How to Move Your Readers Away from Google Friend Connect

By now, you probably know that Google is doing away with Google Friend Connect (GFC) for non-Blogger blogs. The shutdown happens on March 1, 2012 so there’s not much more time to get your readers switched to something else.

Currently when someone subscribes to GFC, your RSS feed shows up in their Google Reader. However since Google hasn’t confirmed or denied that your feed will stay there when GFC goes the way of the dodo, it’s a good idea to start moving people away from GFC.

So what’s a girl to do?

Well, I have a three-step solution for ya (with an optional fourth if ya wanna go there).

Of course, you can wean people off of GFC however you want. This is just a suggestion. But I would say to start now if you haven’t already!

1. Determine Your Alternative.

Subscribing to an RSS feed is the closest thing to subscribing via Google Friend Connect so that’s probably the main place you want to direct people. Blogs you subscribed to showed up in Google Reader, just like subscribing to a plain ole RSS does.

Yes, yes, I know Google wants you to redirect people to your Google + page (if you have one) but that’s just not the same to me. How many people are using Google + vs using an RSS Reader? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

You may decide you’d prefer to direct people to Google + anyway. Or your Facebook page. That’s cool too. Whatever floats your boat. You can even give people a couple of choices if you want. Just don’t overwhelm them with a list of six ways to subscribe.

If you go the route of RSS, for the love of God make sure your feed is burned so it’s easier for people to subscribe! For an overview of Feedburner, you can read Gigi from Kludgy Mom’s Feedburner tutorial. To burn your feed with Feedburner, this is a good tutorial on how to burn your feed.

For Blogger bloggers: While you’re still able to have Google Friend Connect, just remember that Google can get rid of it at any time. In fact, they really haven’t updated it in a few years so I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull the plug at some point. While you may not want to remove the GFC widget, I’d focus on building your RSS feed subscribers, Facebook fans and email list (if you have one).

2. Now Make that Bad Boy Obvious.

Okay, so you’ve got your RSS feed in tip-top shape (or whatever else you want to direct people to), make it obvious to subscribe! What does that mean?

For starters, the way to subscribe should be ABOVE the fold. (that’s the part of the website you can see without scrolling down). Keep those social media buttons towards the top of your page too in your sidebar or your header.

If you’re on WordPress.org, I like the plugins What Would Seth Godin Do or WP Greet Box. It lets you customize a message to go either at the top or bottom of your posts. Use it to tell people GFC is going away and ask them to subscribe another way. You could even use Hello Bar, which I love to use for special occasions. The point is… make that way to subscribe stand out!

3. Remove Google Friend Connect now.

Yes, I know that you probably want to keep your Google Friend Connect widget up as long as possible. But just remember that not everyone probably knows about GFC going away.

What if someone comes to your site and only follows you that way? Then you’ll just have to convert them later so why make them subscribe twice. Once you have everything from Step 1 in place, let people know you’ll be taking Google Friend Connect down and ditch it. Your current GFC subscribers will still receive your latest posts until Google officially pulls the plug (there’s still debate as to what happens AFTER they pull the plug).

Optional: Send a newsletter message (but only once maybe twice)

Personally, I never liked the idea of using Google Friend Connect to send out newsletters. As a marketer, I take permission marketing pretty seriously and I never felt like GFC made it obvious to someone that they were opting into a newsletter when they subscribed to your blog.

That being said, since you have the capability to send a newsletter out with GFC (while not obvious, a reader technically opts-in), I don’t see the harm in using the newsletter feature a couple of times to let subscribers know they need to subscribe to you another way. Perhaps one message right away and then one a few days before GFC shuts down. Most people who read your blog will appreciate the reminder.

If you did have a newsletter you sent out through GFC, then switch over to using an Email Service Provider like Mailchimp. It’s free for up to 2,000 subscribers! Just know that there’s no way to export your list.

Alrighty, so that’s just one workflow for moving people away from Google Friend Connect. I’d love to hear what you’re doing!

Will the FBI shut down the Internet on March 8 because of computer virus concerns?

The Internet could go dark for millions of users as early as March 8 because of a virus that has corrupted computers in more than 100 countries.

The computer script, called DNSChanger Trojan, taps into fraudulent servers, sending users of the Web to unintended - and sometimes illegal - sites.

Though the FBI has shut down the DNSChanger network and put up surrogate servers, they warned the solution was only temporary - and the court-ordered deadline is March 8.

Infected: The Trojan 'DNSChanger' could cause millions - including Fortune 500 companies - to lose their Internet if the FBI shuts down surrogate servers

Court order: The FBI has been ordered to retire their surrogate servers by March 8

According to RT Network, servers function by translating traditional website URLs to their ‘numeric counterpart.’

But computers with the Trojan, which originally emerged in Estonia, will send users to fraudulent websites.

And, if the FBI shuts off their emergency servers, millions of people could potentially be without Internet.

How to make a prank shutdown virus

Ever wonder what new prank you could come up with to make your little sister go crazy? Here's a simple, yet very effective one. Just switch one of your desktop icons (i.e. Internet Explorer) with a fake one and a warning box will pop-up which will shut down your computer within 30 seconds. Isn't that enough to make lil' sister yell when she sees her Barbie doll game go bye-bye? Here's how it works:

This isn't really a virus ... its simply a shutdown program which will make your friends freak out.

First, you will need to create a shortcut. You can create a shortcut by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting New, and then, Shortcut.

A Create Shortcut box should then open. In that box, write the following:

shutdown -s -t 30 -c "VIRUS DETECTED!!"

(note: the number 30 can be replaced by any other number. That number corresponds to the number of seconds before the computer will shutdown. Here I have chosen 30 in order to have enough time to close it before my computer shuts down. Also, the message between quotes can be replaced by something like "YOU HAVE BEEN INFECTED BY A TROJAN VIRUS" or some other great idea. However, the message must be between quotes.)

After, simply click on Next and a box with the name Shutdown will appear. Change the name that you want for it. In this case I have chosen Internet Explorer but it can always be renamed how you prefer.

After naming it, click on Finish and ... here's your shutdown virus!!!! Not very convincing he? Well, in that case let's change our icon!

Right-click on your shutdown Internet Explorer icon (or whichever name you gave it) and select Properties.

Select Change Icon

(Note: A box saying "system 32 does not have any icons choose from a diffrent list" or something like that may pop-up; if it does simply click on Ok)

Now... it depends on what you have named your shutdown virus ... If you chose Internet Explorer scroll all the way to the right and you will find the icon. If you did not choose Internet Explorer feel free to choose a different icon... Remember it has to be something that people will click on.

Now Heres our Icon ... Now it looks like something that people will click on.

To close the program, select the start menu and click on Run...

Write: Shutdown -a

and the program should shutdown immediately.

(Note: To shut it, you can also do a new shortcut but instead of writing shutdown -s -t 30 -c "VIRUS DETECTED" write this: shutdown -a

and call it Shutdown abort..So instead of closing it with Run you can just click on your shutdown abort shortcut.)

Have fun freaking out your friends/family ... And dont forget to close it or put a longer time frame so that you will have enough time to close it.

WARNING: This program will really shutdown your computer. It may be fun to do it to little sisters or friends but refrain from using it if someone is actually working on the computer, since they will lose all their information.

For example, to use cadvise for a single file, you can simply use the following command:

Hacker adalah orang yang mempelajari, menganalisa, memodifikasi, menerobos masuk ke dalam komputer dan jaringan komputer, baik untuk keuntungan atau dimotivasi oleh tantangan. Kata bahasa Inggris "hacker" pertama kalinya muncul dengan arti positif untuk menyebut seorang anggota yang memiliki keahlian dalam bidang komputer dan mampu membuat program komputer yang lebih baik daripada yang telah dirancang bersama.

Pada tahun 1983 untuk pertama kalinya FBI menangkap kelompok kriminal komputer The 414s yang berbasis di Milwaukee, Amerika Serikat. Kelompok yang kemudian disebut hacker tersebut dinyatakan bersalah atas pembobolan 60 buah komputer, dari komputer milik Pusat Kanker Memorial Sloan-Kettering hingga komputer milik Laboratorium Nasional Los Alamos. Satu dari pelaku tersebut mendapatkan kekebalan karena testimonialnya, sedangkan 5 pelaku lainnya mendapatkan hukuman masa percobaan.

1. Jonathan James

James adalah orang Amerika, saat baru umur 16 taun dia dikirim ke penjara karena kelakuannya di dunia maya. Situs departemen pertahanan Amerika dibobol olehnya dan dia cuma bilang itu tantangan bagi dia dan merupakan suatu kesenangan tersendiri. NASA juga terkena dampak keisengan dia, James mencuri software NASA yang diperkirakan seharga $1.7 juta dollar AS. Sehingga NASA dipaksa untuk mematikan server dan sistemnya. Karena kelakuannya, dia juga tidak boleh menyentuh komputer selama 10 tahun. Tapi sekarang dia sudah di jalan yang benar dan bikin sebuah perusahaan keamanan di bidang komputer.

2. Adrian Lamo

Adrian Lamo atau yang dijuluki ‘hacker tak punya rumah’, biasanya menggunakan coffee shop, perpustakaan, dan café Internet sebagai basisnya untuk menjalankan aksinya. Dia membobol New York Times untuk mendapatkan info personal dan beberapa security number dan membobol Microsoft. Dia akhirnya didenda $65.000 dollar US. Saat ini dia jadi pembicara di beberapa acara seminar.

3. Kevin Mitnick

Mungkin Mitnick menjadi hakcer paling terkenal dari generasinya, karena Mitnick telah ‘dinobatkan‘ oleh Departemen Kehakiman US menjadi criminal computer paling diinginkan di sepanjang sejarah Amerika. Dia dilacak dan ditangkap oleh FBI dengan bantuan Tsutomu Shimomura yang melacak (tracking) lewat jaringan HP’ yang dibawa ama Mitnick saat itu. Tapi sekarang dia sudah tobat dan menjadi seorang penulis buku, konsultan security, dan pembicara.

4. Kevin Poulsen

Poulson pertama kali masuk ke dunia hacking melalui line telepon di stasiun radio KIIS-FM di kota Los Angeles, dan yang membuat Poulson terkenal ketika melakukan penipuan digital dengan mengaku menjadi penelepon yang menjebol line telepon ke-102 hanya untuk mendapatkan uang untuk membeli Porsche. Kevin Poulson atau nama aliasnya Dark Dante,berhasil mengaktifkan kembali Yellow Page, kemudian menggunakan nomor telepon di dalamnya untuk menjalankan agen pengawal secara virtual. Pihak kepolisian kemudian menangkap Poulson dan memenjarakannya selama 3 tahun setelah ia meng-hack database investigasi federal, dan juga semua 1,800 line telepon yang dibuatnya mengalami crash. Setelah ia keluar dari penjara ia kini menjadi journalis.

5. Robert Tappan Moris

Morris merupakan anak dari ilmuwan National Computer Security Center yang merupakan bagian dari National Security Agencies (NSA). Ia menjadi hacker ternama setelah ia berhasil menginfeksi ribuan komputer yang terhubung dalam jaringan. Ia kemudian menulis Worm Internet yang populer di tahun 1988.
November 1988, sebuah virus computer berhasil ditemukan oleh Cornell University, menginfeksi sekitar 6,000 mesin Unix, dan menimbulkan kerugian jutaan dollar. Pembuat virus tersebut diketahui bernama Robert Tappan Morris. Morris mengatakan bahwa virus ‘worm’-nya tidak ditujukan untuk merusak apapun, namun bagaimanapun ia harus menjalani hukuman penjara 3 tahun. Sementara disc yang mengandung source code worm Morris kini disimpan di Boston Museum of Science.

Tinggal isi data data di akun gmail yang akan dibuat seperti nama, tempat tanggal lahir , password dan lain-lain.

Biasanya dalam membuat email di GMAIL kita perlu verifikasi lewat nomor handphone jadi usahakan masukan nomor handphone yang bisa dikirimin sms dari Google untuk verifikasi.

Setelah email di Gmail dibuat baru kita bisa melanjutkan ke step 2 membuat blog.

2. Daftar di Blogger.com

Setelah membuat email di GMAIL sekarang saatnya daftar di www.Blogger.com

email : email GMAIL yang kita buat tadi di tahap 1
Password : pilihlah password minimal 8 karakter
Display Name (nama tampilan) : Merupakan nama yang digunakan sebagai nama kita di akun blog nanti. Misal aku memilih nama "ayead gaptek" maka nama yang akan muncul ketika aku posting nanti ialah "posted by ayead gaptek atau diposting oleh ayead gaptek"
Gender (Jenis Kelamin) : pilih kelamin sesuai kenyataan atau kalau ragu pilih "other atau lainnya"
Birthday (tanggal lahir) : masukan dengan format tanggal/bulan/tahun misal jika tanggal lahir 17 agustus 1945 maka yang dimasukkan = 17/08/1945 jika dalam format bahasa inggris seperti gambar dibawah maka format tanggalnya ialah bulan/tanggal/tahun
Word Verification (verifikasi) : masukan karakter yang terdapat di bawah
Lalu centang Acceptance of terms (penerimaan peryaratan)
Klik Continue / Lanjutkan

3. Membuat Blog | Cara Bikin Blog

Sampai proses diatas sobat sudah selesai cara membuat akun Blogger, sekarang saatnya membuat BLOGnya.

Di akun blogger klik "Blog baru" untuk membuat blog. Lalu akan muncul halaman untuk memilih Judul, Alamat Blog dan Template.

Judul digunakan sebagai penama blog, misal untuk blog ini dulu kuberi judul Blognya Ayead Tergaptek

Saran Gaptek : dalam memilih judul dan nama blog jangan pilih yang aneh atau susah dieja maupun menggunakan simbol yang aneh-aneh. Pilih yang mudah diingat orang lain dan tidak membingungkan.

Memilih Template Blog

Ada berbagai template bawaan dari blogger yang tersedia sobat bisa memilih terserah sesuai dengan yang disuka lalu klik 'Buat Blog'

Saran Gaptek : Dalam memilih template blog awal, aku lebih suka dengan template 'AWESOME' karena lebih terlihat simpel tanpa banyak background gambar. Template yang namanya 'Simple' justru sebenarnya tidak simpel seperti namanya karena menggunakan background dalam bentuk gambar sehingga berat untuk dibuka.

4. Blog Sudah Jadi

Selamat ! sampai disini blog sudah berhasil dibuat, namun masih kosong. Setelah ini akan ada beberapa hal yang perlu di setting sebelum melakukan posting.

Sejarah tentang Hack, Hacker, dan Hacking

Sebelum terbentuknya komunikasi yang tercipta di Internet, pada tahun 1960-an beberapa mahasiswa ilmu komputer di Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) yang gemar untuk melakukan engineering dan re-engineering terhadap perangkat keras dan perangkat lunak sering melakukan diskusi-diskusi terbuka yang disana membahas masalah :

Ide-ide mengenai pengembangan perangkat keras dan perangkat lunak
Ide-ide mengenai transformasi terhadap teknologi dan informasi

Pengistilahan dan perkataan “Hack” sebenarnya adalah merupakan slang yang pada saat itu belum memiliki arti yang spesifik dan sebenarnya. Kebiasaan-kebiasaan mengucapkan “I Hack This Stuff” seakan-akan memberikan arti bahwa istilah Hack merupakan kegiatan yang sedang dan memperoleh hasil setelah melakukan pengembangan terhadap segala sesuatu yang dilakukan. Pengembangan-pengembangan yang secara khusus diberikan kepada minicomputer dan microcomputer tersebutlah istilah “Computer Hacker” terbentuk.

Dengan kata lain, Computer Hacker adalah seseorang yang mengaplikasikan kemampuan dalam cakupannya mengenai komputer software, komputer hardware, komputer arsitektur, komputer desain, serta administrasi yang terkandung didalamnya. Seorang Hacker dituntut memiliki kemampuan dalam hal pemrograman untuk tingkatan software, dan keahlian dibidang hardware. Tuntutan yang sedemikian luasnya untuk keamanan disisi sistem aplikasi dan jaringan, memberikan motivasi bagi seorang Hacker untuk mengembangkan keahlian tersebut sehingga hasil dari penelitian yang dilakukan akan memberikan dampak yang positif bagi kelangsungan IT itu sendiri.

Dengan melihat sekelumit penjelasan diatas, kita dapat memberikan kesimpulan bahwa Hacking bukanlah sebatas pada kegiatan illegal yang identik dengan pengrusakan sebuah sistem dan aplikasi, atau sebatas kegiatan-kegiatan tentang pencurian sebuah data-data penting, melainkan kepada tindakan untuk melakukan perubahan yang mendasar atau perbaikan-perbaikan terhadap sistem dan aplikasi, baik yang berupa software ataupun hardware.

KELOMPOK HACKER BERDASARKAN MOTIF

Black Hat Para hacker yang menjelma menjadi cracker / attacker yang menggunakan kemampuannya untuk tujuan kriminal dan cenderung membahayakan kepentingan pihak lain. Pada umumnya orang-orang yang tergabung dalam kelompok ini adalah yang bergerak secara individu atau sesuai idealisme tertentu dan tidak terikat atas kepentingan pihak tertentu.
Grey Hat Para hacker yang memberikan informasi yang diperoleh ke para attacker maupun para vendor, untuk memperoleh imbalan tertentu. Kelompok ini dikenal juga sebagai cracker, yakni orang-orang yang tidak memiliki keberpihakan pada pihak manapun dan menjual berbagai informasi yang diperlukan sesuai kebutuhan yang ada.
White Hat (hacker sejati) Orang-orang yang melakukan aktivitas hacking dalam rangka memperoleh informasi tentang celah-celah keamanan, maupun kelemahan-kelemahan yang dimiliki untuk diberikan kembali kepada pihak yang bersangkutan untuk disempurnakan kembali.
Blue Hat yang punya kemampuan seperti white hat, tapi berkecimpung di dunia pendidikan.

TUJUH KELOMPOK HACKER BERDASARKAN PROFILE KEMAMPUAN

Pembagian para hacker berdasarkan profile kemampuan profesionalnya terbagi menjadi tujuh kelompok. Hal ini sebagaimana dijelaskan oleh Marc Rogers MA, seorang guru besar psikologi dari University of Manitoba Hawai, yakni:

Tool Kids/NewBies Orang-orang yang baru belajar aktivitas hacking, namun kemampuan kemampuan tentang komputer serta teknik pemrograman relatif terbatas dan hanya baru bisa membuat program-program dasar. Aktivitas hacking yang dilakukan, umumnya menggunakan bantuan aplikasi yang terdapat di internet hingga tidak murni mengandalkan kemampuan individunya.
Cyber Punk Orang-orang yang memiliki pengetahuan dan teknik komputer yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan NewBies. Mereka sudah mampu memahami karakteristik dari sistem jaringan ataupun sistem yang sedang mereka serang. Pengetahuan mereka tentang bahasa pemrograman cukup andal, karena mampu mendefinisikan hingga karakteristik umumnya. Dengan kemampuannya ini, ia sudah mampu menciptakan alat bantu infiltrasi sendiri, hingga tidak lagi menggunakan program-program bantu yang tersedia di internet. Aktivitas-aktivitas yang dilakukan memiliki kecenderungan untuk kriminal, seperti defacing web, carding, ataupun spamming.
Internals Orang-orang yang masih bergabung ataupun pernah (mantan) dengan perusahaan TI, dengan kemampuan komputer dan programming yang anda. Dan melakukan berbagai aktivitas hacking dengan mengandalkan berbagai kombinasi sumber daya internal maupun eksternal yang ada untuk berbagai tujuan. Contoh, pelanggaran paling sering dilakukan adalah breaking over priviledge activity, yakni segala aktivitas yang melanggar batasan-batasan hak yang dimiliki.
Coders Golongan ini dikenal juga sebagai resources, yakni orang-orang yang menjual berbagai informasi yang ada di internet ke pihak-pihak yang membutuhkan. Kemampuan programming dan teknisnya sangat andal dan kelompok ini malakukan berbagai aktivitas infiltrasi dalam rangka untuk memperoleh berbagai data ataupun informasi yang dapat dijual. Coders juga membantu membuat berbagai aplikasi bantu hacking yang dibutuhkan oleh para hacker ataupun attacker/cracker yang membutuhkan.
Old Guard Hackers (Idealism Gate Keepers) Para hacker sejati yang murni melakukan aktivitas-kativitas hacking dalam rangka untuk tujuan ilmiah dan kebaikan semua pihak. Jumlah golongan ini relatif sangat sedikit, karena idealisme yang dijunjung memaksa mereka untuk menggunakan kode etik yang dijunjung tinggi oleh para hacker, yakni kemampuan di atas segalanya.

4 Hacker Software Tools Every Budding Coder Should Have

If you’re a computer geek, chances are you like fiddling around with things. You are, in short, a hacker. Although most hackers probably use Linux, there are some that use Windows. Maybe your business requires you to use Windows. This post covers some essential hacking and coding tools for all you Windows hackers. Why should the Linux crowd get all the fun, right?
Before we begin, what is a hacker? Well, Wikipedia defines a hacker as “a person who heavily modifies the software or hardware of their own computer system” while Google defines a hacker as “an enthusiastic and skillful computer programmer or user“. I bet most of you here fit that second description at least.

jEdit

This is less known than Notepad++. It supports many advanced features, such as syntax highlighting, which is a must if you’re a programmer. It also has features such as a built-in macro language, which allows it to be incredibly extensible. It’s written in Java, which allows it to be cross-platform.
As a programmer, you are constantly removing code to optimize your program, to fix bugs or any number of other reasons. Sometimes, you may need it back. The so called “Kill Ring” stores deleted text, so you never have to worry.
It supports 130 languages, including AppleScript and Objective-C, which surprised me. So even as a stranded Mac developer, it’s worth a go. It comes with a nice amount of documentation that’s easy to understand, so if you’re ever stuck, don’t worry. It’s a powerful text editor that no Windows programmer should go without.

FireBug

FireBug is the number one free web development tool for Firefox which allows live inspecting and editing of webpages. It is is a powerful tool for testing your websites and fixing problems without having to reload the page all the time. Similar to Safari’s built-in ‘Element Inspector’ but for Firefox. Safari is not extensible enough for a web developer, though that may change with Safari 5. For now though, Firefox is the way to go for web development and FireBug makes it even better.
One use for FireBug is downloading page elements, such as Flash games.

Jorge covered how to install Firebug on other browsers than Firefox back in 2009, and James also covered it in his recent CSS tutorial.

AutoHotKey

This is like TextExpander for Windows, although it goes much further than that. It’s a macro utility which runs in the background and intercepts any key or mouse presses you have ordered it to. It is easily script-able and allows you to do many things, from reversing your scrolling, to auto-correcting text, to the aforementioned text substitution.
I can have it set to substitute “@habib” with “habib@makeuseof.com“. I can set it to do it after the space, or immediately. My choice. That’s the beauty of it: everything can be tweaked. Here’s one line of code that replaces @habib with my email:

:*:@habib::habib@makeuseof.com

The block of text can be as long as I want. I can have pre-written email responses. For the budding coder, you can set it so that +ifelse writes out an if, else statement for you. Then just enter the condition, statements, and other elements. It’s obvious how this can speed up development substantially. In fact, with AutoHotKey, you can optimize a machine for any task, from development to gaming. If the game doesn’t allow you to choose the controls, just fire up the associated AutoHotKey script.

VirtualBox

This is a no-brainer for web developers, especially if you run a geeky-type website, where a lot of visitors use Linux. Mac OS X can be installed, albeit without support and you’d be breaking the license, which is illegal.

Some of you may be asking why not just install Linux here and dual-boot, or even replace Windows and have all these tools available out of the box, or with a better alternative? Well, some people are required to run Windows and may not want to keep VirtualBox running all the time, while dual-booting would be a pain in the ass. These tools allow you to have some of the power and extensibility of Linux without having to give up your job, dual-booting or keeping 2 whole OS’s running. VirtualBox allows you to test your websites with other OS’s, or develop for Linux in your spare time. If you are trying to port an application, virtualization is a lifesaver.

I think everyone has heard of this one, recently evolved into the 4.x series.
Nmap (Network Mapper) is a free open source utility for network exploration
or security auditing. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, although
it works fine against single hosts. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to
determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (application
name and version) those hosts are offering, what operating systems (and OS
versions) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use,
and dozens of other characteristics. Nmap runs on most types of computers and
both console and graphical versions are available. Nmap is free and open source.
Can be used by beginners (-sT) or by pros alike (packet_trace). A very
versatile tool, once you fully understand the results.

server framework.

3. John the Ripper
Yes, JTR 1.7 was recently released!
John the Ripper is a fast password cracker, currently available for many
flavors of Unix (11 are officially supported, not counting different
architectures), DOS, Win32, BeOS, and OpenVMS. Its primary purpose is to detect
weak Unix passwords. Besides several crypt(3) password hash types most commonly
found on various Unix flavors, supported out of the box are Kerberos AFS and
Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 LM hashes, plus several more with contributed patches.

4. Nikto
Nikto is an Open Source (GPL) web server scanner which performs comprehensive
tests against web servers for multiple items, including over 3200 potentially
dangerous files/CGIs, versions on over 625 servers, and version specific
problems on over 230 servers. Scan items and plugins are frequently updated and
can be automatically updated (if desired).
Nikto is a good CGI scanner, there are some other tools that go well with Nikto
(focus on http fingerprinting or Google hacking/info gathering etc, another
article for just those).

5. SuperScan
Powerful TCP port scanner, pinger, resolver. SuperScan 4 is an update of the
highly popular Windows port scanning tool, SuperScan.

6. p0f
P0f v2 is a versatile passive OS fingerprinting tool. P0f can identify the
operating system on:
- machines that connect to your box (SYN mode),
- machines you connect to (SYN+ACK mode),
- machine you cannot connect to (RST+ mode),
- machines whose communications you can observe.
Basically it can fingerprint anything, just by listening, it doesn’t make ANY
active connections to the target machine.

7. Wireshark (Formely Ethereal)
Wireshark is a GTK+-based network protocol analyzer, or sniffer, that lets you
capture and interactively browse the contents of network frames. The goal of
the project is to create a commercial-quality analyzer for Unix and to give
Wireshark features that are missing from closed-source sniffers.
Works great on both Linux and Windows (with a GUI), easy to use and can
reconstruct TCP/IP Streams! Will do a tutorial on Wireshark later.

8. Yersinia
Yersinia is a network tool designed to take advantage of some weakeness in
different Layer 2 protocols. It pretends to be a solid framework for analyzing
and testing the deployed networks and systems. Currently, the following network
protocols are implemented: Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Cisco Discovery
Protocol (CDP), Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP), Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol (DHCP), Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), IEEE 802.1q, Inter-Switch
Link Protocol (ISL), VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP).

9. Eraser
Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to
completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several
times with carefully selected patterns. Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT,
2000, XP and DOS. Eraser is Free software and its source code is released under
GNU General Public License.
An excellent tool for keeping your data really safe, if you’ve deleted it..make
sure it’s really gone, you don’t want it hanging around to bite you in the ass.

11. LCP
Main purpose of LCP program is user account passwords auditing and recovery in
Windows NT/2000/XP/2003. Accounts information import, Passwords recovery, Brute
force session distribution, Hashes computing.

12. Cain and Abel
My personal favourite for password cracking of any kind.
Cain & Abel is a password recovery tool for Microsoft Operating Systems. It
allows easy recovery of various kind of passwords by sniffing the network,
cracking encrypted passwords using Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis
attacks, recording VoIP conversations, decoding scrambled passwords, revealing
password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols.
The program does not exploit any software vulnerabilities or bugs that could
not be fixed with little effort.

13. Kismet
Kismet is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion
detection system. Kismet will work with any wireless card which supports raw
monitoring (rfmon) mode, and can sniff 802.11b, 802.11a, and 802.11g traffic.
A good wireless tool as long as your card supports rfmon (look for an orinocco
gold).

14. NetStumbler
Yes a decent wireless tool for Windows! Sadly not as powerful as it’s Linux
counterparts, but it’s easy to use and has a nice interface, good for the
basics of war-driving.
NetStumbler is a tool for Windows that allows you to detect Wireless Local Area
Networks (WLANs) using 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g. It has many uses:
Verify that your network is set up the way you intended.
Find locations with poor coverage in your WLAN.
Detect other networks that may be causing interference on your network.
Detect unauthorized rogue access points in your workplace.
Help aim directional antennas for long-haul WLAN links.
Use it recreationally for WarDriving.

15. hping
To finish off, something a little more advanced if you want to test your TCP/IP
packet monkey skills.
hping is a command-line oriented TCP/IP packet assembler/analyzer. The
interface is inspired to the ping unix command, but hping isn’t only able to
send ICMP echo requests. It supports TCP, UDP, ICMP and RAW-IP protocols, has a
traceroute mode, the ability to send files between a covered channel, and many
other features.

This isn't really a virus ... its simply a shutdown program which will make your friends freak out.

First, you will need to create a shortcut. You can create a shortcut by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting New, and then, Shortcut.

A Create Shortcut box should then open. In that box, write the following:

shutdown -s -t 30 -c "VIRUS DETECTED!!"

After, simply click on Next and a box with the name Shutdown will appear. Change the name that you want for it. In this case I have chosen Internet Explorer but it can always be renamed how you prefer.

After naming it, click on Finish and ... here's your shutdown virus!!!! Not very convincing he? Well, in that case let's change our icon!

Right-click on your shutdown Internet Explorer icon (or whichever name you gave it) and select Properties.

Select Change Icon

(Note: A box saying "system 32 does not have any icons choose from a diffrent list" or something like that may pop-up; if it does simply click on Ok)

Now... it depends on what you have named your shutdown virus ... If you chose Internet Explorer scroll all the way to the right and you will find the icon. If you did not choose Internet Explorer feel free to choose a different icon... Remember it has to be something that people will click on.

Now Heres our Icon ... Now it looks like something that people will click on.

To close the program, select the start menu and click on Run...

Write: Shutdown -a

and the program should shutdown immediately.

(Note: To shut it, you can also do a new shortcut but instead of writing shutdown -s -t 30 -c "VIRUS DETECTED" write this: shutdown -a

and call it Shutdown abort..So instead of closing it with Run you can just click on your shutdown abort shortcut.)

Have fun freaking out your friends/family ... And dont forget to close it or put a longer time frame so that you will have enough time to close it.

WARNING: This program will really shutdown your computer. It may be fun to do it to little sisters or friends but refrain from using it if someone is actually working on the computer, since they will lose all their information.
