An anticipated announcement from Microsoft will reveal that it’s changing it’s mind about completely rethinking the Windows experience. The two biggest complaints about Windows 8 are the fact that there is no familiar Start button or ability to boot right into the Desktop. According to ZDNet & Mary Jo Foley, this is set to change in the first service pack for Windows 8.

While there will be an option now to boot right into the Desktop, the return of the Start Button appears to be more of facade or a way to retrain frustrated users. Although there will be a Start button in the lower left hand corner (show below), it will not launch a traditional Start menu, rather the Metro interface will pop up essentially making the Start button as useful as the Windows key found on your keyboard.

In my opinion these are great compromises to try to resolve these issues. I believe Microsoft really should’ve done a better job at trying to change people’s habits and take a less abrupt approach initially. They are convinced in their vision of how important touch will be for future devices, hopefully they don’t burn too many bridges along the way.

Windows 8.1 is expected to be released around August 2013.

What do you think of Windows 8? What would you change?

First of all, Bitcoin is a real currency in which you can buy in to, sell and purchase goods and services with. Some of the benefits of Bitcoin are that transactions are instant, can be accepted anywhere around the world and generally have no processing fees.

Bitcoin is known as an open-source online commodity. In it’s exchange it uses a peer-to-peer encryption over the internet and has no central governing authority. The servers that create the currency are called bitcoin miners or bitminers.

As many speculated and feared, a Bitcoin collapse was very possible. As they say, greed turns to fear and with the bubble of the bitcoin driving this greed, it didn’t take much for the pendulum to drastically shift in the other direction.

At it’s peak a bitcoin was valued at around $260, but drastically and dramaticly lost half it’s value. Here is an view of the recent crash by Real Time Bitcoin Data Services.

Here is a video explaining more about the Bitcoin, it’s rise and crash.

But for someone trying to get to the top, their livelihood or career may be on the line, so the question is far from trivial.

There are several ways to make it to the top but try not to focus as much on “tricks” as the real question you should be asking is “How do I EARN a top spot on Google?”.

You EARN a top spot by understanding how Google indexes and identifies quality and relevant content and producing quality content that people want to read and share across Social Media and link back to and refer to across the web on other sites.

Although we won’t go into ALL of the many ways to optimize your content for Google, we’ll start with the most important things.

Here is a checklist for beginners trying to get to the top or first page of Google by priority:

1. Title Tags

Make your title tags (The titles of your pages on your website) short and sweet. Keep them under 60 characters, carefully choosing the most relevant keywords that people will be searching for.

2. Quality Content

Make sure you have good quality content. Pages and posts that have great title tags but very short, poorly written content will not rank well.

3. Shareability

Social sharing raises the relevancy and value of your content to google, boosting your ranking higher as it sees your content has importance and relevancy for certain terms. If you create good quality content that Google can index easily, people will visit, enjoy and want to share.

Make sure you have convenient Social Sharing buttons for Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest at the very least. You may consider adding LinkedIn too if applicable to your target audience. If you include too many share buttons, it may make it confusing, messy and hard to share.

What about linkbuilding?

Although it is important to have quality, relevant sites linking to you, it is my opinion that people get bogged too far into getting links and not enough attention is paid to the first three items above. The other problem is that people may be tempted to purchase links and settle for low quality links which can severely damage your Search Engine Rankings.

Let the links come naturally

The emerging linkbuilding philosophy is that build quality and optimized content and the links will come.

Not so bad, huh?

Google isn’t trying to trick you or make it hard for you to rank well. Google is trying to give searchers the best search experience possible and give them the best, most relevant results.

Part App, Launcher & OS, the announcement went beyond just a single Facebook product as expected.

HTC also unveiled a Facebook-centric Smartphone built on Google’s Android OS and on an HTC handset at it’s Menlo Park campus today.

“Today we’re finally gonna talk about that facebook phone” Zuckerberg said in his opening monologue. ”We’re going to talk about how you can transform your android phone into a great social phone”

“Our mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. Open means having access to information and being able to learn about the world around you.”

Although the idea of “Facebook Phones” is not considered a threat to the Smartphone juggernauts such as Apple & Samsung hardware-wise, the usability and familiarity of Facebook features could entice many looking for a mid range, affordable smartphone.

The long rumored ‘Facebook Home’ experience brings Facebook to forefront of your Smartphone. Much more than a custom ‘launcher’, this interface has deep integration with your Facebook, Friends, Activities and features only found in Facebook.

As Mark says “The phone is centered around People not Apps.”

The first Android handsets that will be supported will be the HTC One, One X, Samsung S3, Note II, Galaxy S4.

Facebook Home will be available from the Google Play Store on Android phones on April 12th (US only initially) and eventually on Android tablets, Windows Phones and on the iPhone & iPad.

Here are the features of Facebook Home:

‘Chat heads’ instant personal messaging and grouping

‘Cover feed’ lock screen, a visually rich news feed before you even unlock

Standard Android App launcher

Quick messaging with ‘Chat heads’

Unified messaging with ‘Chat head’ interface for standard text messaging Facebook Groups and Facebook messages

HTC First

First standing for “Social First”. The first Smartphone to have Facebook Home preloaded.

Here is what we know about the hardware of the HTC First, the first “Facebook Phone”:

4.3inch display with 720HD resolution

Snapdragon S4 Dual Core processor

1GB RAM

5MP rear and 1.6MP Front Facing Camera.

Will come in Black, White, Red & Sky Blue.

It will be available exclusively on AT&T on April 12th for shockingly, only $99. Available for Preorder today.

Tip 1: Optimize your Title

Include Keywords in your title

You essentially want to name your video exactly what people will be searching for in YouTube / Google. Sometimes you’ll only want to include some keywords because of the nature of your video, but this will dramatically increase your viewership.

Don’t “Keyword Stuff”

Matching popular search queries will be a plus, but keyword stuffing will decrease the value of ALL of the keywords, so try to be short and concise when including keywords. You probably won’t be able to include all the possible keywords, but make an educated guess as to what CORE keywords will increase chances of people finding your video.

Catchy names make a difference

Although keywords are important for getting your YouTube videos to show up in listings, it’s catchy names that will be the final bit of enticing you’ll need to get people to actually view your video. This is especially important when competing in an highly competitive space where there will be a lot of people with similarly titled videos.

Balance of Core Keywords, Not stuffing and Catchyness

It’s important to take all of the above into consideration and do your best. You won’t always get to the top, but you’ll notice a big uptick in views and interactions over time using these title tips.

Tip 2: Tags

Include Tags

This is another chance at including some keywords to leverage search queries in YouTube & Google. Similarly to a Blog post with Tags, Tags give your content an opportunity to show up for keywords not present in your Title or in a Blog’s case in the content itself.

Don’t include unrelated tags

Including unrelated tags, although may seem like a good strategy to attract a broader audience it can lead people to give your video a thumbs down. This hurts your content because will hurt relevancy for title and keyword terms you chose plus will not show up near the top of videos for people that filter their YouTube results by rating.

Tip 3: Include a good description

Focus on Keywords and Value

A description is not a place to keyword stuff, but it is recommend to include the core keywords somewhere in there. Filling in a solid description will even increase the chances of someone giving your video a thumbs up.

Promote other relevant Videos

This may also be a great place to include a link to another video if it is somewhat relevant, boosting that video’s relevancy even more. It’s essentially like giving the linked video a recommendation or a seal of approval, increasing the value of it.

In Conclusion

It is important to be thorough in filling in titles, tags and descriptions if you want your video to shine among a world millions of videos. In the end YouTube Optimization and good, relevant content will lead your videos to becoming highly rated, more shared and inevitably raise up all of your efforts over time.

A Responsive designed site has the ability to adapt to any screen size, whether it be Smartphone, Tablet, Laptop, Desktop or any other internet enabled device. You aren’t creating separate designs or Apps as done before, but one design that contains code enabling it to change based on the proportions and resolution of your screen.

Here is a quick tutorial on Designing Responsively.

What is Responsive Design?

Navigation Menu to Dropdown Menu For Smaller Screens

Using Media Queries

FYI: Both HipVine.com & Services.HipVine.com have responsive designs. Check out those two designs and shrink your window to watch them adapt.

The impact of Rich Snippets can already be seen in Google Search Engine results when you look up particular people, recipes, events, companies in a specific industry and other areas using specialized markup on websites.

Authorship will allow you to take credit and link up with content you have written. Another enhancement from using authorship markup is that your picture from your Google+ profile will show up in Search results, giving your posts extra visibility.

Here is an introduction and discussion on working with Structured data such as Rich Snippets and Authorship with Dan Petrovic of DejanSEO and friends in a recent Google Hangout.

Matt Cuts, Google’s resident Search Engine Optimization expert and one of the original Google employees, has a chance to talk about the philosophy of the SEO term.

Let’s examine the common language around getting your site seen on Google and other major Search Engines:

SEO – Search Engine Optimization

Pros:

It’s probably the most direct and simple way to explain what most people want, which is to organically rank high in Search Engines by optimizing your website based on what Google’s algorhythm values for you to rank high for the terms you want.

Cons:

The term “SEO” for some has a shady reputation for being limited to link building, buying links, spamming and even hacking.

SEM – Search Engine Marketing

Pros:

Search Engine Marketing is a broader term that can encompasses many Marketing strategies focused on Search including PPC (Google Adwords) AND Optimizing your site for Organic high visibility.

Cons:

Some may view SEM as being closer to the Advertising department than part of your Web Development. Traditionally this term has not necessarily encompassed Search Engine Optimization techniques and has focused more on Paid strategies such as Google Adwords and other PPC programs.

SXP – Search Experience Optimization

Matt Cutts offers a new term.

Pros:

A much “softer” term that focuses on the user rather than the goal. This term allows people to consider many aspects of the Search Engine experience and can encompass an expanding number of ways relevant customers can be led to you.

Cons:

Marketers may have trouble marketing their services to people who are focused on the bottom line and will want to use a term that is bit more focused on the Business value rather than Consumer value .

Ironically, the Acronym just isn’t SEO friendly in the relevant way.

Conclusion

Matt Cutts concludes that he believes SEO will probably stick around as the predominant term for Marketing Search visibility strategies. The key is to identify and educate the public that there are both “White hat” and “Black hat” SEO strategies and like anything else there is always a gray area to be aware of.

So do you think SEO should change it’s name? If so, to what?

Just like Social Media in the late 2000′s, Content Marketing is the Marketing Buzz word of the 2010′s. Content Marketing is starting to morph into the larger term encompassing Social Media, Blogging, Online advertising and other forms of Digital marketing.

Content Marketing is essentially the creation and sharing of content to build brand awareness, interest and loyalty. Many Marketing professionals refer to Content marketing as both the oldest AND newest form of Marketing.

Telling a story through creating content to a potential customer has been in practice since the dawn of the Marketing industry. Now people are starting to pull away from focusing so much on a Social Media strategy and more of a focus on the larger Content strategy that encompasses SEO, Social Media, Blogging, Print, Video and other forms of media.

For Business owners who want to go beyond the “Fluffy” feel good Social theory and want to know how to get leads and sales, Content marketing has been proven to be the real deal.

In this Video, the experts at ClickTecs give you an overview of “What is Content Marketing?”, How Content Marketing relates to other Marketing efforts such as Social Media, SEO and Advertising and Optimizing for your Content Marketing Strategy.

It takes some of the best elements of free roaming, third person action, role playing and a story so rich and compelling that you may learn more about American history in the first 3 hours of gameplay then you’ve learned in your entire academic career.

Yes, the whole Templar story is a blend of straight up fiction and conspiracy theory, but the engagement really hammers in the atmosphere and the tension which led to the Revolutionary War. I could go on and on, but you are here for an Assassin’s Creed 3 Walkthrough:

Mark Cuban, Owner of the Dallas Mavericks NBA Franchise, Investor, Tech Enthusiast and television’s ‘Shark Tank’ star is making headlines for literally trashing an Officially licensed NBA Brand product called ‘Power Balance’ Bracelets.

“Balance bracelets were a scam when I drilled them on shark tank and they still are a scam. No chance I let them I our locker room.” Mark Cuban posted on his Official YouTube page.

In the video (See at the top of this page) Mark is seen discovering the Point of sale display in the Mavericks locker room , throwing a bit of verbal abuse at the NBA and at the products he calls “a scam” and chucking the display and products in a trash can. Mark insists he has already “drilled” the products on his show and has banned them from his team’s locker room.

On ‘Shark Tank’ Mark considered similar types of products nothing more than praying upon wishful thinking and classic placebo effect.

“See this stuff?” “It was a scam when they were on ‘Shark Tank, and it’s still a scam. I don’t care if the NBA was dumb enough to sign an agreement, this is going where it belongs.”

At that point, Cuban put the display case in a trash can.

“But have no fear, we do recycle.” Mark says while dumping the products in the trash.”What are you thinking, NBA?”

Power Balance LLC has already been involved in a $57 million false advertisement settlement in late 2011.

The bracelets are rubber like a typical “LiveStrong” bracelet and carry a hologram that is supposedly based on Eastern principles of wellness and to bring balance to the wearer. The top markets such as Los Angeles & New York branded Power Balance Bracelets are available now and eventually all 30 NBA teams will have a licensed version with their team logo on it and retail for $32.99 on the NBA’s Official site.

Pinterest is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing Social Networks around. Many marketers have wondered how and why they should take advantage of Pinterest for their Marketing.

The folks at Pinterest have given the green light to Businesses and Brands to start their Pinterest “Push” with the announcement of Pinterest Business accounts.

Setting Up Your Pinterest Business Account / Page

You can either create or convert your existing Pinterest account or create a new one by going to Business.Pinterest.com

You will be able to categorize your Business by the following categories:

Professional

Public Figure

Media

Brand

Retailer

Online Marketplace

Local Business

Institution / Non-Profit

Other

We have a great 1 minute video on how to convert your existing personal Pinterest account to a Business account below:

Benefits Of A Pinterest Business Account / Page

So why should you create or convert your existing Pinterest page? Well, you don’t need to right away, but it appears Pinterest will be making a larger commitment to brands in the future. For now, if your personal page is effective and you see no advantage to it, then stick with what you have. There are still a number of ways to maximize the effectiveness of your existing personal Pinterest account.

Maybe from an SEO standpoint, it is possible that there will be some benefit for categorization soon but on the surface and at the moment, a Pinterest Business and Personal page is nearly identical.

In the future, however, you could see many differences between categories, especially when it comes to Local businesses which could include features such as interactive maps and easy contact access similarly to Facebook Local Pages.

Bank of America is launching a New way of taking Mobile payments via a Smartphone dongle you attach, similar to Square payments.

“Presenting Mobile Pay on Demand. Pay-as-you-go convenience with a free,
secure card reader and access to funds as soon as the next business day”

You simply plug the dongle into you phone turning it into a mobile payment terminal. In combination with a Mobile App, the card is swiped, payment is received via the Merchant account and receipt is e-mailed to the customer.

It is true that this isn’t much different from Square’s offering and many people may be rolling their eyes as the big corporation co-opts other’s innovations, this could lead to a major turning point in the way we do commerce. Millions of existing Bank of America business customers will be able to easily add the service in conjunction with their existing merchant accounts.

I actually believe this period is merely a transition to more innovative solutions such as NFC (Near field communication), which allows phones to communicate with terminals instantaneously. NFC is already being built into many Android phones and people are eagerly awaiting Apple’s adoption in a future iPhone update.

Mobile Pay On Demand will be available starting December 3rd 2012 and payments will be swiped at a 2.70% Swiped rate for Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

Have you ever wanted to Clear, Remove, Delete or Obliterate your YouTube history? Maybe someone else used your computer or YouTube account and now you are seeing annoying content under Recommended videos or under your History. This video will quickly show you how to clear and even pause your history as well as how to remove the recommended videos on the right hand column of the YouTube Home Page.

You are simply going to login in to YouTube and click your username in the upper right hand corner of the YouTube Home page, then a History tile should show up.

Next, go up to the History tile on the top of your YouTube Home page and click through to Pause and Clear your History.

If you find that the History tile up at the top is missing then you probably already have your viewing History paused. If this is the case you need to look for the ‘History’ Link next your Channel or Profile Icon on the left hand side of the YouTube Home page then click ‘Watch History’ to get to the History management section.

There is also a “Recommend No More” Google Chrome Browser Exstension so you never have to deal with it again:
