With two weeks to go until the release of their second album Story’s Start or End on 9 August and following on from their recent triple j Like A Version, today SAFIA drop the next taste of the album in single ‘Runaway’.


‘Runaway’ builds on the expansive previous single 'Resolution' with a thumping drum groove and textured layers carefully crafted the way SAFIA do best. Once again self-produced by the band, ‘Runaway’ celebrates the world (and universe) around us and compels us to live in the moment.

Before they embark on their AUS/NZ album tour next month, the band will be hosting two exclusive Story’s Start or End album listening parties at secret locations in Sydney and Canberra, where they’ll also unveil a special collaboration they’ve been working on (more to be revealed shortly). Entry to the parties is via pre-order of the album (strictly limited capacity).*

The band continues their collaboration with ground-breaking designer SUTU, with the ‘Runaway' and Story’s Start or End album artwork coming to life with AR technology when viewed through the Eyejack app. 

Written and produced by the band over the past 2.5 years in their hometown Canberra, the album will include previous singles ‘Resolution’, ‘Think We’re Not Alone’, ‘Starlight’ and ‘Cellophane Rainbow’. Story’s Start or End will showcase the Australian three-piece’s bold vision and fine attention to detail, with intricate production and adventurous arrangements underpinning thoughtful musings on identity, growth, and understanding. As a band they are known for forging entire sonic landscapes with rich, cinematic detail and Story’s Start or End will continue that not only sonically but also visually through their live shows.

Australia’s self-made indie sensation Ziggy Alberts, has blessed fans with a surprise EP, the sixth in his extensive discography. This comes after his recent announcement of a national Australian tour, to begin in November 2019, which is already close to selling out. An extra show has already been added in Adelaide after the first sold out in under an hour.

“A Postcard From An Australian Summer” is a collection of live performances from Ziggy’s last Australian leg on his Laps Around The Sun World Tour, which has seen him headline rooms of all shapes and sizes across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe and North America so far.

To release something that's specifically for my fans who are coming to shows, and have been, over the last 5 years of touring. A mix of old and new songs, that were recorded on my last regional tour around Australia, the summer of 18/19.

WITH NEW TRACK “WAKE UP” 

Wagons have followed up their triumphant return earlier this year, “Keep On Coming Back” with an equally catchy new masterpiece “Wake Up”. After an almost five-year gap for the band, they prove their ability to meld the worlds of Americana and alt-pop, reviving their original sound with a modern flair which catapults them ahead of the competition.

 

“Wake Up”, with its jangled riff, sweeping strings and snare that cracks like a whip, could be the soundtrack to a spaghetti western set somewhere on the plateau of a parched, pink salt lake. 

 

“There is a unique thickness to the air when you wake up when everyone else is asleep,” says frontman Henry Wagons. “Ideas seem to bounce around faster...unhindered, like dominoes tumbling. Without any fences, thoughts can circle around, especially the anxious ones. Taking stock, in the blackness, and stubbornly reminding yourself everything is ok is the only way out, whether they are or not.”

 

WAGONS are gearing up to release their new album “Songs From the Aftermath” on August 9th, followed by an Australian tour throughout September. The first single from the album, “Keep On Coming Back” took listeners on a roadtrip through their most sentimental and heartfelt memories upon its release in June.

WAGONS stay atop their own tidal wave of hard-hitting, outlaw inspired, swamp rock madness, still pulsing and stomping together as a joint force, with singer Henry Wagons at the helm. Henry’s fierce intellect, once hurtling toward a career as a philosopher, was thankfully derailed by a record deal, a thirst for whisky and an insatiable need to make noise, as made evident by their music and lyrics. 

The group have been regularly compared to the cheekiest and most mischievous of musical outlaws, from Johnny Cash to Nick Cave and have circled the globe testing the fortitude of some of the biggest stages at Bonnaroo, Bluesfest, Laneway, as well as SXSW and Americana showcases.

Hot on the heels of his sophomore LP Everyday which was released in February this year, UK-based producer and composer Tourist has just unveiled his new single Bunny. 

The new track is the second single to be taken from his forthcoming album titled Wild, the second LP set for release this year. More details will be announced very soon.
 
Bunny  begins with a floating vocal line and a glistening arpeggio as a muscular beat builds around the track. 

“I find the process of writing to be an endlessly enjoyable pursuit.” says  Tourist (William Phillips) “My new resolve is to share as much music as possible with people. “Bunny” is a term of endearment for the woman I love, and also my new single.”

Channel Tres Show Review 19th July 2019

The Gershwin Room, The Esplanade Hotel, St Kilda, Melbourne 


I didn't know a lot about this Compton raised wonder, but after witnessing last nights show at The Espy i'm pretty sure Channel Tres will be hard to avoid in the future.

Deep house beats, smooth R&B vocals, camp disco edits and the most incredible dance moves made this show intoxicating.

Channel kept us waiting but eventually burst onto the stage in skinny jeans, t-shirt, fisherman beanie and a string of pearls.  Enigmatic is an understatement.  

The packed and steamy Gershwin Room was absolutely heaving and the loyal crowd knew every word to "Controller", "Jet Black" and "Sexy Black Timberlake".  His gravity defying dancers were earthy, athletic and really f**king hot. 

Channel treated us to some powerful poetry as well as a cheeky stage dive and one lucky punter snagged a very sweaty towel.  

I have no doubt his show at Splendour over the weekend will be totally epic and if you get the chance to see this guy in action, do what ever it takes to get a ticket.  

A packed out band room this year, next year, an arena show?  Who knows, but i can't wait to find out.

Also featuring Mallrat, the film clip premiered on V Magazine over night, and is an ode to iconic 2000's celebrities and the juxtaposition of wealth, obsession with fame, and invasion of privacy the rise of the internet brought with it.

"The 'Video' video is an ode to some of my favourite 2000s celebs who rose from an invasion of privacy and built entire empires out of it. I drew inspiration from these icons for both the concept and styling of the clip.
For me, Video represents a moment of taking back my power and believing in myself. It’s about celebrating my growth and all the good things that have come along with that; allowing myself to exist outside of other people’s expectations or judgement. I wanted the video to amplify that feeling of empowerment and strength in owning who you are.

It's always a good day when you wake up to a new Allday album. Released today is his third,  Starry Night Over The Phone.  


The album contains already released singles 'Wonder Drug', 'Protection', 'Lungs' and 'Restless' and will be followed by an 'Allday and Friends' set at Splendour and an extensive album tour around the country in venues such as the Hordern Pavilion and Festival Hall in August.


Although he has been based in LA for the past few years the album features a roll call of Australian talent having been executive produced by Simon Lam of Kllo, and track features include Japanese Wallpaper, Lonelyspeck and surprising collaborators The Veronica’s!


This album follow's 2017's  Speeding which earned  number 6 on the Aria Album chart and 2014's  Startup Cult  which got to number 3.

Overall this album has a sophistication of production we haven't seen from this artist before.  It seems like he's growing up and his music is much more structured and thematic.  It has the unmistakable feel of 90's LA R&B and pop but with a super unique Australian flair.

I love the minor feel to Allday's vocal. It's unapologetically somber in tone and comforting amongst the deep base lines and crunchy production.  

The album definitely has a building and deliberate flow. Starting with the upbeat collaboration with Veronicas, moving through the dark and rolling "Lungs" and ending with one of the songs of the year "Wonder Drug."  I can't wait to see this show live at Melbourne's Festival Hall in August.

Starry Night Over The Phone

"Restless ft. The Veronicas."   This is such a surprising collaboration but i'm absolutely fine with it.  The woodwind riff at the very beginning, the light high hats, the layered vocals, and the Veronicas!  It's such a nice track and the already released video clip is nothing short of 90's bliss.

"Don't Wanna Push You Away Anymore"  has the optimistic charm of a young romance and a trudging momentum that really brings the theme of the song home.  A clean and crisp production drives this song and leaves us suspended with the repeated lyric "i wanna stay with you tonight, don't wanna push you away."  Really cool work.

"Protection" has a classic grunge guitar riff at the start which makes you think the song is going to be something it's not. The fattest of beats drop in and Allday spits clipped lines of text.  This track has that 90's R&B feel, straight out of LA,  which makes total sense.

It wouldn't be an Allday album without his signature melancholy fusion of pop, hip hop, R&B and almost spoken word or beat poetry. "Atmosphere" is a dreamy combination of all of those.  Not happy, not sad but sitting comfortably between the two.                              

"See You When I See You ft. Lonelyspeck" has a pretty huge production with multi layer backing vocals and a deep base line.  The collaboration with Adelaide based producer and vocalist brings together the perfect blend of earnest pop and driven rap. 

"Lungs" is the hard hitting serious song of the album.  Fast and driven with a rolling beat and lyric.  This track is gangsta.

"Rhythms" is joyous  and soaring.  With so much production on Allday's vocal it's hard to break it down.  I know it's warped, distorted  and i love it.  A new crowd pleaser for sure.  This track  will go off live. 

"Hold On" has a sense of longing and this lyric sticks out to me "I say if not now when.  Took you for granted back then.  My Grandma used to say don't put off till tomorrow what you could do today".

The last track on the album is the already released "Wonder Drug".  Dreamy, sensitive and driven this track has already been firmly cemented in our hearts as one of the best songs of 2019.

It's safe to say this album is fantastic.  It's got great range and depth which is really refreshing for an artist sitting in the pocket of R&B and Pop.  

Allday is set to tour the country in August, supported by triple j.  We'll be at the Melbourne show so stay tuned for our coverage.

It's a great day when you wake up to news of a new Hein Cooper track and this one comes with an incredible cinematic video.  I've been following Coopers musical journey for years and this latest single "Invincible" is nothing short of wonderful.

Following the release of 2016’s acclaimed album "The Art of Escape", including 13 million Spotify streams of breakout single "Rusty", Hein Cooper spent the next three years touring tirelessly all over the globe supporting the likes of James Bay and Lukas Graham. As great as meeting audiences every night felt, the daily routine of traveling solo and experiencing solitude on a daily basis got to him.

Fresh from a stand-out performance at Glastonbury (where she appeared with Billy Bragg), Stella Donnelly is delighted to announce a series of national headline dates in support of her debut album Beware of the Dogs, released in March this year. 

Supported by triple j, the tour will take in venues across Melbourne, Fremantle, Adelaide, Hobart, Brisbane, Canberra, and Sydney, along with a number of regional towns including Castlemaine, Ballarat, Wollongong and others this September and October. Melbourne four-piece Jade Imagine will accompany Stella for all headline tour dates. In late September, Stella will also play acclaimed West Australian festivalWave Rock Weekender. 

In March, Stella Donnelly shared Beware of the Dogs to mass critical acclaim. Fresh off the back of sold out shows in the US, UK and Europe, today The Jungle Giants blast back into our ears with fresh new track 'Heavy Hearted'. The single comes along with an announcement of a huge national tour that will see the band take their electrifying live show around the country.

Written, produced, recorded and engineered by lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist Sam Hales, 'Heavy Hearted' melds the infectious energy The Jungle Giants are renowned for with driving beats and hypnotic accents. The band will be doing a special release of 'Heavy Hearted' on 7" vinyl, available at all shows (and online down the track).

Sam Hales said 'Heavy Hearted' has been with me as an instrumental track for so long that I’d forgotten the title a bunch of times and nearly lost it in my sessions. That bass line and beat would always creep its way back into my mind though. It's been a sweet journey watching the track grow and it just feels right to share it. It’s also been a chance for me to play around with some of my production tricks so that’s a little bonus."

Sydney DJ Adi Toohey will bring her mixes of jazzy house, boogie and subterranean club music along to all shows, ensuring that the dance floor is heaving and the room filled up with all the party feels before The Jungle Giants take to the stage.

The Jungle Giants are still on a career-high from third album Quiet Ferocity, which produced one ARIA-certified Platinum single 'Feel The Way I Do' and three ARIA-certified Gold singles in 'Used To Be In Love', 'Bad Dream' and 'On Your Way Down'.

Produced by Hales, the album pushed The Jungle Giants' catalogue to well over 130 million streams, topped numerous 2017 Best Of lists, and landed at #7 on triple j listeners Top 10 Albums of 2017. Australia’s Ziggy Alberts, who will be heading to the upcoming 2019 Splendour In The Grass music festival, has revealed that he will again be embarking on a national Australian tour at the end of November 2019, starting at Hordern Pavilion in Sydney and ending at Riverstage in Brisbane.

Ziggy’s ‘Laps Around The Sun’ world tour saw him headline rooms of all shapes and sizes across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe, North America, South Africa and South America.

On the most recent leg of this tour in early 2019, Ziggy played 28 headline dates across Europe and the United Kingdom, selling out 21 of the shows, which amounted to 14,600 tickets. Ziggy also performed to his biggest rooms to date on this continent, playing sold-out shows at prestigious venues such as Electric Brixton (London) Paradiso (Amsterdam), Kaufleuten (Zurich) and Kägelbanan (Stockholm).

Constantly pushing the boundaries for self-funded independent artists, Ziggy Alberts has spent the past few years travelling the world, sharing his music with his dedicated grassroots following. SAFIA brought the chills this morning when they covered Queens of the Stone Age in the triple j Like A Version studios. A hauntingly beautiful rendition of QOTSA’s ‘No One Knows,’ the cover was preceded by an equally beautiful version of their current single ‘Resolution’ for which they were accompanied by a string ensemble and backing vocalists.


The Like A Version comes ahead of the release of the band’s second album Story’s Start or End which will be out on Friday 9 August. Tickets are flying out the door for the extensive national album tour which follows the album release, and today sees the addition of an all-ages show at Forum Melbourne leg after the 18+ show sold out. In addition the Wollongong venue has been upgraded to the Uni Hall due to demand.

Written and produced by the band over the past 2.5 years in their hometown Canberra, the album will include current single ‘Resolution’, as well as previously released songs ‘Think We’re Not Alone’, ‘Starlight’ and ‘Cellophane Rainbow’. Story’s Start or End will showcase the Australian three-piece’s bold vision and fine attention to detail, with intricate production and adventurous arrangements underpinning thoughtful musings on identity, growth, and understanding. As a band they are known for forging entire sonic landscapes with rich, cinematic detail and Story’s Start or End will continue that not only sonically but also visually through their live shows.

In the past year SAFIA have made a celebrated return to Splendour in the Grass, and graced festival stages including Beyond the Valley, Origin Fields, This That, The Grass is Greener, The Drop and a headline slot at Corona Sunsets. They also completed a sold-out run of limited capacity shows down the East Coast of Australia and played to adoring crowds in China twice.


SAFIA are one of my favourite bands and the boys from Canberra never seem to disappoint.  I can't wait to check out their show in Melbourne later this year.

Melbourne indie outfit VIERA MOTEL are kicking down the doors and calling you to the dance floor with their new track “Take Heart”, released today.

This new band’s foot has been firmly placed on the gas with this track’s breakneck pace, revved on from the euphoric and electrifying piano riff that drives the track home.  “Take Heart” has been released alongside a  retro lyric video.


Exhilarating & glossy, “Take Heart” is the debut single for this Melbourne based 4 piece.  The track features a 90’s Eurodance-inspired piano riff that carries the listener from tempting verses to infectious pre-choruses, building the foundation for a towering chorus which completes the track. 


Frontman Jay Pollock delivers an honest self-reflection in the lyrics, springing in and out of falsetto, accompanied by new-wave-inspired pads, drummer Matt Colvin's thumping four to the floor drum track, and Matthew Ferguson’s driving and invigorating guitar.


Melbourne producer Malcolm Besley (Northeast Party House, City Calm Down, Client Liaison) supports the band as they have combine the traits of modern indie-pop with the realness of the 90’s,

We caught up with Jay Pollock (interviewee), Matt Ferguson, Matt Colvin and Dane Sorensen to chat all things music.

Where in the world are you based?


Me, Fergs and Dane live in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, where as Colvin's a Brunswickian.



How long have you been playing music?

I started creating music by copy/pasting certain sections of other songs on Guitar Pro, then moulding them into my own. They were terrible. I think one of my first songs was called "Half Alive Boys", and the other was about a cow for whatever reason. So anyway, I've been making music for about 11-12 years, but bought my first guitar in 2009. Fergs and I started making music about 8 years ago, whereas Colvin, I'm not entirely sure and Dane... well he's a music teacher so I would like to think he's been at it for a lot longer!


Did you study? 

Oh no no. I was lucky to finish Year 12! Being too drunk to attend my first exam pretty much sums it up. As mentioned Dane is a music teacher, so I'm pretty sure he had to get a bit of study under his belt. That's how it works isn't it?


Would you say you have a particular style or genre of music that defines you?


Overall, I think the early 00's new wave movement has greatly influenced the band, the likes of Interpol, The Strokes and The Killers. Personally, I'm a massive Beatles, Oasis and Killers fan, as I've always been fasciated by songs having a massive chorus. Or an irresistible hook which Calvin Harris has always been a master at. So I guess you could say pop would be the style that defines me?...Decent pop that is.


Who are some other Bands, DJ's or Producers you think are killing it at the moment?


I'm in love with Sydney's Alex Cameron. He's easily up there as one of the best songwriters I've heard. He's whole act is incredible and writes those songs you wish you thought of first. Other than that, I'm really out of touch with what's going on in the current music scene. Well, we did a gig in Bendigo a few months back with an act called Rowboy played. Fergs and Colvin loved he's cover of Wonderwall so much they attended his next gig a few months later in Melbourne. On ya Rowboy!!!


Who are are your biggest musical influences?


Personally, I would need to say the stand outs would be Beatles, Oasis, The Killers, Interpol and Calvin Harris off the top of my head. Fergs is big on Interpol, The Libertines and a few upcoming indie acts, which shows in he's guitar playing. Colvin is big on a bit of everything, but likes The Wombats which helped shape our drum sound for our debut single and Dane... well, he likes this band called 'Ninja Sex Party'... don't ask.

What are you listening to at the moment?


I've been listening to OK Computer by Radiohead for the first time! Once I hear an important album such as this, I need to listen to it a few times. I'm worried that'll I'll become really fascinated by it, as once that's the case I'll be listening to it and reading up about it for a fair few weeks!


Best gig you you've been to lately?


The last show I went too was Arctic Monkeys at Rod Lava... left me absolutely speechless.. and really, really hungover. Alex Turner is just class and their latest album is one of the best I've ever listened too.


What's your favourite venue to play?


We did a New Years Eve gig at my house last year. We decked out the 'man cave' into a venue! Stage, lights, bar tables, the lot. Would love to officially turn it into a venue but not sure the landlord would agree.


Where do you go out to party?


The home studio is me, and I could probably say Fergs' 'go to' place for a party. Been some interesting nights in there! And some pretty interesting songs as a result (that will never see the light of day I need to add). Colvin's a bit of a reptile when it comes to the nightlife, seen him in some fine form. I would say Dane is on the other end of the reptile scale.


Anything else? 


Our debut single 'Take Heart' comes out on July 4th and celebrated with our single launch on July 5th at Yah Yah's from 8pm. Going to be an absolute beeeaaaassssssstttt of a night! Plus you get to see reptilian Colvin in some of the finest form!

Kira Puru delivered the Melbourne leg of her Australia tour last night at The Corner Hotel in Richmond. 


A loyal following of Melbournites braved the cold for a night out while Puru, (an imposing presence on stage) tore the roof off the iconic Richmond venue with dazzling vocals and a confidant showmanship you'd usually expect from more established names.  


We were instantly onside after she appeared onstage in a cloud of purple smoke and announced: 


"Most of my songs are about sex..."


Piru delivered a mix of her familiar Triple J hits and some new material which was well received. In particular, her new power ballad "Bury Me Here on the Dance Floor", her tribute to the queer community that she found comfort in when she was young, was a touching gift. Another of her new tracks "Why Don't We Get Along" has an awesome trudging momentum to it.  It was impossible not to dance.


Despite recovering from a cold, she powered through and didn't disappoint with her highly anticipated renditions of  "Tension" and closed out the set with "Molotov." The crowd would never have known if she hadn't said!


Following the release of her new single, Everything Is Better Without You,  Puru is touring nationally in her biggest headline tour to date. She is joined on the road by special guest Kinder in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Canberra.  


A night at a Kira Puru show is a damn good time.  She's honest, silly and pretty dirty which is way too much fun.

New Zealand duo Foley have served up a carefree and breezy slice of electro-pop with their new single “Can’t Help The Way”. A bonafide pop bop, the track is overflowing with lush synth layers and an 80’s throwback moment courtesy of the trusty vocoder.


“The song is actually fun and carefree and the way you feel listening to it matches. It shows a lot about our personal lives.”

Whilst in the past, the pair have used upbeat arrangements to contrast a deeper, often sadder and honest lyrical content “Can’t Help The Way” is 100% fun and upbeat from its core.

Underlying the track’s upbeat and carefree summer vibes is a real message of hope and optimism that the duo want to share with their fans. 


“One thing we love about pop music is packaging topics that might be really difficult to discuss in real life, into a format that allows people to come together and sing out,” 


Foley formed in 2017 as the passion project between two best friends, Ash and Gabriel, and that friendship continues to be one of the driving factors behind their effortless and endearing releases. Their songs are crafted together; 50/50, with neither party more important than the other. In a male-dominated industry where female vocalists are often commodified, it’s an important distinction to make.

Where in the world are you based?

Auckland, New Zealand


How long have you been playing music?

As Foley, about 3 years. But much longer before that, we both had musical upbringings.


Did you study? 

Yep - Ash and I have both been through uni. I did a bachelor of health science and Ash did a double major in economics & music!



Who are some other Bands, DJ's or Producers you think are killing it at the moment?


Too hard to list them all! Benee, Balu Brigada, Wells*, Miss June, CLAYE!


Would you say you have a particular style or genre of music that defines you?
We like to say Millennial Pop. But it's a mixture of Funk, Pop & Indie

Who are are your biggest musical influences?


It's a mix of old funk & indie music for me. Prince, Commodores, The Smiths & The Cribs


What are you listening to at the moment?


There's a whole bunch of stuff at the moment cause of the genre-less way streaming services fire stuff at you - but I'm really loving low-key stuff lately, like Jai Paul, Two Another, Yumi Zouma.


Best gig you you've been to lately?


Ooh really loved seeing Ruel play here a couple weeks ago. But we've been to some really special ones like Ladi 6 & Chelsea Jade recently and those were incredible

What's your favourite venue to play?


We loved playing at the Hollywood Theatre the other month. It's this old movie theatre converted into a venue and it's gorgeous. The stage is on an angle for some reason but it's so much fun to play in


Do you have any trips coming up? 

I’ll most likely pop over to Europe in the coming months, I never like to stay in Australia through the whole of Winter.


Where do you go out to party?

Anywhere the vibe takes us.

Ahead of the release of their third studio album, My Own Pool of Light whcih is set to drop on Friday 2 August via Wonderlick Recordings, HOLY HOLY today announce a 16-date national headline tour. Renowned for their extraordinary live performances, this September, October and November will see HOLY HOLY playing some of their biggest venues to date, visiting both capital cities and regional centres. This news is paired with the release of album track Frida.

Named after vocalist Timothy Carroll’s daughter, the magnetic Frida discusses the manner in which gender stereotypes are perpetuated in daily life, even down to the books we read to our children.  The album track follows on from latest single Teach Me About Dying. First single Faces has been streamed almost 2 million times, claimed the #1 most played position on triple j, received support from the UK’s BBC Radio 1 and was playlisted on Radio X in the UK.
 
My Own Pool of Light is an undiluted representation of HOLY HOLY’S vision, from the songwriting to the recording process and, ultimately, their decision to self produce.  It’s an album that finds guitarist Oscar Dawson and vocalist Timothy Carroll incorporating new sounds and fresh ideas. In the process they redefine exactly what kind of band they are without sacrificing the key elements – soaring melodies, lush instrumental textures, the beguiling mix of jubilance and melancholy, Carroll’s affecting lyrics – that have made them one of Australia’s most popular acts.

He blew everyone away when he dropped into the triple j Like A Version studios recently for an original and a cover, and today Allday reveals the sweetly dark video for his track ‘Restless’ ft. The Veronica’s.  The track is from Allday's upcoming third full length release Starry Night Over The Phone which will be released on Friday 12 July.


The 'Restless' video was directed and produced by Rory Pippan who was also behind Allday’s recent 'Lungs' video and has worked on multiple videos with Mallrat, as well as Fergus James and Carmouflage Rose.

"I went back to Adelaide (my hometown) to shoot all the videos for this album and I wanted to capture the desolation and boredom of the place. Growing up in a boring place was fantastic for me because it sparked my imagination; where I'm from is really important to me. We used that as inspiration, and exaggerated a lot of the light and dark aspects of the place for this video."

Along with the video comes the announcement of a trio of in-store Starry Night Over The Phone album events down the East Coast starting on album release day, Friday 12 July. Details are:

Friday 12 July - 24Hundred, Melbourne. Starts 5pm
Saturday 13 July – Rocking Horse, Brisbane. Starts 4pm
Sunday 14 July – Red Eye Records, Sydney. Starts 4pm

Starry Night Over The Phone was recorded in Los Angeles and features a rollcall of Australian talent with the aforementioned The Veronicas on board for ‘Restless’, and fellow Adelaidean Lonelyspeck on ‘See You When I See You’. Keeping to the antipodean theme, the album was Executive Produced by Simon Lam.

Following the album release Allday will make his anticipated return to the Splendour in the Grass stage where he will bring along a rollcall of friends, before he takes the album on a mammoth national tour in August. Joining in for all tour dates are great friend and collaborator Mallrat, singer-songwriter E^ST and musician-on-the-rise JXN.

Fans at his recent sold out East Coast shows were gifted a mysterious artwork print containing a hidden clue, with a handful of sleuths spotting the cryptic song title and release date of  The Kite String Tangle’s next single. Today we can reveal to all that the next taste of his new musical direction is single  ‘KILLING TIME’ ft. Eliott.

Featuring glitchy moments, dark notes, and a staccato beat, the lighter vocals provided by Melbourne’s Eliott give the track a perfect balance in tone.

The track is paired with instrumental track ‘1.618’ and follows on from the double release of singles ' P()L4R'  and ' C()D3X' earlier in the year. Marking a new sound for The Kite String Tangle, ‘P()L4R’ struck a chord with fans and media alike with high rotation at triple j and tastemaker support across UK and Europe.

Currently in Berlin on the  Grant McLennan Fellowship which sees him living in the city for 3 months to collaborate and immerse himself in the electronic music and arts scene, The Kite String Tangle says of the track: 

“ This song quickly floated to the top of the demo pile for me. I watched Eliott playing a show in Brisbane supporting No Mono and was absolutely blown away by her commanding voice and presence and I feel really honoured to have her voice on this track. The song is about feeling a little like you’re in a hamster wheel watching the world go by and perhaps feeling like you’re not progressing like you thought you would in life but realising that it’s ok because you’re sharing it with someone that you love or with whom you’re really connected in some way.”

It’s been a busy couple of years for the Brisbane producer. The release of his debut self-titled album in 2017 which saw him nominated for an ARIA award, three national headline tours, much-talked about sets at Splendour in the Grass and FOMO festivals amongst others. In 2018 he released single ' Give It Time' ft. Aalias, won a Queensland Music Award, played captivating sets at local and international festivals. Then there was also the release of mini album  The Kite String Tangle Presents: In A Desperate Moment which resulted in two sold out shows with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Brisbane. All this came alongside the announcement of his own record label Exist. Recordingswhich has put out well received releases from Brisbane producer Golden Vessel and sibling duo Lastlings.

Queensland fans can catch The Kite String Tangle live in October, as he’s been announced on The Grass Is Greener Festivals in Gold Coast and Cairns.

UK pop artist Millie Turner has burst onto the music scene with her new track “Swimming Pool”, released today through Kobalt/AWAL.


" Swimming pool was based on a poem I wrote that tells a story of a group of kids that destroy this old historic building, setting it on fire, breaking down its traditional walls. They then escape from the chaos, retreating to the walls of the swimming pool. They stay there together, muffling out the sound of chaos outside. It’s about rebellion, liberation and then escapism, stepping away and escaping in this swimming pool."

 

Millie Turner was born and bred in London in the UK, into a very creative family, who she describes as “a bit weird”. Influenced by the likes of Solange and Billie Eilish, her songs touch on the universal themes of hope, optimism, female empowerment and youthfulness, while telling stories in a unique, cinematic way to engage people from all walks of life.

 

Turner’s music to date has been a feast for the eyes, as well as the ears, from the spectacular lo-fi visuals she co-directs for all of her music.  Turner's unique human storytelling combined with all her artistry beyond music creation (painting & illustration) are showcased in her debut EP and first two singles.

 

Turner’s rise as a new artist to watch this year has been exceptional. She’s garnered support across tastemaker media, including NME who marked her as One To Watch and BBC Radio 1as one of their “Best New Pop” artists.

Meet Decapitators, a new band taking the Sydney grunge rock scene by storm.  Since their formation a year ago  they have been forging a cult-like following in the dingier parts of Sydney’s inner west.  


" Sometimes we just just stay in, get rolled and have a hotwheels soccer tournament."


Their first official track Crystal Math dropped today and is and full of that familiar rebellious 90's sound that makes you want to skull beer and play pool.


To celebrate the release of their debut single Decapitators are set to release a music video later this month, alongside a few select tour dates.  Stay tuned for details.


We caught up with Ivan, Thorne, Matt & Tom from the band to chat all things music.

Where in the world are you based?

Inner West Sydney


How long have you been playing music?

We've been playing music together for about a year.


Did you study? 

None of us have studied music. But three out of four members have arts degrees. Hmm.


Would you say you have a particular style or genre of music that defines you?


No, not really. Dark and groovy. Psychedelic, psychotic and sporadic, and just a bit touched. We plays guitar music, so I guess that makes us rock? Yes, we are that unique. We'll come up with a name for our genre at some point and then people will be able to copy us.

Who are some other Bands, DJ's or Producers you think are killing it at the moment?


Our good mates Hoon are pretty much always blowing us away. Tame Impala's most recent track goes hard. Methyl Ethel's album earlier in the year didn't disappoint. Triathalon. The Oh Sees? Shady Nasty, City Rose. Flyying Colours from Melbourne. DJ/prod: HØST, Objekt, Ross From Friends. Loved MGMT's new stuff. Triple One and Chillinit. Behind You. There is loads of great new music coming out and being played around it's overwhelming.

Who are are your biggest musical influences?


Parquet Courts, Gorillaz, At The Drive In, Radiohead 


What are you listening to at the moment?


We've been spinning Stormzy's new track "Vossi Bop" a lot. On that UK grime with Slowthai too, also Denzel Himself.


Best gig you you've been to lately?


Crooked Colours at Laneway Sydney was off chops. I don't know who was responsible for that stage but the lightshow/projections we're so intense, and the sound... Everyone was just so euphoric. Also Parquet Courts. That was legit hilarious. 


Do you have any regular gigs at venues?


Nah, we like to keep on our toes and get around as many places as possible.


What's your favourite venue to play?


We recently played at The Dock in Redfern. That was a bit hectic. I think we probably sounded best at Waywards.. But by far the best gig we ever had was when our drummer Tom didn't show up for a gig at the Hampshire and we had to go impromptu unplugged. Yeah it was just like the MTV sessions, but better.


Do you have any trips coming up? 

I’ll most likely pop over to Europe in the coming months, I never like to stay in Australia through the whole of Winter.


Where do you go out to party?

Wherever's got something on that seems worth going to, or not. Maybe just the pub that happens to be there. Or even sometimes we just just stay in get rolled and have a hotwheels soccer tournament (that's Rocket League for the uninitiated).

Sydneysider Brad Jordan is no stranger to the Aussie hip-hop scene. Before going solo, he formed part of the hip-hop group Rapture who held the first place in the  triple j Unearthed Hip Hop Song Charts. 

Starting out hustling to make bedroom tracks at the age of 17, Brad has gone on to find his own authentic sound.


"Come Down" is  his first track of 2019 and mixes fast and hard beats with a warm textured topline. The song aligns itself with the concept behind Brad’s upcoming EP which was written during a time of great contemplation for a young artist trying to find his way.

Where in the world are you based?

Perth, WA.


Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Perth, although a lot of my family live in the U.K. so I’ve lived between the two frequently over the years.


Did you study? 

I’m currently studying Law at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle.


Would you say you have a particular style that defines you?


I would say my style is super eclectic. There are so many factors that influence how I dress and the fashion statements I find most appealing. I love blending mixtures of past decades into one outfit, although nothing beats the 70s & 80s to me. Mixing these decades with the early 2000’s is always a good blend!



Who are are your biggest style influences?




I find influence in many aspects of my life. The music I grew up listening to and watching has had a massive impact on my life, and I love the style of celebrities in the 90s. I follow a few Instagram accounts that give me a lot of inspiration, Ricky Thompson for example has such subtly statement outfits which I love.



What brands do you love?

I tend not to shop specific brands but I do love going to Op shops and spending time trying to find one-off pieces that I can style.


Who are some other instagramers/influencers/general cool kids you think are killing it at the moment?


@josefinehj is my fav at the moment. She knows how to captivate with basic photo ideas.


What are you listening to?

I’m going through a Queen phase, I have their songs on repeat every day.


Best gig you've been to lately?

I recently experienced Flight Facilities djing at a party I was at in Sydney, which was a super up close experience that I’ll treasure forever! They’re insane.

Do you have any trips coming up? 

I’ll most likely pop over to Europe in the coming months, I never like to stay in Australia through the whole of Winter.


Where do you go out to party?

In Perth we have different events on every weekend, so instead of typical clubbing I like to go to these and have a boogie in new places!

I love Henry Summer in Perth.

From school friends in Perth, to studio partners in Sydney, KAYEX’s members Palassi Kailis andTom Derickx combine both electronic samples and live instrumentation in a way that speaks to the broadening tastes of today’s pop scene.

The duo debuted their live show at Sydney’s Listen Out Festival, and in late 2018 won the triple j Unearthed competition that allowed them to perform at Sydney’s Field Day Festival on New Year’s Day 2019. They also supported SG Lewis on his national Australian tour in 2018, and Crooked Colours on their national Australian tour.

Drawing from inspirations such as Daft Punk, Kanye West and Chance the Rapper, there is no doubt that KAYEX will continue to push boundaries in 2019.

With River Sessions Music Festival now only five weeks away, and tickets on track to selling out, the Mackay festival team are proud to announce a new Meet & Greet competition through their Facebook page that will allow two lucky winners to get one on one time with local legends ILLY and LDRU.


Some of Australia’s best artists in their respective genres, ILLY and LDRU, have agreed to spoil 2 lucky fans with a meet and greet backstage at the festival. Norwegian electro-pop artist AURORA with her breathtaking rendition of The Beatles’, “Across The Universe” on triple j’s Like A Version.

This appearance on triple j’s  Like A Version  has finished off  AURORA’s  visit to Australia in perfect form. The recent tour saw her perform floor-shaking shows around the country as part of the touring festival  Groovin’ The Moo , as well as sideshows at renowned venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane. 


She also performed her new single "The Seed".  Watch below!




Following up the poignant and timely video for her second single,  “The Seed”,  which depicted the current youth protests around the globe for climate change awareness, this new video highlights  AURORA’s  care for the environment in an entirely different way.  


Through the visually arresting metaphor of the earth and its plants growing out from within her body, and her continual struggles to be rid of this growth,  AURORA makes comment on humanity’s connection to the land and their wish to disconnect from it, in favour of abusing it for their own gain. 


After an enormously successful year so far - which has seen her first single  “Animal” achieve high rotation on Triple J, and her second single  “The Seed” amass close to 2 million streams on Spotify since its release in April - this third single sees  AURORA gearing up for the release of her third full album,  A Different Kind of Human (Step II), on June 7th.

Where in the world are you based?

I currently divide my time between Auckland and Sydney


Where did you grow up?

Christchurch, New Zealand


Did you study? 

I studied a double major in Maori and Indigenous Studies and Te Reo Maori at Canterbury University in Christchurch. I started studying in 2010.


Would you say you have a particular style that defines you?


My music is often described as alt-pop or avant-pop. It's pop music with an edge and a little experimental. I love a big bass; grungy synths; really bright top ends and beautiful layered vocals. That's essentially my sound in a nut shell.



Who are are your biggest style influences?




There are so many to mention. When it comes to music, I've always adored fearless and unapologetic artists such as Amy Winehouse, Bjork and Rihanna. Lately I've been listening to boundary-breaking artists like Brooke Candy, Princess Nokia and Teddy Sinclair AKA Natalia Kills. I never set out to emulate anyone, but naturally the artists I admire, do have an influence on my sound and inhabit similar worlds to me, in terms of their style.



What brands do you love?

Gucci, always! It's my favourite high-fashion brand. In my every day life, I love to support independent labels. I've been wearing New York/Paris-based @NYCXPARYS; Sydney-based Cocaine Slim; Auckland-based @pebbles.hooper (check them all out on Insta). My fave pairs of glasses at the moment are from NZ designer Karen Walker and Australian designer Poppy Lissiman. Ohhhh and recently the family-owned boutique shoe store Pat Menzies, in Auckland, gifted me my first-ever pair of Doc Martens. I'm obsessed. And one more... I LOVE Hello Kitty! I just got a Hello Kitty fanny pack and I rarely take it off. Ha ha!!!

Who are some other instagramers/influencers/general cool kids you think are killing it at the moment?


The aforementioned @NYCXPARYS and @pebbles.hooper. I love @wuzg00d from New York. She has the Sickest outfits!!! I love @sydn4sty - her make-up looks are to die for. Also check out the @whoisyourstylist account on Instagram. They feature super edgy people from all around the world. Another fave of mine is @waifmagazine from New York. So cool! Can I sneak in one more - @frances_cannon from Melbourne. The dopest artist.


What are you listening to?

Brooke Candy is my queen! I have seen her twice - once last year and once earlier this year - live and OMG. She's next level. One of the most under-rated artists making music right now. I'm also having a moment, revisiting Britney Spears' back catalogue. How amazing is she!!!!


Best gig you've been to lately?

Brooke Candy! Can't tell you how obsessed I am with her. One of the most memorable gigs I saw last year was Stevie Nicks. Her style is timeless and she's one of the best songwriters ever. 

Do you have any trips coming up? 

I practically live out of a suitcase. I'm in Sydney at the moment in the studio but then I've got a quick trip to Melbourne planned. From there it's back to Sydney, before another stop-over in New Zealand. After that, I'm planning a 'Not Your Princess' tour with dates, cities and venues TBC but Australia is definitely on the list. 


Where do you go out to party?

When I'm in Sydney I love strolling around the inner city neighbourhoods and discovering new bars. I love dark little bars with booths and there are so many cute places I've found in Surry Hills and Darlinghurst. When I'm in Auckland, I hang out at an old pub near my house. It's like me and a whole bunch of elderly people. Ha ha ha.


Do you have a favourite club or bar?

In Auckland, one of my favourite clubs is Whammy. Neck of the Woods is cool too. My favourite bar is as mentioned above - the local pub. In Sydney, I have many local haunts in Surry Hills. One of them is Goros.


Anything else?

I've just released my second EP called Not Your Princess and I'd love for people to go and check it out on Spotify here. If you like what you hear, then YAY!!!
