The facility space will be transformed into an elegant ballroom-style setting where fathers and daughters can enjoy music, dancing, a shared meal, and meaningful time together. Taste By Chef Kevin will provide a five-star dining experience, while Nicole Smedley Events will create the event’s décor, helping to make the day memorable for participating families.

The event was designed to reinforce the importance of maintaining parent-child relationships during incarceration. Organizers say children who maintain healthy connections with incarcerated parents often experience stronger emotional well-being, improved resilience, and better academic outcomes. These relationships can also play an important role in supporting successful reentry and family reunification.

“Parent-to-child connection is critical even during difficult seasons,” said Dr. Letitia Scott Jackson. “This event will create a safe and beautiful space for daughters to feel celebrated and for fathers to show up in a meaningful way.”

Before the prison sentence, before the pain, before the years lost behind bars, J. Lewis was just a young kid from Detroit chasing a dream.

Raised on Joy Road in Detroit, Michigan—the same area that helped shape rapper Tee Grizzley—music was always part of his life. As a teenager, he spent countless hours recording music, meeting with record labels, and building a buzz through out Detroit’s underground music scene.

By 2012, determined to take his career to the next level, Lewis packed his bags and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, one of the hottest music capitals in the world. The future looked bright.

He was connected to industry professionals, including a road manager who had worked with August Alsina. He found himself working with respected producers such as Zaytoven and Cassius Jay. Opportunities were opening up and his music career appeared to be gaining momentum.

Then everything changed.

In 2014, while driving through Buck head, Lewis became involved in a confrontation that would alter the course of his life forever.

According to Lewis, an argument erupted after a cyclist became upset during a traffic encounter. What started as a verbal confrontation quickly escalated. Moments later, Lewis made a decision that he says he has regretted every day since.

He was arrested and eventually sentenced to 15 years in prison after accepting a plea agreement rather than risk a much harsher outcome at trial.

What followed was a nightmare.

For over a decade, Lewis witnessed the harsh realities of prison life firsthand.Violence, stabbings, robberies, and constant fear became part of everyday life. Moving from facility to facility, he says the environment remained the same.

But despite the chaos surrounding him, one thing never changed: his passion for music.

While incarcerated,Lewis continued writing songs, recording music through unconventional means, and sending tracks to engineers on the outside to be mixed and mastered. While many people would have given up, he spent 12 years building a catalog of music from behind prison walls.

The emotional toll was immense.

During his incarceration,Lewis lost seven family members, including his father. There were moments when he considered ending his own life. Yet through every setback, he says faith in God kept him moving forward.

Today, Lewis is residing in a transitional center and continues fighting to rebuild his life. The struggle isn’t over. Every day remains a challenge. But his dream remains alive.

The chorus is just “Bom Bom Oh Chet” on repeat. It is a vibe record, plain and simple. There is nothing in this song about soldiers. There is nothing in this song about veterans. The entire track has nothing to do with any of that.

So when Travis Scott steps on his verse and drops this line:

“Vetements to the Met, NY to TX, Soldier, ain’t no vet”

The soldier and vet part has absolutely nothing to do with this song. Which means it has to mean something else. And it does.

Who Is RKM Legend?

RKM Legend, born Ryan Kelly Moreland, is an emerging Houston artist and the younger cousin of the late DJ Screw, the man who invented chopped and screwed music and is the foundation of Houston’s entire rap identity. RKM Legend has built his whole brand around that bloodline and around the idea that he is owed something by Houston’s music industry.

He believes Travis Scott’s camp blocked his career behind the scenes. So he went public with it.
