walk, as is the Bude canal tow path.

The sunsets at this time of year are also spectacular. A guest recently took a photo of the sunset reflected in the pond in our field (open to guests when the cows aren’t around).

It’s hard to believe it’s the last week of the school holidays and I’m thinking about Autumn. We had such a lovely warm spell in July and August; some beautiful sunny days on the beach. Today it’s raining and windy, a reminder of the other kind of Cornish weather! However, our guests are enjoying our pool which is open until the end of September. The water is always warm.

Living here has definitely made me more aware of the seasons and now the nights have started to draw in I am missing warm(ish) summer evenings. Autumn around Bude can be lovely though so I am reminding myself of some of the good things!

• Walks on beaches and the coastal path.  If you are lucky enough to be able to visit Cornwall outside the school holidays you’ll find empty beaches. Walk from Bude to Sandymouth at low tide and find the remains of a shipwreck just north of Northcott Mouth.

On a sunny day take in the views from the coastal path. One of my favourite stretches is the section between Northcott Mouth and Bude, which has some amazing views over the beach, but is not too hilly!

 

•  Sunsets. We get some beautiful sunsets over the coast all year round, but in the Autumn and Winter they are really stunning.

• Blackberries are everywhere at the moment, a bit earlier than usual, but I think they’ll be around for a few weeks. I’m looking forward to crumble, or maybe cakes with some of our eggs.

• The Budelicious food festival. This is a new event on 22nd and 23rd September, based around the Falcon Hotel in Bude. It includes demonstrations and an Artisan Producer’s Hall, where you can buy some great local produce. There will be a Foodie Fortnight from 15th-29th September, with lots of Bude’s great cafes and restaurants taking part.
• Finally, sometimes it’s nice to chill with a book, maybe curled up by a woodburner. Three of our larger cottages have woodburners. Or perhaps take a dip in our hot tub, which is open all year.

Spring breaks in Cornwall

Are you looking for Spring breaks in Cornwall with family or friends? We offer short breaks up until the end of June (except for Easter and May half term). Our lovely Farmhouse sleeps up to 11 in 5 bedrooms. It is available for Spring breaks over weekends in March and April (from £650 for 2 nights). We just have one weekend left in May (19th May, minimum 3 nights £880) and one in June (9th June, minimum 3 nights £880).  Even better our heated outdoor pool opens at the end of March for the Easter holidays!

We have had some lovely feedback from guests who stayed in the Farmhouse for February half-term. They also booked some outside catering from local chef Nicky Vereker, who delivers freshly prepared food to your cottage. Nicky’s food is really tasty.

“Just a quick note to thank you very much for our stay. The house was wonderful, a really good size for us all. The kids loved the games room and the hot tub.  What great facilities you have there. I only wish I’d found time to have a quick knock about on the tennis court but it was either the weather or we were exhausted from our walks.  Maybe next time.  Thanks also for the recommendation with Nicky, her food was really good and it was a lovely way to end our last night.”

 

February sunshine!

It is 1st February today and I am so pleased to see the back of January and welcome in some February sunshine!

I had a lovely, sunny, if breezy, walk on the beach today. Spring is definitely in the air. The chickens seem to have noticed the longer days and are busy laying eggs.

The first daffodils are appearing and snowdrops are around.

Summer 2018

We are having such a wet January I am trying to cheer myself up by planning for Summer 2018, the pool and hopefully some better weather!

We will be opening our heated outdoor pool in a couple of months ready for the Easter holidays. The family cottages are booking up quickly for the summer holidays! Check availability at the end of this post.

The pool is always popular with children and if it is sunny there is plenty of space to sit in the sun and relax. If not, well the hot tub is just next to the pool. There are lots of beaches to explore within a 10-20 minute drive. Widemouth and Black Rock beaches are a long stretch of sand about 10 minutes away.

These beaches are very popular with surfers.  In Bude, Summerleaze with the sea pool is great for families.

Crooklets is a bit quieter and good for rock pooling. Further afield, Northcott Mouth and Sandymouth are both beautiful beaches to the north of Bude (about 15 – 20 minutes’ drive), with a mix of sand and rock pools as the tide goes out. If you would like something off the beaten track try Bossiney Haven at low tide. This is near Tintagel, about a 20 minute drive and a 15 minute walk down a steep rocky path.

Or walk north from Crooklets in Bude at low tide towards Northcott Mouth, a long stretch of sandy beach. Just keep an eye on the tide!

Try a walk on the South West Coastal Path

The Times featured a walk along one of my favourite sections of the South West Coastal Path (The Times, 20/1/2018 by Christopher Somerville, or find the walk on Christopher Somerville’s website). This particular walk starts at Northcott Mouth, just north of Bude and follows the South West Coastal Path above Sandymouth to Duckpool. It then heads inland to Coombe Valley and back to Northcott Mouth though woods and the countryside. Northcott Mouth is a short drive from our cottages (about 15 minutes).

The views of the coast are spectacular along here.

In the Spring you get lots of flowers which are  beautiful.

Even on a grey and murky day in the Autumn it is still worth walking along here. The craggy cliffs, waterfalls, the long run of sand and sheer drops to the sea are always stunning. There are some steep climbs on this stretch of the path and a long flight of steps up from Northcott. For an easier walk try walking from Crooklets in Bude to Northcott. This is an easier stretch of the South West Coastal Path. Time it right and walk one way along the South West Coastal Path and the other way along the beach, which is only possible at low tide. Check tide times online at Surf Reports.

Stop for lunch….

The Times recommended the Preston Gate pub in Poughill for lunch. Definitely worth a visit, or try Margaret’s Rustic Tea Garden at Northcott Mouth in the summer or one of the many cafes or pubs in nearby Bude.

February half term

Are you looking for a short break over February half term 2018? We have availability in our family cottages sleeping from 4 to 7 starting any day from Monday 12 February (minimum booking 3 nights). Our cottages are on a small peaceful rural site close to the North Cornwall coast. We are only 10 minutes drive from the coastal town of Bude and from Widemouth Bay, a popular surfing beach. Walk on the canal path, explore the rock pools, take in the sea views from the South West Coastal path and enjoy a cream tea or a hot chocolate in one of Bude’s many small cafes before heading back to relax in the hot tub. We have a play area, games room, tennis court and hot tub on site.

Family holidays in Bude

Well we are nearly at the end of 2017 and here in Bude we have our usual wet and windy wintery weather!  I think this one is Storm Dylan which sounds far too chilled. I found a blog by a regular visitor to the area about family holidays in Bude on Love Bude’s Facebook page yesterday. This was a lovely reminder of what makes Bude a good place to stay for families, even if the weather is typically Cornish. This writer mentions some of my favourite spots; the Breakwater, the Pepperpot and the lovely sunsets. Great photos too! This is one of my favourite places in Bude, the Sea Pool on Summerleaze beach. This is great for swimming in the sea in a safe environment with children, or if you want to swim some lengths in a pool with a difference.

We’ve had some beautiful sunny days and fantastic sunsets recently which has been a welcome change from the usual wintery murky weather. Bude is lovely in the winter sun!

Autumn in Cornwall

Well, October half term passed in a blur. We are enjoying Autumn in Cornwall this year. I hope our guests had a good week despite the winds that Storm Brian brought at the start of the break. The weather did get better though! It is hard to believe that it was Halloween this week and we are now into November.

We have had a beautiful, settled, sunny week. In fact the weather is better than it was in July. I’ve had some lovely walks on the beach with the dog and the views from the coastal path are stunning. At low tide you can walk along the beach from Crooklets to Northcott or Sandymouth. It is a long stretch of sandy beach and the cliffs and rock formations are also fun to explore.

 

The best thing about the clocks going back is the winter sunsets. We have a great view from here and you can see the sun disappearing into the sea. Even better on the beach if you wrap up.

Wet weather activities around Bude.

Unfortunately sometimes the Cornish sunshine does not appear.

This need not stop you surfing, walking or going to the beach but sometimes if it is really wet and windy it is good to plan some indoor activities around Bude for your holiday, particularly if you have young children. Here are some of our suggestions.

Activities around Bude

Harlequinns Leisure is a soft play centre with ten pin bowling in Bude, just next to the indoor swimming pool Splash. Splash has a wave machine, slide and beach style shallow end for toddlers.

If you would like to try something artistic visit the Wharf in Bude. You can try painting ceramics or book binding at the Kitchen Front or on facebook. Beau Nidol runs workshops in fused glass and bone carving. Find Beau Nidol on facebook or take a look at their website.

20-30 minutes away

On the old WW2 RAF base on the moors near Davidstow you will find the Cornwall at War museum (open Easter until 30 October). This is a fun and slightly eccentric museum, staffed by enthusiastic volunteers. The museum’s exhibits about WW2, WW1 and the Falklands conflict are displayed in different buildings on the airfield, including some from the 1940s.

The village of Boscastle and the harbour is well worth a visit. You can find out more about the village at the National Trust visitor centre. While you are in Boscastle visit the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic . This is an independent museum with a large collection in Boscastle harbour (open April until end of October).

Further afield (within an hour’s drive)

On a wet day try Cornwall’s trampoline centre in Bodmin. ibounce Cornwall opened in late 2016. It is great fun for kids of all ages and adults too.

Also good on  wet day is Bodmin Jail. Creepy and atmospheric, the jail is well worth a visit. There are lots of small exhibits about prisoners, life in the jail, strange stories and executions. The Jail also organises evening events and ghost walks.

The Eden project is well worth a visit in all weathers. If the weather is not good enough to explore the gardens, the biomes are fascinating and in the winter there is an indoor ice rink.

Where to eat around Bude

We are often asked where to eat around Bude. Here are some of our favourites in the Bude area. Please tell us if you have any recommendations to add to our list.  We advise booking in advance in the school holidays.

Where to eat around Bude; evening meals

1. The Bullers Arms – Marhamchurch village pub.

The Bullers Arms has been very popular with our guests this summer. We have heard lots of good comments. Good value village pub. We are fans of their Sunday roasts! It is best to book in the school holidays.   The Bullers is a 10 minute walk down the lane. There are no street lights so you might want to take a torch if you are planning an evening meal.

2. Life’s a Beach

Life’s a Beach is a beach cafe by day and a great restaurant at night. It has great views overlooking Summerleaze beach. Some of the best food in Bude, especially if you like fish and seafood. The best burger in Bude according to my son (lunchtime menu only).

3. La Bouche Creole

La Bouche Creole serves New Orleans style food. A bit different. Spicy but not hot. Great fish, yummy puddings. The restuarant is in the Atlantic Hotel (the pink building) on Summerleaze Crescent.

4. The Beach at Bude

Good food in another great location overlooking Summerleaze beach. The Beach is a boutique hotel on Summerleaze Crescent. Great outside seating on a nice day and good cocktails.

5. The Weir

Just down the road, off the A39 opposite the turning for Marhamchurch. The Weir is a child-friendly cafe and restaurant with a play area. Open all day in the summer, including BBQ evenings.

6. Elements

Elements is an Italian restaurant in a hotel with great views overlooking Widemouth Bay.  Good food, including a children’s menu.

 

7. La Bocca

La Bocca is a tiny pizzeria on the Strand, serving authentic Italian pizzas and a limited range of other food. They also deliver.

8.  Mumma Bears

Design your own burger at this burger bar in Bude. Good vegetarian options also available. Mumma Bears also serves breakfast.

Where to eat around Bude; snacks, lunches and cream teas

The Barge is a cafe on a barge moored on Bude canal. In the summer the Barge moves to the end of the canal, overlooking Summerleaze Beach. Open 9-5.

Cafe Bellini is a small Italian style cafe on Queen Street in Bude town centre. Cafe Bellini serves a good range of sandwiches, light meals and coffee.

Get Your Veg On serve really good vegetarian and vegan salads, wraps and toasties from a caravan in the car park by the Tourist Information Office. Seating is available by the canal.

Rosie’s Kitchen at Crooklets beach in Bude serves breakfasts, lunches and evening meals in the summer. Good icecream. Our kids like the milkshakes.

Visit Margaret’s Rustic Tea Gardens at Northcott Mouth for delicious cream teas. Margaret serves great cream teas and cakes, freshly made sandwiches and pasties from a caravan in a pretty garden at Northcott Mouth.

If you are looking for a good cocktail or a nice glass of wine try North Coast Wine in Bude. This is an independent wine merchant with a great bar and friendly staff. They also serve good coffee and soft drinks. Find them on facebook.

A couple of recommendations a bit further afield but definitely worth a visit.

The Rectory Tea Rooms in Morwenstow.  Delicious lunches and cakes in a beautiful old house. If you are celebrating something special their High Teas are amazing (must be booked in advance).

Cabin Cafe in Crackington Haven. Excellent cakes and cream teas at this friendly cafe overlooking the beach in beautiful Crackington Haven. They also do BBQs in the summer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Bude canal walk

Bude canal walk is one of our favourites. Follow the tow path along the canal into Bude. There is usually lots to see along the canal; birds, butterflies, dragonflies, flowers, lambs in the spring, water voles. The tow path comes out by the Tourist Information office. You can cross the road to the Wharf and walk along to the Breakwater and Summerleaze beach. Bikes are not allowed on the tow path. If you want to cycle,  there is a cycle path which runs near the canal for much of the route.

The walk takes about an hour from Hilton, a bit longer if you have small children. The tow path is a good walk if you have a child in a pushchair. It is downhill to the canal and then a flat walk along the tow path. The path down to the canal is bumpy and quite steep. To avoid the hill on the way back you can park at the bottom of the village in the canal car park. To get to the canal car park drive into the village, turn right at the pub and head down the hill past the church and the school to Helebridge. Just before the junction with the A39 opposite the Weir, there is a turning on your right. There is a small car park on the right hand side just before the bridge. If you are walking from Hilton follow the instructions below.

Walking from Hilton

From Hilton take a left out of our gate and the first left at the top of the hill along Hilton Road. Follow this into the village. Take a left at the end of Hilton Road. You will see the pub opposite the T junction. Turn right and head for the church.

 

Walk past the church on your left and the school on your right. Continue past the first house after the school. You then come to a track on your right (signposted Public Way).

Take this path down to the canal. It is quite steep. At the end of the track you see some houses. Follow the path on the left hand side just past the SW Water station. There is a sign on the fence “Canal Walk”.

Walk along the canal to the end of the path. The car park is on the other side of the canal. Cross the road and follow the path under the A39. This brings you out by to the Weir cafe and bistro. The Weir is a good place for a coffee or meal with children. There is a play area and lake. Bude Segway tours leave from here. For the Weir turn left. For Bude turn right along the tow path. Follow the tow path.

Bude Canal

Bude canal was completed in 1825, with a total length of 57km/36 miles. The lowest section of the Canal, between Bude and Helebridge, was built to be operable by barges. The rest of the canal was operated by small “tub boats”. The canal was used to transport sand inland. You can find out more about the history of the canal on the Bude Canal Trust site or from the Bude Canal and Harbour Society.  Just next to the car park in Helebridge is the Barge Workshop (owned by Bude Stratton Town Council, open Sunday afternoons late July-September only). Here you can see an example of a Bude Canal tub boat. These had wheels to get up the hills or “inclined planes”. There is a board along the Helebridge section of the canal walk which explains how the system worked.

Keep going along the tow path until you come to Rodd’s Bridge, a green painted bridge next to Rodd’s Farm. Cross the bridge and go through the gate onto the tow path on the other side of the canal. There are usually plenty of water birds to see along this stretch; herons, ducks, geese and swans.

If you don’t want to walk all the way into Bude, you can loop back to the village here along the cycle path.

The tow path comes to an end by the Tourist Information Office. At the end of the tow path you can cross the road over to the Wharf and walk along to the sea lock at the end of the canal or down onto Summerleaze beach. You can also explore the Breakwater if the tide is out.

Where to eat by the canal

There are plenty of places to eat along the canal in Bude. If you like vegetarian food there is a caravan in the Tourist Information car park in the spring and summer Get Your Veg On. This sells delicious vegetarian salads, toasties and wraps.  Over along the Wharf you can try the Barge, a tea room in a Barge, open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. The Barge is moored at the end of the canal by the sea lock in the summer and down on the main Wharf in the winter. On the Wharf itself try the Olive Tree or the Lock Gates Tea Room.

Bude

There is lots to do around Bude. The town has two lovely beaches, Summerleaze and Crooklets. Summerleaze also has the Bude Sea Pool. Most local attractions are open in September. Watersports are available at most beaches and on the canal all year round. See some of our other blog entries for ideas on what to do in the area.

Favourite walks around Bude

Crooklets in Bude to Northcott or Sandymouth along the sand and coastal path

One of our favourite walks around Bude is along the beach from Crooklets to Northcott Mouth or Sandymouth at low tide, coming back along the coastal path for the views. You need to time it right as the tide does come in quickly and cuts off parts of the beach. You can check tide times at Surf Reports.

This is a beautiful long stretch of sand with lots of rock pools and with the backdrop of the dramatic cliffs and the strange rock formations. This walk is popular with all the family and especially our dog, Toby.

Start the walk at Crooklets beach. in Bude. Parking is available at Crooklets or Rosie’s cafe or on the street from October to the end of May. Dogs are not allowed on Crooklets from Easter to the end of September. However, you can still do the walk. Just walk up above Crooklets, either taking the steps next to  the Bude SSLC hut behind Rosie’s or following the road up behind Rosie’s. Go through the gate onto the coastal path where you will see a path going down through the cliffs on your left. Follow this and scramble down the rocks onto the beach. Head right and you will find a way through the rocks down onto the sand.

Walk along the sands to Northcott Mouth. This is a dog friendly beach and there is a lifeguard service in the summer. You can climb up the beach here. It is a bit of a scramble over stones at the top. You will see a cottage up on the top of the cliffs to your right as you face inland. The coastal path back to Bude runs up past this cottage. This is a fairly easy stretch of the coastal path with no really steep climbs or steps. The views are spectacular and the flowers in Spring are beautiful.

If you feel like stopping for lunch or a cream tea Margaret’s Rustic Tea Gardens  at Northcott Mouth are highly recommended. The cream teas and cakes are delicious. Sandwiches and pasties are good too. All seating is outside in a pretty garden just along the track from the beach. Margaret’s is open from Easter to early October.

Alternatively carry on along the sand to Sandymouth, a beautiful National Trust beach. If the tide is low, just north of Northcott Mouth you will see bits of a shipwreck sticking up from the sands. This is the wreck of the SS Belem which ran ashore in 1917.

From Sandymouth walk up the path leading up from the beach. Pick up the coastal path on the right towards Bude. There is a cafe and toilet at Sandymouth (March-November, times vary), or stop off at Margaret’s at Northcott along the way.

The path from Sandymouth to Northcott is more difficult than the stretch to Bude. There is a steep but short climb from Sandymouth to the coastal path and a steep run of steps down to Northcott.

You can walk from Crooklets to Northcott and back in an hour if you are quick. Allow and hour and a half to two hours if you want to explore the beach or stop off for lunch. Allow two hours to walk from Crooklets to Sandymouth and back.

Things to do around Bude

We are about 10 minutes away from Bude, a small seaside town on the beautiful North Cornwall coast. Bude has won the British Travel Awards Best UK Coastal Resort two years in a row! Visit the Tourist Information site or drop into their office by the canal to find out more about Bude.

Here are some of our favourite highlights from what the area around Bude has to offer.

The beaches and Bude Sea Pool

Bude has two beaches in town – Crooklets and Summerleaze. Try the Sea Pool on Summerleaze beach which offers safe swimming in the sea. The Sea Pool was built in the 1930s and is run by a community group. Surfing and body boarding are popular on both beaches, or try surfing at nearby Widemouth Bay. Board hire and lessons are available on all beaches. If it’s too cold for a dip, explore the rock pools at Crooklets or Black Rock (south end of Widemouth).

 

A walk along the coast

If you feel like a walk, you can walk along the sand from Crooklets to Northcott Mouth or Sandymouth at low tide. Please check the tide times as parts of the beach do get cut off! Walk one way along the coastal path for the spectacular views. You can pick up the coastal path at Crooklets, Northcott or Sandymouth. At low tide you can see the remains of a 1917 shipwreck, the Belem, just north of Northcott Mouth beach. Stop for a cream tea with Margaret at her Rustic Tea Rooms at Northcott Mouth (open from Easter-September). Dog owners this is a good walk with a dog but please note that there are sometimes sheep on the path in the winter and Crooklets is closed to dogs from Easter to the end of September. This does not stop you from doing the walk with a dog though. If you go through the gate onto the coastal path above Crooklets a path leads down through the cliffs onto the beach just beyond Crooklets where you can scramble over the rocks onto the beach. Or park at Northcott or Sandymouth which are both dog-friendly beaches (National Trust car parks).

You can walk from Marhamchurch into Bude along the canal and go along to the breakwater at the end of harbour – at low tide you can walk out along the breakwater. Or head south from Bude towards Widemouth Bay along the coastal path to take in more fantastic views of the rocky coastline.

 

Tamar Otter and Wildlife Centre

The Tamar Otter and Wildlife Centre is about 20 minutes away and well worth a visit. The otters are fascinating to watch and the small park also has deer, wallabies, owls, giant rabbits and meerkats. It is great for children of all ages. You can see the otters being fed and walk in the woodlands, looking out for the deer and wallabies.

Tintagel and Boscastle

If you are feeling energetic visit the castle ruins at Tintagel. The ruins, which are linked to the legends of King Arthur, are on a dramatic rocky outcrop jutting into the sea, with some amazing views. This is an English Heritage property so there is usually lots going on in the school holidays (open Easter-30 September). Stop off in Boscastle to explore the village and harbour or visit the Witchcraft Museum.

Cornwall at War Museum

The Cornwall at War Museum is on a bleak spot on the moors near Davidstow (open Easter-end October) on an old WW2 airfield, with exhibits in some of the original buildings. This is a small and atmospheric museum, run by volunteers, great if you have an interest in WW2 and popular with children.

St Nectan’s Glen and Rocky Valley

Two lovely walks along the river between Tintagel and Boscastle. Walk along the river to St Nectan’s Glen and see the waterfall crashing through a hole in the rocks (fee payable at cafe).

The walk along Rocky Valley follows the river on its way to the coast, passing a ruined mill and ending with some spectacular scenery. You can walk back to the road along the coastal path above Bossiney Haven, a secluded and beautiful beach, worth visiting if you are feeling energetic enough for the climb back up to the car park.

Great Easter holidays come to an end

We have had a fantastic Easter here in Cornwall, with three weeks of dry weather and a lot of sunshine. Our Easter visitors made the most of the weather. Lots of children enjoyed the pool and there were a few trips to the beach. Unfortunately our dry weather came to an end today with a hail shower at 7.30. This was not popular with my eldest, who refused to get up.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We had some lovely feedback in the visitors’ book in the Farmhouse. Our Farmhouse is always popular with extended families and groups of friends as there is plenty of space. Dog friendly holidays in Cornwall

Are you looking for dog friendly holidays in North Cornwall? Perhaps you are thinking of bringing your dog on holiday with you. Lots of visitors to Cornwall bring their dogs on holiday. There are dog friendly beaches and attractions open all year round so with a bit of planning hopefully you will all enjoy your holiday. If you are looking for dog friendly holidays in North Cornwall the Bude area is a good place to start

Last summer we got a Labrador puppy, Toby.Toby is past the cute puppy stage now and has far more energy than we do! Over the last few months we have done a lot of walking around Bude and sometimes farther afield. We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the UK and unless the weather is really bad, walks with Toby are nearly always a good part of the day.

Local walks

The area around Bude and Marhamchurch has lots of good dog walks, essential for a dog friendly holiday. The scenery is very varied,  from the canal tow path to fields, woods, country lanes, the coastal path and the beach. Our favourite walks are along the coastal path from Bude, usually finishing with Toby having a mad ten minutes on the beach.

When the tide is out you can walk the long stretch of sand from Crooklets to Northcott or Sandymouth. Walk back along the coastal path and take in the stunning views.  In the other direction, explore the breakwater in Bude if the tide is out and then take the coastal path over Efford Downs towards Widemouth Bay. The scenery in this direction is more rugged and dramatic. Carry on through Upton and pick up the tow path back to Bude or walk to Widemouth and back. There are plenty of cafes to re-fuel in Bude!

Further afield

If you would like to explore a bit further afield, the coastal scenery around Tintagel and Bossiney Bay is particularly beautiful. There is a car park at Bossiney Haven from where you can walk down to the beach which is well worth a visit at low tide. Or you can follow a circular walk from here to the spectacular Rocky Valley. Try the National Trust’s walk  https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/tintagel-old-post-office/trails/rocky-valley-walk. There are walks in the woodland around St Nectan’s Glen with its waterfall http://www.st-nectansglen.co.uk/. These walks all have enough to keep children interested. For a longer walk you can follow the coastal path from Tintagel to Rocky Valley and back along the road.

 

Walks from Marhamchurch

We are at the top of the hill so it is downhill at the start for most of the walks from Marhamchurch, but unfortunately upwards on the way back. If we are walking with our youngest child (aged 5) we usually cheat and park the car in the village.  From the car park it takes around 45 minutes to get to Widemouth Bay and about the same into Bude. Widemouth is over the fields and a bit hilly. Bude is along the tow path which is nice and flat with plenty of distractions for tired children. In Marhamchurch itself there is a pretty walk along the river, the Hele Valley trail. Toby is particularly keen on a quick dip in the river.

Dog friendly facilities

If you are looking for dog friendly holidays in North Cornwall the Bude area is a good place to start. There are dog-friendly pubs and cafes in the Bude area, including the village pub, the Bullers Arms http://www.thebullersarmshotel.com/. Some beaches have restrictions on dogs from Easter to the end of September but there are local beaches where dogs are allowed all year round, including Black Rock, Northcott Mouth and Summerleaze (on leads at Summerleaze). Our cottages

We accept dogs in all of our cottages. Parsons and the Farmhouse both have an enclosed garden. We do ask guests to keep their dogs under control on site as there are other dogs, children and animals around. If you want to go further afield without your dog one day, there are boarding kennels nearby which will provide doggy day care or a short stay. Cottages for two

We have three cottages for two, all refurbished over the last two years. Our cosy cottages are located away from the family cottages and the pool, overlooking our fields. Each cottage has a double bedroom, shower room and living area with fully equipped kitchen. We offer short breaks in our cottages for two all year round, except July-mid September.  May and June are a good time of year to visit Cornwall, before the summer rush.  There are long evenings, glorious sunsets and the coastal scenery is particularly beautiful with wild flowers. Our rural site is well located if you want to explore Cornwall. It is less than 10 minutes’ drive to Bude and Widemouth Bay. We are a few minutes from the A39.

Spring is in the air.

Spring is in the air – hopefully. As I write this Storm Doris is howling round the house, bringing gales and lots of rain. However, we are now into February and this week I have seen lots of snowdrops and a few primroses.

The first daffodils are out, although the wind will probably flatten them tonight. It definitely feels warmer this week when I am walking our puppy (who is now  in the naughty toddler stage), despite the wind.

Our hens have started laying again as well. Unfortunately, we had a visit from the fox at the end of November. The cheeky thing had three of our newest hens. The others went on strike, except for one who laid an egg every day all through December. However, now the days are getting longer we are getting more eggs each week. Good for baking!

While we are quiet we are busy trying to fit in work to update the cottages, with the help of our local builder /handy man and his daughter . They have started taking off the rendering on the outside of our lovely Farmhouse, revealing a lot of old stone wall which we are re-pointing. This is a very time consuming and painstaking job, not helped by the winter weather. We are also re-fitting bathrooms in the Farmhouse and Manor, doing some decorating and laying new flooring.

This week I booked the local pool maintenance company to re-open our pool at the end of March, ready for Easter! Only a couple of months to go now and hopefully we will see some sunshine. If not, you can always hide in the hot tub.

Happy New Year to all our past and future guests! We’ve had a busy Christmas and New Year with lots of guests enjoying the hot tub, tennis court and local beaches.

 

 

 

 

 

This is a beautiful stretch of beach between Crooklets in Bude and Northcott Mouth. When the tide is out, you can walk all along the coast from Bude to Sandymouth. The beaches and cliffs are spectacular and you can also see parts of the wreck of the Belem just beyond Northcott. Then walk back along the cliffs on the coastal path to take in the views. We had a puppy in June so we have spent the second half of 2016 discovering some great walks around this beautiful, but hilly,  part of North Cornwall.

October half term 2016

Are you looking for a self-catering break over October half term 2016? We have cottages sleeping 2, 4, 5 and 6 available on our beautiful rural site near Bude in North Cornwall for the week or a short break (min 3 nights). There is plenty to do around Bude with lots of beautiful beaches to explore, watersports, walking and cycle paths. Tintagel, Clovelly and Boscastle are all a short drive away. Further afield the Eden Project, Padstow and Lanhydrock are within an hour’s drive. On site we have a kids’ play area (including football and trampoline), a games room, tennis court and hot tub.

Self -catering short breaks near Bude, in North Cornwall. We offer short breaks in our self-catering cottages throughout the Autumn and winter (except the family cottages for the week from 22 October). Our cosy cottages are well-equipped and ideal for a weekend away with friends or family. There is lots to do on site with our hot tub, tennis court, games room and play area available. We are close to the beautiful North Cornish coast so you can enjoy walks on empty beaches at this time of year or explore the coastal path. Our three largest cottages have log burners, perfect for cooler evenings.

Summer in Bude

Hoorah! Is summer here in Bude, or nearly? We’ve had some warm weather this weekend and a couple of trips to the beach, including a dip in the Bude sea pool at Summerleaze beach and the first body boarding session of the year for the kids yesterday. Looking forward to plenty more.  We had a nice lunch at the Olive Tree by the canal in Bude today, followed by a walk down the canal and across the bridge to the breakwater. If you are feeling energetic you can hire a pedalo or a rowing boat to explore the canal in the summer. There are lots of places to eat along the wharf and we are waiting for Bude’s first restaurant in a barge to open as well.  At the end of the canal if the tide is out you can either cross over the bridge to Summerleaze or walk over to the breakwater. The breakwater is one of my favourite spots in Bude and it is always popular with the kids, who love scrambling over the rocks and exploring the pools. It is fun in all weather – good for watching the waves when the sea is rough and the tide is in, provided you don’t get too close! However today the tide was way out so we were able to get down onto the sand on the other side of the Breakwater from Summerleaze beach. It was almost empty, a great stretch of sand to run around on and lots of anemones in the rock pools.

Cottages for two

We have three cosy cottages for two in a beamed barn conversion. The cottages overlook our fields, down to the sea, perfect for a peaceful and relaxing break. Set away from the pool and play area, our cottages for two were refurbished in 2015 with new shower rooms. Each cottage has a double bedroom, shower room and living area with well-equipped kitchen, TV, DVD and wifi. Two of our cottages for two are suitable for couples with a baby. We have a hot tub and tennis court on site (open all year) and a heated outdoor pool (Easter-end September). Short breaks are available most of the year (except July-mid September).   We are in a quiet, rural location, close to the beautiful North Cornish coast, surfing beaches, the South West coastal path and the small seaside town of Bude. We are dog friendly.

 

 

 

Late availability for Easter 25 March - 9 April

Not long now until we open our pool ready for the school Easter holidays from 25 March! The water will be nice and warm, but no promises about the weather. Fingers crossed for some sunshine. We have some cottages available over Easter, including short breaks.

Summer 2016

We’re looking forward to summer 2016 and hopefully some better weather, spring flowers and maybe even blue sky and sunshine.  Our pool will open late March ready for the Easter holidays. The family cottages are getting busy for the school holidays but we do have some availability (see the dates below or check our online calendar). We have plenty of availability for couples and short breaks or longer holidays for bigger groups outside the main school holidays. We offer short breaks (minimum 2 nights) outside July – mid September and the main school holidays.

Woodburner weather - winter breaks in North Cornwall

There is a definite chill in the air now in the mornings. We’ve been having some beautiful sunny weather,  great for walking on the coastal path. We’ve closed the pool now until next Easter which always makes me feel that the end of summer has definitely arrived.  On the plus side, this is a good time of year for warming up in the hot tub or by the woodburner after a bracing walk on the beach. Woodburners are available in three of our cottages – Manor, Parsons and the Farmhouse. If you are looking for a winter break we offer short breaks (minimum 2 nights) from November to March.

October half term - 24-31 October 2015

We have some availability in cottages for two, including short breaks.  FAMILY COTTAGES ARE NOW ALL BOOKED FOR THE WEEK. Close to the beautiful North Cornwall coast and Bude. Surfing, other watersports and pony trekking available locally. We have a tennis court, hot tub, games room and play area on site.

Food festivals September- October 2015

There are lots of foody events over the next month, starting with the second Bude for Food festival 18-20 September. Last year’s event was a great day out, with lots of lovely food and a good atmosphere, helped by fantastic late September sunshine.

The Boscastle Food, Arts and Crafts Festival runs over the weekend of 3-4 October. Further afield, the Eden Project is less crowded out of season and there is lots going on between 10-27 September at the Eden Project Festival of Food  followed by the Eden Project Beer Festival  on 3 October. Short breaks available (minimum 2 nights) in our cottages in September and October.
