It has been some time since I last wrote something on here. I've been busy with work, writing, and even managed to direct a short film I wrote.

Yup. A short film. I'm excited about it as it is my first. The cast and crew were great. It was such an incredible experience and look forward to future projects.

Clash of the Titans - Review

I recently watched the remake of this classic. I loved the original. And having read many reviews that were not favorable to the remake, I must say that I really enjoyed the film. Granted it did not follow the classic film, but it held it's own. It left out a lot of the elements that the original had. I didn't find that it detracted from the overall quality of it.

The major difference between the two was that the original took you on more of a journey than did the remake. But, that's OK.

I didn't see it see in 3D, so I was distracted by that hype.

One must keep in mind, this story is from Greek mythology. And Greek mythology which is up for interpretation and the stories themselves are not concrete; there are variations to them. That is the frame of mind that I had going into the film. I know for many enthusiasts, this film may not have hit the mark. I'm not a mythology Nazi, nor a am I a scholar of that realm. What I am is a lover of a good story. This was a good story, in my opinion.

So if you haven't seen it, give it a look. I recommend it. It's worth that nearly two hours. Then watch the original again to see the differences.

Is it possible Jim Morrison faked his own death?

It's possible. Highly unlikely.

However, in Tom Dicillo's "When You're Strange" (the documentary about the Doors I wrote about here) it begins with an undertone that perhaps Morrison had staged his own death. You get that feeling that maybe, just maybe... I believe that is great film-making on Dicillo's part.

Give the appearance of another reality and fixate on that thought by feeding it at intervals convincing the watcher there's something to it. Did this just make sense? Well, it was sounding good in my head. This film really gave an impression of something that wasn't. And I was second-guessing. But then, Dicillo wraps it up at the end. He brings you back to earth.

This film was very well done. It encapsulates the legendary rock band that is The Doors. Filled with rare footage, we get a great view as if we were there.

The Doors: A rock band that was way before their time. They set the stage for music. The Who, The Rolling Stones, and the shitty Beatles, don't hold a match to what the Doors did in only fifty-four months. Jim's IQ was higher than all three of those bands combined.

And what made them great...

"None of their songs has been used in a car commercial."

Will this be the last season for Entourage?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say yes.

This season (7) started off with Vince taking a risk and engaging in a stunt for his latest movie. In the very next episode he takes yet another risk, skydiving. I get that the writers are showing a new and blossoming side to Vince, but I'm feeling as if this might be the set up for something far greater than we can see right now.

Entourage is by far my favorite show on television. What makes this show so intriguing to me is it deals with an industry I long to be part of - at least the "behind the scenes" area where writers, producers, and directors dwell.

At any rate...

When I began watching the first episode of this season I had these thoughts, "Something's going to happen. This may be the last season." Then I began pondering: Will they kill Vince in some tragic manner leaving this gaping hole in every viewer? Will it be on a movie set or with him doing some crazy stunt on his own? Will that putz who whines to E at the agency have something to do with it? Or, will Vince be tragically injured to the point he can't walk and he has another come back and it tanks which leads to the itself coming to an end?

Yeah, yeah. I know. Vince lives after jumping from a plane. I watched the previews. I'm not talking about now. I'm talking about all of what is happening as the set up for what is about to happen. You follow?

I'd hate to see this show come to an end, but if it does, I hope they go out in style. We all remember another great show that ended up going out on a black screen. I don't think Wahlberg would allow that with Entourage.

I've even read rumors (not concrete) that there is talk of turning the show into a movie. They did it with "Sex and The City", Entourage would blow that out of the water.

We'll see how this season turns out. But I'm sticking to my guns: This will be the last season of Entourage.

The Great Buck Howard - Review

Starring John Malkovich, Colin Hanks, Emily Blunt, and Tom Hanks.

Pleasantly surprised is how I sum up this movie.

The movie is about a washed up "mentalist" or "magician" (Malkovich), and his manager (Colin Hanks).

Here I am searching on Netflix online for a movie to watch. I'm looking for something with substance and will make me laugh. I searched high and low reading each synopsis carefully. I put this one on the back burner while I searched. Nothing was peaking my interest. So, I settled on this one. I'm glad I did. It far exceeded my expectations.

Troy (Colin Hanks) doesn't want to continue doing what his dad wants him to do, so he ventures out on his own landing a job managing Buck Howard. I'm not going to give away anymore than that.

There are some surprises in the story. Malkovich is always great to watch. And Colin Hanks is up and coming and far exceeds his dad's ability. I just hope for Colin that being the son of Tom Hanks doesn't overshadow his quality of acting and the recognition thereof.

I highly recommended this film. It's worth the time and the money.

Hot Tub Time Machine - Review

Starring John Cusack, and a few others on the B-list. Oh, and that dude who played Marty Mcfly's dad in Back To The Future.

This is your quintessential stoner movie.

Albeit lame, there was some humor to it. A total bite of "Back to the Future (BTF)", but entertaining nonetheless. If this movie can get made in Hollywood, anything lame can get made.

It followed many of the same theories as BTF. I thought the whole concept of following along in the same path as they did in 1986 was good twist on the idea of going back in time. But, then they realize big things can happen in the future if the tweak the current time period. So, they allow a few things to happen while changing the course of history in others.

Overall, yeah, watch this flick. Far from an Oscar contender. Mind candy in the very least. Simply, it's a story of "what if".

Revolutionary Road - Review

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Adapted from a Richard Yates novel by the same name, this story is set in the 1950's telling the tale of a young couple struggling to make their way in life.

I never read the novel and never knew the story. I had expectations prior to seeing the film. My expectations were filled with there being a happy ending. And throughout the film I was hoping for this to end on a positive note. This is because I wanted to see this type of film. I will say, not all stories have there nice little endings. And rightly so. Life isn't always about pomp and circumstance.

There is a raw tone throughout that is precisely captured. I did enjoy a real look at the past. It was interesting to see this young couple try to make their way through the ups and downs of life. I got something I wasn't expecting.

Kate Winslet's performance was off in the beginning. It seemed as though she was forcing her acting. But as the story progressed, her acting turned out well. In the first ten minutes, I thought that perhaps this film was thrown together and that she was just doing this to bide her time in between other projects. But, I was later impressed by her emotion.

DiCaprio maintained. His performance was real from start to finish.

Having seen these two together in Titanic could have set up the expectations I had thinking that they would live happily ever after in this film. Either way, I think they did well working together on this film. Winslet had a look that almost made me think it was someone other than she. This added to the meshing of these two actors.

Overall, I enjoyed this film. I wouldn't watch it again. But, it was worth seeing it for the first time.

500 Days of Summer - Review

My response to this film: Guard your heart.

How easily we can get wrapped up in a relationship. So much that it blinds us to everything going on around us. We miss the details. But then comes that moment of clarity when we finally get to see the big picture and our perception of things is opened to the point where we see the real meaning behind what just smacked us across the face. This is what I took from this film.

Avoiding a typical chronology, this film bounces back and forth from good days and not so good days of the main character, Tom and his quasi-relationship with the woman of his dreams, Summer.

I was hooked into this film within the first five minutes. Setting the tone, the narrator states that this is not a love story. At least for me, not in the conventional sense. This is one man's pursuit of love, but finds it in a rather unorthodox way.

I really enjoyed the back and forth from day to day that swept through this story. The film really allows for the viewer to be engaged. And in the end, if you've been following, it comes together nicely. Great execution, by far.

I highly recommend this film. It'll make you laugh while slowing you down to feel Tom's highs and lows.

Great story telling, indeed.

Not to mention, the soundtrack kicks butt.

In The Name Of The Father - Review

As one of my friends recently said of this film,

Very strong possibility that this is the most overlooked/underrated film of all time. The beginning where he is on the roof humming Hendrix and the crescendo of the song is matched with the gunfire going off sets the tone. I still get goose bumps at that part...

I have to agree. The only way I knew this movie ever existed was when I was researching Daniel Day-Lewis making note of his films that I was going to watch when I could get them.

Daniel Day-Lewis is always stellar in his movies. That goes without saying.

This film chronicles the true story of Gerry Conlon (Day-Lewis) and how he, his father, Gerry's friends and numerous family members are accused of an IRA bombing in England. The British police beat a confession out of each person. Subsequently, they were tried and found guilty. It was only after the true bomber came forward and an attorney, having discovered this information, set out to free the "Guilford Four".

I highly recommend this film as it was extremely engaging from start to finish.

How can a person who has never sat as a judge be qualified to sit as a judge on the Supreme Court? Isn't that like making a fifty year old alter boy the Pope?

Avatar - Review

Well folks, Avatar is out on DVD. And it didn't take long. I guess James Cameron wanted to rake in a quick payday off the box office success. A success measured only in a dollar amount because this film missed the mark, just as I thought it would.

Back when Avatar came out, I was convinced that this movie was a sham. The previews were visually stimulating, I'll say that. But, the story seemed to be, well, not having any depth. I'm glad I waited for the DVD avoiding the 3D distraction.

Ten minutes into the film I really wanted to turn it off. But, I had to watch it all the way through to see how lousy of a direction it went and so I could write this with some credibility. These first ten minutes are crucial for the remainder of the story. And the acting didn't lend itself to this crucial ten minutes in that it was contrived.

Sigourney Weaver's first lines were awful. It came across as forced. Maybe it's me and I've seen her in too many of these alien-type movies? Her performance cringed my stomach.

Sam Worthington wasn't any better. He's really making a name for himself in the cheese arena. I was turned off by the narration. It seemed detectivish; much like Sin City. It worked for Sin City, but not this.

I had another problem with this story: here you have these well advanced people who travel distances throughout space and they have such primitive looking machines on the ground and in the air. That seemed strange to me. It didn't feel authentic.

Overall, I think Avatar basically sucked; basically. I felt rushed with character development. One minute Jake is a gung-ho marine, the next he wants to be an alien. Sounds to me like he sold his soul for a pair of legs.

The writing was lousy hence why it didn't come close to winning best screenplay. And I'm doubly glad it didn't win best picture; you can wrap special effects around an overdone story line, it still wont put it at the top.

Do I recommend this? Sure. Why not. Just form your own opinion. It's a crappy movie. See it before everyone forgets about it so you can share said opinion.

Alcholics Anonymous And The New World Order: Glenn Beck's Cracked Foundation Mired in A Progressive Movement

Glenn Beck for years now has spoken out against numerous political issues affecting our country. He has informed Americans from a historical perspective. Founded upon fact, he exposes many lies within the government. And it would seem on the surface that he does his research. But, I may have found a crack in his foundation. In fact, I have.

Glenn Beck, the other day on his Fox News show, said two things which got me thinking: AA meeting and higher power. While Glenn Beck is entertaining, he is more so influential. I am watching him now, as a matter of fact. I think a lot of what he says has merit. But, I am questioning his stance for he is leaving out one organization having its roots and ties to things un-American.

We all know Beck has had his struggles in life and in his career in radio. He is open about his bout with drinking alcohol to excess. So much that it was ruining his life. Then he got help and overcame this problem. In overcoming it, he has turned out to be quite successful. This is to be applauded. Many of us have had our bouts with drinking to excess. But, one thing I have discovered, AA is not the way in which to go about it. Keeping in mind the history of this organization, AA has slipped under the radar of many Americans as we seek to find a way to battle that which keeps us in bondage. There is a way out. But this is not what this about. Perhaps I will touch on that later. Better yet, I implore you to research for yourself. Don't take my word for it.

Bill Wilson, AA's co-founder, was a businessman. He sought after things that would make him successful and adorned by his peers. Whether or not he was receiving what he sought after, he drank. His drinking became so obsessive that it nearly drove him to death. Wilson needed help. He began searching earnestly, going to different people seeking answers. One of whom was Carl Jung.

In searching for this way to stay sober, Wilson befriended a man named Dr. Bob. Thus began the founding of what we know as AA. Cutting out the details, and going right to the chase, where this gets dicey is what these two men dabbled in. Dr. Bob, claimed to be a devout Christian; he did read the Bible. However, his practices were anything other than. As for Wilson, he denied many things regarding Christianity. As a mater of fact, he more or less, picked and choose as if ordering from a salad bar. I say this for there are many out there, AA apologists, who claim that Alcoholics Anonymous was founded upon Christian principles and it's founders were also Christian. This is far from the truth. In fact, Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob were no more Christian than the current "New Agers".

Herein lies the dilemma: AA was founded upon New Age principles purporting to be Christian in nature. One such church at the forefront of this new age movement, and has so for years, are the Universalist Unitarians who, in practice, deny much of what true Christianity stands for. The Universalists also pick and choose to their own liking and according to their own will, not the will of God. But this isn't a dissecting of theological standpoints. It is a dissecting of Glenn Beck and his cracked foundation for his involvement with AA and not seeing the fallacy that exists with this organization.

Having already been deemed a "religious institution" by the Supreme Court, numerous governmental entities require citizens to attend AA meetings via a court instated means. On the surface it may appear that this is an effective way to reform an individual from incessant violations with regard to alcohol and drugs. But, if you dig, even a little, you will notice that this is part of a greater means; to indoctrinate people into a "New Age", "progressive" movement. Period.

As I watch Beck, he speaks well of the progressive movement and how it's destroying the American way of life. I also hear him talk about how the progressives are removing God from everyday life. Why has he yet to dissect for himself and the sake of others, how AA is part of this progressive movement? He has the means to conduct the extensive research. My thought is that it touches on such a wounded subject that to expose it would push people from his current agenda. Don't get me wrong, I think he does well at breaking things down and informing people of what is really going on in this country. However, his footing is not solid for reasons to which I've already discussed.

So, I challenge you Mr. Beck, to do your homework on the history of AA and who they were involved with (Rockefeller strike a nerve with you?). You will find how quietly AA has snuck into the American life purporting to be helping when in reality it is part of a greater whole pulling us closer to a one world government under a one world religion. If this isn't progressive in fact, I don't know what is. Mr. Beck, do us all a favor, including yourself, shore up your own foundation before someone begins to use this against you. Because if you haven't, a lack of consistency may very well undo much of what you put on TV and radio. That would be sad for America.

Hachi: A Dog's Tale - Review

Based on a real dog named Hachi from Japan, this story re-tells the tale of a loyal Akita that waits for its master even after the master dies.

This film was truly beautiful. The camera work was brilliant. The acting was emotionally driven. And the story had tremendous depth. Hachi is an instant tear-jerker.

A great film for family movie night. Rated G.

Serpico - Review

The year was 1973; seven months prior to my birth, Al Pacino starred in a classic entitled "Serpico". Truth be known, I didn't even know the movie existed until I'd seen the reference to it in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". I'm glad I'm now in the loop.

The one thing that bothered me about the film was the random voice-overs. I didn't get it. Other than that, I thought this film was fantastic.

Based on real life New York cop, Frank Serpico, this story tells of how he uncovered serious corruption within the ranks and how he endured the back lash from fellow officers for not wanting to be part of this corruption. Al Pacino's portrayal gripped me from start to finish. Classic Pacino.

If anyone be a lover of classic films, I highly recommend this one.

"Shutter Island" Shut My Eyelids

I waited for the DVD; I'm glad I did. This movie would have been the waste of money and time in the theater. Thank you Netflix for the free month subscription.

Having expectations of a movie prior to seeing it can up the ante for a big let down. Half my friends who had seen it, liked it, outright; the other half, hated it, outright. I wanted to believe all those who liked it. After all, we're talking Scorsese and DiCaprio. These two work well together. Therein lies my expectation for a great film. But...

The film is based on the novel of the same name by writer Dennis Lehane. I didn't read it. I'm sure it's a far better read than watching this slowly dripping dribble boring the big screen.

Laeta Kalogridis wrote the screenplay for this. Adapting a novel for the screen can be an arduous task, so I hear. Haven't done it yet. Perhaps I wont.

The story sets up the viewer real well, I'll say that. But then as it moves along it takes these weird twists. Twists that lack any real suspense. The set up failed to pay off with a thrill.

This film received more hype than it was due. I really thought it was going to grip me. Aside from the overall story falling short, the acting in it was good. DiCaprio's emotional turns are authentic. Ben Kingsley was a treat to watch as always. I enjoy his acting. So, there are a few positives with this film. If you gotta watch it, watch it for the acting performances alone. Not for the story.

At the end of the film, I was left feeling empty. Not that I wanted a "happily ever after" ending, but there seemed to be more to this story than how it ended. It left me with a lot of unanswered questions. If this is what the intention was, then it was a success.

Kick Ass, Kicked Ass

It was a pleasurable delight to have finally watched "Kick Ass". After reading the reviews, pro and con, I now can say with certainty, Roger Ebert is a schmuck.

I agree the movie is violent, hence the rating. But, it's a movie. It's just a fucking movie, Roger. Addressing another comment made by Ebert that the movie is laced with vulgarities; yeah, so? I actually found it to be lighter than other movies. That's how kids talk. That's how we talked among friends when I was young.

Enough of that. Let's give the film some justice.

When a film sticks to your senses a day or more after seeing it, in my opinion, it was a film worth every minute of my time and the time I'll spend watching it again. "Kick Ass" is replete with purely raw emotion. From start to finish.

What kid hasn't thought about wanting to be a superhero to right the wrongs of punks who threaten the lively hood of ordinary people. I know I wanted to dress up like Spider-Man and beat the crap out of the school bully. But I didn't. Dave Lizewski did on the screen what most kids want to do, but in reality would be ludicrous to attempt. This is fantasy. Sometimes it's a good thing to get lost in the what ifs in life while keeping it to the big screen. That's what good story telling is all about. I don't seeing people running around like Beowulf hunting as he did. And that story is older than most of can even fathom.

I was intrigued by the resiliency of the young Mindy. Her personality is infectious. You can't help but to cheer her on right to the very end.

The little twists in the plot aided the depth of the emotional appeal. I wont give anything away in case you haven't seen it, but let me say, not showing something is a great way to set up a huge pay off later. But how will it pay off. Go rent "Kick Ass" to find out.

At the end of the movie, I wanted more. It was obvious where the opening are for a sequel. And after brief research at IMDB, there may a sequel: Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall.

I give this movie a round of applause.

Synopsis: The comedy “Dinner for Schmucks” tells the story of Tim (Paul Rudd), an up-and-coming executive who has just received his first invitation to the "dinner for idiots," a monthly event hosted by his boss that promises bragging rights (and maybe more) to the exec that shows up with the biggest buffoon. Tim's fiancée, Julie, finds it distasteful and Tim agrees to skip the dinner, until he bumps into Barry (Steve Carell) – an IRS employee who devotes his spare time to building elaborate taxidermy mouse dioramas – and quickly realizes he's struck idiot gold. Tim can't resist, and invites Barry, whose blundering good intentions soon sends Tim's life into a frenzied downward spiral and a series of comic misadventures, threatening a major business deal, bringing crazy stalker ex-girlfriend, Darla, back into Tim's life and driving Julie (or so Tim thinks) into the arms of another man.
