Tom and Jerry, two of the most honored cartoon characters in motion pictures, were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Their plot centered on a never-ending battle, in other words, a chase between a housecat and a brown mouse. The Hanna- Barbera duo had written and directed 114 Tom and Jerry cartoons from 1940 to 1957, at the MGM cartoon studio in Hollywood. The pair won a total of 7 Oscar awards for Best Animated Short Subject, more than any other character-based theatrical animated series. The series has also been named as the ‘Greatest Television Shows of All Time’ by TIME, in 2000. Tom and Jerry was also placed at the 66^th position, in the ‘Top 100 Animated TV Shows’ by IGN, in January 2009. Joseph Barbera, a storyman and character designer, paired up with an experienced director, William Hanna to create a cat-and-mouse cartoon. The first cartoon was titled ‘Puss Gets the Boot’ and it released in theatres on February 10, 1940. Having lost to another MGM cartoon at the Academy Awards, Hanna and Barbera held a contest to give the cat and mouse a new name and look. Animator John Carr won the contest, with his suggestion of Tom and Jerry. The series went into production and eventually, Hanna and Barbera went on to direct only the cat-and-mouse cartoon, for the rest of their tenure at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

The main protagonist, Tom was a blue-grey longhair cat while Jerry, the second protagonist, was a small & brown, house mouse. The physical appearances of both Tom and Jerry were evolved over the years. The series developed into a quicker, more energetic tone. Though the original theme of the series, cat chases mouse, remained the same, Hanna and Barbera came up with numerous variations on this theme. The final shot of Hanna and Barbera was ‘Tot Watchers’, which released on August 1, 1958, after the MGM cartoon studio closed down in 1957. Later, Hanna and Barbera opened up their own television studio, Hanna-Barbera Productions, in 1957 and went on to produce various famous TV shows and movies.

In 1960, Czech-based animation director, Gene Deitch from Rembrandt Films was contracted by MGM to produce new Tom and Jerry shorts. A total of 13 shorts were released under this contract. These episodes were not very favorably received by the general audience. In the early 1963, Chuck Jones, who was fired from Warner Bros. Cartoons, started his own animation studio and produced a total of 34 Tom and Jerry shorts. The main characters were given a changed appearance, with Tom getting thicker eyebrows, a less complex look, sharper ears and furrier cheeks. Jerry got larger eyes and ears, a lighter brown color and a sweeter Porky Pig-like expression. The year 1965 saw the Hanna and Barbera cartoon series airing on television, in heavily edited form.

The Jones series featured Mammy Two-Shoes. Eventually, she was replaced by a fat White Irish woman, as in ‘Saturday Evening Puss’. The series were translated into various foreign languages, since it had almost no dialogues. It started broadcasting in Japan in 1964. In 1930, a company known as “Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH” was founded by Professor Ferdinand Porsche with its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. The company formerly dealt with motor vehicle development work and consultation and did not produce cars under its brand. It was only after the German government offer that the company produced a car for the people, Volkswagen. It was then that the market saw the entrance of the Volkswagen Beetle, a car design that is cherished till date. Porsche 64 was the first Porsche produced in 1939, using components of the Volkswagen Beetle. Volkswagen diverted its production towards the military version of the Beetle, the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen during World War II. Porsche also designed several heavy tanks for the war, but lost the contract to Henschel & Son. However, the chassis designed by Porsche did not go waste, as it was used as a base for the Elefant tank destroyer.

At the end of World War II, in 1945, the Volkswagen factory at Wolfsburg was undertaken by the British. The chairman of the board of management, Ferdinand was replaced by a British Army Major, Ivan Hirst. Furthermore, Ferdinand was arrested on the context of war crimes and served a 20-month imprisonment. Meanwhile, his son, Ferry Porsche decided to build his own car, as he was unable to find a car in the market that matched his preference. He built a model of the second Porsche, 356, in a small sawmill in Gmünd, Austria. Production began after the prototype was exhibited to German auto dealers and pre-orders were taken. Most car enthusiasts consider the 356 model, as the first Porsche, since it was the first model sold by the company. The car received the road certification in 1948.

Ferdinand Porsche died at the age of 76, due to complications following a stroke. Since there was short of supply of parts, the 356 model was made using parts from the Volkswagen Beetle including internal combustion engine, transmission and suspension. Eventually, the 356 model underwent several stages of development, where the Volkswagen parts were replaced by Porsche-made parts. All the Porsche designs featured air-cooled rear-engine configurations from the very start. All the Porsche models were given sequential numbers like 356, 550, etc. with the 901 nomenclature been given to racing models such as 904, 906, 908. In 1964, the company launched another air-cooled rear-engined sports car, the Porsche 911 with a six-cylinder boxer engine.

Schutz in the early 1980s, who was further replaced by Arno Bohn, former manager of German computer company, Nixdorf Computer AG, in 1988. Porsche signed a memorandum of understanding with Toyota in 1990 to learn the Japanese production methods. Till date, Porsche is being assisted by Toyota with hybrid technology. Heinz Branitzki, a longtime Porsche employee took over the position of CEO after Bohn was dismissed. Heinz served the company until 1993 when Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking took over.

Time was measured by the shadows formed from the sundials. Also, there were hourglasses that measured time by predictable rates of sand moving through a narrow channel. Interesting & Amazing Information On Origin & Background Of WatchesBefore 1600, driving power was the main problem in portable timekeeping. The timepieces were driven by weights and therefore were impractical to transport on one person. In 1524, the first pocket watch was created by Peter Henlein in Germany. Other watches appeared in 1548 that were of either French or German origin. After 1575, more products were produced in Switzerland and England. This period came to known as one of great advancement and innovation in the horological industry. Initially, the first movements were made of steel and later on, of brass. They did not have balance springs and were notoriously inaccurate. These watches had only an hour hand and had to be wound twice daily.

Subsequently, spiral leaf mainspring appeared which came as the greatest innovation as it allowed long-term power without weights. The accuracy of the timepieces could be improved by using a limited portion of the mainspring since there was a difference in timing between the long arcs and the short arcs. Although Germany produced a watch with a cam at the end of the barrel arbor, it was England and France who used the fusee. The fusees stopped the watch during winding to prevent over-oscillation of the balance wheel. Stops were also included as regulators.

In 1600s, form watches having cases shaped like animals and objects became popular. They were also available in religious themes. Watches were considered more like pieces of jewelry even though very few technical improvements took place. Rubies were first used in 1704 in watch movements to create more accurate time pieces. To make the watch dials more visible in low light, enamel was used in 1750. In 1780, Abraham Perrelet invented the first self-winding movement while, in 1820, Thomas Prest registered a patent for a self-winding watch.

In America, the first watch was manufactured by Luther Goddard of Shrewsbuy, Massachussetts in 1809. The well-known Omega Watch Company was first opened by Louis Brandt as a workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848. Around 1850, the Americans finally went into mass production of watches with mixed results. The main companies for the same were Waltham, Elgin and Hamilton. In 1884, Greenwich, also named as the zero meridian, in England was accepted worldwide as the starting point for global time zones. Finally, after 1900, different advancements were made in metallurgy to improve the mechanism since the balance spring was sensitive to temperature and position. Self-compensating balances were introduced having bi-metallic properties to compensate for high and low temperatures. Eventually, a balance that could compensate for middle temperature errors was created.

In 1905, Hans Wildorf , started the Rolex Watch Company. In 1914, the first wrist watch with an alarm was created. The Seiko was started in Tokyo by Kinttaro Hattori in 1924. Prior to 1930s, various efforts were made by auto makers in manufacturing simple cars that could be afforded even by the middle class, but none found any success. Most of the cars ended up costing more than an average man’s yearly wage, even after being designed in a simple manner to meet the basic transportation needs. However, Ferdinand Porsche set up an automotive design company called Porsche Buro in 1930. The company came up with an independent front suspension system, consisting of transversely mounted torsion bars, connected to two trailing arms on each side. This suspension was lighter than most others of that time.

In 1933, Hitler met Ferdinand to design a Volkswagen. He proposed an idea for a car that could seat 5 people, cruise up to 62 mph, return 33 mpg, and cost only 1000 Reich Marks ($ 250). This was an excellent opportunity for Ferdinand to push up the small car idea forward and help the citizens of Germany afford a car. Porsche designated this design as Type 60, which was later changed to V1. Hitler proposed for a convertible version, which was designated as V2. However, Porsche was not able to build the first two prototypes, which were only completed in 1935. The V1 design was upgraded and came to be known as VW3. This model had metal floors, swing axle rear transmissions, front independent suspensions and backbone floorpans. The engine chosen for the car was cheaper and reliable.

The next version VW30 was created and a total of 30 cars were produced. Eventually, many VW38s and VW39s were produced, which had front hinged doors, split windows in the rear, larger hoods and other differences. During World War II, an amphibious vehicle known as Type 166: the Schwimmwagen was produced. This vehicle was powered by a 25 hp engine and had a retractable ducted propeller in the rear, for use in water. Also, a simple military vehicle known as Type 82: Kübelwagen was also produced that came to be known as the Germany’s jeep. It had a flat-sided body that increased ground clearance. Some less than 16,000 Schwimmwagens and over 50,000 Kübelwagens were produced during the war.

In 1949, after Heinrich Nordhoff was appointed as the senior executive of Volkswagen, the company took a new turn, which proved to be fruitful. Production increased steadily and in late 1949, a new concept for a utility/ transport vehicle came up. 1950 saw the birth of VW transporter. Volkswagen cars were now being transported to other European countries like Denmark, Sweden, Luxemburg, Belgium and Switzerland. The company moved on to South Africa, where it started producing Beetles in the early 1950s. Volkswagen transporters did not gain as much popularity as Beetles. As a result, in the first 5 years of production, there were 4 times fewer buses built when compared to Beetles.

Volkswagen went global by building factories in other countries like England, South Africa, Brazil and Australia. Every year, the Beetle saw minor changes in itself.
