HSS calls upon CNN to be sensitive to the Hindus in America

March 12, 2017For Immediate Press Release HSS calls upon CNN to be sensitive to the Hindus in AmericaHindu Americans are deeply concerned with CNN’s misrepresentation of the Hindu religion and cultural traditions in the show, “Believer.” By focusing on a tiny, obscure and fringe sect, the show further increases the already prevalent misunderstanding about Hindus at a time when the country is going through a period of concern and fear. The grotesque practices portrayed in the show give a totally misleading impression of a faith of 1.25 billion Hindus with a civilization that spans thousands of years. Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh calls upon CNN to be sensitive to the more than 3 million Hindus living and working in the United States who belong to a tradition with major tenets including peace and nonviolence and who cherish living in harmony with their neighbors. While Americans are struggling to understand their neighbors and different faiths that have enriched the American society, CNN should be part of the effort to bring us together rather than pushing us apart by sensationalized journalism.

HSS celebrates Guru Vandana across the United States!

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh has been displaying this appreciation for our teachers here in the United States through the Guru Vandana program, an annual event which offers Hindu students an opportunity to honor and recognize their teachers and their role in shaping who they have become. These programs consist of inviting educators to our shakhas and honoring them in our Hindu tradition. Educators are treated to cultural performances, traditional food, and mementos among other things which differ from shakha to shakha. Teachers from the elementary to high school levels, principals, and even district superintendents have all participated in these activities with very positive feedback.

Perhaps the most instrumental external influence on the dreams, aspirations, and character of a boy or girl comes from that of a teacher. Teachers spend more time with children than even their parents, and undoubtedtly impact their upbringing to a level which is felt even after they have left the stages of student hood. In our Hindu culture, this amount of responsibility of the shaping of young minds we have bestowed upon our teachers, or gurus, is greatly revered and respected.

HSS honored teachers across the US

During the Month of May 2014, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, USA (HSS) honored teachers across the US, during month long events of Guru Vandana. Each year, US celebrates first week of May as “teachers appreciation week” and Tuesday of the same week as “National Teachers Day”. Hindu philosophy and culture considers Guru as “Supreme Being” who invokes and sustains light of knowledge while eliminating the darkness of ignorance. Our lives are touched and inspired by countless teachers in schools, colleges and many other activities that we participate and excel in. To acknowledge and appreciate these Gurus who silently shape our lives, HSS volunteers across the nation held Guru Vandana during their weekend activities in the Month of May and at some places in June.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, USA (HSS) wishes you, your family and friends a happy, healthy and prosperous Varsha Pratipada, beginning
of Hindu New Year. Varsha Pratipada is also popularly known
as Yugadi and corresponds to the Shalivahana Shaka in some part of
Bharat and in the rest, it corresponds to the Vikrama Samvat,
corresponding to the era beginning 78 A.D. and 57 B.C. respectively.
This day recalls the inspiring occasion when the invading Sakas from
Central Asia were vanquished by the great emperors Shalivahana and
Vikramaditya in the 1st Century A.D.

Traditionally, in India Raksha Bandhan is an occasion to celebrate
special relation of brother and sister. For ages, sister ties a thread
called Rakhi to brother’s wrist and reminds him of his duties to protect
her. HSS celebrates Raksha Bandhan as Universal Oneness Day where our

Irvine Shakha Celebrates Guru Vandana

The Irvine Shakha of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) celebrated Guru Vandana (Teacher Appreciation Day) on Sunday, May 2, 2010. The event was a huge success with over a dozen teachers attending the event and the total attendee list crossing the three digit mark, beating everyone's expectations. The event was inaugurated by Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati , of Kali Mandir, lighting a lamp while chanting sacred verses from Hindu scriptures. The lighting of the lamp symbolized removal of the darkness of ignorance by the light of knowledge. This ceremony was followed by a presentation from Gnanashanmugam Elumalai ji, a HSS Karyakarta, on the importance of the Guru. He explained that the word “Guru” is made up of “Gu” – darkness or ignorance – and “Ru” – the remover. Hence, the Guru is someone who removes the ignorance and replaces it with knowledge. (Learn more @ http://www.hindueducation.org (http://www.hindueducation.org))

HSS announces fourth year of "Health for Humanity" Marathon

Hindu
Swayamsevak Sangh USA (HSS) announces its fourth year of an offering
(“yajna”)
of one million Sun Salutations, known as Surya Namaskar, to create
awareness about Yoga and its advantages in achieving a healthy body,
mind
and spirit.

Surya
Namaskar integrates simple Yoga postures
of well-balanced movements in 10-steps that along with easy breathing technique
can provide immense health benefits to both body and mind. Therefore, “Surya
Namaskar Yagna” is also rightly, termed as “Health for Humanity” marathon.

Each
year Hindus worldwide celebrate January 14th as Makar Sankranti – a day that
marks a change of season as the sun enters the sign of Capricorn or
Makar. Makar Sankranti ushers in longer days; thus the festivity
symbolizes sunshine in life. Therefore, to mark this occasion, HSS will
conduct a collective Surya Namaskar Yajna from January 16th to January 31st, 2010.

HSS Celebrates Universal Oneness Day with Fayetteville's Mayor

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), USA 501(c) (3) Non-profit is celebrating Universal Oneness Day during the month of August all over the US.This event is a part of the festival of Raksha Bandhan. The word Raksha in Sanskrit means to protect and bandhan means obligation. Centuries ago during challenging times in Indian history when India faced numerous invasions, sisters used to tie a simple thread on their brother's wrist, reminding him of his responsibility to protect her. Over the years this celebration evolved from individual brother-sister relationship to individual-societal relationship and the responsibilities of individual towards society across all of its sections.Working in that direction, volunteers of the HSS chapter of Arkansas got an opportunity to meet with Mayor of Fayetteville Mr. Lioneld Jordan on August 13, 2009 at 2.00 PM. The Meeting lasted for 30 minutes.

HSS Volunteers Organize Food Drive on the Occasion of Diwali

Serving the poor is the true service to the God . During 2008 Diwali 4 shakhas in Midwest Sambhag - Abhimanyu shakha at Shaumburg, Bloomington shakha, Eagen shakha and Shree Ram shakha, Indianapolis took up food drive to bring into reality this age old adage from our Hindu scriptures. Although all the shakhas took up this initiative independently, the common thread that seemed to be running through them was the urge to something for the society in which they live. That was also thought of as a reasonable way to assimilate in the local community. History of food drives in Midwest dates back to 2006 Diwali when Bloomington shakha 1st demonstrated it successfully. This year 3 more shakhas joined in to execute this initiative locally. Needless to say that each of these food drives were planned meticulously and executed diligently. Each one of them had some local flavor too. Like in Bloomington the tradition has been to conduct the food drive in collaboration with the local Indian Organization.

Hindus in New Jersey celebrate Makar Sankranti with Surya Namaskar

The sun. We, as living breathing creatures, owe a lot to the sun. It is our greatest source of energy; the reason life can flourish on our planet. And so, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh decided to pay tribute to that forgotten hero who always delights in giving light to others, while staying out of the spotlight himself. The surya namaskar is considered by many to be the ultimate form of prayer to the sun. What better way to pay tribute to the sun? And what better time to pay this tribute than during the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti? The annual HSS Sankranti utsav which included a surya namaskar competition, was held in Ved Mandir, along with lunch and the extremely enjoyable bal mela afterwards.

In the months of September and October - 2007, youths of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) successfully conducted Speaker on Campus project in several US Universities. Various students from different universities came together and felt a need for bringing more awareness on campus about Hindu way of life. It is but surprising that even in the current state of world, people have overlooked social model which propagated the thought of World is but one family and Let all be happy, prosperous, and healthy . The students felt that this is their responsibility and took up the project to bring forth such a stream of thoughts. SoC is not only a platform for awareness about Hindu way of life but also a forum for people to come together and share their thoughts about it. More than thirty Universities in fifteen states with a large number of young professionals and faculty staff actively participated in this project.

Ashwini Javlekar's Reflection on Albany Sangh Shiksha Varg (SSV)

Finally the saffron banner that proudly stated: Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh was tied up and in place. After an exhausting 45 minutes, a few other sevikas and I stood, staring at our work. The banner hung perfectly over the picture of Bharat Mata, above the dwaja. Everybody has a particularly memorable event during their summer vacations; mine was Sangha Shikshika Varg (SSV). SSV is a seven day, once a year training camp for swayamsevaks. On the east coast, this year SSV was held from July 8 th-15th at two college campuses in Albany, New York—Troy campus for sevikas and Albany campus for sevaks.
