Nokia N900 the handset that doesn't run on Symbian, but instead is powered by a Debian Linux distribution. I felt a bit ecstatic at first after i read the phone specification, for starters the handset is very expensive, but for its price, its got all the features you can think of, so what exactly is this little linux handset capable of?<br />

The operating system is called Maemo, which is a software platform developed by Nokia for smartphones and Internet Tablets. Maemo is based on a slimmed down Debian Linux distribution with a Monolithic kernel, the GUI is baed on the X-Window system and the Matchbox window manager which limits the screen to showing a single windows at a time.<br />

What i like about this phone, and why i'd choose the N900 over an iPhone is simply the fact that it runs on Linux. You don't need to Jailbreak to install unsupported applications which the iPhone needs! Plus, bin/bash goodness, yes, the Terminal! "sudo gainroot" terminal command will grant you root access which means you can get down to business. What about software? Well, it can run existing linux programs, and any free and open-source third paty applications, thats just awesome, will it run openoffice? Yes!<br />
