The Indian or Vedic calendar is lunar based, unlike the Gregorian calendar. The observances during each month are usually spiritually or religiously based and rooted in deep tradition.

Sunday, September 30, 2012 marks the beginning of two weeks of Pitru Paksha (Pitt-true Puck-shuh), or Shraadh, which is a time dedicated to honoring our ancestors. This includes our blood relatives as well as significant teachers in our lives. It’s a time of remembrance and of offering our gratitude. Indians participate in special rituals and rites during this time. There are specific chants and mantras which are recited during this period.

This is a time when individuals focus on their spiritual practices and meditation. It is typically not a time to commence new ventures or to enter into new agreements. Air travel should also be minimized as much as possible, unless it is for spiritual purposes (i.e. a pilgrimage).

Families pay homage to relatives who have passed on and they do so on the specific phase of the moon (the tithi) which coincides with the day that the person left his/ her body. Special meals are also prepared for these days, according to tradition. Offerings are made to ancestors at the bank of a river.

Pitru Paksha commences on the first day of the waxing (dark phase) Moon in the Vedic lunar month of Bhadrapada each year. Pitru Paksha continues through October 14th for Hawaii, Pacific, Mountain and Central time zones of North America) (or 15th for Eastern time zone in North America and other parts of the world). The festival of Navaratri follows Pitru Paksha.

Eating food with the hands in today’s Western society can sometimes be perceived as being unhygienic, bad mannered and primitive. However within Indian culture there is an old saying that,” Eating food with your hands feeds not only the body but also the mind and the spirit”.

In the Big Brother series some years back, an English participant complained about an Indian participants use of her hands during food preparations and her eating habits, “They eat with their hands in India, don’t they? Or is that China? You don’t know where those hands have been.” Within many Indian households nowadays, the practice of eating food with the hands has been replaced with the use of cutlery.

Have you ever thought of why previous generations in India ate with the hands? There is a reason for their this. The practice of eating with the hands originated within Ayurvedic teachings. The Vedic people knew the power held in the hand.

The ancient native tradition of eating food with the hands is derived from the mudra practice, which is prevalent in many aspects within Hinduism. Mudras are used during mediation and are very prominent within the many classical forms of dance, such as Bharatnatyam.

The hands are considered the most precious organ of action. This is linked to the Vedic prayer of

“Karagre vasate Laksmih karamule Sarasvati Karamadhye tu Govindah prabhate karadarsanam”

(On the tip of your fingers is Goddess Lakshmi, on the base of your fingers is Goddess Saraswati; in the middle of your fingers is Lord Govinda), which we recite whilst looking at our palms. Thus, this shloka suggests that all the divinity lies in human effort.

Our hands and feet are said to be the conduits of the five elements. The Ayurvedic texts teach that each finger is an extension of one of the five elements. The thumb is agni (fire) (you might have seen children sucking their thumb, this is nature’s way of aiding the digestion in children at an age when they are unable to do an physical activity to aid the digestion), the forefinger is vayu (air), the middle finger is akash (ether - the tiny intercellular spaces in the human body), the ring finger is prithvi (earth) and the little finger is jal (water).

Each finger aids in the transformation of food, before it passes on to internal digestion. Gathering the fingertips as they touch the food stimulates the five elements and invites Agni to bring forth the digestive juices. As well as improving digestion the person becomes more conscious of the tastes, textures and smells of the foods they are eating, which all adds to the pleasure of eating.

You may have noticed that elders in the family hardly ever use utensils to measure all the different type of masala, and would instead prefer to use their hands to measure the quantity instead. As each handful is tailored to provide a suitable amount for the own body. Overall there are 6 main documented forms that the hands take when obtaining a measurement a certain type of food ranging from solid food to seeds, and flour.

This is a prime example of how many things within Hindu culture may seem weird and unusual at first glance, but once a closer look is taken it is surprising, but a vast amount of knowledge is revealed.

JAMBUDWIPA AND THE SANKALPA

All of us would have probably heard the words, ".....Jambudveepe Bharatha Varshe Bharata Khande....." during the sankalpa mantram which forms an integral part of all Vedic rituals. However, most people in foreign countries regularly come to our page with the doubt as to how they must modify this sankalpa mantra to suit the etymology of those countries. This post hopes to throw some light on this aspect.

What exactly is this "Jambudwipa"?

Jambudveepa consisted of modern Asia, Europe, Africa and North America and not merely the Indian subcontinent.

This Jambudvipa was divided into nine varshas (geographical regions) of which one was Bharatha Varsha. The other eight varshas were:

3.Hari Varsha
4.Ilavrita Varsha
5.Kuru Varsha
6.Hiranyaka Varsha
7.Ramyaka Varsha
8.Kimpurusha Varsha
9.Bhadrasva Varsha.

India which was then called Bharathavarsha extended in the west including the regions of modern Egypt, Afghanistan, Baluchistan, Iran, Sumeria upto Caspian Sea (which was called Kashyapa Samudra in those days). Within this Bharata Varsha was located the Bharata Khanda which was the heart of the Vedic civilization & the place where we Indians currently reside. This is one of the innumerous proofs that the Indo-Aryan race theory is a conspiracy theory moulded by western countries to show us in poor light. All of the regions so mentioned in the race theory are a part of Bharata Varsha & there was never a so called "invasion".

What is amazing is the fact that our ancestors had an excellent overview of the geography of the world back then.

It can be observed that in those times, most of South American continent, southern half of African Continent and entire Australia were submerged under water. On the other hand most of modern day Atlantic ocean and Pacific ocean, and the entire Arctic ocean were above sea level.

This also proves the logical fallacy of the Western missionaries which claim that the Vedic civilization is just 5000 years old, Kurukshetra war took place just a few thousand years back,etc. The vedic civilization existed at times when Australia was submerged below the ocean! Imagine how long back that must have been!

What is rather disappointing is the fact that our government to this day teaches all sorts of disproved, anti-Indian & illogical theories in our textbooks solely for "minority appeasement" & to support the slow conversion on Hindus to Christianity, a mission well sponsored by the missionaries of the West.

Its disgusting that our government teaches our younger generations to think how worthless our ancestors were rather than teaching them about these great discoveries by such patriots.
I am reminded of the time when the Congress & other pseudosecular parties cried about "Saffronisation of India!" when LK Advani made a proposal to introduce lessons about the great sages of our country. Its time we wake up & understand who is ruling us & what their true agenda is. Are our sages not Indians? Can you name one country which shows its own personalities in poor light to appease its minorities(although minorities are not at all benefitted by it!)?

Its not that we are siding with any political party, but we shall certainly not accept those parties which intend to slowly destroy Sanatana Dharma through covert means!

Why to visit Temple?

There are thousands of temples all over India in different size, shape and locations but not all of them are considered to be built the Vedic way. Generally, a temple should be located at a place where earth's magnetic wave path passes through densely. It can be in the outskirts of a town/village or city, or in middle of the dwelling place, or on a hilltop. The essence of visiting a temple is discussed here.

Now, these temples are located strategically at a place where the positive energy is abundantly available from the magnetic and electric wave distributions of north/south pole thrust. The main idol is placed in the core center of the temple, known as "*Garbhagriha*" or *Moolasthanam*. In fact, the temple structure is built after the idol has been placed. This *Moolasthanam* is where earth’s magnetic waves are found to be maximum. We know that there are some copper plates, inscribed with Vedic scripts, buried beneath the Main Idol. What are they really? No, they are not God’s / priests’ flash cards when they forget the *shlokas*. The copper plate absorbs earth’s magnetic waves and radiates it to the surroundings. Thus a person regularly visiting a temple and walking clockwise around the Main Idol receives the beamed magnetic waves and his body absorbs it. This is a very slow process and a regular visit will let him absorb more of this positive energy. Scientifically, it is the positive energy that we all require to have a healthy life.

Further, the Sanctum is closed on three sides. This increases the effect of all energies. The lamp that is lit radiates heat energy and also provides light inside the sanctum to the priests or *poojaris* performing the pooja. The ringing of the bells and the chanting of prayers takes a worshipper into trance, thus not letting his mind waver. When done in groups, this helps people forget personal problems for a while and relieve their stress. The fragrance from the flowers, the burning of camphor give out the chemical energy further aiding in a different good aura. The effect of all these energies is supplemented by the positive energy from the idol, the copper plates and utensils in the *Moolasthan*am / *Garbagraham*. *Theertham*, the “holy” water used during the pooja to wash the idol is not
plain water cleaning the dust off an idol. It is a concoction of Cardamom,*Karpura* (Benzoin), zaffron / saffron, *Tulsi* (Holy Basil), Clove, etc...Washing the idol is to charge the water with the magnetic radiations thus increasing its medicinal values. Three spoons of this holy water is distributed to devotees. Again, this water is mainly a source of magneto-therapy. Besides, the clove essence protects one from tooth decay, the saffron & *Tulsi* leafs protects one from common cold and cough, cardamom and *Pachha Karpuram* (benzoin), act as mouth fresheners. It is proved that *Theertham* is a very good blood purifier, as it is highly energized. Hence it is given as *prasadam* to the devotees. This way, one can claim to remain healthy by regularly visiting the Temples. This is why our elders used to suggest us to offer prayers at the temple so that you will be cured of many ailments. They were not always superstitious. Yes, in a few cases they did go overboard when due to ignorance they hoped many serious diseases could be cured at temples by deities. When people go to a temple for the *Deepaaraadhana*, and when the doors open up, the positive energy gushes out onto the persons who are there. The water that is sprinkled onto the assemblages passes on the energy to all. This also explains why men are not allowed to wear shirts at a few temples and women are requested to wear more ornaments during temple visits. It is through these jewels (metal) that positive energy is absorbed by the women. Also, it is a practice to leave newly purchased jewels at an idol’s feet and then wear them with the idol’s blessings. This act is now justified after reading this article. This act of “seeking divine blessings” before using any new article, like books or pens or automobiles may have stemmed from this through mere observation.

Energy lost in a day’s work is regained through a temple visit and one is refreshed slightly. The positive energy that is spread out in the entire temple and especially around where the main idol is placed, are simply absorbed by one's body and mind. Did you know, every Vaishnava(Vishnu devotees), “must” visit a Vishnu temple twice every day in their location. Our practices are NOT some hard and fast rules framed by 1 man and his followers or God’s words in somebody’s dreams. All the rituals, all the practices are, in reality, well researched, studied and scientifically backed thesis which form the ways of nature to lead a good healthy life.

The scientific and research part of the practices are well camouflaged as “elder’s instructions” or “granny’s teaching’s” which should be obeyed as a mark of respect so as to once again, avoid stress to the mediocre brains.

When Lord Sri Venkatesha (MahaVishnu/Balaji) was inside the snake-antHill on tirumala, one sacred cow is to come and give milk to the Lord daily (Brahma deva took the form as sacred cow), When a cow-herd man at once saw the sacred-cow pouring milk in the snake-antHill, he became angry and without understanding the truth, the Cow-herd man took the axe and has hit the cow on the cow’s head with the axe. The Supreme Lord Sri Venkatesha(Vishnu) who was present inside the snake-antHill received the hurt of the axe on his head from the cow-herd man instead of Cow getting hurt. When Lord received the hurt of the Axe on his head, portion of his hair on his head disappeared due to hurt by axe. When mother Neela Devi saw Lord being hurt on his head, she immediately removed the hair from her head and placed on the Lord’s head in the portion where lord was hurt. Immediately Lord became well and Lord’s hair reappeared as beautiful as before he was hurt. Lord Venkatesha(Vishnu) knowing that hair is one of the beautiful features of women, Lord Sri venkatesha promised that his devotees will shave Hair of their head (tonsure) and dedicate their hair to her. Neela Devi accepts the hair sacrificed by Devotees of Lord Venkatesha(Vishnu) and Lord blesses his devotees who sacrifice their hair for the sake of the Lord. This is the reason why Devotees tonsure or shave their head in Tirumala(tirupathi).

There are also Spiritual reasons: Tonsure or Saving hair as offering for Lord represents a real sacrifice of material beauty and giving up false-ego in the way of shaving their hair as sacrifice to please Supreme Lord.

ఈ రోజు భీష్మ ఏకాదశి. మాఘ శుక్ల ఏకాదశినే భీష్మ ఏకాదశి అంటాము. ఈ రోజునే విష్ణు సహస్ర నామం ఉద్భవించింది. విచిత్ర మైన ఘట్టం. ఒళ్ళంతా బాణాలు దిగి అంప శయ్య మీద ఉన్న ఆజన్మ బ్రహ్మ చారి. అష్ట వసువులలో ఒకడు. అతి పుణ్యాత్ముడు అయిన భీష్మ పితామహుడు. ప్రశ్నలు అడుగటానికి వచ్చింది ధర్మరాజు.ఎవరితో? అదే బాణాలు సంధించిన అర్జునుడు ఇతరులతో కలసి . తోడుకొని వచ్చింది "కృష్ణస్తు భగవాన్ స్వయం" అనబడే సాక్షాత్తూ భగవంతుని పూర్ణ అవతారం శ్రీ కృష్ణుడు.

భీష్ముడు ఇచ్చా మరణ వరం కలవాడు. అంటే అనుకున్నపుడే మరణించ గలడు. ఉత్తరాయణ పుణ్య కాలం కోసం ఎదురు చూస్తూ 50 రోజులు వంటిలో దిగిన బాణాలతో అంప శయ్య మీద వేచి వున్నాడు. చివరికి ఈ రోజు పవిత్ర మైన విష్ణు సహస్ర నామములను ఉపదేశించాడు ధర్మరాజుకు. భగవంతుడైన శ్రీ కృష్ణుడు చిరు నవ్వు తో విని ఆమోదించాడు. ఇట్టి మహత్తర ఘట్టం ఎక్కడా లేదు. భగవంతుని దివ్య నామములను స్వయానా భగవంతుడే విని దీవించిన అపూర్వ ఘట్టం.

శ్రుత్వా ధర్మా నషేశేన పావనాని చ సర్వశః యుధిష్టిర స్సాన్తనవం పునరేవాభ్య భాషత --భీష్ముడు చెప్పిన నానా ధర్మాలను విన్న ధర్మరాజు చివరగా. కొన్ని ప్రశ్నలు అడుగుతాడు.
కిమేకం దైవతం లోకే? కిం వాప్యేకం పారాయణం? స్తువంత కం కమర్చంత ప్రాప్నుయుర్మానవా శుభం? కో ధర్మ సర్వ ధర్మానాం భవత పరమో మతః. కిం జపన్ ముచ్యతే జంతు జన్మ సంసార బంధనాత్.?
లోకంలో ఎవరు దైవము? ఎవరిని పూజించి, స్తుతించి అర్చించాలి. దేనివల్ల మానవులకు శుభం కలుగుతుంది. అన్ని ధర్మములలోకి ఉత్తమ ధర్మమేది. దేనిని జపించుట వలన మనిషి సంసార బంధముల నుండి విముక్తి పొందుతాడు? అని.
దానికి భీష్మ పితామహుడు , జగత్ ప్రభుం దేవదేవం అనంతం పురుషోత్తమం అని చెబుతూ,
అనాది నిధనం విష్ణుం సర్వ లోక మహేశ్వరం
లోకాధ్యక్షం స్తువన్నిత్యం సర్వ దుఖాతిగో భవేత్.
ఆది అంతము లేని, సర్వ వ్యాపి అయిన, దేవ దేవుడైన , భగవంతుడైన విష్ణు స్తుతి వల్ల సర్వ దుఃఖములు తోలగుతవి- అని ఇంకా చెబుతూ

ఎషమే సర్వ ధర్మానాం ధర్మోధిక తమో మతః- ఇదియే అన్ని ధర్మములలోకి ఉత్తమ ధర్మమని నా మాట అంటాడు.
నన్ను అనుగ్రహించిన సద్గురువులలో ఒకరైన, మహా తపస్వి, పరమ పూజ్య నందానంద స్వామి ఒక రోజు దీనిని నాకు వివరిస్తూ, సత్యా, పరమం యో మహత్తేజః పరమం యో మహత్తపః- ఏది పరమమైన తెజమో, ఏది పరమ మైన తపమో అట్టి దివ్యము తేజోమయము అయిన మంగళ స్వరూపాన్ని ధ్యానించు అన్నారు.

ఆంధ్రరాష్ట్రంలోని ఒక్కో ప్రాంతంలోని విశిష్ట ఆలయాలకు భీష్మ ఏకాదశి సందర్భంగా ప్రత్యేక పూజలు జరుగుతుంటాయి. సత్యనారాయణ స్వామి వెలసిన అన్నవరంలో, విజయనగరంలో ఈ పర్వదినం పాటించే విధానాన్ని ఇప్పుడు చూద్దాం. పాండవుల అభిమాని అయిన భీష్ముడు అంపశయ్యపై ఉండి ఉత్తరాయణ పుణ్యకాలం కోసం ఎదురుచూసే రోజుల్లో ధర్మరాజుకు ‘విష్ణు సహస్త్రనామాలు’ బోధించాడు. ఈ నామాలు గోప్యమయినవే కాదు గొప్పవి కూడా.

ఈ నామాలకే ఆదిశంకరాచార్యులు భాష్యం చెప్పారు. ఈ నామాల సుస్వరాలాపనే ‘సత్యనారాయణ వ్రతం’. ఈ వ్రతాన్ని భీష్మ ఏకాదశి రోజున ఆచరిస్తే కోరుకున్నవి నెరవేరుతాయని పెద్దల నమ్మకం. అందుకే అన్నవరంలోని సత్యనారాయణ స్వామిని భీష్మ ఏకాదశి రోజున భక్తులు పెద్ద సంఖ్యలో దర్శిస్తారు. వ్రతాన్ని ఆచరిస్తారు.

భీష్మ ఏకాదశిరోజున అన్నవరం భక్తులతో కళకళలాడుతుంది. విజయనగరం, విశాఖపట్నం, శ్రీకాకుళం ప్రాంతాలకే పరిమితమైన జానపద కళారూపం ‘తప్పెట గుళ్ళు’. ఈ కళారూపం ప్రదర్శనను గంగమ్మ దేవతకు నివేదించిన తర్వాత తప్పెట గుళ్ళు వాయించడాన్ని భక్తులంతా ‘పూజ’గా భావిస్తారు.

Bhaja - Seek, Govinda - The Lord Govinda, Moodhamathe - O Fool, O Ignoramus, Samprapte - (When) comes, Sannihite - appointed, Kaale - Time, Nahi - Surely never, Rakshati - Saves, Dukrinkarane - Grammar rule.

Substance:

Seek or Worship Govinda, Seek Govinda, Seek Govinda, O Fool or ignoramus. When the death comes at the appointed time, grammar rules will not save or rescue you..

Commentary:

By repeating the words "Bhaja Govindam" thrice in the very first two lines of the first sloka itself, Jagatguru Sri Adi Sankaracharya is trying to bring home the point that human being has no other escape except immersing oneself in the thoughts of Lord, and praying with utmost sincerity, reciting the Divine Namas of the Lord rather than getting engrossed in anxieties to possess wealth or acquire social status or achievements. Here the rules of grammar mean all secular knowledge and earthly acquisitions or possessions. The one who runs after materialistic gains is Moodhamathi.

The purport of these words is that any amount of knowledge cannot save the soul when death knocks at the door of this limited body. At that time, one has to leave behind one's material benefits and social status. These acquisitions will not help one gain the knowledge of the Soul, which is permanent, when the impermanent body withers, it turns out to be a dead-wood.

It does not mean that one should shun away the pursuit of living for knowledge, but, at the same time, one should understand its limited capacity, and one should seriously try to acquire that knowledge which alone can save a person from the slavery of imperfections. We should remember the truth that it is a manifested world and it is impermanent. Other than God or Soul, everything else is temporary. Death will snatch away the existence of the body and the manifested world. What is the use of all the acquisitions and secural knowledge then? So, while living in this secular world, or materialistic world, one should endeavour to understand and master the secret of purposeful life. One should identify oneself with the Lord, who can only give solace to the parched materialistic lives. One should progress spiritually after each death, instead of getting deeper and deeper into mundane pleasures. It is rather sad that quite a few of us are of the opinion that spirituality is for those who retired from employment or aged people. The intellect, which has not been trained to remember God till one attains sixty years, will never resort to spirituality after that. Even if it does, for argument sake, what is guarantee that the cruel hands of death will not embrace one before that. So, one should understand the fallacy of this argument and train the mind from the childhood itself to start practicing recitation of the Lord's name with every breath that one inhales and exhales, otherwise it is just impossible to remember God's name at the time of death. It is, therefore, imperative that one should keep repeating the Divine Namas of Lord at every possible moment.

Bhaja does not mean monotonous and routine ritual with mechanical chanting of some selected Namas or Mantras. It is rather much deeper than that. The true Bhajan of Lord is to offer True Seva or Service to Lord with Love and devotion and in that sense, every human being is a Lord. Bhagavan is Bhava Graahi. He does not get enamoured or attracted by the pomp and show of the devotee. He looks deep into the heart of the devotee to see how much sincere one is while worshiping Him or serving the needy, treating them as (the) God Himself (i.e., Manava sevahi Madhava seva).

There are Nine types of Service to be offered at the feet of Lord. A devotee can adopt any one, according to one's choice and temperament.

They are :

(1) Sravanam (listening to the stories or glory of Lord),

(2) Keertanam (Singing the glory of the Lord),

(3) Smaranam (Constantly thinking about the nature and beauty, divine qualities and characteristics of the Lord,

(4) Paadasevaram (Adorning the sacred feet of Lord in a spirit of self-obliteration),

5) Archanam (Worshiping the Lord with rituals, mantras and with self-less love),

(6) Vandanam (Salute or to pay obeisance to the Lord),

(7) Dassyam (Serving the Lord),

(8) Sakhyam (Invoking an affectionate friendship with Lord, and

(9) Aatmanivedanam (To offer oneself with complete dedication or total surrender to the Lord as a humble gift at His altar). Every devotee has the liberty to choose a path that is convenient and appealing to one to realise the God.

In all the above modes of worship, the spirit of Bhaja is visible. With this bhava, the devotee has to worship the Govinda, who is the knower of each atom of this universe. He is the very essence of all animate and inanimate beings in this universe. So, Govinda is the Atman, Govinda is the Brahman, Govinda is the Highest Reality and the very Essence of this Universe. Each devotee should seek one's identity with that Spirit, Force, Reality, Truth and Supreme Braman or God, instead of wasting one's time in materialistic pursuits of secular knowledge for worldly possessions, name and fame...!!!

Hindu God - Lord Brahma

Brahma has four face though only three can be seen. He has matted hair, wears a pointed beard and the eyes are usually closed in meditation. He has four hands which may hold a variety of objects such as a rosary, a water-pot, a book (the Vedas), a sceptre, a spoon, a bow or a lotus. Sometimes two of his hands may be in a boon-giving and protective attitudes. His four faces represent the four Vedas and the four hands the four directions. The rosary which he is counting represents time. The whole universe evolves out of water, therefore Brahma carries water in the water-pot.

He may wear a tiger skin or the skin of a black antelope as a garment and the sacred cord over his left shoulder. If colored, he is pink or red. He is sometimes shown riding the goose, or sitting in the lotus position in a chariot being pulled by seven swans. The swan which is the symbol of knowledge, is his vehicle.

In the Rig-Veda the word Brahman (or Brahma) was used to indicate the mysterious power contained in sacred utterances. Later, this was associated with the skill of the priest who spoke the ‘words’ and he was described as a Brahmin. In the Upanishads, by a further development, this power was regarded as being universal and forming the elemental matter from which everything (including the gods themselves) originally emerged. Eventually this supreme creative spirit became fully personalized under the name of Brahma.

Since this idea is linked with the origin of the universe, it was inevitable that Brahma should become associated with Hindu cosmogony. Many legends grew, particularly in the later texts, surrounding the connection with the origin and control of the universe. In one of them the supreme soul and self-existent lord created the waters of the earth and deposited in them a seed which became the golden egg, out of which He was born as Brahma. According to other texts, he became a boar who raised the earth from the primeval waters and thus created the world. He is described as assuming the appearance of a fish or a tortoise at the beginning of the ages. In much later developments of Hindu mythology these aspects are attributed to Vishnu and Brahma assumes a secondary role. His worship slowly declined and has not been widespread since the 6th century.

Images of Brahma are still made. Many temples include one somewhere in their scheme of sculptural decoration, although it is only in extremely rare cases that he occupies the position of the main icon. In the whole of India there are very few temples of Brahma. There is one at Pushkar, near Ajmer (Rajasthan) and another in Orissa.

In Hindu cosmology the basic cycle which through the cosmos, passes through all eternity, is the Kalpa or the Day of Brahma, equivalent to 4320 million years. A night is of equal length, and 360 days and nights of this duration form one year of Brahma’s life. This is expected to last 100 years.

Hanuman with his wife Suvarchala

Sri Hanuman’s education and Marriage
The boons granted by the gods made Hanuman invincible. The monkey child became uncontrollable. He became very mischievous. His pranks irritated many. He did not spare the sages even. He would pounce on them and tear their dress. He would throw fruit and leaves, perched atop trees. They bore with him patiently being aware of his future. One day a sage was very much disturbed by Hanumantha. The sage went into a rage and cursed Hanumantha: “ May you forget your strength with which you have caused us so much of pain”. The curse changed the life of Hanuman altogether. He became very calm and inert. The change pained the sages. They altered the curse on him. They blessed him thus: “If any one reminds you of your strength, you would recognize your strength and abilities and succeed”.

This boon chastened Hanumantha. He became a well-behaved child and an epitome of virtuousness.

Hanuman was growing older. His mother told him: “Son! It is time to get educated. There is no better teacher than Surya, the Sun god, who dispels all darkness. Go to him and gain knowledge.”

Even though he was omnipotent, Hanuman obeyed his mother. He reached the Surya Mandala and humbly prayed the Sun god: “O! Surya Deva, I want to learn Vedas, Vedangas, and Upangas from you. Please teach me.” Surya replied: “O! Boy of Anjana, I am always on the move, as ordained by Almighty, how can I teach you? ”

Hanuman was angered. He blocked the path of Surya. Surya pacified Hanuman. He said: “I have no objection to teach you. But you have to find a way to learn”.

Hanuman stood facing the sun and started walking backwards. Surya was moving forward and was teaching Hanuman. Lord Siva is said to know all and Hanuman, who is Lord Siva’s incarnation, proved to be one who knows all as well. With in a week of his education, he astonished Surya. Surya praised Hanuman. Hanuman wanted to continue his education. Instead of walking backward, he put one foot on the rising hill and the other one on the setting hill to face the Sun god. Hanuman’s interest and devotion pleased the Sun god. Surya taught all that is to be taught to Hanuman.

Surya was married to Sanjana, a daughter of Viswakarma. Sanjana was devoted wife but was unable to bear the heat emanating from the Sun’s rays. She was suffering with anguish. Her mother noticed the daughter’s plight and sought to know as to what the problem was. Sanjana explained her problem to her mother. Her mother in turn told Viswakarma of Sanjana’s problem. Viswakarma told Surya that he would polish off some of the luminescence of Surya. Surya agreed. Viswakarma was able to polish off some luminescence of his son-in-law. The luminescence thus separated took the form of young woman. Her beauty and grace astonished even gods. Indra wanted to know as to who would marry that shinning brilliant young women. Brahma thought for a while and replied: “Hanuman who is essence of Lord Siva’s fiery power will marry the young woman. Since Hanuman tried to grab the ever glowing Sun god, he alone can bear this glowing young woman”.

Surya remembered Brahma’s utterance. By than Hanuman’s education was complete. He was ready to graduate. He bowed to Lord Surya and said: “O! My divine teacher! Thanks to you I am educated now. I would like to take your leave now. I would like to offer you an appropriate fee as Guru Dakshina. Kindly order me”.

Surya immediately replied: “O Hanuman, you are the incarnation of Lord Siva who bore the poisonous HAALAAHALA to save the universe when the ocean was churned. You are also son of Agni, the fire god. Viswakarma separated a part of my luminescence and the world is unable to bear it. You are the only one who can bear it. So I want to offer you my daughter Suvarchala formed from my ‘VARCHAS’ (luminescence), in marriage. Marry my daughter. Since husband is the one who is to bear, you also bear my ‘Suvarchas’ by marrying Suvarchala. Your marrying her shall be my Guru Dakshina”.

Hanuman listened to his teacher and replied politely: “O Lord! I have decided to follow Brahmacharya through out my life. How can I marry?” Surya replied: “O Hanuman, this Suvarchala is a divine one, Ayonija. She would be a devoted wife. I am giving you the boon that you would still be a Brahmachari even after marriage. You would continue to be a Prajapatya Brahmachari. Your marriage is only for the welfare of the Universe and it would not affect your chosen course of celibacy. You were a born Brahmachari with a Yajnopavita (Sacred thread). Brahmacharya will be your eternal pursuit. Since you are going to be a Brahma in future, Suvarchala will then occupy the place of Vani”.

Hanuman obeyed his preceptor’s advice. Surya presented Suvarchala to Hanuman. It is stated in PARASARA SAMHITA, that Surya offered his daughter Suvarchala in marriage on JYESTHA SUDDHA DASAMI. It was a Wednesday under the star UTTARA. Those who respect tradition, even to this day, observe “HANUMAT KALYANAM” (Hanuman’s Marriage) on JYESTHA SUDDHA DASAMI day.

The original name of Hinduism is Sanatan Dharm. ‘Sanatan’ means eternal and ‘Dharm’ means those actions, thoughts and practices that promote physical and mental happiness in the world and ensure God realization.

Sanatan Dharm eternally exists in God, is revealed by God, describes the names, forms, virtues and the abodes of God, and reveals the true path of God realization for the souls of the world.

There are three eternal existences: soul, maya, and God. Souls are unlimited in number, infinitesimal in size, Divine in quality but eternally under the bondage of maya. Soul does not belong to maya or the mayic world. It has a natural and eternal relationship with God.
Maya is a lifeless power of God having three qualities: sattvic (pious), rajas (selfish) and tamas (impious) that represent its existence when it is evolved into the form of the universe. The universe has two dimensions -- material and celestial. The Divine dimension of God lies beyond the field of maya.
Hinduism is monotheistic. There is one single God Who represents the various aspects of His unlimited Blissful charm through many forms such as Krishn, Vishnu, Shiv and Shakti and the impersonal aspect. Out of these Krishn is the absolute supreme form of God which includes all others. God is an eternal, omnipresent, all-Blissful, all-Gracious, all-kind and all-loving Divine personality.
Hinduism explains that the soul is eternally yearning for perfect, unlimited and everlasting happiness. But the soul is mistakenly searching for this happiness in the mayic world where one finds only transitory pleasures followed by disappointments.
The illusion of finding perfect happiness in the mayic world is the cause of soul’s reincarnation. The soul, since uncountable lifetimes, has been taking birth into the 8.4 million species of life where it undergoes the consequences of actions (karmas). Perfect happiness is neither a feature of the mind nor a nature or quality of the mayic world. It can only be attained by God realization.
The human form of life is the only chance for a soul to attain God realization, if one understands the disappointing nature of the illusive attractions and attachments of the world and sincerely proceeds on the path of God realization by completely trusting in the causeless kindness of God.
The aim of human life is to attain God realization. The means of God realization is bhakti and God’s Grace.
Humble, loving and wholehearted submission to a personal form of God is called bhakti. Bhakti evokes the Grace of God and ensures God realization. Upon God realization the soul is released from the bondage of maya and achieves unlimited Divine Bliss forever.
Sattvic practices such as austerity, intellectual study of Vedant, practice of renunciation and meditation, on their own, can only evolve the sattvic quality of person’s mind to a certain extent. They can never be the means of God realization. When one begins to do bhakti, these practices, with the Divine uniting factor of bhakti, are then classified as karm yog or gyan yog. Only when these practices are performed with bhakti, can they become the means of God realization, because only bhakti unfolds God’s Grace.
A personality who has the Divine knowledge of all the scriptures and who is God realized is needed to guide, protect and Grace the souls on their path to God realization. Such a Divine personality is called Guru. It is the Guru who imparts the Divine vision or Divine love of God to a dedicated soul when they reach a stage of complete surrender through bhakti. Divine personalities are always present on the earth planet to guide the souls.
In addition to sending Divine personalities from His abode to the earth planet, God Himself descends on the earth planet from time to time to establish and protect Sanatan Dharm, to reveal His absolute Blissfulness through His Divine actions (leelas) and to show the path of bhakti to the souls. The descension of God into the material (mayic) realm is called avatar in Sanskrit.
The Divine scriptures of Hinduism include the Vedas, the Upvedas, the Vedangas, the Smritis, the Darshan Shastras, the Upnishads, the Puranas, the Itihas (Ramayan and Mahabharat), the Gita, the Bhagwatam and the writings of Jagadgurus, acharyas, and Saints.
The vast collection of Bhartiya scriptures are a systematic line of teachings. They provide the guidelines for all kinds of people, having varying levels of purity of mind and receptivity for God, and lead them towards God realization.

The Bhartiya (Hindu) scriptures also reveal the scientific axioms that are valuable in the research and development of modern science. They reveal the sequence of the procedure of creation of the universe, the exact model and working of the universe, as well as the science of defense, medicine and aviation, whatever is required by the society for daily living.

Status Of Women in Hindu Society

The position of women in society is always an index of the greatness of its religion and culture. A woman has always been given a much higher status and position in Hinduism than in any other religion.

Women so inclined could avail themselves of the highest learning and there were many female seers and philosophers. In the ancient times Gargi, wife of Mandanamishra, was appointed as judge because of her superior erudition and spiritual attainments. Warrior queens like Kaikeye helped their husbands on the battlefields.

Women were not married till they were in their late teens, sometimes even later. They could choose their own husbands and intermarriages were common. Polygamy existed in some societies but mostly amongst princes who contracted several marriages with daughters of neighbouring rulers for political reasons.

A woman was supposed to be the manifestation of Goddess/Shakti and the male (Shaktiman) was supposed to be incomplete without the female (Shakti) with him, whether he was a god or a human being. Each male deity of the Divine Trinity has his female counterpart; Saraswati (learning), Lakshmi (wealth) and Parvati (power). The rituals, especially auspicious ones, are incomplete when performed by a man without his wife co-participating. Dishonour to women was tantamount to dishonour of the Almighty. Wife or mother commanded more honour and reverence than husband or father.

With the onslaught of the foreign invasions and the subsequent rigidity of the caste system, Hindu women lost their independence and became objects requiring male protection. In the process they lost the opportunities they earlier had of acquiring knowledge and learning.

Starting from the early nineteenth century there arose a new upsurge of intellectual searching and re-evaluation of our ancient past with several reformers spreading the message of the need for purifying Hinduism of its excessive rites, rituals and orthodoxy and the heaping of inequalities on women. Some of the reformers of the time were Raja Ram mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi.

Women in modern Indian society have full freedom and equality including the right of inheritance.

సుభాష్ చంద్రబోస్ (జననం జనవరి 23, 1897). (మరణం: ఆగష్టు 18, 1945న చనిపోయినట్లుగా భావిస్తున్నారు) నేతాజీ గా ప్రసిద్ధి గాంచిన గొప్ప స్వాతంత్ర్య సమరయోధుడు. ఒకవైపు గాంధీజీ మొదలైన నాయకులందరూ అహింసావాదం తోనే స్వరాజ్యం సిద్ధిస్తుందని నమ్మి పోరాటం సాగిస్తుంటే బోస్ మాత్రం సాయుధ పోరాటం ద్వారా ఆంగ్లేయులను దేశం నుంచి తరిమి కొట్టవచ్చునని నమ్మి, అది ఆచరణలో పెట్టిన మహనీయుడు. ఇతని మరణం పై పలువురు భిన్నాభిప్రాయాలు వ్యక్తం చేస్తున్నారు.బోసు రెండు సార్లు భారత జాతీయ కాంగ్రెస్ కు అధ్యక్షుడిగా ఎన్నికైనా గాంధీతో సిద్ధాంత పరమైన అభిప్రాయ భేదాల వలన ఆ పదవికి రాజీనామా చేశాడు. గాంధీ యొక్క అహింసావాదం మాత్రమే స్వాతంత్ర్య సాధనకు సరిపోదని, పోరుబాట కూడా ముఖ్యమని బోసు బావన. ఈ అభిప్రాయాలతోనే ఆల్ ఇండియా ఫార్వార్డ్ బ్లాక్ అనే రాజకీయ పార్టీని కూడా స్థాపించాడు. దాదాపు 11 సార్లు ఆంగ్లేయులచే కారాగారంలో నిర్బంధించ బడ్డాడు. 1939లో రెండవ ప్రపంచ యుద్ధం మొదలైంది. ఆంగ్లేయులను దెబ్బ తీయటానికి దీన్ని ఒక సువర్ణవకాశంగా బోసు భావించాడు. యుద్ధం ప్రారంభం కాగానే అతను ఆంగ్లేయుల పై పొరాడేందుకు కూటమి ఏర్పాటు చేసే ఉద్దేశంతో రష్యా, జర్మనీ మరియు జపాను దేశాలలో పర్యటించాడు. జపాను సహాయంతో భారత యుద్ధ ఖైదీలు, రబ్బరు తోట కూలీలు మరియు ఔత్సాహికులతో భారత జాతీయ సైన్యం ను ఏర్పాటు చేశాడు. జపాను ప్రభుత్వం అందించిన సైనిక, ఆర్ధిక, దౌత్య సహకారాలతో ఆజాద్ హింద్ ప్రభుత్వం ను సింగపూర్ లో ఏర్పరచాడు.

బోసు రాజకీయ అభిప్రాయాలు, జర్మనీ మరియు జపానుతో అతని మిత్రత్వం పై చరిత్రకారుల్లో భిన్నాభిప్రాయాలున్నాయి. కొందరు వీటిని విమర్శిస్తే, మరి కొందరు వాస్తవిక దృష్టితో చేసిన ప్రయత్నాలుగా బోసును అభిమానిస్తారు. అతని జీవితం లాగే మరణం కూడా వివాదాస్పదమైంది. 18 ఆగస్టు, 1945 లో తైవాన్ లో జరిగిన విమాన ప్రమాదం లో బోసు మరిణించాడని ప్రకటించినప్పటికి, అతను ప్రమాదం నుంచి బయట పడి అజ్ఞాతం లోకి వెళ్ళాడని పలువురు నమ్ముతారు.

Who is a hero ?

History produces two types of heroes: crisis-time heroes and prosperous-time heroes.

Crisis-time heroes emerge at a time of social, economical, moral and spiritual crisis. They flash like lightening against darkness and are easily remembered. Prosperous-time heroes go unnoticed like Sun in the day time. But they are the ones who work hard to prevent the crises from occurring in the first place, by ensuring smooth, harmonious and orderly function of the society.

It is easy to name a number of crisis-time heroes like Gandhi, Jesus, Nelson Mandela, Mohammad, Gorbachev, Nehru, Mao, Buddha, Hitler, Lenin, George Washington, etc. But it is hard to think of the names of prosperous-time heroes, because their times are remembered more than their names. There had been many of them, who are responsible for the many long, quiet, harmonious, peaceful and prosperous periods of history.

Rama is one such hero and Rama Rajyam is one such period, when people enjoyed the best of the times of peace, harmony and prosperity, without any crisis.

Crisis-time heroes, most of the times, leave a legacy of passions against a demonized past, and for a glorified and imagined future. They leave people with hatred for their own past and dissatisfaction of not able to realize an imagined future.

Prosperous-time heroes illustrate the art and science of keeping a society harmonious and prosperous. They illustrate the tough stands one has to take and personal sacrifices one has to make in order to keep the society strong, stable and prosperous. Crisis-time heroes should be remembered, but prosperous-time heroes are the ones that should be emulated. Crisis-time heroes inspire us to take action in the periods of desperation. But prosperous-time heroes are the one that can tell us how to lead life.

For our good fortune, Indian civilization understood this subtle difference. The stories of Indian civilizatoin are about the prosperous-time heroes and not about the crisis-time heroes. It doesn't mean they ignored the crisis-time heroes. They embedded the stories of the crisis-time heroes inside the stories of prosperous-time heroes. Rama is the prosperous-time hero. Parasurama is the crisis-time hero. Parasurama's story is embedded into Rama's story, not the other way around.

Rama is an illustrious prosperous-time hero. He should not be mistaken to be a simple private individual. He inherited one of the grandest kingdoms of the day, from an illustrious line of rulers of an unparalleled dynasty. He gained the confidence of the people much before he got coroneted as crown prince. He is a public person with great social responsibilities on his shoulder. He is fully prepared and mentally invested in discharging that responsibility. The magnanimity and grandeur of Rama's life can only be understood, when one considers him as an individual struggling to keep up to his social responsibilities, which challenged him to make immense personal sacrifices.

Rama says (in Uttara Kanda slokas 45. 11-15) "Even my love to you (the brothers) and to Sita are secondary, when it comes to meeting the expectations of people in discharging my responsibilities". His decision to leave the kingdom, to kill the Rakshasas to protect the Rishis in the forests, his action to punish Vali for his transgression against his brother's wife and his killing of Ravana for abducting a women, are all part of one single principle for him: to protect Dharma. In every single action that he takes, he clearly articulates, "I have no choice, but to take this action, in accordance with the expectations of people and in accordance with the guidance of the illustrious Ikshvaku kings of the past"! (example: Kishkindha Kanda Sloka 18.36)

Don't we wish we have rulers of that kind all the time and in all the places?

Valmiki came to know about Rama, after he inquired Narada, whether one such illustrious prosperous-time hero ever existed. Valmiki uses SIXTEEN illustrious characteristics, posed as questions to Narada, to describe such a hero, in the very beginning of Ramayana.

కో న్వస్మిన్సామ్ప్రతం లోకే గుణవాన్కశ్చ వీర్యవాన్ ।
ధర్మజ్ఞశ్చ కృతజ్ఞశ్చ సత్యవాక్యో దృఢవ్రతః

kō nvasminsāmprataṃ lōkē guṇavānkaṡca vīryavān ।
dharmajñaṡca kṛtajñaṡca satyavākyō dṛḍhavrataḥ

Who, in this world, is a person
1) of adorable and admirable character,
2) of great valor,
3) of acute discernment about right and wrong,
4) that appreciates, remembers and grateful
for the help received from anyone,
5) that stands by his word all the times,
6) and pursues the objectives to completion, unswervingly ?

చారిత్రేణ చ కో యుక్తః సర్వభూతేషు కో హితః ।
విద్వాన్కః కః సమర్థశ్చ కశ్చైకప్రియదర్శనః ॥

cāritrēṇa ca kō yuktaḥ sarvabhūtēṣu kō hitaḥ ।
vidvānkaḥ kaḥ samarthaṡca kaṡcaikapriyadarṡanaḥ ॥

7) Who is a man of proven track record,
8) who always wishes and does good to all beings,
9) who is well read about all aspects of life,
10) who is capable of getting the most challenging things done,
11) who is also approachable, personable and pleasing
to all alike, at all times?

ఆత్మవాన్కో జితక్రోధో మతిమాన్కోఽనసూయకః ।
కస్య బిభ్యతి దేవాశ్చ జాతరోషస్య సంయుగే ॥

ātmavānkō jitakrōdhō matimānkō'nasūyakaḥ ।
kasya bibhyati dēvāṡca jātarōṣasya saṃyugē ॥

Who is a person
12) of exemplary courage,
13) in complete control of his temperament,
14) of great intellect,
15) that is unbiased and doesn't indulge in slander,
16) and whose displeasure and wrath
would frighten even the gods ?

Valmiki, in these three slokas, is giving the characteristics of an illustrious prosperous time hero. To appreciate this list, wee need to contrast them with the characteristics of the most of the crisis-time heroes: exciting, bombastic, sensational, mecurial, blinding, etc.

What is more important to Rama: Dharma or Rama? Clearly Dharma. If we want to follow Rama, we should love Dharma even more than we love Rama. We should be able to say: "I love Rama, because I love Dharma'. Only then, the purpose of Ramayana is served.

Ramayana is a case study of how to keep Dharma above personal issues, given to us by none other than Valmiki, who wrote the first poem that humankind knows about!

The Sri Bhagyalakshmi Temple is an ancient temple, located adjacent to the Charminar. The city of Bhagyanagar, viz today’s Hyderabad was named after Devi ( Goddess) Bhagyalakshmi. This fact has also been established by famous social historians

if the city has prospered from what it was, the belief is that the charminar is responsible for it. not just the charminar but the goddess of wealth, lakshmi, who 'stays' in it. some people also claim that they hear the sounds of lakshmi's anklets from the monument. an attender of the archaeological survey of india (asi) claims to have heard it more than a dozen times. legend has it that the goddess was angry with king tana shah in the 17th century for some reason and decided to leave the city. the guard, posted at the monument by the king only to see that lakshmi did not leave, refused to let her go. when lakshmi insisted she should go, the guard made a plea that he would inform the king and let her know. "promise me, until i return, you will not leave," the guard was believed to have asked the goddess. being considerate to him, the goddess obliged and promised she would not leave until he came back after informing the king of her resolve. the guard went to the king at the golconda fort and informed him about the decision of the goddess. he explained that despite pleading with her, she was determined to go. as he spoke to the king, the guard came up with an idea. "kill me," he urged the king. since lakshmi had promised that she would not leave until he came back, the guard explained to the king that if he was killed, he would not be able to return and the goddess would remain in the charminar. the guard was killed and the belief among people even today is that lakshmi is still waiting for the guard's return. since the belief is that lakshmi is still at charminar, women offer puja even now to a stone at the base of the charminar on the northern side. it is not an elaborate puja but they apply vermilion to the stone every morning. because of the belief that lakshmi lives in the charminar, the marwadis in the old city make `parikrama' of the monument during marriage performances. the procession of the bridegroom first goes to the charminar and make's at least one round of the monument starting from the bhagyalakshmi temple.

In the past, attempts have been made to destory this temple under the leadership of the is a continuation of the Razakars and they have nurtured the ambition to eliminate Hindu traces from the old city of Hyderabad.

There is a planned propaganda by Razakars Party of Hyderabad , stating that the temple is a new construction and was constructed in 1979. This is just to confuse the people.

కూచిపూడి నృత్యము, భారతీయ నృత్యరీతులలో ప్రధానమైనది.ఇది ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ లోని కృష్ణా జిల్లాకు చెందిన కూచిపూడి గ్రామములో ఆవిర్భవించినది.

కూచిపూడి గ్రామానికి గొప్ప చరిత్ర ఉంది. ఇది ప్రాచీన ఆంధ్ర చరిత్రాత్మక నగరమైన (క్రీ పూ 2వ శతాబ్దం )శ్రీకాకుళంకు ఆరు మైళ్ళ దూరంలో ఉన్నది. శాతవాహనులు ఈ కళకు గొప్ప ఆరాధకులుగా ప్రసిద్ధి గాంచారు. అప్పట్లో అత్యంత పవిత్ర దేవాలయమైన ఆంధ్ర విష్ణు దేవాలయం ఆవరణలో లభ్యమైన శాసనాల ప్రకారం దాదాపుగా మూడు వందల మంది దేవదాసీలు రాజమర్యాదలు అందుకునేవారు. ఇక్కడ లభ్యమైన శిల్పాలు కూడా ఆ నృత్య కళాకారిణుల దైవపూజగా భావించే అపురూప భంగిమలను దాచిపెట్టినట్లు కనిపిస్తాయి. చాలాకాలం వరకు ,కూచిపూడి నృత్యం దేవాలయాల్లో ప్రదర్శింపబడేది. సాంప్రదాయం ప్రకారం, పూర్వం బ్రాహ్మణ కులానికి చెందిన మగవారే కూచిపూడి నృత్యాన్నిచేసేవారు. అందుకే వీరిని కూచిపూడి భాగవతులు అంటారు. 15 వ శతాబ్దంలో సిద్దేంద్ర యోగి, కూచిపూడి నాట్యంలో ఆడవారు నాట్యం చేయడానికి అనుగుణంగా, కొన్ని మార్పులు చేసి దానిని పరిపుష్టం గావించాడు. వేదాంతం లక్ష్మీనారాయణ శాస్త్రి, చింతా కృష్ణమూర్తి, తాడేపల్లి పేరయ్య వంటి కూచిపూడి నృత్య కళాకారులు దీనిని విస్తరించి, సంస్కరించారు. కూచిపూడి నృత్యప్రదర్శన గణేష స్తుతి, సరస్వతీ స్తుతి, లక్ష్మీస్తుతి, పరాశక్తి స్తోత్రాలతో మొదలవుతుంది. ఇది భరతుని 'నాట్య శాస్త్రాన్ని' ఉల్లంఘించదు. చురుగ్గా లయబద్ధంగా కదిలే పాదాలు, శిల్పసదృశమైన దేహభంగిమలు, హస్తాలు, కళ్ళతో చేసే కదలికలు, ముఖంలో చూపించే భావాలు, మూకాభినయంతో కూచిపూడి నృత్య కళాకారులు సాత్వికాభినయం, భావాభినయం చేయడంలో ఉద్ధండులు. కృష్ణుని భార్య, సత్యభామ ను అనుకరిస్తూ చేసే నాట్యం భామాకలాపం. ఒక ఇత్తడి పళ్ళెంపై పాదాల నుంచి, నాట్యం చేయడాన్నితరంగం అంటారు. ప్రక్కన ఒక గాయకుడు, కర్ణాటక సంగీతశైలిలో కీర్తనలను పాడతాడు. దీనినే నట్టువాంగం అంటారు. ఇందులో మృదంగం, వయొలిన్, వేణువు వంటి వాద్యపరికరాలను ఉపయోగిస్తారు.

Hinduism and Sanatana Dharma

Sanatana Dharma, which means the eternal or universal tradition, is the ancient name for what we today call the Hindu religion. It refers to a dharma, a teaching, law or truth that exists in perpetuity, that is all-encompassing, embracing the full spectrum of human spiritual experience, culminating in the direct realization of the Divine as one's own true Self.

Through the course of time and human limitations, Hinduism may have taken on various elements which do not reflect this eternal essence of universal truth. However, the power of Sanatana Dharma continues behind the Hindu tradition, particularly in its Yoga and Vedanta spiritual forms, providing it with a depth, breadth and vitality that perhaps no other spiritual tradition on Earth is able to sustain.

One can find in Hinduism all the main religious teachings of the world from nature worship, to theism, to the formless Absolute. One can find practices of devotion, yoga, mantra and meditation in a great plethora of expressions, including the world's most sophisticated spiritual philosophies of Self-realization. Hinduism is not anchored to any single prophet, book or historical revelation that can tie down the expanse of its vision. It does not subordinate the individual to an outer religious authority, but encourages everyone to discover the Divine within their own awareness.

Indeed, if one were to synthesize all the existing religions of the world, one would end up with a teaching much like Hindu Dharma. Hinduism has the devotional theism of western religions, the karma theory and meditation practices of Buddhism, and the nature worship of native traditions, all unified at a deep philosophical and experiential level into one harmonious fabric. Hinduism appears like the common root from which these various religious expressions have diversified or perhaps, departed.

:: Global Sanatana Dharma and Hinduism in India ::

Yet though Hinduism has been its main expression through history, Sanatana Dharma as a universal and eternal tradition cannot be reduced to the forms of Hinduism or to a tradition belonging only to India. Sanatana Dharma has counterparts in other lands and traditions. In fact, one can argue, wherever the higher truth is recognized, that is Sanatana Dharma, regardless of the names, forms or personalities involved.

If we look at the ancient world prior to the predominance of western monotheistic traditions, we find much that resembles Hinduism and Sanatana Dharma, whether among the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Greeks, Celts, Persians, Chinese or Mayas to name but a few. India is the land in which Sanatana Dharma has taken the deepest root and maintained its best continuity. Hinduism is the religion in which Sanatana Dharma has best survived. But Santana Dharma is relevant to all peoples and must be recognized throughout the world for the planet to achieve its real potential for the unfoldment of consciousness.

One then may ask, "If Hinduism is an expression of Sanatana Dharma, why does it appear to be limited to India like a local ethnic religion, rather than a universal approach?" The first thing to realize in this regard is that a universal approach will always seek to create local forms. For example, a universal approach to diet will encourage people to eat the local food that has the best nutritional content. It will not emphasize the same food items for people in all lands and climates.

Sanatana Dharma will always create a great diversity of local forms, and never aim at uniformity. Uniformity is not a sign if universality, but of artificiality. Dharma is not a set of fixed beliefs or practices but a way of adaptation to the living truth that is always changing in form though one in law and principle. Even in India we see a great deal of local diversity in how Hinduism is presented and expressed in the different parts of the country. This variety that exists within Hinduism is probably greater than the variety found within any other religion. Yet through all of this diversity there remains a clear unity of Hindu thought and culture.

Sanatana Dharma is central to the soul of India as a nation. India's place in human history is to function as the global guru or spiritual guide rooted in Sanatana Dharma as Sri Aurobindo once eloquently proclaimed. The traditional culture of India is infused with yoga, meditation and experiential spirituality of all types. This means that India cannot flourish as a country without a recognition of Sanatana Dharma and an honoring of its values on all levels of India's culture.

However, besides its connection to Sanatana Dharma, India has another side, much like many other countries and cultures. There are divisive forces that deny this dharmic cultural unity, whether in the name of political ideologies like Marxism, other religious traditions like Christianity and Islam, or sectarian trends within Hinduism itself. Even in Hindu society, we too frequently see an emphasis on clan, family, and community that overrides any greater national interests or even the greater needs of Hinduism itself. This narrow vision can reduce Hindu Dharma to an Indian tradition only, or it can emphasize one Hindu sect or guru while ignoring the greater background of Sanatana Dharma.

One encounters this problem particularly when non-Indians seek to become Hindus. They are often told that one must be born a Hindu and cannot convert to Hinduism, which is not true historically or Hinduism could have never spread so far as it has. We also see this problem with Hindus who have migrated outside of India. They form their own religious communities, which is admirable, but do not make much of an effort to bring non-Indians into these, even when such individuals may approach them seeking to join Hindu Dharma. This further gives the impression that Hinduism is a religion for a particular ethnic group only, not a universal path. It can turn away westerners who have a genuine receptivity to Sanatana Dharma.

:: The Revival of Hinduism through Sanatana Dharma ::

To counter such attempts to limit Hinduism and to bring its teachings out for the benefit of all, we need a revival of Hinduism as Sanatana Dharma, the eternal or universal tradition, for the entire planet. Such a global projection of Sanatana Dharma does not deny the importance of Hinduism as central to India, its culture, its past and its future. But it emphasizes a global and expansive Hinduism, not one that contracts itself according to geographical or ethnic boundaries.

Such a bold assertion of Sanatana Dharma makes Hinduism relevant to all peoples, all religions and all cultures. It removes Hinduism from being restricted to local forms or controlled by the dictates of any particular group. This expansive Sanatana Dharma will naturally honor India and seek a revival of Hinduism in India. But it will do so with a global vision and a linking up with Hindus and dharmic groups worldwide.

There have already been important movements in this in direction. In fact, one can argue that the global spread of Hindu teachings like Yoga, Vedanta and Ayurveda is a sign of Sanatana Dharma arising at a global level. Gurus from India and their teachings have spread to all countries.

Unfortunately, many modern teachers from India have left the greater portion of Hinduism behind in their attempt to gain a broader recognition, to the extent of denying their Hindu roots and not educating their disciples in the greater Hindu tradition, its importance and its values. Instead of honoring the Hindu connection with Sanatana Dharma, they promote an artificial unity of all religions that puts Hindu views and practices in the background or ignores them altogether.

Such teachers state that people can add the spiritual practices of the Hindu tradition, like Yoga and Vedanta, on to any other cultural or religious foundation. They do not encourage people to study and honor the Hindu tradition itself but rather to stay within their own culture's religious tradition, even if it is anti-Hindu. They do not emphasize Hinduism's special connection to Sanatana Dharma, but try to make Hindus feel that all other religions are the same as their own and no real differences exist between them.

In this regard, such teachers of universal spirituality are making a mistake in their understanding of dharma. Sanatana Dharma is not just a spiritual path or what is called a Moksha Dharma, a way of liberation. Sanatana Dharma shows a dharmic way for all aspects of life starting with personal life-style practices, to the family, education, business, intellectual culture and even politics (all the spheres of dharma, artha, kama and moksha).

Unfortunately, the teachers who try to universalize the Moksha Dharma of Hinduism and apply it to all religions leave out the other aspects of Dharma, which includes the dharmic foundation for both social and individual life. A new resurgent global Hinduism or Sanatana Dharma will project all aspects of dharma and not be limited to a Moksha Dharma. It is important that we replace this "radical universalism" of all religions being the same, which is a misinterpretation and diminution of Sanatana Dharma, with a global Hindu and dharmic resurgence that affirms Sanatana Dharma as both a spiritual path and a way of life on all levels.

It is not only Yoga and Vedanta that have universal value, so does the foundation of Hindu Dharma on all levels. This includes Hindu rituals, which are a science of interacting with the cosmic forces, Hindu temples and holy places which are conduits for cosmic energy, Vedic sciences like Ayurveda, Vedic astrology and Vastu, Hindu music and dance and other Hindu art forms. These outer aspects of Hindu or dharmic living can be developed and adapted in different cultural contexts but their basic principles are as enduring as the great truth of Vedanta that there is only one Self in all beings.

On this foundation of dharmic living, both in terms of our outer culture and our inner spiritual practices, people from all lands and cultures can embrace Sanatana Dharma. They can find in Hindu thought a model for an authentic dharmic culture and spirituality that addresses their own individual, social and environmental needs, which they can use to restructure their lives as way of Self-realization. In that dharmic approach, all divisive religious identities will disappear into a greater unity of consciousness, not only with other human beings, but with the entire universe.

గృహేణాచ మనం దేవీ మయాదత్తం శుభ ప్రదే,
శ్రీలక్ష్మీ దేవతాయై నమః ఆచ మనీయం సమర్పయామి
తా|| సకల శుభములు కలుగ జేయుదానా! బంగారు గిన్నెలో సుగంధ ద్రవ్యములు కూర్చి ఆచ మనీయము సమర్పించు చున్నాను స్వీకరింపుము.

శ్లో || పయోదధి ఘ్రతో పేతర శర్కరా మధు సంయుతం
పంచా మృత స్నాన మిదం గృహాణీ కమలాలయే
శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ దేవతాయై నమః పంచా మృత స్నానం సమర్పయామి.
తా|| శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ దేవి! పాలు, పెరుగు, నెయ్యి, తేనె, పంచదారా కలిపి పంచామృత ముతో నిన్ను స్నానము చెయించుచున్నాను. నస్ననుగ్రహింపుము.

శ్లో || గంగాజలం మయానీతం మహాదేవ శిరః స్థితః
శుద్దో దక స్నాన మిదం గృహాణ విధు సోదరీ,
శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ దేవతాయైనమః స్నానం సమర్పయామి.
శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ దేవతాయైనమః శుద్దో దక స్నానం సమర్పయామి.
స్నానానంతరం శుద్ద ఆచమనీయం సమర్పయామి.
తా|| పాల సముద్ర మున పుట్టిన ఓ లక్ష్మీ దేవీ! నీవు స్నానము చేయుటకు శంకరుని తలనుండి వచ్చిన గంగాజలమును తెచ్చినాను. ఈ పవిత్ర జలముతో స్నానము చేయుము.

శ్లో || సురార్చి తాంఘ్రిగ యుగళే దూకూలవ సన ప్రియే
వస్త్ర యుగ్మం ప్రదాస్వామి గృహణ హరివల్ల భె
శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ దేవతా యైనమః వస్త్ర యుగ్మం సమర్పయామి
తా|| సుర లచే సదా పూజింపబడు సుకుమార పాదముల గలదాన! తెల్లని పట్టుచీర కట్టుకున్న ఓ దేవి! నీకు పట్టుబట్టలు కట్ట బెట్టెదను స్వీకరింపుము.

శ్లో || కేయూర కంకణైర్ధ వ్యైర్షార నూపుర మేఖలాః
విభూషణానద్య మూల్యాని గృహాణ ఋషి పూజితే
శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ దేవతా యైనమః ఆభరణాని సమర్పయామి.
తా|| మునీశ్వరు లందరిచేత వ్రళంసించబడిన ఓ లక్ష్మీ నీకు బంగారు కడియాలు, వంకీలు, అందెలు, దండలు సకలా భరణములు ఇచ్చుచున్నాను. వీటి నిధరింపుడు.

శ్లో || హేతప్త మకృతం దేవీ బ్రహ్మవిష్ణు శివకృతం
ఉపవీత మిదం గృహాణత్వం శుభ ప్రదే
శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ దేవతాయై నమః ఉపవీతం సమర్పయామి.
తా || ఓ దేవీ! బంగార పుత్రాడుతో ముత్యాలు గ్రుచ్చిన ఈ యజ్జో పవీతమును ధరింపుము.

శ్లో || కర్పూరాగ రుక స్తూరీ రోచ నాది భిరన్వితం,
గగ ధందాస్యామ్య వాందేవీ ప్రీత్యర్ధం ప్రతిగృహ్యతామ్
శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ దేవతాయై నమః గంధాన్దార యామి.
తా || ఓం సింధు పుత్రికా! కర్పూరము, అగరు, కస్తూరీ వంటి సువాసున వస్తువులు కలిపినా ఈ గంధము స్వీకరింపుము.

శ్లో || అక్ష తాన్ ధవళాన్ ది వ్యాన్ శాలీ యంస్తండులాన్ శుభాన్
హరిద్రా కుంకు మోసేతాన్ గృహాయాబ్ది సుపుత్రికే
శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ దేవతా యైనమః అక్ష తాన్ సమర్పయామి,
తా || క్షీ రాబ్ధి పుత్రికా! పసుపు, కుంకుమ కలిపిన అక్ష తలము సమర్పించు చున్నాను స్వీకరించుము.

శత పత్రైశ్చజకల్షారై: పూజయామి నారి ప్రియే

తా|| ఓనారాయణ ప్రియే! మల్లెలు, మొల్లలు, జాజి, సంపెంగ, తామర, కలువ పూలతో నిన్ను భక్తి శ్రద్దలతో పూజించుచున్నాను. ఈ పూజను గైకొని ఆనందించుము.

శ్రీ మహాలక్ష్మీ వ్రతము దశాంగం గుగ్గులోపేతం సుగంధంచ మనోహరం, ధూపం గాస్యామితే దేవి శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ గృహాణత్వం, ధూపం సమర్పయామి ఘ్రతాన్త వర్తి సంయుక్త మంధ కార వినాశకం, దీపం దాస్యామితే దేవి గృహాణ ముది తాభవ, దీపం సమర్పయామి. నైవేద్యం షడ్ర సోపేతం దధ మధ్వాజ్య సంయుతం నానాభక్ష్య ఫలో పేతం గృహాణ హరి వల్లభె, నైవేద్యం సమర్పయామి. మన సార సుగంధే నమిశ్రితం పుష్పవాసితం, పానీ యంగృ హ్యతాం దేవీ శీతలం సుమనో హరం, పానీయం సమర్పయామి, పూగీ ఫల సమాయుక్తం, నాగ వల్లి దలైర్యుతం, కర్పూర చూర్ణ సంయుక్తం తాంబూలం ప్రతిగృహ్యతాం తాంబూలం సమర్పయామి, నీరాజనం సమానీతం కర్పూరేణ సమన్వితం తుభ్యం దాస్యామ్యహం దేవి గృహ్యతాం విష్ణు వల్లభే, నీరాజనం సమర్పయామి. పద్మాసనే పద్మకరె సర్పలో కైక పూజితే, నారాయణప్రియే దేవి సుప్రీతాభవ సర్వదా,

మంత్ర పుష్పం సమర్పయామి.

యానికానిచ పాపాని జన్మాంతర కృతానిచ తానితాని ప్రణశ్యంతి ప్రదక్షిణ పదే పదే,

ప్రదక్షిణం సమర్పయామి.

ఈ మంత్రము పటనము చేయుచు తోరము కట్టుకోవలసింది || వాయస విధః|| ఏనం పూజ్య కళ్యాణీం లక్ష్మీం స్వశక్తతః దాతవ్యం ద్వాద శారూపం వాయనం హిద్విజాలయే. వాయన దాన మంత్రం ఇందిరా ప్రతి గృహ్నతు ఇందిరా వైద ధాతిచ, ఇందిరా తార కోభాభ్యా మింది రాయై నమోనమః" పూజా విధానము సంపూర్ణము

లక్ష్మీ పురాణము కధా ప్రారంభము పూర్వం పరాశర మహాముని, నారద మహాముని ఇద్దరూ కలిసి త్రిలోక సంచార మునకు బయలు దేరినారు. వారట్లు భూలోకంలో తిరుగుతూ ఒక గ్రామం చేరుకున్నారు, ఆసమయంలో ఆగ్రామవాసులు బ్రాహ్మణ వైశ్య క్షత్రియ శూద్ర జాతుల వారంతా వారి వారి ఇండ్లను గోమయంలో అలికి లక్ష్మీ దేవి పాదములు ముగ్గులు పెట్టిరి. స్త్రీలంద రూతలంటు స్నానములు చేసి క్రొత్త బట్టలు ధరించి మహాలక్ష్మి పూజచేయు చుండిరి. ఆరోజు గురువార మగుటచే అన్ని జాతులవారు కడు నిష్టతో లక్ష్మీదేవిని గానంచేయుచు పూజలు చేస్తున్నారు. ఆ గ్రామవాసుల భక్తి శ్రద్దలకు నారదుడు ఆశ్చర్యపడి పరాశర మునిశతో " మహర్షి ! బ్రాహ్మణులు మొదలు కడజాతి వరకు అందరూ కడు సంతోషముతో పూజ చేస్తున్నారు కదా మీరు చేస్తున్న వ్రత మేది? వివరించ కోరుచున్నాను" అని పలుకగా పరాశముని చిరునవ్వుతో ఇలా చెప్పసాగిరి. " నారద! యీ దినము గురువారము గదా! గురువారం నాడు చేసే పూజను లక్ష్మీ వ్రతమని అనెదరు. సంవత్సరంలోని పన్నెండు మాసములలో మార్గశిర మాసం శ్రేష్ట మైనది. మార్గశిర మాసంలోని ప్రతి లక్ష్మివారం(గురువారం) లక్ష్మీ దేవికీ చాల యిష్ట మైన రోజు. శుక్ల పక్ష దశమీ గురువారం అయిన యెడల ఆ దినము సుద శావ్రత మనెదరు. ఈ వ్రతం శ్రీమహాలక్ష్మీ దేవికి మిక్కిలి ఇష్టమైనది." అని పరాశరముని బోధంపగా- బ్రాహ్మ మానస పుత్రుడగు నారదుడది ఆలకించి " మహనీయా! మున్నుయూ వ్రతమును ఎవరైనా ఆచరించారా? వారెట్టి ఫలములు పొంది నారు! ఆ చరిత్రముకూడ వివరింపు " డని వేడగా పరాశరుడిట్లు చెప్పదొడంగెను. " నారదా, నీవ దృష్ట మంతుడవు. పూర్వంయీ లక్ష్మీవ్రత మాచరించిన ఒక భక్తుని చరిత్రను తెలియజేయుదును శ్రద్దగా ఆలకించి ఆనందింపుము" అని చెప్పసాగేను.

ఒకప్పుడు లక్ష్మీదేవి శ్రీ మహావిష్ణువునకు సేవలు చేస్తు నాధా! యీదినం నా వ్రతం ఆచరించు గురువారం గాన మీరు ఆజ్ఞ యిచ్చినచో నగరంలో సంచ రించి వత్తును " అని ప్రార్దంచెను. లక్ష్మీ కోర్కెను మన్నించి విష్ణువు ముసలి అటులే పోయిరమ్మనెను.లక్ష్మీదేవి సకలాభరణంబులు ధరించి పట్టు వస్త్రములు కట్టుకుని వెళ్ళినది. ఆమె వెళ్ళిన వెనుకనే విష్ణువు ముసలి బ్రాహ్మణ స్త్రీరూపం ధరించి ఒక యింటిలో ప్రవేశించెను. లక్ష్మీదేవి గ్రామ సంచారం చేస్తూ వృద్ద బ్రాహ్మణ స్త్రీ ఇంటికి వచ్చి ఆమెతో " ఓ అవ్వా! ఈరోజు గురువారం, మహాలక్ష్మి వ్రతదినము కదా! ఇల్లు గోమయముతో అలికి ముగ్గులు పెట్టలేదేమి? అని ప్రశ్నించెను. అంత ఆ యవ్వ " అమ్మా! ఆ వ్రతము ఎట్లు చేయవలెను. ఎవరిని పూజ చేయవలెను? వివరించుతల్లి! అని అనగా, లక్ష్మిదేవి మంద హాసముతో " అవ్వా! వ్రతం చేసేవి ధానము చెప్పెదను వినుము. మార్గశిర మాసములో మొదటి లక్ష్మీవారము అనగా గురువారమునాడు ప్రాతః కాలమునే నిద్రలేచి గోమయంతో ఇల్లూ వాకిలీ అలికి లక్ష్మిదేవి పాదములు గల ముగ్గులు పెట్ట వలయును, క్రొత్త కొలత పాత్ర ఒకటి తెచ్చి కడిగి ఎండ బెట్ట వలెను దానిని వివిధ రకాల బొమ్మల తోను, ముగ్గుల తోను వస్త్రములు కట్టుకొని శుచిగావుండి ఒక బల్ల కడిగి, దానిమీద క్రొత్త ధాన్యము ( ఎరుపు, నలుపు, తెలుపు రంగులవి ) కొద్దగా వేయవలెను. మరి కొంచెము క్రొత్త కొలత పాత్రలో వేయవలెను. ఆ పాత్ర పైన మూడు పోక చెక్కలు పసుపు నీటితో కడిగి వుంచవలెను. తెల్ల ధాన్యము ఈ నెలు తీసుకొనివచ్చివాటిని జడ వలె అల్లి మనసులోని కోరిక తలచుకొని వాటిని జటవలె వుంచాలి దాని పై ఎరుపు రంగు వస్త్రము, పువ్వులు వుంచవలెను. లక్ష్మీదేవిని తలచుకొని పువ్వులు, గంధము, ధూప దీపములు సమర్పించవలెను. మొట్ట మొదట పాలు నైవేద్యముచేసి, అన్నము పిండి వంటలు, కూరలతో నైవేద్యం పెట్టవలెను. ఇది ఒక పద్దతి ఇక రెండొ పద్ధతి సుద శావ్రతము. అదెట్లు అనగా మార్గ శిర మాసంలోని శుక్ల దశమీ గురువారమునాడు యీ వ్రతమును చేయవలెను. ఆ దినము ఉదయమున నిద్ర లేచి గోమయమంతో యిల్లు అలికి, వాకిలి కడిగి రంగురంగుల ముగ్గులు లక్ష్మీదేవి పాదములాంటి ముగ్గులు పెట్ట వలెను. తదుపరి స్నానము చేసి ఆసనమును శుభ్రము చేసి ముగ్గులు గీసి, ఇంటిలో తూర్పు దిశగావుంచి, లక్ష్మీదేవి పూజ నిమిత్తము పోక చెక్కను పసుపు నీళ్ళతో శుభ్రముగా కడిగి దానిని పంచామృతముతోను, శుద్దోదకముతొను, స్నానము చేయించి, ఆసనము పై వుంచి గంధము వ్రాసి, పుష్పములు పెట్టి లక్ష్మీదేవిని జపిస్తూ పది ముళ్ళు వేయవలెను. ఐది నాడులు గల దర్భ గడ్జిలో దానిని కప్పవలెను. లక్ష్మీ చిత్రమును వ్రతడోరియాలు వుంచి ధూపం వేయవలెను. తరువాత నైవెద్యం నిమిత్తం వండిన పదార్ధ ములన్నిటినీ సమర్పించవలెను. ముఖ్యముగా పచ్చిబియ్యంకొంత నాన బెట్టి వాటిని పిండిగా దంచి ఉండ్రాళ్ళు చేయవలెను. కొబ్బరికాయ, అరటిపళ్ళు, జున్ను, తీపి పదార్ధాలు అన్నీ పది రకముల వరకూ వుంచి లక్ష్మీదేవికి నైవేద్యం చేయవలెను. ఆ ప్రసాదమును ఇతరులకు కూడా పంచవలెను. అట్లు పంచని యెడల వారికి లక్ష్మీ కటాక్షము లేక సిరి కలుగదు . గురువారమునాడు నూనెతో వంటను గాని, పిండి వంటలుగాని చేయ కూడదు. గురువారము పూజచేయు వారాలు చేప - మాంసం తినకూడదు. తలకు నూనే వ్రాసుకో కూడదు అంతియేకాదు. ప్రత్తితో ఒత్తులు చేసినా, ఆనపకాయ గాని - నీచు కూరలుగాని తినినా మంచం పై పండుకొనినా, రాత్రులు పెరుగన్నం తినినా లక్ష్మీ ఇంటనుండదు ఇంగా దరిద్రులగుదురు. గురువారము నాడు, ప్రాతః కాలమున లేచి, పొయ్యిలోని కాలిన బూడిద తీయక పోయినా, వీధీ వాకిలి తుడవక పోయినా, యింట లక్ష్మి నిలవదు. గురువారము నాడు ఏ స్త్రీ శుచియైన తెల్లని వస్త్రము కట్టుకొనునో వారి యింట లక్ష్మి ప్రసన్నమగును. ఏ స్త్రీ గురువారము నాడు పిల్లలను తిట్టుట కొట్టుట చెయునో ఇల్లు వాకిలి శుభ్రము చేయదే, వంట సామానులు అంట్లుతో మదో సాయం సమయమున గుమ్మము దగ్గర సంధ్యదీపము వుంచదో ఆ స్త్రీ యింట ఒక్కక్షణ మైనను లక్ష్మీ వుండక పోగా ధన హాని సంతాన హాని కలుగ జేయును. అటులనే గురువారం రోజున ఉడకని పదార్ధములు తినుట అమిత నిద్ర, అమావాస్యా సంక్రాంతి తిధులలో అశుభ్రముగావుండి విహరించుట అత్త మామలను సేవింపక కస్సుబుస్సులాడుట చేయు స్త్రీలయింట లక్ష్మీదేవీ పాదము నిలవదు. ఇంకను భోజన మునకు ముందూ తరువాతా కాళ్ళు చేతులు ముఖమూ ఏ స్త్రీ కడుగు కొనదో, ఏ స్త్రీ ఇతరులతో మాట్లాడు నప్పుడు చీటికి మాటికీ నవ్వు చుండునో, ఏ స్త్రీ బూడిద గుమ్మడి కాయను కొయునో అలాంటి స్త్రీలు నీచ బుద్ది గలవారలై అన్న వస్త్రములకు దూరమై పోదురు. ఏ వనిత గురువారము నాడు ధర్మములు చేయక పూజలు చేయక పురుష సాంగత్యమునే సదా కోరునో ఆమె పాప కుపమునకు పోవుటయేగాక బ్రతికి నన్ని రోజులూ తిండికి మొఖము వాయును. గురువారము అమావాస్య- సంక్రాంతి తీధీ యందు నిషిద్ద పదార్ధములను ఏ స్త్రీ భుజించునో ఆమె అవసాన గాలమున అనెక బాధలు పడి చనిపోయిన తర్వాత యమ కింకరులతో నానా బాధలు పడును. జ్ఞానవంతు లైన స్త్రీ ఆ మూడు దినమునతో భక్తిలో దైవ సేవలు ఒక పూట భోజమును, కలిగి నంత లో దాన ధర్మములు చేసిన యెడల అట్టి నారీ మణికి ధన ధాన్యములు కలుగుటయేగాక పుత్ర సంతానము, సంతానాభి వృద్ది కలుగును. ప్రతి స్త్రీ తాను ఆచరించు నిత్య కృత్యములను బట్టి సిరి సంపదలు కలుగును. స్త్రీ ఉదయం నిద్ర నుండి లేచిన వెంటనే ముఖము కడుగు కొనవలెను. అట్లు కడుగు కొనిన స్త్రీ ముఖము చూచినను పాత కములు కలుగుటయే గాక, ఏ కార్యము తలపెట్టినను జయము కలుగదు. స్త్రీ భుజించునప్పుడు దక్షిణం వైపు ముఖము పెట్టుకొని ఏ పదార్ద మూ భజుంచ కూడదు. దీపము లేని చీకటి ఇంట భుజించ కూడదు. చీకటి పడిన తరువాత నూనె వ్రాసుకొనుట చేయకూడదు. ఏ వనిత ఇంటింటికి తిరగడం - భర్త ఆజ్ఞ లేనిదే తనే యిష్ట మొచ్చినట్లు తిరగడం - భర్త మాటలు వినక ఎదురు చెప్పడం - దైవ కార్యములందు, దేవ బ్రాహ్మణుల యందు భక్తి విశ్వాసము లేక యుండుట చేయనో, దాన ధర్మములు చేయదో - అట్టి వనిత గృహము రుద్ర భూమితో సమానము గానెంచి లక్ష్మీదేవి అడుగు పెట్టదు. ఉత్తమ స్త్రీ భర్తను సేవించి భర్త అనుజ్ఞ ప్రకారం నడుచు కొనవలెను. అతిధి సత్కరములు జరుపుచు అత్త మామల సేవలు విడువకుండ ఆచరించుచు, తన బిడ్డా అనే వివక్షత చూపక అందరికీ సమానంగా వడ్డించ వలెను. భర్త సుఖమే తన సుఖమని భర్త కష్టమే తన కష్టమనే భావముతో మెలగినచె లక్ష్మిదేవి సంతోషించి కలకాలము ఆ యింట నుండ గలదు. నారదా! ఈవిధంగా మహాలక్ష్మీ ఆ వృద్ద బ్రాహ్మణ స్త్రీకి గురువార వ్రతము ఆచరించి విధానము చెప్పి, ప్రతివీధికి ప్రతియింటికి వెళ్ళి చూచినది. అప్పటికి ఏ స్త్రీ కూడ నిదుర నుండి లేవలేదు. కాలకృత్యములు తీర్చుకొనలేదు. తలలు విరిబోసుకొని వంటి మీద సట్ట సరిగాలేక గుర్రుపెట్టి నిద్ర పోతున్నారు. వారందరినీ లక్ష్మీదేవి చూచి అసహ్యించుకొని ఒక మాలపల్లెకు వెళ్ళినది. ఆ పల్లెకు ఒక మూలా ఒకానొక బీద హరి జన స్త్రీ ఉండెను. ఆమె ప్రతి దినము ప్రాతః కాలము లేచి గోమయము తెచ్చి యిల్లు వాకిలి శుభ్రము చేసుకొని, బియ్యపు పిండితో మగ్గులు పెట్టి లక్ష్మి పాదముచెత దీపములు పెట్టి బియ్యం వుంచి ధూప దీప నైవేద్యములు సమర్పించి, పద్మాసనములో కూర్చుండి లక్ష్మిని ధ్యానించుచుండెను. లక్ష్మీదేవి వెళ్ళు సరికి ఆ స్త్రీ భక్తితో పూజలు చేయుచున్నందున మహాలక్ష్మీ సంతసించినది. ఆ పరిశుభ్ర స్థలమున తన రెండు పాదములుంచి ఆమెతో " ఓ భక్తు లారా ! నేటితో నీ కష్టములు తీరగలవు. నీ నిశ్చల భక్తికి సంత సించితిని. నీ కేమి కావలయునో రుకొనుము" అని అనగా శ్రీమహాలక్ష్మీ సాక్షాత్ దర్శనము చూడగానే ఆమెనోట మాట రాక ఏ వరమును కోరుకొనలేక యినది. మరల లక్ష్మిదేవి ఇలా అన్నది. నీవు బ్రతికి నాన్నళ్లు అష్ట ఐశ్వర్యములతొ తులతూగుదువు. జన్మాంతరమున నీవు వైకుంట మునకు వచ్చెదవు గాక! నా వ్రతమును చేయుచుండుము. నీకు శ్రీహరి అనుగ్రహము కూడ కలుగును " అని చెప్పెను. మహాలక్ష్మీ చెప్పిన ప్రకారముగా ఆ హరి జన స్త్రీ కడునిష్టతో ధ్యానము చేయు చుండెను. లక్ష్మీదేవి పాదముల యందే మనస్సులగ్నము చేసి యున్నందున ఆమె భక్తికి లక్ష్మీదేవి ఆనందించి, ఆమెవున్న పూరి గుడిసెను పెద్ద భవంతిగా చేసినది. ఇంటికి నాలుగుమూలలా ధన రాశులున్నవి. దాని వలన ఆమె భాగ్యవంతురాలగుటచే గాక అయిదుగురు పుత్రులును కలిగిరి. ఓ నారదా! ఇది వినుము. ఆ హరి జన స్త్రీకీ లక్ష్మీదేవి వలన ఐశ్వర్యమును కలిగి నదంతయు బలరాయుడు తనే దివ్య దృష్టి వలన తెలుసుకొని మహా కోపంతో విష్ణుమూర్తి వద్దకు వెళ్ళి" లక్ష్మిదేవి మాల పల్లెకుపోయి అంటరానిమాల స్త్రీకి సిరి సంపదలు ఇచ్చినందున

మహానేరము చేసినది గాన లక్ష్మిని నీ మందరిము లోనికి రానీయ " వద్దని చెప్పినాడు. అంతలో గ్రామసంచారము చేసుకొని లక్ష్మీదేవి విష్ణుమందిరము లోనికీ ప్రవేశించు చుండగా బలరాముడు ద్వారమున అడ్డముగా నిలబడి లోనికి రావద్దని శాసించెను.ఆ సమయములో అతని కండ్లు శరీరము ఎర్రబడి పోయెను. పళ్లు పటపట కొరుకుచుండెను. " శ్రీ హరీ! నీవు ఈమె ముఖము చూడ వద్ద" నెను. అన్న ఆజ్ఞ ప్రకారం లక్ష్మీని విడిచి పెట్టుటకు హరి ఒప్పుకొనెను. వెంటనే లక్ష్మీదేవి తాను ధరించివున్న బంగారునగను తీసివేసి పట్టుచీర విడచి, చిరిగిపోయిన వస్త్రములు ధరించి, ఇల్లు విడిచి వెళ్ళవద్దని పరి చారికలు ఎంత బ్రతిమాలి ననూ," మరల వచ్చెద" నని చెప్పి వెడలి పోయెను. బలరాముడు, శ్రీహరి - మందిరము లోపల ప్రతిగదినీ చూశారు. ఆ మందిరములోని ఏ గది చూచినని వెలవెల పోయివున్నది. ధనాగారంలో ధనములేదు. వస్తు సామాగ్రి అంతయు మాయమైనది. వంటలు వండుటకు పదార్ధములులెవు. బంగారు బిందెలు మట్టి కుండలుగా మారిపోయినవి.ఆఖరికి త్రాగడానికి పాత్ర కాని, నీరుకాని లేకపోయి నందున దాహముతో ఉపవాసముండి నిద్ర పోయినారు. మరునాడు ప్రాతః కాలమున ముఖము కడుగు కొనుటకైనను నీరు దొరకలేదు. ఇక వారి కేమియు తోచలేదు.పిచ్చి ఎత్తి నట్లయింది. అంత బలరాముడు, అంత బలరాముడు, జగన్నాధుడగు విష్ణుమూర్తితో " తమ్ముడూ! మనము నిన్నటి దినమున ఆహారం తీసుకోలేదు చాలా నీరస పడి పోయియున్నాము. ఈ దిన మైనను తిండి తినక పోతె ఎలాబ్రతకగలం? అన్నీ కొరత గానున్న విగాన మనము బిచ్చమెత్తి అయినా ప్రాణములను నిలబెట్టుకోవాలి. గనక ఇద్దరము బయలుదేరు దమురమ్ము" అని అనగా, జగన్నాధుడు అంగీకరించి యుద్ధరూ సాధు వేషములు వేసుకొని భిక్షాటనకు బయలు దేరినారు. వారు ఎవరింటికి వెళ్ళి అడిగనను వారు కపట సన్నాసులు, చోరులని ఒక్కరూ భిక్షం పెట్టలేదు. కసరి పొమ్మన్నారు. అలా వీరిద్దరూ తిరుగుచు ఒక షావుకారు యింటికి వెళ్ళి " భిక్షాందేహి" అన్నారు. ఆ ధనికుడు వారిని ఆదరించి కూర్చుండ బెట్టి భోజన పదార్దలు తెచ్చుటకులోనికి పోయిచూడగా పదార్ధములన్నీ మాయమైపోయినాయి. అక్కడ కూడా వారికి భోజనము దొరక నందున బలరాముడూ, విష్ణుమూర్తి ఆకలిబాధతో తూలిపోతూ ఒక చెరువు దగ్గరకు వెళ్ళి నారు, ఆ కొలనునిండా పద్మములు విర పూసియున్నవి" సరే వీటి తూడు కాయలను తిని ఇప్పటి ఆకలిబాధ తీర్చుకుందా" మని చెరువులో దిగగా ఆ చెరువు నీరంతా ఎండి పోయెను. యింక చేయునది లెక నిరాశతో వెళ్ళిపోయినారు. అటుల వెళ్ళగా ఒక తపః శ్మాలి కుటీరము కనబడి నది. అతనిని సమీపించి ఆకలి తీర్చుటకు ఏదైనా పెట్టమన్నారు. మునితాను తినుటకు వుంచుకున్న పాలు అన్నము ఇవ్వబోగా ఆ పాత్రలోని అన్నము, పాలు మాయమైపోయినవి. ఇంక వారు చేయునది లేక ఇద్దరూ సముద్రం వైపుగా వెళ్ళిరి. సముద్రమున నిత్యానంద స్వాముల వారి ఆశ్రమము కనిపించిగా అచ్చటకు వెళ్ళినారు. అక్కడ అన్న వస్త్రములకు లోటులేదు. ఎవ్వరైనా ఆశ్రమములో ఎన్నిది నములుండి నను ఎంత భుజించినను అక్షయపాత్ర వలె తరగదు. కాని బలరామ జగన్నాధ స్వాములు అకడకు వెళ్ళగానే లక్ష్మీ దేవి ఏ పదార్ధమూ లేకుండా చేసినది. తీక్షణమైన సూర్యుని తాపమునకు విష్ణువు సొమ్మసిల్లి పడి పోయెను. బలరాముడు తమ్మునికి సేద తీర్చెను . అక్కడ నుండి బయలుదేరి అన్నదమ్ములిద్దరూ మరియొక భవనము చేరుకున్నారు. అది లక్ష్మిదేవి నివసిస్తున్న భవనం చాలా దినములనుండి తిండి లేక నీరసించివున్న వారిద్దరినీ లక్ష్మిదేవి చూచినది. జాలి కలిగినది. వెంటనే ఆమె స్వయంగా పిండి వంటలతో భోజనము తయారుచేసి దాసీల చేత వారికి స్నానమునకు నీరు పెట్టించి, చెలికత్తెల ద్వారా వారికి భోజనం వడ్డించెను. వారు సంతృప్తిగా కడుపునిండా భుజించి బయటనున్న అరుగుమీద విశ్ర మించారు. కాని వారికి నిద్ర పట్టలేదు. ఆ యిల్లు, ఆ ప్రాంతం, ఆ వంటకములు అన్ని వింతగా తోచినవి ఆలోచిస్తున్నారు.అంత ఒక చెలికత్తె వచ్చి " ఓ స్వాములారా! మీదే గ్రామము? ఎందుండి ఎక్కడకు పోవుచున్నారు! మీకు భార్యా బిడ్డలు వున్నారా ! ఎలాగు ఎందుకు తిరుగుతున్నారు! అని అడుగగా - ఏమి చెప్పవలెనో తోచక వారు ఒకరి మొక మొకరు చూచుకొనుచు శ్రీ హరి ఇట్లు చెప్పినాడు. " ఈతడు నా అన్నయగు బలరాముడు. నేను శ్రీహరిని. మాతొందర పాటువలన నాయిల్లాలగు లక్ష్మీదేవిని ఇంటి నుండి వెడలగొట్టి ఈ కష్టములను తెచ్చుకొంటిమి. ఏ స్త్రీవలన అష్ట ఐశ్వర్యములు కల్గునో, ఏ నారీ మణి కరుణా కటాక్షము వలన వంశాభి వృద్ద కలుగునో, ఏ వనితామణి ఎల్ల వేళలందు తననునమ్మి కొలిచినవారి ఇండ్లలొ మెలగుచుండునో అటువంటి లక్ష్మిదేవి మమ్ముల్ని విడిచి వెళ్ళిపోయినది అప్పటి నుండి మాకు దరిద్రమూ కష్టాలూ కలిగినవి " అని చెప్పెను. ఆ దాసీవలన ఆ యిల్లు లక్ష్మీదేవి మందిరమే అని తెలిసికొని, చాలా ఆనందించినారు.

బలరాముడు విష్ణువుతో " సోదరా, నీవు లక్ష్మీదేవి వద్దకు వెళ్ళి మనం చేసిన తప్పును క్షమించ మని చేతులు పట్టుకొని అర్ధించుము" అని చెప్పిలోనికి పంపెను. శ్రీహరి లోనికి వెళ్ళగానే లక్ష్మీదేవి భర్తను చూచి నమస్కరించి, నీళ్ళతో హరి పాదములు కడిగి ఆ నీటిని తలపై జల్లుకొని పువ్వులతో పూజించి, ఇటుల పలికెను. " నాధా! మీ అన్నదమ్ములిద్దరూ నన్ను ఇంటి నుండి వెళ్ళ గొట్టినారు గదా! యిప్పుడెలా నాయింట భుజింనారు. ఛండాలపుదాని ఇంటికెలా వచ్చినారు? ప్రాణాలు పోసినప్పుడు జాతి, భేదములు అడ్డుకూడదా" అని నిష్టూర ములాడెను. శ్రీహరి చిరునవ్వుతో " ప్రియా! మేమిద్దరము భిక్ష మెత్తు కోవడం అంతా తెలుసుకున్నారు. నీవు మాకు భోజనం పెట్టడం కూడా అందరూ చూచినారు. మాకు శిక్ష సరిపోయినది. నీవు లేనందున వైకుంటము చిన్నభోయినది. నిన్నువదిలినందున మాకు అన్నీ లోపములె జరిగినవి. గాన, మా వెంటరమ్ము వైకుంటానికి పోవుదము " అని పలుకగా శ్రీహరి మాటలకు లక్ష్మీదేవి యింట అడుగు పెట్టగానే అన్నీ యధా ప్రకారముగా మారిన విధ నాగార మంతా ధనముతో, బంగారముతో నిండినది. వస్తు వాహనాలతో, దాసీజన ములతో భక్త కోటితె వైకుంటము కలకలలాడెను. కాన ఓ నారదా గురువారము నాడు లక్ష్మి పూజచేసి ఈ పురాణము చదివినను, లేక వినినను అట్టి వారలకు వెనుకటి జన్మలొ చేసిన పాపములు నశించి మోక్షము కలుగుటయేగాక లక్ష గొదానములు చేసినంత ఫలితముకలిగి అష్ట ఐశ్వర్యములతో తులతూగుదురు. ఈ లక్ష్మీ పురాణము పటనము ప్రతీ మానవుడు ముక్తి నొందుటకు మార్గ దర్శకము కాగలదు. అని, పరాశర ముని నారదునకు లక్ష్మీ పురాణమును వివరింనాడు.
